Grant to fund skills
Alpine p Multi Skill Group p received almost $ $20,000 , for a dedicated cabin workspace p from FRRR
By BRODIE EVERIST BRIGHT learning hub, the Alpine Multi Skill Group (ASMG), has received almost $20,000 for a dedicated cabin workspace in the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal’s (FRRR) latest round of community grants. President and founder of AMSG, Jessica Short, said they were grateful and pleasantly surprised by the $19,750 grant. “As a regional community, we’ve been affected by quite a few extreme weather events and this is an opportunity for us to reconnect the community, provide some opportu-
nities to learn,” she said. She said the money will go towards a 3m x 3m space next to the Bright United Men’s Shed to provide 24hour access for their members that can be used for meetings and potentially host workshops. The exact location for the workspace is yet to be determined, but Ms Short expects it will be built in around 6-8 months. According to Ms Short, the group started working in the Bright United Men’s Shed, but branched out into a broad skill-learning group that works with local groups and businesses.
She said they have recently run workshops on pottery, they are currently running a mountain biking skills workshop, and have a food and gardening workshop planned. “Where we can, we subsidise them or we run them at an incredibly low cost,” she said. “Everything goes back into the men’s shed or to the workshop to provide materials. “We want to try and continue that and keep it as sustainable as possible and attract more people.” ASMG is one of 18 community groups to receive
grants of between $4040 and $20,000 in FRRR’s latest grant round, in partnership with insurance companies Suncorp and AAMI. According to FRRR, Suncorp Group pledged $1 million to FRRR in 2021 for a dedicated Rebuilding Futures program to support Australian communities impacted by significant natural disasters. This round of the program has awarded $300,781 to 18 remote, rural and regional not-for-profits (NFPs) in Victorian communities impacted by the flooding events that took place between October 2022 and January 2023.
Nina O’Brien, disaster resilience and recovery lead at FRRR, said this round of grants is further confirmation of the long-term impacts of natural disasters. “In this round of grants, we’re seeing projects that are about building community amenities and improving infrastructure but there’s also an emphasis on initiatives that are about building community resilience and promoting social wellbeing,” she said. “The floods have had a huge emotional toll on the people in these communities, yet they’re still determined to build back and
become even more resilient than before, which really is inspiring to see.” Suncorp Group chief executive officer, Steve Johnston, said the grants would help support community-led recovery in the impacted areas. “We are supporting affected Victorian communities through the Rebuilding Futures program - to not just build back, but to build back better than before, making them even more resilient.” To get involved with the Alpine Multi Skill Group contact alpinemultiskill@ gmail.com or contact their Facebook group.
