Driver rescued after plunging 150 metres Bright beaten in Page 10

AN Ovens resident is lucky to be alive after his vehicle slid off an icy section of the Great Alpine Road and came to rest almost 150 metres down the steep embankment near Hotham Heights last Friday evening. Three Bright SES crew members descended the slope to help rescue the driver from his vehicle, in what was a multi–agency operation requiring police, Mount Beauty CFA, Har-

rietville Rural Fire Brigade, Mount Hotham–Dinner Plain CFA, the High Angle Rescue Techniques team from Wangaratta Fire and Rescue, Ambulance Victoria, and the Mount Hotham Ski Patrol. The road was blocked for around six hours and Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll, of

Bright police, said the man was transported to Wangaratta hospital. He was later taken to a Melbourne hospital where has undergone several surgeries to treat serious injuries, including broken ribs and a broken pelvis. Alpine Spirit Coaches owner Chris Bonacci posted on the police Facebook site that the driver involved in Friday’s incident was a senior snow driver with his company who was

making his way back home for the weekend when he fell victim to the “freak accident”. Mr Bonacci, on behalf of his company and the man’s family, thanked all emergency service personnel who attended and assisted in the rescue. “Our driver is now in safe hands in Melbourne because of your efforts and hard work,” he posted. Mr Bonacci said yesterday that the man “is

expected to make a full recovery, but it will take a long time”. Snr Sgt Incoll implored motorists to drive to conditions and use proper judgement and patience when driving on the Great Alpine Road. He said Friday’s incident was the third vehicle accident in the Alpine Shire in only five days. “In all of those accidents they (drivers) could have easily been killed,” he said.
