Overall crime drop THE total amount of criminal incidents in the Strathbogie local government area has seen a significant decrease, however, there are concerns about the sharp increase of family violence crimes.

Total criminal incidents decreased by 15.1 per cent from last year based on new statistics announced by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) on Thursday last week.

These statistics cover recorded crimes across Victoria for the year ending June 30, 2022.

After registering 478 total criminal incidents in the year ending June 2021, this number dropped to 406 incidents in the Strathbogie local government area for this year.

Criminal incidents were spread across the shire, with 122 occurring in Nagambie, 113 in Euroa, 25 in Avenel

and 20 in Violet Town.

Family incidents decreased across the state by 3.1pc in the last 12 months, with 90,553 incidents recorded across Victoria.

The rate of family incidents also decreased, down 3.7pc to 1,373.5 incidents per 100,000 Victorians.

This number however was not represented in the region, which saw a 19.4pc increase of incidents relating to breaching family violence

orders, going from 65 last year to 79 this year.

When it comes to offences recorded, the increase was even more significant.

214 offences relating to breaches of family violence orders were recorded this year, an alarming 81pc increase from the 90 offences recorded last year.

The increase in these offences was also seen in neighbouring regions such as Benalla, Wodonga and Wangaratta.

Member for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell spoke about the concerning numbers in the region.

“There’s no specialist family violence court or Victorian Legal Aid office in the region to help victims of family violence,” Ms Maxwell said.

“Women who experience violence are 10 times more likely to face legal problems than others in the community.

Tyres slashed in local car park THERE are growing safety concerns about the Euroa train station car park after a local woman had all four of their tyres slashed after parking it there overnight.

Samantha Granat was shocked to discover the damage to her car after returning from an overnight trip to Melbourne to visit loved ones.

Ms Granat, who lives on a disability pension, had left the car at the station’s car park before boarding a 2.30pm train on Thursday, September 8.

By the time she had returned at 9am on the Friday morning, the tires had been slashed.

Initially thinking that someone had taken the air out of them, Mr Granat took the car to be serviced locally at Murphy’s Motors who informed her that all

four tyres been slashed.

The RACV report of the vehicle indicates that “all four tyres have been sliced in the side wall”.

This included “twice in the front right tyre, once in the front left, three times in the rear right tyre and a further two slices to the rear left tyre.”

Ms Granat expressed concern over the unprovoked incident and hoped to inform others in the community of the risks of parking in the station car park.

“I was in shock to see this happen,” she said.

“I’ve just been mourning the loss of a pet and for this to happen really hurt.

“I’m not sure if anyone saw anything and I don’t think the area has good cameras, but if anyone knows anything please let someone know.

“People should be careful at the car park there.

“If I was there when it happened you don’t know how the person would react, they could’ve hurt somebody.”

Ms Granat’s car was eventually towed back to her home in Euroa from the station and the tyres have been replaced.

Police have been made aware of the incident and a report has been filed.

Plan for regionalisation launched; Indi MP meets with treasurer

TRIPLE ZERO CONCERNS: Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland says the triple zero system is failing locals.

Strathbogie ambulance response times hit new low THE Nationals say new data is exposing the shocking state of local ambulance response times, with the average wait for an emergency Code 1 callout now 24 minutes and 44 seconds across the Strathbogie local government area.

The statistics come as a damning report from the inspector general of emergency management finds 33 Victorians have died waiting on the phone to triple zero services.

Just 28 per cent of ambulances are arriving on time.

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said the government was failing locals in their hour of need.

“Local paramedics are doing all they can but they have been under resourced by the Andrews Government,” Ms Cleeland said.

“We know the pandem-

ic has placed additional strain on the health system but the government failed to put plans in place at the beginning of the pandemic to support our triple zero system.

“I find it unbelievable that the Andrews Government actually cut triple zero call takers during the pandemic and they now refuse to take responsibility for the consequences of that decision.

“The Inspector General made it clear that problems predated COVID. “From 2015, Ministers were warned that emergency call takers needed more funding to ensure the service kept paced with population growth and yet nothing was done.”

Ms Cleeland expressed concern about the trend in Strathbogie with many indicators worsening for three consecutive quar-

ters.

“Strathbogie has seen three consecutive quarters of response time blowouts, with the average wait in an emergency nearly 25 minutes,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Imagine watching someone you love in a lifethreatening situation and not knowing if an ambulance will rock up in time to save their life - this is modern-day Victoria.

“While this crisis is unfolding across our region the Andrews Government has cut $2 billion from our health sector at a time when we can least afford it.

“The government that got us into this mess is not the one to get us out of it.

“Only The Nationals will ensure regional Victorians’ health is front and centre and our Andrews Government inflicted health crisis is put to an end.”

A NEW ambition to promote regionalisation will face financial challenges, with Indi MP Helen Haines flagging concerns over potential “significant funding cuts” to the regions in next month’s federal budget, after meeting with Treasurer Jim Chalmers last week.

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) has set a target of 11 million people living prosperously outside the capital cities by 2032, a key goal announced as part the Regionalisation Ambition 2032 launched at its National Summit in Canberra.

Dr Haines backed the idea of growing regional populations and highlighted issues in regional areas that need funding such as housing, health care, child care and telecommunications.

The RAI target will see an extra 500,000 people living in the regions, above the estimated prediction of 10.5 million.

A study indicates strong preference for more balanced growth across the country, with a ‘megacities’ scenario including Melbourne and Sydney, being the least preferred outcome, while ‘satellite’, ‘rail’ and ‘inland’ cities scenarios being the most preferred “Living in regional Australia brings many opportunities and experiences people in the big cities don’t enjoy, but it also brings challenges and some difficulties,” Dr Haines said.

“The Regional Australia Institute’s goal to increase the number of people living in regional Australia to 11 million by 2032 is a step to realising the potential we have in the regions, and recognising what investment needs to be made to support more Australians living happily in regional Australia.

MORE FUNDING FOR REGIONS: Helen Haines met with Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Tuesday last week, the same day the RAI plan was launched, to raise her concerns about funding to regional Australia.

“In Indi we experience the best of living in regional Australia - friendly communities, beautiful and diverse landscapes and thriving industries.

“But we are also facing issues with housing, health care, child care and telecommunications.”

Dr Haines said the 20 targets named by the RAI highlight the challenges we face in these areas but also put forward practical, achievable solutions that would make it possible to increase opportunities and prosperity for those of us living outside regional cities.

She said it’s appropriate that we are having this discussion about the potential of regional Australia as we approach the first federal budget of the new government, and discuss how Labor will invest in the regions.

“It is concerning to hear there may be significant cuts to funding for the regions in the budget,” she said.

“I criticised the last government for making big promises to northern Australia for projects without business cases that seemed to serve a political interest, not a public interest.

“It’s right that the govern-

ment review previous spending promises but it is not right to treat every project in regional Australia in this way, or to use funding cuts to regional Australia as a way to save money in the budget.”

Dr Haines met with Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Tuesday last week, the same day the RAI plan was launched, to raise her concerns about funding to regional Australia.

She told him regional Australia needs significant investment to thrive and to reach its full potential - “it’s too important to let it fall by the wayside”.

RAI chief executive officer Liz Ritchie said the Regionalisation Ambition 2032 - a Framework to Rebalance the Nation, was a national first.

It places 20 key targets at the centre of strengthening our regions which will close the divide between life in the city and the country.

It focuses on regional housing, education, health, jobs and skills, digital inclusion, transport, childcare, community participation, migration, climate, innovation and the resilience of regional communities - as well as population.

“That means you’re a long way from help when you’re living in a violent domestic relationship and don’t have the resources to get the support you need to protect your family and

secure your safety.”

The rate of recorded offences across the state decreased 10.6pc to 7,121.5 per 100,000 Victorians in the last 12 months, as did the number of offences, down 10pc to 469,506.

This decrease was driven by a reduction in Breach of Chief Health Officer (CHO) directions related to the COVID-19 pandemic (down 69.3 per cent or 22,345 to 9,919 offences), obtain benefit by

deception (down 20.7 pc or 6,025 to 23,066 offences) and drug possession offences (down 17.5pc or 5,062 to 23,800 offences).

CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley discussed the downward trend in crime across the state.

“Victoria has seen a notable decrease in overall recorded crime levels during the COVID-19 pandemic period,” she said.

“Decreases in acquisitive

crime such as thefts and deception have contributed to the lowest victimisation numbers and rates since 2005”.

“Decreases in Breaches of Chief Health Officer orders have continued to be the main driver of the decreases in key crime measures in the last 12 months from peaks in 2020.

“Deception and drug offences also contributed to these decreases.”

Liberal candidate discusses need for hospital p investment in Euroa

By GUS RIDDER EUROA Health reopened their x-ray facilities last Monday, with the hospital taking the opportunity to stress the need for government funding to continue these vital services.

According to Euroa Health’s innovation and special projects manager Melissa Seymour, more than 40 x-rays were conducted during the first week of opening.

Following the reopening, a meeting was held where Euroa Health pleaded for immediate action to support the operation of services at the hospital.

With the new x-ray machines in place, the operational cost of running the radiography unit is being placed with the board who are having to balance the budget between the aged care facility GraniteHill and the Acute Hospital.

With many hospitals at breaking point across the state, the board at Euroa Health led by Linsey Siede is calling on government to support their hospital to do more for their community.

With only half of their beds in operation the hospital can do more with state based financial support.

An online petition led by Liberal candidate for Euroa Brad Hearn received overwhelming community responses in just two days.

The petition called on the State Government to do more and support the hospital in Euroa which is looking to reduce services if costs are not met.

“I am proud that the online petition called on the sitting member to finally do something for Euroa Health and can say it is acted on 12 years later then it should have been.”

As reported last week, The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland also demanded action and vowed to fight for additional funding if elected in November.

“This is a terrible inequity and we must fight for change,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It is an injustice Euroa receives almost no funding from the state simply because it was founded a century ago as a community-owned hospital.”

The Bush Nursing Hospital of Euroa is one of only two bush nursing hospitals still operating acute beds, with only five remaining bush nursing hospitals still in operation across the state.

“The truth is our health care across this seat is some of the worst in the state because of poor advocacy,” Mr Hearn said.

“In some shires they do not have public health options only private urgent care facilities.

“The sad truth that has been

communicated to me by the community is that some of our bush hospitals are looking at reducing their services or ultimately closure all together due to increased costs.”

Mr Hearn recently had conversations with shadow minister for Health Georgie Crozier about regional healthcare concerns while Ms Crozier visited the electorate.

“My conversation with Georgie Crozier has put our seat on the map for improved healthcare services,” Mr Hearn said.

“We are committed to pivoting $35 billion from a metro train line and putting all that money into Victorian health.

“I will ensure that our share of this money will come into fixing rural healthcare services in our towns.

“Country communities deserve the same respect as the city and I will ensure that a Liberal Government will deliver for our country towns.”

Ms Crozier discussed the importance of regional healthcare providers, stressing the need for further investment.

“Bush nursing centres play a vital role in providing health services to remote and rural communities and it is important that they receive adequate funding in order to ensure they are able to continue provide care, services, and support to regional Victorians,” she said.

“Regional and rural health services are vital to local communities in providing care to residents and visitors to the area.

“I am committed to improving health outcomes for all Victorians in both metropolitan and regional areas.”

NEW HOLIDAY PROGRAM ANNOUNCED: Strathbogie Shire Council has announced a jampacked school holiday schedule, with events on from September 19 until October 2.

Council announce ‘Here and Now’ school holiday program THERE will be plenty of activities during these school holidays for the youth of Strathbogie Shire.

The ‘Here and Now’ school holiday program features an array of activities for all interest areas including film, cooking and skateboarding workshops, a free movie and a huge music and arts festival.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said there were opportunities to learn skills in many different areas.

“We have two cooking workshops where our youth can learn some fantastic Italian and Mexican recipes,” Cr Binks said.

“There’s some more fastpaced action with the awesome crew from GNARLY Neighbours conducting skateboarding workshops in Nagambie and the YMCA will take workshops in Euroa and Violet Town.

“If creativity is more your thing, there is a fantastic two-part workshop where you can learn how to create your own artwork and short films that will be projected at the Here and Now Youth Music and Arts Festival, which is also a huge part of our jam-packed school holiday program.

“The festival is an exciting all ages event celebrating the music, art and projections of young people from across the Strathbogie Shire.

“The event will feature a bevy of bands and soloists including Bad Ibis, Inversion, YNOT, The Counterfeits, Asha Bright, Nick Ke-

ogh, Viceroy’s Meiki Bosland and others.

“There will also be art exhibitions, short film screenings, projections, and food vans with free buses running from Benalla, Wangaratta, Shepparton, Seymour, Nagambie, and Euroa as well as other destinations if needed.

Euroa railway precinct to benefit from added funding

By GUS RIDDER THE State Government will provide Strathbogie Shire Council with a $100,000 funding boost to create a master plan for the land surrounding the Euroa Railway Station.

Funded by the Labor Government’s Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program, a further $30,000 will be contributed by the council to complete the project.

The Euroa Precinct Master Plan Project will investigate future opportunities at the Euroa train station site, including opportunities for developing any surplus land.

The Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program provides funding to local governments and community organisations for small-scale transport projects, evidence-based transport and freight studies, and funding to redesign and trial new ways in which transport services at a local level can be delivered.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes discussed the benefits of the funding boost.

Independent candidate joins ahead of election LAWYER Marilyn Nuske will be running as an Independent candidate for the Northern Region ahead of November’s state election.

This region represents the Victorian Legislative Council, the state’s upper house, and includes several districts including the Euroa and Shepparton districts.

Current Northern Victoria members include Tania Maxwell of Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party, Labor’s Jaclyn Symes and Tim Quilty of the Liberal Democrats.

Working as a lawyer in sole practice in regional Victoria for over a decade, Ms Nuske says it has given her insight into the real issues facing regional Victorians.

“The Nuske family has a long farming history in regional Victoria,” she said.

“I inherited my love of the country and wildlife from my forebears who migrated from Germany to South Australia and established themselves in the Wimmera.

Let’s look at the heroes mentioned.

Blaxland was one of two brothers who were enticed to NSW by promises of large land grants and rapidly developed a reputation as an aggressive disagreeable citizen determined to advance his own interests at any cost.

Wentworth came to NSW after being charged in England with armed robbery four times (acquitted on each occasion).

Charles Lawson was an officer in the Rum Corp who sat as an unqualified ‘judicial officer’ on many of the early court proceedings in the colony always supporting John Macarthur in his many fights with various governors.

He retired from the Rum Corp and amassed vast resources as a grazier after advantageous land grants.

The three are not quite a collection of heroes we should acknowledge.

Hume and Hovell: Two land grant beneficiaries who ended up in acrimonious dispute, publicly accusing each other of claiming the major role in their journey of discovery.

Burke and Wills: All recent analysis of their ill-fated expedition indicates it was badly planned, badly led by Burke and motivated principally by intercolonial rivalries.

The only survivor of that ill-fated journey, John King, was saved by Aboriginal people who looked after him for months before Howitt arrived.

Burke dismissed them as his ‘inferiors’.

Brave but stupid is an appropriate comment.

Last but not least was Major Mitchell, an explorer who came into regular conflict with Aboriginal people on his journeys in our region.

Contemporary accounts indicate he

attacked and killed many on the Murray at Lake Benanee near Euston and on the Darling near Menindee.

It was reported at one of these events that Mitchell’s men fired at least 7080 shots into Aboriginal men trying to escape across the water.

There was nothing heroic about his actions.

If we seek heroes to acknowledge then we should not look to classic colonial exploiters whose dominant interest was the pursuit of wealth and status at any cost.

Let’s find a neutral day as Australia Day. Charlie Brydon, Euroa

A question to councillors regarding solar panels

WHAT a peculiar letter to this page (September 14) from Diane Grant.

Diane expresses her opinion, which she is entitled to do of course, that firstly the democratically elected councillors are not the ones to make a decision in relation to our national day of celebration and then goes on to express her admiration for what were a bunch of murderous plunderers.

We didn’t discover Africa - we evolved in Africa and we all descend from those first refugees who walked out of that continent.

History is still grappling as to who was the worst of Diane’s first set of heroes, the Spanish or the British?

The Spanish stole roomfuls of gold from the hapless Inca’s in the name of their Lord Jesus Christ and the British ripped a Trillion Dollars out of India and countless millions from the other 83 countries they invaded.

Diane then goes on to laud everybody from Vasco De Gama to Neil Armstrong for their courageous journeys, but doesn’t mention the greatest journey of them all - the journey out of Africa (currently put at 65,000 years ago) by the First Nations people.

They walked to India and then walked, island-hopped, down to this continent.

This is (currently) put at some 40,000

I RECENTLY read a report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency.

It made the claim that we will have to deal with 78 million tonnes of antiquated solar panel waste and tens of millions of tonnes of unrecyclable turbine blades by 2050.

My question to the councillors is one of curiosity - how does the council propose to dispose of dormant solar panels that have reached the end of their life?

For example, what is your existing plan?

Further, will you be financially assisting your community to dispose of their obsolete solar panels?

Second book in Taungurung language released by elder THE Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) has announced the release of the next children’s book in Taungurung and English languages, following the successful launch of Bijil Ba Wudhi Deberra in June.

Gukra-U Garringa Bijilal (Bijil’s Bigger Cloak) is authored

by Aunty Loraine Padgham, Taungurung Elder.

This is the second book in the Bijil series - the first received glowing reviews from readers and now features in a range of schools, kindergartens and bookstores across Taungurung Country.

The Bijil book series focuses on the ordinary activities a Taungurung family would have experienced prior to colonisation.

The books include a QR code that can be scanned to listen to the story read in Taungurung language.

“I was overwhelmed by the public response for of Bijil Ba Wudhi Deberra, which was the first children’s book to use Taungurung language,” Aunty Loraine said.

“What started out as an exercise in exploring and applying Taungurung language dem-

“The revitalisation of Taungurung language is a longstanding priority of the Taungurung community and is reflected as a core focus in TLaWC’s strategic plan,” Mr Burns said.

“The addition of these new books into schools and kindergartens ensures that children

have access to Taungurung language from a young age.”

The series is dedicated to the Taungurung people, past and present, who have cared for Taungurung Country and culture since time immemorial.

One dead, another critically injured in Violet Town truck crash MONDAY’S collision between two trucks on the Hume Freeway in Violet Town has resulted in the death of one of the drivers.

Both truck drivers were airlifted to hospital following the incident, with a 56 year old male driver from Maldon dying overnight.

The other driver, a 53 year old

from Parkes, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The crash happened just after 2pm on Monday, with several emergency vehicles responding to the scene.

As of Tuesday morning, the Melbourne-bound lanes of the Hume Freeway remained closed

setting up detours.

Tabling of Euroa Health petition Ryan’s last act in parliament OUTGOING MP Steph Ryan will table Euroa Health’s petition calling for ongoing state government funding as her final act in parliament on Wednesday.

By the time of publishing 1402 people had signed the petition demanding public funding to secure the long-term future of the local hospital.

Ms Ryan will tell the Parliament that Euroa Health should be supported to provide a service that was accessible to local people.

“We live in the only shire in Victoria where there is no public hospital,” Ms Ryan said.

“Our hospital provides critical services and it should be supported by the state government to provide those services to anyone who needs them.

“Euroa Health’s future is bleak unless the government reverses its

dogmatic opposition to providing the money necessary for it to keep operating.

“The closure of the hospital would be a disaster for the region putting more pressure on an already mismanaged and underfunded regional health system.

“I leave Parliament with absolute confidence that if Annabelle is elected as the Member for Euroa she will fight for the hospital’s future.”

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said she would continue Ms Ryan’s passionate and unrelenting advocacy for Euroa Health if elected.

“The community can be assured that I will not stop fighting until essential funding is secured,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Just a fortnight ago I was lucky enough to open Euroa Health’s new imaging service.

FINAL ACT: Member for Euroa Steph Ryan will table a petition supporting Euroa Health as her final act in parliament.

“We simply can’t let this crucial infrastructure go to waste.

“Steph has run with the Euroa Health baton for a long time and it

certainly won’t hit the ground if I’m elected in November.”

Art workshops held in picturesque ranges BALMATTUM Hill, overlooking Euroa Township, is a popular walking spot for many locals.

On this occasion, the hill recently hosted a drawing workshop attended by locals and others from as far as Melbourne, Tallarook and Nagambie.

Local artist Ann Cremean shared her skills and passion for sketching amongst the granite tors of Strathbogie Ranges.

Using the rotunda as a base, workshop participants made etchings on rocks and also explored further up the hill, finding locations to sit and sketch.

An assortment of artworks were created, then shared and discussed later in the day.

These ranged from ink and charcoal drawings, rock impressions, abstracts that began with an elaborate rock etching and landscapes taken from the spectacular vistas.

Everyone expressed their joy in connecting and looking so closely at the natural world around them.

It was clear too, that exciting new friendships were being seeded over delicious morning tea and lunch.

Strathbogie Ranges Conservation Management Network (SRCMN) is very happy that Ann Cremean will be running another workshop on Sunday, September 25, among extraordinary granite tours at Ruffy.

No art experience is necessary, just a desire to have fun with experimental painting this time - using acrylic paints and collage to create images of the local granite.

“Spirit Matters” THE SERVANT QUEEN. Despite her age, there was wide-spread disbelief at hearing of Queen Elizabeths’ passing. She was the reliable rock through unreliable times, benevolent monarch and matriarch to millions; a woman of noble character apart from her nobility. Her praise-worthy qualities are wellknown yet she remained humble, calling herself, ‘servant of the people.’

(Matt 20:28) Elizabeth blessed the world throughout her 70 years reign. How did she remain so constant? Faith in Jesus. “By their fruit you shall know them”. (Matt.7:20) Incredibly, she worked two days prior to her death.

Signs of her frailness were evident; but her twinkling eyes and smiling face as she extended a hand to the new British PM Liz Truss, will be remembered as indicative of her extraordinary sense of purpose. The beautiful double rainbow over the Palace, was surely Gods’ approval concerning His beloved daughter.

Balmoral, Scotland was the Queens’ peaceful place on earth, but can’t compare to the new realm she’ll be experiencing. Secular media lauds the Queens’ exemplary qualities, without acknowledging her deep Christian faith, which she’d refer to, in interviews and Christmas messages. She solemnly asked people to pray for her that she would honour God while undertaking her royal duties. The Holy Spirit has been her comfort, (John 14:16) since she was anointed with oil, in the private, simple Christian ceremony, before the majesty of her public crowning in 1953. Serenity and grace crowned her.

The Queen met more people and travelled more than anyone else. Her life was graciously long, Gods’ gift to the nations; as was her friends’, the late great evangelist Pastor Billy Graham who died at 99. They formerly enjoyed meeting and no doubt have resumed talks in Heaven!

She once confided to a Church leader, that she’d ‘like to be alive when Jesus Christ returned to earth; because then_ she could lay her earthly crown down_ at His feet.” (Matt.28:18) Rev.4:10-11, ) Elizabeth, saint and subject of our ultimate King, will hear sweet words of favour and reward; ‘Well done good and faithful servant.”. (Matt.25:23) Our purpose should be to hear these words too.

The Queen, could rise above a lonely and unique responsibility, because she leaned on the Lords’ promise ‘to never leave nor forsake’ her. (Heb.13:5-6) She was Christs’ ambassador, a praying queen who attended church every week, who now bows at her Makers’ throne.

(Phil.2:10-11, Rom.14:12) She is free and made new; body, soul and spirit; (2 Cor.5:17) reunited with husband Phillip, who also pursued faith in His lifetime. Heaven is celebrating Elizabeths’ arrival as earth mourns her loss. (Luke 15:6-10) Do you know for certain that you’re going to Heaven? The only way to know, is to pray, asking Jesus forgiveness for your sin, (Rom.10:9-10) repent and believe that Christ sacrificed His life for you. Give Him thanks and your name will be entered (Malachi 3:16-18,) in the Lambs Book of Life. God has_ saved our gracious Queen!

STUD CATTLE TO BE JUDGED: The 130th Euroa Agricultural Show has confirmed its cattle sections ahead of the October event, with several classes announced.

Cattle sections confirmed for show THE 130th Annual Show to be held on October 22 (and 23 for horses only) is pleased to be hosting a stud cattle section again after a very successful Euroa Agricultural Society Autumn Beef Cattle Show earlier in the year.

There will be Junior Handler classes along with the general classes of Bos Indicus, British, European and Small Breeds for all animal categories (heifers, cows, and bulls of all ages).

The show will also include a commercial section

for non-stud cattle.

For those not up with the bovine language Bos Indicus breeds include Brahman, Droughtmaster and Santa Gertrudis; British Breeds include Angus, Herefords and Shorthorns; European Breeds include Charolais, Limousin and Simmental; and Small Breeds include Lowline, Dexter and Belted Galloway.

Junior Judging is a feature of the show for two different age groups, 8-14 years and 15-25 years.

Junior judging is a skill developed with practice and incorporates the skills of visual assessment of cattle (comparing one animal’s merits to another’s for the animal’s potential for breeding or marketing) and public speaking.

Longwood centre hosting touring exhibition THE Longwood Community Centre will be hosting the Shrine of Remembrance’s touring exhibition, ‘Changed Forever’, from October 28 until November 27.

A new exhibition, ‘Changed Forever: Legacies of Conflict’ interweaves stories of migrants from war-torn countries and recent veterans of overseas service, reflecting the range and depth of experiences of conflict.

The exhibition is based on a collection

of oral histories undertaken by the Shrine with Australian Defence Force veterans of recent conflicts and peacekeeping operations, and migrants to Australia who have come here because of conflict.

It explores the impacts of global and civil conflict in changing lives and shaping contemporary Australia.

The stories are enhanced with art, objects, photographs, audio-visuals and interactives.

LONGWOOD HOSTING EXHIBITION: A touring exhibition by the Shrine of Remembrance will be hosted at the Longwood Community Centre from late October to late November.

A koala was struck by a vehicle on the way into Strathbogie last Thursday.

After the incident, residents have said the driver did not stop at the scene.

“I am horrified to think that somebody could hit a koala on the road and drive off,” Strathbogie resident Barb Selby said.

“My neighbour has just witnessed it and rang me frantic,

not knowing what to do”.

Fortunately the local wildlife carer was called, tended the injured animal but tragically this koala had to be euthanised under the care of the local vet.

Dave Mitchell from the Koala Foundation spoke about the declining koala population in the region, and the comments he hears in the community.

“We don’t see koalas anymore or that was the first koala I’ve ever seen are somethings l hear from people in Strathbogie Shire,” he said.

“We’re now in breeding season (September-December) so

male koalas are on the move looking for a mate, and, because these groups are so far apart, they’re at great risk because of all the roads they need to cross.”

Here’s what those in the community can all do to assist: • if it’s safe to do so; pull over, turn on your hazard lights and check on the animal. If deceased, check the pouch as it may be carrying a living pouch joey; • if the animal needs euthanising, take it to the vet or organise a shooter from nearby property; • take injured wildlife

straight to local vets. They do not charge you for this service; • buy red spray paint and mark deceased animals to show others that the pouch has been checked; • drive slower to avoid hitting wildlife at high speed; and • call Wildlife Victoria at 8400 7300 or a local vet.

Euroa Third Age Club news DESPITE Thursday being declared a public holiday, the committee will still be holding their Annual General Meeting at 1.30pm.

All members are welcome to attend.

On Thursday, September 15 those who attended the concert at the club were superbly entertained by Judy Duryea, accompanied by Joyce Yates on the keyboard.

It was disappointing that more people weren’t there to enjoy a lovely afternoon.

Judy writes a lot of her own music and has a delightful voice, every word was easily understood.

Thank you to those who assisted in the kitchen, you did an amazing job!

Judy finished her performance with a rendition of Isla Grant’s song ‘I know we’ll meet again’ and we certainly will welcome her back some time in the future.

The October lunch will be held at the Flam Shan on Thursday, October 13 at 12pm.

Push for local family violence court and legal aid centre in region A SPECIALIST Family Violence Court and Legal Aid office in the North East proposed by Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party MP Tania Maxwell MP, Hume Riverina Community Legal Service and the Centre Against Violence have won broad support from community, family and legal advocacy organisations.

A roundtable bringing together key players and interested parties to define its need was held in Wangaratta yesterday.

Ms Maxwell, Wodongabased HRCLS and Wangaratta-based CAV say demand is so strong for family law services across communities where 140,000 people live that many are turned away or have to wait long periods for appointments.

“There’s no specialist family violence court or Victorian Legal Aid office in the region to help victims of family violence,” Ms Maxwell said.

“HRCLS - the only free legal service in the North East and southern NSW describes this as ‘a serious

injustice’. More than 80 per cent of its clients experience or are at risk of family violence.

“CAV confirms that people in violent relationships are invariably overwhelmed, confronted and confused when they seek to navigate the legal system.

“Women who experience violence are 10 times more likely to face legal problems than others in the community.

“But the nearest specialist court which works to prioritise the safety of victims and hold perpetrators accountable is in Shepparton, as is the nearest Legal Aid office.

“That means you’re a long way from help when you’re living in a violent domestic relationship and don’t have the resources to get the support you need to protect your family and secure your safety.”

The latest Crime Statistics Agency data - released on Thursday shows the number of family incidents exceeded the state average by 82.1pc in Benalla, in 52.3pc in Wodonga and 50.2pc in

“Supports provided with a Specialist Family Violence Court are vital for people who have experienced or who are experiencing family violence,” Ms Maher said.

“This includes significant support for victim survivors and also for perpetrators of violence including greater accountability measures which are not available through the current Magis-

trates’ Court structure.”

CAV chief executive Jaime Chubb said there had been a significant increase in family violence in the community in the past year, “especially high-risk situations”.

“The provision of a Specialist Family Violence Court and local Legal Aid service are vital pieces of a very large and challenging puzzle in our quest to tackle family violence in our community,” she said.

“We all acknowledge this is not a solution - but it is a very important part of both responding to and preventing violence in our homes.

“The service and powers that exist within these specialist courts will help services like our keep victim-survivors safe, and perpetrators in view and accountable.”

Ms Maxwell said she detailed the problems when she met Attorney General Jaclyn Symes in Parliament on August 17, and invited her to join the roundtable, together with Family Violence Prevention Minister Ros Spence MP.

Peranbin Primary College hold concert in Violet Town A FANTASTIC concert for Peranbin Primary College was held at the Violet Town Community Hall on Thursday night last week.

All of the students from across Peranbin - Baddaginnie, Swanpool, Strathbogie and Violet Town performed.

After two and a half years of restrictions the staff and school council were looking for a way to bring people together.

The Peranbin team decided on the theme of Wellbeing and the concert was carefully planned over three months.

The students danced and sang, exploring emotions and resilience and having heaps of fun.

There were many people

to thank - the Peranbin staff, families and volunteers.

Principal Angela Holleran thanked those involved in making the event a success.

“I make particular mention of our music teacher Jacinta Watt, John Dunn who fosters a love of music at Violet Town with lessons each week, Sile Coleman who leads our Violet Town choir and Damien Neil who mixed the sound for the evening,” Ms Holleran said.

“We were well fed by the Violet Town Lions Club, and there were also drinks and snacks sold as a fundraiser.

“Our Business Manager Kimberley Amott did a brilliant job doing the work behind the scenes.”

Just over 200 people from

across the communities of Peranbin Primary College came along to see the students perform.

The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive according to Ms Holleran.

“Their feedback was very positive, with many people saying it was fabulous, uplifting, buzzing and so welcome,” she said.

“I was a very proud principal, and so thankful for the effort the students, staff and families put in.”

Avoid food poisoning this long weekend A BARBECUE over the long weekend and during the AFL Grand Final is a great tradition but can quickly turn sour with food poisoning.

To avoid cases of Salmonella and Campylobacter food poisoning, the Food Safety Information Council recommends using a meat thermometer.

Former council chair Rachelle Williams discussed how to avoid food poisoning when using your barbecue.

“These infections are often linked to undercooking high-risk foods like sausages, hamburgers and poultry all of which should be cooked to 75C,” she said.

“The only way you know these foods are cooked correctly is to use a meat thermometer.

Know the drill before you grill WITH the long weekend and the AFL Grand Final approaching, it is the best possible time to check the gas on your barbecue.

Unfortunately, barbecue fires involving LP Gas cylinders are relatively common in Victoria.

Some of those barbecue fires can turn into house fires, resulting in serious burns and the loss and damage of family homes.

So, to stay safe, know the drill before you grill.

Get into the habit of doing a soapy water check.

Squirt your gas connection with soapy water to make sure there are no leaks.

If no bubbles appear, you’re safe to use.

Energy Safe Victoria has provided steps to follow every time you use your barbecue: • inspect the hose for signs of perishing or crack-

ing; if the hose is cracked or perished, don’t use the barbecue until the hose has been replaced.

• use a squeezy bottle filled with soapy water to check the connection for gas leaks (use dishwashing liquid and water).

• squirt the connection with the suds from the soapy water solution, bubbles will form if gas is escaping.

• leak-test the connection to the cylinder every time you connect it or change cylinders, serious leaks are common and can be very dangerous.

• check and leak test the connection every time you barbecue.

• if no bubbles appear, you’re safe to cook.

What to do if you see bubbles: • switch off the gas immediately • re-check the hose to

make sure it hasn’t perished • re-check connections to make sure they are tight; get into the habit of doing this regularly • check that the O ring on the connection hasn’t perished • check the gas cylinder for damage • re-test with soapy water, and if bubbles still form turn off the gas.

CHECK YOUR BARBIE: If you’re having a barbecue this long weekend, make sure to check for gas leaks to avoid fires.

Be alert for snakes in spring, summer WITH the weather warming up, snakes are starting to emerge from their winter hibernation to bask in the sun and search for food and a mate.

In North East Victoria, eastern brown snakes, tiger snakes and red bellied black snakes are the most common species spotted.

All of them are highly venomous.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) senior wildlife projects officer Leila Brook discussed the return of snakes this spring and what to do if confronted by one.

“While these three species are venomous, it is rare for them to bite people,” Ms Brook said.

“Most snake bites occur when people try to capture or kill a snake.

“Snakes have been

known to bite animals, such as dogs, if they feel threatened.

“If your dog or cat encounters a snake, the best course of action is to remove your pet from the area or tie it up while the snake passes and if you suspect your pet has been bitten take it to a vet immediately.

“Snakes are generally very shy and prefer to keep away from people and often when a snake is found in a backyard it’s because it’s moving through the area to other habitat.

“Snakes are more common around the urban fringe or in rural parts of Victoria, but they can also be found close to cities and towns, particularly around watercourses and parkland.

“Whether you’re exercising outdoors or gardening, please be aware that snakes may be around, and make

sure you’re informed about how to react to them if you encounter one.”

If you live in an area with snakes, please remember: • when left alone, snakes present little or no danger to people; • if you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area; • don’t attempt to capture or harm snakes, instead call DELWP on 136 186 for further advice; • maintain lawns and clean up around your house, as snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, and building materials; and • undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately.

PLAN AHEAD: Agriculture Victoria’s Biosecurity advice suggests creating a risk assessment and action plans as the first step to keeping your farm and livestock safe.

Each property is different and faces different challenges, so it is critical to assess the biosecurity risks that are most likely to impact your property.

Biosecurity risks can be broken down into the following broad categories: livestock, vehicles, equipment, people, and supplies.

The risk impact will change for livestock when they move onto, around, or off your property.

As part of developing a biosecurity management plan, an important step is to conduct a

risk assessment and develop an action plan.

A risk assessment is simply the process of identifying a hazard, the consequences of this hazard, and the probability this hazard will happen.

When undertaking the risk assessment, try to determine: • how severe the risk is; • whether any existing control measures are effective; • what action you can take to control the risk; and • how urgently action needs to be taken.

This allows you to target and apply your resources to areas which are likely to achieve the

best result.

The next thing to do is create an action plan.

This converts the risks identified in the risk assessment and outlines the actions you intend to implement on farm to prevent or reduce impacts to your property.

The actions you enact on your property need to be specific and set out how you are going to manage the risk.

They need to be practical and achievable with your resources and budget.

They also need to relevant to what you produce and how you manage your property.

For example, during your risk

assessment, you might determine that visitors could introduce a new disease, pest or weed via their footwear.

To manage this risk the action plan may include setting up a boot washing station and purchasing plastic tubs, scrubbing brushes, and some recommended disinfectant.

Alternatively, your action might be to purchase boots or gumboots in common sizes for visitors to use around the farm.

Both are effective measures to reduce the risk of pests or disease being transferred via mud or dung on footwear from property to property.

FARM biosecurity planning is not a onesize-fits-all process.

Every farm is different with each facing a unique set of challenges and risks and business owners having different levels of tolerance of those risks.

After conducting a risk assessment and action plan, the next step is to create a farm biosecurity plan.

A farm biosecurity plan is a practical way of showing how you are preventing the introduction of pests, disease, weeds and contaminants to your property, spreading around your property, or spreading from your property.

A farm biosecurity plan should: • define your responsibilities; • outline the disease protocols used on your property; • ensure property information and biosecurity measures are quickly accessible; and • enable you to easily communicate your biosecurity procedures to others.

To assist you in developing a farm biosecurity plan, several organisations have developed templates, ranging from industryspecific to more general.

Whichever template or tool you use, remember to tailor and adapt it to your individual situation and to your specific biosecurity risks.

Industry peak bodies are often a good resource for accessing biosecurity planning information.

A farm biosecurity plan is a tool to help you identify the risks on your farm and document how you will manage them.

The early 1980’s AS part of the lead up to the newspaper’s 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette will continue to feature historical articles, photos, advertisements and more.

This week looks back at the biggest stories from the early 1980s.

The decade begun with celebrations, as the Shire of Euroa held a special meeting on January 14, 1980 to

commemorate 100 years since its formation.

After forming during a meeting at the North Eastern Hotel, the Shire of Euroa would continue until November 18, 1994 when it merged with the shires of Goulburn and Violet Town to become the Strathbogie Shire.

The rest of the decade saw significant

infrastructure improvements in the region, with the widening of the Hume Highway proposed in 1981, the creation of a lawn cemetery for Violet Town in 1981 and nursing home developments in Violet Town, Nagambie and Longwood in 1982.

More developments were big news stories in the early parts of the decade, with the N.R Ralston Centre opening

at the Euroa showgrounds in 1980, a filtration plant suggested for Euroa in February of the same year and the first toilet blocks being built for Seven Creeks Park that same year.

A proposal to reticulate natural gas throughout sections of Euroa was also introduced in 1980 following several petitions from the community.

The book should be at the Information Centre until Friday, September 23.

Then I will send it off to Buckingham Palace for King Charles III and his family to know we are thinking of them at this sad time.

The Buckley Park Splash park structures are taking shape.

The old chemist shop is being converted into a cake and confectionary shop.

The old Doll’s House building at Nagambie Primary School has been demolished and the renovations under the massive Victorian Government school rebuild project has begun in earnest.

Travellers by rail from and to Nagambie Station can see the new platform and upgrade that has been done there to support the new Vlocity trains in the future.

New building plans are underway for the old Foxhole restaurant and adjoining land.

The Mechanics Institute has a new glass and wooden door front door and just outside of that a new decorative wooden front door.

Choose the location of the Nagambie Electric Vehicle Charging Station STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is seeking community input on three possible locations for an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station in Nagambie.

The locations have all been determined as suitable options and council would like the community’s input to make the final decision.

The project comes after car charging station company Evie Networks put in an application, supported by council, for Destination Charging Across Victoria (DCAV) Program to place one 50kw EV charger in Nagambie.

Strathbogie Shire Council

Mayor Laura Binks said the local communities were passionate about reducing the risks of climate change and caring for the natural environment.

“That is why we are installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Nagambie,” Cr Binks said.

“As more and more people switch to electric vehicles, we know it is important for both residents and visitors to the area alike.

“Business operators are set to benefit from the new charging station as there will be more electrical vehicle commuters

coming to the area.”

Aside from significant tourism and economic benefits, the EV Charging Station is also expected to contribute to an enormous number of environmental benefits.

“It will mean the Nagambie community is contributing to achieving Net Zero Emissions,” Cr Binks said.

“The stations are powered by 100 per cent renewable energy meaning they will be sustainable into the future as the cost of living and petrol prices increase.

“The stations will be able to

service over 90 per cent of the EV market with CCS2 and Chademo charging ports.

“Three location options have been determined for the charging station and one will be selected as the final location.

“We are calling on the Nagambie community to share their thoughts on their preferred location.”

Show is shifting FOLLOWING discussion between the Strathbogie Shire Council and the Australian National Show and Shine committee members, a decision has been made to shift some main sections of the event from the Seven Creeks Park to the streets of Euroa on Sunday, October 2.

Recent wet weather, together with the possibility of ongoing rain over coming days has made the parks unsuitable for vehicles and spectators.

Details of which of the Sevens Creeks Park areas will be affected are still to be finalised.

All appropriate motoring clubs and groups, including vendors and display proprietors will be advised over the coming week.

It is likely that the Kirkland Avenue displays including Lions club stalls

and motor cycles will not be affected.

Similarly, Area 5 (Bowling Green area) may not be involved.

Australian National Show and Shine President Ross Holt said that although the shift would present a lot of re-planning and work for all involved, it was certainly preferable to cancelling the event.

“We did this once before in 2016, and it worked out OK,” Mr Holt said.

“At that time, we had less time to plan just how it would work.

“Most people enjoyed the alternative of the streets, and the Binney Street traders had a bonanza.”

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks discussed the change of venue for the widely attended event.

“Council acknowledges the change of venue for

this year’s Australian National Show and Shine in Euroa due to the wet conditions in the park,” Cr Binks said.

“Moving this to the streets is the sensible alternative and we’re working with the event organiser to ensure a successful and safe Euroa Show and Shine.

“The annual event draws huge visitor numbers and we are proud to be able to show off the Strathbogie Shire.

“It has been previously demonstrated that the event can be just as successful when it is held in Euroa’s streets.”

CHANGE OF VENUE: The Euroa Show and Shine will move to Euroa’s streets instead of the Seven Creeks Park due to wet conditions.

THE Labor Party have confirmed their candidate for the Euroa electorate, announcing that local schoolteacher Angela Tough will contest the Nationals-held seat in the November election.

Ms Tough, from Strathbogie, has been a teacher for 20 years and currently teaches at the Euroa Secondary College.

“I’ve been a teacher for 20 years, with English teaching being my major focus,” she said.

“I also have two little ones myself, a son and daughter aged nine and six who go to school locally.

“My husband is a farmer and works full time on the family farm.

“We’re a politically engaged family and we are constantly watching the news.

Having previously been an active member of Labor branches in Melbourne, Ms Tough feels the time is right to get back into the political arena.

“I was active in the Labor branches when I used to live in Melbourne,” she said.

“I helped work on campaigns many years ago.

“It got tougher to keep that up while living here, even branch meetings

were hard to get to.

“But I live and breathe politics; it’s an important part of my life.

“I’m not afraid to stand up for issues and never have been.”

Ms Tough spoke about motivated her to get involved ahead of this election, and discussed the impact of other politicians in the region.

“I really got the passion back after listening to Cathy McGowan and the Voices for Indi,” she said.

“I was following that closely and could see that have an impact on our life.

“We were very remote and couldn’t get reception while there were bushfires happening.

“Cathy McGowan led the campaign to get phone towers in, and we were in one of the areas to receive them.

“It changed our life and I was able to see how someone could effect change as a politician.”

Ms Tough began finding ways to involve herself in the political sphere, even contesting the Indi preselection against Helen Haines ahead of the 2019 Federal Election.

Protection monitor would put child safety first DERRYN Hinch’s Justice Party MP Tania Maxwell has expressed alarm at flaws in Victoria’s Working With Children Check and National Police Check systems exposed by Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass.

Ms Maxwell said Ms Glass found the screening authority’s powers to be among the most limited in Australia.

Her comments follow revelations that a former youth worker was able to gain unauthorised access to information about children in protection long after he left a job with Melbourne City Mission.

“A run of serious child protection concerns raised about the offender and apprehended violence orders in place against him were not included when these checks were carried out because he’d not been charged with any crime,” Ms Maxwell said.

“It seems extraordinary that such serious flags were ignored and the perpetrator was able to obtain protected information.

“Sex offenders are opportunistic, and this is why Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party persistently advocates for stringent protections that put the safety of children first.

“It’s clear from the Ombudsman’s investigation of these appalling breaches that a national approach is needed and I have written to the Attorney-General about the changes we’d expect.

“It’s also shocking that Victoria’s child protection system failed to provide continuity of support for the child victim targeted and later assaulted by the offender.

“The victim’s family and advocate felt that services dropped off due to funding limitations or staff turnover, and that a lack of continuity in support had hampered his recovery as a survivor of sexual assault.

“It should alarm everyone that report after report shows that child protection continues to fail our children.

“For this reason I called on the government on August 17 to appoint an independent monitor to oversee the child protection governance in the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and get its operations back on track.

“Given the Ombudsman’s report, waiting’s not an option.”

FISHING FUN: Local lakes have been stocked with thousands of rainbow trout as part of a State Government initiative, providing a fun school holiday activity for kids.

More holiday fishing fun for the family with 8000 catchable size rainbow trout released FAMILIES across North East Victoria can look forward to fishing these school holidays with the State Labor Government stocking 8000 catchable size rainbow trout into 14 lakes across the region.

The stockings, from Marysville and up to Wodonga, are part of almost 35,000 fish going into more than 70 lakes across the state.

“By stocking waterways across the region, we are giving locals and visitors the best opportunity to catch a fish over the school holidays,” Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.

“What better way to spend the school holidays than with family and friends by the water - and we are giving everyone a

better chance at getting the catch of the day.”

The state-wide fish stocking blitz is funded by recreational fishing licence fees and the State Government’s $35 million Go Fishing Victoria plan to get more people fishing, more often.

The family-friendly waterways provide the perfect opportunity for those new to fishing to give it a go as most feature fishing platforms, bankside tracks and picnic areas, which create safe and convenient access for families.

Rainbow trout are perfect for kids and newcomers to the pastime because they are easy to catch and take a range of bait such as worms and Powerbait,

and lures too.

The trout were grown by the Victorian Fisheries Authority at its Snobs Creek hatchery, which played a huge part in stocking a record-breaking 10 million fish last season including nearly two million trout and salmon.

Nearby stocked waters in the North East for the September school holidays include the Arboretum Dam (300 fish) and the Longwood Golf Course Dam (300 fish).

A daily bag limit of five trout applies to Family Fishing Lakes, of which only two trout can exceed 35cm.

GMW urges boaters to put safety first WITH school holidays and a long weekend approaching, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is reminding people visiting its lakes, dams, and reservoirs to be safe on the water.

GMW is anticipating high visitation numbers over the coming weeks, with most of its storages at healthy levels due to the recent rainfall.

GMW Water Storage Services general manager Martina Cusack asked for all prospective visitors to make safety their priority.

“We want everyone to have fun, but most of all we want everyone to return home safely,” she said.

“The rainfall we have experienced recently means there are high flows heading into many of our storages. This can create strong currents, high debris loads and changes in the river and sand bars, which boat operators need to be

prepared for.

“Boat operators should always wear personal flotation devices and maintain a lookout for hazards and other users at all times.

“Conditions can change quickly, so stay up-to-date with weather reports when heading out.”

GMW has temporarily closed Laanecoorie Reservoir and Hepburns Lagoon to boating due to the increased risk to recreational boaters.

Visitors can plan ahead and check for public notices like the ones at Laanecoorie Reservoir and Hepburns Lagoon by visiting GMW’s Water Storages page on its website https://www.gmwater.com.au/waterresources/catchments/ storages.

KDFNL grand finals entertain FOOTBALL UNDER 18 ON Saturday, September 17 Lancaster under 18 footballers took on Nagambie under 18 footballers.

In a clash of class and an exhibition of young talent, Nagambie defeated Lancaster to come home as 2022 Under 18 KDFNL premiers, beating their rivals 54-34.

RESERVES Mooroopna Reserve was alive on Saturday, September 17, as Avenel reserves prepared to take on Lancaster.

Lancaster made light work of Avenel, coming home with the 2022 Reserve KDFNL premiership with a final score of 71-27.

SENIORS In perhaps what was the most tumultuous grand final match up seen in a long time, Lancaster seniors took on Murchison-Toolamba. The match was not without its

The under 17 netball grand final was a showdown between Merrigum and Tallygaroopna, both sides with much to prove.

After four quarters of back and forth, Merrigum were

able to take home the title, beating Tallygaroopna 47-43.

C GRADE IN an admirably close shave, Tallygaroopna took on Mooroopna for the 2022 KDFNL C grade premiership,

taking it home by only one goal’s difference, 35-34.

B GRADE THE B grade premiership match was an admirable showdown between two enthusiastic and successful sides who showed their skill throughout the home and away season. In the end, Merrigum defeated Tallygaroopna 41-32 and took home the title.

A GRADE THE match all were waiting for, the A grade exhibition, a show of excellence, determination and talent. Tallygaroopna took on Dookie United at Mooroopna Reserve, court one. The air was thick, the court was wet and the players were raring and ready to go.

In a give and take game right down to the last quarter, Tallygaroopna managed to do one better than Dookie United and took home the premiership flag for the 2022 season.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB NICE Spring weather early in the week allowed the mowers on the course and enticed 16 men and 11 ladies to enthusiastically and optimistically take on the Wednesday competitions.

Most found the heavy condition tough going.

In the men only Bill Wright and Gary Ritchie both on 34 points were the only reasonable scores.

Only three players managed 30 points or more and some could only manage low 20’s or less.

Dick Farmer and Charlie Walker took home the nearest the pins In the ladies 11 players competed in the second round of the Dot Role trophy, Deb Cox was the winner on net 80 from Pam Sprent 82.

Nearest the Pins went to Dot Rule, Gay Mitchell and Freda Edwards while Gail Allen and Deb Cox claimed the Drive & Pitch’s.

Disappointingly rain kicked in again late in the week making the course unplayable again for the weekend.

Hopefully some better weather this week for both the Wednesday comp and the Friday AFL Holiday mixed modified Stabbford Aggregate Event.

Saturday competition can be played early before the Cats V Swans AFL grand final.

The following week sees the Spring Tournament with a mixed Pineshurst on Friday 30 September, sponsored by Euroa Pharmacy.

Saturday, October 1 is 4BBB per sponsored by Burton IGA with fields at both 8-9am and 11.30-12noon.

Sunday will bring out the big guns for the 27 hole stroke and handicap in the three grades, sponsored by Ford McKernan Engineering, including the HJ Goldsworthy 18 hole handicap.

There were 10 players playing a round of Stableford in fairly nice conditions.

It was also a round for the Monthly Medal and the Social Club Competition.

The winner of A and B Grades and the Monthly Medal was Moz Fowler with 28pts.

The C Grade winner was Kylie Carmichael with 24 pts.

The 9 hole winner was also Moz with 16pts.

N/P on the third was Kylie.

18 hole balls down the line went to Moz 28 pts and Ky.ie 24 pts.

9 hole balls down the line went to Moz 16 pts and Kylie 15 pts.

There was no Chicken Run played on Thursday 15th, due to weather conditions.

MEN

THE Nagambie golf club’s Goulburn Cup was postponed due to heavy ground conditions and poor weather forecast, the Goulburn Cup has been rescheduled to be played on the Sunday 23rd of October.

No golf was played with the course being closed until Wednesday, September 21.

Next week’s golf will be a Par event with L. Hall on office duty and T. Baldwin in the bar.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB AT last, we were finally able to hold a ladies tournament in the form of the Mabel Vearing Silver Salver.

All week it was looking as though we’d be rained out, but thankfully the weather held.

Thirty-six players tees off in windy/misty conditions, playing a stableford round.

It was a close battle for the Salver honours, with the number two Yea team of Karen Sangster, Di Elliot and

Jan Wealands, claiming the win with a combined score of 94 points, just one point ahead of Marysville.

Grade winners were A grade - Gail Leigh (Marysville) with 35 points, B grade Irene Keogh (Nagambie) 34 points in a count back from Robin Lied (Euroa) and Jillian Chandler (Marysville) and C grade went to Helen Cashmore (Trentham) 29 points.

Small teams went to the Marysville combination of Gail Leigh, Jillian Chandler and Heather Jenkins with 102 points - pity that wasn’t their Salver team.

Gail also collected the Vets prize and Heather won the Straightest drive - I believe it was right on the tape.

Only two of the four NTP prizes were claimed with Kathy Keating (Trentham) and Adrianne Anglin (Yea) winning the 14th and 18th respectively.

A big thank you to all who have worked on the course - it held up extremely well and was just a shame we didn’t have a nice sunny day to play.

Of course, thank you to our ladies for once again providing delicious cakes and slices for our visitors and to Kait Carracher for giving up her day off to help us out.

Special mention to Marlene Hull who toiled tirelessly all day, firstly helping with the “office duties”, then managing the kitchen then back to help with the results.

A job well done.

We had 13 brave junior golfers on Saturday morning, in what can only be described as arctic conditions, for the first round of the junior six hole club championships.

Lachy O’Brien has taken an early lead shooting 31 and winning the day’s scratch event.

Ned Butler and Owen Smith were five shots back, with Ned

beating Owen in a countback.

Archie Butler is just one shot further back after the first round.

The Handicap comp was won by Abby Eagles with an excellent 22 net.

Kevin Traynor came in second after capturing his first par and he won the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza voucher.

The ever-consistent Bob Taylor-White came in third.

We will be taking a couple of weeks off over the school holidays but back for the final three rounds of play after that.

Would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Avenel junior golfers who competed in the primary school division golf tournament in Mooroopna last week.

Of the 15 players who competed, 11 were from Avenel and of the seven going to the regional event in Wangaratta, five are from Avenel.

Really proud of the way they acquitted themselves and looking we forward to hearing how they fare at the next level.

As it’s the AFL grand final this Saturday, no formal comp has been organised, however, if there’s enough interest we will arrange something.

Mansfield Clay Target Club puts on back to back competition THE Mansfield Clay Target Club afternoon and night shoot was held on Saturday in calm drizzly conditions.

The evening attracted a field of 49 shooters making up ten squads from all over including New South Wales CTC, Cloncurry Queensland and local club representatives from Boarder CTC, Alexandra, Yarrawonga, Numurkah, Shepparton, Corowa, Frankston, Woods Point, Melbourne and MCC. Everyone stayed overnight in Mansfield and reattended the day shoot the following morning.

The events were generously sponsored by Angus Cameron (Ballistic and Mechanical Testing), Greg Coleman (Ridge Line Clothing), Paul Keedle (Mt Buller Towing), Terry Preston (SJS Trading) and the Kirley family (Mansfield Hunting and Fishing).

Saturday kicked off at 3pm with the Ballistic and Mechanical Testing 30 tar-

get Ball trap, 15 targets per ground.

Bill Preston was the overall and B grade winner hitting 29 targets. Others included AA grade Phillip Matthews 28, Greg Coleman 27; A grade Terry Preston 28, Ian Cameron 26; B grade Lewis Chapman 24.

C grade required a shootoff between Adam Maltman 28/34 and Jason Foster 27/34.

A hearty meal catered for

by Angus and his daughters Sarah and Silvia filled the gap between events while we waited for sunset.

Smoked cranskies, pork snags and accompaniments supplied by Alpine Butchers were delicious.

A fill-in novelty event was well supported with all shooters standing at 25 meters, on lane four, with a miss and out, until one remained.

Fred Heinze took the cash.

At 6.30pm it was dark enough to shoot under lights

so it was into the 60 target medley 20 double, 20 single and 20 point score, for maximum total score of 100.

Greg Coleman and Phillip Matthews came home with 95, after a shoot-off requiring five of each targets they remained undecided with both on 23/25, in the spirit of the competition they shook hands and split the prize AA and Overall prizes.

A grade went to Shane Wheeler on 92 and Marty McLachlan 91. B grade Bill Preston 88 and John Winters 83.

C grade Nevenka Muller 72 and Adam Multman 72.

The night ran smoothly and rounded up at 10.15pm.

On Sunday we woke to an overcast day with intermittent showers throughout.

Event three kicked off at 10.30am with the Ridge Line 30 target single barrel championship.

Daryl Hunt, Ian Cooksey and Bob Glossip participated in a shoot-off for overall

after hitting 29. Daryl was victorious 34/35.

Ian won A grade 33/35 over Bob 29/31. AA grade second was Angus Cameron 34/37. B grade David Luelf 29/33 and Lawrence Apps 28/33.

C grade Jarryd Bringham 24/30 and Tom McGrath 22/33.

The next event was Mt Buller Towing 30 target Point Score.

Angus Cameron blitzed the field hitting 89 out of a possible 90.

Junior shooter Cameron Ford took AA second with 86/90.

Another junior shooter, Ben De Pedro took A grade 86 over Alan Kidd 88.

B grade David Luelf 84 and Lawrence Apps 82.

C grade Stephen Wilson 79 and Adam Maltman 78.

Rounding out the two days was event five, the Ballistic and Mechanical Testing Handicap.

Carson Weingott was the

only shooter hitting 29 and taking home the $500 first prize.

The next three shooters battled it out for minor placings, the results being Greg Coleman second, Marty McLachlan third and Geoff Foster fourth.

Fifth place was a five way tie on 27with Adam Maltman victorious.

The two day five event tournament high gun was split by Greg Coleman and Phillip Matthews 261/280.

A grade Terry Preston 248/280, B grade Bill Preston 246/280, C grade Adam Maltman 218/280.

Junior high gun Ben De Pedro 239/280.

Ladies high gun Jo-Anne Ford 215/280 and veteran high gun Bill Forrest 239/280.

Special thanks to attending shooters and family members who participated with scoring and generally helping out to ensure a successful day.

Co-ordinating the shoot and results Marty and John ran the office, and everyone chipped in and delivered a well ran back to back program.

Avenel opens season with a bang AVENEL BOWLS CLUB ON Sunday September 11, Avenel Bowls Club held its opening day to officially celebrate the upcoming 2022/23 GVPA bowls season.

by Spud Furletti. Spud and Jenny are lifetime members of Avenel Bowls Club and have volunteered many hun-

dreds of hours of work over dozens of years to ensure the success of the club. They continue to work hard for the benefit of the club and are held in high regard by all members.

Last Tuesday Avenel and Kilmore bowlers enjoyed a full-scale practice match at Seymour. Seymour was the successful team for the day, but the day provided some much needed match practice for all bowlers.

Thank you to Seymour Bowls Club for putting on the day and welcoming all bowlers so warmly.

On Saturday, October 1 there will be a practice

match against Nagambie at Avenel starting at 12.30pm and followed by afternoon tea.

Please wear uniform.

Shepparton Park are hosting Avenel and Euroa to a practice match on Saturday, October 8. A BBQ lunch will be served at noon followed by a game of bowls.

This is also a uniform event.

Please add your name to the list on the noticeboard if you wish to attend either or both of these matches.

The first Mystery Tea for the new season will be held on Thursday 22 September from 6pm. This will be

a good chance to welcome new bowlers and to socialise with old friends before the pennant season starts.

To assist with catering, please add your name to the list on the noticeboard.

The first round of midweek pennant is on Tuesday 27 September and weekend pennant first round is on Saturday, October 15.

Winter tennis competition closes in finals showdown

By DEB MIMS WITH Benalla and Mansfield Black finishing first and third place, respectively on the Euroa & District Ladies Winter Assoc (EDLWTA) ladder, giving their all in the semi-finals held at Mansfield’s courts, it was Terip Terip and Euroa who were going to battle it out in the grand final on the hallowed courts of Euroa.

Long-time rivals and with fourth placed Euroa knocking off the top of the ladder, Benalla, this was going to be an interesting day.

Cindy Hayes led her merry ladies, Frances Lawrence, Bec Lyttle and Phoebe McDermid, out onto the court to fight it out against Chris Ellis, Sue Vaughan, Lyndall Bigland and Rowena Ellis.

Hayes and Lawrence took to the court against Chris Ellis and Vaughan, whilst next door, Lyttle and McDermid were up against Bigland and Rowena Ellis.

Chris and Sue came out of the blocks firing, and raced to a five - one lead, leaving Cindy and Frances wondering what to do.

Slowly, slowly the Terip team found their rhythm and clawed back to take the set out eight - five.

Bec and Phoebe were not going to let Lyndall and Rowena get the jump on them and took their set eight - four.

RUNNERS UP EUROA: Mary Dewis, Chris Ellis, Lyn Pierce, Rowena Ellis, Lyndall Bigland and Sue Vaughan.

PREMIERS TERIP TERIP: Cindy Hayes, Phoebe McDermid, Frances Lawrence, Jenny Martin, Bec Lyttle.

PHOTOS: Karyn Fraser Heading into the second round there was an even split with Terip and Euroa each taking a set, eight - three.

This meant Euroa was going to have to pull out all stops and take the last two sets in a convincing manner.

This was not the case, with Terip sealing the premiership with an eight - three and eight - six final round.

Final score Terip Terip five sets 43 games to Euroa one set 29 games.

Despite the score line appearing one sided, this was not the case.

There were many great rallies, and plenty of ‘oohs and aahs’, followed by clapping from the spectators.

The weather was kind to the players, although the spectators huddled together when the sun hid behind the clouds.

Rain threatened toward the end but fortunately didn’t eventuate.

Once the physical side of the day was over, everyone retired to the club house for a spread fit for a king.

With the formalities out of the way, everyone went back to chatting before farewelling, with the comment of “see you next season on the court”.

There was even talk of catching up before then, as everyone enjoys the social side of the com-

petition.

Bec from Terip commented that she looks forward to her winter Mondays and can’t wait until next season.

ON THE RUN: The Euroa seniors side were able to take Mansfield out of the competition in a show of skill and determination.

Magpies to challenge for flag GVFL FOOTBALL SENIORS EUROA THE Euroa senior football side has won through to the Goulburn Valley Football League grand final after accounting for rival Mansfield on Sunday.

In what was a very wet and windy start to the match the Euroa team burst from the blocks with midfield magicians Andrew Smith, Jack Hellier and Ben Giobbi winning plenty of the ball and sending it forward with regularity.

Jett Trotter began the game in the middle as well as Coach Rowan looked to catch Mansfield off-guard.

This worked a treat as forwards Erish Uthayakumar and Tristan Davies made short work of the Mansfield defenders. Ben Bath began the game brilliantly, marking the ball like it was a dryweather afternoon.

Speaking of weather, didn’t it take a turn for the worse.

With a huge storm cloud

above the ground a massive crack of lightning meant the umpires had no choice but to postpone the proceedings until it was same to return to the playing field.

This storm and the multiple lightning strikes meant the game was in recess for almost 30 minutes before play was able to resume.

Remarkable stuff indeed.

Euroa returned to the field with less than two minutes to quarter time and were able to jag a goal in that period of play - extending their lead to 19 points at the break.

The weather took an about face for the next two quarters as the clouds opened up, allowing the sun to shine through for small periods.

The ball though was still quite wet and hard to handle.

Despite this the Euroa team managed to compose themselves well when under relentless pressure from the Mansfield side.

SUPPORT PLUS: With the support of the club, players and spectators behind them it is no surprise Euroa felt confident running out on Sunday. ter, Tom and Dan Garside and Ben Harrison had their hands full but they were coping very well indeed.

pen at the long-break the Magpies headed out again under sunny skies knowing a solid third quarter may well set them up for a much-

anticipated crack at Echuca in the season decider.

The effort all over the ground was enormous Jayden Gleeson kept driving the ball out of the backline, cool heads on young shoulders of Jack Frewen and Jack McKernan were a delight to see with some forward magic from Nate Stewart and Jett Trotter finishing off these defensive efforts.

Euroa went into the last quarter with the better part of a four-goal lead.

This was to be the margin at the end of the game as the Magpies booted the first goal of the last quarter then withstood time and time again the forward thrusts of a desperate Mansfield unit.

Andrew Smith was magnificent throughout the game with Harrison Jarvie showing incredible speed and determination to win the ball.

All roads now lead to the grand final this coming Sunday at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton - 2:35pm start.

This is the first grand final appearance for the senior football team since 2005 with the club not having won a premiership in this grade since 1990.

The town, its businesses, people and the club supporters and members wish Coach Scott Rowan and his players the very best as they look to bring home a flag.

The side will train in Euroa this Thursday night with the club providing meals from 7:15pm onwards please get on down to watch the lads train, have a bite to eat and a cold drink and soak in the exciting opportunity that this week presents.
