COMMUNITY consultation is underway as it debates how to celebrate January 26 going forwards.

The Strathbogie Shire Council has opened an Australia Day Celebrations Review on their website, giving the community a choice between two options.

Option one will have council no longer formally support celebrations on January 26 each year.

This will also involve a lowering of the Aboriginal flag to half-mast out of respect for the First Nations People and what the day

Community awards will be held in May instead to coincide with National Volunteer Week.

Council will still hold a

citizenship ceremony on the day.

Option two will leave things as they are currently.

On the review page, council say that their aim is to be more respectful and to begin to recognise the significance of the day to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The review page also says that that option one is in accordance with their inclusivity objectives, the council community vision

and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC).

Chief executive officer of the TLaWC, Matthew Burns, said he was in favour of the change and appreciated council’s work to consult the TLaWC in the decision making process.

“I’ve had conversations with the chief executive officer, with the director of community and planning and also community members

about this,” Mr Burns said.

“I do feel like we have had ample opportunity, council wanted to make sure we were aware of this and also obviously understand if we were supportive of the approach or not.

“We provided guidance and advice.

“We’re absolutely supportive.

“The approach from council is consistent with the view of Taungurung.”

Cr Andrews in Australian Masters Rowing Championship

By DIANE GRANT THE Euroa Gazette caught up with Cr David Andrews, a member of the Nagambie Rowing Club who was part of a team of Nagambie rowers who ventured across to Lake Wendouree in Ballarat for the 2022 Australian Masters Rowing Championships.

Excellent conditions greeted the athletes and spectators over the four days last month.

Almost 800 rowers competed in 355 events, to make for a hectic and exciting few days of competition.

Cr Andrews spoke about the team that participated in the event.

“Representing Nagambie Rowing Club were Wendy Cotter, Heather Bradbury, Deb Dudley, Katelyn Johnson, Andy Horsburgh, John Strapps, Leigh McIntyre and

Dave Andrews,” he said.

“Nagambie was well represented across the regatta, with some mixed results.

“We did greet the judge on a number of occasions though and bought home some ‘booty’ in the form of medals.

“Unfortunately the club captain, Suzan Andrews, was out of action due to recovering from a medical issue, but she did attend on a couple of days to encourage club members and keep in touch with the rowing world.”

When not racing, Nagambie members also volunteered their services to the organisers to help with the running of the regatta.

Heather Bradbury showed her hidden talents by filming the races for the live streaming of the event, which was displayed in the hospitality tent and on-line,

“Masters Sports are interesting, in that you ideally race in your age group, a five year bracket,” Cr Andrews said.

“Your age doesn’t matter per se, but being early in your bracket puts a bit of youth on

your side.

“For example, if you are 50 years old in the current year, you can row as a d-grader, 50 to 54 years, against athletes who may be older in that category.

“While that gives you and age advantage, it

unfortunately doesn’t give you a skill advantage, and you can find yourself against quality athletes.

“To birthday later in the year is the dream, as you are in the higher age category, but effectively underage.

“December babies are laughing.”

David Andrews is a 100 per cent Nagambie advocate, however, he saw that Ballarat put its best foot forward while they were there and brilliant sunshine was the order of the day.

Cr Andrews discussed the history behind the course.

“If you know your Olympic history, you would know that the 1956 Olympic rowing was conducted on the Lake,” he said.

An impressive memento of those Olympics features at the end of the 2km course, where the Olympic rings and

cauldron are.

Reading the base of the ‘ring’ tower, there was a familiar name on the athlete’s plaque.

Some of you will know, or know of, Mr Neville Howell OAM, who has called Nagambie his home for nearly 10 years.

Neville in fact, as stroke of the Australian eight, rowed into third place for a bronze medal at the games.

There are plenty of other impressive accolades that could be placed on Neville, however, it was great to see his name and some 66 years later rowing on the same venue he also rowed on in 1956.

Now the Masters rowing season is officially over it will soon fire-up again in September/October, with the start of the season in Melbourne.

Haines vows to put electorate at top of list

By STEVE KELLY INDI Independent MP Helen Haines is not letting the glory of her emphatic election victory or a call from incoming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese go to her head, saying there’s a lot of work to do and it starts this week.

It was a massive win for Dr Haines who has gained 40.96 per cent of the primary vote and enters her second term of parliament alongside a wave of Independents who won the favour of voters in their respective electorates.

But while the Wangarattabased federal MP said she will work with these Independents, who have also chosen to adopt the election campaign platforms of climate action and the formation of an integrity commission, she noted one distinction.

“I am the only rural and regional independent MP on the crossbench and looking after my electorate is first and foremost on my priority list,” Dr Haines said.

“With this comes strong action on climate change,

to establish a network of agricultural extension officers in regional hubs across Australia, and to continue to advocate for improved telecommunications.”

One of the numerous climate initiatives is to lower the cost of solar roof top batteries by up to $3000 with new incentives through the existing Small-Scale Renewable Energy scheme.

No-interest loans of $5000 to households to purchase batteries, solar, and electricappliances are also part of her plan.

Under Dr Haines’ plan for agriculture Australian farmers would benefit from on-the-ground technical support to help them access carbon markets, adopt new low-emissions technologies, and retain access to export markets.

Her strong advocacy for the electorate in the last term of government pushed to hold the government to account with the introduction of the Australian Federal Integrity Commission Bill, however, it was not passed through parliament.

Labor went to the election promising to introduce a fed-

eral integrity commission by Christmas, and Dr Haines said it makes sense for her Bill - which has support politically and through the legal profession - to be used to achieve the desired outcome.

Prime Minister Albanese wished Dr Haines well and congratulated her on her re-election but she made a point of highlighting that not all seats have been counted

to determine whether it’s a minority or majority government.

“I will work with all sides of parliament and I will vote on each piece of legislation on its own merits, like I always have, but I will always put Indi first,” she said.

“I have a substantial list of shovel ready infrastructure projects across the nine local government areas of Indi

and I will speak with the Federal Government, including the treasurer, with the goal to achieve funding for these.”

Dr Haines’ 7.31 per cent swing in the two-candidate preferred vote over the next best, Ross Lyman of the Liberal Party, has been a thrilling achievement for the Indi MP, her team, and growing number of supporters.

“I am very grateful to receive such an endorsement with this big margin and I will continue to work hard for this electorate,” she said.

“The vote across Australia everywhere shows that people are sick of the big party politics and the conflict and they’re after real representatives in parliament.”

With vote counting ongoing, other Independents likely to be declared winners include Monique Ryan (Kooyong, VIC), Zoe Daniel (Goldstein, VIC) Allegra Spender (Wentworth, NSW), Sophie Scamps (Mackellar, NSW), Kylea Tink (North Sydney, NSW), Dai Le (Fowler), Kate Chaney (Curtin, WA), Andrew Wilkie (Clark), and Zali Steggall (Warringah, NSW).

“Making change, especially around issues relating to Aboriginal affairs or involvement of the Aboriginal community, isn’t always the responsibility of traditional owners and Aboriginal people,” he said.

“Leadership comes from all of the community that needs to step up together as one and take responsibility.

“It is council’s responsibility to lead for their constituents and that includes Taungurung as a local community group.

“It’s really pleasing that council wants to lead on this and they know it’s consistent with the conversations we’ve had previously and that it’s consistent with our memorandum of understanding.”

Debate about January 26 has already become a big topic of conversation in the region, with the community noticeboard pages online showcasing many different opinions on the matter in recent days.

The feedback period for the community consultation will remain open until 9am on Monday, June 20.

Council aims to consider all the feedback and endorse an option by Tuesday, June 28.

Top officer wins award

By GUS RIDDER LEADING senior constable Lucas Paul of Euroa has been awarded the Peter Toomey Officer of the Year Award for Community Policing.

He was to be presented with the award in 2020, however, ongoing COVID restrictions delayed the presentation.

Ld Snr Const Paul was eventually able to receive the award at the Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce networking event at the Memorial Oval last month.

The Peter Toomey award is granted each Rotary year to a Victoria or New South Wales police officer in District 9790 who shows an exemplary commitment to their local community.

It is named in honour of the late Peter Toomey, a distinguished Rotarian and long serving police officer, who helped establish this award at both his local club of Pascoe Vale as well as at the district level.

Members of the Rotary Club of Euroa were pleased to recognise the contribution that Ld Snr Const Paul has made and continues to make in the local community.

The nomination submitted by the local Rotary club highlighted a range of activities and achievements which demonstrated his support for, and engagement

strong and compassionate leadership in time of grief in the community and has been active in working with the Strathbogie Shire in addressing the potential threat and presence of drugs in the community.

“He was involved in the community consultation process on drugs and has presented to groups including Rotary to create awareness and partnerships.

“As a volunteer, Lucas plays an active role in the sporting arena, coaching junior football for Euroa, and as both a player and president of the Euroa Cricket Club.

“He also played a part on the committee for the redevelopment of the Friendlies Oval which has resulted in the magnificent facility that now greets you as you enter the town.”

After receiving the award, Ld Snr Const Paul received a standing ovation from the 45 attendees in the room and gave thanks to Rotary.

“To be presented with this award by Rotary means a lot,” he said.

“It’s amazing what you guys do, the fact that it’s all volunteers and the time you put it in.

“For you guys to nominate me, it’s truly amazing.

“It makes me emotional.”

He spoke to the audience about what his role in the community has meant to him.

“I’ve copped a lot of kicks up the arse which is an unfortunate part of the job,” he said.

“We understand that and that’s fine.

“We get to spend time with people here and do the job properly.

“It means a lot when people in the community still remember the work we’ve done to help.

“I really appreciate it.”

Since becoming the 100th Council in Australia to declare a Climate Emergency in 2021 and just the third to pass this Notice of Motion unanimously, we have been working with our community to develop a Climate Change Action Plan.

Last week the steel piles were driven into the creek bed and banks where the bridge foundations will be located and the reinforced concrete foundations will be cast on the piles this week.

The suspension bridge will be supported on the specially designed steel frames embedded into these foundations. Works are expected to be completed in mid-June.

CONSTRUCTION of the new suspension bridge over the Rockies on the Sevens Creek at Euroa is well underway and residents can learn more about the construction process at an event on Saturday, June 4.

‘Sausage by the Sevens’ will give residents an opportunity to chat with the engineers responsible for the project and discuss details of the construction during a sausage sizzle.

The steel piles were recently driven into the creek bed and banks where the bridge foundations will be located.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said it has been exciting to watch the progress of the suspension bridge across the creek.

“The construction will not be completed by that time, but it will be a chance to talk to the engineers and learn the intricacies of constructing this suspension bridge.

“The bridge will provide

a connection to the Apex Community walking track with the new bridge providing two-way all abilities access over the Sevens.”

The project received funding of over $560k that was provided by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and is expected to be completed in mid-June.

Euroa Cinema works unveiled in all their glory

By GUS RIDDER AFTER a long nine months, the Euroa Community Cinema had a successful reopening on Saturday night, with a packed house showing up to watch Downtown Abbey: A New Era. The refurbished cinema looked immaculate, with brand new seats bringing the benefit of a more comfortable and accessible experience for patrons.

A red carpet was laid out at the cinema foyer for attendees to walk as they entered, with the Euroa Secondary College band played classic movie themes in the background.

Katherine Bell, who is employed as the projectionist at the cinema, was thrilled to have the refurbishments completed.

Cinema volunteer Brendan Paterson spoke about the benefits the upgrades would have for the community.

“This cinema is so accessible now,” he said.

“You can park immediately out the front, there are no stairs and now we have

so much more room in the cinema itself.

“Not only is it helpful for elderly people and wheelchairs, it’s great for families who want to bring their young kids along in a pram.”

There are newly fitted dedicated seats for those with disabilities, and a large gap in between the rows of seats makes it easy for people to safely move around.

Movies will continue to be screened every weekend, with more session times, films and more to be announced in the near future.

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce held a gala launch for their upcoming business awards at the Memorial Oval recently.

The event was well-attended, with the function space at the oval filled with several local businesses and organisations.

Food was provided by A3 catering, a Nagambie based outfit that has expanded to provide services to Euroa.

Presented as a networking opportunity, the gala launch allowed like-minded individuals to discuss the outlook for Euroa’s businesses and get to know each other.

Sponsorship opportunities for the business awards were outlined during the event, with packages ranging from $100 for support sponsorship to $3000 major sponsorship packages.

The night was headlined by guest speaker Fergus Watts, a former AFL player turned business and charity executive, spoke about his story and progression through the business world to those in attendance.

“I broke my leg playing football and was quickly out of the AFL system,” he said.

“That’s where my love of leadership started and taught me as a developing teenager that I could be me.

“We haven’t locked in a date yet, but we will do this shortly.

Road safety cuts come as road toll climbs ACCORDING to Steph Ryan and the Nationals, Victorian parliamentary committee hearings have exposed a $50 million cut to road safety in the state budget for 2022-23.

They claim funds were slashed from the budget despite the state’s road toll increasing to 99 lives lost, up from 87 deaths at the same time last year.

The Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) also heard road safety spending in 2021-22 plunged to $86.6 million following an expected outlay of $136.9 million a 37 per cent cut on projections.

Targets for road safety initiatives have been cut from 73 to 34, pending Commonwealth government investment.

State member for Euroa and shadow minister for Roads Steph Ryan said the cuts were concerning.

Climate action a priority ticket of business Labor candidate shares views on Indi,, and rise of Independents p OFF the back of the campaign trail, Labor candidate for Indi Nadia David believes Australian politics has officially transitioned away from the dominance of the two major parties and she sees it as an opportunity for her party to work with Independents to bring some great change.

The newly elected ‘teal army’ of MPs have been beating the drum of climate changes action off the back of Indi MP Helen Haines’ work over the last term, and it is climate action that Ms David believes both the Coalition and Labor could have done more with, in past years.

Many commentators say the influence of fossil fuel companies on the major parties has played a convincing part in Australia’s lack of action on climate change, but odds are in favour that this will navigate a much different course in coming years.

Ms David said this is a new age of Australian politics where we have finally transitioned away from a two-party system towards what is essentially a European model of government.

“Both the major parties - Liberals far more, but I am biased - need to reconcile with climate action and neither have done their best work there,” she said.

“They are both grappling with their relevance and their ability to be flexible and nimble when they are supported so greatly by big fossil fuel companies and big company interests.

to do what it really wants to do rather what it thinks it can do.

“This is a great thing for our nation and the planet and our kids.”

Some 7000 Indi voters put Labor first on their ballot slip, just 8.44 per cent of the primary, a slide of 3.65 per cent on the party’s 2019 election result.

This surprised Ms David as she said numbers don’t reflect the response that her team got from voters as there was a lot of positive sentiment in the electorate for her and the issues that she raised.

“I was the only candidate talking about pay rises, work-

ers’ rights in a positive and true honest sense that Labor cannot solve that straight away,” she said.

“Building houses takes a long time and building a hospital takes 10 years and a lot of the feedback was ‘I will put you second’.”

On a national scale Ms David said Labor had a really positive election night winning seats they’ve never held, and holding others they thought they’d lose.

Ms David believes that in the current landscape, as a Labor candidate, she hasn’t got a hope of winning in Indi in the next 20 years.

“In Indi it’s going to be down to the next three years and I took heart that the Nationals are all but annihilated here because of the irrelevance they have here,” she said.

“They’ve held their seats but there really weren’t candidates that ran against them who could win.”

Ms David believes the Independents who won all come from the same place of complete disenfranchisement with a Liberal sitting member who is disconnected from their community and is conceived as being a person who is not listening or working for their community.

“The teal is the most important part and it was originally a combination of blue Liberal and Green for climate so they aren’t necessarily progressive but they have those twin topics of integrity and climate, but after that what happens?” she said.

Upcoming events in the Strathbogie Ranges

By GUS RIDDER THE Strathbogie Ranges Conservation Management Network (SRCMN) is holding a variety of events around the region this June.

A ‘Big Hill Walk’ will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 9:30am.

This 4.5km walk is rated as an easy to moderate level for those interested, and is free of charge to anyone that registers.

This stroll will take you through the foothills of the Great Dividing Range.

Big Hill is a mere 15 minute drive from Euroa and is a beautiful walk studded with ancient granite boulders and stunning views.

There are a few steep ascents and descents, with plenty of boulders to thread your nimble frame through, but thankfully no thick scrub or major creek crossings.

Make sure you’ve had your hat and hiking boots serviced by a licensed professional, and that you bring plenty of water and food.

EVENTS IN THE RANGES: SRCMN will be holding multiple free events throughout June.

A wildlife drone surveying workshop with Field Master Systems (FMS) will be held in Strathbogie on Friday, June 24.

This night-time event will run from 7pm to 8:30pm and involve helping the FMS team search for wildlife in the Strathbogie forest.

Using the latest drone mounted thermal camera technology, the FMS crew will

be holding a night-time workshop showing the benefits of drones for animal surveys.

FMS specialises in conducting large scale animal surveys of both native and introduced species, including greater gliders, koalas, deer, pigs, goats and more.

The FMS team will take you through their process for conducting wildlife surveys, give a rundown on their equipment and experiences, and talk about drone uses and their possibilities.

This event will also be free, with a specific location to be confirmed closer to the date.

Euroa CFA enters virtual reality

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Country Fire Authority (CFA) was able to test new virtual reality technology made to help volunteers train for incidents that they may not see on a regular basis.

Both junior and adult members of the brigade were able to use the innovative system for training exercises.

Developed by firefighters for firefighters, the FLAIM trainer and extinguisher systems provide volunteers with a real-life experience to assess their skills without exposing them to danger.

It works in a similar way to a flight simulator for pilot training but is designed specifically for firefighters, combining virtual reality technology with real-life equipment such as an extinguisher, hose and heat suit that simulate both the visual and sensory feelings of being in a real fire.

Similar to a video game, the system involves placing a virtual reality headset on and using an extinguisher like a controller.

There are then several scenarios that can be selected, such as car, kitchen, office, garden and plane fires.

The person using the

headset will be able to walkaround and have 360 degree views of the scenario.

Others can watch while this is occurring via a monitor or screen, providing an opportunity to create a beneficial training exercise

where more people can participate, learn and give advice.

Chris Taylor, the coordinator of the CFA’s virtual reality team, was able to explain the project.

“This training is really

good for all different types of brigades, from big urban ones to tin sheds away from major towns,” Mr Taylor said.

“This provides better training and access for those brigades, giving them the

“In the trainer there are around 60 different scenarios and with the extinguisher there are around 40.

“In the extinguisher system you choose the appropriate option for a fire, such as dry chem, carbon dioxide or water.

“It’s as real as it can be; the system will fail you if you use the incorrect extinguisher or are too close to the fire.”

Mr Taylor said the CFA has invested heavily in the project.

“The CFA has purchased 10 trainers and 10 extinguishers, both to be used around the state,” he said.

“We are looking to get virtual reality systems training across the whole state.

“We currently look after about 1200 brigades statewide.”

The technology is created

by Geelong-based company FLAIM. The FLAIM equipment is now in 35 countries across the world and in all seven continents, including Antarctica.

Defence forces and fire services are using the technology, as well as private companies in mines and similar industries.

GARY Bourke of Shepparton has exhibited a variety of cars and bikes at The Australian National Show and Shine Euroa for a number of years now and this year will be no different.

The car that he will be presenting once again this year, a somewhat innocent looking two-tone green FC Holden has been there before.

From the outside it is certainly tidy and well-presented, but apart from its pristine presentation it really doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary.

That is, until you open the bonnet!

Lurking in the engine bay is a very fiery 202 motor.

It looks like it’s impatient for someone to hit the starter.

In fact, this car has had many successful outings on the drag strip, with results contradicting its passive appearance.

The FC Holden was originally launched by GMH in 1958, with a 2.2 litre (132ci) engine developing just 72 bhp (54 Kw.), and driving through a three-on-the- tree transmission.

The FC was a facelift of the FE model which replaced the “humpy” 48/FJ series.

Gary found his car some years later in 1976, at the panel shop of Shepparton racer Tino Leo and purchased it for about $250.

Engine wise, it wasn’t all that brilliant and on a test run the battery fell into the fan, and a motor

The “old grey” was first replaced with a 186 red motor, which later gave way to a 202 engine out of a GTR XU1 LJ Torana.

Mr Bourke gave some insight into the engine.

“The 202 XU1 engine was built by my good friend David Baillie in 1984 and stayed in the car until mid-2016 - an exceptional engine that I still have,” he said.

The XU1 went well, but Gary wanted more.

We can’t say too much here, but Gary wants to express his thanks to Vince Whitehead for the exceptional work that he has done on the car.

When we asked about power and torque output, Gary simply said these have been “significantly improved.”

Further upgrades included a 3-speed auto, with four-wheel disc brakes, front end from an HR Holden and differential from a Commodore.

The diff is fairly high ratio at 3.08, to assist comfortable cruising.

Despite this, the FC can still get exciting under serious acceleration!

Wheels are now 14 inch to accommodate the disc brakes and are unremarkable, with just 7 inches of width at the rear, adding to the passive appearance of the car.

It presents as a genuine secret weapon.

$250 power saving bonus available soon for all Victorians

By GUS RIDDER THE Victorian Government has announced a new $250 Power Saving Bonus program for all Victorian households.

This program will provide a one-off payment for Victorian households to ease cost-of-living pressures and encourage Victorians to compare their household energy prices and save money.

From Friday, July 1 you will be able to access the new $250 program by visiting the Victorian Energy Compare website and submitting an application.

The new $250 program builds on the success of the 2018-20 $50 bonuses for households and the 2021-22 $250 bonuses for concession recipients.

These programs provided over a $110 million to more than 850,000 Victorian households.

To be eligible for the new power saving bonus, Victorian households will need to have a recent residential electricity bill and be the account holder for that bill.

Households will also be required to visit the Victorian Energy Compare website or engage with an energy affordability service through one of the participating community outreach partners.

The Victorian Energy Compare website is labelled as the only free and independent online

energy price comparison service to Victorian energy consumers.

Time to get planting for winter WONDERING which vegetables to grow in winter?

Growing your own winter vegetables is not as difficult as you think.

To get it right, you will need to know the right plants that do well in the cold weather and which ones can thrive in a cool climate.

For example, in areas such as Euroa and the surrounding districts, which have a milder winter climate than other north east regions, you can grow these winter vegetables: broccoli, peas, broad beans, cabbage, spinach, beets and kale.

For the best results, you should plant these vegetables in a place where they will get full sunlight as they need as much sun as they can get regardless of the season.

The sun is low during winter months, so think carefully.

Your garden should be in

an area that gets full winter sunlight, so take a look at your property and pick the area that gets the most sun.

The best way to plant a vegetable garden is to plant your veggies in rows with each variety in its own row.

You can also opt for a winter vegetable container garden.

To prevent pest infestation, you can plant herbs that are known to repel garden pests.

Growing an eco-friendly garden is easy and features the following steps: create fertiliser from compost, use mulch or a drip irrigation system to control water usage, learn how to attract friendly insects and birds to control garden pests and lastly apply companion planting.

Regardless of the size of your garden, you can grow winter vegetables that will do well in the climate.

Plant the vegetables close together for a big harvest.

Perfect chicken noodle soup for winter SERVES eight.

Total time: 75 minutes.

INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 carrots, sliced 2 celery stalks, sliced 1 small onion, chopped 5 garlic cloves, chopped Salt Black pepper 1/4 cup dry white wine 8 cup chicken stock 1kg bone-in, Âskinless chicken breast and thighs 2 1/2 cup uncooked wide egg noodles 3 tbsp. chopped fresh flatleaf parsley 2 tbsp. chopped fresh dill 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Add carrots, celery, onion, and garlic.

Season with salt and pepper.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes.

Add wine and cook until

syrupy, 1 minute.

Add chicken stock and chicken pieces.

Season with salt and pepper.

Bring to boil over high heat.

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until chicken is cooked through, 40 to 45 minutes.

2. Remove chicken; shred thighs with two forks and chop breasts into large bitesize pieces.

Return meat to pot; discard bones.

3. Add noodles to soup and cook, stirring often, until tender, 6 to 7 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in parsley, dill, and lemon juice.

Season with salt and pepper.

Is your gas heater safe?

CARBON monoxide (CO) could be spilling into your home while your gas heater is running.

This dangerous gas doesn’t make a sound and you can’t see it or smell it.

To be sure your gas heater is safe, you should: • have it serviced at least once every two years, by a qualified gasfitter; • check for safety advice as some heaters need fresh air flow to operate safely; • service your gas heater for winter; and • have it serviced at least once every two years by a qualified gasfitter.

Homeowners should find a qualified gasfitter as if you would find your local tradesperson.

Be sure to check their licence to make sure they have the required qualifications to complete the service and testing.

For renters, Victoria’s new rental laws came into effect last year.

Under the new laws rental providers have certain

responsibilities for gas and electrical safety.

The rental provider must ensure a gas safety check of all gas installations and fittings on the premises is conducted every two years by a licensed or registered gasfitter who is endorsed in the specialised class of Type A gas appliances servicing work (Gas Serving Type A on the Plumbers Identity Card).

To make sure you use your gas heater safely: • check if a safety alert has been issued for your gas heater; • don’t use kitchen range hoods or exhaust fans at the same time as your heater - this can create what is known as a negative pressure environment, where carbon monoxide is drawn into living spaces.

• don’t leave your gas heater on overnight, or for extensive periods; • install a carbon monoxide alarm as a back-up measure; • if your heater is very old, consider replacing it; and • never bring portable outdoor gas appliances indoors.

CO building up inside your home can make you sick for a short time, have long-term health effects or even kill you and your family quickly.

Some of the symptoms are similar to cold symptoms, common in winter.

This can make it difficult for a doctor to diagnose that you are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, they could be caused by carbon monoxide leaking from your heater: Dizziness, feeling sick or nauseous, headaches, people and/or pets getting sick at the same time and feeling unwell only when you’re at home.

Act quickly if you think your heater could be making people sick.

Call Nurse-on-Call, see a doctor or dial 000 in an emergency.

Leave the house immediately and get into the fresh air.

Turn off all gas appliances straight away, open windows and doors to let fresh air into the house.

CFA makes chimney and heating warning THE Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging residents to keep themselves safe by checking and maintaining their fireplaces, chimneys, fireboxes and flues.

Firefighters respond to numerous chimney fires every year that start from fireplaces and wood heaters.

In 2021, CFA firefighters responded to 130 chimney fires, almost half of which occurred during the winter months.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan urged Victorian households to have chimneys professionally cleaned annually to avoid the buildup of creosote, a highly flammable black tar-like residue that can clog chimneys.

“Winter is the perfect time to curl up in front of a warm fire, but chimney fires can quickly turn into house fires,” CO Heffernan said.

“Spending a few minutes now to check your chimney could be one of the most important fire safety actions you take this season, and you can easily check for creosote build-up or obstructions by simply using a torch before lighting a fire.

“Creosote is caused by general use but can also build up faster if you are using incorrect fuels such as green wood or treated timbers, so make sure you only burn dry, clean wood to reduce the risk of fire starting from a fireplace or wood heater .

WINTER WARNING: The CFA has provided advice to the community on keeping your heating and chimneys safe during the colder months.

CO Heffernan said it is also important to ensure gas heaters are being used safely and correctly, and urged Victorians to have their gas heaters inspected and serviced by a qualified technician every two years to avoid a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

“The colder months are some of the riskiest times of the year for fires in the home, and most of these fires can be prevented,” he said.

“Taking a few moments to check your heaters and fireplaces before winter sets in could mean the difference

between life and death for your family.

“It’s important to remember that no matter the season, having interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms and living areas can provide vital seconds to allow you and your family to escape in case of a fire.”

The CFA also provided tips to help maintain your chimney and heating in a safe manner.

Have chimneys cleaned annually and gas heaters inspected and serviced every two years.

A secure guard or fireproof screen should always be used to prevent sparks and wood from falling out of the fireplace and causing a fire or burn injury.

FAMILY REUNION: The Forbes family got together on Sunday, May 22 around Neville Forbes’ (driver) 1916 T Model Ford before having a tour around the Nagambie and District Historical Society.

Reunion for well-known Nagambie family

By DIANE GRANT THE name Forbes has been connected to Nagambie since James Forbes and his wife came to live in the area in 1905, over 117 years ago.

In that time, 35 Forbes family members have lived in seven houses in Prentice Street, Nagambie, on 11 properties and four Forbes businesses have operated in Prentice Street also, as well as other businesses in town during that time.

A family reunion was held recently with members of the Forbes family still living in Nagambie and those who could travel to town for the

special occasion.

The reunion was co-organised by Heather Forbes-McKeon from the Mornington Peninsula area and Neville Forbes of Nagambie.

James Forbes had a son Robert, who had a son Vincent who also had a son called Vincent; so James was the Great, Great Grandfather of Heather Forbes.

They have brought up their families in town and their children attended local schools and have been involved in local groups.

On Sunday the reunion folk began their journey down memory lane at the Nagambie and District Historical Society

‘Sund’y by the Sevens’ returns THE Euroa Third Age Club have announced that Greg Dudley’s popular ‘Sund’y by the Sevens’ concerts will be returning.

The upcoming concert will be held on Sunday, June 5 at 1.30pm at the Third Age Club rooms on Kirkland Avenue.

At the concert, local entertainer Greg Dudley will be performing with his long-term song writing and musical collaborator, Rod Grant from Yass in New South Wales.

For many years Rod and Greg have performed their music in clubs, hotels and other venues around Canberra and Southern New South Wales.

They were previously known as a performing duo named ‘Grant n Dudley’.

The Third Age Club said they are honoured to have Rod in Euroa to perform with Greg and have a get together full of fun and music.

On Sunday, Greg and Rod’s show will cover a wide range of musical styles and character, from popular covers, country and Aussie bush music.

Their singing will be accompanied by Rod on the keyboards and Greg playing both guitar and harmonica together with top professionally arranged backings and quality sound gear.

After the half time break, local poet Bernie Walker will entertain with a couple of selected Australian poems.

The Euroa Third Age Club cordially welcomes all to come and join at the event.

Admission is free and refreshments will be on sale during the half time interval.

Bruce’s father Bill had served in the Australian Army in World War One and Bruce and Lindsay had served in World War Two in the Austral-

ian Army.

To complete their historic walk around this part of town, the family meandered down Prentice Street learning about their past generations homes and their part in the Forbes Nagambie history.

The reunion members met up at the Nagambie Rowing Club restaurant for their Saturday night meal and had lots of food for thought and memories to share over the meal.

On the Sunday the family went out to Tahbilk wines for Sunday lunch happy with the reunion that brought many of them back to Nagambie for such a special family weekend.

It was said that it was time for him to pass the baton on.

His successor will have big boots to fill as the Tahbilk winery has had 162 years of operation and enjoyed much success over the journey.

Congratulations Alister on heading this legendary group of Tahbilk businesses so well.

I hope that you will enjoy retirement and that you will have a fitting farewell by the company board and the employees in the not too distant future.

Come along to morning melodies

By DIANE GRANT THE Church of England Mother’s Union began in England 146 years ago to support young mothers and was started by a grandmother Mary Sumner.

Mary Sumner day is observed every August in honour of the founder of this worldwide Anglican organisation devoted to supporting marriage and family life.

The Mother’s Union began in Tasmania over 100 years ago and many parishes started branches across Australia and their Dioceses took it under their wing also.

The Diocese of Wangaratta became a head branch of the Mother’s Union that encompassed branches from across the Diocese 83 years ago.

The Seymour Mother’s Union (MU) branch began in 1959 with Mrs Wiedemann leading the group.

Muriel Andrea, who will turn 96 on June 19, said her mother was a member of the Mother’s Union, and Muriel was one of the 1959 members.

Now Muriel’s daughter Elaine Youngman has been a member for over a year, making it three generations of the family that belonged to the branch.

Over 40 years ago a member of the local group wrote to the Ryder Cheshire Foundation about adopting a leper family in India.

The branch fundraised once a year with a luncheon and guest speaker to raise funds to support this person, their family.

Nagambie had their own MU group led by Dorothy Jory and Avenel a Caritas one.

They merged when the parish became known as Central Goulburn in the early 2000s.

Male members have been welcomed for the past two decades to join this worldwide MU that has over four million members.

Members from Avenel, Nagambie and Seymour will gather together on Thursday, June 23 to celebrate the 63 years of Mother’s Union in our district.

Members of other local churches, local group representatives, family and friends are all invited to the Morning Melodies fundraiser with entertainer Noel Pearson.

The group tried to host the morning last year but COVID-19 put a stop to that.

This year’s fundraiser

will be held in the Anglican Christ Church hall in Seymour starting from 10am with a $10 donation entry fee.

Morning tea, a raffle, lucky door prizes and a trading table will all be available on the day.

Mary Greenshields, current president of the MU branch and a member for nearly 50 years, is calling for supporters of this year’s MU event to support the cause.

The MU branches are only meant to hold one fundraiser a year, this is your local branch’s one.

“The Mother’s Union is looking for new members male or female, single, married, divorced or widowed to carry on this 146 year old tradition of being faithful and spiritual members of the church, and sharing Christ’s love by encouraging, strengthening and supporting marriage and family life,” Ms Greenshields said.

NEW medical staff has arrived at the Nagambie Medical Centre (NMC), ready to start helping the local community.

Dr Atif has been the principal medical provider of the Nagambie Medical Centre country practice for over seven years and has been a strong member of the medical profession in the community and Nagambie Healthcare facilities next door.

He was joined by Dr Nahida Khan in 2016 and they and the centre’s staff have been providing continuity to their clients and service providers that are required in a small country practice.

Dr Abdul Atif and Dr Nahida Khan and the NMC team earlier this year welcomed two new doctors to the community orientated practice, Dr Achini Perera and Dr Muhammad Salman.

They are both currently working part time at the practice.

Dr Atif is planning for the future and this month he has been fortunate to take on another new doctor to his busy practice.

Dr Uzma Saleem started working in the Medical Centre recently and is getting to know the ropes and plans to work part time at the moment.

Each of the professional NMC doctors brings their own expertise, bedside manner and experience to the Nagambie Medical practice.

The fact that our lads never gave up or threw in the towel at any stage of the game was a positive.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB GOLF on Tuesday, May 21 was played under perfect weather conditions, the greens were still a little slick in readiness for the ladies.

Kerry Hewlett has kept her form going winning again with 32points, the winner of the men’s was Richard Hayes with 30 points and it could have been so much better as on his back nine he was sixteen points and slipped the final three holes to not score again, it’s a cruel game.

Thursday saw the Strathbogie Ladies Bowl played in changeable weather, 48 players took cards.

The winner of the Bowl for 2022 was the Kilmore Club; Sophie Bannon was the overall winner with 38 points.

A grade winner was Ruth Worland with 34 points on a countback from Terry O Connor.

B grade winner was Sue Mc Call with 34 points.

C grade winner was Bev Bellman with 37 points on a countback from Julian Chandler who was lucky scoring an Eagle on the third hole, her card showed 2/6, congratulations.

Everyone enjoyed the hot soups when they returned to the clubhouse as the weather conditions were really wet over the last three holes.

Par was played on Saturday 28, May 28 with 15 players taking cards.

It was the final round of the medley; Gary Hewlett was a runway winner by eight strokes.

Euroa Hotel dinner finishing with square.

It was a very wet day but four players managed to brave the conditions and play a round of stableford.

The winner was Harold Rayner with 17 pts.

There were no N/P winners.

With the start of Winter only days away it appeared to arrive early at Nagambie with

a thick dew blanketing the course and cold temperatures throughout the day, mid-week rain once again made for heavy ground conditions and the need for golfers to fly the ball tee to green.

None better at executing such golf was our day’s winner Jeremy Ezard putting together a round of one boogie, two birdies and the rest par’s for a one under par 71 and a total of 37 stableford points, Ezard attributed his good score to driving and putting well.

Runner up was visiting golfer Glen Douglas from Mansfield taking a liking to the Nagambie course on his first visit, managing to compile a very competent 36 points, rounding out the top three a true fighter and scrapper Alby Seenan also returning 36 points.

Runner up was the in-form Prez, Dale Smith, with 37 points.

Drive & Pitch on the 7th went to Tim Batten and the Prez collected the ball for his

shot to the 17th.

The juniors played Saturday morning - thanks to Mark Hannigan for stepping in for Alex Smith who was on the sick list.

Campbell Smith won the scratch with one over and got the Bank Street Pizza voucher for his birdie on the 11th.

Lachie O’Brien was second and Will Lynch was third.

Rayden Hannigan won the handicap on a countback from Kevin Traynor and Ruby Hannigan was third.

We had three teams at the Dalhousie 4BBB stroke event at Lancfield on Sunday and Tim Batten and Mark Hannigan played well to win the B grade nett - well done gents.

Dale Smith’s partner for the day, Ken Whitfort, was unlucky to miss a hole in one when his ball finished within an inch from the hole.

Bad luck Kenny.

Well, after making the finals three times and missing out, our Men’s Pennant team finally managed to collect the winners shield when they defeated Whittlesea, three matches to two at Broadford.

Led by Captain Jared Smith, the team had only lost one game for the season so they were quietly confident going into the final.

Jamison Black won his match three and one and is to be congratulated on his fantastic first season of pennant.

He held his nerve when things got a bit tight and came out with a great victory.

Tim Batten fought valiantly against his opponent, who hit the ball a mile and despite being well down at the turn,

managed to claw a few back, but ended up going down three and two. Unfortunately Adam Harrop had a day to forget; he couldn’t take a trick and went down five and four.

President Dale played well and had his match under control from the outset, and won his match four and three.

Captain Jed also had a great day on the course and never looked under pressure, winning his match five and four.

A fantastic effort by the team and also by the other players who participated during the season, namely Matt Eddy, Justin Bassett, Shane Black, Alex Smith and Willy Wheeler.

Don’t forget the Winter Feast this coming Saturday June 4th. $50 per person will get you a three course meal prepared by our Chef extraordinaire, Justin Bassett. Children are welcome and the cost is $30.

Life Membership awarded to Libby Byrne

By AUDREY MCINTOSH AT a well-attended Annual Meeting held at the clubhouse on Wednesday, May 15, Life Membership was awarded to member Libby Byrne for her dedicated playing and work at the club for a number of years since retiring from full time work.

The highlight this year for Libby was being part of the winning division two midweek pennant side.

Over the years Libby has been in many Championship events at the club and has been representative at Goulburn Valley events.

She has been a very regular player in other clubs tournaments and has been in Goulburn Valley representative sides, as well as a great pennant player and social bower at the Euroa club as well as being the Midweek Tournament secretary.

As well as this, Libby has been Catering organizer for pennant days, tournaments and other social events.

She is a great supporter of members of the club and is always concerned of their welfare, so this has been a well-deserved award, congratulations.

Libby thanked the club for this great honor and will continue to help and support each and every one where possible.

President Neville Harris chaired the annual meeting when reports were given on the finance of the club, this proving it is in a great place, despite the Covid situation through the year not allowing everything to take place as planned.

In presenting his report, Neville thanked all members for their help, whether it was a small or large task.

Income for the club was more than expected with some strong sponsorship, b ar sales, raffle income and the tournaments were well supported.

Bowling each week was consistent and the Midweek pennant division two winning the shield after coming second for some years.

Three weekend and three midweek pennant sides competed again this year with three sides making the finals and all represented themselves well.

The social part of the club is very important, the purchase of heaters and tables and chairs assisted in the running of the social bowls and the meat raffle supported by Balmattum Butchers at a discount price attracted attendance on social occasions.

The business house bowls was again well supported and the greens played on were as good as can be found anywhere.

Catering under Libby Byrne and her band of helpers has kept the eating side of our club in its good reputation, along with Lindsay in charge of the BBQ on special days, the raffle ladies Sandra and Audrey raising funds for our club, and Beth for the contribution of delectable food on special days.

The board operated effortlessly and cooperatively with members

contributing in many ways, Marc as secretary, tony as treasurer, Andy with his grants knowledge, Bill with sponsorship, Don with his ‘get things done’ attitude and Shane for innovative ways to improve the club.

Neville thanked the members for the opportunity to act as President for the 2021/22 season and thanked all for their support.

May 21 was Barry Hatchman, Dot Lomer and may 25 were Tony Kingma, George Andrews and Rhonda Wickson.

Many bowlers will be heading north in the next week or so and we wish them good travelling and bowling and social bowls will continue here if suitable weather continues.

Towners take down Lakers KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN SENIORS IN front of two premiership reunions the Towners duly saluted over Nagambie by 21 points.

On the back of a masterclass performance from Josh Mellington (11 goals), the home team let go a 54-point lead at the final change to hang on and win a great game of football by both sides to the tune of 21 points.

The whole game was played at a high intensity almost like a final, Nagambie were quick and highly skilled, but the return of Nick Brazil helped the Towners to a 19-point lead at quarter time.

Five goals each in the second quarter set up an enthralling battle, the Lakers just would not go away.

The game was seemingly put to bed in the third, six unanswered goals gave the home side a big lead at the last change, but to their credit Nagambie pounced, some nervous moments on the sidelines as the visitors kicked five goals but the deficit was too great with Violet Town running out winners in a crucial win.

Nathan Abley continued his fine form this year down back, marking and kicking like an old veteran, as did his young side kick Jimmy Herring, these lads belie their years the way they play in the back half.

Nick Abley playing wing found form, 28 disposals was his best game of the year and Jack Exell (two goals) just does what Jack does, brilliant across half forward.

Ollie Ford, Lachie Baldwin, and the returning Matt McCarty deserve a special mention, when it needed to be won, these three midfielders stood up to ensure the win.

The “Bull”, “Swannie and “Mower” were just too good over four quarters against the opposition.

The 1982 & 2012 reunion was sensational, still not sure who wins this battle, my tip though would be 2012 pulled up better than 1982 on Sunday!

Euroa Pony Club gymkhana draws strong crowd from all of Victoria THE Euroa Pony club Gymkana was held on Sunday, May 22 at the Euroa showgrounds, with unprecedented numbers of floats rolling through the gates from 7am.

This event is the major fundraiser for Euroa Pony Club for the year.

A lot of effort and work goes into this from all of our members, parents and families.

By holding this large event it enables our club to keep our membership costs to a minimum.

This year we had a new major sponsor being a young local family, N & M Law Transport.

Neal and Megan Law started their business last year going out on their own and it is super to see such a young family succeed in business.

Neal and Megan can often be seen helping out around the club as they have a daughter Darci who is one of our keen members learning and coming up through the ranks.

Without sponsorship like this we as a club would not be able to run an event as big or as elaborate as we did.

So again, thank you to N & M Law Transport.

This year we held open classes, Pony Club classes and a rookie ring.

All three rings were well supported by local and out of town riders.

In the pony club ring, there was certainly an array of different pony club colours from all over Victoria.

We also held a freshman’s show jumping ring which was also very well supported.

Heights started with poles on the ground and went up to 90cm throughout the day.

This is a chance for local and out of town riders to bring young horses out and about in a low-key jumping environment.

The club always runs a very successful fun raffle on the day with numerous prizes.

This year our raffle was sponsored by Saunders Firewood Benalla, Schwarz Bulk Haulage, Hunters Euroa and Your Sold Real Estate Shepparton along with others.

This is drawn at lunchtime with a very keen crowd purchasing tickets to get something off the raffle table.

Presentations at the end of the day were held in the middle of the arena alongside the N & M Law Transport Truck.

There are two major presentations at the end of the day, the first being the Junior Highpoint award which is the “Roy Seach Memorial Trophy”.

This is donated every year by the Seach family to honour Roy’s Memory.

This year it was won by Emily Walker and her trusty steed Riley.

SMILES ALL ROUND: The Annual Euroa Pony Club Gymkhana is a great event for young and green horses and children to gain experience in a competition environment.

Towners fight hard against strong Nagambie Lakers A GRADE IT was set to be a great match of netball and important for both sides.

Kolby, Courtney and Steph worked together well in defence to win some great turnovers, but unfortunately the shooters could not convert, allowing Nagambie to get the ball back and capitalise. Violet Town’s shooters in the second quarter found their groove and start sinking some shots with some good movement down the court and supply from the mid courters allowed Violet Town to improve on their first quarter.

Third quarter saw some interruption in play, an injury to a Nagambie player, and Nagambie responded, lifting and making it hard for Violet Town to match.

Violet Town threw the ball away in attack and the shooters missed a few shots which allowed Nagambie to get the momentum back.

Nagambie’s shooters were starting to get on top of VT’s defence end and shooting accurately.

This was when the game was lost.

Violet Town were also missing a few players out with illness, but girls fought hard all game, but Nagambie walked away with the win.

Final scores VT 45 def by 59. No awards given out this week.

VT Netball Good Sports Award: Steph Hayes - for playing B grade, then stepping on court to play A grade.

Following that, she jumped into the canteen for a duty and assisted in the clean-up of the canteen at the end of the day.

B GRADE VIOLET Town’s defenders started off strong making Nagambie’s shooters work hard for it.

Teagan Kubeil worked well in the goal ring being the dominant shooter.

Great talking in the third quarter saw a massive improvement from a quiet first and second quarter with the defence strong all game.

Unfortunately, Violet Town was unable to capitalise on any turnover ball, turning it over and Nagambie didn’t

allow Violet Town to get the ball back.

In the last quarter, there was some great passages of play bringing the ball from defence to attack. VT kept their heads up all game, but it just was Violet Town’s Day. Final scores VT 13 def by Nagambie 62. Best On Court Teagan Kubeil, Second Best Chelsea Sessions.

C GRADE VT started out strong with great intensity finishing off the quarter 4-19.

Lauren came on in the second quarter providing great height.

Boxing out was on fire by both defenders Bri and Lauren, while Tegan was a pocket rocket down through the mid court.

Unfortunately, the turnovers were not converted and Nagambie where able to keep their 15-goal lead.

In the second half, Violet Town’s defenders once again went out hard.

Erin was having an amazing game, supporting and encouraging her team.

Steph and Tegan made some great leads down the middle, chasing up lots of loose balls and fighting hard.

The last quarter saw a few changes, and although fighting hard until the end the girls went down but are to be commended for their fight until the end.

Final scores VT 12 def by Nagambie 49. Best On Court Erin Dawson, Second Best Steph Dearnaley.

15 & UNDER THE girls started off the game with great enthusiasm and energy.

The defenders did their best against Nagambie’s tall shooters, they were able to tap the ball away and make a few intercepts.

However, those gains were not converted as the girls rushed the ball through the mid court into attack, creating turnovers.

After half time, the players chased the loose balls more often, but still struggled to get the ball down to the shooters.

The team kept their head up through the game and tried their best.

Final scores VT 8 def by Nagambie 51. Awards went to Belle Young & Alexis Kloot.

Lots to look forward to for Longwood LONGWOOD FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB A GRADE A GRADE had a tough battle this week against Shep East.

The first quarter was not as competitive as the Redlegs had hoped, creating a significant early lead for Shep East, that would prove challenging to come back from.

Great determination in the second, third and fourth by Longwood showed that we can maintain a consistent pressure, and gave us plenty of insight on what we need to work on going forward.

Best on to the relentless defence of Kristy Bennett, and coaches to the visionary passing from Stevie Dickman.

B GRADE We knew we had a battle ahead of us versing top side

Shepp East with a couple of key players out; but after coming off a great win last week we were determined to keep that momentum rolling.

Welcome back Maddi who returned this round after weeks off due to injury and made her presence known on court.

Our defence applied plenty of pressure which we saw rewarded with some great turnovers throughout the game.

The midcourt worked tirelessly to bring the ball down to our shooters who had a tough fight against tall defence but managed to slot some lovely goals.

A huge effort by the Redlegs who kept their heads up and fought hard to the final whistle.

Coaches Award: Maddi Milne C GRADE WE were very proud of the C grade ladies, they fought hard for all four quarters, the defence was on so strong, getting lots of rebounds and intercepts, but we struggled to get it down the mid court and reward with our goals.

But we fought hard and kept Shepp East to under 10 goals a quarter.

Coaches award went to Poss who did amazing leading forward and a strong voice on the court, best on goes to Lisa Morey for her amazing energy and her fantastic effort in reading the ball, getting her hand to lots of intercepts.

UNDER 17 THE 17’s have finally started to gel together, although the score did not show that,

everyone on the side lines noticed it.

Millie Delahey took my BOC, she had hands to every ball, and she read all the plays coming down the caught to pick them off, and pushed through the whole game.

I can’t wait to see her future at Longwood and watch her play senior netball.

Beth Pellegrino took my coaches, she had played a whole game in 15s and then a whole game for 17s and still contested for every ball, Beth and Millie were a power couple.

UNDER 15 THE U15s continue to take the court with a positive attitude every week.

The score board really does not reflect the defensive pressure they applied to the ball this week.

Euroa dominate Mansfield Red in winter tennis competition

By RHONDA CARPENTER IN glorious sunshine Mansfield Black hosted Mansfield Blue last Monday.

In an engaging contest both opening sets were tight.

Black’s Anna Speirs and Jenny Bell secured theirs 8-6 over Blue’s Michelle Pigdon and Belinda Cipa.

Blue’s Clare Beecham and Sophie Yencken raced away to 5-2 lead when their opponents.

Rhonda Carpenter and Di Bergelin dug in, equalled at five all, and pushed them to the tiebreak. Blue steadied holding firm for a comfortable 7-2 tiebreak win.

The next sets were equally competitive with Anna and Rhonda taking theirs 8-4, and Belinda and Sophie winning 8-5.

Two sets each and only two games separating the teams going into the final pairings, the result would come down to the wire.

Jenny and Rhonda asserted their authority with an emphatic 8-0 win, then watched the other pairings tussle it out.

Michelle and Sophie won 8-4 for Blue in a highquality contest.

Black and Blue shared the sets three all, but Black won, 40 games to 34.

There was plenty of food to share, including Blue’s bonus offerings.

Belinda had made a beautiful carrot cake to celebrate her last match before heading north.

Multiple conversations crossed the clubhouse table as teams sorted players for the following week and socialised.

Claire Sharp, Kate Campbell, Maureen Jewell, and Wendy Maxwell won every set, 48 games to 15 and regained their top spot on the ladder.

Equally Euroa staked their claim with a convincing win over Mansfield Red winning 48 games to 12.

Both sides used five players with Euroa’s Chris Ellis, Sue Vaughan, Lyn Pierce, including Robyn Johnson and Mary Dewis into the line-up.

When Red needed to

replace an injured player, Mary Kelly kindly stepped in to help them out.

She combined with Karyn Fraser and the very determined pair took their set to a tiebreak in Red’s best result for the day.

A massive thanks go to the bye team Moglonemby, who helped out three other teams which was very much appreciated by everyone.

This season, to increase the number of women playing, teams can use five players in the home and away rounds, with

two players sharing the three sets.

Any replacement must be a financial member of a club and must become financial with EDLWTA after three matches.

In addition, the bye team can be a source of fill-ins, and some teams have extra players available.

Captains can help.

After the third round Benalla sit on top of the ladder on 26 points, then Euroa 21, Terip 17, Mansfield Blue 14, Mansfield Black 8, Moglonemby 4 and Mansfield Red 0.

BOC went to Larni Shiner who was such a strong voice on the court for our defensive and attacking end.

She was everywhere the girls needed her to be all game.

Coaches went to our vicecaptain Bella Trait.

Bell had a rough first quarter, was getting pushed around unfairly and lost all her confidence.

With a bit of team encouragement Bell was able to again find her rhythm and shot some amazing goals.

UNDER 13 THIS week the U13s netballer’s faced yet another tough game.

The girls’ passion, determination and resilience is just amazing to see.

There is amazing talent being created in these young players and it’s amazing to

see each and every week.

Best on this week went to Allira Cummins, she had her hands to amazing intercepts in defence and then had done an amazing job in a new attacking position and helped the girls set up for goals.

Our coaches award this week went to Jayda Webber, she showed us this week that even when the score board isn’t in our favour that we don’t give up and had some amazing encouraging words and a directional voice down the court.

Marlee Galvin also scored an award for being an amazing little all-rounder.

The future of our club is looking amazing from these little Leggers.

Under 11 netballers fly high in Shepp comp UNDER 11 NETBALL - EUROA WHITE Shepparton Netball Association Euroa White Vs Guthrie Street IT was a cold, foggy start to the day for players and families in Shepparton.

Regardless, spirits were high as the girls anticipated their first game in a new division, with high hopes for a win against Guthrie Street.

The girls started the game with confidence and an early goal from Tully Watson in GA had them off to a great start.

Some excellent defence was seen across the board and Bridie Simpson, Isla Moore and Daisy Cameron all turned over the ball with some impressive intercepts.

The defensive team of Adelaide Downie, Daisy and Chloe Squires worked hard to keep the opposition to zero goals in the first quarter, 3-0 The second quarter saw Leila Thompson and Brianna Maher enter the game and started in much the same fashion as the first quarter, with another confident goal from Tully.

More excellent defensive work from the girls created many opportunities for our team as the ball was turned over.

Brianna could be seen working hard in WD with strong hands and providing some good intercepts.

We went in to half time after seeing possibly the best passage of play this season.

Perfect, strong passes from one end to the other, 4-0 After making the transition from defence to attack, Daisy provided the first goal of the second half, ably assisted by Adelaide in GS and Zara Hill in WA. Multiple beautiful intercepts were provided by Isla Moore as she worked tirelessly in C. Defence and intercepts across the board continued to be excellent throughout the quarter and we saw Adelaide shoot her first goal of the season. Well done, 7-0 The fourth quarter was great to watch.

The girls have gained so much confidence and we were treated to seeing some excellent passages of play.

Leila was able to stick beautifully to her player in GD and pull in some excellent intercepts that then allowed some beautifully accurate shooting to be displayed by Brianna and Isla up the other end.

What an excellent whole team effort, a win fantastic win.

THE sun was trying its best to break through the pea soup conditions which greeted the girls in Shepparton for their match against St Brendan’s.

Burton was captain for the day and started by losing the toss.

Thankfully some great defence from Robinson and Eddy the Euroa girls were able to get the break and hit the scoreboard first.

A solid effort by the entire team saw Euroa have a lead of five at the first break.

The second quarter started with some mid court and forward line changes and saw Hill come into centre and Hahnel into the goals.

Euroa were doing a great job of getting the ball into the goalers but were unable to convert as easily as they did in the first quarter.

By half time the Euroa girls held the lead 7 to 2.

The start of the third quarter saw the emergence of the sun and allowing the Euroa girls to further shine. Robinson and Eddy were once again combining well in defence.

Transition through the mid court was Euroa’s biggest challenge but when it did get it into the goals Saxon was able to convert.

Going into the final quarter Euroa once again had a five goal lead.

In the last quarter Wilson provided some fresh legs and driver through the midcourt.

Timperley was feeding beautifully into the Saxon and Burton combination in goals (making their mothers proud).

Final scores saw the Euroa girls come away victorious 13 to 6.

GVL goes down swinging Goulburn Valleyy lose border battle to Ovens and Murrayy at the weekend’s interleague g THE Goulburn Valley League was outgunned by the Ovens and Murray League’s firepower in Saturday’s interleague clash at Mooroopna.

O&M kicked an impressive 18.11 (119) to GV’s 9.10 (64) to take the win and retain the Ash-Wilson trophy in a match that felt closer than the scoreboard showed.

O&M’s midfielder Joe Richards from Wangaratta was awarded best on ground, with co-star Leigh Williams bagging five majors up forward.

“I would have thought they’re the number one country footy league, so it’s always good to test yourselves against them to see where you’re at as players and a league.

“Having the Mansfield boys playing was awesome.

“Jack (Hutchins) did his usual thing and played really well down back, he was really strong in defence.

“Patty (Marks) did well down there too; he was meant to be on the wing but got thrown back and did a really good job.

“It’s just a good experience to expose you to a higher level, representing not only the league but Mansfield as well.

“The Eagles have started our season well, so this helps to build that confidence and hopefully spurs on a few of the younger kids to play interleague in the next couple of years.
