– a term that has seen four councillors resign – after Minister Horne cited concerns about governance and conduct.

According to Cr Robin Weatherald, Mayor Laura Binks is set to respond by recommending to Minister Horne that all sitting councillors be suspended, herself included.

Cr Weatherald, who stressed his comments were not authorised or representative of the council’s views, said he strongly opposes the suspension of councillors.

He claims allegations directed at the council of poor governance and failing to uphold the code of conduct have been overblown and are without substance.

“The word ‘toxic’, often used, has been misused … it has no real foundation or substance, it’s a ‘state of mind’ issue,” he said.

Former councillor Reg Dickinson last month said he could “no longer work in a toxic environment” upon his resignation from council.

LONGWOOD LOOKOUT

By LONGWOOD ACTION GROUP OUR town is looking fabulous now with the streetscape plantings really a feature in the centre of town and the solar lights in the pub paddock offering a softened light walk through this space at night.

The native flower sculptures will soon be lit up with coloured lights to celebrate the festive season, too.

After meeting with the Longwood Action Group, Strathbogie Shire Council has now included Longwood in their regular garden maintenance, which certainly has made a difference to the workload of our group and the maintenance of the town centre streetscape.

The next meeting of the Longwood Action Group will take place at 7pm today, on Wednesday, November 8, at the community centre meeting room.

This meeting will also include our AGM and all positions are declared vacant.

Anyone is very welcome to attend, or just come along with any ideas that you may have for community projects.

The Longwood Seniors’ monthly twocourse luncheon is held on the first Monday of each month at 12.30pm at the community centre.

The cost is $16 and all seniors are welcome.

The Longwood Primary School transition program for 2024 foundation students will continue.

Sessions on November 14 and 21 will be half-day sessions and November 28 and December 5 will be full-day sessions leading up to the state-wide transition day on Tuesday, December 12.

Cr Weatherald said he is refusing to sign a statement recommending the suspension of councillors, which he claims other councillors have also been asked to sign.

He is now calling on Mayor Binks to hold a statutory meeting that could see a new mayor installed, after he claims the mayor declined “without good reason” his private request to call a statutory meeting to be held before November 10, when the council is due to respond to the minister.

Cr Binks was re-elected as mayor for a one-year term in November 2022, and a statutory meeting to elect a new mayor is normally held by the council in November.

Cr Weatherald said he was bringing this situation to light “as a matter of principle”.

“I cannot remain silent; my role will be to expose the weak human excuses for suspending a survivable council,” he said.

“My commitment to council [has been] to protect it from unelected administration.”

The Euroa Gazette understands the council recently received an arbitration report following an investigation of whether a former councillor behaved disrespectfully toward a senior council officer in an incident earlier this year.

Cr Weatherald has seen the report and said based on his own reading, he could see no evidence of serious misconduct, which he believes supports his view that allegations of councillor impropriety have been blown out of proportion.

PHOTO: Darren Chaitman “I’m just a very old man with a lot of experience in local government who is appalled that the reputation [of this shire] built over the last hundred odd years is just going to go straight down the gurgler,” he said.

“The impact will be catastrophic to the township of Euroa.

“The community deserves its governance – if there was substance in the issues, then I would not be game.

“I have the will and commitment to serve on, and cannot morally advise suspension of Strathbogie Shire elected councillors.”

Strathbogie Shire Council said it was unable to comment due to confidentiality.

The office of Minister Horne said the government will respond to the monitor’s report in due course.

AUSTRALIAN Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) Inland Rail has revealed its proposed design for Euroa’s railway station precinct and has called on the community to offer feedback.

New images and a “fly-through” YouTube video show significant changes proposed to Euroa Railway Station and its surrounding area, which include: • removing the Anderson Street bridge and building a road underpass to replace it; • removing and relocating the rail track, thereby opening up a new “station forecourt” to Railway Street; • building a new station platform and pedestrian underpass with lifts, ramps and stairs; adding paths to connect the station, town centre and nearby open spaces; and • providing car parking on both sides of the station; and removing the Euroa Goods Shed.

The images also depict two large detention basins, which on first glance resemble sporting ovals.

ARTC’s general manager of projects for Victoria and South Australia, Ed Walker, told The Euroa Gazette these basins are being proposed as a flooding prevention measure and would only be filled in more extreme flooding events.

“But we are seeking feedback from community around those and to see how we might be able to utilise those to integrate into the open spaces,” he said.

Mr Walker also dispelled any doubts about whether his organisation had firmly decided on the underpass to replace the Anderson Street Bridge, and said “we’re pleased to advise we will proceed with the vehicle underpass”.

“I thought there was a real opportunity for cooperation and collaboration, so we made a number of offers [to ARTC] to say, ‘look, we believe we can help you in working through this stuff at this stage’,” EuroaConnect member Jim Shovelton said.

“So, it’s disappointing that it wasn’t taken up, and then we’ve been given not a blank canvas with the proposal, but something that’s fairly definite and structured that we then have to work within.

“Rather than saying, ‘well, if we were starting from scratch, what would it look like?’

“So, we don’t know really how genuine this consultation is.”

Responding to these concerns, Mr Walker said the ARTC has been constrained in their design process as the majority of assets in the railway precinct are not owned by the ARTC. “They’re owned by Department

of Transport and Planning, VicTrack, and the Strathbogie Shire Council, and they’re also operated

by V/Line,” he said.

“So, we’ve had to work through an extensive consultation period with those agencies to ensure that we meet all their requirements, and then we’re able to then discuss them with the community.

“We are looking for input, not everything is set in stone, so to speak.

“Some things we do need to comply with, such as where the tracks are going to be located, the length of the platform and the width of the platform.

“The landscaping, the wayfinding, some of the different materials that we’re looking at can all be discussed with the community, but we’re very constrained in what we can build there because the assets are owned by parties other than ARTC.” EuroaConnect also continue to argue the 150-year-old Euroa Goods Shed should be saved from destruction, as they and other Euroa residents believe the shed

is an important part of the town’s heritage.

In August, the ARTC announced their intention to remove the shed due to the alignment of the railway track and an engineering report stating the structure is unsafe – points that are disputed by EuroaConnect members.

The shed is set to be demolished within three months following the advice of engineering firm Sterling.

Pilot dies in Goulburn Weir gyrocopter crash

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE pilot of a gyrocopter that crashed in Goulburn Weir on Sunday morning died at the scene and another man was been airlifted to hospital with upper body injuries.

The pilot was later identified as a 50-year-old man from South Australia and the passenger, in his 70s, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The passenger is believed to have waited over one and a half hours at the crash scene – a private property on Snipey Road in Goulburn Weir – before receiving medical assistance.

Acting Inspector Darron Huffer said police were informed at about 8am of the 7.15am crash and arrived at about 8.40am, while Ambulance Victoria arrived sometime later.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson was unable to confirm the arrival time.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday afternoon at the gate of Buffalo Chase farm on Snipey Road – about 1km from the scene – A/Inspector Huffer said family and friends of the affected individuals were still being notified.

Stressing an investigation of the incident was still in its early stages, he said police understood the take-off and flight had been local, but the cause of the crash was yet to be determined.

“It’s a tragic end to a Sunday morning – people just going about their leisure activities and unfortunately one of them won’t be returning home, and the other one’s still got a battle in front of him,” A/Inspector Huffer said.

“These kinds of scenes are always confronting.”

“I saw that chopper while I was watering, seemed to be fine but going very slowly,” she said.

Another commenter said she “used to watch him flying around Whroo”, while one more mentioned “I would see him flying around every so often”.

A/Inspector Huffer said he was not aware of risks associated with gyrocopters

– small helicopters powered by autorotation rather than engine.

“I’ve been a police officer in rural Victoria for some time and this is the first incident that I’ve had to attend of this nature,” he said.

Police units from Seymour, Wallan and Tatura attended the scene, along with SES and CFA units.

Police are urging witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers to assist with their investigation.

Victorian Minister for En-

vironment Steve Dimopoulos said the Container Deposit Scheme “will reduce the amount of litter in Victoria by up to half - contributing to a more sustainable future, while putting money back in the pockets of hardworking Victorians”.

“CDS Vic will maximise the number of cans, bottles and cartons being recycled into new products and keep them out of landfill,” he said.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland welcomed

the launch of the scheme, but criticised the State Government’s roll-out.

Shepparton woman dies in EuroaMansfield Road crash on Saturday The 18-year-old y is the second to die on accident-prone p road in less than four months

By DARREN CHAITMAN AN 18-year-old Shepparton woman has died in hospital after crashing a car into a tree on Euroa-Mansfield Road on Saturday.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the car, was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after emergency services were called to the scene near Euroa, just south of LongwoodMansfield Road, at about 4pm.

She is the second person to have died in a crash on Euroa-Mansfield Road in less than four months, where at least five non-fatal crashes known to Gooram CFA have also occurred this year.

Gooram CFA captain Michael Stubbe described a confronting scene on Saturday.

“Where there’s a bend in the road, she’s gone straight ahead into a tree,” he said.

“It was a very serious accident.”

He said the driver had been heading north from Euroa and emergency services personnel spent “a

In addition to Gooram CFA, other emergency services units to attend scene included Euroa CFA, Euroa SES, Euroa and Seymour police units, and Ambulance Victoria.

A police spokesperson said the circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.

Mr Stubbe had previously spoken to The Euroa Gazette about the need to lower the speed limit on a stretch of

the road spanning from Ridge Road to the Gooram Falls carpark, where there have been several car crashes this year including a fatal crash in July.

However, Mr Stubbe said the crash on Saturday occurred on a different stretch

of the road, closer to Euroa.

“I think one of our problems is the very much increased traffic along this road, because it shows up as the preferred way to travel by Google Maps [and other GPS applications],” he said.

“People are almost coming out of their way to use the road because that’s what they are being recommended.

“Once we get a speed limit reduction on the top half [of the road], that will reduce.

“And as such, I think we’ll get less traffic, but more importantly, less first timers.”

Mr Stubbe was not aware of whether the Shepparton woman had used the road before, but he said that in the past, the drivers who crashed on the road were often from out of town and had never used the road before.

The CFA’s proposal to change the speed limit was supported by Strathbogie Shire Council, Ambulance Victoria and Euroa police, as well as politicians Wendy Lovell and Annabelle Cleeland.

Mr Stubbe said he has been told the speed limit will change, but he has not been given a timeframe.

Some 244 lives have been lost on Victoria’s roads this year, compared to 209 lives lost at this time last year.

Strathbogie Shire Council is proud to be the first local government area within the Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) region to have developed and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the TLaWC. We are proud to acknowledge the country that the shire spans and the first people whose sovereignty over these lands has never been ceded.

We will continue to do so regardless of the referendum outcome, we are committed to giving meaningful and reflective acknowledgements of country that celebrate the incredible history of Australia’s First Peoples and their connection to this land, as outlined in our MoU with the TLaWC. As non-Indigenous, we acknowledge country.

Indigenous Australians welcome us to country.

The MoU process was commenced by the previous council and was well underway when the current council was elected in November 2020.

The MoU was signed in October 2021 by council and TLaWC representatives, having been adopted unanimously by council at the October 2021 meeting.

As elected members we are responsible for the strategic direction of council and act as guardians of many strategies and policies that were created by past councils.

Once we have adopted a strategy or policy, it is the CEO’s responsibility to implement, and the incredible council officers

Let’s get on with closing the gap I APPLAUD Shirley Saywell for her thoughtful, heartfelt letter in last week’s The Euroa Gazette.

I share her anger, sadness and shame at the outcome of the Voice Referendum.

Last weekend a local person made the offhand remark in my presence that “it’s all over – just get on with it.”

Get on with what?

What he was actually saying is that the No side won and life now goes on as before.

Nothing changes.

He is so wrong.

It is not over and there is much left to do.

The Voice to Parliament is only the first part of the Uluru Statement from the Heart that Anthony Albanese vowed that he would implement as Prime Minister.

Truth-telling and treaty are the other components of the Uluru Statement from the Heart that now need to be implemented.

More than 15 years ago, six targets to close the gap in outcomes for indigenous and non-indigenous Australians – in such areas as health, education, employment

and justice – were identified.

We have failed to make any meaningful improvements in any of them – the gap is really a chasm.

This must still be addressed.

Truth-telling must also be given opportunities to be raised and heard, not the least through our education system.

Only by understanding and acknowledging the injustices of the past, and the intergenerational trauma that has resulted, can we finally be open to the idea of a having a treaty with our First Nations people.

Then maybe the healing can begin.

Yes – lots still to do, not business as usual.

Let’s get on with that.

Australia missed a chance to make things right THANK you for writing what you did Shirley Saywell (Letters to the editor, 1/11), you articulated what happened on October 14 perfectly.

I voted overseas and those I spoke to, both Australians voting and Europeans who were also interested to see what Australia would do, saw it as an obvious Yes. I too thought we were a nation who embraced change, looked forward and barracked for those who were doing it tough.

Were we too scared to state the obvious - that they were the First Peoples here?

Why, when we know that our attempts at “closing the gap” have failed, did we reject their suggestion of a Voice that could advise about their issues?

It just made so much sense.

I hope that we can find a way to support First Nations people who have been rejected and terribly hurt, to get through this.

We missed this chance to start to make things right, Australia who knows when we will have this opportunity again.

The group also endorsed a new governance model to have community champions including Yiiro Community Garden chair Irais Trejo.

In fact, my great-great-grandfather, English-born Dr Arthur Guyon Purchas, arrived in New Zealand in January 1845.

Dr AGP was a gifted man beyond medicine.

An inventor and architect, he also became an ordained Church of England priest.

He taught himself the Maori language using a Maori translation of St Matthew’s Gospel.

Since my early childhood, I have been enthralled and proud that the Maori held him in such regard that in the middle of a night two rowed a canoe to rouse him from his bed to ride out and quell a Maori tribal war southwest of Auckland.

Today’s Maori people in New Zealand are part of the everyday fabric of life, in all manner of pursuits.

Perhaps NZ’s smaller land mass allowed this; perhaps the vastness of Australia has held back the First Nations people here.

Later, in Australia, my late husband and I started a business in the Northern Territory and employed local Aboriginal people, all good, hardworking men.

Since then, with the assistance that has been showered for decades, I fear we have a “handout” culture – no thanks to distanced federal governments – and it’s a cycle that needs to be broken.

I believe the initiative to work for your dollar is ultimately the best kindness any person can be shown.

As for voting No, those declaring it “racism” to do so likely provoked profound backlash, and it’s disappointing that term is still bandied around.

COUNCILLOR-ELECT Shirley Saywell’s swearing in as a councillor has been delayed, as a cloud of uncertainty hangs over council’s future (see page 1).

Ms Saywell was named councillor-elect in August and originally planned to be sworn in as councillor in early October, when she returned from leave.

Last month, shortly after returning from leave, Ms Saywell told The Euroa Gazette she was seeking further advice before officially joining council.

The Euroa Gazette understands she has still not been sworn in.

Ms Saywell was invited by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to accept the role of councillor following the resignation of Kristy Hourigan in late July.

A CROWD of around 500 people flocked to Violet Town to join in with Halloween festivities recently.

Each year Violet Town hosts an event which brings crowds from as far away as Melbourne.

People of all ages dress-up in anything but normal attire in the hope of winning prizes or to be the scariest ghoul.

The organiser, 14-year-old Elliette Jeffery from Violet Town, started “Violet Town Halloween Parade” last year and could not believe the turnout this year.

Elliette has been the recipient of the Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year, Weary Dunlop Award and most recently was a state nominee finalist in the Keep Australia Beautiful “young legends”.

“Organising this event was so much fun,” Elliette said.

“The best part about it is that it appeals to all age groups, from the kids to the grandparents and so many people want to be a part of it.’’

Gary and Lou Abley, organisers of “Nightmare on Cowslip Street” from previous years, guided and supported Elliette through the process of arranging and coordinating this years event.

They could not believe the success of this year.

“It’s a credit to Elliette for what she has accomplished,” they said.

“It is such a great family event for Violet Town.”

The event was held at the Violet Town Football-Netball reserve where participants could happily parade around the oval with the chance to win prizes.

From here, maps were handed out with the addresses of the 35 local properties around Violet Town who had registered as a trick-or-treat destination for the children and families.

Not all homes were handing out treats though, with one giving sawdust as a trick.

In full community spirit, the CFA, SES and Victoria Police vehicles patrolled the streets as people went door to door to keep the sugar-happy children in line.

No incidents were reported, only complaints of sore jaws from chewing too many lollies.

As the sun set at the end of a perfect day, the crowd returned for a disco and dancing competitions before the night came to a happy end.

There are already plans for Halloween 2024 to be bigger and better with more trick-or treat locations, extra kids’ entertainment and fireworks all being on the cards.

Tough competition at annual garden showdown Gardens commended in Euroa’s “Over the Fence” competition

By DENISE HOLT THERE are so many lovely gardens in Euroa this spring, so the task of judging the annual “Over the Fence” competition was very difficult.

The two “out of town” judges really enjoyed their day looking at the way people of Euroa care for their gardens.

The new category, “community/business”, was especially varied and a challenge to award a winner.

The outstanding garden at Temple Restaurant in Clifton Street, belonging to the Murphy family, was the winner, and the runner-up was the Euroa Caravan Park.

The lovely surrounds of the Baptist Church were also commented on.

There were three other categories in the competition.

The winner for a large garden was Mary Dewis in Platt Street.

The judges were struck by the variety of plants and the pretty design of this garden.

The lovely garden of Edna Hemming in Parker Street was the runner-up in this section.

Both these gardens are very attractive and show the skill and knowledge of their owners.

The small garden winner was Beth Williams in Graham Street.

This garden is a riot of colour and scent with a huge variety of roses.

The runner-up in this section was a complete contrast as it is a native garden with many bird and insect attracting plants.

Chris and Garth Mitchell in Templeton Street are the owners and gardeners of this interesting

garden.

The new garden prize was awarded to Sharon and Stephen Saville, whose garden is on the corner of Tarcome and Parker streets.

The runner-up in this category was Ann-Maree and Bernard Lamaro’s garden in Mernda Avenue.

These gardens are in their early stages but demonstrate the passion and creativity of their owners; the judges were impressed with their planning and choice of plants.

The winners were awarded a small prize and have a sign outside their fence for the next few weeks, so passersby can admire them.

This competition draws attention to the lovely gardens in Euroa and the joy of gardening.

“We hadn’t been able to have a Head of the Goulburn Regatta since 2019, what with COVID, and then the floods,” she said.

“I think all the rowers were really happy to get back up here for this carnival style fun event again, even if in different format.”

Halloween enjoyed at haunted hall in Nagambie Community House gets spooky with wizards, ghosts, skeletons,, spiders and more p

By DIANE GRANT IMAGINE a large haunted house with a pathway of gravestones, leading into a large hall and spooky chamber-room complete with witches and wizards, ghosts, skeletons, spiders and their webs, and other creepy crawly creatures.

It was estimated that close to 200 passed through the Nagambie Halloween archway, past the gravestones, and entered through the doors of fear into the scary precincts of the haunted hall.

Inside, the scene showcased spooky characters hanging around from walls and doors; ghastly creatures hiding in the dark.

It was easy to imagine what the Nagambie Lakes Community House was trying to achieve at their Halloween party at the Nagambie Mechanics Hall on Tuesday last week.

A night created for local children to experience and remember.

friends, wearing a wide variety of masks and hats, along with colourful gear, were dressed as screen heroes, fairies, witches, ghosts, animals, and creative figures.

They joined the house hosts who also were decked out in saintly garb or ghoulish black garments as well.

In the supper room of the hall was a converted chamber of horrors, with spooky motifs decorating walls along a blackened pathway that featured images of witches, werewolves, vampires and ghosts on screens around the route.

Next door in the major hall a junior style blue light disco was taking place with many costumed children dancing to the wild music, under strobe lighting.

Games on side tables amused some of the Halloween families that attended but the main treat for the children was the trick or treat loot bags or small pumpkin bucketfuls they received as they completed their scary trip down the cemetery trail as they left the haunted house.

By BERNIE WALKER THE Wayback Wednesday column published in the October 25 edition of The Euroa Gazette mentioned the announcement 50 years ago of a “revolutionary shearing event” to take place at the Euroa Show featuring four past champion shearers.

Euroa Apex Club was running the shearing competitions at Euroa Show and Brian Morrison suggested an invitation Masters type competition be held, which was called the Forlonge Invitation Championship.

The four competitors invited to compete were John Hutchinson, from Victor Harbor in South Australia, John Harris (Euroa), Jim Walker (Avenel) and Dick Duggan (Longwood).

It is interesting to note all four are still alive.

The competition was run under Open time, for the first time in Australia.

Under this system the first shearer to finish set the time for the event, while the other competitors were penalised for the extra time they took.

The old system saw the shearers shear to a time set by the judges.

But it was a close-run thing as to whether the Forlonge could be held with approval only being granted on October 15.

There was also another

In a letter to Jim Heffernan, then president of the Victorian Farmers Union, I said: “The day we ran the first Forlonge Invitation we were beset with a statewide power strike”.

“I’ll never forget the look on

the faces of the crowd when the alternator motor stopped after seven sheep,” he said.

“But the shearers never missed a blow.

“They were on mains power, and even the State Electricity Commission smiled at disaster avoided.”

The SEC had supplied Apex with an alternator to provide for the needs of the shearing pavilion, otherwise the strike would have necessitated the cancellation of the events.

However, it never rains but it pours.

Very heavy overnight rain had fallen and Cr Norman Ralston, president of the A & P Society, had come to Apex early on show day and asked Apex what the situation was with the shearing as they were considering cancelling the show.

interest in the proposed Forlonge event.

The weather had cleared and they told him the sheep were dry and once the water had been swept off the shearing board and it was dry enough, the shearing could start.

Cr Ralston then said, “If the shearing is on, so is the show.”

Such was the interest in the event, on Monday morning the Melbourne “Sun” featured a double page report of the event.

Then the Apex club suggested I go to Golden Shears Masterton New Zealand the following year to learn as much as I could with the aim to run Golden Shears Australia in the Euroa Town Hall the following October.

This was done after much work and co-operation, and it changed shearing competitions in Australia forever.

It also led to Golden Shears World Council being formed in Euroa in 1980.

Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the first Trans-Tasman Shearing Tests which began in Euroa and still continue today as part of the National Championships and at the Golden Shears in New Zealand.

Victories and thrilling draws highlight recent bowls matches AVENEL BOWLS CLUB

By KATE DONOVAN Mid-Week Pennant Division three Round four- Avenel 14 – 91 defeated Numurkah 2 – 68.

Rusty Schwab, James Wall, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) were in a close tussle till the 21st end when they scored an eight.

Cashing in on the momentum, nothing was going to stop them from cruising home with an emphatic 34 – 24 win.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) combined in a great team effort winning sixteen ends and the game 31 – 15.

Noel Slater, Graham Lewis, Pam Pedder, Geoff Hateley (s) were down eleven shots late in the game but won four of the last five ends to go down by only three shots.

The next game is on November 14 at home against Nagambie.

Mid-Week Pennant Division six Round four - Avenel 12 - 34 defeated Mooroopna Blue 2 -32.

Norm Billingsley, Marg Harrison, Ruth Underwood, Graeme Toy (s) started well and finished even better.

They built on the two-shot lead at the break to win by eight shots, 19 – 11.

Mark Morse, Moiann Papageorgiou, Ron Harrison, Marion Gittus (s) put up a good fight but fell short by six shots, 15 – 21.

The next game for division six is away against Rushworth.

Weekend Pennant Division three Round three – Avenel 17 – 105 defeated Shepparton Golf 1 – 80.

Pam Pedder, Donna Rowley, James Wall, Jake Wall (s) had a twoshot lead at smoko.

In the second half they stamped their authority on the game winning 11 – 3 to bring home a solid win, 25 – 13.

After being behind, a five on the 13th end propelled Rusty Schwab, Graham Lewis, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) into the lead which they did not lose for the rest of the game.

A seven-shot win, 30 – 23 was reward for effort.

By LEANNE RUSSELL-JONES THIS year we have teams of 12 in both Midweek and Weekend Pennant, meaning we have some more new pennant player.

The Midweek team are fourth on the ladder with a good percentage but not so many points and face some tough matches ahead.

We travelled to Kyabram on Tuesday and had a big win on one rink covering the other two rinks, giving us the match points.

Weekend team is also fourth on the ladder, however the percentage is not so great, having had Shepp Golf forfeit to us on Saturday.

But I am really pleased with everyone’s efforts to date and am excited for the new bowlers this year.

We continue to be thankful to our Secretary, Margaret, regarding her grant sourcing.

From the Shire we received a grant recently and have purchased some wheelie walkers suitable for the bowling green, bowler’s arms and Bowlers Mates.

This is to enable some of our less steady or less able community members to come along and have a bowl and meet some new people.

Sunday afternoons from 2 pm sees us at the club, so do join us.

Thanks also to the Op Shop for their contribution toward new club uniforms for our new Pennant players.

Night one of the first 2024 Jack Attack competition is this Thursday, so please feel free to come on down.

We have a sausage sizzle, drumstick ice creams or zooper doopers, and our raffle.

The competition runs for five weeks.

Presently we are fund raising for a new Greens roller.

If anyone would like to contribute financially to this roller it would be appreciated.

Laurell enquired with Shepparton Bunnings about a spot on their BBQ, and we’ve been lucky enough to get their busiest day of the year, Boxing Day. I hope we can get enough volunteers to cover four slots to avoid helpers having to be there too long.

Euroa finds going tough against United EUROA B GRADE

PERFECT PLUG: Nic Hill got on top of the Shepparton United bowlers knocking up a masterful 53.

THE warmest weekend of the season so far saw Euroa take on Shepparton United.

Euroa were sent into the field to start the day and despite some solid bowling early, were unable to strike throughout the opening overs.

After breaking through in the 11th over, Euroa looked to be gaining momentum.

Despite some good moments, that included multiple wickets to Leo Murphy, Ben Jones and Mohammed Imran including his first wicket for Euroa.

Euroa were never able to stem the flow of runs.

This saw Shepparton United post an imposing 268 from their allotted 45 overs.

Knowing the task ahead of them, Euroa were keen to start strong.

However, this was not to be, as United struck in the first over and continued to bowl a tight line and length throughout the entire innings.

Despite strong efforts from Carl Norton (44) and Grayson Kirk (36), the consistent loss of wickets proved to be the downfall of Euroa once again.

All batsmen fought hard with the bat, however, Euroa were ultimately bowled out for 122 in the 39th over.

B grade now looks ahead to the return of two-day cricket, and will be keen to bounce back as they take on Kyabram in Euroa next round.

CRICKET STANDPIPE CUP SHEPPARTON Cricket Association’s Round 5 match between Euroa and Shepparton United will mark the introduction of the Cricket Standpipe Cup, celebrating the installation of Goulburn Valley Water’s Greening Euroa Standpipe. The initiative aims to provide recycled water to Euroa Cricket Club’s Friendlies Oval, with Strathbogie Shire Council advocating for government funding to support similar environmentally conscious projects in the area. The innovative standpipe, a first of its kind in Victoria, is designed to alleviate pressure on the town’s drinking water supply, exemplifying GVW’s commitment to securing sustainable water sources for regional communities.

The winning golfer, a player that has had a superb couple of months was Dave Fullager shooting a 89-20-69, the course conditions were once again in fantastic shape allowing not just our winner return a good score but most of the field.

Runner up also a recent winner and player in form was Bob McAdam missing out on count back McAdam shot a 94-25-69, finishing top three was the resurgent Shaun Spicer compiling a very nice 91-20-71.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Tim Baldwin on the 183 metres on the eighth and Rhys Shepherd knocking one up to the 13th.

Both right-handed batsmen, James Cornish proved to be the standout performer, showcasing his batting prowess with an outstanding contribution of 162 runs, while his father, John Cornish, anchored the innings with a steady 65 runs, underscoring the duo’s dynamic partnership on the field.

Reflecting on the 1988/89 season, James Cornish’s remarkable talent shone through as he clinched the

prestigious EDCA Maygar and The George Armstrong Memorial Ward, earning accolades for his exceptional all-round abilities and stellar batting performance.

Vineyards Running Festival celebration of scenery, running and community

By DAN GODSMARK THE picturesque grounds of Tahbilk and Mitchelton vineyards saw an impressive turnout of over 600 keen running participants for the annual Vineyards Running Festival. Nestled in the stunning vineyards of Nagambie, Victoria, the event showcased the beauty of the region as runners embarked on various challenging courses.

With a notable surge in participation this year compared to previous editions, the festival highlighted the growing enthusiasm for both running and community engagement.

The festival’s philosophy revolves around the belief that running is more than just physical exertion; it’s an immersive experience that connects individuals with nature and fosters camaraderie among fellow runners.

In line with this ethos, the event not only tested the participants’ physical limits but also provided a platform for celebration, featuring an array of culinary delights, exquisite wines, live music, and opportunities for families to bond.

Behind the scenes, the driving force of the Vineyards Running Festival is the Fit City Events company, led by the passionate organizer, Matt Morris.

Dedicated to creating innovative and inclusive events, the team aims to establish the Vineyards Running Festival as an annual tradition eagerly anticipated by runners far and wide.

Local representation from Euroa was notably strong, with a significant turnout for the challenging 42.2km marathon, albeit slightly extended due to a mapping error, now spanning 43.2 km.

James Bodycoat led the charge, conquering the mixed terrain in an impres-

sive 3 hours, 31 minutes, and 42 seconds.

Daniel Godsmark followed closely, completing the marathon in just under four hours at 3 hours, 58 minutes, and 8 seconds.

Tyson Thomson and William Hemming provided mutual support, crossing the finish line in 4 hours, 56 minutes, and 37 seconds, and 5 hours, 2 minutes, and 2 seconds, respectively.

Notably, Joey Vaz persevered through the grueling distance, finishing in 6 hours and 20 seconds.

Nagambie local, Charlie Carmichael, also left his mark, achieving an admirable time of 3 hours, 53 minutes, and 14 seconds.

In the women’s category, the half marathon showcased four remarkable individuals who displayed exceptional determination.

Bibby Simmonds celebrated her first marathon with a remarkable time of 1 hour, 58 minutes, and 59 seconds, while Alana Morrison achieved a sub-twohour finish, clocking in at 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 57 seconds.

Sally Hayes and Janes Houston put in tremendous effort, with Sally completing the half marathon in 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 35 seconds, and Jane finishing in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 42 seconds.

Lilly Godson, despite minimal preparation, pushed through to record a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 51 seconds.

In the fiercely competitive 10km race, the participants from Euroa and Nagambie showed exceptional speed and resilience.

Power couple Hannah Tuckett and Travis Huasler set a relentless pace, finishing the race in 56 minutes and 30 seconds and 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 13 seconds, respectively.

By DAN GODSMARK TWO students from Euroa Secondary School, Matilda Kubeil and Danny Williams, showcased their athletic prowess at the Lakeside Athletics Stadium in Albert Park, earning themselves a spot at the State Athletic Championships.

Their hard work and determination paid off as they successfully made it through the rigorous regional rounds, securing their place in the highly competitive state-level event. Held in Melbourne on October 18, the championships saw both students put on an

impressive performance.

Danny Williams exhibited remarkable stamina, clinching an admirable fifth position in the challenging 800 metres event with a time of 2:08.07.

Meanwhile, Matilda Kubeil displayed her true speed, securing the eighth position in the fiercely contested 100 metres race, clocking in at 14.47.

Their commendable achievements reflect the dedication and talent fostered within the Euroa Secondary School’s athletic program, setting a promising precedent for future aspiring athletes.

A grade fights valiantly but falls short of victory EUROA A GRADE CRICKET

By SCOTT HAMILTON EUROA A grade cricketers played host to Shepparton United CC for Round five of the Sherbourne Terrace Haisman Shield.

The magpies had a couple of changes to the line up from the previous week with Siva Velagala and Cohen Paul coming into the eleven.

Both teams were looking build on previous weeks with a win.

On a picturesque Saturday afternoon at Euroa Friendlies Oval, officials produced a great looking pitch with a beautiful outfield.

The pitch looked as though there would be plenty in it for both bat and ball.

Both teams agreed to start the game at 11am to accommodate a special event being held back at Shepparton United club rooms.

Euroa win the toss and elected to bat first.

Euroa pair Vaughan Kirk and Scott Hamilton opened the batting for the hosts.

Kirk and Hamilton got the hosts off to a solid start before the Euroa skipper was caught behind off the bowling of Shepparton United skipper Nash for 21.

Kirk was joined at the crease by Nick Hill.

The pair batted well, putting together a solid partnership before the next wicket fell.

In the 30th over, Cohen Paul joined Nic Hill at the crease.

The pair put together a strong partnership to help Euroa to their first competitive score of the year at 7/177.

Euroa opening bowlers Walter Jackson and Fletcher Paul bowled well to open the innings with Fletcher the pick of the bowlers early.

A strong opening partnership of 43 by Shepp United’s openers helped the visitors reach the drinks break on top.

After the drinks break, Siva Velagala and Cohen Paul bowled a super spell capturing a couple of wickets each.

A great battle between bat and ball ensued as both teams fought hard.

A very composed innings

by Shepparton United batter Rehan Bari stemmed the innings and Shepp United chased down the total with two wickets to spare.

Round 6 has the first 2-day game in years as Euroa travels to Kyabram in what will be a very competitive match.
