By DARREN CHAITMAN YOU may know Jeff Starkey as your former high school history teacher, or as one of the gang who gather daily at The Weekend Local café under the name “The Coffee Mafia”, or maybe as the bespectacled man at the dog park with the groodle

named Bosun.

But away from the café and dog park, the focus of the Euroa man for the last 12 years has been the writing of a painstakingly detailed narrative history of this region’s participation in World War One.

Earlier this month, Mr Starkey told The Euroa Gazette the news over a decade in the making: that the 422-page book, titled “The Longest Shadow”, was complete, and will be available for sale at a book launch on November 12.

The volume is the first to tell the stories of the 130 fallen men in Euroa’s Avenue of Honour, among others.

Many of these soldiers were relatives of families still in this region, the following of whom are

thanked in the book for assisting with the author’s research: Artridge, Beaton, Belcher, Bell, Burton, Breen, Brodie, Brook, Carne, Croxford, Dash, Fay, Fothergill, Gascoyne, Leckie, Liddell, Mackrell, Maxfield, McNicol, Moore,

Morgan, Newton, Palmer, Saxon, Stephenson, Tubb, Vidler, Wade, Wall, Wignall and Wiltshire.

It all began, Mr Starkey said, as a conversation with the late Bob Maidment, then president of the Euroa RSL, at a Christmas party many years ago.

Mr Maidment had known Mr Starkey since the high school teacher moved to Euroa in 1977, and understood his interest in history, which he had majored in at university along with economics and politics.

“All those names on the honour boards there, I don’t know who they are – can you find out who they are when you retire?” Mr Starkey recalls Mr Maidment asking.

“And I said, ‘no’.

“And he came back later and said, ‘well, if you can’t find out who those guys are, can you write a history?’

“Because, he said, ‘it needs to be told, it cuts deep here’.

“And then I said I could – and that’s what I did.”

The finished book, Mr Starkey said, covers what happened at home during the WWI period in what is now the Shire of Strathbogie (excluding Avenel and Nagambie), what happened to local soldiers during their time abroad, and life in the region in the decades before 1914.

“There’s so much about the narrative here, what happened back here, that doesn’t fit what people would think occurred,” he said.

An example is “the traditional story that men rushed to enlist”, which he found had not happened in this region.

He said after five months of war, by the end of January, only 80 had joined up.

The reason, Mr Starkey explained, was “quite straightforward – this area had been in drought for a very long time; farm incomes had been significantly reduced”.

“There are reports of groups of men, not going to war, but in fact, leaving to go shearing – and what they were doing was supplementing their incomes at home

In fact, Mr Starkey’s research found there was a bitter divide among townspeople and farmers, with the former accusing the latter of cowardice for their low enrolment rate.

A letter published in The Euroa Gazette at the time even accused the sons of farmers of “hiding behind their mother’s apron strings”.

Mr Starkey also said the recruiting officer in August 1914, Fred Tubb – who was later awarded a Victoria Cross – was “not out actively telling people to join up”.

The author described one occasion, on the date of a football match in Longwood between Violet Town and Gooram, when Mr Tubb addressed a group of men at the train station in Longwood, asking all those who planned to enlist the following day to line up on the station platform.

“The number came to 27,” Mr Starkey said.

“And Fred turned around and said, ‘now listen, if you’re going to go, I want you to think carefully about it because a number of you will get killed – and if you don’t get killed, you’ll come

back here badly wounded’.

“The next day, we don’t have 27 going, but in fact we have about 14.”

The author believes readers will also be surprised by more aspects of the history, such as the roles of local politicians including Albert Palmer and George Wale, the stories of the owners/ editors of The Euroa Advertiser and The Euroa Gazette (Theo Ford and Harriet Gilbert respectively) and this region’s role in the creation of the National Party.

In the book’s preface, Mr Starkey considers how rare it is for such stories to be uncovered, writing that “historical narratives tackling rural involvement in World War One are sadly missing from our bookshelves”.

“There are some 6500 catalogued references to World War One held in Australian libraries, yet you will struggle to find a regional study,” he continued.

Why, then, do regional studies deserve a place on the bookshelf, too?

“The answer to that is a fundamental one about history,” Mr Starkey said after a long pause.

“To get a better understanding of who you are today, you need to understand your past.”

For some families, that will be felt on a very personal level – they have expressed to Mr Starkey a sense of closure at finally learning what happened to their relatives at war.

Asked what he will do after 12 years at work on the volume, no pause is needed.

“I’m just going to play a bit of golf,” he said.

By DARREN CHAITMAN THREE Euroa posties with more than 80 years of combined postal experience will deliver their final parcels on Friday.

Carl Simmons, Joel Deschamps and Gerard Saxon said they had worked together as a “strong nucleus” and “can do the mail blindfolded”, but all three now felt it was time for a change.

Their departure will leave Melbourne man Jesse Borg with big shoes to fill as he replaces Mr Simmons as the principal contractor on Monday.

The 74-year-old Mr Saxon has been the veteran of the close-knit trio, having begun as a postie in Violet Town in 1965 before moving onto Euroa, Seymour and finally back to Euroa in 2007.

Mr Simmons entered the mail business as Euroa’s principal contractor in 2007, and Mr Deschamps joined the crew in 2019, after a prior stint with Australia Post in Port Melbourne from 1994–1998.

Mr Simmons said he had been “very fortunate in grabbing Gerard” when he started in 2007, “because his knowledge just took a huge weight off my shoulders”.

At the time, Mr Saxon had recently been made redundant from Australia Post’s large distribution centre in Seymour.

“I heard that [Mr Saxon] had been paid out and I was looking for someone to help me, so I got in touch with him and he jumped in with me,” Mr Simmons said.

“It was funny because some of the head officers came through that knew Gerard, and they said, ‘what are you doing here, we gave you a big payout’.

“And I said, ‘well, I’ve grabbed him and he’s worked under my name’ [as a contractor] – so therefore there was a loophole.

“He’s just got a wealth of knowledge, and knowledge in the post office is by far the most invaluable thing you can possibly get.”

He said when he first started in 1965, the post office was still run by the Postmaster-General’s Department (PMG), the post came in by train (whereas it is now transported by bus) and he would deliver telegrams.

More recently, he has transitioned from using a physical book to process deliveries to a scanner, from riding a bicycle to a motorised “postie” bike, and he has witnessed the depletion of mail and proliferation of parcels due to online shopping.

He said he was “very happy to have worked for Australia Post” and the highlight of his time as a postie has been “the last 12

years being a postie in Euroa”, where he lives.

“My body’s had enough now these days,” he said.

“I don’t think I’ll miss getting out of bed early in the morning, but … I’ll miss these guys [Mr Simmons and Mr Deschamps].”

Mr Deschamps said the highlights of his time as a Euroa postie had been “working with Gerard and Carl”, as well as “that sense of achievement every day, pushing out whatever comes through, doing the job and doing it well, and having satisfied customers”.

“You have to have a fair bit of strength in your mind with retention – so, there are skills that you develop in these type of jobs that you will carry through

very strongly in the course of your life,” he added.

Mr Simmons also said “the three of us being a team together” had been the highlight of his time as a postie.

“Mind you, it’s not all beer and skittles – we’ve got to go out in the elements, so it can be 40 degrees or it can be two degrees and raining, and both these guys have never faulted one inch to service the town and to service the contracts,” he said.

He added that “the community here has been fantastic”.

“We know 95 per cent of the population here, so it makes things a lot easier – having that relationship with our clients has made the job rewarding.”

Euroa’s magpie named Swoop the Big Barrwarrang

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE name of Euroa’s big magpie was revealed this weekend at the Euroa Show after Strathbogie Shire Council invited the community to submit name suggestions.

At the show opening on Saturday, the audience applauded as Mayor Laura Binks announced the magpie’s new name to be “Swoop the Big Barrwarrang”.

She explained “Barrwarrang” means “magpie” in Taungurung language and the name was selected by the Euroa Chamber of Commerce (ECoC) and Euroa Community Action Group (ECAG) after the public submitted suggestions.

The magpie sculpture by artists Tank and Tobin had been funded to the tune of $20,000 in last year’s council budget after ECoC and ECAG jointly submitted a proposal for a public sculpture in Euroa through council’s “Pitch My Project” process.

“I hope everyone’s had a chance to go see the magpie,” Euroa Agricultural Society president Andrew Douglas said after Mayor Binks revealed its new name.

Strathbogie Shire Council received 194 written submissions with suggested names for the bird through its online platform Share Strathbogie, demonstrating the magpie’s continuing popularity among locals.

The most “upvoted” name suggestions included Earnie at 101 votes (submitted by Molly), Wumindjika - Taungurung for Welcome at 99 votes (submitted by PMMurf) and Baawang - the Taungurung word for ‘magpie’ at 6 votes (submitted by Brendan Paterson).

However, while these were the most upvoted suggestions, many people submitted the name “Swoop” as a suggestion, with “Swoop Dog” another name suggested several times.

Other creative suggestions included “Watto” in honour of Scott Watson (“for his dedicated efforts in advancing youth and senior sports in Euroa”, Mang Mang (“the Taungurung word for remember”) and Margot the magnificent magpie (which has a biblical origin, meaning “pearl”).

Many more name suggestions, along with coloured-in magpies, were submitted on paper colouring sheets completed by young students.

By SHANE DOUTHIE “OUI, je le veux” is French for “Yes I do”.

And it was through these few words that Richard Hayes, born and raised in Euroa, married Clémence Carayol, a French woman whom he met overseas and brought back in his suitcase a few years back.

The wedding took place on September 16 at Mrs Carayol-Hayes’ family property in Mougnac, just an hour from Bordeaux, where the Carayol have been making wine and cognac since the 1960s.

The newlyweds exchanged rings and vows among the vines in front of the Carayol’s chapel, built in the 12th century.

“It was so great to celebrate our love with our friends and family in such a meaningful place,” Mr Hayes said.

It also held special meaning for the bride.

“Richard and I lived in Mougnac after moving from Paris and before moving to Euroa, that’s when Richard got super close to my fam-

ily and especially my grandmother Jeannine, who sadly passed away since,” Mrs Carayol-Hayes said.

“I know she was looking down on us that day and it meant the world to us.”

The wedding was also meaningful because both families hadn’t met beforehand.

“When your family is so far away, it is not geographically the easiest for them to meet your partner’s family,” said Mrs Carayol-Hayes.

“It was so great to see them meet and bond over our union, and to see my adoptive country mix up with my home country.

“It helped me a bit to overcome the homesickness I sometimes feel because of the love my family immediately felt for Richard’s family, how my dad Henri and mum Elisabeth embraced my parents-in-law and viceversa.”

More than that, Mr Hayes’ family took an active part in preparing the wedding and making it everything the couple had been dreaming of.

“I am very grateful for my

mum Jill and my sister Annabelle who I cooked with for the wedding,” said Mr Hayes.

“And for my dad Bernard and my brothers-inlaw Hugh and Simon who worked their magic in the garden.”

Mrs Carayol-Hayes said she was impressed by her new family’s prowess.

“When it comes to food and weddings, the Hayes are like Houdini: one minute nothing is ready, and the next you’ve got the most beautiful summer banquet in front of your eyes,” she said.

For the bride, this wedding felt like “the French edition of a Euroa Butter Factory nuptial ceremony”.

“My favourite thing was Jill’s idea of literally making our wedding cake into a cheesecake, which was actually a pile of French cheese wheels.

“It was the most French wedding cake you’ll ever see, and it went so well with the wine made by my family.”

Mr Hayes’ sister Sally, along with Mrs CarayolHayes’ godmother Chrystelle for the French part,

married the couple on that summer day.

Annabelle and Matteo, Mrs Carayol-Hayes’ baby brother, stole the show as they were the emcees of the day.

“I wasn’t a little girl who used to dream of my wedding day, but if I had, this wedding would have been the one I dreamed of,” Mrs Carayol-Hayes said.

This wedding was a bilingual celebration of the couple’s love. Mrs CarayolHayes’ beautiful bridesmaids, Delphine, Rhiannon, Marie, Aude and Pauline, all did moving speeches in both languages.

Mr Hayes’ groomsmen Charlie and Alex were both from Downunder, while the bridesmaids were a combination of French and Aussie DNA. “It was mesmerising to see our two worlds and cultures mixing together,” Mrs Carayol-Hayes said.

For her, the wedding looked exactly like the pair: “a bit crazy, perfectly imperfect, and mostly loud and colourful”.

“I think the takeaway from the day is how impressed the French were about how much Aussies can drink, and how impressed the Aussies

were about how much the French can eat,” Mr Hayes said.

“The Aussies taught the French how to throw a party and introduced them to the power of stubby-holders, which is a life-changing invention.”

The day was a learning curve for everyone, and it continued throughout the night, its pinnacle being when Mr Hayes taught all the French guests the Nutbush dance.

“And this memory will live in my head rent-free for a long time,” Mrs CarayolHayes said.

Our First Nations people asked us to listen I GREW up in New Zealand where native Maori lore is familiar and customary.

It is visible in the most celebrated and the most ordinary rituals.

In this small country, racial justice matters, and is upheld.

I knew of no other way for a nation to exist, until I moved to Victoria in 1977.

My sister and I, travelling together, immediately settled on this big “island”, charmed by promise and prosperity.

Australia was the land of “opportunity” and we had arrived.

What was stark and shocking, was the difference in the way Australian Aboriginals were treated, compared to other Australians and, compared to the New Zealand Maoris.

I couldn’t believe this great country could treat its First People so dreadfully, and then so indifferently.

How could a culture of 60,000 plus years become invisible?

In the country of my birth, the Maori culture is no longer mainstream, but it is still respected.

Their history, their food, their art, their culture, their language, their way, is everywhere and sits naturally beside the “pakeha” way.

It is not one or the other – it is always both.

Now, more than 40 years on, I am angry – not only because a genuine and generous invitation from Aboriginal leaders has been rebuked, but because a once in a lifetime opportunity has been lost.

When the Voice referendum was first proposed, polls showed that 70 per cent of Australians were in favour of it.

How quickly that goodwill was poisoned by those who chose political point scoring, lies and racism to undermine the truth and the real significance of an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

It is extraordinary that our First Nations people (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders)

are still willing to share with us.

We have taken their land, their pride, their children, their wages, their language, their culture and their hope, and yet they still extend the hand of friendship to us.

It is time to let the real stories be told, to acknowledge the injustices, to address inequity, and to build a Treaty with the First Nations people.

And then we must embrace it.

We must show that we want the future to look different; that we don’t accept the lies and the injustices that our white history has been shaped around.

Let’s show First Nations people that we can listen.

And then let’s walk with them.

We may learn how to be better carers of this land, and of each other.

I WAS disappointed, but not surprised with the CEO’s response to my questions I submitted to the October council meeting.

She made reference to an apology made and recorded in the council website minutes of the September council meeting, which I could not find.

I also could not find any reference by name to Paul Lancaster in the article in the Nagambie Community Voice dated July 26, 2023, nor any formal apology to this person who through his persistence and diligent attention to detail showed the inability of the shire to be truthful or transparent in the contractual and engineering design of the proposed Weir Road upgrade.

In this same meeting, one cannot overlook the address presented by Cr HayesBurke regarding the Voice to Parliament referendum No result.

I believe, like many others, it was not her position to give a view in that forum, while it was not connected to council business.

I also found the discussion relating to the

Wishing out year 12 Recent council meeting students the very best painted a messy picture AS our local year 12 students are well and

Monitor’s report must deliver much-needed clarity MORE than five months after the appointment of a second municipal monitor, Peter Stephenson, to Strathbogie Shire Council, and more than two months after his term ended, ratepayers and residents remain none the wiser regarding the precise issues that led to his appointment.

His report is with the Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne, and we await any outcomes, as ratepayers and residents deserve transparency and clarity.

The recent resignation of Councillor Reg Dickinson – the fourth to go this term – has only intensified this need for clarity.

Many have asked The Euroa Gazette in private to explain the situation or offer some insight, but our honest response has been we know as little as you do.

Yes, it is true Minister Horne’s letter to Mayor Laura Binks to advise of the second monitor’s appointment, as well as the monitor’s terms of reference, gave some indication of his mission, but the broad and general terms used, and the lack of specific examples, have left many of us scratching our heads.

In respective interviews with The Euroa Gazette following their resignations this year, former Nagambie ward councillors Dave Andrews and Reg Dickinson both alluded to what they perceived as issues involving the council administration, suggesting there was some tension between these councillors and the administration.

Responding to critiques Mr Dickinson made of council following his resignation, including that it was a “toxic environment”, Mayor Binks last week said: “the problem is as simple as some councillors continually failing to uphold the code of conduct and to

understand and follow good governance”.

But this still leaves many questions unanswered, such as: which parts of the code of conduct do they fail to uphold; in what way do they fail to follow good governance; which councillors have been at fault; and is this the view only of Mayor Binks, or will the monitor’s report also support the conclusion that the problem is as simple as this?

The Euroa Gazette does not blame the council for this lack of clarity – there may be good reasons they have not revealed more, such as protecting the privacy of individuals in particularly sensitive situations.

But our councillors are elected officials and need to be held accountable for allegedly failing in their roles – and how are residents to know how to vote at the next council election, if they wish to avoid seeing the same problems recur but do not understand the nature of the problems?

Ratepayers have also been the ones footing the bill: Mr Stephenson was paid between $30,000–$45,000 plus expenses; Janet Dore was paid between $20,000– $30,000; intensive training with Andrew Douglas of FCW Lawyers, prompted by the monitor’s appointment, totalled $43,182 (excluding GST); and further costs have been incurred by VEC countbacks that have followed councillor resignations, with a possible further cost of a by-election for Lake Nagambie ward on the horizon.

This is why The Euroa Gazette wants nothing more but to see an open and transparent accounting of the situation in Mr Stephenson’s report.

And if this is not provided, we will keep asking questions.

T-BRO’s Movember to return this year TYLER Brodie, the grandson of Euroa locals Lyn and John “Sargie” Sargood and Tom and Shirley Brodie, will return with his “T-BRO’s Movember” fundraiser again this year.

Mr Brodie said he has raised over $10,000 in eight years of participating in Movember, and last year raised a personal best of $2650.

Movember is a month-long annual fundraiser that involves growing a moustache and raising money for different health causes specifically impacting men including suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Born in Benalla and now living in Shepparton, Mr Brodie (known to some as “T–BRO”) has been participating in the men’s health charity initiative since 2015 after losing his best friend to suicide.

This year, Euroa business Burke’s Bakery have contributed a $40 voucher as a raffle prize.

Raffle tickets will be on sale at Rose City Mowers, Terry White ChemMart Benalla, Intersport Shepparton and Euro Garages Shepparton East.

Mr Brodie has expressed gratitude from the support he receives from Euroa, as well as his family.

“I’m very grateful to have my family helping and supporting me during my Movember,” Mr Brodie said.

“Also, I remember nan (Lyn Sargood) always told me I’m very lucky because I got good mogrowing genes from my dad and pop, so thank you Brodes and Sargie for that.”

By DARREN CHAITMAN DRIVERS taking Tarcombe Road to the Euroa Service Centre on Friday afternoon between 2.09pm and 2.28pm would have been startled by the dramatic sight of a van engulfed in flames on the Hume Freeway ramp.

Four CFA tankers from Longwood and Euroa attended the scene after a call was made at 2.09pm and found a van fully engulfed in flames, a CFA spokesperson said.

Grassland beside the ramp also caught fire.

The fire was deemed under control at 2.29pm and completely safe by 2.45pm.

The CFA were not aware of what caused the incident.

Euroa CFA firefighter Garry Kenyon confirmed he attended the scene.

“It was a pretty intense fire; the car was fully engulfed

when we got there,” he said.

Mr Kenyon said the firefighters used two lines to tackle both the car fire and grass fire.

He said the female driver had exited the car when she noticed smoke, and she was not injured.

“She was … not happy that she lost her favourite jumper and, I think it was her favourite jacket – and losing the car, I think the car was her pride and joy,” Mr Kenyon said.

Victoria Police also attended the scene, but a police spokesperson said the fire was not suspicious and would not be investigated.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON IN EUROA: Firefighters were called to the scene at 2.09pm on Friday and found a van engulfed in flames on the Hume Freeway, Euroa main ramp, just off Tarcombe Road.

Euroa artist Peter Hill to stage fictional art fair in Avenel NOW settled in its new home in Jubilee Park, Avenel, another exhibition is due to open in the ARTBOX space soon.

Euroa-based, Glasgow-born Australian artist Dr Peter Hill will showcase an interesting take, creating a fictional art fair booth in the space entitled The Art Fair Murders.

“One of my ongoing Superfictions, dating back to 1994, involves creating fictional art fair booths,” Dr Hill explained.

“Commercial art fairs have gained in popularity since the first one in Cologne, in 1967.

“These are held mostly in large trades halls and conference centres, such as ‘Jeff ’s Shed’ in Melbourne, or the old Navy Piers in Chicago.

“Like boat shows or home shows, they usually only last

for five days.

“They are all about money.”

Dr Hill said he also enjoyed contrasting the politics of the art fair with those of the museum, where some gallery hangs go unchanged for years.

“I also allow the novelist and pulp fiction side of my character to emerge by speculating that there is a serial killer loose in the art world, in 1989, the great year of revolutions, killing a different art world personality in each of the twelve months,” he said.

“Be confused. You may find yourself entering an art installation and leaving a novel.”

The Art Fair Murders, Avenel, runs from November 3 – November 28 at Jubilee Park, close to the library and train station.

Euroa Community Cinema to turn 20 years old THE Euroa Community Cinema is set to turn 20 years old on November 14, after it opened on the same date in 2003.

To celebrate, Strathbogie Shire Council is holding two

free screenings of The Greatest Showman (PG) at the cinema on November 18 and 19.

Mayor Laura Binks said this was “one of our most beloved and well-attended films” and

the screenings would be “a celebration of movies, community, and 20 years of cinematic excellence”.

AT the 131st edition of the Euroa Show on the weekend, two significant awards were made, jointly by the RASV (Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria) and VAS (Victorian Agricultural Shows) Ltd. The first is the VAS Ambassador Award, which is awarded annually.

Recipients are aged between 20 and 30 years of age.

The award highlights community and show involvement, talent, creativity and ingenuity of young Victorians.

The program engages young citizens to showcase their involvement across their local communities.

VAS Ltd wants to showcase the next generation and these programs aim to allow young people to represent their show society and community.

District News Violet Town tidings

By KIRSTY HARRIS THE Halloween fun in Violet Town on October 27 was big and widespread.

The organisers reported hundreds of people taking part and lots of children and adults dressed up for their big walking adventure around town for trick or treat.

This included a stop at the CFA station where the SES attended and tankers were on display.

Well done to Elliette and Steven and their team.

Three VT pennant bowls teams took to the rink last weekend – one team had a win with new players having an impact.

A lot of fun was had by all players.

The Gilbert and Sullivan show with a medley of favourite tunes to be held at St Dunstan’s Hall has had a change of date – now on Saturday, November 11, starting at 1.30pm – come after the market.

Alleged thieves target car left on Hume Highway in Balmattum

POLICE are investigating theft from a motor vehicle which allegedly occurred in Balmattum along the Hume Highway on the weekend.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Queenslander Shanja O’Shannessy alleged her car’s numberplates, batteries and a gold ring inside had been stolen, and posted pictures of the car’s smashed windows, damaged bonnet and what appeared to be the ransacked interior of the car.

She wrote that she and her partner came to Melbourne “to drop off a puppy for a lovely family” but hit a kangaroo on the Hume Highway in Balmattum at 5am, which made “quite an impact” on the Ford car.

She and her partner then took a taxi to the Euroa Motor Inn to stay while they awaited the partner’s father to come from Queensland to tow the car back, before discovering the alleged theft upon returning to the car the next day, according to the Facebook post.

Police confirmed the incident was reported on Sunday and “investigations are ongoing”.

As with His Church, God will never allow Israel to be divided or destroyed again, because He’s returning to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Japanese language students among first to tackle exams Year 12 students Jack Williams and Jordan Kipping share why they love learning Japanese

By LYNNDA HEARD EXAM time is upon Euroa Secondary College year 12 students.

Two students have confidently faced their first challenge, the Japanese oral exams, already – Jack Williams and Jordan Kipping.

Language exams are held off campus, so Jordan and Jack had to make their way down to the Novotel Hotel in Preston where secure areas are set aside for students and examiners.

“There is 15 minutes of conversation with the examiners and an hour of waiting and stressing leading up to the examination,” Jordan explained.

“We have to wait until our slotted time and it is nerve racking, especially watching the other students walk in to be assessed, and me just sitting there.”

Jack has been learning Japanese since year 5, was motivated, and so continued his study through to this final year.

“I enjoyed learning Japanese, knowing another language is great especially knowing how to communicate in another language,” he said.

“It is something not everyone can do.

“Once you crack your first lan-

guage you find it easier to learn other languages.

“I am not sure what language I would like to learn, possibly Welsh, dad is from Wales.”

Jordan visited Japan in year 6 and even though she doesn’t remember much about the trip she is looking forward to going back.

This time her trip will be all the more rewarding as she will speak the language.

There is a practical reason behinds Jordan’s wanting to learn Japanese.

“My intention is to study sciences and technology, music and languages, with the possibility of being able to study in Japan at some stage,” she explained.

“It would give me an advantage to be able to speak the language and I like also being able to speak another language.”

The future is a big question for Jack, but he is sure that it will include a move to Melbourne and uni – possibly sciences, no physics though.

“It’s exciting,” Jack said.

As far as other languages, Jordan would like to learn Hungarian.

“Gran and her sisters, my great aunts, all speak Hungarian,” Jordan said.

“English is their second language and it would be fun to be able to speak English and Hungarian with them.”

Being able to travel to Hungry and meet her family and speak to them in Hungarian is an added advantage of learning Hungarian.

Japanese teacher (and lover of all things Japanese), Jordan and Jack completed their last year of Japanese on distant education as there were only Jack and Jordan completing the course at year 12 level.

“I think that Ms Harrison enjoyed working with us as she would have appreciated speaking Japanese with others rather than

having to teach,” Jack said.

Ms Harrison had a treat in store for Jordan and Jack after their oral exam, a Japanese meal in at the Japanese restaurant “Super Hiro” in Melbourne.

According to both Jack and Jordan the food was very good, and it was the first time Jack had used chopsticks.

He even managed to not drop any food according to Jordan.

Jordan and Jack remarked on an interesting aspect of the Japanese language and how hard it is to say something rude in Japanese.

They spoke of how it is a respectful culture and language and that there are different forms of polite and respectful ways of speaking.

They both agreed that English is a horrible language.

Jordan’s opinion is it’s a smorgasbord of a language.

Jack put it more succinctly and said that it was as if they put English into a blender and turned it up to 11.

The oral section of their LOTE exam is over for these two students; the written is on November 14 where Jordan and Jack will be required to listen then write, and read then write.

Happily, both are confident.

Fire safety workshop in Euroa to help you prepare CFA workshop p to assist with yyour bushfire,, ggrassfire survival p plan A FIRE safety planning workshop will be held at Euroa Fire Station on Thursday, November 2.

The CFA-facilitated community workshop will assist people with developing their bushfire or grassfire survival plan.

“The main thing we’re trying to get people to focus on these days is thinking about how their personal circumstances might affect their decisions,” District 22 community engagement coordinator Emily Guthrie said.

“That might involve things like learning what their fire risk is – for instance do they live on the outskirts of town, or are they in a rural area, or are they right in the middle of town – that’s going to make different decisions based on those kinds of risks.

“And also, what are their personal circumstances – are they healthy, do they have a disability, do they have other people in the house that they need to look after?”

She said these circumstances will change how they act during

the fire season.

Ms Guthrie also said the workshop would cover property preparation tips.

“A well-prepared property puts people in a better position – even if they’re not at home, if they’ve got a well-prepared property it’s got a better chance of survival in a bushfire or grassfire,” she said.

“So, we talk about things like making sure your grass is kept short during summer, making sure your gutters are clean, making sure there’s not branches overhanging, all that kind of thing.”

Arrive at the workshop at 5.30pm for light refreshments – the session will commence at 6pm sharp and conclude by 8.30pm.

Early start to the fire season expected this summer THE recently released Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook warned there was a high chance of an early start to the fire season in Victoria this year, and fires in the Gippsland region earlier this month attest to that.

The Australian Energy Market Operator has also warned that there is increased risk of power outages this summer due to higher than usual electricity demand.

AusNet’s Executive General Manager Network Operations & Safety, Prue Crawford-Flett, said Ausnet are well underway with preparations for the upcoming summer.

This year, for the region that spans from Longwood to Jericho to Springhurst Ausnet has inspected 9142 power

poles from the ground and via helicopter.

These inspections resulted in proactive maintenance on 604 of these poles.

In the area from Violet Town to Longwood they have inspected 208 power poles from the ground or via helicopter, which resulted in proactive maintenance on 52 of these power poles.

They have also assessed 2930 spans, which is the space between two powerpoles, for any overgrown vegetation, and cut back any that required it.

AusNet’s electricity distribution network covers 80,000 square kilometres, which consists of 45,985 kilometres of overhead powerlines, 7908 kilometres of underground cables, 417,145 power poles and 90,000 streetlights.

COUNCIL fire safety teams have inspected properties across Strathbogie Shire to check residents have taken steps to reduce fire risk in the lead up to this year’s Fire Danger Period.

Teams inspected properties across the shire in mid-October and have now written to more than 217 landowners and occupiers to remind them their responsibility for ensuring their properties are fire ready.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said it was incredibly important to prepare your property for the Fire Danger Period.

“People with properties that require work to reduce their fire risk have been

sent information on how this can be achieved and if they have questions about their property or what they need to do, they should call Council on 1800 065 993 for assistance,” she said.

“Most people are aware of what they need to do but if you are new to the shire or just haven’t had time yet don’t worry, the most important thing is that you ensure the work is complete ahead of the fire season.

“Mowing or cutting back undergrowth, such as bracken and grass, and ensuring it is kept low over the entire fire season is the best way for you to reduce risk to property and contributes to overall community safety.

“People who fail to meet their fire reduction obligations are putting everybody at risk.”

A further council inspec-

tion will be done when the Strathbogie Shire Fire Danger Period officially begins - a date is yet to be advised by the County Fire Authority (CFA).

Anybody who fails to meet basic fuel reduction standards for their property after the second inspection will receive a fire prevention notice requiring immediate attention to reduce fire risk at the property.

Failure to act after a fire prevention notice leads to an infringement notice and a fine of $1923.

In addition, council will engage contractors to do the work and landowners or occupiers will need to pay the cost.

“You need to have a plan, and part of that plan is you do need to make arrangements for your animals,” Euroa Central Vets’ Holly Dever said.

“Whether it’s if you’ve got cats, you need to make sure you’ve got their cages and crates all ready to go, dusted off so that you can pop them in, if you’re going to move with them in the car.

“Dogs and cats you want to make sure you’ve got food and medication… especially for patients that have long-term chronic illnesses, they need to make sure they’ve got enough medication for if they do need to be uplifted and moved.”

She also recommended making sure animals’ microchip

Another situation to consider is whether pets and animals will be welcome at temporary accommodation.

“You need to know where you’re going to go with them – or somewhere you can take the animals, whether you’ve got a friend or something you can take the animal to and then you can go find shelter elsewhere,” Ms Dever said.

“It’s one of those things that is tricky because obviously not every hotel or motel is going to let you have animals, but people may find that if they put their case towards them, they’ll be helpful.”

THIS year’s Euroa Show was a resounding success, according to the organisers.

“It was certainly one of the best shows we’ve had in a long, long time,” Euroa Agricultural Society publicity officer Lyndal Dean said.

“It had that really good old-fashioned feel to it, but with a bit of a modern twist.”

The show’s attendance numbers and earnings were not yet available at the time of going to press, but Euroa Agricultural Society president Andrew Douglas said he believed it is not necessary to judge a show’s success by these figures.

“Success is not necessarily how much money you make, it’s the feedback you get from the public – that’s why we run the show, for the public,” he said.

“The weather might have been on our side, but to be fair, we’ve done a lot of promotion work.”

He said as well as the feedback from attendees, a sign of the show’s success was that it kept going late – at 3pm the crowds were still not dwindling.

Changes from previous years included the introduction of ferret racing (a highlight of the show), the yard dog trials being extended an extra day, the return of whip-cracker Stewart Bryant and the use of an extra room for wool handling in shearing competitions.

Mr Douglas added that the ag society had worked on the show “with a few younger people that had been a bit more innovative and set out the showgrounds in a slightly different format”.

nette Turbull said the event was “so Euroa”.

“I love coming to the Euroa show – it’s such a beautiful country show with all of the animals and the chooks and the horses, and going into the pavilion and seeing all the children’s artwork and the cakes and the flowers,” she said.

Branjee’s Geoff Broughton said he had so far enjoyed the shearing, the exhibitions and the food in the pavilion.

“Everything’s great – lots of people around,” he said.

Euroa’s Phil Squires estimated he had been to about 30 Euroa Shows in his lifetime and described this one as a “really good show”.

“The weather’s great, the displays are fantastic and probably the highlight was the whip-cracking,” he said.

The Euroa Gazette will publish show results as they become available over the coming week.

EARLIER this month, after Euroa Probus Club Fred Jungwirth welcomed members, the club heard from guest speaker Pam Zierk-Mahoney, a journalist and traveller who has worked in and out of the media industry for near on 56 years.

She has travelled the world including Ireland, England and Germany and found many stories along the way.

Pam started work at 17 years old, changing jobs from a finance company, to assistant/ bookkeeper to typesetting at a local newspaper.

She worked for Northern Suburban News, which became Geelong Independent, before she

married and had children.

Later she worked for Winchelsea community newspaper; studied Bachelor of Arts – Journalism; worked in Geelong Hospital where she helped to develop their computer system; and moved to Camperdown where she worked for the Western District Newspaper Group.

When she moved to Mansfield, during her first week on the job at the Mansfield Courier there was a fatal car crash, a suicide, and a sheep killed by lightning strike.

Pam never worked for bigger newspapers because as a journalist they are streamed into one area, but at smaller newspapers a journalist can cover everything.

Way Back Wednesday - a look back at what was making news 70 years ago this week.

ON this week 70 years ago, events advertised on The Euroa Gazette’s front page included the Catholic Youth Movement’s annual ball at the Civic Hall in Euroa, weekly Monday night square dancing at the same Civic Hall, the Longwood Catholic Ball (no venue given, but readers warned to keep the date free), the Euroa Bowling Club opening day to be opened by the Shire president, the waterworks trust election, a garden party at Seven Creeks Estate “by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Ian Currie”, and a Senior Young Farmers monthly meeting at the Civic Supper room.

This edition of the Gazette (dated October 28, 1953) also included results of the Euroa Show in the categories of draught horses, blood stock, hacks and ponies, hunters and trotters, children’s horse events, and goats.

There is also a lengthy and detailed article about an event named the Coronation Show, which may have been the name given to the Euroa Show this year, as 1953 was the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.

It was reported the show, which was organised by the Euroa Agricultural and Pastoral Society, “broke many records, including the gate-taking, which amounted to £580” and an estimated 7000 people attended.

The Euroa Agricultural and Pastoral Society is now known as the Euroa Agricultural Society, the organisation responsible for the annual Euroa Show.

An advertisement for Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum printed in this edition beckoned readers to chew the product on a daily basis, promising that “for more real pleasure and satisfaction, chew delicious Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit every day”.

“Enjoy this refreshingly different flavour at play, at work – at any time of the day,” the ad continued.

The ad also declared “TRAINS ARE FUN” and depicted a young boy and his father smiling at each other over a model train set.

By SAMUEL O’BRIEN THE Energy and Water Ombudsman (EWOV) has released its annual report, with Strathbogie Shire and the North East seeing spikes in case numbers despite state-wide trends.

EWOV, who handles, investigates and resolves complaints from Victorians in the electricity, gas and water sector, reported a downturn in case numbers.

The Strathbogie Shire bucked this trend, reporting a 20 per cent hike in cases in the 2022-23 financial year.

The shire joins local areas across the North East who have all seen increases in cases, with Wangaratta up by 105pc, Benalla up by

25.58pc and Mansfield up by 13pc.

These spikes in cases were dominated by billing issues, including high bills, errors and tariff questions especially around electricity.

Ombudsman Catherine Wolthuizen said many billing cases had been triggered by increases in the price of electricity in gas announced earlier in the year.

“People often don’t understand why the bill is so high and are worried about how they can afford it,” she said.

“They want their provider to either do another meter read or check there’s no leak, or provide an explanation as to why their bill has gone up so much.

“These are all really valid questions for people to ask at a time when households are facing increasing cost of living in other areas.

“To see really high increases in some cases is very concerning [for consumers].

“People want an explanation so that they can either get an adjusted bill or manage how they use their electricity and gas to try and keep those costs low or switch to someone else if they think they can get a better deal somewhere else.”

Ms Wolthuzien suggested using the Energy Compare website to find better offers suited to their particular energy use.

REG Dickinson has resigned from his role as a Strathbogie Shire councillor, saying he “can no longer work in a toxic environment”.

Mr Dickinson – who represented the Lake Nagambie Ward – is the fourth councillor to resign within the same term of council and the third to go this year, following the resignations of Melanie Likos in August 2021 (Lake

His resignation comes two months after the council’s second municipal monitor in 12 months, Peter Stephenson, delivered a report to Minister

for Local Government Melissa Horne, which is set to decide the council’s future but is yet to be published.

In an interview with The Euroa Gazette following his resignation on Wednesday, Mr Dickinson raised concerns about the council similar to those raised by Mr Andrews and Ms Hourigan, who had respectively mentioned unhappiness with council’s “culture” (Mr Andrews)

and “in-house political bureaucracy” (Ms Hourigan) upon their resignations.

“I resigned for my own personal wellness and I can no longer work in a toxic environment,” he said.

“Without going into specifics, it was ongoing and it’s been going on for a long time – we’ve had two monitors in, and all kinds of negativity going on, not just within council, but through

the administration as well.”

Mr Dickinson said he was unable to provide specific details due to confidentiality.

The Nagambie resident – who owned small businesses and worked as a schoolteacher in his earlier professional life – said he ran for council with “the best of intentions” and had “served with integrity” while keeping ratepayers front of mind.

By ROLF WEBER AFTER the disappointment of the cancelled event in 2022, due to the Goulburn River floods, the veteran golfers turned out en masse for the Jimmy Rae memorial event at Mooroopna Golf Club on Monday October 23.

Around 110 players participated in the second round of the GV Veteran Golfers championships and honoured the distinguished service of past president James Rae’s unbroken service on the committee for 27 years.

We were reminded of Jim’s contribution when the Victorian Veteran Golfer’s Association, this month, requested a copy of our constitution, drafted under Jim’s guidance, to use as a model for other districts to adopt as the model bylaws.

Thank you Shirley and daughter Amanda for your attendance and participation in the presentations.

We also acknowledge the great support we get from the management and staff of Mooroopna Golf Club and Sandy from the proshop who ensured that the day was a success.

The weather was again ideal moving from 13 to 21oC throughout the day with a light breeze from 6-11 km/ hour.

Familiar names appeared again in the top five scorers list in A grade with only the relevant positions changing from the first round.

The top scores in A grade were recorded by Peter Jeffrey 71/38 (stroke net / stableford) and Michael McAuliffe, Valley View with 74/35.

B grade winner, and top score of the day, went to Stephen Piggott, Cobram, 67/42; from Richard Farmer, Euroa 71/38.

C grade winners were decided on countback with Robert Oliver, Hill Top, getting the nod over Clyde Hammond, Kialla, both with outstanding numbers of 68/41.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 10th hole at 146 metres.

A grade was claimed by John Keller, Hill Top; B Grade went to Rolf Weber, Mooroopna, with his first shot of the day; and C Grade to Peter Giorchino, Mooroopna.

By KARYN THOMPSON WE had 14 woman playing a round of Stableford and a play off for the Gold Monthly Medal, in beautiful weather conditions.

The winner of The Gold Monthly Medal, the Seymour Voucher, B grade competition and the nine-hole competition was Kyle Carmichael with 39pts for 18 holes and 19pts for nine holes.

The A grade winner with 35pts was Moz Fowler.

The C grade winner was Ronda Richards with 31pts.

Nearest to the pin on the eighth was Annette Mills and on the 13th Irene Keogh.

Balls down the line for 18 holes went to Kylie 39pts, Moz 35pts and Annette 34pts.

Balls down the line for ninth holes went to Kylie 19pts on count back from Annette and Moz 18pts.

Wednesday we had 11 players for a special 12 hole game of Stableford, so as we could finish a little earlier and celebrate the end of the Winter season with lunch and presentations.

The winner of the Seymour Voucher and B and C grades was Jane Bow with 26pts.

The A grade winner was Monica Hurley with 22pts.

The six hole winner was Kylie Carmichael with 11pts.

On a count back from Monica, Carol Wallis and Jane Bow. The 12-hole balls went to Jane 26pts, Kylie 26pts and Carol on a C/B from Monica both with 22pts.

The winner was Glen Evans 44-9-37net and the runners up was Terry Lowis 46-10-36net.

There was only one nearest to the pin winner and that was Monica Hurley with a spectacular drive on the third.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB

By DAVID LOVE RECORD number of players contested the 2023 Goulburn Cup sponsored by the Nagambie Rowing Club, with near perfect weather conditions and the course presenting at its best made for a very enjoyable and exciting day of golf.

The big field of 99 had a steady northerly wind to contest with but the average score returned was well into the pluses for the Par event and scores over 40 for the Ladies stableford.

A GOOD DAY ON THE COURSE: Nagambie midweek golfers Monica Hurley, Bev Brown, Moz Fowler and Carol Wallis played well.

The winners of the Ladies stableford went the way of local sporting legend Moz Fowler and partner Bev Brown winning the division with a very healthy 44 points and regular winner across many years Moz and partner Bev Brown mastered the greens on the way to compiling the 44 points.

Runners up only one point adrift were the determined pairing of Monica Hurley and Carol Wallis finishing there round with an impressive 43 points, rounding out the top three and pushing the top two pairing all the way were Marj Dodd and Lorraine Smith on 42 points.

The nearest the pin prizes for the ladies went to the day’s winner Bev Brown with stellar shot on the third, Marj Dodd firing a solid strike into the head wind on the eighth, Annette Mills showing the touch we have all heard about at the 13th and Ange Richards caressing it close on the 16th.

A second win in three years and after studying the Nagambie golf club honour boards, possibly the best four ball player in the history of the club, Jeff Lodding wins again with a magnificently managed round and eight plus total.

Having to replace long time playing partner Bill Leviston through injury it was the keen and eager Steve Donnison hooking up with Lodding on short notice and most certainly doing his bit with an eagle on the 14th to help claim the win.

Four ball specialist Lodding put his mark on the card with a day of straight hitting and great touch around the greens, the pair were delighted to go on the honour board and enjoyed the big win.

Runners up were last year’s winners Kal Winnell and Jeremy Ezard putting up a solid title defence only to miss out by count back with a plus eight the quality pair did little wrong throughout the round only to finish agonisingly short.

A third place result went to North east visitors Bill Love and Willem Love having tried to win the event for 10 or more years a plus seven was recorded for another top three finish but the day could have been so much more with a bit more polish holing out.

The nearest the pin for the men were Paul Cox controlling the ball onto the narrow green at the third, Jock Mundy using his strength to reach the long eghth, John Hurley with a

surprise strike to the 13th and Dave Fullager’s run of good form continued on the 16th.

EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON THE Annual Spring Tournament was played over three days in conditions that the Euroa golfers have been dreaming of for many long wet winter months and the players came out in big numbers for the three days of events.

The weekend began with the Euroa Pharmacy mixed Pinehurst which of course was won by Paddy McCarthy and Melissa Eddy with 78 scratch.

The mother and son team of Levenia and Brendan Redfern were in second spot.

The handicap winners were the tried and true combination of Freda Edwards and Ross Wishart only half a shot ahead of Keith Seeber and Robyn Anthony.

Saturday saw a field of 76 players in pairs for the Burton Stores four ball par event with visitors from Avenel, Yallourn, Seymour, Benalla, Orbost, Riversdale and Jubilee with the visitors all taking home many of the prizes.

The ladies winners were Karen Amarant and Janet Symes from Benalla with an impressive +11 just one hole in front of Levenia Redfern again this time partnered by Michelle Thompson +10.

The father and son team of Scott and Charlie Watson posted +11 to win the Men’s event from Cain and Angus Murray of Avenel Club on +10 who got there in a countback over Euroa’s Keith Seeber and John Gilliland.

Visitors Will and Luke Kars took out the non handicap event.

Balls down the line for the men went to Jason and Brett Moran, Gary Ritchie and Neil Healey.

In the Ladies, Lorraine Ellis and Ronnie Doxey were in second place, in front of Sarah Bullen and Kae Lummas

while Lyn Carracher partnered daughter Kait in her first tournament to win a ball in the Ladies.

After golf the clubhouse was jam packed and willing on Lindsay Park’s Mr Brightside in the Cox Plate.

Sunday again saw a big field take on the 27 hole events sponsored by McKernan Engineering who can now breathe easy after the $1000 hole in one didn’t go off.

But Phil Squires gave it a red hot go on the 18th on Saturday, missing out by centimetres.

Forty-four players took to the field with visitors from Orbost. Griffith, Alexandra, Seymour, Medway, Broadford, Strathbogie, Eildon and Jubilee.

One of our visitors and winner of the 27 hole scratch event was Paul Andrijazac visiting from Yallourn after his mates who played last week’s PIA Championships raved about how good Euroa was.

The A grade 27-hole handicap winner was Paddy McCarthy making it two wins for the weekend, just one and a half shots in front of Ed Carracher.

Visitors took out B and C grades, but Euroa’s Paul Jones returned to form to be runner up in the Men’s C. Peter McMahon had the best 18 hole handicap score with net 66 to claim the prestigious Goldsworthy Memorial Trophy named after the club founder.

The McMartin’s Glen and Laurie had to be separated by countback on 73 in the A grade from two others.

While the B grade event went to Pete McMahon ahead of Lucas Paul.

In the C grade event, the bragging rights were claimed

by Dick Farmer Net 72, just one shot in front of Keith Seeber.

Another hugely successful event hosted by Euroa in perfect conditions.

Again made possible by the efforts of many volunteers and sponsors, Burton Stores, Euroa Pharmacy and Ford McKernan Engineering.

The competition just keeps coming as next week we tee up for the first of three stroke rounds to decide the Club Championships in three grades for men and women.

Paddy McCarthy looks to be in good form to go into the Veterans as favourite, but Pete McMahon and others will keep him on his game.

Reigning Champion Ed Carracher has to go in as favourite, but Mills, Roper, McMartin, Corradin, Bell and others will all be putting plenty of pressure on.

The ladies looks to be a two way tussle between current champion Melissa Eddy and club president Gail Allen in a battle sure to go to the wire.

CRICKET SHEPPARTON Cricket Association’s round five clash between Euroa and Shepparton United will take a different spin this weekend.

The winning A grade side will be crowned the inaugural Cricket Standpipe Cup champions.

The event is in honour of Goulburn Valley Water’s (GVW) Greening Euroa Standpipe, which will ultimately provide recycled water to Euroa Cricket Club’s home ground, Friendlies Oval.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said Friendlies Oval was just one of the many green spaces in Euroa that would benefit from the Greening Euroa Project.

“We are currently advocating to the government for funding to see this project keep Euroa’s public spaces green, which is becoming incredibly important with predicated drier conditions,” Cr Binks said.

The Greening Euroa project comes after GVW installed a purple recycled water standpipe near the Euroa Golf Course.

This type of standpipe provides Class B recycled water, suitable for use during construction works, or for watering sports fields, golf courses and more.

The recycled water standpipe is designed to reduce pressure on drinking water supplies in Euroa by providing an alternate source of water.

The Cricket Standpipe Cup follows on from the Football/ Netball Standpipe Cup match between Euroa and Mansfield held in the last round of the Goulburn Valley League 2023 season.

Euroa took both Senior Football and A grade Netball match honours and is hoping for more success this Saturday.

The first ball will be bowled at 11.30am, with a water café set up at the oval to keep players and spectators hydrated and hand out drink bottles.

By AUDREY McINTOSH PLAYING under lights last Friday, Euroa were the host to the Tallygaroopna Division One bowlers and at the end of the night the Euroa side lost to Tallygaroopna 83/94.

This match was perhaps a first for some bowlers in a pennant side to play under the lights so they fared very well.

Division Four were home to Tatura Hill Top on Saturday and had a very good win scoring 107/69 and Division Six travelled to Alexandra and they too won this match 69/41.

Rusty Schwab ,James Wall, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) wrestled the lead from Seymour VRI on the 18th end.

The scores were even with one end to play with the Avenel lads scoring the single winning shot on the last end, 23 – 22.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) lost five of the last six ends to record an eleven-shot loss, 18 – 29.

Mid-Week Pennant Division 6 Round 3 - Avenel 0 - 24 were defeated by Colbinabbin 14 – 56.

Winning the first eleven ends they powered home with a fourteen-shot win, 24 - 10.

Moiann Papageorgiou, Norm Billingsley, Ron Harrison, Graeme Toy (s) lost 12 – 29 just couldn’t catch an accurate Rushworth rink, losing 12 – 29.

Avenel is running a Business Bowls Challenge on Wednesday evenings from November 15 through to December 6.

The format is two games of six ends, two bowl triples with a maximum of one Pennant bowler per team.

Successful inaugural dressage jackpot day delights Ruffy riding community

By TRACEY SAVAGE THE Ruffy Adult Riding Club Inc. hosted their first Official Dressage Jackpot Day on Sunday, September 24, at the picturesque Ruffy Recreation Reserve.

With the sun casting a warm glow and the rustling of old oak trees providing a serene ambiance, the event proved to be an ideal introduction for both new riders and young horses.

The day commenced with a delightful morning cupper, expertly prepared by the kitchen crew, for the judges and participants.

As the judging kicked off, the oval quickly filled with the graceful movements of horses and their skilled riders, displaying the culmina-

tion of hard work and dedication.

Lunchtime brought a spread of country-style delights, featuring a fabulous barbecue, delectable slices, and classic scones with jam and cream, much to the delight of all attendees.

By 4.30pm, the last of the riders were gracefully completing their tests, leading to the eagerly awaited announcement of final scores and the subsequent prize presentations. The winners were awarded an array of prizes, with the jackpot winners receiving generous vouchers from Saddleworld Shepparton.

St Paul’s has kept its unbeaten record intact with a win over Gooram.

The reigning title holder dropped only one set for the afternoon with Mark Borthwick and Jack Kelly going down to Bob Furphy and Dan Godsmark.

Again, the ladies, Sarah Ternes, Fay Mollison and Kelly Hill were too strong for their opponents.

Mixed fortunes as Euroa sides navigate the round four tennis action

Euroa Lawn bounced back after last week’s loss to St Paul’s with a win over Gardens Gold, thanks in no small part to some impressive scores from the ladies.

Julie Brook claimed all three sets and boom recruit Marja Wondergem and partner Sue Vaughan kicked play off with a devastating eight to zero victory in their first set.

The final score was 51-46.

In division two, St Paul’s managed to topple the previously unbeaten Avenel outfit with an impressive eight sets to one victory.

Jason Goss stepped up to the challenge of the number-one-man and won all his sets comfortably.

Number one lady Rosie Cameron made light work of her sets and dropped just six games for the day.

Will Davey was sensational on debut, wining all three sets.

The final game score was 66-32.

An undermanned Longwood Lawn had a tough day on the bitumen at Swanpool.

The highlight was David Vaughan’s eight to zero win in the mixed.

But it wasn’t quite enough with the visitors going down 48-36.

By JOHN BRODIE CRICKET returned to a lush Memorial Oval on Saturday, as Euroa took on Katandra at home.

Euroa lost the toss and were sent into the field to start the afternoon, it was immediately apparent that Euroa’s bowlers were switched on.

A controlled start from Connor McCombe and Grayson Kirk restricted Katandra to just 20 runs from the first eight overs and built the pressure that allowed Lachie Cooke (2/5) to break through in his first over.

Cooke and Dion Grant (2/5) continued to mount pressure on the batsmen throughout their overs, the pressure resulting in the regular fall of wickets.

The introduction of Ryan Hill (1/20) and Cohen Paul (3/11) saw the pressure on Katandra build further.

The pressure combined with some excellent catching in the field that saw Paul strike three times late, bringing the Katandra innings to a close at 8/69.

Knowing the danger of chasing small totals, Euroa openers Cohen Paul and John Brodie knew they would have to work hard early to lay the foundation for a strong chase.

Katandra struck in the second over, dismissing Paul for one, to leave Euroa’s chase off to a shaky start.

Ryan Hill strode to the crease, making his intentions known early by carving four off his fourth ball.

An excellent display of powerful and precise hitting saw Hill race to 27, before falling to a good catch in close.

Rod Jones was next man in, and was determined to see Euroa over the line. Jones (11*) and Brodie (19*) were made to work hard by Katandra’s bowlers, however a combination of determination and hard running saw them secure Euroa victory in the 15th over.

Congratulations to all involved on securing Euroa their first senior win of the year.

A win that was built off the back of an excellent effort in the field, a just reward for the hard work many have put in at training.

By TIM JACKSON EUROA under 16 continued on their winning way on Friday night at the Euroa Friendly Society Recreation Reserve playing host to Waaia Cricket Club in a 20/20 format.

Euroa were sent into field after losing the toss.

The introduction of in form Euroa bowler Leo Murphy kick started a mini batting collapse with the dismissal of the dangerous Kaleb Gilmour with strong back up from the reliable Jack Walters.

Waaia were restricted to 4/83 after 20 overs.

Wicket takers for Euroa were Jack Walters 2/4, Leo Murphy 1/3 and Walter Jackson 1/0.

The fielding from Euroa lads was well disciplined again with no dropped catches.

Waaia started energetically, applying firm pressure to the batting line up.

Euroa lost early wickets, it was only a patient partnership from Tom White and Walter Jackson that steadied the run chase from Euro with both batsmen retiring.

This bought the dependable Oliver Wilson to the crease with runs still to mow down to get Euroa over the line, a measured innings by Oliver saw the target passed with six overs remaining.

Euroa best batters were Tom White 26 retired, Walter Jackson 26 retired, Oliver Wilson 18 not out.

Two Yea boys made their debut for Euroa Cricket Club Andrew Bree and Tate Hoefchen, both applying themselves admirably, well done lads.

The Euroa Friendly Society Recreation Reserve once again was presented in exquisite condition with comments coming all-round the ground on the presentation of the pitch and the oval, congratulations must be given to Peter Malone and his team for an outstanding job.

THE Longwood Cricket Ground witnessed an intense clash as Alexandra faced a formidable challenge against the local team.

However, what transpired on the field on October 21, 2000 marked a day of triumph and disappointment for both sides.

In what turned out to be a one-sided affair, Alexandra’s batting line-up struggled to find their rhythm, succumbing to their lowest AEDCA innings, amassing a mere 37 runs. The devastating blow was dealt by the skilled leftarm quick, Cameron Roper, who displayed an exceptional performance, claiming an impressive seven wickets for just 18 runs in a mere eight overs.

Roper’s remarkable feat earned him the prestigious 2000/01 Bruce Smith Memorial Award for Most Wickets, boasting an impressive tally of 45 wickets.

The ordeal for Alexandra didn’t end there, as the Longwood powerhouse, Michael Seach, took to the crease, displaying his batting prowess and dominance.

Seach’s exceptional inning, amassing an unbeaten 132 runs, comprised a striking display of 13 fours and 2 sixers, leaving the opposition grappling to contain his onslaught. Seach’s outstanding performance not only secured a resounding victory for Longwood but also added to his own accolades, having previously clinched the coveted Maygar bat awards in 1996/97 and 1997/98.

The match, etched into the annals of cricket history, serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and skill displayed by the players of both Alexandra and Longwood cricket teams.

Amidst the vibrant festivities, the spotlight shone brightly on the thrilling equestrian arena, showcasing a remarkable turnout of both seasoned riders and spirited ponies across various classes.

Despite facing the challenges posed by Covid lockdowns and recent floods, the Euroa Show delivered a spectacular display, empha-

sising the town’s resilient spirit and commitment to hosting top-notch events.

On Saturday, an array of classes put both riders and their trusted companions through their paces, demonstrating a remarkable blend of skill and dedication.

Kicking off with the fun ring, the event catered to everyone from beginners to seasoned stock riders, infusing the atmosphere with an unparalleled energy.

One local standout competitor, Lucy Bickerton, enjoyed a remarkable day, securing the prestigious Highpoint award.
