Mystic Park risks closure ACP says y p park mayy close,, but council,, chamber,, cycling y g club committed to solutions By BRODIE EVERIST BRIGHT’S Mystic Park may close in the coming months due to financial pressures and increased demand on the popular mountain biking park, according to the Alpine Community Plantation (ACP) board which manages the facilities. ACP said the cost of maintaining and operating the park through the 2023 financial year is forecast to significantly exceed generated revenue, meaning signage and maintenance work won’t be funded without further investment. These pressures may result in partial or complete closures to Mystic Park and associated mountain bike trails over the next few months. According to ACP, the summer of 2021-22 delivered more park visitors than any previous year, significantly increasing demands on the park. ACP said they are currently investigating alternate funding models, including a ‘Pay to Play’ model. Mystic Park is situated on private land primarily managed for commercial timber production, and community access to the plantations is made possible through the goodwill of HVP, which has contributed significantly over the years. ACP comprises representatives from HVP, Alpine Shire Council, Alpine Cycling Club, Bright and District Chamber of Commerce and the North East Victoria Hang Gliding Club. Alpine Shire mayor Sarah Nicholas said council is working collaboratively with ACP to find a solution for the park’s challenges. “We don’t want to see Mystic Park permanently closed,” she said. “We’re confident there is a way to address these challenges in the short term, and a longer-term approach that will meet the needs of our

community, visitors, HVP and ACP. “We are working with ACP to address current risks and investigate a more sustainable model of management. “We will provide a staffing resource to work with key stakeholders to investigate a viable way forward and work through these challenges.” The Bright and District Chamber of Commerce, which has a seat on the ACP board, said they are committed to ensuring Mystic Park remains open. “We appreciate HVP’s willingness to open up the plantation for mountain biking for our community and enabling Mystic to grow into such a valuable asset to our town,” chamber treasurer and ACP board member Ally Wilson said. “Mystic Park is vital to Bright’s prosperity, and we are firmly committed to ensuring it remains open for both locals and visitors,” she said. “We are absolutely committed to assisting HVP, ACP and the Alpine Shire Council to create a sustainable business model for Mystic Park, and to ensure a positive solution is found. “We see this as an opportunity to create a new model for Mystic Park that will see it become a sustainable and successful operation, ensuring its long-term success.” Alpine Cycling Club president Peter Berlowitz said the club was going to present an action plan to the ACP board on Monday night to stop the park closure. He did not provide details of the plan, but said its purpose was to quickly confirm the park’s management issues and what could be done to fix them. Mr Berlowitz confirmed the park had seen an influx of visitors in the past year due to travel restrictions. “As soon as everything opened up, everyone seemed to come to Bright,” he said.
