Resort visitation strong ALPINE resorts across the state saw a drop in visitation compared to 2022, but visitor numbers to Mount Hotham still topped pre-COVID-19 visitation, while Falls Creek recorded the third highest visitation numbers over the past ten years. According to visitation data from Alpine Resorts Victoria, total visitation to resorts across the state this year dropped by 24 per cent compared to 2022, while Mount Hotham and Falls Creek saw a drop of 26 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively. Over 154,000 visited Hotham over the 2023

season, a figure only topped by the 209,000 that visited in 2022 – considered a recordbreaking season. Similarly, over 168,000 visited Falls Creek in 2023, beaten only by the strong 2022 season and just pipped by the 2017 season. Mount Hotham Chamber of Commerce president Steve Belli said Hotham had seen a lot of day trippers over the

season, with many bringing their own food or staying in at night instead of going out. “We did see people coming for a shorter period of time and more self-catering going on, which is just evidence of the times we’re in at the moment,” he said. He also felt that more people of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds were heading to the snow, which may have contributed to less eating out at the resort. “We’re getting demographics that like particular styles of food, and

there’s not a lot of options at Hotham,” he said. 2023 saw a lighter snowfall than previous seasons, with the season starting late and finishing early. According to the Mount Hotham Resort, snow depth peaked in July at around 88cm and gradually diminished until September. “We missed out for opening weekend but that happens from time to time,” said Mr Belli. “The snow levels weren’t ideal in terms of actual snowfall, but the technology that’s in place now and the

equipment that we’ve got to mould and make snow is quite incredible. “ Similarly, marketing and communications coordinator for Hotham Resort Management Bec Sanders said continued advancements in snowmaking-technology helped to supplement the natural snowfall. “We had snow cover that wouldn’t have been possible to create 10 years ago,” she said. “The teams responsible for snow quality, the snow makers, and groomers, put in an incredible amount

of work to keep the resort open to guests for as long as possible.“ Sarah Watt, director of marketing and communications for Falls Creek Alpine Resort, said visitation data shows Falls Creek Resort has seen a 25 per cent increase in average visitor numbers over the past 10 years. “What’s more positive is the increase in visitor days at the resort,” she said. “This means we are seeing more visitors staying within the resort or surrounding communities and enjoying their time in the region.”
