The 2023 Fred Awards celebrate Australian adults who are making a difference in their community and is an expansion of the Humanity Award, which recognises year six students who show kindness, compassion, and integrity.

Teacher and T h d nominator i t Jacquie Walpole said Harlow is passionate about the environment and has organised fundraising events for koala conservation and written letters to politicians about the plight of Alpine dingoes in Victoria.

“My family, friends and I watched the ceremony live from the TV in the classroom,” Harlow said.

“I was so glad to be with all my friends when I found out; it was such an amazing surprise and it felt really

good thatt my voice d th i and d what h t I do for the environment was being heard.

“My plans now are to just continue to raise awareness about the significance of our Alpine dingoes and the misnaming of them as wild dogs.

“I’m also advocating for changes needed to the baiting and trapping programs currently used.

“I will also be helping my nan look after animals over the holidays, crocheting possum pouches, fundraising

GREENS TESTING BEGINS

Marian marathon tradition continues

MARIAN College students completed the annual Marian 100 relay last Friday, marking the end of their school year with a charity run from Hotham to Myrtleford.

The students, wearing green Tshirts covered in the names of charity sponsors, met at the Old Butter Factory at around 2:30pm before they made the final run into Myrtleford, running along Myrtle Street and Clyde Street with a police escort, and then to Marian College.

They crossed Memorial Park and reached the finish line to the applause of proud teachers, parents and St Mary’s Primary School students.

Teacher and junior school leader Tony Cuskelly said it was one of the tightest groups he had seen, with students consistently helping each other.

“A couple of times here today we needed a few people to step up and they did that - so thanks to the green tsunami,” he said.

He said weather conditions had been idyllic as they descended Mount Hotham, with some light rain in Harrietville.

He thanked the support staff for the event, particularly teacher and Marian 100 coordinator Davina Perkins.

The students ran in groups, running 5-kilometre stints on the Great Alpine Road from Mount Hotham to Harrietville and then along the rail trail to Myrtleford.

Between stints students would travel in a bus to the next checkpoint.

Students agreed leg 19, near Valley Homestead, was the hardest, and year 11 Fearghus Jones said it was

particularly hot and unshaded.

Relay runner Jack Hazeldine said he had a great experience and is keen to do it next year.

“Hopefully we get more people, raise lots of money,” he said.

He thanked Mr Cuskelly and gave a shout out to year 7 student Thomas Griffiths.

“He’s been to every training,” he said.

“We had a run where it was, I think, five or six kms where we had a lot of the senior boys running - he stuck with us and he ran the whole way at the front.

“I hadn’t spoke to him before today and now I feel like I’d be able to speak to him at school.”

Year 12 student Marcello Vescio said he ran around 36 kilometres.

“Pretty tough towards the end,” he said.

“Good group of boys and girls that

were running with us in a real tightknit group.”

Robert Gasperotti watched some of his grandchildren complete the relay, a long tradition for the Myrtleford resident.

The grandfather of 13 expects the tradition to continue for a number of years, as younger descendants enter high school.

“I’ve been watching my kids do it for a long time, and now I’ve got grandkids doing it,” he said.

The relay marks the end of the year for Marian College, with some older students looking to the challenges of the coming year.

Fearghus said he was a little nervous at entering year 12 next year, when he will study Maths Methods, Physics, Chinese, English and Product and Design.

“I’ve got a bit of work to do, I reckon,” he said.

Youth resilience taking flight on moth’s delicate wings

By BRODIE EVERIST YOUNG people from across Victoria were in Bright last Thursday for a collaborative art project aiming to develop skills and increase cooperation across Eastern Victoria for members of a youth-based resilience program.

Youth workers and peer workers were at the Pavilion in Pioneer Park painting a collection of canvases to be placed together to depict a Bogong Moth – the logo of the Future Proof program, which is funded by a Black Summer bushfire recovery grant to drive youthled disaster risk reduction outcomes for fire-affected young people and communities.

Supervisor Lee Paul, from the Art Bar Bright, said the artwork was a collaborative project where each painter had to consult with others to ensure their part of the

artwork would align with surrounding canvases and match corresponding parts of the symmetrical Bogong Moth.

The work is also highly symbolic, with the moth’s endangered status representing imbalance, but also the value of returning to stability and resilience.

The wings of the moth depict imagery of the Great Dividing Range, symbolic to the geographic locations of the project partners.

Ms Paul also said aboriginal groups would meet in summer to feast on the plentiful moths, meaning the flying insect also represents community and connectedness.

“I thought it was important to recreate the logo that shows the story of resilience,” she said.

“The sun is new life, the circle is storytelling - all about their journey in the project, and the moth repre-

sents them and the significance of what they’ve done.”

According to Ms Paul, the group met at around 9:30am, starting with a workshop before they began painting at 10am.

“They’ve worked really well together - it’s been very chill,” she said.

She said the painting was to be hung at the Melbourne head office of the Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic), the coordinating partner of the Future Proof program.

The Future Proof program brings together a range of partners, including eight local councils, Victoria University and two local learning employment networks.

YACVic disaster resilience coalition principal Carla Hall said the group was made up of youth workers and peer workers engaged in local government, NGOs, and Aboriginal-controlled

organisations, who are working with young people to form disaster resilience recovery groups or youth advisory groups, as well as deliver community projects.

“They’re getting trained up as youth workers in their community,” she said.

“This was based off consultations that were done with young people affected by the Black Summer fires, and they said they needed greater connection with community and youth workers.

“So this program is ensuring that the youth work capacity across regional Victoria is increased.”

This was the seventh event where the workers met to share knowledge, skills and do training, and it was expected to be the last, but the Federal Government has announced an extension of the black summer program for another 12 months, she said.

Have your say on Victoria’s renewable energy zones VICGRID is commencing work to develop the first Victorian Transmission Plan and shape Victoria’s future Renewable Energy Zones (REZs).

As part of the first phase of the process, the Victorian Government body is undertaking a community survey to inform a state-wide Strategic Land Use Assessment, which will provide the foundation of the planning and development of Victoria’s REZs. This Land Assessment will be delivered over several stages.

The first stage, underway now, is a critical starting point for developing

the Victorian Transmission Plan.

According toVicGrid, the plan will identify REZ priority areas, which are broad geographical areas across Victoria that are most appropriate to further investigate and plan for the future development of renewable energy generation, storage and transmission infrastructure.

These are areas considered suitable for development based on a range of land use, social, environmental, cultural and technical factors.

The Land Assessment will also identify highly sensitive areas

where development should be minimised or avoided.

To better understand community views and important land use and landscape values across the state, VicGrid is inviting participation in a REZ Planning Survey and community values mapping tool.

VicGrid is asking Victorians, particularly those living in regional and remote rural communities, to share what is important in their community so it can plan Victoria’s REZs effectively.

be open to the public through the Engage Victoria website until the end of January 2024: https://engage.vic. gov.au/victransmissionplan.

The map will collect information on community values, an important dataset for transmission planning. Paper versions of the survey, with a reply-paid envelope, will also be available.

VicGrid has also partnered with a social research company, Voconiq.

Starting in late 2023, Voconiq will seek participants for the VicGrid REZ Planning Survey via phone or in-person.

Police reminder to stay drink-safe POLICE will be conducting regular preliminary breath tests and conducting random intercepts over the holiday period, according to Leading Senior Constable Anthony Short of Myrtleford Police.

All-weather campaign rolls on with greens testing

By BRODIE EVERIST SOIL samples of the green have been taken at the Myrtleford Bowls Club, the next step in the club’s long-term push for a synthetic surface and a canopy.

A geotechnical engineer was onsite last Wednesday drilling with a hand auger, obtaining the samples that will inform the selection of the synthetic surface and provide important data for the installation of a canopy.

Club president Lance Symons said samples were to be drilled from the centre and the four corners of both greens.

“This is a precursor to the big project as a requirement to establish the true soil profile down as far as a metre and a half beneath the playing surface,” he said.

According to Mr Symons, the geotechnical testing will cost around $14,000, but the club has also received a $5000 grant from the Grow Myrtleford+ sub fund towards the testing.

He thanked the sub-fund, and the Myrtleford Men’s Shed as the auspicing body for the grant.

He said the club has the funds to convert one of the greens to synthetic, but the conversion of both simultaneously would save money, so they are hoping they can receive funding through an Alpine Shire grant to fund some of the second green.

Club vice president Greg Robbins said converting both greens at once would cost around $530,000, plus GST, with a saving of around $70-80,000 compared to converting one at a time.

MORE than $20,000 has been spent this financial year addressing vandalism of public amenities, according to the Alpine Shire Council’s director of assets Alan Rees.

Responding to a question on notice at last month’s council meeting, Mr Rees said they have been working with Victoria Police, schools and community groups, but they are struggling to reduce vandalism of amenities.

A TWO hectare grassfire which spread at Markwood on Tuesday morning is believed to have been sparked after a cow reportedly chewed through a powerline to a pump shed in a local paddock.

Firefighters were called to the Snow Road around 9.10am, after a blaze was identified on the side of a hill near the Carboor-Everton Road intersection.

A CFA spokesperson said the fire occurred in an area which housed significant amounts of stringybark.

“The fire was declared safe at 10.30am but crews remained on scene for a couple of hours blacking out (the area),” the spokesperson said.

“CFA had five trucks on scene and one vehicle supported by Fire Rescue Victoria.

“The cause of the fire is believed to be a cow which had chewed through a powerline to a pump shed.”

Carols galore for Bright Singers FESTIVE spirits were high over the weekend with up to 100 people singing along with the Bright Singers at their carol performances in Mount Beauty and Bright.

Musical director Angela Isherwood said both events went very well.

“We had wonderful feedback from the audiences and they really enjoyed the performances,” she said.

“We were minus two singers at the first concert but we continued as best we could without them and nothing major went wrong which was great.

“Everyone sang very well and having Brodie at the second one made a big difference to the music with his saxophone and clarinet playing.

oake’ event on Wednesday, December 20 from 5.30pm at the Bright Brewery.

The event will raise money for the group to enable them to continue buying music and renting halls for performances.

No position yet on Dederang BESS: Council

By BRODIE EVERIST THE Alpine Shire Council has no formal position on the Dederang battery energy storage system (BESS) proposal, council chief executive officer Will Jeremy confirmed at their November meeting.

The proposal, developed by renewable energy company Mint Renewables, is for a BESS with

an indicative capacity of 400 megawatt hours (MWh) with a possible 4-hectare footprint beside the Dederang Terminal Station.

Mr Jeremy said councillors and council staff are still seeking information on the proposal, and he believed a meeting was to occur between the proponents of the project and council planning staff

Councillors said they welcomed feedback they had received from the public on the battery proposal.

Cr Forsyth acknowledged concerns raised over the location of the project.

“We’re just waiting on more information, as Mr Jeremy said,

with Mint and what they are proposing and whether or not we can strongly advocate to the minister at the state level regarding the siting of the BESS,” Cr Forsyth said.

The project was the subject of a community meeting in Dederang last month attended by Cr Forsyth, Cr Kelli Prime and council’s director of assets Alan Rees.

Wastewater plant drop-in session today NORTH East Water (NE Water) is holding a drop-in session today (Wednesday) from 6-8pm at the Porepunkah Hall, 1 Martley Street, on the Bright wastewater treatment plant upgrade.

According to NE Water, the wastewater treatment plant that services Bright and Porepunkah requires an upgrade as it does not meet the capacity needs of the community and no longer meets contemporary treatment standards.

A new discharge arrangement is needed and the water company is currently determining what arrangement is required, where this will be located, and what treatment plant upgrades will be necessary.

Members of the public are invited to attend a community information session where they can talk directly with members of the project team to learn more about the upgrade.

Light refreshments will be served and people are welcome to drop in throughout the evening.

According to NE Water, sewage from the Bright and Porepunkah townships is currently treated in a lagoon-based wastewater treatment plant.

The treated wastewater is currently discharged via an infiltration basin where it indirectly flows to the Ovens River via a groundwater infiltration basin.

The system also has a small reuse supply scheme to the nearby golf club.

We moved to the area in mid-2018 from Southeast Melbourne into Bright. Soon after we moved to the Wandi Valley where we call home.

What do you do for a living?

My role is an insurance broker for Ovens Valley Insurance Brokers (OVIB to some).

As a broker, my role addresses various facets in the insurance space including arrangement of insurance policies for businesses, homes, motor vehicles, liabilities and various other cover types.

My role extends to include assisting clients with the management of their claims and liaising with insurers with information required to support claim positive outcomes.

What are your hobbies and interests?

Most of my hobbies and interests are heavily linked to my family.

I enjoy time in the garden growing fruit and vegies – love growing a spicy chilli. Having said that, I dislike weeding (as do we all).

Come winter, you’ll find me up the hill with my family at Hotham or Falls Creek.

Outside winter, I enjoy a pedal in the Mystic bike area. But as mentioned, spending quality time with our family at town

I used to be a school bus driver.

I liked seeing the kids grow up, go from primary school to secondary.

I drove the Buckland bus for eight years.

Regional riders deliver Christmas gifts

MOTORCYCLISTS from across the region donated over 200 gifts and more than $1000 to the Salvation Army in their annual toy run last Sunday, marking the 20th anniversary of the event.

The riders gathered outside the Ovens Hotel at around 10am before a blessing by local Anglican priest Mother Moira Evers.

Organiser David Hogg said

they travelled along the Snow Road to Markwood, cut across to Wangaratta, rode to Tarrawingee and then to Beechworth.

He said the hour-long ride got them to the Salvation Army hall in Beechworth a little early, where they enjoyed the airconditioning and the barbecue lunch.

The event first started in Bright in 2003 and was later taken up by Mr Hogg and Trevor Botting.

Mr Hogg said they even had two original members with them for the ride.

“They’re quite rapt it’s going along and seems to be going strong again,” he said.

“We want to push for a bigger and better one next year.”

Before leaving on the journey Wangaratta rider Peter Gladstone told the Myrtleford Times/ Alpine Observer the event embodied the spirit of Christmas.

“This is what biking is all about,” he said.

“Someone puts up their hand and says this will be a ride and everyone turns up.”

Mr Gladstone was also embodying the spirit of Christmas by dressing as Santa Claus.

He said he was “cooking” in the warm morning weather but was confident once he started riding the wind would cool him down.

THREE men from the Kiewa Valley were recently recognised for their contribution to the Alpine Shire L2P Program for more than 10 years of voluntary service.

Keiwa Valley locals Bill Little, Keith Pike and Noel McDougall said they have no intention of retiring any time soon.

Bill and Keith both joined the program and 2012, soon after the commencement of the program and Noel in 2013.

Over that time, they have supported countless learners by spending many hours in a car with them, ensuring they did the hours and practice they needed.

Without the dedication of these three tireless champions of road safety, many local youth would have found it difficult to get their licences.

Bill, Keith and Noel continue to be very active and highly sought after, within the Alpine shire L2P Program.

Alpine Shire Council said its L2P program has support over 140 learners to gain their licences within the Alpine Shire and without the dedicated mentors that freely give their time and knowledge, it wouldn’t happen.

Council reps appointed

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE LAST month’s council meeting saw Alpine Shire councillors appointed to committees and groups to enable good governance and decision making for 2024.

Council operates and participates on a range of special, advisory and external committees and groups.

Mayor Forsyth will remain on the Municipal Association of Victoria, with newly appointed deputy mayor Tony Keeble joining him.

Cr Forsyth will also be on the Hume Region Local Government Network, the Alpine Shire Council Audit and Risk Committee and the Alpine Shire Council finance committee.

Cr Sarah Nicholas will be on the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance with Cr Kelli Prime, and Rural Councils Victoria with Cr Tony Keeble.

Cr Ron Janas and Cr Keeble will be on the Alpine Shire Council finance committee with Cr Simon Kelley no longer wishing to be a member.

Cr Kelley also wished to be removed from the finance committee, Cr Keeble was added in his place.

Cr Janas and Cr Kelley were appointed to the Alpine Resilience Partnership.

Cr Katarina Hughes remains on the Alpine Children’s Services Inc and the L2P program.

The Reconciliation Action Plan working group has been removed from needing council representatives at this stage in its process.

Pony club celebrates 60 years

By BRODIE EVERIST THE Myrtleford Pony Club held their 60th anniversary rally last Saturday at the Myrtleford Recreation Reserve, with around 50 visitors and current and past members attending.

Club vice president and life member Karen Gasperotti said the event started at 9am with a collection of horse riding events.

Attendees had a morning tea and some continued riding until they succumbed to the hot weather at lunchtime.

After that was a barbecue lunch, Ms Gasperotti said, followed by club presentations and socialising until 3pm.

She said the Alpine Regional Horseman’s Association was also holding a competition at another part of the recreation reserve, so some club members watched

their event, and members of the horseman’s association also popped in to wish the club members well.

According to Ms Gasperotti, the pony club held its first rally at the Myrtleford Recreation Reserve in December 1963.

She said the range of attendees covered around 50 years of past club membership, including herself, as she joined the club over 50 years ago as a child.

She suspects she has passed on her love of horses to her children and grandchildren, who have also been club members.

“It’s just something that’s in your blood and passes on,” she said.

The club is currently seeking new members, with the new membership year commencing this January.

Christmas lunches for the community

CHRISTMAS COMMUNITY: Bright Christmas lunch organiser Henry Martin says it is available to anyone who is on their own this Christmas.

LOCAL groups will be holding free community lunches in Myrtleford and Bright this Christmas.

In Myrtleford, a committee of community members will be holding a lunch at the St Paul’s Church Hall, Clyde Street, on December 25, commencing 12:30pm.

Attendees are advised to contact church members Ray and Lorraine McCarthy on 0429 334 447 before Saturday December 16.

They said they have a very friendly driver who will pick people up and return them home after lunch if needed.

“This is an offer of good food, good company and good cheer, on the day when we keep the Christ light burning and celebrate the birth of Jesus,” Ms McCarthy said.

The lunch is sponsored by local service clubs.

In Bright, combined churches are expecting around 50-60 for their Christmas lunch from 12-2pm at the community centre next to the Bright Uniting Church, according to organiser Henry Martin.

Victorians warned if ‘you light it, you own it’ during fire season VICTORIANS are being urged to consider the consequences of their actions as part of a concentrated bid to avoid the ignition of reckless or accidental fires across the state this summer.

The ‘you light it, you own it’ campaign, a joint initiative of Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers Victoria, aims to remind residents of the penalties associated with fires, with those responsible for a fire which spreads out

of control liable to face up to 15 years in jail.

The maximum penalty for arson causing death in Victoria is 25 years imprisonment.

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Council (AFAC) recently stated parts of Australia were being urged to prepare for a bushfire season similar to the 2019/20 Black Summer, following a forecast of above average temperatures and below average

rainfall across the country.

“We want Victorians to stop and think before their actions cause a fire this summer,” Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith said.

“Bushfires can start from actions as simple as lighting a campfire or using farm machinery and power tools on a hot and windy day.

“No one wants to be responsible for risking lives from an out-of-control fire, so we want to encourage people

to make the right decisions.

“The forecast is for a hot summer and we want the community’s help to stop bushfires before they start.”

According to Crime Statistics Agency data for the year ending June 2023, there were 29 offences recorded in Victoria for causing a bushfire last financial year.

Victoria Police Detective Inspector, Chris Murray, of the Arson and Explosives Squad, said preventing

bushfires was everyone’s responsibility.

“For areas at risk of fire, expect to see a highly visible police presence, particularly during fire danger periods – expect to be spoken to by police and understand this, if you light a fire, you own it,” he said.

“Accidental and recklessly lit fires are just as devastating as those fires deliberately lit – the consequences and outcomes to the com-

munity are the same.

“You don’t want your actions to be the cause of a bushfire – ask yourself this, if the fire gets away from me, can I control it? If the answer is no, don’t light it.”

Glider’s long journey to recovery

By BRODIE EVERIST A RARE endangered greater glider was released last week by the team at Reach Out Wildlife Australia (ROWA) after being found by Myrtleford residents with inexplicable injuries and far from the creature’s usual habitat.

The glider was found around two months ago in a Prince Street backyard being terrorised by birds before residents intervened and called ROWA, a local wildlife rescue service.

ROWA owner and founder Danni Townsend-O’Neil said the glider’s tail had been broken in two places, one being a compound fracture, and the marsupial also had sore eyes.

Ms Townsend-O’Neil said the Prince Street residents had seen the glider being dragged by birds, but she did not believe this caused the broken tail, so how the glider

came to be in such a predicament remains a mystery.

“It’s very, very rare to see them down on the ground, you very rarely see them hit by cars because they spend their lives in the tops of the trees,” she said.

“We just wish she could talk because we have no idea how she has gotten there.”

The glider was affectionately named GG, after its informal species name and after Ms TownsendO’Neill’s grandmother.

She said a range of factors must be accounted for when selecting a release site, including the size and

shape of the eucalyptus tree and the presence of other gliders.

“We spotlighted for them to see what trees they were in, how many there were,” she said.

“You don’t want to overpopulate an area either, and you don’t want

to put them in an area where you don’t see any because there could be reasons for that.”

Ms Townsend-O’Neil said the glider took a little while to leave the carrier once they placed it at the base of a tree.

“She sat there for a little while, contemplating what she what she should do,” Ms Townsend-O’Neil said.

Before long, however, GG climbed the eucalyptus and watched her carers leave.

Ms Townsend-O’Neil said they will be keeping an eye on GG, which shouldn’t be too hard.

Greater gliders tend to leave their long, furry tails hanging as they sit on branches, but because of the treatment of her injuries GG’s tail was shaved, leaving it thin with a fluffy end.

“That will be a good spotter for us,” Ms Townsend-O’Neil said.

Record project funding thanks to community bank

Cooper Northy presented on the Alpine Cycling Club’s involvement with

the SALT (Sport and Life Training) program on youth leadership and mental health, made possible through funding from the branch’s grants program.

An upcoming project will see a partnership between Bright Rotary, TAFCO, Alpine Health, Alpine Shire, Community Bank Bright and local doctors, to deliver a mobile health bus facility initiative servicing local communities.

Students cross shire in charity trek

MARIAN College students ran into Myrtleford under a police escort last Friday in the Marian 100, the school’s annual relay from Mount Hotham to Myrtleford raising funds for Camp Quality.

The relay was made up of a series of five–kilometre legs, with a small group of students running each leg while others

travelled along the route in a bus.

After running across Memorial Park the students were welcomed by a group of cheering parents, teachers and St Mary’s Primary School students as they crossed the finish line.

IT is award season in Mount Beauty and the Over 50s Social Tennis group held their end of year get together on Tuesday, December 5.

President Gill Harrowfield presented two awards, The Nick Kyrgios award (we leave it to your imagination what this award is for) went to Maria Williams, a regular visitor from Melbourne, and the Player of the Year award went to Annie McCall, the most regular player (Tuesdays and Fridays) with the G.O.B. Group.

Annie is a master softball player with the Wodonga/ Albury competition, and a very keen sportswoman.

A life membership was awarded to president Gill Harrowfield recognising her contributions and achievements over the past 10 years.

The Kiewa Valley Historical Society held their 14th annual general meeting on December 7.

The committee was reelected with the addition of Henry Ziemnicki as an ordinary member.

The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a Life Membership to president Barb Pyle.

Barb is committed to the preservation of artefacts significant to the history of the Kiewa Valley.

Barb is a hands-on leader whose extensive knowledge of the people and history of the Kiewa Valley ensures the integrity of the society’s collection.

This year’s winner is Brian Rockford for his outstanding commitment to Alpine FM, particularly in grant application writing, that has secured enough funds to buy the outside broadcast van and the fit out.

Also a new program board, recording software, and new wiring for the station’s broadcast transmission.

Brian has attended every outside broadcast this year, being there from setting up to pulling down, going over and above on his volunteering efforts.

Brian’s expertise does not stop there, as a Lions Club member he did the lighting of all the trees in the downtown area, giving the town a fabulous display of fairy lights.

Haines backs action on regional mobile phone coverage INDEPENDENT federal MP for Indi Helen Haines has backed recommendations of a parliamentary inquiry into regional mobile phone coverage.

The ‘Connecting the country: Mission critical’ report makes 23 recommendations including guaranteeing minimum levels of mobile coverage, providing roaming across service providers during emergencies, acknowledging the need for continuous coverage along major transport routes, and multi-carrier sharing of mobile phone infrastructure.

“The recommendations in this report are a positive step forward for mobile phone connectivity in regional, rural and remote Australia, and I urge the Government to implement them,” Dr Haines said.

“The 30 per cent of people who live outside the major cities know too well the digi-

tal divide that exists between regional Australians and our city counterparts.

“That is why I support the recommendation for a universal service delivery obligation on mobile service providers, ensuring a minimum level of mobile phone service to all Australians regardless of where they live.

“Acting on the parliamentary committee’s advice could go a long way to bridging the gap for people who live, work and study in the regions, and those who are travelling through that rely on good mobile phone service.”

Dr Haines said she was supportive of the recommendations to establish a working group to investigate the possibility of mobile roaming across service providers during emergencies and agreed the Federal Government should fund infrastructure which supports multi-carrier

The parliamentary committee’s report, however, went well beyond the specifics of the terms of reference, recommending a review of the Mobile Black Spot Program to ensure it remains fit for purpose, and calling for a detailed governmentled region-by-region mobile coverage audit.

THERE will be significant disruptions to V/Line train services today (Wednesday, December 13) due to planned industrial action.

Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) members employed by V/Line will take protected industrial action in the form of a work stoppage between 3am and 7am, disrupting V/ Line train services across the state.

No V/Line trains will run during the stoppage with delays of two hours or more and significant delays are expected throughout the morning as trains get back into position for the normal timetable.

V/Line train passengers are advised to avoid travelling on the morning of Wednesday, December 13 and to only travel if necessary.

A very limited coach replacement service will run for essential journeys until 8am. Replacement coaches will not stop at Metro train stations.

Passengers who need to travel should expect significant delays and plan their day accordingly.

Motorists travelling on key routes between regional centres and Melbourne should also expect increased traffic.

Christmas magic still strong in Myrtleford

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE LOCAL kids still have time to get a letter to Santa this Christmas, with the Lions Club’s letterbox.

Member Lorraine Piazza enjoys seeing a little bit of magic remain for Myrtleford children.

“It’s a lovely community idea, we love seeing the kids get excited over Santa writing them back,” she said.

“The number of letters has declined over the years; we only received around 20 so far this year and three years ago we were doing 150.

“I’m glad it is still going; a big thank you to the late Michael Kerlin who was the main instigator 25 years ago who really pushed for it and it’s just gone on from there.

“We’re still getting generations come through now; children of people who used to write in to us which is special.

“The biggest thing is we need parents to make sure letters have a name and address on them; Santa is clever but it does make it tricky without a return address.”

Line in the sand moment addresses drink driving myths

By RYAN MALCOLM HUME region residents are being urged to take extra caution to refrain from drinkdriving on the roads this holiday season, with the region’s road toll already climbing to its highest since 2018.

A new Transport Accident Commission (TAC) road safety campaign is set to bust the myths which exist around how to stay under .05 when drinking alcohol, amid recent TAC road safety monitor data indicating a “concerning” 48pc of Victorians would still consider driving after two or more alcoholic drinks.

So far this year, 57 lives have been lost throughout the Hume region, with Shepparton (14), Moira (12) and Indigo, Mansfield, Strathbogie and Wangaratta shires (five each) reflecting the bulk of road deaths.

According to the TAC, alcohol remains the most represented drug in fatally injured drivers, with close to one in every five drivers or riders killed in Victoria being over

the legal alcohol limit.

The road safety campaign combats myths around the speed at which people drink, how many standard drinks are appropriate per hour, if people have had enough water, how much people have eaten, as well as body size.

It also places a spotlight on one of the mandatory penalties for all drink drivers caught in Victoria – having an interlock device installed.

Transport Accident Commission chief executive officer Tracey Slatter said the campaign was about embracing a culture where driving after drinking any alcohol was not considered normal.

“As we head into summer and the festive season, this campaign is a timely reminder to Victorians that drinking and driving don’t mix,” she said.

“Many people think they can manage their blood-alcohol level by following a set of vague rules handed down through generations, but the only way to avoid the risk entirely is to completely separate

drinking and driving.”

The campaign comes as Victoria Police recently erected its annual lives lost Christmas tree at its Melbourne CBD headquarters, which is adorned with baubles honouring those who have lost their lives on Victorian roads this year.

The 274 baubles adorning the tree as of Wednesday is the highest number since 2008.

Road policing Assistant Commissioner, Glenn Weir, said he didn’t want to see the tree further decorated.

“It’s a stark reminder of the importance of taking care on the roads,” he said.

“I’m really appealing to everyone between now and the end of the year to take care, have conversations with your loved ones as they’re going out on the roads – if you’re in a car, you’ve got a responsibility to make sure you get to your destination safely.

“We want every Victorian to remember Christmas this year for a good reason, not for one of tragedy.”

STOP AND THINK: Police, TAC urge caution on roadways this festive season.

Clock is ticking on small business lodgment penalty amnesty LATE lodgment penalties will be remitted under the amnesty which ends on December 31 2023 for small business income tax returns, fringe benefits tax (FBT) returns and business activity statements (BAS) originally due between December 1, 2019 and February 28, 2022.

More than 14,000 small businesses have taken advantage of the amnesty since it kicked off on June 1 2023, with more than $48 million in failure to lodge (FTL) penalties remitted.

Directors who bring their company lodgments up to date can also have FTL penalties remitted if they rely on company lodgments to finalise their own tax affairs.

This applies to eligible lodgments made between June 1 and December 31 2023.

ATO Assistant Commissioner, Jillian Kitto said this amnesty is the perfect opportunity for small businesses to re-engage with their tax affairs and get back on track with their lodgment obligations without penalties.

“All you need to do to take advantage of this opportunity is lodge, and we will remit any failure to lodge penalty,” Ms Kitto said.

“Having up-to-date lodgments is important, as it will give you a better understanding of your true financial position and ensure you can make informed decisions about your priorities and future planning.”

contact the ATO directly to seek assistance with finalising their tax obligations, which may include lodging overdue returns, cancelling their ABN and paying any amounts overdue.

While penalties will be remitted under the amnesty, if a business finds themselves with a tax debt after their overdue forms are lodged, it’s important they pay in full to avoid further interest charges or check the ATO website to see if they are eligible for a payment plan.

BRIGHT Centenary Park and the Ovens River was a popular spot last Sunday afternoon as locals and visitors sought to escape the heat.

While the temperature only reached 31.3 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, according to the TAFCO weather monitor in Porepunkah, the high

humidity likely made the weekend feel even hotter.

In Porepunkah the average humidity was 74.9 per cent on Saturday and 61.4 per cent on Sunday, reaching a maximum of 99 percent on Saturday.

Georgia Nicholds and her family were at the splashpark, visiting Bright from Melbourne for a preChristmas holiday.

“Kids love the splashpark,” she said.

“It’s a big drawcard for us to come – that and the mountain biking.”

Melbourne resident Hannah Bryant was resting on a picnic blanket under a tree in Centenary Park.

“It’s an easy way to spend the weekend,” she said.

“There’s no better way to escape the heat.”

DINNER Plain’s event lineup for 2024 is looking full following $22,000 in funding allocated at the November Alpine Shire council meeting.

The recommendation before council saw funding distributed to support an outdoor cinema event, the winter markets, sled dog spring and the official opening of Big Muster Distilling Company.

The Dinner Plain Outdoor Cinema Event and Dinner Plain Winter Markets received $5000, the official opening of Big Muster Distilling Company received $2000 and the Dinner Plain Sled Dog Sprint received $10,000.

The recommendation also allocated up to $25,000 of the Dinner Plain Events budget to support the delivery of the Dinner Plain Easter Festival and snow season opening weekend festivities, with budget and event specifics to be coordinated by council’s events team, and delegated authority to council’s chief executive officer to distribute residual or unspent funds to a cumulative total of $60,000.

Council provides annual financial support to events across the Alpine Shire through its Event Funding Program.

Applications for this program open in May each year.

Two applications were received for Dinner Plain events during the first round of applications in May. The Alpine Environmental Workshop was allocated $5000 through that funding round.

Given the Events Funding Program’s proximity to the start of the snow season, a second round of Dinner Plain Event Funding was opened in September to ensure businesses, event operators and community members had the opportunity to apply.

Four applications were received during the September/ October round of funding.

As the Acting Principal of St Mary’s, it is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to our new Foundation students joining us in 2024. This year, we bid farewell to our Year 6 students, wishing them all the best as they transition to secondary school.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, who continually strive for excellence in teaching and learning, ensuring the best outcomes for our students.

St Mary’s NAPLAN results continue to excel, scoring well above the state average. This success is a testament to the dedication and expert knowledge of our teachers in delivering explicit instruction in reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics. We believe that a strong foundation in these areas enables students to explore other areas of the curriculum through directed discovery.

This year, St Mary’s Primary School celebrated ‘100 Years of Education’ in Myrtleford. The staff at St Mary’s are very proud of all that has been achieved over the years. Our teachers are committed to providing excellent teaching, catering to the needs of each and every student.

Our students have shone brightly in the arts, winning accolades in the Mary Mackillop Art Competition. Our music program and choir achieved great success at the Albury Eisteddfod and produced an enjoyable ‘Very Aussie Christmas’ concert, both of which are commendable achievements.

Through the Languages program, students enjoyed engaging in Italian performances and the Italian Day feast, both cultural highlights of the year. In sports, our students have excelled, qualifying for division, regional, and state-level events in various disciplines.

Our staff’s support for students with diverse learning needs has been remarkable, fostering an environment where every child can achieve their full potential. Our aim is to deliver a curriculum to each student in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Our commitment to the school charisms of compassion, hospitality, and social justice has been evident through successful initiatives like the Social Justice Caritas fundraiser, aiding those less fortunate around the globe. Respect and dignity for all is paramount, especially during such devastating times for many countries worldwide. It’s crucial for our children to understand different perspectives, listen, and show empathy. These skills have been instilled in our Year Six students, who live by the value of always being kind.

As we close this year, I thank our families for their unwavering support and trust. Together, we have navigated challenges and triumphs, particularly during our principal Kitty Hancock’s absence. The school continues to focus on our mission, a testament to our amazing staff’s steadfast dedication to our students. We send our best wishes to Kitty for a speedy recovery. Your presence is greatly missed, and we eagerly anticipate your return.

PAULINE McPHERSON We have had a great year at Whorouly Primary School with five new Foundation students beginning their education at our school and shortly we will farewell our two fantastic Year 6 school leaders leaving as confident and responsible young people.

Our dedicated teachers and support staff, ensure we provide small class sizes for our literacy and numeracy programs to enhance learning for every child. Our specialist programs of Italian, Art, Library and Music/Science are important features of our school’s curriculum.

Our classroom programs have been enriched through camps and excursions to Canberra, and Fifteen Mile Creek and the junior class had their own special evening at school. Our extra-curricular activities such as the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program,

Breakfast Club, STEAM Challenges, the Bluearth and swimming programs have been very important. Access to the Sporting Schools Funds has given our students the opportunity to receive expert coaching in tennis, AFL, netball and bike education.

Highlights include our annual Well Being Day, the Marmungan Athletics Sports, our Book Week dress up day and the Cluster days. Our family nights included an SAKG welcome, a family STEAM Challenge and Library After Dark which are always supported by our families. We finished the year with a wonderful whole school Magical Mystery Tour musical. An extremely busy year!

We have wonderfully hardworking parents and carers whose fundraising efforts allow us to provide many programs and resources and our dedicated School Council ensure our school can provide the best opportunities for our students.

This year we commence our Outside School Hours Care Program providing care before and after school and a holiday program. This has been an important addition to our school to help support our families.

We also work closely with the Ovens Learning Community and the Whorouly Preschool to ensure we have a quality transition program and we look forward to our new Foundation students starting in 2024.

I would like to thank everyone who has supported our school in 2023, from the Whorouly community to the very many local businesses who donate to the school. I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas break.

These two years have reminded us how important it is to care for each other, in particular the more vulnerable members of our community. At Myrtleford P12 College our core responsibility will always be to improve the reading, writing and mathematics skills of our students. However, this period has underlined the role we as a school play in providing a safe environment for our students. We are very fortunate to have excellent education options in Myrtleford. NAPLAN and VCE results show that students who stay in our community, attending local schools with small class sizes, taught by teachers who know them and their families well, achieved better results than students who travel hours each day.

With the generous support of Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVIC) funding, the Rural City of Wangaratta is thrilled to invite local young people to Bush Boogie - an evening of music, and super cool activities.

DJ Tygress is set to keep the energy high with an eclectic mix of tunes, ensuring a dance floor that’s alive and buzzing throughout the night.

The Breeze Dancers will be on hand to teach some toetapping country style dance moves.

Junkyard Beats transform ordinary household items into musical instruments that create a booty shaking, electric atmosphere that makes you want to get up and move.

They are renowned for their high-energy routines that include drumming, body percussion, dance,

junk percussion, circus, and hilarious skits.

A photobooth will provide the perfect opportunity to snap and share those memorable moments with friends old and new.

Disaster aftermath support for women A LOCAL women’s support agency will use $120,000 to continue a project that supports regional women especially in the aftermath of extreme traumatic events like bushfires and floods.

Women’s Health Goulburn North East (WHGNE) has been funded $40k per annum over three years to establish ‘Women Gathering in Goulburn and North East Victoria’, a project that will help bring together and support the health and wellbeing of regional women.

“We are really pleased with this funding, particularly as it runs over a multiyear period,” WHGNE CEO Amanda Kelly said.

Patients encouraged to trial locally

CLINICAL trials and teletrials at Northeast Health Wangaratta have been well received locally as more Victorians diagnosed with cancer have been encouraged to join trials.

A new study released by Cancer Council Victoria found while more than 36,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year, only 5.5 per cent join a clinical trial.

The study also showed patients who do take part in clinical trials often have better outcomes, but just 22 per cent of trial participants were from regional Victoria.

In a growing effort to encourage more Australians living in rural, regional or remote areas to take part in clinical trials, the Victorian Department of Health rolled out the Clinical Trials Research Support Service in 2018, with the Federal Government then funding the Australian Teletrial Program (ATP) in 2022.

Teletrials enable delivery of aspects of a clinical trial closer to home for participants, particularly in

Northeast Health Wangaratta has been offering clinical trials since 2019, as well as teletrials since 2022 under the ATP, coordinated by the research at the Margaret Boyd Education Centre.

Clinical trial coordinator Nicole Humphreys said the burden of travel was a big barrier for patients to take part in trials, but now they can participate in a majority of the trial locally.

“For instance the bowel cancer trial we’ve got going

under this program, they can have the chemotherapy here in Wangaratta and see their normal oncologist and doctor, and then only have to go to Melbourne for the radiation or the surgery they might require in the trial,” she said.

“So then they’re not disadvantaged; they can have what hopefully will be a more effective treatment and still stay locally.

“That boosts recruitment; people are more likely to go onto a trial now they can do most of it at home.”

Along with cancer patients, Northeast Health also offers clinical trials for patients in stroke management, anesthetics, dementia and sepsis.

Ms Humphreys said the trials have been well received locally since their introduction, with the program currently experiencing a 90 per cent acceptance rate for those who are eligible to take part in trials.

“We’ve had really good reception from our patients so far, often a little bit of surprise of what we’re able to offer them here in Wangaratta, people think they are something that only happens in the city,” she said.

“We’ve got quite a range and a lot of doctors who are keen to get involved in giving patients the best current care so it’s been great.”

FORD EVEREST REACHING NEW HEIGHTS

Rear-wheel drive Sport.

By CHRIS RILEY SOME of Ford Ranger’s magic must have rubbed off on Everest because it’s now one of the top 10 best-selling cars in Australia, second only to the Toyota Prado in its segment.

The last time we drove Everest we were pleasantly surprised by the wagon and the latest, third generation model is no exception, in keeping with the market response.

It’s ironic because sometimes we critics can bag the crap out of a car, then stand back amazed as it sells its socks off.

Go figure.

STYLING Everest adopts the same “tough” look as the Ranger, bluff and squared off where the previous model was rounded.

It’s more muscular in appearance and targeted at blokes, and is light years from the Ford Territory that pioneered this segment for the brand 20 years ago.

The rear is obviously different, with broad, strong horizontal lines.

The Sport grade has proved popular and is now available with a choice of 3.0-litre V6 or 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesels, together with rear- or allwheel drive.

Sport is readily identified by the black treatment that everyone seems to want these days, with black trim, black wheels and black raised lettering for the badges.

And it’s the only grade

available in the exclusive colour Blue Lightning, as pictured.

Standard kit includes 20inch alloys, side steps, LED head, tail and daytime running lights, electric parking brake, keyless entry and start, auto lights and wipers, auto high beam, speed sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, auto dimming rear view mirror, front and rear parking sensors.

Prices start from $53,490 for the 2.0-litre rear-drive Ambiente.

Trend is priced from $60,990, Sport from $62,990, Wildtrak from $72,804 and Platinum from $77,000, all before on road costs.

Our test vehicle was the rear drive Sport with the 2.0-litre engine.

If you want all wheel drive, it’s packaged with the V6 and comes at a cost of $70,590.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The four produces 154kW of power at 3750 rpm and 500Nm of torque from 17502000 rpm, while the larger 3.0-litre V6 delivers 184kW at 3250 rpm and 600Nm from 1750-2250 rpm.

Both are paired with a 10-speed auto, with four drive modes in the reardrive Sport: Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul and Slippery.

SAFETY ANCAP says Everest’s five-star safety rating is based mainly on test results for the Ford Ranger utility on which it is based, with supplementary information

from Ford (not sure why).

It has nine airbags, including driver and passenger knee airbags along with the latest centre airbag which provides added protection to front seat occupants in side impact crashes is also standard.

There’s also a rear-view camera, Autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User, Junction Assist and AEB Backover) as well as a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK), and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) are standard.

There are five top tether child seat anchors and another two Isofix anchors.

DRIVING Everest is big, at 4914mm long and 1842mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2900mm.

It has 230mm of ground clearance whether it’s the 4x4 version or not and this model tips the scales at 2295kg.

Everest comes with a choice of engines depending on the grade.

There’s also rear and allwheel drive to factor in.

Ambiente and Trend kick off the range with a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel, while Wildtrak and Platinum bring a Ford-sourced 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel.

Mid-range Sport can be had with either -- RWD with the four, AWD with the six.

This model is fitted with 255/55 series Goodyear Wrangler Territory HT road tyres.

A full-size alloy spare is provided.

Whichever model you choose, it can tow a 3500kg load, but there’s a thing called gross combined mass to consider and the V6 is probably the better option for towing.

Looking and running your hands over surfaces in the cabin reveals plenty of hard, cheap, generic plastic trim, detracting from the ambience.

The honeycomb air vents are a case in point.

But most eyes will be focused on the Tesla-like touchscreen which provides plenty of real estate for satnav and secondary controls, although we’re not sure why it is necessary to have both physical and electronic controls for the aircon.

The system can be slow to boot and at one point the screen blacked out for 30 seconds during which it remained unresponsive.

The four-cylinder twin turbo diesel is basically the same unit that powered the Raptor five years ago with a little tweaking.

In that context and producing 500Nm of torque from a low 1750 rpm, it is anything but disappointing.

The V6 is just icing on the cake.

Unlike most diesels, the four feels smooth and quiet, with a real spring to its step.

There are no gear change paddles.

Instead, a thumb-controlled rocker switch at the top of the shift lever performs the same function.

It’s okay for occasional changes, but no good for long term use.

With an 80-litre fuel tank, combined fuel consumption for this model is a claimed 7.1L/100km.

We were getting as little as 7.8L/100km after almost 1200km of mixed driving.

That’s pretty good for a vehicle this size.

SUMMING UP Some may not like the styling and the heavy steering made my wife’s arms ache, but overall, it’s pretty good.

The rear-wheel drive 2.0-litre Sport could be the one to get, because it’s visually appealing and comes

with everything you want and nothing you can’t do without.

It represents a considerable savings over the offroad version which the majority of people will never use anyway.

Saints fight hard, but fall short in decider MYRTLEFORD’S dream run in the North East Men’s Country Basketball League came to an end on Saturday night, downed 88-100 in the grand final by Benalla.

The underdogs heading into the battle, Myrtleford wowed the largely Benallafavouring crowd with an incredible first quarter of basketball, taking a four point advantage into the second term.

Benalla fought back hard, led by Eric Miraflores (30 points for the match), and when Levi Young went down with an ankle injury midway through the game, the Saints were up against the wall, nine points down heading into the final quarter.

Coach Sam Gebauer said while the result wasn’t ideal, he was immensely proud of his team’s effort throughout the match and the season.

“We’ve all had a bit of time to be upset about the loss, but ultimately, looking back on that game, those boys went out there and worked hard, but we were just outclassed on the day, outplayed on the day,” he said.

“Benalla’s experience on that stage showed.

played at the highest level, but we haven’t, as this specific group, been on that stage before, and Benalla’s done it for a couple of consecutive years now.

“It shows, throughout the game they didn’t let the intensity of it, the heat of it, get the better of them.

“I think at certain times we lost that composure, even if only for a few minutes, but that’s all Benalla needed to hit a couple big shots and steal back that momentum.”

While the grand prize eluded the squad as a whole, some players were recognised for their exceptional seasons on the court.

Jalen and Tyler Barker were named in the All Star Five for the North East Men’s

conference, while Tyler was awarded a trophy for Defensive Player of the Year.

Having stepped into the coaching role this year and taken the squad to the biggest match of the year, Gebauer said the Saints were definitely on the right track to take out the title very soon.

“Walking in this season, coming off the back of a very successful season last season for this team, taking it that one step further and really gunning it with the big guys in the league, we have to remember there is a process to this,” he said.

“A really exciting part about coaching this group was the fact that I knew that as a team they were capable, and still are ca-

“It’s about finding the right offensive system and defensive structure, timing, chemistry, finding everything and getting it right just so we can utilise this group.

“I genuinely believe with all my heart that this group still has what it takes to be an absolute powerhouse in this league for years to come. “ With the season done and dusted, and Christmas right around the corner, Gebauer and the Saints have earned some time off before preparations for next season begin.

“I genuinely think if we retain the same or a similar group that we can make a run, and we will make a run and go all the way next season,” Gebauer said.

“I just really want to thank the volunteers who put the work in to make this happen.

“My assistant coach and MDBA president Kory (Batt), he went to hell and back to make sure this season went as smoothly as possible.

“We sat in that stadium in Shepparton, which was essentially a Benalla home game, filled with Benalla (supporters), they had the Home locker room and bench, and we felt like an away team – to look into the crowd and see a good third of that crowd covered in red, it was unbelievable, they were so loud.

“They were unreal all season, and a highlight of all of our seasons was getting to interact with those people.”

District representative side edge home THE Cricket Albury Wodonga senior representative season is well and truly underway, as the CAW District team took down their CAW Hume counterparts by one wicket in the opening round of the Country Plate on Sunday.

Mount Beauty cricketers Patrick Dodd and Daniel Saville made the starting 11 at Xavier College, with Dodd holding onto a catch to claim the first wicket of the day, Hume’s Chris Hutchison dismissed for one run.

Hume continued on, finding the gaps to make it to 7/193 from their 50 overs, with Matthew Heagney top scoring with an unbeaten 45*.

Batting at one and three, Mount Beauty’s cricketers set the tone for the run chase, with Dodd making 20 from 12 rocks and Saville crafting 49 from 78 balls.

However, the wickets started to fall and the game narrowed, and with scores level with one wicket in hand, Mitchell Maginness faced up to Joe Merkel.

After a dot ball, Maginness edged it to the keeper, was dropped, and scampered through for a single to seal the win.

Hume and District will face off again this Sunday.

Under-strength Myrtleford bowlers take the win MYRTLEFORD’S A1 team travelled to Benalla with two key players missing from the side, but in a crunch game, came home winners with three of the four rinks outscoring the opposition.

Mary Tragardh skippered her rink to a 27/17 win, with a special mention to Jill Bates who came up for her first game in A1 and did a great job along with Graeme Piazza and Cheryl Lewis.

Mick Dwyer’s rink came from behind to win 24/18 with a good contribution by Rod Mitchell, Denis Piazza and Geoff Dyt. Lance Symons team led all day to secure a hard fought 23/17 two points ably assisted

by Greg Robbins, Ady Villella and Jim Murtagh.

Much credit must also go to Wally Dunstone’s rink who pushed the opposition all day but fell short 15/21 shots thanks to the perseverance of Marino Candusio, Les Brown, and Mikey Clayton.

The A1 team sits fourth on the ladder, 14 points clear of Wangaratta in fifth spot and with the two clubs meeting this coming Saturday at Myrtleford, the match could cement the home team in the top four.

All eyes will be watching the result of Corowa RSL (third) v YMGCR (first).

A win to Myrtleford and a loss to RSL could see Myrtleford jump up into third spot, a position the club has not held in the Saturday A1

Pennant for approximately 15 years, with only a further four games after Christmas before the finals commence.

The B1 team was outclassed by second team St James 69/12 to 41 shots and just two points, however the team remains in fourth on the ladder.

Only Jeff Stagg’s team including Graeme ‘Acky’ Attwood, Wayne Langdon and Noel Rowe enjoyed a winning rink 23/12.

The B3 team had a bye.

All three teams will be hungry for a big win this Saturday going into the Christmas break, as all the members are heading for the Savoy Club on Sunday evening to share in the club’s Christmas festivities.

Fun and games at Mount Beauty Golf Club WEDNESDAY, December 6 was a lovely day for golf with eight ladies taking on the back nine holes with a stableford comp.

The winner was Helen Whittaker (39) with 16 points, runnerup was Ruth Rynehart (50) with 15 points, and NTP second hit on 18th was Gill Harrowfield.

A group of 12 men took on the back nine on Wednesday, which

saw Darren ‘Rattles’ Flay come in with 19 points defeating Sam Perry on a count back.

Next in was Joe Mero with 18 points with third placing being divided between three players on 17 points, Ron Gallagher, Ross Rynehart and Peter Hertzog - NTP on the 17th was Peter Hertzog and on the 18th was Ross Rynehart.

“Toby Derrick, in his first game for us this season – he’s been playing in Melbourne – he bowled really well with Ethan Brown who’s Mr Reliable with the ball.

“Graham (Beer) has moved down to first change in the last couple of weeks and he’s really found his spot.

“All of our bowlers chipped in, I think ‘Gosi’ (Gosal) only bowled four overs and Sam Piazza likewise, and those two are our leading wicket-takers.

“For other blokes to step up like Conner and Cooper Thomason was really positive.”

IT was a clinical display from Mount Beauty’s first XI squad on Saturday, dispatching Barnawartha-Chiltern with ease to claim a 116-run victory.

The Power batted first and soared to 7/189 from their 40 overs, before knocking the Miners over for just 73 runs in under 25 overs.

However, it was far from a smooth start with the willow for Mount Beauty, after skipper Dan Saville hit the first ball of the innings wide of the square leg fielder and called for a tight single, which resulted in Paddy Dodd being run out without facing a ball.

Saville and the Power settled in and kept rotating the strike, prioritising keeping wickets in hand while still maintaining a healthy run rate.

Todd Jeanes was outstanding with the willow, launching three maximums on his way to 66*, while Saville (31) and Frank Iaria (17) pitched in with solid contributions.

With the runs on the board and a substantial total to bowl to, Mount Beauty’s seam attack went about their work, with the fielding claiming the first wicket of the chase with a run out.

The pressure was on in the field, combining with tight lines and lengths from Ethan Brown and Toby Derrick to keep the wickets falling.

The Miners limped to 7/51, as all of Mount Beauty’s bowlers picked up at least one wicket, with Shannon Wilson securing the victory.

Saville said it was one of the best team performances he’d seen this year.

“Often you might get a few contributors with the bat and ball or the field, and although a few people missed out, I genuinely think that we had 11 contributors on the day, and that’s with bat, ball or in the field,” he said.
