AFTER a long wait, the Wandiligong Preservation Society celebrated a new $21,000 footbridge over Growlers Creek on Sunday with an official opening ceremony to mark the occasion.

The group received the funding from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) through its bushfire recovery fund.

Society president Robyn Wood said despite the bad weather it was great to see a strong turnout of people join in the celebrations.

“We had a happy gathering of people and the bridge looks fabulous,” she said.

“I spoke briefly about how the diggings and walking tracks and bridges had developed and how it was so nice to see such a sturdy

unusable place, and were determined to make it into a nice, passive recreational area for the future.

“That’s what we’ve got now with support along the way from so many people, lots of volunteers and various funding.

“We’re not finished yet though, there’s always ongoing work with servicing the tracks, and I’d love to see part of the track accessible

and handsome bridge over Growlers Creek.

“So many people use this area and it’s very loved by the community.

“I always see families out and about and visitors come out to see the Chinese bridge which is 20 years old this year.

“About 40 years ago a group of people rescued that area of Wandi from being a weedy, rocky, derelict,

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, openers Daniel Saville and Patrick Dodd had the runs flowing with a 36 run partnership before Dodd departed for 22 runs.

Ross Wilson stuck around and carved 40 from 66 rocks to anchor the innings, with solid contributions coming from the Power’s middle order, as the total crept higher and higher.

Captain Daniel Saville said given the challenging deck, he was happy setting the Miners 190 for victory.

“The top seven made double figures, with a couple of lower order knocks as well,” he said.

“It’s a focus for us to keep wickets in hand, to try and value your wicket, partnership batting is the key.

“There were no superstar knocks, it wasn’t the easiest wicket to bat on, you had to do a bit of hard work – it was no fun and games in terms of pace and bounce, so I think 190 (to win) was a good score.

“It wasn’t the free-flowing cricket we normally play, but 190 runs on the board, I was pretty happy with that.”

Cruising cats criticised MYRTLEFORD locals are angry over wandering domestic cats entering their properties and causing a nuisance, with concerns raised over noise and environmental impact.

It’s a particular problem for local resident Fiona Chambers as her daughter has a cat allergy, and the audacious cats that sit on her veranda seats render them a no-go zone unless they are cleaned.

Not only that, Ms Chambers has also had a cat sneak through a dog flap

in her door in the dead of night last October.

“I’ve had a cat in my house at half past three in the morning chasing my caged bird,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Chambers said six months ago one of her pet chooks died of a suspected cat scratch days after she had seen a cat stalking it.

According to the Alpine Shire Council’s Domestic Animal Management Policy 2022-2026, they can provide residents with cages for

trapping nuisance cats.

The council policy also states that residents who repeatedly have roaming cats or dogs will be issued with an infringement and must pay the relevant pound release fees.

However, for Ms Chambers, a cat trap wasn’t much use.

“I caught a cat, gave it to the rangers, they took it home,” she said.

“I don’t know what they said or did with the neighbours, but the cat still

“There’s clear benefits for the health of the cat if you contain them.

Students celebrate amid looming exams

YEAR 12 students across the shire celebrated their last days at secondary school last week with shenanigans and fun, but also tinged with the nerves of preparing for their exams.

Marian College year 12 students had their last days on Monday and Tuesday, dressing up as prisoners on the Tuesday.

Despite the fun, Marian College year 12 student Charlee Laird was nervous for her practical Drama exam last Tuesday, as it was taking place that afternoon.

She said her seven-minute solo performance would consist of multiple characters, including Professor Trelawney and Rita Skeeter (from the Harry Potter book and film series) and a man who discovered the teabag.

She was to travel to Wodonga Secondary School that day to perform before an examination panel in the culmination of months of work.

“All of the work bubbles down

“It’s really nerve-wracking.”

Drama students must also complete a written examination, including answering questions on prescribed plays and providing a response to supplied material, such as a script or illustrations.

That week Marian College Year 12 students were to attend a final assembly and morning tea, followed by a graduation mass and dinner.

“For students embarking upon exams, we wish them all the very best in the weeks ahead,” principal Cath Watter said.

“For those who are completing final assessments before embarking on further training or employment, we share with them the sense of excitement for the future possibilities.”

Over at Bright P-12 College, year 12 students were celebrating their last day dressing up as spies,

while teachers were dressed as villains, including one teacher as the joker and another as a gangster.

They were enjoying a barbecue breakfast that morning, while school captain Zoe Ditcham said they were going to play some soccer down ball, a game of dodgeball and a game of soccer against the teachers before the big walk out of school.

But after that they didn’t have

much time to celebrate with the English exam looming that Tuesday.

Zoe said she needed a 25 study score in English to get into her desired course on finance and accounting at La Trobe University, so she had been studying hard.

“I’ve been doing a lot of essay writing,” she said.

“Getting practice prompts and writing practice essays and taking them to Mrs Lewis.”

Lions recognise long-time cemetery supporter LOCAL identity Marilyn Stephens was awarded the Max McGillivray Award earlier this month in recognition of her long work with the Bright Public Cemetery Trust and broad community involvement.

According to Lions member Jennifer Sgambelloni, Mrs Stephens was invited to attend the Lions dinner on October 17 as a guest speaker, but unbeknown to her, she was also to be presented with this year’s award after a unanimous decision by the selection panel.

Ms Sgambelloni said during her entertaining and informative speech, Mrs Stephens shared a snapshot of the cemetery’s history, recounted her many years as secretary of the Bright Cemetery Trust, and went on to give an interesting glimpse into what is required in running the cemetery.

According to Ms Sgambel-

loni, during Mrs Stephens’ time as a trust member and secretary she has far exceeded the requirements of the voluntary position.

“For the entire 30 plus years she has been involved with the trust, she continues to assist families not only in the initial stages of their loved one’s internment and time of great sadness, but she will also follow up weeks and months later to ensure families are coping as well as could be expected in such difficult circumstances,” Ms Sgambelloni said.

“She ensures that at Christmas, Easter and Mother’s and Father’s days, the gate is open so the families of loved ones can enter with ease, returning in the evening to close them again.”

According to Ms Sgambelloni, Mrs Stephens was also a Sunday school teacher for the Uniting Church through-

The perpetual award, presented in memory of shire councillor and community member Max McGillivray, consists of a personal plaque and $1000 for donation to a charity of the recipient’s choice.

It was established by the Lions Club of Bright to recognise and celebrate the exceptional humanitarian contribution of an individual within the community, and is presented to the recipient by a representative of the McGillivray family.

Teamwork recycles blister packs

By NATHAN DE VRIES THE Myrtleford Bowls Club and Bendigo Bank are teaming up to recycle thousands of discarded blister packs otherwise destined for landfill.

Blister packs, or the preformed plastic packaging medical pills come in, are difficult to recycle due to their composition of pressed aluminium and plastic.

Four collection points will be set up across the Alpine Shire, with boxes at the Myrtleford Bowls Club, Jo Ross Jackson Hearing Centre in Clyde Street, Myrtleford, Bendigo Bank in Bright and the Bright Pharmacy.

Club member Jeff Stagg was the driving force behind the program, who researched possible recycling options after bringing in shoeboxes to social bowls nights, which would be full of blister packs before the end of the day.

Myrtleford Bowls Club president Lance Symons said the boxes will have a real impact on the amount of blister packs ending up in landfill.

“People are collecting bat-

teries, people are collecting cartridges and all sorts of other things but not blister packs,” Mr Symons said.

“Every Wednesday we play social bowls, he (Stagg) brings in a new shoebox and it’s filled up by the end of the day – that’s only coming from the members.

“Each of these boxes that

they supply holds 4300 empty blister packs, so we’d be getting rid of 16,000 blister packs out of landfill just in the first initiative, it’d be fantastic.

“This is not just for club members, this is for the broader community in total to assist the environment.

“We’re ever so grateful the

Bendigo Bank manager Mark Ditcham said they were happy to be part of the program.

“It’s a great initiative – like anything that’s environmentally beneficial, we’re definitely happy to be involved in it, that’s for sure,” he said.

“I’d say there’s a real need, with all those blister packs that you get nowadays.

“If it’s really well utilised and we need more points, we’ll definitely look at supplying more boxes throughout the Shire.”

Mr Symons said TerraCycle would pay for postage of the boxes to be returned, and the blister packs recycled.

“We made some further inquiries, and we found a recycling company that recycles them and turns them into bollards and other useful things in the community and keeps them out of rubbish and landfill,” he said.

“Having got in touch with them, the only problem is they charge you about $221 for each box – they’ll send you the box prepaid and you can set them up at a collection point.

“When you fill them up you send them back, and that postage is paid as well, so you’re basically paying for the recycling process and all that.

“I approached the Bendigo Bank and they’ve come back to us and they’re very happy to sponsor the first four boxes of that, and if it

After putting a callout to locals on the local Facebook pages, dog owner Marisa Spiller said she was grateful to the community for telling her of the sightings across town and locals rallying to find him.

“Both the Harrietville and the Bright community, they just mobilised,” she said.

“They were determined to find this little dog.”

The 8-year-old dog, Remy, went missing after leaping out of Ms Spiller’s car at a Bright service station last Tuesday and scarpering.

“He just bolted – it was so out of character for him,” Ms Spiller said.

“I think he was just trying to get back to Harrietville.”

A friend suggested Ms Spiller tell people of her missing dog by posting to the local Fa-

cebook community pages, and after she did, there was a “tremendous outpouring” of support and reports of sightings.

The dog was found on Thursday after a sighting near the Bright hospital, with the dog reportedly heading to Pioneer Park.

Ms Spiller told the Facebook groups, and by the time she had driven from Harrietville she said there were locals at the park searching for the dog.

According to Ms Spiller, a lady told her Remy had likely sought the nearby creek where it was quiet.

“I went down this track and there he was - It was just amazing,” Ms Spiller said.

According to sightings, Remy must’ve trekked across town, with reports of the terrier seen near Woolworths, Ashwood Avenue, Back Germantown Road and Centenary Park.

“His paws are a little bit tender,” Ms Spiller said on Friday.

“He’ll head to the vet sometime today and we’ll get him checked out.”

Zero waste goal for local market

BRIGHT’S Make it Bake it Grow it Market has been keeping an eye on their waste footprint and aim to keep reducing it in any way they can.

Market manager Amanda Hore said the recent market saw nearly 100 litres of waste saved from ending up in landfill.

“Most of the packaging that the stallholders give to customers is recyclable or compostable,” she said.

“Until now the compostable items would go to landfill.

“At the October Market, with the support of Alpine Shire Council we piloted a Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) Service.

“We had a green bin where compostable items go, which will get collected as part of council’s weekly green bin service.

“With the help of volunteers, Bruce Hore, Rachel Campbell and Michelle Dodd, they guided the customers through putting their rubbish into the correct bin.

“We kept nearly 100litres of waste from going to landfill and educated everyone that the tops of coffee cups can be recycled.

“Plasticwise Bright have run the Dish Pig at the markets for nearly six months and offer cups for your coffee that are then washed in a commercial dishwasher on site .

“Recently they have also

been offering bowls for the dutch pancakes.

“At the market on October 21, 135 bowls and 223 mugs were used and then washed up.

“The stallholders used the bins for their organic items including the bacon offcuts and egg shells from the Rotary barbecue and lots of paper towels.

“SixPence Coffee already offer their coffee grounds for compost, Glen and Anthea from Woodlands Gourmet Mushrooms were very happy to get their bag of coffee grounds on Saturday.

Amanda said she was very happy with the trial and looked forward to continuing this service, making the market a close to zero waste as possible.

I REFER to the Myrtleford Times article ‘Bright RSL 100th anniversary celebrations continue’ of 20 September 2023.

I was disappointed to read NE Media’s report about Alpine Shire councillors deciding to allow a freedom of the city march in Bright on Saturday 28 October 2023 to proceed,

despite advice from council’s own events coordinator that it would clash with the Myrtleford Show - the only agricultural show in the shire.

Most would be aware that the dates for agricultural shows are set more than a year in advance, they require months of planning and are successfully conducted often as a result of thousands of volunteer hours by local community members.

Most would also know that

agricultural shows across Australia need all the support they can get.

In the case of the planned freedom of the city march in Bright, it’s not an annual event and it does not possess the associated fixed dependencies of the Myrtleford Show.

Councillors had the opportunity to set a date either side of 28 October but chose not to.

Fair crowd enjoy Whorouly DESPITE the cold, the clouds and the drizzle, stallholders and visitors turned out in force to attend Sunday’s resurrected Whorouly Village Fair, last held in 2019.

Fair coordinator Jennifer Garrett said stallholder numbers were up and visitor numbers were understandably slightly down, but most people had a wonderful day.

“One visitor was overheard to say it was one of the best markets they had been to in a long time,” Ms Garrett explained.

Stallholders were also delighted, including Hopeless Wanderer, which was selling candles, room spray and t-shirts and put the following comment on Facebook.

“We had an amazing day for our first ever market. Everybody was so kind and the local support was second to none. Love living in this region and we will certainly be at the next village fair.”

Best of all, Ms Garrett said, the fair showcased what Whorouly has to offer, and the community came together to raise money for their various clubs and organisations, to support other community members and just to socialise.

This year’s village fair also hosted a Pitcher This! event run by the Rural City of Wangaratta.

The crowd voted for their favourite projects, as pitched for by local organisations, and Whorouly Primary School took out first prize of $1000 to purchase Lego Masters, where Lego can be programmed (using cod-

On the Home Front, an original play

by Pieta Swann, is about the experiences of three Australian women as their loved ones serve during WWI. After Pieta extensively researched historical newspaper reports, songs, letters and poems, the play reflects upon the start of the Great War in 1914 to the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 when the ANZAC legend was formed.

The performance presents history in a dynamic way through the intermingling of historical facts, personal stories and engaging performers.

Another big event celebrating the 100th anniversary this weekend will include the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse (PWLH) Regiment parading through Bright CBD. The 4th/19th (PWLH) has a long history with a close connection to the Alpine Shire and surrounds and was deployed in the Alpine region during the 2019/2020 bushfires.

The recommendation advised that the planned parade route will take place in the CBD of Bright and road closures will be required for Park Street, Bakers Gully Road and Ireland Street.

Parking will be restricted in Ireland Street from approximately 6am to 12pm on the day of the parade.

The performance of On the Home Front will be held at the Bright Courthouse Theatre on Saturday, October 28 with a matinee at 3pm and a second performance at 8pm.

I’ve been living here for about 5-6 years now.

What do you do for a living?

I work at the brewery. It’s a great place to work. People are really nice there.

What do you like about the area?

I like how outdoorsy it is. I like how you’re very accessible to everything and there’s a lot at the table for people to enjoy.

Where would you take visitors to showcase the area?

It depends on what sports they’re into.

There’s lots of mountain biking opportunities, like Mystic Mountain Bike Park.

There’s the river, which is really nice to swim in the summer. There are also a lot of nice cafes. So I’d definitely just take them for a tour all around the town.

Is there anything you would change about the area?

Not really, to be honest. It’s a really nice place.

How long have you been living in the area?

My journey to Australia began in June 2022 when I arrived from Nepal. Before moving to Myrtleford in January, I spent six months residing in Melbourne. As of now, I have been living in Myrtleford for a total of 10 months. This duration in Myrtleford has allowed me to become more acquainted with the local area and the community. I’ve had the opportunity to explore the unique features and attractions the region offers.

What do you do for a living?

I am working as a graduate

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love cycling, camping, hiking, and playing pool. I am also an avid sports enthusiast and enjoy attending local football and soccer matches.

What I particularly like about this area is its natural beauty and the distinct four seasons it offers, especially the autumn. Additionally, the warm and welcoming nature of the local residents is something I truly cherish about this place.

Where would you take visitors to showcase the area?

Usually, I like to begin with a trip to Lake Buffalo, followed by a visit to the Reform Hill lookout.

One of the beautiful aspects of the area that never fails to fascinate me is the presence of local wineries.

So, obviously, wrap up our day with a wine tasting and a delightful dinner.

For those with a penchant for camping, I always ensure to include a visit to Nug Nug in our itinerary.

Is there anything you would change about the area?

The area has limited gym facilities.

It would be really great if it could provide more gym facilities and operate on additional days.

Taking the heat off summer

By KITTY VIGO, President of the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre board of governance THE Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast of a hot, dry summer has led three Upper Kiewa Valley community organisations to make their premises available as cool “heat-escape” places for local community members over summer.

The Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre, Mount Beauty Men’s Shed and Alpine U3A are working with other local community services to ensure that people feeling the heat of summer or have limited ways of cooling their homes and are feeling isolated because they don’t want to venture outside during heatwave days, have a place to find relief.

The venues will be open between 11am and 6pm on designated heat relief days and will operate from midNovember as required.

Neighbourhood Centre manager Trish Dixon said that centre staff discussions raised concerns about high summer heat predictions and how locals might cope.

A Heatwave Pilot Project planning group was formed in late September to explore community-led relief strategies.

The planning group includes representatives from the Men’s Shed, Alpine U3A, Alpine FM, Alpine Health, Alpine Shire, Upper Kiewa Valley Support Services and Tawonga Red Cross.

“One of the things we learned from COVID that people can suffer from isolation and we thought the same thing might happen if people don’t leave their

homes over longer periods of days because of heat.”

Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre, Men’s Shed and U3A (at the Seniors Citizens’ Centre) will open their premises to people seeking heatwave relief by providing them with a cool space where they can talk with friends and get light meals and entertainment during the hottest hours of the day.

Each of these venues are

spaces where many locals already regularly meet and feel comfortable.

The heat relief spaces will be opened in response to Bureau of Meteorology announcements about projected heatwave periods and Alpine Shire announcements of Heat Health days which occur on days of extreme temperatures.

“We are not like a lot of bigger towns which have

a range of places such as shopping malls and cinemas where people can go to get cool, but we do have a supportive community organisations willing to open their doors to provide heat relief,” Ms Dixon said.

The project is being coordinated by the Neighbourhood Centre but each of the venues will be managed by their respective organisations.

Light meals and refreshments will be prepared by the centre in its recently refurbished kitchen and daily activities will be organised by the other venues.

Project organisers are inviting other community members to volunteer to help run the project.

“Naturally we will be calling on our own pool of volunteers to help, but it would be wonderful if other community members would be willing to help out as well.

We will need help with organising activities, refreshments and transporting friends to and from the venues,” Ms Dixon said.

She said that one important way that locals can help is by letting their neighbours know that they will be able to take advantage of the heatwave relief being offered and help to transport to the cool spaces and bring them back home at the end of the day.

Information about the Heatwave Pilot Project will be distributed at the Neighbourhood Centre’s next Community Resilience Picnic to be held on November 4 next to the Mount Beauty CFA station.

The project will also be widely promoted by Alpine FM and social media throughout the Upper Kiewa Valley from mid-November.

The Community Resilience Picnic and the Pilot Heatwave Project are supported by a three-year community resilience grant from FRRR.

“We’re hoping to be able to get a relationship with farmers across the Myrtleford area, and Whorouly and Bright to be able to grow the fund so we can spend the money locally,” she said.

Ms Carroll said donations can quickly add up to a significant amount for local causes.

The fund was initially launched at a 2021 cattle sale, where cash donations and the donation of five cattle resulted in $12,000 raised for GROW Myrtleford+.

“It’s fantastic to have support from the community who can contribute on regular basis,” she said.

Committee chair Fiona Nicholls said the group had received great support from cattle sales before.

“Raising money in the community enables us to

give back to the community for activities and benefits for them,” she said.

To further raise funds, GROW Myrtleford+ is also launching its highly anticipated holiday wine promotion just in time for the festive season.

THERE was a buzz around the stadium in Mount Beauty last Friday, a large crowd gathered to see and hear two very important messages.

The TREK (Towards Renewable Energy Kiewa) team were there to unveil the battery that is now in use after the installation of solar panels on the stadium roof.

TREK was successful in securing a grant from the shire for $203k.

Dr Helen Haines Federal MP officially opened the event giving congratulations to the TREK team along with artist Zellie, who painted the mural depicting life in the Alps on the battery, a colourful work indeed.

TREK are looking for more significant projects to complete in Mount Beauty, with engagement with the Alpine Shire.

SES simulate treacherous rescues

By BRODIE EVERIST MEMBERS of the Bright SES and Mount Beauty CFA were practising steep angle and vertical rescues with a VICSES trainer at the old Porepunkah Bridge last Saturday, keeping their skills sharp for the various incidents they may be called to in the region.

The high-angle rescue involved slowly taking a stretcher down the side of the bridge abutment to retrieve a dummy and bring it back on the stretcher, while the steep angle rescue involved traversing the steep bank on the Great Alpine Road side of the river.

William McRae, Bright SES section leader for technical rescues, said the Bright unit practise these types of rescues 3-4 times a year, and once a year with the trainer.

He said the primary purpose of the training is to maintain their skills and ensure a consistent ap-

proach for all rescue operators, including those from different agencies.

“A lot of the skills we already have, but it’s primarily working together, building these systems all the same way,” he said.

“We went through the scenarios quite a few times and by the end we were working really smoothly.

“All the high angle people in the North East - FRV, SES. CFA - all get called out together, and we all work very well.”

He said the steep angle rescue is used even on angles that may not be particularly steep, due to the risk of slipping.

“We did one at Beechworth, where the gorge is, and all the rocks can be really slippery,” he said.

Mr McRae said the Bright SES unit will perform these types of operations at incidents around 1012 times a year.

Strong season, quality cattle keeps prices up in tough market

SOLD: Whorouly South cattle farmer Matt Beach sold 18 steers at $900 a head and 16 heifers at $645 a head at the Myrtleford cattle sale last week.

THE Nutrien yards on Matheson Road were filled with the chatter of auctioneers and the bellow of steers and heifers last Wednesday for the Myrtleford Spring Special Sale, where prices went against the cattle market’s current downward trend.

Wade Ivone, livestock agent for Nutrien Ivone Agencies, said market conditions locally were “business as usual”, due to good weather keeping cattle quality high and demand strong.

“Compared to most of the country our season is a long way better than what most areas are receiving,” he said.

“The condition the cattle were in was very good right the way through the yard - that’s probably a bit

unusual at the moment.”

According to the sales report, the majority of cattle was purchased locally, including by restockers from Myrtleford, Wangaratta, Mansfield and Albury.

Steers priced at an average of $860 per head, with a top sale of $1255, while heifers had an average price of $628, with a top price of $1050.

Mudgegonga cattle farmer Loretta Carroll sold 10 steers for $1205 per head, equalling around 250 cents per kilo – a higher figure than she expected.

She wasn’t sure what was behind the higher prices, but guessed it was partly down to the number of local buyers.

“Nutrien do a good job bringing buyers to the sale,” she said.

“I think they thought quite a few locals would be buying that’ve been holding off a bit just to see what the market does.”

Whorouly South cattle farmer Matt Beach sold 18 steers at $900 a head, and 16 heifers at $645 a head.

He estimated he could’ve received over double that amount last year, but said the sale was as good as could be expected.

“That was an amazing market at the time, which you’ve got to take with the bad market as well,” he said.

He also agreed the local weather had been a boon for farmers.

“There’s definitely other parts of the country which are starting to dry off quickly, but things are looking pretty good

around here,” he said.

“Next month hopefully we get enough dry weather to get some hay cut.”

Mr Ivone said the recent drop in cattle prices has been driven by lower demand for higher-quality meats and concerns over an El Nino weather system creating drought conditions.

He said in parts of New South Wales it is common for producers to sell cattle in big numbers during drier seasons.

“El Nino hasn’t seemed to have affected us too much, but that’s definitely not the case across Australia,” he said.

“There are areas that are very, very dry and haven’t had rain for a fair while.

“That’s where the selloff has been.”

Celebrating Myrtleford’s Century, 1954 style PART 2

By JOHN TAYLOR OAM, Myrtleford and District Historical Society Inc. ENERGISED by the success of the ‘Centenary Week’ conducted from April 17-25, 1954 a variety of events followed in late autumn and into the winter months.

During May, a CWA Drama Festival was held, followed by the Barwidgee Creek Annual Ball and RSL Empire Ball.

In June and July the ball season continued, with a Fireman’s Ball, the Anglican Mid-Winter Ball and a Grand Ball at the Gapsted Hall.

It was during July that the Entertainment columns of the ‘Myrtleford Times’ alerted readers to a Special Catholic Debutante Ball to be held on August 4, 1954.

That night, before 400 patrons, 10 debutantes were announced by Mrs M Crowe and presented to His Lordship, the Most Rev Dr B Stewart, Bishop of Sandhurst.

Descending from the stage, the debutantes (and partners), in order of appearance, were: Lynette Crowe (Eddie Walkear), Margaret Murtagh (Bernie Murtagh), Betty Monshing (Ron Monshing), Valerie Trahair (Harry Hardie), Anne Carroll

Like every ball in the centenary year, the ‘Myrtleford Times reported: “on a splendid floor …… patrons spent a particularly happy night dancing”.

At the end of it all, Myrtleford’s Centennial Year seemed to end ‘quietly’.

From December 18 –24 a 7-day Monster Xmas Fair was held in Queen Street, followed by the first Rodeo (at the Sportsground) and night attractions in Smith Street on December 27.

The Centennial Year was over, but plans were already underway for a New Year’s Day 1955 Mixed Sports Event at the Recreation Reserve!

Residents would wait until 2004 to celebrate the 150th anniversary.

Local electric vehicle owners pleased with tax removal

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE STATE Government attempts to impose a tax on the distance travelled by electric, hydrogen and plugin hybrid vehicle users have been ruled unconstitutional by the High Court.

In a decision handed down earlier this week, the Canberra-based court ruled in favour of Victorian drivers Chris Vanderstock and Kath Davies, who had argued the Victorian Government could not impose its own road user tax on zero and low-emission vehicles (ZLEVs), with the responsibility instead falling on the Federal Government.

The tax charged electric and hydrogen vehicle owners 2.8c for every kilometre they travelled during the year, and plug-in hybrid ve-

hicle owners 2.3c for each kilometre.

Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) chief executive Behyad Jafari said the High Court decision to rebuff the “illconsidered” EV tax would pave the way to better policy across the nation.

“There is nothing inherently wrong with road user charges, but they should never be calibrated to discourage the take up of electric vehicles,” he said.

“The electric vehicle industry warned the Victorian Government this policy was muddleheaded years ago, and the offer has always been on the table to work with the state on a more sensible approach.”

tional Press Club in August, Australian treasurer Jim Chalmers indicated the Federal Government could introduce an ‘electric-car tax’ in the future in order to replace revenue lost from the nation’s fuel excise as a result of the increasing uptake of electric vehicles.

The fuel excise is expected to net the Australian Government upwards of $60 billion between the 2022/23 and 2025/26 financial years.

“I think in the next few years, an increasing focus, certainly of our government and most likely governments will follow us, will be this public policy challenge, this revenue challenge, this challenge to the revenue base,” he said.

“No doubt at some point probably relatively soon by which I mean in the next few years, a government – our government – or our succes-

sor, will turn our mind to it.”

Sustainable Upper Ovens president, Graham Barrow, who has owned an electric vehicle for 18 months, said he was pleased with the High Court’s decision.

“I’m glad the tax has been removed, but there will need to be a resolution on how roads are priced in the future,” he said.

“As we get more EVs the amount of income from fuel excise will drop but our roads will still need to be repaired and looked after.

“To my mind it should be based on the weight of vehicles and the distance of travel and it should be Australia-wide as well as a federal government decision.

“In our region a lot of us drive through NSW and up to Queensland so we pay Victoria while using other roads.

“The tax just about doubled our expenses; our ex-

penses to date have been 3 cents per kilometre and the tax was up to 2.8c per km.

“A huge incentive of owning an EV is the low running cost.”

Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy also threw his support behind the High Court’s decision, labelling the state’s proposed tax “a cheap cash grab” to cover up for “abysmal financial mismanagement”.

“Instead of incentivising electric cars and in turn encouraging more Victorians to buy them, Labor has made it more expensive for families to invest in renewable technology,” he said.

“Now taxpayers are left to foot Labor’s expensive legal bill and clean up their mess.

“EVs are the future, and we need to support innovation and make it as cheap as possible to own and operate electric vehicles into the future.”

Falls Creek local Michelle Lovell takes on new role

FALLS Creek Chamber of Commerce has a new head woman, with local resident and owner of Lakeside Accomodation, Michelle Lovell, stepping into the role with enthusiasm.

Ms Lovell takes over from local business owner Lisa Logan who served the chamber for two years.

“In March of 2021 my husband and I took over Lakeside Accomodation, just when we thought COVID had run its course,” she said.

“Alas, it had not, so we’ve been riding the rollercoaster with the rest of the community since then.

“My background is in hospitality and tourism; I was an onboard manager at Qantas for a number of years before I clipped my wings and took on customer service

and sales roles at various tourism businesses around Victoria.

“My husband and I were tired of working for other people, plus we thought our skills were complementary to each other.

“He’s a builder so we knew we could take on something that needed some work and we chose Falls Creek as it’s as been our happy place for a long time.

“We were just tourists who visited one week a year with our son but we always noticed a shift in our moods when we arrived so when the opportunity arose to move here it was a no-brainer.”

Ms Lovell commended her predecessor on an amazing job in the role.

not see the changes they’re looking for or be able to make changes they need; there’s a fatigue that sets in for people who keep trying and aren’t getting results.

“Being fresh and green I’ve got a level of enthusiasm and motivation to push through and hopefully see some changes that the community are looking to come to fruition.”

One of the committee’s major projects will be creating a website for the chamber to provide a centralised resource facility for local businesses.

“Our new secretary, Nyree Fiddes, is a human resource expert so she’s already said she’ll assist in getting resources like contract templates and incident reports; things businesses need to have,” Ms Lovell said.

“There’s a few projects

around the village that the community is talking about that we’d like to advocate for also.

“Essentially just delving into providing good support for the businesses that have done it tough.”

Ms Lovell said she was looking forward to giving back to local businesses and members.

“It’s been a really hard slog over the last few years,” she said.

“We just want to provide services to give member businesses some hands-on support and hopefully some financial support as well.

“Another thing I’d like to see is creating relationships with the other mountains; now that Falls Creek falls under Alpine Resorts Victoria, I’m sure we’ve got some joint issues we can work on together.”

Frog frolic a success MYRTLEFORD and District Landcare and Sustainability Inc held a community information event about local frog identification last Saturday night.

Landcare member Glenda Janas said guest speaker Dr Anna Turner presented an interactive, fun and informative session, which included a walk in the dark along Happy Valley Creek.

The event included a barbecue dinner and was enjoyed by approximately 40 community members, Ms Janas said.

On behalf of the landcare group she thanked GROW Myrtleford for sponsoring the event.

The event also included their annual general meeting, at which Paul Reser was re-elected president, Phil Prior was re-elected vice president, Brooke Boede was elected secretary and Margaret Prior was re-elected treasurer.

THE Chinese automobile maker GWM Haval has spiced up its popular small petrol sports utility vehicle segment with the addition of a Jolion S, as well as doubling up on the hybrid models to two.

With the Jolion Premium acting as the entry-level, at $28,490 drive-away, the ‘S’ variant ($36,990), slots in the six-model range between the Ultra and the two hybrids, the lesser with Lux trim and priced the same as the S. The Jolion Ultra Hybrid ($40,990) tops off the line-up.

The new Jolion S, on test here, stands alone from the rest of the model range with a pepped-up power plant, fresh multi-link rear suspension and various unique black exterior features for a sportier appearance.

Inside the cabin, only on the ‘S’, is a new layout of buttons directly under the centre dash infotainment screen, preventing their accidental operation.

Owners benefit from GWM’s seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty and economical capped price servicing costs for five years.

STYLING Setting the Jolion S apart from other models are black 18inch wheels, black door mirror caps, black roof rails, black side garnish, and blacked-out lower front and rear bumpers.

Jolians in general, feature a multi-faceted pattern of daytime running lights bookending LED headlamps and foglights.

The grille adds to the shine

with sparkling finish and horizontal accents to create a bold, if flashy, show.

The car’s profile is standard SUV lines with a coupe-like roof curve approaching the Cpillar.

Except having more badges than a Scout jamboree, the rear is as plain as the front is glitzy.

INTERIOR The general occupant opinion was that heated front seats were some of the most comfortable in this class of car, while faux leather with contrast stitching and Haval logo was good enough to give the impression of the luxury of the real thing.

That as maybe, but the lack of angling the driver’s seat base for added comfort and the absence of lumbar support shaved off some of the shine.

The leather-clad steering misses out on reach adjustment. It’s angle only.

Thanks to a long wheelbase the bench-like back seat accommodates three across with generous legroom.

Boot space checks in at 430 litres (enough to take a couple of big suitcases) and 1133 litres with the 60:40 second row stowed. There’s room only for an under-floor space-saver spare.

INFOTAINMENT A 12.3-inch touchscreen crowns the central dashboard and a 7-inch digital display sits directly in front of the driver.

Topping this off is a head-up windscreen display featuring digital speedo, speed limits and lane discipline diagram.

Connectivity consists of the 12.3-inch colour multimedia

touchscreen linked to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Audio is handled by a sixspeaker system, which misses out on a volume knob or toggle, other than on the steering wheel.

The front passenger is left out, limited only to using the audio menu via the touchscreen.

The Jolion S continues the quirky driver focused camera constantly checking whether he or she is paying attention to matters at hand.

A camera fixed to the A-pillar serves up an audible ding and the admonishment ‘Hey, don’t stray!’ on the touchscreen on catching what it thinks is concentration wavering. Chinese checkers? It’s all a bit naff to me.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The Haval Jolion S is powered by an upgraded 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine hitched up to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission driving through the front wheels.

This is enough to come up with a maximum 130 kW and 270 Nm, 20 kW and 50 Nm above the trio below it in the line-up.

SAFETY Standard safety features include seven airbags including front-centre, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

There’s lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, rear crosstraffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop / go and safe exit warning. Unfortunately, some of the assistance is a tad too keen

comfortably to help out.

Cameras create an all-round plan view of the vehicle, while Haval’s A-pillar-mounted spy camera keeps a check of the driver’s behaviour behind the wheel. All Jolians are rated five stars for safety on 2022 testing.

DRIVING Despite upgrades to the powerplant, the turbo turned out to be a little hesitant to connect, especially on inclines. This was even more pronounced in reverse gear, when power came in annoying bursts.

Once on the move, however, the Jolion S put on a boisterous (some would say harsh) performance, especially when wound up. Ragged edges did appear in stop / start city motoring.

As stated by the maker, expect a combined urban / highway fuel consumption of around 7.5 litres per 100km, compared to the standard 1.5’s 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres. A 55-litre tank takes 91 RON unleaded petrol.

The Jolion S is the only model in the line-up to be fitted with a multi-link independent rear suspension, in place of the standard torsion beam set-up, which the maker claims offers ‘enhanced ride and handling’.

The test car took to sweeping around fast bends with the tail fixed firmly to the road.

However, the suspension was susceptible to a bang or two from behind on bumpy roads.

not careful. On the other hand, new push-button climate control switches on the centre dash have alleviated the previous faults with the touch controls, which were easy to catch accidentally while resting the palm when working the touch screen.

SUMMARY While the price of the Haval Jolion S is $3000 up on the past petrol flagship, the Ultra, there is more in the newbie’s performance and packaging to more than justify the financial jump.

Project targets feral pigs LANDHOLDERS and the local community are being urged to report sightings of feral pigs as part of a project aimed at reducing their population across Eastern Victoria.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) and Parks Victoria have combined pig sightings with camera trapping, GPS tracking and thermal drone imagery to target the pest species across the Gippsland and Hume regions.

Over the past two years, hundreds of feral pigs have been detected on camera traps, with many eliminated through baiting, shooting, and trapping techniques.

Ongoing monitoring and baiting of feeders aims to significantly reduce the population of feral pigs within two years and eradicate smaller sub-populations.

DEECA Statewide Invasive Species program manager David Miralles said the Landscape Feral Pig Project, which is funded by the Victorian Government as part of the Protecting Biodiver-

“Feral pigs can be difficult to control due to their nomadic nature, often travelling up to seven kilometres per night,” he said.

“They are also intelligent and highly adaptive, dispersing and travelling to new areas if disturbed or forced by environmental conditions such as fire or flooding.”

Parks Victoria project officer Evan Miller said a satellite collared “Judas pig” is being used to track how feral pigs move across the Alpine National Park.

“Using the data on the Judas

pig’s movements across the landscape provides the opportunity to undertake targeted control operations ensuring effective use of resources” Evan said.

“As part of our feral pig monitoring program, Parks Victoria actively use eDNA testing to assist in the detection of feral pigs across closed water catchments in our National Parks and reserves across Eastern Victoria.”

More than 120 sites across the Alpine and Snowy River National Parks have benefited from pig control covering more than 250,000 hectares of land.

Both Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation and Moogji Aboriginal Council worked on the program, monitoring sites across Eastern Victoria.

Feral pigs are omnivorous and will eat almost anything they can lay their snouts on, including native wildlife species and their eggs.

Pigs also trample native plants and cause havoc around waterways with their rooting and wallowing behaviour, destroying habitat for rare native species.

Evidence of feral pig damage and sightings reported by landholders and the local community helps identify the best locations for more extensive monitoring and control sites.

Diggings, scats, tracks, wallows, tree rubbings, and fence damage all give good indications of recent feral pig activity.

Modest moth could help save endangered possum BOGONG Moths – with nutritional value akin to ‘pre-pregnancy vitamins’ – could hold the key to supporting the critically endangered Mountain Pygmypossums back from the brink of extinction.

Researchers at Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) are eagerly awaiting the up to 1000 km annual migration of Bogong Moths from the plains of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to the high country of Victoria and New South Wales, hoping this year’s moth numbers will be bountiful enough to boost the numbers of juvenile Mountain Pygmy-possums in the alps.

ARV head of environmental sustainability, Louise Perrin, said Bogong Moths are considered a primary food source for Mountain Pygmy-possums over spring and contain vital nutrients that aid in their successful reproduction.

But she said drought, climate change and bright man-made light sources have impacted moth numbers.

“The moths fly into the Mountain Pygmy-possum habitat, rock boulderfields in the alps, just as the possums are waking up from their hibernation,” she said.

“It’s critical for the female possums to have access to and eat a lot of the moths because of the high levels of fat and protein and vitamins.

“That helps support oestrus, pregnancy and milk production in the females so they can breed successfully.”

Ms Perrin said even though the Bogong Moth population had shown some signs of recov-

She said research has shown that Mountain Pygmy-possums experience litter loss with pouch young failing to survive if they do not receive enough nutrients and energy, which largely comes from the moths in spring.

“Mountain Pygmy-possums do not just snack exclusively on moths, they will eat other invertebrates and seeds, but these do not give them all the energy and essentials for successful reproduction of the full four pouch young,” she said.

“We need to help as many Bogong Moths as we can get from the plains of Queensland to the Victorian alps to ensure the possums have the best chance of reproduction and survival.”

Mountain Pygmy-possums were thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered at Mount Hotham in the 1960s.

Ms Perrin said that today,

there are fewer than 2000 of the possums left in the wild.

She said the Mountain Pygmy-possum is Australia’s only hibernating marsupial and hibernates for up to seven months under the snow each year.

In 2020-2021, possum numbers significantly declined because of the lack of moths getting to the boulderfields.

Ms Perrin said the number of Bogong Moths collapsed by an estimated 99.5 per cent, leading to the moths being added to the IUCN endangered species list in 2021. Surveys of Mountain Pygmy-possums across Victorian monitored populations showed that more than 50 per cent of females lost their young in the worst year.

Ms Perrin said light pollution along the eastern seaboard had also diminished moth numbers.

She said a concerted ‘Lights Off for Moths campaign’ was

needed to ensure as many Bogong moths as possible reached the alps.

“The moths’ little navigation systems go skewif with the light pollution, so there’s attrition of moths all the way down the eastern seaboard, and only a certain proportion actually end up in the alps able to support the possums,” she said.

“We really need people to understand that these are indirect but critical impacts.

“Even though you may live far away from where a possum lives, it’s still a good idea to turn off any blaring lights in spring so the maximum number of moths can get into the Victorian boulderfields for these little possums.”

New program for juniors to try golf

By NATHAN DE VRIES THE Myrtleford Golf Club will be running a program for interested juniors to pick up the clubs and have a go at golf, all throughout term four.

Starting Friday afternoon on November 3, the Myrtleford Golf Club is offering their facilities, coaches and equipment for any and all young people who want to try golf to take a swing and see how they like it, once a week for an hour.

Open to participants aged five to 17, the program will focus on small group lessons, and aim to give junior players the chance to explore skills and build confidence to hit the golf course.

For $60, participants gain membership to the Myrtleford Golf Club for six months, and seven weeks of coaching and social fun.

Program organiser Brad Carroll said golf offered social and athletic enjoyment for everyone.

“It’s a sport that requires different physical skills, maybe for young individuals who are perhaps not as competent at sports that involve lots of running and athletic ability,” he said.

“It’s a different skill, and it’s about exploring those skills and gaining confidence to get out and try a new sport, a sport they may not have tried before.

“It’s certainly quite financial if you’re any good at it, if you go along.

“It’s looking to provide the young people in our community with a different sport.

“Lots of people get into golf later in life, but we’re trying to attract some younger people, and try to inject a bit of young blood into the club.

“I know my children are quite keen on it because I play, but it’s about getting some of their friends to come along and try it, that’s why

Mount Beauty golfers compete at Beechworth Bowl GOLFERS Carol Bartholomew, Helen Whittaker and Liz Harvey represented the Mount Beauty ladies at the Beechworth Bowl on Wednesday, October 18.

It was a beautiful day with representatives from about 20 different clubs attending.

The Beechworth team were the winners on the day with only four players from the whole field scoring over 30 points.

Wednesday also saw a field of 15 men beaten by Don Mason with 20 points, while Sam Bellchambers and Dave Browning followed next with their 18 points apiece.

NTP on the 17th was James Martin, back from a lengthy sojourn, and the 18th went to Len Tonn.

Not enough ladies turned out for there to be a competition, but a couple of players enjoyed a lovely social round together.

On Saturday, October 21, the 9 hole Stableford (front nine) winner was Helen Whittaker (37) with 17 points on a countback from Leesa Bevan (five).

SPORT

NTP second hit on the seventh was Gill Harrowfield.

Saturday was also the second round of the club’s Jarman Cup and the field of 23 was out to catch the clubhouse leader, Stephen Short, with his 37 points from the first round.

Sam Bellchambers, who had a first round score of 28 points, put in a mighty effort to score 41 points (totalling 69 points) on the day only to miss dethroning Short by three points as he scored a 35 pointer on the day for a total of 72 points.

Dave Browning (67 points total) and Allan Retallick (65 points total) were the better of the rest of the field.

NTP on the seventh went to Trevor English along with the Tatts Ticket from the Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office, the ninth went to Peter Dilley, 17th went to Sam Bellchambers while Allan Retallick took home the money on the 18th.

Winners are grinners at Myrtleford Bowls Club MYRTLEFORD lawn bowler Mary Tragardh was welcomed back to the club after competing in the National Bowls Championships in Perth, where she became a national champion and gold medallist in the Victorian over 60’s women’s team.

Tragardh has had a great year of success also being crowned the Ovens & Murray Bowls Region’s Women’s Champion of Champions and also almost completing a clean sweep of the Ladies Club Championships at Myrtleford for season 2022/23.

On Sunday Tragardh, Peta Mattys, and Cheryl Lewis also teamed up with Caroline Riley and progressed to the O&M ladies fours final to be played next Sunday at Myrtleford at 10am.

The club welcomed Tragardh back into the A1 pennant team last Saturday where she skippered her rink to a 19-9 victory.

It was a great start for the A1

team winning all four rinks to defeat Benalla 85 shots and taking the maximum 18 points to Benalla 53 shots.

Greg Robbins’ rink won 21/17, Mick Dwyer won 20/16 and Lance Symons 25/11 to complete the whitewash.

The B1 team travelled to St James and upset the home team winning 65 shots, 12 points to St James 60 shots, two points.

Mark Simpson led his rink to a 26/17 win, Les Brown went down after a great fightback late in the game 17/22, and Graham Burrington got home 22/21.

Unfortunately, the B3 team went down to Corowa Civic by just one shot 61 shots to 62 - Col Byrne led his rink to a 22/18 victory, Pippa LaSpina went down 22/25 as did Jill Bates 17/19.

This Saturday, the A1 team travels to Wangaratta to take on one of the O&M’s most powerful teams.

The memorial cups, also known as Daphne and Norman, are named after two Australian tennis players: Daphne Akhurst, who won the women’s singles title at the Australian Championship five times between 1925 and 1930, and Norman Brookes,

a former Grand Slam Champion winning at Wimbledon in 1907 and 1914 and the Australasian Championship in 1911.

The cups have a busy publicity schedule leading up to the Australian Open in January 2024 and the Tennis Victoria representative who brought the trophies to Bright has advised that fortunately they had pre-booked the trophies for the regional tour, otherwise they would have been on a plane Paris bound.

The day was a great success

with about 80 people coming along to view the trophies, enjoy some tennis, music and food.

In the afternoon, the club held their annual senior doubles club championships.

Although the rain held off for Daphne and Norman, the doubles players weren’t so lucky with all matches being played in a light drizzle of rain.

As the singles and mixed doubles divisions had already been contested earlier this year, the day’s events were focused on the

men’s and Ladies’ doubles divisions.

Congratulations to Will Pearce and Chris Pangrazio, who won the men’s doubles in the match of the day, overcoming runnersup Craig Thompson and Mick Crocker in a tie-breaker 7-4.

In the ladies’ doubles, congratulations go to new pairing Jody Vlahandreas and Charlotte Paton who rallied well to outplay last year’s champions Mel Worth and Michelle Yarwood in a close match 6-4.

Vescio back to lead Savoy men in 2024 A FAMILIAR face will be back in charge of Myrtleford’s senior and reserve soccer squads for the upcoming season, with experienced coach Jayden Vescio signing on to lead the Savoy men.

One of the most decorated coaches Savoy Park has seen, Vescio delivered five trophies in four years, and had signed on for a fifth year in 2020 before the COVID lockdowns decimated community sport.

Joined by previous coaches Nagus Henry and Richard Morgan, Myrtleford will be a force to be reckoned with come the 2024 AWFA season.

“It was easy enough, a couple of chats with some people midway through this year, and one thing led to another, and I’m back – can’t get away from the joint,” Vescio said.

“We played in five consecutive grand finals, and won three in a row and lost a grand final either side of that, and a couple of league championships in there.

“It was a good run, and it’s good to be back involved - we had some success back then, but it’s a new playing group and a new job.”

Vescio said he aimed to build up both the senior and reserve squads, boosting both to championship contention.

“We’ll build off the back of last year, obviously I’ve taken on the seniors and reserve, which I haven’t done before, and there’s a

bit of work to do in the reserves,” he said.

“I think Richard (Morgan) and Nagus (Henry) have done a good job – the ones finished seventh and played in a cup final, they probably had chances to win that cup final, so that was really good from them.

“Ultimately, we want to finish higher on the ladder and play in those bigger games later in the year, so that’s the plan.”

The great news keeps coming for the club, with incoming president Anthony Zanghellini heading up a new-look committee.

Zanghellini said the club aimed to be as strong off the field as they would be on-field under Vescio’s leadership.

“It gives us certainty at the club, it gives us momentum to move forward with,” he said.

“The head coach of a club is the most important role with coaching, so to have that locked down and the excitement that it brings building on the success of this year.

“Having Jayden back in the fold, he’s got a couple of connections with a couple boys who will hopefully be looking to return.

“We’ve got a new committee, a new executive committee, we’re really driving sponsorship hard at the moment.

“The sponsorships are off and flying – we’re giving big shoutouts on our Facebook page, and we’ve even had people who have had business from the shout-out on the Facebook page, so that’s fantastic.”

Pre-season for Myrtleford’s men’s sides kicks off in late November.

BRIGHT’S A3 lawn bowls squad travelled to Beechworth on the weekend and were warmly welcomed by the members.

Bright players found the synthetic carpet very challenging, as the pace of the green is very different to the grass surface at Bright.

The final score was Bright 62/2 points defeated by Beechworth 111/16 points.

Martin Kupferle’s team had a win with lead Linda Hayes, second Steve Jenvey, and third Ernie Vanderwert 21/20, while Peter Raduczic’s team with lead Wayne Curtis, second Bev Griffith, and third Jill Woods 17/27 went down.

Young guns steer OVU to victory

By WILLSON MACK OVENS Valley United’s middle-order stood tall to deliver a tight win over Yarrawonga Mulwala in the A grade WDCA match at RC McNamara Reserve on Saturday.

The Lakers won the toss and elected to bat at RC McNamara Reserve but quickly slumped to 3/21 after losing the wickets of Matt Knight and Reid Clarke for five apiece, while Kyle Archibald was trapped in front for three by Sam Piazza.

Yarrawonga Mulwala young guns Jobe Fraser and Brock McCabe saved their side’s innings with a 78-run stand but that came to an end as Piazza took his third scalp for the day dismissing McCabe for 31.

Fraser then teamed up with Angus McMillan who made a handy 15 runs to complement Fraser’s 78 as the away side posted an unlikely 8/163 from their 40 overs.

“We started like a house on fire and had them three down for not many (runs),” Ovens Valley United skipper Dylan Bursill said.

“But then Brock McCabe and Jobe Fraser came out and they batted really well and fought back which we knew they would do.

“The last five to 10 overs they had a few wickets in the shed and started to open up a bit but I thought we restricted them really well in that last part.

“Sam Piazza bowled really well up front and at the death and ended up taking four.

“In the end we were pretty happy to keep them to 160 on a good pitch.”

Ovens Valley United’s batting innings wasn’t too dissimilar to the Lakers, falling to 3-31 after Jake Riley (2), Seamus Phillips (10) and Bursill (2) failed to trouble the scorers too much.

Bar Canadian import Gurjot Gosal making a quickhitting 27 off 23 deliveries, it was the Tigers’ middle order that stood up though as Kane Fitzpatrick (18), Connor Forde (39) and Tyler Thomason (46) all made valuable contributions.

“Our hard-hitting import Gurjot (Gosal) got us going at the top of the order, he took the pressure off early target-

“We had Big V players on Benalla missing easy shots because of how intense our defence was, but ultimately they hit a couple of lucky ones and got ahead of us in the end.”

The Saints face another classy outfit this weekend, taking on the undefeated Albury Cougars in an away fixture.

Gebauer said it was a good chance for his side to rebound and take the fight to a quality opposition.

“We’re looking forward to it – we’ve got one or two guys away for that game, but ultimately I think Albury’s a very good match-up for us because they’re a team that suits our style of play and the way we attack the basket and run in transition,” he said.

“I don’t think Albury are going to be able to slow that down for four quarters.

“I think it’ll be a good and exciting match-up, much like Benalla, but ultimately I feel very confident - we have all the tools and all the manpower we need to come away from that game with the win.”

“Our boys will take huge confidence away from the win, especially because we did it without two of our better bowlers in Mikka Paulsen and Cooper Thomason.

“We now move into the two dayers which are always a challenge but I’m looking forward to them.”

The Tigers take on Delatite this Saturday at Lord’s Reserve in Mansfield for the next two weeks, donning their whites for the first time this year.

In other senior grades, the A reserve squad were bundled up for just 80 before the Lakers put on 163 runs, and the B grade fell just four runs short of City Colts’ 98 run target.

“When you see the fixture come out, you always look for where and when you play Dederang, it’s always an occasion you look forward to playing against the local rivals.

Bright basketballers taking the next step

THREE students from Bright P-12 College have recently been accepted into the North East Bushrangers squad, a step-up from the local Myrtleford and Wangaratta basketball squads they currently play in.

Thirteen-year-olds Darcy Andersen and Brock Buckland, and 16-year-old Patrick Ferrito, found out they had made the squads last Wednesday - exciting news for the trio.

“I was pretty proud of myself that I challenged myself to try out for the Bushies,” Patrick said.

Darcy said he was looking forward to improving his knowledge of the game and playing with people of a higher standard.

When asked what he liked about the sport Darcy said: “Everything – it’s fastpaced.”

“I just love the sport.”

Brock, who usually plays as a small forward or shooting guard, has made the squad after only two years of playing basketball.

“I’ve got a lot further than I expected I would,” he said.

Darcy and Brock spoke to the Myrtleford Times/ Alpine Observer before they attended the weekend camp, which they said would consist of team-bonding activities to help their confidence in the new squad.

That was likely to be a particular help for Brock as he said he wanted to be better at communicating with his teammates during a game.

Patrick, who spoke with the paper after attending the camp, said it was

a great time, with players from across the North East, including Shepparton and Mansfield.

“It was the under-14s, under-16s and under-18s all together,” he said.

“Spending time with each other, getting to know each other better and then on the second day we took the bus to Mansfield and we had around a two-hour training session.

“I think my favourite part was just making some new friends from around the area.”

He said they did drills, ran a lot and had groups of five playing against each other to simulate real gameplay.

Patrick said the squad hasn’t made the selection of division one or two teams, so he has to play at his best, but he feels playing with the Wangaratta Warriors has prepared him well.

“At Wangaratta we have a really good coach who challenges us and is really great,” he said.

“I think I’m pretty good defensively, and I’m pretty fast.”

By NATHAN DE VRIES MOUNT Beauty’s bowling attack proved too strong for Barnawartha-Chiltern to handle on Saturday, when the Power knocked over the Miners for just 34 runs defending a mammoth 189 total.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, openers Daniel Saville and Patrick Dodd had the runs flowing with a 36 run partnership before Dodd departed for 22 runs.

Ross Wilson stuck around and carved 40 from 66 rocks to anchor the innings, with solid contributions coming from the Power’s middle order, as the total crept higher and higher.

Captain Daniel Saville said given the challenging deck, he was happy setting the Miners 190 for victory.

“The top seven made double figures, with a couple of lower order knocks as well,” he said.

“It’s a focus for us to keep wickets in hand, to try and value your wicket, partnership batting is the key.

“There were no superstar knocks, it wasn’t the easiest wicket to bat on, you had to do a bit of hard work – it was no fun and games in terms of pace and bounce, so I think 190 (to win) was a good score.

“It wasn’t the free-flowing cricket we normally play, but 190 runs on the board, I was pretty happy with that.”

With the runs on the board and ball in hand, the Power began their bowling innings in the best possible fashion after Osbert Ramage was caught out on the opening delivery to have the Miners 1/0.
