POPULAR SWIMMING HOLE OFF LIMITS DUE TO BLUE-GREEN ALGAE BLOOM IT may have been the place to be for hundreds of people on New Year’s Day (pictured), and thousands more over the summer holidays, but a blue-green algae bloom currently has the Harrietville Dredge Hole unsafe for swimming. Alpine Shire Council has advised that algae levels at the dredge hole are very high, and it is likely to be some weeks before levels are low enough for safe swimming.  Full story inside on page 3. COVID cuts staff Businesses b battling g through g workforce f absenteeism b

By MARTIN DAVIS mdavis@nemedia.com.au

SMALL businesses in the Alpine Shire are struggling with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff availability and restrictions on density limits for hospitality venues has seen many local

businesses close for days at a time, according to Bright Chamber of Commerce president Rupert Shaw. “COVID is having a big impact on businesses,” he told the Alpine Observer. “It’s getting to a stage

where there are only two cafes open at any one time which isn't substantial in this town. “Customers are getting annoyed as they don’t understand why they can’t sit down when there are tables free but those ta-

bles can’t be used because of the limited amount of people able to be at the shop.” Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce president Glenys Peacock said while the the town was being impacted by COVID-19,

most businesses are trying to hold on to regular trading hours. She said part of the casual workforce is out because they have caught COVID or are close contacts. “Keep supporting the locals businesses while they

are going through these times,” she implored. Both chamber presidents are urging the public to be patient and respectful to businesses as they manage these tough times. Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas is making a similar plea. ■ Further story page 3.
