Porepunkah CFA $80K boost POREPUNKAH CFA is $80,000 closer to their goal of renovating its existing station, thanks to the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP). Captain Mick Dalbosco said the funding will go towards turning the existing engine bay into a meeting room, office and change rooms and building a new engine bay alongside it. “We’ve been trying to get a green light for our renovation for a while and this

will hopefully put it one step closer,” he said. “We had a start date last year but it was put on hold due to post-COVID price increases with building and material costs. “We’ve been fundraising and applying for grants since 2018 so we’re keen to see the start date set again.

“At the moment we have to contribute $40,000 as the second part of the grant so we’ll keep fundraising and pushing ahead, on top of some contributions we’ve had in the past and the general brigade fund we have. “We’ll just keep lining things up and hopefully put us into a good position.” CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said VESEP grants help provide brigades with significant funding for lifesaving equipment.

“This program provides $2 for every $1 of funding from the brigade, and helps with the purchase of equipment such as vehicles, trucks, tankers, watercraft, trailers, and can also include minor facility improvements,” CO Heffernan said. “The contribution from the government towards equipment means brigades like Springhurst have a great incentive to fundraise in their communities and

apply for a VESEP grant. “There are also Special Access Grants available to provide a further financial boost for brigades that face challenges with fundraising.” Other big winners in the North East included Wooragee and Browns Plains CFA brigades, each receiving $214,000 towards a new CFA vehicle, $50,000 for Wangaratta North and Springhurst CFA which received more than $370,000.

MOUNT Beauty Chamber of Commerce president Glenys Peacock has reported the chamber received positive feedback from stallholders on the Mount Beauty Community Market, but business owners were concerned the market did not draw foot traffic into the town centre. The market, held on November 5, was the first administered by the Chamber of Commerce after they took over from the local Uniting Church in October. Due to wet conditions, the market was held in the West Peak Hotel carpark instead of Hydro Park. Ms Peacock said the chamber will assess how the market can better draw traffic into the Mount Beauty CBD. She said the market mainly attracted locals who are familiar with the stalls and businesses in town, but the chamber aims to grow the market and increase tourism from a wider area. “Our goal will be to increase the market so it will be a destination and draw people from outside the area and increase trade for business as well,” she said.
