ROTARY MARKET SUCCESS

JUST CRUISIN’: Magnificent motors rolled though Bright last Saturday, with onlookers enjoying the sun and the spectacle. PHOTO: Brodie Everist

From all around BRIGHT was chock-a-block with fine cars rolling through town last Saturday for the Bright Rod Run, with people lining the streets to watch the motors, or escaping the sun with a treat from ice cream parlours. The Alpine Observer set out to find who had travelled the furthest for the rod run and first met Don Bromley, who had come from Berwick, east of Melbourne, on Thursday. “It was a long drive,” he said. He said enjoyed seeing the variety of cars and meeting up with friends for the weekend. “We’ve had a number of these cars; it’s nice to still see them running around,” he said.

On Saturday, Albury residents Greg and Lyn Harris were sitting in the middle of Ireland Street, prime real estate for car watching. Mr Harris said he owns two Falcons, an MG and an Austin Healey. “I’m a member of a local car club in Albury and into the classic cars,” Mr Harris said. “I did a panel beating apprenticeship when I left school

and I’ve always been into cars.” He said they were heading to the Wangaratta Speedway later that day. Wodonga resident Sandy Banaszczyk was on the corner of Ireland Street and Railway Avenue and said she had been coming to the event for nine years. She said Holdens were her favourite car. “I just grew up with Holdens, we’ve had them all our life,” she said. Berwick was the furthest travelled this paper could find, but Bright resident Bob Waymouth had probably travelled the least. Mr Waymouth estimated he had

only walked five metres from his unit in Hawthorn Close to watch the cars drive past on Cobden Street. He said he had worked as a panel beater for around 40 years and enjoys watching hot rod shows on television, but this is the first time he’s watched the cars during the Bright Rod Run. “Where I lived in Melbourne, the panel shop was more or less around the corner, and I’d always thought one day I’d be doing something in the motor trade,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind having an older car but the trouble is, where am I going to put it?” ■ More rod run photos page 12
