Crime rate drops THE Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) released the Victorian recorded crime statistics for the year ending September 30, 2022 last week, with the number of criminal incidents decreasing both across the state and within the Strathbogie Shire.

The criminal incident rate for all of Victoria decreased 4.3 per cent to 5217.5 per 100,000 Victorians, the lowest level since the year ending 2005.

Similarly, the overall criminal incidents decreased, down 3.6 per

cent or 12,938 to 343,982 incidents.

Within the Strathbogie Shire, there was an incredible 13.6 per cent decrease in total criminal incidents, putting the region’s rate of 3477.7 per 100,000 well below the state’s overall rate.

Euroa had the highest amount of criminal incidents across the shire with 118, followed by Nagambie (106),

Avenel (28) and Violet Town (19).

The changes in Breach of Chief Health Officer (CHO) public health directions related to the COVID-19 pandemic in the last 12 months are said to have been a major factor in driving this decrease (down 76.3 per cent, from 9306 to 2895 incidents).

The rate of recorded offences across Victoria decreased 5pc to 7196.4 per 100,000 Victorians in the last 12 months, as did the number of offences, down 4.3pc to 474,446.

The rate of recorded offences in the Strathbogie Shire hovered around the same figure as last year, with a 0.3pc increase from 622 recorded offences to 624.

Alleged offender incidents for the entire state decreased 3pc to 158,349 in the last 12 months, as did the rate down 3.8% to 2,727.7 per 100,000.

Within the local area, the decrease was more pronounced with an 11.8pc drop from 212 incidents to 187.

CSA chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said the numbers reflected a decrease

not seen for 17 years.

“The notable decreases in recorded crime levels during the COVID-19 pandemic period have contributed to the lowest Victorian criminal incident rates since 2005,” she said.

“Decreases in Breaches of Chief Health Officer public orders are the main driver of the decrease in alleged offender incidents in the last 12 months, with offences for Breaches of Chief Health Officer directions related to the COVID-19 pandemic measures peaking during 2020.”

ESC celebrates high achievers EUROA Secondary College hosted their annual presentation night last Tuesday, where students were celebrated for their academic achievements, participation in school leadership, musicianship, as well as school and community contributions.

The event, held at the Euroa Community Cinema, was hosted by school captains Jasmine Raleigh and Peter Bateman.

School principal Leanne Winfield said that school staff were proud of all students for their achievements this year and acknowledged how students have settled back into school while still recovering from lock downs and remote learning.

“I congratulate all year 12 students this year as even though they were back at school this year, the past two years have been difficult,” she said.

The school also celebrated the achievements of student results in Year 12 subjects, announcing the year level’s dux Jasmine Raleigh.

Jasmine completed several year 12 subjects while in year 11 last year, achieving more strong results this year in chemistry, maths methods and English.

Jasmine also enrolled in a university extension subject at La Trobe University, com-

In her dux speech, Jasmine acknowledged that students have faced many challenges throughout their final years of schooling, including COVID and more recently floods.

“We had to learn and work in challenging and uncertain environments,” she said.

“However, despite all the uncertainty we all face, I am beyond excited to start this next chapter of my life.”

Her goal is to enrol at Deakin University in a sci-

ence course and then continue on to a Masters of Teaching course.

School captain Peter Bateman was commended for achieving excellent scores in VCE Music and VET Sound Production.

Peter is also member of a local band, Bad Ibis.

They currently have an agent and are receiving offers to perform at music events and festivals.

In the meantime, Peter will be moving to Melbourne to do some tradie work in the construction industry while still exploring options

and opportunities in the music industry.

Other year 12 students who achieved high level results are Zoe Martin, Cameron Jacka and Charlotte Mason.

There were several students in year 11 completing year 12 subjects, including Molly Redfern who completed three year 12 subjects this year.

“It is nice to have completed units and succeeded,” Molly said.

“I now have a good idea of how exams works and I feel really prepared for next year.”

Molly said she was very

pleased with her results this year. She is one of the School Captains for 2023, along with Samy Tatai.

The school also congratulated students who have completed the VET Agriculture course, ran in partnership with 4UpSkilling.

Students who have completed a Certificate II in Agriculture: James Croft, Amelia Delahey, Charlie Hall, Blake Hepworth, Koby Kubeil, Olivia Leigh, Owen Mackrell and Caid Miller.

A number of these students have gained apprenticeships and have already

started work this year, for instance Amelia Delahey has gained a School Based Apprenticeship in Agronomy.

The VET Agriculture course is open to students from other schools as a Vocational and Education and Training course for next year, running on Wednesdays.

The school thanked their many sponsors, including the Euroa Rotary Club, the Euroa Lions Club, Burtons IGA, the George Hunter Foundation amongst others who support the school and students.

Agriculture’s leading women meet in Euroa

By EMMA OLIVER THE Australian Women in Agriculture’s (AWiA) Connect to Cultivate Event Series has connected rural women and women in agriculture across Australia, with Euroa chosen to host the Victorian event, which was held on December 9 at the local golf club.

50 women from across agriculture and associated industries and services came together for AWiA’s first in-person event after extended lockdowns and natural disasters.

Proudly sponsored by Budget Direct, the VFF Making Our Farms Safer Program, and Indigo Power, the event focused on connecting and reconnecting women, as well as recognising their family, farm, and community contributions.

Aligned with the United Nations 2022 International Day of Rural Women theme, ‘Rural women cultivating good food for all’, the event series highlights the essential role women and girls play in the food systems of the world.

Catering for the event was provided by A3 Hospitality an amazing resilient team of three sisters, who lost their business premises during the recent floods, but are continuing to operate from a licensed kitchen based in Nagambie.

The afternoon commenced with speakers from community-based organisations that focus on supporting farmers and building knowledge and resilience in rural communities.

This included Peter Costello from the Victorian Farmers’ Federation’s Making our Farms Safer Program, Lana Young from the National Emergency Authority and Nicole Wells from NCN Health and Rural Aid. Fran Quintella from Indigo Energy talked about growth in the community energy market and the importance of investing locally.

“Reaching out and connecting others to essential services is vital to building resilient and healthy communities,” said Fran.

Rien also focused on the importance of the Pacific Islander Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme for horticulture, agriculture and rural, regional and

remote communities.

Rien works closely with organisations and authorities advocating for primary producers and extolled the benefits of the PALM scheme not only for the growers but the workers as well.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor and Euroa local councillor Laura Binks provided her perspective on being the mayor of a small regional council.

She discussed the importance of regional leadership in the transition to more sustainable industries, and that passion and empathy were both critical to driving positive change.

“Strathbogie Shire is filled with incredible women who are dedicated to the agriculture sector,” said Laura.

“As one of our biggest economic drivers, it is important to support women in agriculture and encourage other young women to join the industry.”

An independent cover crop advisor, and researcher, working in Victorian grazing systems Jade discussed her journey

EUROA COMMUNITY founding Healthy Farming Systems in 2020, which aims to help farmers trial, adopt, and manage multispecies cover crops on-farm.

As an emerging leader in agriculture, Jade demonstrated the importance of investing in our next generation and providing opportunities for training and development.

Jade is the Victorian Participant of the 2022 Lead HER Program, delivered by Australian Women in Agriculture with generous support from Trimble Agriculture and facilitator Jo Eady.

Jade highlighted the importance of authenticity in leadership, a trait she values as an emerging leader and one she seeks in mentors and industry leaders.

AWiA Victorian director, Sarah Parker said that the event was a huge success with feedback from attendees overwhelmingly positive.

“Attendees felt motivated and energised by the impressive speakers and the company of kindred spirits all supported by great food, with the room abuzz with conversation,” she said.

“The easiest way to do your business during the holiday season is with your

“These services are available 24/7, even on public holidays.

“This means people can still report their employment income, submit claims, or apply for an advance payment.”

Customers should also be aware the date they receive their regular payments may change.

“We have special arrangements in place for national public holidays. Some people may get paid early and others may be able to report their employment income

LIT UP: The Nagambie Recreation Reserve will benefit after Strathbogie Shire Council received funding from a state government funding grant.

Lighting up Nagambie Recreation Reserve

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has received State Government funding for the Nagambie Recreation Reserve’s lighting project.

Council was one of 91 projects to share up to $30 million from the Labor Government’s 2022 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said council welcomed the funding for the project which will be used for lights around the recreation reserve oval and netball courts.

“The inclusion of lighting at the netball courts and around the oval at the Nagambie Recreation Reserve is required to meet

both existing demand for additional playing and practice time as well as the increasing future demand in netball, football and cricket,” Cr Binks said.

The lighting is in line with the priorities of the Nagambie Recreation Reserve Development Plan.

The redevelopment of the Nagambie Recreation Reserve is part of a multifaceted redevelopment and collaboration between Strathbogie Shire Council, the Nagambie Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, and the other stakeholder clubs.

“The parties have come together and collaborated closely to ensure the project

is well-planned, widely supported, deliverable and responsive to the needs of the growing local participation in netball, football and cricket,” Cr Binks said.

Minister for community sport Ros Spence said sport was the lifeblood of many communities and all Victorians deserved access to quality change rooms, grounds and playgrounds regardless of their age, gender, ability or where they live.

The project has been made possible due to a $250,000 grant from Sport and Recreation Victoria as well as a contribution of more than $300,000 from council.

An incredible career in nursing

PROUD ACHIEVEMENT: Christine Mackrell’s astounding progression over a 15-year career at Euroa Health has been celebrated, with Ms Mackrell graduating as a registered nurse this year.

LOCAL nurse Christine Mackrell’s 15-year career with Euroa Health has been a remarkable journey, from starting as a personal care assistant (PCA) to becoming an enrolled nurse (EN) and to now being qualified as a registered nurse (RN).

The path to become a registered nurse was not always easy for Ms Mackrell, who had to balance life as a single mother, adapting technology, and the rising cost of nursing placements across the state.

After finishing her studies in November of last year, Ms Mackrell was able to celebrate her graduation in May this year at a ceremony in Shepparton.

Originally, the plan was to be a veterinarian, with Ms Mackrell even doing internships with Euroa’s wellknown “Bob the Vet”.

The plan hit a hitch when she found out you needed straight As to qualify for the course.

“I wanted to be a vet but you needed higher grades than a doctor,” Ms Mackrell said.

“I suppose an animal can’t tell you what’s wrong with them.”

Mackrell said she needed to look towards a job that would have better long-term outcomes for her and her family.

“I originally did my PCA in Benalla,” she said.

“After that I stayed in Euroa and decided I wanted to do my EN certification in 1996, which took me three years part-time.

“I had to study and work at the same time while being a single mother.

“Putting my son through his education first was the priority but he was also the one who pushed me to go back to school.”

In addition to the motivation her son provided her to keep progressing with her career, Ms Mackrell recognised the other mentors in her career who helped her get to this point.

“Betty Siede, who is now a resident at GraniteHill, was a huge motivation,” she said.

“She graduated when she was in her eighties and used to study in New South Wales on a week on-week off basis which was just unbelievable to me.

“I was on track to graduate at 50 and it made me feel that if she could do it, I could too.”

Ms Mackrell also thanked Valerie Smith, who helped prepare her for the rigours

of studying and the modern technology used in the programs.

“Computers were a big change for me when studying,” Ms Mackrell said.

“I came to study with no experience on how to use them.

“Valerie Smith was a real help when it came to how to study properly.

“She taught me how to reference properly, how to write proper sentences, it was like going back to school.

“I needed to do both a computer course and nursing course at the same time, and I always found the nursing easier.”

The opportunity to become a RN arose during her studies in the EN course, with the possibility seeming like a natural progression to Ms Mackrell.

“I did the EN for two years and they said I could have the opportunity to do the RN as part of the studies,” she said.

“It involved a lot of placements, and that’s tough because you don’t get paid for the travelling, your time or anything.

“So I took six months to get some money behind me and then decided to go back and get my RN. “I finished my course in November 2021 and was able

to celebrate the graduation in May this year in Shepparton.”

The journey was less conventional than most, but the team at Euroa Health and the wider community are undoubtedly proud of Ms Mackrell’s achievements.

“I think I was the oldest in my class for both the EN and RN courses, I finished my course in November and turned 50 in December,” she said.

Plans are already underway for more learning, with her son continuing to be a motivation in her life.

“Now my son turns to me and says, so what do you want to do next?” Ms Mackrell said.

“For now, I say leave me alone!”

“I’m content at the minute but I do want to look into diabetes education, that’s a passion for me.

“I’ve got a family connection with the disease and want to learn more about that and how to help.”

Euroa Health expressed their congratulations to Ms Mackrell for the phenomenal work over her 15-year career with the organisation and say they are always looking to support locals who are interested in working in Aged Care or Nursing.

In response to ‘the voice’ I AM compelled to respond to the letter to the editor from Charlie Brydon, Euroa (published The Euroa Gazette, December 7) with respect to ‘the voice’.

Whilst opening his letter with two paragraphs comprising an ideologically based attack on the National Party, Charlie derides them for taking a position on ‘the voice’ because, in his words, “there is a vacuum of information and detail about what the voice is”.

However, Charlie is quite comfortable taking a position, albeit the opposite, but clearly similarly within the same vacuum of information and detail.

I have no qualm with Charlie supporting a Yes vote.

However, I am more concerned that many advocates of the Yes vote have already taken the high moral road and are quick to attack anyone or any group that might have an alternate view.

The personal attacks and abuse

that we are already beginning to see from those on the Yes side of the debate (like Noel Pearson’s personal attack on Senator Jacinta Price), towards those who are yet undecided or are likely to support a No vote is something that the left side of politics is becoming quite proficient at.

For example, Charlie writes “Were the Nationals and the Country Liberal Party present when Wyatt presented?

Perhaps they slept through his presentation? Certainly, they were and remain ill-prepared?

Apart from being ignorant, embracing a NO vote is also an appeal to the vocal but shrinking minority who remain committed to keeping Australia white.”

This paragraph alone exposes Charlie to the very traits that he accuses the No voters of.

No doubt there will be a lot of conversation, debate and letter writing about the voice over the coming months, and I simply implore everyone to have their say with respect to others, and without resorting to insult, stereotyping, bullying, lies or coercion.

Everyone is entitled to their

own views, and none are any more valuable than any others.

LEAP meeting report misses mark IN the December 7 edition of The Euroa Gazette, on page 18 there was an article titled “LEAP into resilience sets out plan” which reported on a community resilience meeting held at Violet Town recently.

A key theme of the meeting was the need for local resources to be utilised and coordinated by people with local knowledge in a wide range of emergency circumstances.

An example of a failure of this theme was the management of traffic diversions for nearly two days through Violet Town and district when there was a serious accident on the Hume Freeway a few months ago.

The various emergency services representatives in attendance acknowledged to the local community this traffic diversion was not managed well and nor was the traffic diver-

sion either a week later during another accident on the Hume Freeway.

Local community members identified that the Strathbogie Shire Council was seen to have done nothing during the emergency, whereas in the past local staff and the local depot would have responded appropriately on an as needs basis.

With many local farming family businesses often paying between $15,000 to $20,000 in Strathbogie Shire Council rates each year, local community members suggested a lowering of the rates payable would allow for greater rural business resilience, and therefore greater ability to support the local community in times of emergency.

I, and other members of the community, feel that we need Strathbogie Shire Council to have a relevant and greater service to our community for our short, medium and long term needs, rather than just simplistic symbolising that they are listening and consulting us whilst giving us a huge rates bill.

Elders Merton Cup is back

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY NEW Year’s Day at Merton is always a big affair and this coming event being held on a Sunday, January 1, 2023 will be even bigger for the 158th running of the Merton Cup at this annual country picnic race meeting.

Being a long weekend, and of course still the end of the Christmas/New Year holiday break, the event is expected to see crowds of around 2000 through the gate.

Be sure to pack a picnic rug, deck chairs and bring along your own picnic food and drinks while relaxing in the shade of the huge oak trees and graze away the day.

There will be six races on the card with caller Ben Sporle calling all the runners and in particular the winners.

The feature race will again the Elders Merton cup and is placed fifth on the race card.

Gates open at 11am with the first race starting at around 1pm.

On the social side Mansfield Duo, Naturally Kerley, will be performing throughout the day providing live music as entertainment.

Time for a coldie?

The bar will be operated again by members of the Bonnie Doon Football Netball Club while the barbecue and food stall will be manned by members of A Third Hand Mansfield group.

An animal nursery will operate keeping the kids entertained.

Fashions on the Field is always a big draw card for this annual race day and this January will be no exception with big bold colours being the ‘in fashion’.

Gwenda Tait has been appointed coordinator for this event with Judges Naomi Vos, Julie Duncan and Lincoln Tait sorting out the winners and runners up.

Local musicians dominate music awards LOCAL bands Bad Ibis and Inversion took out awards at the recently held Kool Skools Awards night, while also gracing the stage for a performance.

Bad Ibis took out Best Rock Track for their song ‘Waiting for the Weekend’ while Inversion received a special judges choice award in the band category.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the Kool Skools Program had been a fantastic activity for Strathbogie Shire’s FReeZA crew, as they partnered with Benalla Rural City Council to take part.

“I’d love to extend a huge congratulations to local bands Bad Ibis and Inversion for taking out these awesome awards; it is a credit to their talent being up against some other incredible musicians from across the state,” Cr Binks said.

Other local acts to receive nominations for awards included YNOT who were nominated for Best Indie Track, locals Alex Russell

and Mason Rae Greene were nominated for best vocalist and Strathbogie Shire Council was nominated for the top school award.

“It was fantastic to see Bad Ibis and Inversion play two songs from the album that was recorded through Kool Skools earlier this year at Empire Records in Melbourne with fellow bands YNOT and the Counterfeits,” Cr Binks said.

“The CD titled “Not A Bad Counter Version” was released recently at the Benalla Town Hall to an audience of 150 people of all ages recently and it was a fantastic event for our youth.”

Kool Skools is a National Music and Multimedia Project which involves young mu-

sicians recording a CD, taking part in professional photo shoots and learning more about the music business.

Strathbogie Shire partnered with Benalla Rural City Council for the 2022 project.

Benalla Rural City Council Mayor Bernie Hearn said it was a great way for the two local councils to come together and share resources.

“By sharing our resources for the 2022 Kool Skools Program, we were able to provide our local youth interested in the music industry with far more opportunities,” Cr Hearn said.

“We thoroughly enjoyed partnering with Strathbogie Shire Council for this project.”

Prepare for a safe summer holiday RACV is urging local residents to keep safety at the forefront of their plans ahead of the summer holidays, offering some useful tips to address potential risks at home and on the roads.

It is expecting an uptick in travel to regional hot spots and holiday destinations across the state this summer.

RACV general manager automotive services, Jackie Pedersen, said it was important that everyone who took to the road was aware of changed driving conditions brought on by extreme weather events throughout the year, including potholes and other hazards.

“Whether you’re using roads you’re familiar with, or driving to a new regional location, it’s very important that you plan ahead and be prepared for increased traffic and different driving conditions,” she said.

“Leave earlier wherever you can to avoid any unnecessary rush and remember to have patience with your fellow motorists.”

RACV also recommends that motorists check their roadside assistance and car insurance policy are up to date before they leave.

“It’s very good practice to get in the habit of also checking the fluid levels under the bonnet, including oil, coolant and even the windscreen washer level,” Ms Pedersen said.

“Checking tyre pressure is also a must.”

Ms Pedersen said scheduling regular stops and sticking to main roads made for a safer, more predictable journey.

RACV head of home insurance, Kirsty Hayes, said there were also simple precautions that could be taken to make homes safer over Christmas.

“Christmas lights are a beautiful way to decorate, but using power boards in your home can be risky if not used properly,” she said.

“It is important to ensure that you don’t overload power boards by attaching double adaptors or additional extension cords to them.

“It’s also important to use good quality power boards with overload protection.

“Candles add a festive ambience to your home, but they must never be left unattended and always be extinguished before you leave a room.

“Most house fires start in the kitchen.

“It is important to have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in an accessible area of your kitchen.

“If you don’t own a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket, they are great items to add to your Christmas list.

“RACV recommends that you also take time over Christmas to review your home and contents insurance and ensure that you are adequately protected before you leave home for the summer holidays.

“It’s also good practice to let a trusted neighbour know of your plans if you will be away from home for an extended period of time.”

Due to increased rainfall in Victoria, the state is expected to have below normal bushfire risk at the start of summer.

As the risk will potentially increase towards March, RACV recommends people use this time at the start of summer to prepare their properties.

“Make sure you regularly maintain the area around your home and yard to ensure it is free of excess vegetation and debris this includes gutters and pipes,” Ms Hayes said.

“Also look to seal gaps in doors and windows to the best of your ability, and ensure flammable goods such as woodpiles are removed, or stored far from the home.

“It’s also a good idea to ensure your motor vehicle is adequately covered and has had a safety check in case you need to evacuate.”

New school, new opportunities

A RANGE of activities organised by Euroa Secondary College during their transition program have helped support year 6 students as they ready themselves for secondary school in 2023.

There may have been some minor nerves during the transition, but these were quickly eased with the help of egg and bacon sandwiches and loads of welcoming smiles.

Staff gathered to greet the 2023 year 7s and guide them through the college and the changes that they will encounter.

It took no time at all for the newbies to relax into the program and enjoy themselves.

To make doubly sure that any fears, trepidations or anxieties were removed, Madeline McCluskey, Junior Sub-School leader and transitions program coordinator ensured that the two days of activities gave the young people a positive outlook for their new start in 2023.

“Euroa Secondary College prides itself on the transition program that we have established,” Ms McCluskey said.

“Having the students onsite for the two days rather than the one state-wide day, helps them feel more settled and confident for when they start full-time secondary school with us next year.”

By lunchtime of the first day the shy students at the start of the day were now bouncing balls, enjoying the library facilities with newly made friends, and sitting in the sunshine in the outdoor areas.

From experience Ms McCluskey has seen that although there are some fears, the students are ready for Year 7.

“They are excited to finish primary school and be able to experience secondary school,” she said.

“Orientation enables the new students to enjoy getting together with their friends from other schools, meeting teachers and

being able to run around and explore the facilities at Euroa Secondary College.”

An important aspect of transition is the time spent with the new students which enables teachers to become aware of their personalities, likes and dislikes, before the New Year commences.

“This time with the students helps equip us to know what they enjoy and what they don’t, who needs some additional support and who will thrive more independently,” Ms McCluskey said.

“We can settle their nerves and let them feel at home here.”

Fire Danger Period begins

By GUS RIDDER THE Fire Danger Period (FDP) for CFA District 22, which covers the Strathbogie Shire, has now begun as of 1am on Monday, December 19.

FDP restrictions already apply across parts of Victoria more will be introduced in the coming weeks based on assessments of the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and local conditions in each district.

The return of a La Nina weather pattern has led to widespread rainfall and flooding in parts of the state, particularly in October, however the CFA says that doesn’t mean communities can become complacent about the increasing fire risk this season.

The Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for summer identified potential for increased grassfire conditions for the 2022/23 fire season, due to significant grass growth and delayed harvest activities.

Based on the latest outlook, the fire season is expected to be normal in Victoria, except for parts of central, north east and eastern Victoria where the potential is below normal.

CFA District 22 acting assistant chief fire officer Mark Narayan said grass has

“Widespread rainfall in winter and spring has led to high fuel loads across the region and we can expect to see significant grassfires to start the fire season,” he said.

“We know in the right conditions fire will move across the land quickly, so prevention is a key to our success.”

While CFA firefighters are preparing for the bushfire season, they are urging the community to use common

sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.

No burning off is permitted during the FDP without a Permit to Burn, which can be applied for through the Fire Permits Victoria website.

There are very strict conditions attached to these permits and the liability sits with the permit holder to ensure they always act safely.

Monitor weather conditions and do not burn-off during days of high winds.

Fire Danger Period key information:  A written permit is required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation during the FDP; this permit may be issued by the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer or the CFA District Office and you can

apply for a permit at firepermits.vic.gov.au.  Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence and can bring a penalty of over $21,800 and/or 12 months imprisonment. Barbeques and fires for cooking and warmth do not require a permit, but must be lit in properly constructed fireplaces (to view complete conditions visit cfa.vic.gov. au/warnings-restrictions/ can  The use of an incinerator, chainsaw/lawn mower, welding/grinding equipment and vehicles that come in contact with vegetation and machinery with an internal combustion/heat engine are permitted provided conditions are followed.  Farmers can find legal guidelines and practical advice at cfa.vic.gov.au/ plan-prepare/farms - this information is important especially for new farmers, bush block owners or hobby farmers.  A Total Fire Ban declaration means no fires can be lit for the declared district for that day unless there is a specific exemption or special permit issued. Greens-Labor deal on energy short sighted: Birrell FEDERAL Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell has said there is no guarantee the Greens-Labor deal to cap gas and coal prices will deliver short term relief, but it is clear it risks a price explosion in the medium term as investment and supply plummets.

“I fully understand the pressures major industries are under and know they need immediate relief to provide certainty for their operations into 2023, but market intervention on this scale is bound to have unintended consequences,” Mr Birrell said.

“Energy price relief was urgently needed, the method of achieving it is the problem.

“The Albanese Government can gloat about cutting prices, but it will also have to own the consequences of this rushed and haphazard intervention in the national energy market.”

Mr Birrell said gas is an important transition fuel which is increasingly being relied on for electricity generation to fill the energy gap created by the shift away from coal fired generation.

“Gas is critical to support the transition to renewables and the solution to upward price pressure is to increase supply,” he said.

“The Victorian Labor Government cannot escape blame, it has failed consumers by shutting down exploration and de-

Mr Birrell said gas remains an important part of our energy mix.

“The Greens secured an undeclared amount from the Al-

banese Government for supporting the legislation to help households transition from gas appliances to electricity, and with the support of independents marked its passage as some sort of milestone in the shift away from gas as a fuel,” he said.

“The reality is that we need gas to keep industry going and to keep the lights on because renewable sources require massive investment and expansion

before they can carry the load.

“We will still need gas in 2024 for dispatchable energy and because of this government intervention, we may well be paying a whole lot more.”

Mr Birrell said the direct relief for households was never contested but at best according to the government, this will only reduce the projected increase in your electricity bill next year from 36 per cent to 23 per cent.

RECREATION SURVEY: Goulburn-Murray Water is looking for community opinion on the use of its recreational offerings at waterways.

Have your say on recreation at GMW GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) is encouraging visitors to its lakes, dams and reservoirs to have their say on its recreational offerings.

The Recreational User Survey is open and follows the success of last year’s survey which attracted more than 350 responses.

The survey aims to understand what is important to visitors to GMW storages and waterways.

“We received some really valuable feedback from our last survey in terms of service and amenity provision and we want to expand on that,” GMW water storage services general manager Martina Cusack said.

“Many of our lakes, dams and reservoirs have fantastic recreation infrastructure like parks, barbecues, boat ramps and all-ability facilities that make an ideal place for visitors.

“To ensure our storages continue to be a great place to visit now and into the future, we encourage our recreation users to have their say.”

The Recreational User Survey is open until 5pm on February 24, 2023.

A summary of the key themes will then be made available on GMW’s website.

Nagambie class of ’22 graduated in style

By DIANE GRANT NOWADAYS many primary schools are conducting end of year graduation ceremonies or dinners for their grade 6 graduates which can be witnessed by their teaching staff, friends and families.

A graduation dinner and awards ceremony was held for grade 6 pupils from Nagambie Primary School at the school on Thursday, December 8 to mark the end of their primary school years.

They dined in their main assembly room which was beautifully decorated by school staff and the young ones had a dinner they will remember all their lives.

They then moved to the outdoor deck area to celebrate the formal part of the evening.

Once again the awards ceremony held everyone’s interest.

They were conducted in front of the grade 6 students, families, staff and representatives of various organisations sponsoring the annual awards.

During these proceedings students presented their farewell speeches to family and friends.

Concluding the evening was the traditional award ceremony in which school principal Mr Robert French thanked both past and present sponsors of the awards.

Both Mr Bodycoat and Mr French congratulated the class of 2022 on the wonderful resilience they displayed during this most challenging year and congratulated them and their families for their persistence,

The Neil Lodding Sports Award (By Nagambie Football and Netball Club and Nagambie Cricket Club) went to two students Jazarah and Xavier and was presented by Helen Heathcote of the Nagambie Football/ Netball Club and Jake Lloyd of

the Nagambie Cricket Club and the Neil Lodding Perpetual Trophy was won by the pair also also.

The Trevor Boyer Encouragement Award was presented by Noeline Boyer and the award went to Jasmine and Amber .

The Arts award went to Zuri and was presented by teachers James Bodycoat and Kim Pollock.

The final award of the night was the Sir Weary Dunlop Award and was won by Evie with school Principal Robert French making the presentation to her.

Local history grants return for 21st round

By GUS RIDDER A NEW round of state government funding will provide an opportunity for community organisations to preserve and share local history and distinctive local voices.

Minister for Government Services Danny Pearson announced the opening of the Local History Grants Program’s 21st round, with $350,000 available in grants of up to $15,000 to foster the preserving, recording and sharing of Victoria’s fascinating history.

The program funds community-based organisations to tell the stories of their communities, preserve significant historical collections and increase opportunities for public engagement with the past.

“Local history is an important part of Victoria’s memory, and we’re proud to support projects that showcase and preserve the diverse voices that make up the state’s past,” Mr Pearson said.

“Whether it is for the digitisation of records, the publication of local history stories or an upgrade to a museum, the Local History Grants Program ensures that the stories of our past are available for future generations.”

GRANTS RE-OPEN: A local history grant program that previously rewarded the Nagambie Historical Society in July, is now open again with more funding opportunities.

One of these recipients included the Nagambie Historical Society, who in June received $11,258.50 for important upgrades to its museum.

Speaking at the time, Nagambie Historical Society president Bob McMaster was thrilled with the opportunity the grant could provide.

“Our Local History Grant will be invaluable in updating and

modernising displays in the Nagambie Museum - an important showcase of local family histories and the history of our town,” he said.

Other projects previously funded include websites, oral histories and podcasts, interpretative signage, collection cataloguing and Auslan translations.

The Local History Grants Program is managed by Public Record Office Victoria and supported by the Labor Government.

“Historical societies, museums, schools, sports clubs,

theatre groups and volunteer organisations of all descriptions have fascinating stories of trials, triumph and community to share,” Public Record Office Victoria director and keeper of public records Justine Heazlewood said.

“We look forward to receiving applications from groups with history to preserve for the benefit of all Victorians, now and into the future.”

Applications for grants close on Monday, January 30 2023.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Communication lines open in preparation for grape growing season WINERIES and grape growers have come together to increase the preparedness, response, and recovery during region wide crisis events with the formation of the North East Wine Zone (NEWZ) Working Group.

NEWZ covers five wine regions including the Alpine Valleys, Beechworth, Glenrowan, King Valley and Rutherglen Geographic Indicators.

In 2021 the North East Wine industry contributed an estimated $1 billion to the North East economy.

This year the Hume Private Land Burn Coordination Meeting has been set up with a range of stakeholders who are working together to keep each other informed of any fire activity.

“With communication lines open, all stakeholders are able to be prepared and informed of fire activity in the North East Wine Zone this growing season,” Rob Hawkings, chair of NEWZ said.

“Based on the latest weather outlook, the CFA is expecting this fire season to be below normal in North East

Victoria, although the threat of damage from smoke to grapes as a result of grass fires is ever present.”

The CFA introduced the Fire Danger Period at 1am on Monday for all municipalities in North East Victoria including, Alpine Shire, Rural City of Benalla, Indigo Shire, Mansfield Shire, Towong Shire, Rural City of Wangaratta, City of Wodonga, Moira Shire, Strathbogie Shire and City of Greater Shepparton.

YOUNG AMBASSADOR: The results of the Euroa Show’s sheep section saw the Drinnan family take home several awards.

THE 130th Euroa Agricultural Show was pleased to announce the recipient of the VAS (Victorian Agricultural Society) Junior Ambassador Award in 2022, Miriam Drinnan.

Miriam also participated in the sheep section of the show, an event that saw a large number of high quality entries with the stewards and sponsors being very pleased with the competition and results.

The Drinnan family, which includes Miriam and her parents Stuart and Charlotte, took home awards in the Champion Short Wool Ram, Champion Short Wool Ewe, and Champion Short Wool Lambs categories.

Festive season underway in Euroa THE Christmas spirit has made its way to Euroa, with Friday evening’s Carols by Candlelight event bringing the community together as the festive season approaches.

Presented by the Euroa Citizens Band, the carols event held in the heart of the Seven Creeks Park continued a much loved local tradition as the countdown to Christmas begins.

A free barbecue was supplied by the Lions Club of Euroa to complement the fantastic music played by members of the local community.

The Citizens Band, local choirs and schoolchildren all performed, with a special visit from Santa Claus making sure all the kids were thoroughly entertained throughout the evening.

The park was filled with members of the community, with the event ensuring residents of all ages had something to celebrate as Christmas approaches.

The event was masterfully emceed by Gayle Mawson, whose enthusiasm made for a fantastic evening.

Carols on the lawn at Kelvingrove

By DIANE GRANT TWO years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, when most people were advised to be in isolation and uphold social distancing, the Nagambie Lakeside Larks choir came along to Kelvingrove Lifestyle Village and conducted a carols event for the residents on the front lawn.

This year the Lakeside Larks came back to Kelvingrove and following a sausage sizzle conducted another fantastic carols singalong that the residents who came along enjoyed very much.

A picnic atmosphere on the mild and sunny summer evening was a pleasant way to spend some time singing traditional carols and popular Christmas songs, all the while sharing in some Christmas spirit.

The Kelvingrove Village folk would like to thank the Lakeside Larks and keyboardists for their enjoyable time entertaining all the residents.

It was a nice way to prepare for the Christmas season.

Jasmine, Olivia win George Hunter Scholarship award FITNESS FOR EVERYONE: Locals Ben Bath and Gus Garner with Avenel Active’s Jeff Moran, Strathbogie Shire Council Hughes Creek Ward Councillor Paul Murray and Avenel Active President Jen Arnold.

ARTC funds Avenel Active project AVENEL Active has received funding from the latest round of the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations Program, with the grant set to be used for a wheelchair accessible picnic setting.

19 community groups and associations across Victoria including sporting clubs, history groups, community radio, music events and railway societies will receive a combined $68,000 in the fifteenth and latest round of allocations from the ARTC. The Avenel Active project is the only funding allocated within the Strathbogie Shire.

Since launching, the Sponsorships and Donations Program has now supported 308 local community projects and events like local festivals and celebrations, school STEM initiatives, upgrades to sporting facilities, and support for health and wellbeing groups.

Stephen Jones, the Inland

Rail’s director of health, safety and environment said the funding was an important part of contributing to areas where operating on the inland rail route.

“We offer funding between $1000-$4000 for groups and organisations that operate along the Inland Rail route and contribute to local and regional prosperity, well-being, and sustainability,” he said.

“These funds will directly benefit the community through supporting vital local initiatives.

“I encourage other nonprofit groups to lodge their applications for the next round of funding.”

Nominations for the next round of funding are open until Tuesday, January 31 2023.

THIS year’s George Hunter Foundation Scholarship was once again awarded at the Euroa Secondary College Valedictory Dinner, with this year’s recipients Jasmine Raleigh and Olivia Kloot receiving the prestigious honour in front of their fellow year 12 students, families and school staff.

The presentation was made by one of the trustees, Glen Burton and previous recipient Jasmine Towers.

The Scholarship was also presented on Tuesday 13 December at the Euroa Secondary College’s Presentation Night as a celebration of this award with the wider school community in attendance.

In her acceptance speech, Jasmine Raleigh recognised the history of the scholarship which has been provided to students from Euroa Secondary College for over 25 years.

“The generosity (of George Hunter) has helped many students, myself included, to continue on into further education with the assistance and support needed,” she said.

“George Hunter was an orphan who was adopted by a family in Ruffy.

“He lived on to become a philanthropist and donated generously to the community, to Euroa Secondary College and the Euroa Football Club in particular.

arship will also help her to attend university and provide assistance with the costs of studying.

“Thank you to the trustees and the people who helped me to finish Year 12,” she said.

Guest presenter Jasmine Towers received the scholarship in 2020 along with Vicki Nikolovski.

Jasmine is completing her studies in nursing at university with a final year next year, while Vicki is studying medicine at a university in New South Wales.

The scholarship has assisted both of these students with their accommodation and study costs.

At the 2022 Valedictory Dinner, Jasmine Towers stated that the scholarship cemented her opportunity to attend university and for that she will be forever grateful.

The trustees met in October this year to review the applications which were all high quality, making the difficult decision about the recipients for 2022.

East Central District Rifle Association success

TROPHY WINNERS: The Chas Hayes Long Distance Pennant Team trophy was received by the ECDRA Team Captain Neal Hambridge.

THE East Central District Rifle Association (ECDRA) Pennant Team comprising members from Mansfield, Euroa, Benalla, Buxton, Baddaginne and Violet Town won the McAulliffe Shield and the Chas Hayes Long Distance competition, as well as finishing a creditable second place in the Avenel Shield.

The latter is for off rifle team shooting over the two competitions using the MCIS formula for mixed categories.

Nagambie Rifle Club was team winners and the best individual off-rifle was David Black of the Shepparton Nathalia Rifle Club.

Congratulations to all shooters and thanks to the GVDRA organizing committee.

Class were named as ECDRA Club Champions in their disciplines.

At the ECDRA AGM at the Violet Town Shooting Complex on November 12, the prompt action by two club members was recognised, Zac Economou and Ross Davies, who protected the electronic targets and buts from the worst weather conditions in years.

However, parts of the Violet Town Range did not escape lightly with the access track up the hill to the Butts being badly damaged by torrents of water which washed away large sections.

Fortunately, the new clubhouse and facilities were not affected.

From the management committee, Dr Bob Irving (facilities management) and Des Coulter

(club vice-captain) stood down to be replaced by Geoff Broughton and Neal Hambridge respectively, while Graeme Kerr added the club captain’s role to his secretary’s responsibilities.

Plans were outlined to continue with solar power and storage additions to the complex but taking into account costs for essential repairs, improvements and regrading of the butts access track.

On breaking out from the meeting the opportunity was taken for a classic shoot using .303 SMLE of WW1 and WW2 vintages.

The winner was Randell Underwood who scored a possible in his first stage at 100yds and then the second stage (500yards) proved much more of a challenge for all these veterans (rifles).

The Friday Twilight Competition has really taken off with 28 players enjoying the round followed by by nibbles and drinks.

The second round of the Kinross Farms Shootout has seen the bar set high with a winning score of 21 last week and an even better 22 by Scott Watson this week.

Laurie McMartin eagled the par five first while Dee McMartin was in second place on 20 points.

Twilight continues at 4pm Friday and is open to members and visitors and players don’t require a handicap to play.

It really is the way to set up your summer weekends.

The men’s field on Wednesday was reduced to just 11 in the stableford competition won by Frank O’Connor with a fine 38 points.

Paddy McCarthy had 36 and continued that great form into the Saturday Competition to win division one with 75 Net 70 on countback from Cam Roper 72 Net 70.

The Monthly Medal however was claimed by a division two bandit when Mick Keeley shot 92-23-69.

Gaz Ritchie won the putts and most of the Nearest the Pins claiming 12,15 & 18.

Balls down the line went to Dave Mitchell and Dick Farmer 71, Graeme Carnegie and Cam Roper, Josh Bell and Gary Ritchie 72.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB (MEN) THE final competition for the year was the annual cross country event with a composite course set out, the ‘Ray Cassar’ Memorial shield was on offer as well as sporting vouchers generously donated by our sponsors Ben and Vic Cassar.

The winning pair for the fourth time and a third in succession were Jeremy Ezard and Shaun Spicer displaying their ability to hit creative shots and score from anywhere on the course, this mainly in part due to the fact they play from fringes regularly on the standard layout.

Runners up were the reunited former Finnigan four ball champions Alan Anderson and Ryan Ezard combining magnificently once again and looking like the partnership to beat going forward.

Seven nearest the pin prizes were contested on the adjusted course Tim Baldwin the days big winner took home the second and 18th, Jeff Lodding celebrated claiming the sixth, Shaun Spicer was all smiles on the eighth, Greg Whiteman gladly received the wine for his effort on the tenth, a controlled Rhys Shepherd did enough to be awarded the 13th and Terry Clonan got lucky on the 20th.

There was only one grade and the winner was Irene Keogh with 38 pts, Irene also won the Monthly Medal.

The nine hole competition winner was also Irene on a C/B from Annette Mills with 17 pts.

Irene won everything on the day taking out N/P on both the 13th and 18th holes.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB STABBLEFORD was played on Saturday, December 17 at the Strathbogie Golf Club.

It was a beautiful sunny day and not too hot.

The course was in playable condition and finally we have been able to play all 18 holes.

Thanks go to the many helpers that have prepared the course this week.

We had 15 men and four ladies playing golf and we also had visitors from Yea included in the field.

Winner of the day was Rick Wills with 35 points, a visitor from Yea. Line Balls were won by Kevin Coghlan (from Yea) with 33 points, John Moore with 32 points, Chris Bennett with 31 points, Phil Fry (new member - welcome to the club) with 30 points and Stuart Jarvis with 30 points also from Yea. Nearest the pin winners was John Moore on the fourth (sponsored by Luke Marple), Phil Fry on the eighth (sponsored by Eleanor Barns), Alan Pell (from Yea) on the 15th (sponsored by Mawson’s Bakery) and Chris Bennett on the 17th and (sponsored

Ladies Drive and Pitch was won this week by Victoria Fry (new member welcome to the club) on the fourth green (sponsored by Helen Hill).

Straightest drive was won by Kristen Moore.

After golf all members sat down to a Christmas afternoon tea supplied by the Ladies on the Catering Committee.

BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT - Division five Winning overall against Mooroo-

pna on home turf 12 - 34 to 2 - 28 has kept division five on top of the ladder.

A four on the last end before lunch put Marg Harrison, Ron Harrison, Marion Gittus, Graeme Toy (s) seven up at the lunch break.

In the second half they continued their good form to win seven of the remining nine ends and win the game 23 - 14.

In a low scoring match where the highest winning end score was a two, Robyn Hyland, Mike Dibben, Ruth Underwood, Glen Bell (s) was unable to chase down Mooroopna.

The visitors won the game by three, 11 -14.

The next game for division five is at home against Violet Town before the Christmas break.

MIDWEEK PENNANT - Division three Another successful match for Avenel winning all three rinks at home against Euroa, 16 - 94 to 0 - 54.

Howard Geldard, Rusty Schwab, Graham Lewis, Dennis McGregor (s) got off to a flying start to be ten up at the lunch break.

In the first two ends after lunch, they added a six and a five to put the game beyond doubt.

A commanding win 36 - 15 to Avenel.

Winning six consecutive ends before lunch, adding 16 shots to the scorecard put a stranglehold on the game for Spud Furletti, Charlie Kemp, Pam Pedder, Geoff Hateley (s).

With consistent bowling in the second half, they maintained a healthy led to win the game 31 - 19.

Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) went into the lunch break only one up.

Euroa drew even twice in the second half and had a one-shot lead on the 21st end.

The last four ends were won by Avenel for the seven-shot win, 27 20.

The next game for division three and the last game before the Christmas break is away against Seymour VRI. WEEKEND PENNANT - Division three A morale boosting win for Avenel playing at home against top four team Mooroopna, 14 - 91 to 4 - 81.

Fay Hateley, Rusty Schwab, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) lead for the entire game.

The end result of fourteen shots up in the 28 - 14 win was the highest winning margin for the game.

James Wall, Kate Donovan, Josh McDonald, Brett McDonald (s) was also on the wining side of the scorecard 25- 18.

They gained the lead on the eighth end and although challenged by Mooroopna, a four on end 21 consolidated a seven-shot win.

Howard Geldard, Donna Rowley, Dennis McGregor, Jake Wall (s) was involved in a close game all day.

Scores were even at 15 all on the 19th end.

Mooroopna won the next five ends scoring singles.

Avenel scored a single on the last end, but Mooroopna had the edge and won by four, 20 - 16.

After leading by nine shots at the break for lunch, Spud Furletti, Pam Pedder, Graham Lewis, Geoff Hateley (s) lost 22 - 29.

Mooroopna came storming home to win the last seven ends overtaking Avenel on the 20th end.

The next game for division three is away against Stanhope on January 14.

WEEKEND PENNANT - Division seven Although losing to ladder leaders Rushworth, 0 - 31 to 4 - 81, Avenel remain in the top four.

Ross Sinclair, Marion Gittus, Jenny Furletti, Glen Bell (s) had a healthy lead 15 - 3 when Rushworth hit a purple patch and scored a four and two fives in consecutive ends to propel them into the lead.

That was enough to give the visitors the lead and eventually the game 25 - 18.

Mike Dibben, Ruth Underwood, Charlie Kemp, Graeme Toy (s) try as they did, never headed an accurate Rushworth rink.

However, a late challenge, winning four of the last five ends bought some credibility.

But Rushworth had enough runs on the board to protect them from the late challenge and won 22 - 13.

The next game for Avenel is away against Seymour on January 14.

Congratulations to Joyce White who was awarded life membership at the Christmas Party last Saturday night.

Joyce has been a member of Avenel Bowls Club since 1998 and was secretary for 13 years.

Joyce has worked tirelessly for many years in various positions at the club as well as being a successful bowler.

Strong tennis results in road to finals Division A

By Mark Borthwick WITH the whole Association being hosted by Euroa, we had 18 courts in use and over 100 players participating on the day.

Euroa Lawn played Avenel in a tight game with Euroa striking early winning the first three sets with Row Ellis, Gayle Furphy, Caid Miller and Bob Furphy and then Row backing up with Kim Saxon giving Euroa an 11-game buffer.

Avenel then hit back hard with an 8-0.

Avenel went into the mixed one game up but despite a valiant effort from Bob and Gayle, Avenel held on to a three-game win.

St Paul’s played Strathbogie which should have been a close game but with Ella Hill in sparkling form only conceding two games to her opponents, it was going to be a hard day for Strathbogie.

Mayra Walsh and Meg Ford got pipped in a tie breaker by St Paul’s, Sarah Ternes and Rosie Cameron whilst Jai Harrington and Scott Watson powered through with an impressive 8-1.

St Paul’s went on to win eight sets to one and fin-

ished 39 games up.

Strathbogie will need to regroup if they are to be in finals contention.

Moglonemby played Longwood in a fight for consolidating a finals birth.

Sue Vaughan and Marlene Hanrahan stamped their authority early with an 8-0 over Leanne Armstrong and Stevie Mildren-Nicel and then to further Mogs chances, Grant Davey and Michael Nolan had a win 8-2 over Bede Redfern and Jacob Tarran.

Leanne and Lily Meehan fought back for Longwood 8-3 over Marlene and an injured Robyn Johnson.

Marlene was on fire being 18 games up leading the way as captain.

Mogs were too strong on the day winning by 21 games.

Gooram played Terip with the first men’s and ladies firing for Gooram with Mark Borthwick and Josh Higgins 8-3 and Chris Ellis and Julie Harrington 8-3.

Chris and Judy Sands then went a step further 8-1.

Avie Hill made her debut with Mother Kelly for an 8-6 over Kalarni and Elise Durkin.

It was left up to the Euroa young guns in Indie and Elise to wrestle a set from St Pauls 8-7 over Caroline and Avie.

St Pauls fielded a very strong team and went on to win by 29.

Kelly Hill being 15 games up won the BOG. Going to the break until January 21.

It will be a close race to the finals.

The junior competition, hot shots and coaching programs had their final hit out on Friday night before the Christmas break.

For the first time in many years there will not be a Christmas Bowls tournament due to Asbestos removal in the clubrooms that was aggravated in the October floods.

The 2022 Christmas breakup was a lovely evening where 59 bowlers and their partners enjoyed each other’s company at the Euroa Hotel over a meal and drinks.

Club president Richard Noble thanked all who attended the function and volunteered within the club during the year whilst also enlightening members on the clubs plans for 2023.

A grade secures its maiden victory

By Scott Hamilton THE Euroa A grade cricketers played host to Karramomus CC for Round 6 of the Sherbourne Terrace Haisman Shield.

The magpies took an unchanged line-up into the clash as both teams were looking to go into the Christmas break with a win.

On a picturesque Saturday afternoon at Euroa Friendlies Oval, officials produced a dry looking pitch with a beautiful outfield.

The pitch looked as though there would be plenty in it for both bat and ball.

Euroa lost the toss and Karramomus elected to bowl first.

Euroa pair Vaughan Kirk and Scott Hamilton opened the batting for the hosts.

With the second ball of the day, Karramomus opening bowler Lachlan Keady bowled Kirk around his legs.

With the score at 1/0, Hamilton was joined at the crease

by Nic Hill.

The pair batted well, putting together a 73-run partnership before the next wicket fell.

Euroa lost crucial middle order wickets.

At 7/132, Will Jackson joined Rod Jones at the crease.

The pair put together a strong 49 run partnership to

help Euroa to their highest total of the year, posting a competitive 7/181 off 45 overs.

Euroa opening bowlers Will Jackson and Andrew Squires bowled well to open the innings.

A strong opening partnership of 74 by Karramomus pair McGrath and Delahey helped the visitors reach the drinks break on top.

After the drinks break, Sham Dadallage took the first scalp with a sharp caught and bowled.

A great spell of bowling by Dadallage and Velagala helped Euroa stem the flow of runs.

A strong partnership between Forge and Goomsbridge was then brought to an end by a sharp run out.

The wickets continued to fall for Karramomus.

A great spell of bowling by Vaughan Kirk and Ryan Hill (three wickets each) allowed Euroa to bowl the visitors out for 151.

As the final wicket tumbled, Euroa celebrated its first win for the 2022/2023 season.

The season recommences on January 7.

Mixed results for juniors batting second in chase for win UNDER 14 CRICKET

By Grant Davey CAPTAIN Ollie Swain has struggled with the bat so far this season, but that didn’t stop him from putting his hand up to face the first ball.

He and Ollie Wilson put on a 42-run partnership, both playing shots all over the ground. Ollie Wilson was first to go bowled for a solid 20, leaving Euroa 1/42.

In-form batsmen Ethan Saxon came to the crease with an aggressive mindset.

He shared a quick fire 20 run partnership before Captain Swain was bowled for a solid 22, Euroa 2/61.

Will Davey and Sam Mills both gone cheaply putting Old Students in a strong position as Euroa fell to 5/111.

Ethan Saxon retiring at 40 brought Koby Ross to the crease.

Koby and Hami Wolfenden put on a 36-run partnership with Koby dominating the bowling scoring multiple fours and the first six of the season.

Hami settled in well looking very comfortable until he was runout from a direct hit, Euroa 6/147.

Koby Ross was next to go caught in close for 28, his best innings this year.

Patrick Murphy was next in but was trapped for a first

ball duck LBW putting the bowler on a hat trick, Euroa 8/169.

Ethan Saxon saw off the hat trick ball then he and Cooper Goodall looked to score the last 12 runs from five overs with no more batmen to come.

Cooper Goodall showed great maturity, he and Ethan turned over the strike both realising they had plenty of balls left.

Ethan Saxon scoring the winning runs with a four, while also bringing up his second 50 of the year.

Cooper Goodall finished with three not out from 24 balls but more importantly helped his team over the line.

Ben Creevey who volunteered to play for an undermanned Old Students finished with a respectable 0/10 off his two overs.

Coach Robertson said after the game it was “great to see Koby Ross and Ollie Swain score some runs, and Ethan Saxon get another 50”.

crowd gathering at the Friendlies, Euroa hosted Old Students for the second day of their two-day match.

With a mammoth score of 242 to chase down, the boys had set themselves a challenge to spend valuable time at the crease and bat out their 45 overs.

Euroa started well with both openers, Mitch Walters (14) and Archie Wilson (23), combining for a partnership of 30 off the first seven overs.

This quick start gave the team a foundation to have a tilt at the win and allowed the batters that followed the luxury of working their way into the innings.

Walter Jackson (29) came to the crease in a bid to continue the pursuit of runs and had solid partnerships with Wilson, Kusuma Wolfenden and Wil Smyth.

Unfortunately, wickets fell consistently and when Jackson was dismissed, Euroa had lost a lot of its firepower and was teetering on the edge of an early end to the match with the score at 5-92.

With 20 overs left to play and still 150 runs to chase down, it gave a chance for the boys who hadn’t spent much time in the middle to do just that.

The excitement machine, Declan Antonis (12), came in swinging and was able to find the boundary with some

After Declan was caught on the boundary, the runs became irrelevant and time at the crease was the order of the day.

Jai McMillan and Leo Murphy both put a high price on their wicket and were determined not to throw it away, whilst Cale Robertson (12*) was the perfect example of

valuing his wicket, facing over 50 balls to guide the team to the last over.

When Ethan Saxon was dismissed in the 45th over, Euroa were all out for 124.

In the end the score was just too large to overcome, but yet again the boys showed their determination and dug in to make the opposition stay out in the field for

the entire allocated 45 overs.

Now it’s time for the team to enjoy the Christmas break and come back refreshed for another home game on January 13 against Notre Dame/ St Brendan’s.

Euroa tournament named best in country EUROA’S Labor Day Tournament has been named the “Most Outstanding Tournament in 2022”, with the award presented last week at Tennis Australia’s prestigious Newcombe Medal ceremony.

Bob and Gayle Furphy, on behalf of the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club, were presented with the award by Todd Woodbridge during the ceremony last Monday.

In a statement released by the Lawn Tennis Club, they thanked everyone involved with the Labor Day tournament last year, and all the years previous, who helped win this award.

“A tournament like this goes through constant refinement and development over the years in our desire to do things a little better,” it said.

“A hard act to follow, but the organizing committee and all the volunteers will saddle up again next March for yet another great tournament.

“What makes this feat even more remarkable is that out of the three nominated finalists for the award, the Euroa tournament was the only one based in a regional town and not backed by professional tennis organizations.”

After being nominated for the award, Euroa Lawn Tennis Club president Bob Furphy said he was ecstatic about being a finalist.

“This is a brilliant achievement for our small town,” he said.

“We have been doing this for a long time and we’re really proud of the tournament we put on each year.

“While we know it’s a great event, it’s just so nice to have it recognised more widely.”

Mr Furphy and his wife Gayle (tournament manager) have been involved in running the annual event for more than 25 years.

“This recognises a lot of blood, sweat and tears from many people over

many years,” he said.

“I am so grateful to the tournament army which turns up year after year.”

The Labour Day Tournament, held for the 92nd time in March this year, closed entries just 20 minutes after opening to the public.

“The tournament is very popular with teams and players knowing they have to get in quickly to secure entry,” Mr Furphy said.

“Players appreciate that we run a professional tournament and keep to a tight schedule.”

The criteria for the award stated the event must offer a complete package of on and off court activities, a high standard of player amenities, a positive tournament atmosphere and engagement from sponsors, the community and local media.

The tournament was named most outstanding tournament at the Tennis Victoria Awards in October.

Longest day a huge success SIX lads and one lady took on the 72 hole ‘Longest Golf Day’ challenge for charity, raising an incredible $5000 during the 12-hour event in Euroa.

The golfers played from 6am to 6pm in what was a wonderful effort by the members and their guests.

The money raised will go towards cancer projects, with this year’s funds raised taking the progressive tally for the Euroa group to more than $25,000 over the last five years.

Lucas Paul was the winner of the golf, but cancer research was the real winner for the day.

The presentations were made even more special when the event special ambassador Chelsea Maher, who is on her own cancer journey, presented the awards to the tired, but proud participants.
