Bank branch to stay BY BRODIE EVERIST beverist@ nemedia.com.au
THE planned closure of the Bright Commonwealth Bank branch has been postponed following a request from a Senate standing committee to pause regional branch closures until the end of 2023. In a statement sent to the Alpine Observer the Commonwealth Bank said it will not close any regional branches while the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee‘s inquiry into bank closures in regional Australia is underway in 2023. “As an additional sign of good faith, while the inquiry is underway in 2023, CBA will postpone the closure of two branches already announced,” they said. “We continue to welcome constructive engagement with government, industry and communities – an approach demonstrated by our recent work with all members of the Regional Banking Taskforce. “CBA looks forward to assisting the inquiry, and continuing to engage with our customers and communities, as we collectively respond to the digitisation of the economy and banking services.” Independent MP for Indi Helen Haines, who had

COMMONWEALTH CLOSURE: Bright residents Hilly Hart and Romana Favier are disappointed the Bright Commonwealth Bank branch may close and hope the bank will reverse its decision. Story page 2. PHOTO: Brodie Everist asked the bank to reverse the closure of the Bright branch, welcomed the announcement. “On Monday morning I met with a senior representative from the Commonwealth Bank to express my dismay and concern about the bank‘s decision to close the Bright branch,” she said. “I am pleased the Commonwealth Bank has now announced it will
suspend that decision until the end of the year. “The Bright branch is an important part of the community, with elderly residents in particular relying on it for their banking needs. Bright has a significantly older than average population, with 35 per cent of residents being over the age of 60 compared with 23 per cent across Victoria. “Last week a Senate
inquiry into regional bank closures was announced. I am hopeful that through this process, the big banks will properly consider the way in which they service regional towns, including Bright. “They must properly consult with communities and consider the impact of potential closures before taking decisions which have a serious impact on communities.”

The Commonwealth Bank announcement followed the passing of a Federal senate motion to hold a parliamentary inquiry into regional bank closures. The motion, put forward by Coalition senators Gerard Rennick and Slade Brockman last week, has been referred to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee for inquiry and report by 1 December 2023.
The inquiry will examine the branch closure process, including the reasons given for closures; the economic and welfare impacts of branch closures on customers and regional communities; the impact of bank closures or the removal of face–to–face cash services on access to cash; and the effectiveness of government banking statistics capturing and reporting regional service levels.
