According to the committee, the lighting equipment is industry standard, meaning not only can it be used by touring professionals, but they can also use it for training students and community members.

Members of the committee said they are hoping to do a partnership with Bright P12 College for drama students to volunteer at the courthouse and learn

to use the equipment.

“If they go on to further study, and they go to university, they’ve got grounding in some good lighting systems,” Ms Packham said.

“It could be come a fantastic training hub.”

The live streaming cameras also provide an array of options for the courthouse.

Performances can be live streamed online - increasing opportunities for ticket sales - or recorded, giving the courthouse the potential to sell DVDs, or offer acting groups and schools a means

The committee has also replaced flip-out seating with 30 new padded chairs, a complement to the 30 they already had.

And the new staging and seating are portable, giving the auditorium far more flexibility in the types of function that can held there.

But despite the number of upgrades the courthouse has received over the past years, the committee isn’t resting yet.

They are looking for

funding to provide an audio system for the courthouse auditorium and acoustic treatment, including acoustic panels and black theatre drapes.

There are also plans for outdoor lighting and a car park upgrade.

According to the committee, the venue has hosted events for the Bright Festival of Photography, while next year they will be hosting Australian singer/songwriter Jack Botts and the Bright Cabaret and Comedy Festival.

Running for a cause A 50-strong group of Marian College students ran into Myrtleford under a glaring sun last Friday in the final leg of the Marian 100 - the school’s 100 kilometre relay from Mount Hotham to Marian College to mark the final day of their school year.

Bedecked in pink t-shirts emblazoned with sponsors, the students entered Myrtleford at around 2:45pm to sounds of ‘Eye of the Tiger’, running on the Great Alpine Road with a police escort before turning up Clyde Street and making their way to Marian College.

“On the mountain it was beautiful - the air was still cold.

“But when we got down the hill it started getting hot and I think a lot of us got

According to teacher and Marian 100 co-coordinator Davina Perkins, the students had been training two lunchtimes a week during the final school term for the relay, which raises money for Camp Quality, a charity for children impacted by cancer.

The relay was made up of a series of five-kilometre legs, with a small group of students running each leg while the others were

travelling the route t lli along l th t iin a bus.

For the final leg into Myrtleford all students met at the former Myrtleford butter factory and ran as a group.

Sam said he completed five legs of the journey about 25 kilometres.

He said it felt amazing to finish the relay.

“We put so much effort into it over the last few months,” he said.

“Everyone did a great job.

“To everyone who sponsored and organised this day - it was fantastic.”

The students had stayed

at a accommodation at Mount Hotham the night M before and began the relay b at 7am.

Teacher and relay cocoordinator Tony Cuskelly said conditions had been “absolutely idyllic”.

“It was a beautiful sunrise,” he said.

“Not a breath of wind up there.”

It was the first Marian 100 since 2019, due to COVID19-related restrictions, and Mr Cuskelly said he had been worried the annual relay was over.

“I thought the Marian 100 may have ended three or four years ago, I really

did,” he said.

“It’s the sort of event that needs momentum and enthusiastic staff, staff that were prepared to put themselves to the sword for two lunchtimes for about 15 weeks.”

Mr Cuskelly also thanked the local business sponsors for their willingness to support the event.

“The sponsors have come out big time,” he said.

According to Ms Perkins, as of Monday morning they had not completely assessed the total raised from the relay, however, she said the event usually raises between $5-6000.

Spring rainfall numbers no surprise

By ANDY WILSON THE Bureau of Meteorology has published weather data for spring, and it is no surprise that previous Alpine rainfall records have been surpassed during the last three months.

Both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek weather stations recorded over two-and-a-half times the monthly average rainfall for November, with Mt Hotham receiving 395mm.

The previous highest rainfall for Mt Hotham in November was 291mm, set in 2011.

The average monthly temperatures at both sites were lower than their respective averages for all three months with the temperature at Falls Creek for October dropping by 2.1 degrees.

Although Mt Hotham Airport’s rainfall in September and October changed very little from

previous years, November received 140.6mm which is almost twice the fiveyear average.

While the La Nina oscillation continues to cause more rain in Victoria’s north east, three other phenomena contributed equally to the local weather.

The Indian oscillation dipole (IOD) above the Indian Ocean, southern annular mode (SAM) south of Tasmania, and Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) along the equator are all now in recession which will result in less upcoming rainfall in the Alpine Valley.

Melbourne University climatologist Dr Andrew King said that although the outlook is still favouring a wetter summer than usual, the rainfall will be much less than it was in spring.

in summer but more in spring and winter,” Dr King said.

“The SAM is still in the positive but is forecast to go back to neutral, and the MJO works in much shorter time scales,” he said.

“La Nina is also heading toward neutral but will linger a while by the looks of it,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone would argue that forecasts for a wet spring were wrong, but another thing to note is that summer rainfall comes normally in storms, so larger scale weather systems are harder to forecast with such oneoff events,” he said.

“In summer, we tend to get a month’s worth of rain in just a few days.

“These systems all interact in complicated ways that we don’t fully understand yet, but when combined, as in this last spring, yes, they cause much more rain.”

Local man makes no plea on COVID-19 breaches

By BRODIE EVERIST A LOCAL man appearing at Myrtleford Magistrates Court last Friday told the court he was unable to make a plea relating to alleged breaches of COVID-19 public health directions in 2021.

The defendant said he had not received the charges and had only

learned of them days earlier, meaning he could not make a plea.

According to the man, apparently reading from an affidavit of service, the charge sheets had been thrown into the garden by someone living at his address while he was in Noosa.

The defendant said when he arrived back at his address in October

he had no knowledge of the charges.

“Had it been eaten by snails in the garden, had it blown away - I don’t know,” he said.

He will be facing a contested hearing on June 22.

The defendant also said he will issue a section 78B notice for the hearing, relating to cases which may require constitutional interpretation.

The man had previously applied to prosecute Premier Daniel Andrews under charges the premier was “concealing an overt act of treason” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That application was thrown out of court at the Myrtleford Magistrates Court in December last year.

A 36-YEAR-old Tawonga man has suffered lifethreatening injuries in a car crash on the Tawonga Gap Road last Saturday evening.

According to Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police, the driver of the white Ford Ranger appears to have driven onto the dirt shoulder on a right hand bend and overcorrected, causing the car to tip over and slide into a bank on the other side of the road.

He said the crash occurred around 1.2km north of the Great Alpine Road and was attended by members of the Wangaratta Highway Patrol.

There were no other passengers in the car.

According to Snr Sgt Incoll, as of Monday afternoon the man was on life support.

According to Bright SES controller Graham Gales, the SES assisted police with lighting and traffic management at the crash site.

Mayor flags cuts in government funding

By BRODIE EVERIST ALPINE Shire mayor John Forsyth has said he expects less government funding opportunities for local projects - and one local government association agrees.

At the November 8 council meeting, where Cr Forsyth was elected mayor, he said shire needs to become more resilient due to the risk of funding cuts.

“We are faced with a lot of funding cuts - we’ve had three major funding cuts I think just recently,” he said.

“One of the things we have really got to do is make sure we are resilient and we can roll with the punches as they arrive, and I think we’re going to get a few of them.”

When he spoke to the Myrtleford Times/Alpine Observer, Cr Forsyth clarified the funding cuts were referring to three unsuccessful funding applications by the shire - the shire-wide Tracks and Trails Masterplan, the Dederang Recreation Reserve Master Plan and the Kiewa Valley trail extension.

“Alpine Shire officers were really confident that we would get the funding to do those pieces of work,” he told the Myrtleford Times/ Alpine Observer.

“I think it possibly is becoming a little bit more indicative of where the government sits with the amount of funds that they’ve got available to

throw around the regions.

“We have to be a little bit cognisant of the fact that coming up in 2023, and 2024, there may be fewer funding opportunities.”

However, Cr Forsyth said they did receive a successful funding application for the concept design for the Bright Skatepark upgrade.

Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) president David Clark said costs for council projects are increasing and lashed the Victorian Government for failing to keep up with adequate funding.

“Across the last five years, three quarters of local government capital programs have been funded directly by councils, either with cash

reserves, through borrowing, or asset sales, but they can’t keep doing it all alone,” he said.

“Communities need funding that responds to their local needs, not what fits on a campaign calendar in the Premier’s comms office.”

The MAV is a peak body for local government in Victoria.

According to Mr Clark, a recent MAV survey found that 95 per cent of councils reported that the cost of delivering at least one type of infrastructure had risen by more than 10 per cent in 12 months - buildings and drainage being the most affected.

Temporary raw water pipeline for Mount Beauty NORTH East Water (NE Water) will be installing and testing a temporary emergency raw water pipeline system for Mount Beauty over the coming weeks.

The pipeline is necessary as a contingency should the town’s existing raw water line fail over summer.

NE Water managing director Jo Murdoch said with the recent and ongoing wet weather, there is an increased possibility of landslips damaging this crucial infrastructure.

“We’ve already had one recent slip near the current raw water line, which luckily was not impacted”, Ms Murdoch said.

“That’s why it’s extremely important that we have a contingency in place to provide the town with water in the event of a failure, particularly in summer when demand is high.

“This temporary system will involve a diesel powered

A Victorian Government spokesperson said the government has invested more than $36 billion in regional Victoria.

“This record funding has created thousands of jobs, grown local industries and businesses, and built hundreds of projects that matter to our regional communities,” they said.

“Regional Victoria received 35 per cent of all new infrastructure investment in our 2022-23 budget.”

They said councils can contact the relevant government departments to seek clarity on funding applications.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 1619 participants from across Australia for contributing to this incredible achievement.

Every step, every minute of activity, and every dollar raised will make an enormous difference to survivors of stroke and their families.

By getting involved in Stride4Stroke, participants play the vital role of raising awareness about stroke in their

local communities, all while taking steps to reduce their own stroke risk.

Together, they clocked 903,000 moving minutes.

While our month-long Stride4Stroke campaign has wrapped up for another year, our fundraising efforts continue.

Approximately 75 per cent of Stroke Foundation’s income came from donations and bequests, mostly from survivors, their families and network of friends and supporters.

These incredible individuals understand the impact of stroke and the value of the finding the information, support and care you need to recovery.

Preventing and treating stroke should not be the sole responsibility of the family members who have already had to endure so much.

Neighbourhood centre gives a chance to share our stories

By BRODIE EVERIST MYRTLEFORD Neighbourhood Centre is partnering with ‘Kintsugi Heroes’ to tell the Alpine Shire’s personal stories of the Black Summer bushfires.

Kintsugi Heroes is an organisation that works with those who have suffered trauma or adverse circumstances to record and publish their experience, both as a process of healing and to create a permanent historical record to help others.

Working with the Myrtleford Neighbourhood Centre, they are seeking to interview people in the Alpine Shire impacted by the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires.

The recorded conversations will be edited and issued as podcasts, while transcripts of interviews will be edited and issued in a book.

“So the idea is just to get the communication going,” Kintsugi Heroes founder and chief executive officer Ian Westmoreland said.

“It’s incredibly therapeutic when people actually start to speak and know that other people are listening.”

Neighbourhood centre manager Jill Graham said they were happy to finally give locals the chance to tell their story after two years.

“The best way to overcome that trauma is to talk about it,” she said.

“It’s just a pity we’ve had to wait a long time for it.”

Footwear institution hangs up its boots

By BRODIE EVERIST AFTER 37 years in the trade Franca Vescio is selling her Myrtleford shoe business, Franca’s Footwear, so she can spend more time with her grandchildren.

“I have two beautiful granddaughters - that’s my reason for backing off and spending more time with them,” she said.

“I just want to thank everybody for supporting me - the locals and the tourists.”

Ms Vescio said she started working at the store when she left school in the late 70s, and purchased the business in 1985.

“It’s been a lovely journey working for yourself, making some lovely friends, and seeing fashions change and come back.”

She said she particularly enjoyed platform shoes

when she was younger, but wouldn’t enjoy them as much now.

Cath Riseborough, new co-owner of the store with partner Kevin, said she was excited at the prospect of taking over the business.

Franca’s Footwear is an institution,” she said.

“I’m excited and humbled to be taking over a business that has done so much for the local community.”

The pair have lived in Myrtleford for around four years, and Ms Riseborough has worked in adult education for 20 years.

“This is something new and exciting,” she said.

$10,000 Bright theft accused has “no recollection” of incident A MELBOURNE woman will fight a series of theft charges, amid allegations she stole $10,000 in cash and several pieces of jewellery from her grandmother while visiting in Bright last year.

Facing Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday, the accused, who ordinarily resides in Templestowe, said she had no recollection of the incident, after allegedly

stealing a number of envelopes containing cash while alone at her grandmother’s Bright home on August 1.

The court heard the victim and the mother of the accused left the woman at the home while attending mass in Bright, with the pair returning around 1.30pm, when the victim noticed an elastic band and pieces of jewellery on the floor in her bedroom.

After the accused and her mother returned to Templestowe the following day, the victim was said to have identified a number of envelopes containing cash were missing, as were a number of gold chains and the wedding band of the victim’s deceased husband.

Following a distressed call from the victim, the accused’s mother allegedly

searched her daughter’s room, locating $5000 in a black zip lock bag and $5000 loose on a TV cabinet, which is said to have been adorned with a scrap of paper with ‘$5000’ written in the victim’s handwriting.

The accused was interviewed by police in Thornbury on August 10, after allegedly being found in possession of $840 in cash and

several pieces of jewellery, which were later identified by the victim.

Defence counsel Nancy Battiato said her client had no criminal history and did not remember the incident, however, had admitted to attending her grandmother’s Bright home at the time of her arrest.

She said a separate criminal brief centred around

drug possession charges was also in dispute, due to the accused having a prescription to carry oxycodeine found on her person.

She was also said to have been found in possession of amphetamine and ketamine, as well as a small pocket knife resembling a swiss army knife.

The matter will return to court on February 27.

Kids, teens and adults alike are all encouraged to get a photo on the big red chair, a decoration handed over from Janis’s friend when she moved.

“Most years I just did Christmas decorations and lights inside

my house rather than any outside but when my friend moved away I decided to use some of her stuff,” she said.

“It’s my second year doing this and I just love the joy it brings.

“It was just a couple of lights and the chair last year but I could hear the kids going past outside asking to get photos and it was great to share that.

“It got quite busy with foot traffic last year and we’ve had so many already; only put it up last

THE Myrtleford ANZ bank branch is set to close in May next year.

In an email sent to customers last Thursday, the bank told customers the branch on 23 Clyde Street would permanently close on Wednesday, May 17 2023.

The email said customers can still access their branches in Wangaratta, Wodonga and Albury.

“Every day more of our customers are choosing the convenience of doing their banking when and where it suits them,” the email read.

“Through our digital channels and contact centres, you can now manage most of your banking from the comfort of your home, office or while you’re on the move.”

ANZ district manager Gurjot Thandi said 91 per cent of Myrtleford customers preferring alternative banking methods such as online and mobile banking.

“Our customers can also use the atmx on Clyde Street, and any other atmx ATMs Australia-wide at no charge as well as ATMs operated by the other major banks, fee-free,” they said.

COVID-19 cases rising in Alpine Shire ALPINE Shire recorded 50 new cases of COVID-19 in the seven days between Thursday, November 24 and December 1, with a total of 44 active cases reported last Friday, according to the State Government’s weekly COVID-19 update.

This is up from 27 cases reported over the previous seven days and only 24 active cases reported in the government’s weekly report on Friday, November 25.

According to the Victorian chief health officer, COVID-19 cases have been rising steadily since late October and the total number of COVID-19 patients in hospital has increased three-fold since October 19.

ID-19 cases reported in Victoria last week, an increase of 21.4 per cent on the previous week.

The average daily number of new cases last week was 3853, up from 3183 the previous week.

The seven-day rolling average of patients with COVID in Victorian hospitals is 550, a 27.9 per cent increase when compared to the same time the week before.

As of Friday, there were 625 COVID patients in Victorian hospitals, with 28 COVID patients in intensive care including four cleared cases.

There were eight COVID patients on a ventilator.

Mystic is good spot. Apex is a great spot for looking down at Bright. I love going to Harrietville - the bakery and the dredge hole are very good.

Anywhere out at the Buckland Valley is quite pretty. I love the rail trail, especially now it goes right to Harrietville that’s awesome for everyone.

And Nightingales - that’s a very good place to go to.

Choir carollers tour around the shire

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE THE Bright Singers choir recently kicked off the Christmas season with a performance at the recent Bright Lights Winter Nights market, and they’re not done yet.

The choir has multiple upcoming performances across the Alpine Shire, spreading Christmas carols and cheer throughout the region.

“We’re so excited to get into the Christmas spirit; as it has been with everyone else, we’ve had a difficult

year with COVID and the flu,” she said.

“We’re happy to get together and be able to put a complete concert program together; everyone has worked really hard and put in extra effort to get it done.

“It’s all about giving the community something extra to enjoy and our 15 or so members enjoy it too.

“A big shout out to our accompaniment piano and double bass, and to Brodie for his wonderful saxophone skills, which he’ll use for one of our numbers.

“After this Christmas pe-

riod the next big thing is the autumn festival concert next year.”

The Bright Singers will be performing at the Anglican Church tonight from 6pm with a light supper provided, tickets are $10 with all funds towards the church.

On Saturday the choir will head to the Mount Beauty Community Centre for a 4pm performance and on Monday, December 12 they will return to Bright to perform at the art gallery from 7pm.

Tickets will be at the door for $5.

Firefighter recruits ready for emergency response in north east Victoria

FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) 126 seasonal firefighters are ready to respond to bushfires and other emergencies across north east Victoria this summer.

Forty-nine of the firefighters are new recruits and have undergone training in recent weeks to prepare them to help protect communities and the environment from bushfires.

Seasonal firefighters complement FFMVic’s fulltime firefighting workforce and will be located at sites across the region.

This includes Mount Beauty, Bright, Ovens, Wangaratta, Beechworth, Whitfield, and Mitta Valley.

Across the state, FFMVic has re-

cruited 552 firefighters, including 28 specialist rappel firefighters.

Rappel firefighters deploy from helicopters for first attack on bushfires in remote and inaccessible forest across Victoria.

They will be located at airbases in Ovens and Heyfield.

FFMVic deputy chief fire officer Aaron Kennedy said seasonal firefighters play a critical role in effective response of bushfires on public land.

“Our recruits are trained in how to use a rake hoe to construct mineral earth control lines as well as other skills such as four-wheel driving, water pumps, and hand tool maintenance, which are essential

for forest firefighting.

“Their training also covered the essential elements of firefighting including fire behaviour, fire suppression, planned burning, emergency safety and survival techniques.

“These recruits will not only respond to bushfires and other emergencies, including floods, they’ll also be conducting planned burns, slashing, track clearing and other land management activities,” Mr Kennedy said.

“The seasonal firefighters will work alongside FFMVic’s permanent staff where they will continue with on-the-job learning from experienced firefighters.”

HALF of Australian parents are unaware young children should always be within arm’s reach around water and falsely believe that it takes more than 20 seconds to drown, according to a new poll from the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The latest Royal Children’s Hospital National Child Health Poll, ‘Water safety warning: Australian kids at risk’, shows many parents have gaps in water safety knowledge, with misconceptions around drowning risks and supervision requirements.

The key findings show that 49 per cent of parents are unaware young children should always be within arm’s reach of an adult in the water, 44 per cent are unaware drowning is often silent, and 47 per cent of children missed swimming lessons and opportunities to develop water safety skills due to the COVID pandemic.

According to the poll, parents from culturally diverse backgrounds have lower levels of knowledge about water safety.

Dr Anthea Rhodes, paediatrician and poll director, said the findings show there is a critical need to improve water safety knowledge among Australian parents.

“Our report found that while most Australian parents believe that children are never too young to start learning about water safety, there were some concerning gaps in parents’ knowledge about drowning risks,” she said.

According to Dr Rhodes, there were also misconceptions around flotation devices, with a third of parents mistakenly believing that a lilo or inflated toy will prevent a child from drowning.

The report found that four in five preschoolers have ‘no swimming skills at all’ or only ‘beginner skills’.

“We found that one in six Australian children have never had a swimming lesson,” Dr Rhodes said.

“The leading barrier was cost, followed by convenience and family logistics.

“Only half of children have accessed catch-up swimming lessons following the pandemic, leaving many children vulnerable and at risk of water related accident and injury.”

The poll surveyed 2036 parents in September 2022, who provided data on 3351 children aged between one month and 17 years.

Market weekend makes the most of the fine weather

IT was market week in Mt Beauty and Tawonga South last week with the inaugural Twilight Market ‘On the Green‘ held on Sunday on the newly named ‘Green‘ (formerly known as Pyles Paddock) in Tawonga South.

Good friends Nerida Gill and Wendy Lee had been wanting to host something On the Green so the idea of a market was formed.

More than 500 people attended making the event a huge success.

The Green is a lovely grassy area, and featured lawn games and seating, and family and friends who enjoyed the evening with good food, wine, live music and company.

With more than 20 stalls, there was plenty of variety on offer, some

of the food stalls were so busy they ran out of food.

The children had a ball with plenty of room to run around and work off some energy.

The next Twilight Market will be held on January 5, 2023 from 5pm til 9pm.

On Saturday the Mt Beauty market was held in its new location in the park, again with a large crowd.

One of the high lights was Bendigo Community Bank celebrating their 15th birthday with a free sausage sizzle on offer, and the cutting of a large birthday cake that was shared among the crowd.

The atmosphere was special, with shady trees, plenty of seating, lots of

children and dogs.

The David Vigo Youth Music Scholarship Christmas Stocking raffle added to the Christmas vibe.

A special market will be held on the evening of Friday, December 16 at Pearts Oval, same night as the Carols.

Gallery opening in Tawonga South A LARGE crowd gathered last Thursday evening for the opening of a new gallery in Tawonga South where local photographer Charlie Brown displayed his amazing photography of the high country.

Charlie said “it‘s good to have a permanent home for my work after

having pop up displays in the past. “ The gallery will be a great boost for the tourists visiting the area wanting to take home a permanent reminder of the beautiful high country.

An Evening with Beethoven Another cultural event, ‘An Evening with Beethoven‘ last Friday, was well attended in Mount Beauty to enjoy a performance from the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra Quartet.

It was another fine event delivered

by Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts.

Their annual general meeting that was due last Monday has been postponed until January 2023.

Wineries prepare for a wet summer

HE Alpine Valley boasts some of the nation’s best cooler climate wines and this season will be one closely watched by local growers, if last season is anything to go by.

Continued rain due to La Niña has vineyards at the ready to avoid vine diseases if the wet weather continues into summer.

The region has the distinction of being one of the most elevated growing areas in the country and boasts 15 wineries and 50 growers.

The area had its official ‘geographical indication’ recognised on October 7, 2000, by the late deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer when he launched the region with its own motto of ‘Altitude with Attitude’.

The attitude of growers in facing environmental threats matches that toward cooperation between them.

In contrast to the two wet seasons already endured, three major bushfires since 2003 took toll on harvests, with the grapes for those years impacted by smoke tainting.

Winery manager Bob McNamara and his wife Helen said that the lost revenue from bushfire years is a significant financial burden.

“We lost everything in that year,” Mr McNamara said.

“That was 12 months of income we don’t get, and that’s not a lot of fun.”

The McNamaras established Bush Track Wines at Whorouly South in 1987 with hand-rammed posts cut from local red box trees which Mr McNamara still replaces by hand.

The couple operates the vineyard in balance with nature to minimise chemical use, and the coincidence of the wet weather causing trees to fall and so supply fresh posts, is not lost on the couple.

“I have been able to shore up a lot of posts that have slumped due to the wet, and thankfully some trees came down for the same reason,” Mr McNamara said.

“The only trouble is that they are hard to nail into.”

Managing against diseases caused by a wet summer

requires specific pruning and trellising practices for which Mr McNamara has extensive expertise.

“The pruning and arching of vines is really dependent on the variety,” he said.

Local practice for wet summers is to open the canopy of the vines to avoid high humidity that can cause diseases.

loser to Myrtleford, Tony and Josie Ferraro were able to salvage their production costs after the 2020 bushfire by selling their crop as a juice concentrate due to smoke taint.

The couple has been growing vines on their mixed business farm where cattle, onion seed, and lucerne share their workload.

They have operated the vineyard entirely on their own and have opened a tasting cellar door in former drying kilns that Mr Ferraro’s father used when the property once grew tobacco.

Key to the winery’s success has been the Ferrro’s ability to grow seven different varieties at any one time and to follow trends in changing tastes.

Mr Ferraro said their flagship wines were Barbera and Nebbiolo, which comes from the Piedmonth region in northern Italy.

“You don’t know how long a trend is going to last, and right now Prosecco is the flavour of the month,” he said.

“They say that the trick to keeping up with trends is to plant what others are pulling out.”

The Ferraro’s expertise matches that of the area’s other wine makers.

“A wine is made in the paddock and not in the winery,” said Mrs Ferraro.

To face this summer’s impending wet weather, Mr Ferraro reiterated the importance of vine canopy management.

“You need to know how to make different structures for different circumstances,” he said.

“It is also important to know how much fruit to take off when thinning the crop; you try to not to over crop in case you have a wet year.

“Last season a lot of our varieties did not crop right.

“A massive bunch will be

out of balance between the leaf and fruit, so you don’t want real big bunches.”

However, the lynchpin to the region’s success is Jo Marsh, a medal-winning graduate of Adelaide’s famous Roseworthy Agricultural College School of Oenology, who moved to the area in 2012 to become winemaker at Feathertop Wineries.

Ms Marsh is considered a key player who has helped put the region on the map and for whom high praise comes from growers.

“Jo is a great winemaker,” Mr Ferraro said.

“She makes wines that you’ve never heard of.

“If something sounds interesting, she’ll grab it and make it.”

“Jo has come a long way, too, so she is improving the area’s reputation,” Mrs Ferraro said.

The McNamara’s are equal in their appreciation of Ms Marsh starting up her own winery that has brought the local industry together, with support from growers such as the McNamaras.

Ms Marsh established

Myrtleford’s Billy Button Wines in 2014 and supports local growers by making unique wines from their grapes and yet is very modest about her achievements.

“The secret is to foster a mutually beneficial relationship with growers,” Ms Marsh said.

“We allow people to do what they do best - let the vineyards stick to growing grapes, and we will focus on making the wine,” she said.

Despite China’s high tariffs on Australian wine, Ms Marsh said the Alpine Valley region is largely protected from such an impact due to extensive local sales and the large variety of wines on offer.

“There is a lot of demand in the local market, so we are buffered more than other regions in regard to China’s action,” she said.

Ms Marsh said the diversity in wines is largely attributed to the local range of soil types and microclimates.

“I always recognise the grapes being used on my labels,” she said.

“The variety of wines made here helps the region become more widely known.”

Tour of Bright returns

By BRODIE EVERIST AFTER three years, cyclists returned en masse to the Alpine region for the Tour of Bright last weekend, with the local Alpine Cycling Club (ACC) making a strong showing.

According to ACC communications officer Laura Gray, nearly 400 riders registered and raced over the weekend.

“We were very happy with it all, we had amazing

weather,” Ms Gray said.

She said the warm conditions were a marked difference from the last Tour of Bright in 2019 when snow fell over the weekend.

“Racers had to contend with some sunny, very warm weather, but it all ran successfully and safely,” she said.

Ms Gray thanked the tour’s many volunteers, sponsors and the events team, including race director Aaron Smith.

According to Ms Gray, the two-day event was split into three stages.

The first stage, called the Gaps Loop, was a loop from Bright to Ovens, across to the Kiewa Valley Highway via the Happy Valley Road, and south to Tawonga before heading finishing on the Tawonga Gap Road.

The second stage was a time-trail to Martins Bridge in Wandiligong and back again.

The third stage was a race from Bright to the

top of Mount Buffalo.

Notable placings from the Alpine Cycling Club included Christophe Baudry, who came second in the Masters A Men general and climb classifications; Julian Baudry, who came fourth in the Men’s B general classification and second in the climb classification; and Fiona Morris, who came fifth in the Women’s B general classification and fourth in the climb classification.

THE Alpine Allied Health Hub team are beyond thrilled to announce they are settled into their new, bigger and brighter building at 72 Myrtle Street.

The building, which has stood for more than 30-years, has been home to many businesses during its time; with townsfolk recalling a second hand furniture store, various cafes and eateries, and more recently an op-shop.

The new look Alpine Allied Health Hub offers five consulting rooms and a large open plan gym - and has certainly been met with much excitement from the many clients who have visited since it’s opening earlier last month.

The Hub is home to a range of allied health providers including mental health social worker Kelly Riley from Riley Counselling and Consulting, podiatrist Cassandra McKenzie from The Foot Centre, exercise physiologist Greta Donaldson from Alpine Active, child psychologist Bernadette Benson from Kaleidoscope Psychological Services and the ever growing physiotherapy team from Flexout Health, which now includes seven therapists Rebecca, Jacinta, Grace, Beau, Rachel, Kiera and Jeff.

Flexout Health’s Rebecca Piazza said the team were focused on improving access

to the highest quality allied health services to Myrtleford and surrounding community.

“We are lucky to have such an incredible team of practitioners from such a diverse and experienced background,” she said.

“The team really prides themselves on helping people of all ages to achieve optimal health and wellness; I think they are doing an amazing job in doing just that”.

Since the Alpine Allied Health Hub originally opened in 2017, Rebecca said the concept had been met with phenomenal support from the community.

“We have been blown away with the level of interest in all of the services, and the genuine gratitude shown when residents no longer need to travel out of town for services,” she said.

“Many of the allied health businesses have grown since coming together, offering a greater breadth of services and additional hours of operation.

“These providers are supported by mixed funding models which has no doubt taken some pressure of the publicly funded services which are traditionally flawed by long wait times.

ONE of the major advantages of the move to the new premises for the Alpine Allied Health Hub has been the larger, brighter, shared gymnasium space.

Now home to a range of classes including the GLA:D Hip and Knee Program, Qi Flow, Diabetes specific programs and the very popular Spinal Fitness Classes,

the new gym has been a hit with clients and staff alike.

Rebecca Piazza said the expansion “allowed us to introduce a number of new group classes which has probably been one of the highlights of the move”.

This included the recently introduced Life! Program; a free lifestyle modification program which involves four fortnightly

sessions focusing on health eating, exercise and wellbeing.

Rebecca also said the continued success of the GLA:D Hip and Knee Program had the capacity to reach more people with the new space and additional class availability.

The GLA:D Hip and Knee Program is a new ‘best practice’ treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis.

The program was developed by researchers in Denmark and provides a tailored education and exercise program that reflects the latest research evidence.

Flexout Health is accredited in this revolutionary new program and is excited to offer it to clients.

Early next year the Flexout Health team will also introduce the full subsidised Beat It

program, which is an eight week fitness program that involves moderate intensity aerobic, strength and balance based exercises as well as education sessions on healthy living.

Haines calls for regional roads inquiry submissions

WATER WORRIES: An inquiry into roads following severe weather events will be carried out to unearth ways to lessen the impact of severe weather events.

THE condition of regional and rural roads following severe weather events will be the subject of an inquiry by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Regional Development, Infrastructure and Transport.

Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines, who is a member of the committee, encouraged constituents in Indi to make submissions to the inquiry.

“The state of the roads in Indi and across regional and rural Australia following the recent floods has taken things from bad to worse,” Dr Haines said.

“I have already called on the

Federal Government to increase funding to local councils to respond to the problems they are facing, and this inquiry goes further - taking a long-term look at how we can build better roads as the climate changes and the number of severe weather events increases.”

Dr Haines said she hoped local councils and people across Indi would take this opportunity to influence policy and funding decisions on regional and rural roads.

“We can’t just keep patching and filling holes, without looking at structural issues,” she said.

“I want to make sure our roads

are safe, and our local economies are supported by useable roads.

“I’m looking forward to what we learn through this inquiry and putting that into action.”

The terms of reference for the Inquiry into the Implications of Severe Weather Events on the National Regional, Rural and Remote Road Network are: • road engineering and construction standards required to enhance the resiliency of future road construction; • identification of climate resilient corridors suitable for future road construction projects; • opportunities to enhance

road resilience through the use of waterproof products in road construction; • the Commonwealth’s role in road resilience planning; and • any related issues.

The committee is seeking written submissions, ideally of no more than 10 pages, from organisations and individuals providing recommendations relating to any or all of the inquiry terms of reference by February 28, 2023.

THE Myrtleford Neighbourhood Centre is assuring locals that food relief is available over the Christmas and New Year period.

People can call 5752 2775 to order a hamper of food and other goods that can be picked up from the Neighbourhood Centre on Myrtle Street.

Neighbourhood Centre manager Jill Graham said they have options for people who can pay and those who can’t.

“Leave a message or we’ll

answer, and we’ll come in and set up a food hamper for them and they can come pick it up.”

Ms Graham said hamper orders should be placed by Tuesday morning in time for their weekly delivery on Thursday.

Hampers contain nonperishables, toiletries, pet food, and the neighbourhood house also add fruit, vegetables and meat.

“We want people to know that we’re here for them,” said Ms Graham.

Funding concerns for Ovens Murray leadership program

By BRODIE EVERIST THE Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs (VRCLP) is calling for a $10 million funding commitment over 10 years from the Victorian Government to ensure the longevity of their Annual Leadership Program.

According to Alpine Valleys Community Leadership chair Judy Charlton, the Annual Leadership Program in the Ovens Murray region helps participants to build their leadership capacity and delivers community projects.

“If the funding does not come through it’s going to mean that the annual program, which is the fully immersive one to really grow leadership capacity in all

communities, is definitely at risk,” she said.

“We might be able to run it next year without government funding by drawing on our reserves, but the reserves will run out and we couldn’t continue running that in the future.”

Ms Charlton said a funding commitment for Victoria of $10 million over four years would provide certainty to continue to deliver high-quality community leadership programs.

According to Ms Charlton, this would foster social change in alignment with regional priorities, increase the diversity of program participants, retain skilled staff, and increase alumni engagement.

Projects delivered by 2022 Annual Leadership

Program participants include small films to highlight community food projects within the Northeast and Border region, and a campaign raising awareness of the limited ability of businesses to provide food and drink services on the Great Valley cycle trail, with an aim to enhance the visitor experience.

“These are examples from the hundreds of initiatives delivered by VRCLP participants and alumni across Victoria annually,” Ms Charlton said.

“This capability and commitment to building community resilience will be lost without secure funding.”

The Victorian Government was contacted for comment but did not respond before deadline.

Students make 100km trek for charity

A GROUP of 50 Marian College students ran the Marian 100 last Friday, the school’s annual relay from Mount Hotham to Myrtleford raising funds for Camp Quality.

The relay was made up of a series of five-kilometre legs, with a small group of students running each leg while others travelled along the route in a bus.

For the final leg all students met at the former Myrtleford butter factory and ran as a group to Marian College, with a police escort guiding them along Myrtle Street and Clyde Street.

After running across Memorial Park the students were welcomed by a group of cheering parents, teachers and St Mary’s Primary School students.

National Anti-Corruption Commission is legislated THE National AntiCorruption Commission has been legislated by the Federal Parliament, and will be established in the new year.

Indi independent federal MP Helen Haines marked the occasion in parliament on Wednesday as a significant victory for integrity and transparency in politics.

“This day has been a long time coming. It is a moment of national significance, and this legislation is a huge step in restoring trust and integrity to politics,” Dr Haines said “This victory is for the people of Indi who have voted for action on corruption.

“This is for every person who has stopped me on the street and said: ‘don’t give up on integrity, Helen’.”

Dr Haines paid tribute to the former Indi MP Cathy McGowan, and other advocates who have worked hard over many years for an integrity watchdog.

She also congratulated Attorney General Mark Dreyfus and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for their work in making the National Anti-Corruption Commission a priority.

“I also congratulate all the members of the Attorney General’s Department who have worked on this legislation, which will serve the Australian

Summer series has arrived

THE return of the Myrtleford Summer Series was a great success on the weekend with a 100 strong crowd enjoying live tunes and good weather.

Organiser Joe Davis said it was a great turnout for the first event of the 2022/23 program.

“That number is our standard now so we’re expecting it to grow and slowly build,” he said.

“December is a busy month so we don’t expect heaps but we love seeing people come out and enjoy the music.”

This Friday the folk duo from Mount Beauty, No F Chords, will headline,

following performances from Joe and the With One Voice choir.

The event will be held in the Myrtleford Piazza from 6-8.30pm.

Summer Series will continue every Friday in December and every Saturday in January at the same time and location.

Landcare finish the year with hard graft MYRTLEFORD and District Landcare and Sustainability Inc finished the 2022 year with a weed control working bee along the Ovens River Walking Track on Saturday, December 3, followed by a Christmas celebration in Apex Park.

According to secretary Glenda Janas, It has been a busy year for the Landcare group, with monthly working bees focusing on the areas along Happy Valley Creek, the Ovens River Walking Track and Reform Hill.

Much of their work has involved weed control and replanting with native grasses, shrubs and trees.

Ms Janas said 980 trees were planted on Reform

Hill on National Tree Planting Day in July.

The group has also continued planting the endangered Stony Bush Pea on Reform Hill, with a further 240 shrubs planted during the middle of this year.

Along with working bees, the group has been involved in facilitating a number of community workshops, including the Repair Cafe, Indian Myna awareness, Birding your Backyard, domestic pet environmental issues and sharing biodiversity information at the Myrtleford Farmer’s Market and the Myrtleford Show.

“The Myrtleford landcare members are passionate about improving and sustaining the natural Alpine

environment that we are so privileged to be surrounded by,” Ms Janas said.

“We encourage others in the community to come and join us.

“We love seeing the young and the not so young at our working bees - everyone is welcome.”

Local winery staying positive despite weather

DESPITE the less than ideal weather hitting the Alpine Valley in recent weeks, Gapsted Wines remain in a “strong position” ahead of the next harvest.

Chief executive officer Andrew Santarossa said plenty of hard work by a lot of people has helped.

“It’s been a difficult growing season but we’ve had positive collaboration with not only our estate vineyards, but growers as well,” he said.

“For the most part we’ve been able to communicate clearly to each other what we can and can’t do and which areas we need to improve on.

“At this stage we’re looking at a slightly lower crop than originally expected but are still in a strong position.

“There’s been good interaction in using resources we have in the industry but we do need some weather conditions to turn in a favourable light to we get through to harvest.”

Mr Santarossa said more wet weather will effect both the quality and quantity of the grapes.

“Normally in a roller coaster year, like this one has started out to be, reds are more affected by whites in quality and quantity so that is where we need to see extended periods of fine weather to make sure we’ll get through to harvest with good levels of quantity.”

Senior Veterinary Officer Dianne Phillips said livestock owners need to remain alert – ingestion of blue–green algae can result in the poisoning of livestock.

“As there is no specific treatment for blue–green

algae poisoning, producers should check standing bodies of water and farm water supplies daily for blooms, as this remains the most effective way of preventing stock deaths,” Dr Phillips said.

“Blue–green algal blooms typically appear as surface scum that looks like a suspension of green paint, often with an earthy smell. However, the colour may range from pale green to dark brown.”

Deaths can occur when

stock drink toxins produced by the blue–green algae, often when it is concentrated on the down–wind side of a water supply and has formed a dense, surface scum.

Animals that have consumed blue–green algal toxin may appear ill very rapidly, develop a staggering gait, collapse, begin to convulse and die – typically within 24 hours – depending on the toxicity of the bloom and the concentration of the toxin.

Those that don‘t die immediately, often suffer from severe liver damage.

Livestock that recover from these ailments often suffer from chronic ill–thrift.

If a suspicious bloom is noticed, the water supply should be isolated as quickly as possible, and a safe alternate water supply provided.

“Where possible producers should identify an alternative water supply, prior to their primary source of livestock

drinking water being affected by a bloom,” Dr Phillips said.

“There may not be time to identify an alternative water source once the primary water supply is affected.

“We recommend laboratory testing of the water supply for the presence of blue–green algae and a post– mortem or examination of dead or sick animals by a veterinarian.”

By RYAN MALCOLM WANGARATTA-based state MP Tania Maxwell is not expected to return to her seat on Victoria’s Legislative Council, after largely conceding defeat in an online video to supporters.

Ms Maxwell posted a live video to Facebook the day after the election, expressing her desire to continue her advocacy work in the aftermath of the state election, after being left on the outer of a hotly contested race for Northern Victoria’s five seats.

The formal announcement of the new Legislative Council is expected on December 13.

The Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (DHJP) MP expressed her disappointment in the party

last week, following a controversial preference deal reached

by DHJP leader Derryn Hinch which saw the party’s preference votes redirected to the Animal Justice Party (AJP).

Mr Hinch later slammed the AJP, who renegged on reciprocating their preferences to DHJP. AJP candidate Georgie Purcell was as of yesterday primed to claim Northern Victoria’s fifth and final seat.

“Just wanted to let you all know I didn’t get through, I didn’t make it for re-election,” Ms Maxwell told her supporters on Sunday.

“As disappointing and as devastating as that was and is, I got up this morning, had breakfast and I’m out in the garden doing

the things I love - that’s my panacea.

“While it is a sad day, I’ve chosen not to sit around and be glum, as I thought I might be.

“I don’t know what lies around the corner but I’m sure I’ll be on to different things - I still see a role with my advocacy because that is my passion.”

Ms Maxwell said she had a deep appreciation for the swell of community support in recent years.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has supported me over the past four years,” she said.

“I can never express how grateful I am to those who have stood beside me, helped me, voted for me and have sent in-

credible messages that have just made this all just a little bit easier.

“It’s going to take me a while to realise that I’m not going (back) to parliament - but who know what’s around the corner and who knows what will happen.

“I’m just going to take each day as it comes and be out in my garden, working hard, trying to lose some of those 20-odd kilos I think I put on in parliament, and just doing what matters to me for a little while before taking on another journey to continue to help all of you in some way shape or form.”

Wodonga-based Liberal Democrats representative Tim Quilty also appears on-track to miss reelection.

JEEP GLADIATOR RUBICON

Ŷ LIMITED APPEAL FOR MANY: Gladiator . . . goes off but gets unexpectedly bogged.

JEEP’S Gladiator was inevitable, as sure as four doors follow two.

Launched here in 2020, it’s a tough-looking, dual cab, fiveseat utility with storied off-road credentials.

Gladiator is a competitor for Toyota’s Hilux Rogue, Ford Ranger Raptor and other range-toppers, and comes with a sizeable price tag to match.

Although tradies have an affinity for flashy 4x4 dual cab utes, oddly you don’t see many driving a Gladiator.

In fact, you don’t see many of them full stop.

Maybe they are more interested in the look than taking their shiny new toys off road - perhaps Gladiator is a little hard core for the wife and family?

STYLING It’s an eye-catching thing, with a hint of monster truck, riding high with fender flares and chunky off-road rubber.

Wrangler’s removable roof panels are retained, along with a windscreen that folds flat and removable lightweight aluminium doors.

Two versions of Gladiator are offered: the city focused Night Eagle, priced from $73,450 and bush-bashing Rubicon priced from $82,250 -- both before on-roads.

Our test vehicle was the hardcore Rubicon with all the bells and whistles.

So far this year Jeep has sold 1200 Gladiators.

This compares with 54,000 Hiluxes and 38,000 Rangers (we don’t have separate figures for specific grades).

The big difference between Gladiator and other utes is that

it is a purpose-built off-roader unlike competitors that start life as commercial vehicles.

Gladiator is available only with a 3.6-litre petrol V6 that is sure to guzzle gas.

The diesel has been gradually phased out, no doubt in preparation for a hybrid or perhaps fully electric replacement.

Gladiator comes with a 5-year/100,000km warranty, lifetime roadside assistance if you service the vehicle through Jeep and needs to be serviced every 12 months/12,000km.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 generates 209kW of power at 6400 rpm and 347Nm of torque at 4100 rpm, with drive to the rear wheels most of the time through an eight-speed automatic transmission fitted with auto engine stop-start.

SAFETY Standard safety extends to four airbags (two front and two side), with Autonomous emergency braking (City and Interurban) and a blind spot monitor.

Forward Collision Warning Plus, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Path Detection.

Be aware, however, Gladiator receives only three out of a possible five stars for crash performance.

DRIVING Australia’s Outback is regarded as the pinnacle of offroad adventure.

It’s a market still dominated

by Toyota in its many shapes and forms as we discovered

on a recent trip to the Top End behind the wheel of a Prado wagon.

Jeeps and Land Rovers are a comparatively rare sight on the corrugated dirt Gibb River Road which stretches more than 600km between Broome and Kununurra in Western Australia.

Conspicuously absent is the darling of the western suburbs, the Ford Ranger.

Where does Gladiator fit into this scenario?

It’s very much a lifestyle choice, with the focus on play rather than work.

It’s about going bush for the weekend, with your mates and your dirt bikes, with plenty of room in the back for the rest of the gear.

When we started driving Jeeps, they had two doors and a cramped, emergency rear seat.

Then the four-door Unlimited came along and opened up a whole new world.

Since then, the market for 4x4 dual cab ute market has taken off, accounting for three of the top 10 selling vehicles in Australia.

Jeep obviously wants a piece of that action and in June, 2020 the Gladiator (what a great name) was added to the mix, based on the four-door model with a proper ladder chassis.

At 5591mm in length, Gladiator is long, 71cm longer than the four-door and almost 1.3 metres longer than the original two-door Wrangler.

Parked side by side with a Hilux it looks about the same length, but it’s actually 27cm longer, which could make the difference between getting in the garage -- or not.

It’s also 21cm longer than the Raptor - but still 24cm short of a so-called ‘full-size truck’ such as the RAM 1500.

That length can pose problems when it comes to parking and manoeuvring, with a 13.6 metre turning circle that will see you making plenty of three-point turns.

Convex exterior mirrors make judging distance to objects difficult.

It can carry a 693kg and it can tow a 2721kg braked load.

The back seats can be folded to reveal additional lockable storage underneath and the whole lot can be hosed out if it comes to that, with removable carpet and drain plugs.

With an 83-litre tank, fuel consumption is rated at 12.4L/100km, giving it a theoretical range of 670km.

It’s a feisty thing, fun to drive with a decent turn of speed, but we would have preferred a diesel.

The steering is rubbery and it has a tendency to wander if left unchecked, but the ride is surprisingly compliant and unlikely to generate complaints.

After just over 300km of mixed driving, some off road, we were getting 14.0L/100km which is a little steep for our likes.

tomatically adjusts throttle, Selec-Speed Control, Traction Control, Transmission Shift Mode.

It has two modes: 4HI for higher speed sand performance and 4LO for very low speed rock-hopping manoeuvres Despite all this, we managed to get the Rubicon bogged in the first mud hole we encountered on a track that we have traversed many times.

Maybe it was just bad luck, but it left the ute stranded, with all four wheels spinning uselessly, water up to the top of the rims.

Forward or reverse progress was impossible and we were forced to get on the blower for help.

Two tow ropes and a winch later the Jeep was finally mobile again, but at the cost of a bruised ego and a couple of cartons of beer.

SUMMING UP Price doesn’t seem to be an object these days, because you won’t get much change out of $90K by the time you put this Gladiator on the road.

But the lack of diesel or some other more fuel-efficient

means of propulsion is likely to be a stumbling block in a 4x4 ute market that is dominated by diesels.

As for the Gladiator’s offroad performance. Well, it is what it is . . .

Basketball sides thrive at Shep’ THE Myrtleford and District Basketball Association sent two under 12 boys’ teams, as well as an under 14, under 16 and under 18 boys’ side to compete in the Greater Shepparton Tournament over the weekend.

All five squads had a great weekend with under 18s winning all but the last game of the tournament, and the under 14s won all games but missed out on a final by percentage.

The under 12 Div 1 team made it to the grand final, winning all five of their games and finishing top of their pool.

The grand final was a nailbiter with the game going into three minutes of overtime where they unfortunately went down by four points to Wodonga - the side played exceptionally well and coach Michelle Barker was very proud of their efforts.

Myrtleford host Seymour in the men’s and women’s CBL match this Sunday - the women take to the court at 12pm while the men play from 2pm.

Men’s coach Tyler Barker said the match will be a massive challenge for the Saints.

“The upcoming game against Seymour will be a tough game for us as they are currently the team to beat in the division,” he said.

“Hopefully, we can close to a full team and have a real

shot at knocking them off their winning season.

“This week will be really focused on defence, trying to implement that as best as we can on the weekend, as that’s were our offence starts from.”

Massive week for Mount Beauty Golf Club THE ladies of the Mount Beauty Golf Club played their nine hole par three course on Saturday, November 26 which was won

by Lynda Barter (27) with 15 points followed by Carol Bartholomew (36) on 13 points.

On Wednesday, November 30, with a much drier course, the ladies went out for the first full nine hole stableford comp in a while.

The winner was Lynda Barter (27) with 17 points while competition newcomer Helen Whittaker (35) almost got there with her 16 points as did Liz Harvey (24) with her 16 points.

NTP on the ninth hole was Liz Harvey.

It has been great to see the club’s three new lady members gain a golf handicap recently.

They have all been introduced to golf at our Sunday Ladies’ Social Golf afternoons.

Comments by the ladies revolved around ‘at last the course is dry enough to

make a game of golf enjoyable’.

Saturday also saw 19 men line up for the first day of their season with a Monthly Medal match on the agenda.

The CAZNA Cup field, made up with only eight of the last season’s Monthly Medal Winners, were seeded in the first two groups.

This year 12 individual winners were eligible to play for the coveted trophy: Ben Peacock (Dec 2021), Sam Bellchambers (Jan

2022), Stuie Jelbart (Feb), Michael Bartholomew (Mar), Dave Etherton (April), Dave Whelan (May), Dave Browning (June), Tony Campen (July), Ross Rynehart (August), Taf Sullivan (Sept), Peter Hertzog (Oct) and Ron Gallagher (Nov).

The course was in great condition but the going was slow as the rough had been mowed for the first time in a long while and any stray balls were proving difficult to locate.

All players made it back with Macca Deans being the successful winner of the Monthly Medal with a 73 net, Ross Rynehart and Roger Church were close on his heels sharing 74 net each with Allan Retallick hot on their heels with a 75 net.

As for the CAZNA Cup, Ross’s 74 was enough to secure him the trophy, while Ron Gallagher was the next best with his 79 net.

Ovens and Murray release action packed fixture THE Ovens and Murray Football Netball League has released a bumper 2023 fixture.

The 2023 season will commence on Saturday, April 1 with Lavington set to host Wodonga in the season opener.

Myrtleford’s season will get underway on Sunday, April 9, with a home game against Lavington at McNamara Reserve.

“The fixture is the most contentious and challenging task for

the O&M Board,” O&M chairperson David Sinclair said.

“Balancing club requests and meeting fixture guidelines is never an easy task when there are many moving parts.

“The most fundamental change in 2023 will see the O&M grand final move back to its traditional slot the weekend prior to the AFL grand final.

“On balance, we feel this fixture provides opportunities for all 10

clubs, and we are really excited about the commencement of the 2023 season.”

Other key features of the fixture include: • Rd 1- Corowa-Rutherglen, Myrtleford and Yarrawonga all to host matches across Easter.

• Rd 2 - Wangaratta v Wodonga under lights at Norm Minns Oval.

Lions’ leadership bolstered

WHOROULY is shaping up to be one of the biggest improvers of the Ovens and King league, with the Lions bringing in an experienced assistant coach to mentor the young side as well as luring solid talent to the Lions’ Den. Sam Burdon, a battle-hardened campaigner with strong ties to Wahgunyah in the TDFL and CDHBU (Coreen Daysdale Hopefield Bujara United) in the Hume league, has signed on as a playing assistant coach and will bring years of wisdom to help out second-year coach Riley Calvene.

The Lions finished a tough 2022 season with a flourish, grabbing four back-to-back wins from the final four rounds, a feat which caught Burdon’s eye.

“Riley was working over at McPhail’s with me for a while, I met Riley there and we hit it off,” Burdon said.

“I started taking a bit of interest in the footy club, and one thing led to another.

“I started getting some itchy feet this year, I guess, I’ve had a spell for a few years, I was a bit cooked from coaching.

“The way Riley sold it to me was they’re a young team, won the last four games which I took note of, and I feel the club is building something special.

“They’re all about building that stability and sustainability which, with the club and the players they’ve recruited, is quite evident.

“It’s a good young group here, I’m pretty excited to build off Riley’s hard work last year and the club’s hard work.”

“Being a young coach myself, I lacked having that mentor and someone to lean on, and didn’t really have a good support system around me, and that’s something that I want to give to Riley,” he said.

“Looking back, in hindsight and reflection, if I had that I think I probably still would’ve gone through with it (coaching) but because I didn’t have that I walked away and I don’t want that to hap-

pen to another young fella.

“He’s got a lot of ability in his coaching and has impressed me pretty well so far.”

Calvene said the majority of the Lions’ senior list was eager for another year in the maroon, alongside a raft of new players to the Lions’ Den. “(Burdon’s) a good get, it’s good having an experienced head around me - we’ve got a young group, so I think having as much experience and good people around them to help them get better and develop is pretty big for us,” he said.

“We’ve locked in Sam Piazza and Cody Poulton from Myrtleford, and Dylan Gephart from Tarrawingee.

“There are still plenty more guys we’re talking to and hopefully in the next few weeks we can announce more signings, but it’s looking good so far.

“We’ve retained pretty much our whole list so we’re looking pretty strong at the moment.”

The Lions will continue their preseason efforts twice a week at Whorouly Recreation Reserve until they break for Christmas before resuming in the New Year.

A res Tigers hurting after rough match

BY MARTIN DAVIS THE story of Ovens Valley’s 2022/23 cricket season has been one of rain and constant changes with B grade unfortunately having to forfeit due to numbers, the Tigers’ A reserve side were hoping for a win over Rutherglen, but the combined A reserve/B grade side came up short.

On a warm day at Barkly Park, the theme from skipper Robert Barry was ‘United’, and the game was well underway when in the eighth over Ovens Valley opening bowler Sam Piazza got dragged by the umpire for bowling too many dangerous full tosses.

With the umpire’s decision meaning Piazza wasn’t able to bowl for the rest of the game, this allowed Barry to make a change bringing on Marcello Vescio who in the 12th over picked up the wicket of Kurt Schmidt for 18.

What came next was not what the Tigers were expecting, with Rutherglen’s Dean Simmons and Liam Hocking coming together with a 75-run partnership before the start of the 30th over when Barry broke through.

The final six overs were crucial for the Tigers but Rutherglen came out swinging going 4/65 in the dying stages to finish with 5/193.

Ovens Valley’s batting didn’t start the way they wanted with Nathan Cooke given out LBW in the third over.

Partnerships were few and far between both Barry and Tyler Thomason batting before Barry was out caught behind 13 short of a half-century in the 24th over after a good display team cricket.

After the fall of the side’s third wicket Ovens Valley wasn’t able to have anyone to stay around with Thomason, with the side going 3/60 in the remaining 22.3 overs before eventually going down by 45 runs after a ten-run, 11-ball final over.

Barry said the game would’ve been more in the balance if his side restricted the number of extras (17) conceded during their bowling.

Tigers’ Canadian import ready for more Aussie cricket

By NATHAN DE VRIES OVENS Valley United introduced their newest import player to the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association last Saturday, with Canadian cricketer Harkaran Mann looking at home in the Tigers’ A grade squad.

The Ontario Cricket Academy player touched down in mid-November, and was immediately whisked into the nets, assisting the Tigers’ juniors and preparing for his A grade debut against Benalla at the Gardens Oval.

While the result may not have gone Ovens Valley’s way, with the Bushrangers taking the win by one wicket, Mann made a solid start to his season, the all-rounder hitting 15 from 24 deliveries and taking 2/15 with the ball.

Mann said the conditions were unlike any he’s experienced in his international cricket career to date.

“This is my first time in Australia, I’ve played in New Zealand, so I’ve been around this side of the world before, but just not in Australia,” he said.

“I was just trying to get a season in Australia just because it’s winter time in Canada right now so there’s not much cricket besides playing indoors.

“It was just nice to come out here, hopefully I can get a few lovely games in.

“What we get in Canada are pretty slow wickets, mainly turning wickets, you might get really good wickets as well but mainly the wickets in Canada are on the slower side.

“From what I’ve heard and seen, the wickets in Australia have a lot more pace and bounce.

“Hopefully I can get a nice season

in like that, and just expose myself to newer conditions.”

While Canada may not spring to mind as one of the premier cricketing nations, Mann said the sport had a foothold in the Great White North, and was growing rapidly.

“Cricket is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada at the moment,” he said.

“It’s surprising, people think there’s not much cricket in Canada but once you’re in that cricket community you start to realise there’s actually a lot of cricket and it’s not bad cricket at all, it’s really good, competitive cricket.

“I think that’s a real surprise for people that hear about cricket in Canada.”

In addition to his role in the first XI, Mann will also help the Ovens Valley United juniors, passing on knowledge he’s gained from his coaches and years of cricketing experience.

“I’m quite young but I’ve played a fair bit of cricket - I just want to share the knowledge I got from my coaches and hopefully they can pick and choose the stuff they like and work from there,” he said.

“I’ve actually started working with the under 12 kids on Mondays and Wednesdays, I’m working with them on their batting.

“We had a net based on batting where I worked with the kids one-onone, they’d get five or 10 minutes in with me.

“We just worked on some stuff, help them improve on some techniques - hopefully I can better their game and give them some advice which can hopefully lead to some good stuff in the future.”

Ready, set, mow! Lawn mower racing is coming to Myrtleford

By NATHAN DE VRIES START your engines and get ready for action, because on Saturday, December 10, the Myrtleford Speedway Club will come alive with the roars of lawnmower racing for the first time.

The Australian Ride-On Lawn Mower Racing Association (AROLMRA) will take up residence at the local speedway with races beginning at 11am, with heats and finals featuring multiple classes of racing mowers.

Myrtleford Speedway Club president Glen Walch said he was looking forward to bringing the event to the area.

“It’s the first time they’ve actually raced at Myrtleford, so it’ll be interesting to see,” he said.

“From what we’ve heard, it should be pretty popular I think there will be a decent enough amount of spectators that will come down for a look.

“What happened was, me and one of the guys on the committee were down at the track one day four or five months ago, we were trying to get some grass mowed but surprise surprise, it just kept raining on us.

“I did a Facebook post, saying we’re down here trying our best but the rain’s beaten us, and Scott (With-

erow, a Myrtleford local) actually pulled in the gate - we thought he was there to buy raffle tickets off us for the wood raffle or something and offered his help.

“He said if we ever need help to let him know, he said he doesn’t mind coming down and doing a bit of slashing.

“It lead from there, it turns out he raced these mowers and one thing led to another and he’s come to us with this proposal.”

Saturday’s event will be the first of many at the speedway, with AROLMRA planning to host their Victorian State Titles in May. Walch said the idea of a

permanent track for lawn mower racing appealed to the organisers.

“All the tracks they race on aren’t permanent tracks - they have races at the Ettamogah Pub and places like that where they’ll turn up in the morning and basically set a track up using hay bales and bunting and the natural landmarks and at the end of the day they’ll pack it all up again,” he said.

“The actual premier class, they’ve got 450cc dirt bike engines in them, out of the fastest 450cc dirt bikes.

“I’ve never actually seen them, myself, but they’ll be quite fast and quite spectacular to watch.

“They have all sorts of classes, they have kids and I think they have a girls’ class as well, but there are different engine sizes.

“They’re going to run 16 heats and four finals on the day, the racing itself is starting at about 11am.

“They’re actually using the full dirt track, the same circuit the dirt bikes use, the actual senior speedway track.

“It should be pretty good fun to watch.”

“We were very happy with 211, they bowled well early and they got our best two batters out in Josh Newton and ‘Harky’ relatively cheaply, so for the middle order to stick it out, get to 211, we were very happy with that.”

With a sizable total to bowl to, the Tigers went with a spin-heavy attack, with Seamus Phillips, Nick Bleeser and Josh Newton sending down tight deliveries.

Delatite couldn’t seem to build strong partnerships, with Patrick Smith standing tall with a hardearned 27.

The Tigers blazed away with the ball, giving up 38 runs in extras, but Bursill said the result was still a positive one for the side.

“Because we had a good total on the board we stuck with a couple of younger fellas, give them a bit more exposure which is great,” he said.

“We changed the bowling order up a bit - Seamus Phillips, who bowls left-arm offies, opened the bowling and did really well.

“We had Nick Bleeser and Josh Newton who also bowled spin so it was a really spin-heavy attack, and they all bowled really well together - I think Josh and Nick bowled their eight over spells straight out as well in tandem, they were right over the batter with lots of plays and misses and edges.

“There weren’t many chances but they bowled really well.”

The Tigers face City Colts this Saturday at McNamara Reserve.

OVENS Valley United’s A grade squad picked up their maiden win of the 2022/23 season on the turf at Whorouly, where their 6/211 total was too great for an under-strength Delatite to overcome, who were bowled out for 120.

The Tigers won the toss and elected to bat, with openers Dylan Bursill and Harkaran Mann managing 33 runs before Mann was sent packing by Lachlan Scales for 15.

After Josh Newton fell cheaply, Bursill and Cooper Thomason came together in an 83 run partnership to dig the Tigers out of a bit of strife.

IT was a nail-biting match for Mount Beauty in their Cricket Albury Wodonga district first grade clash with Dederang, with the Power going down by five wickets.

Mount Beauty was bowled out for 190, with Dederang making 5/192 in reply.

The Power won the toss and elected to bat first, and after captain Daniel Saville was dismissed for nine, Gregor McLennan took control and smashed 81 runs from 62 deliveries before he was bowled by Ryan Barker.

Adam Whelan’s 34 run innings helped steer the Power along, but a collapse through the middle order saw Mount Beauty slip from 3/113 to 6/142.

Chris Derrick (20 from 30) kept the innings alive but after he was undone by some brilliant fielding by Jayden Dailey, Mount Beauty was bowled out for 190.

Barker was deadly for Dederang, ending with 3/24 from his eight overs assisted by Andrew Mann’s 2/18 off six.

With a decent total to bowl to, Mount Beauty had difficulty unseating opening pair Barker and Mark Nichol putting on 77 runs before Paddy Dodd got the breakthrough, with wicketkeeper Frank Iaria stumping Barker for 37 runs.

Lyndon Mitchell struck next, with two wickets falling in quick succession to have Dederang 3/108.

Dodd clean bowled Tristan Mann (21) and Andrew Mann (3) to end with figures of 3/28 from 6.1 overs.

The Power tried to limit the runs but the damage was done, Dederang taking the win by five wickets.

Daniel Saville said his side lacked consistency from round to round, but was hoping for a strong performance over Eskdale this weekend at the Eskdale Recreation Reserve.

“It’s always a good game against Dederang - the last few games have been pretty close and there was no exception this time around,” he said.

“We were batting well until just after drinks, then fell away dramatically from there.

“There were three players with scores in double figures, it’s not good enough for a team that wants to be contending for finals.

“We didn’t take many early wickets but it didn’t bother us because we knew we had the run rate under control.

“It probably came back to bite us after they were able to play with a bit more freedom after drinks.”

Volunteering is great for your health and happiness

ACCORDING to Victorian government figures, approximately 2.3 million (or 42.1 per cent) of Victorians over 15 years of age volunteer formally with organisations or informally in their communities.

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is the region’s largest employer and know the value of volunteers across their wards, in community palliative care, as meals on wheels drivers and at the Illoura Residential Aged Care facility, and how much their patients and volunteers get out of the opportunity.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet some volunteers and speak to them about what volunteering means to them, and I joined Kerryn Mitchell, volunteer manager at NHW on a Meals on Wheels run.

I got to see firsthand the appreciation these older people have for the volunteers and the

important service they provide.

“We have eight runs per day, five days a week,” Kerryn said.

“There are up to 12 deliveries on each run so that’s almost 100 elderly members of the community who rely on hot, fresh meals from our hospital kitchen each day.”

Rob Falla has been a Meals on Wheels volunteer with NHW for around four years.

“Volunteering gives me an involvement in the community and in the care of the elderly, I get the opportunity to meet people I really enjoy spending time with and form wonderful friendships; there is a great opportunity to have a long term relationship with someone because you might be delivering their meal every day for two years so you get to know what’s happening in their life and they will be very interested in what’s happening in your life.

“When someone is ready to go home, I help them pack and take them down to the transit lounge and it’s nice for patients to have someone with them when they’re going home - some of them are quite lonely so it’s nice that I can be there for them to talk to”.

Rosie Camillo-Tennent takes an art as therapy group each week at Illoura Residential Care and said that volunteering is a twoway process.

“It keeps me active, keeps me thinking and gives me a chance to be integrated into the community, as an immigrant to Australia it’s really nice to be able to give back to say thank you for making me welcome,” she said.

“I really do get as much out of volunteering as the residents get from my being there.”

Palliative Care volunteer Linda Hughes said that giving back to the community is an important reason why she volunteers.

MEAL DELIVERY: Rob Falla is one of Northeast Health Wangaratta’s volunteers who gets as much out of his work contribution as the people he visits do.

“Being able to help and support people during a really difficult time in their lives is a special thing,” she said.

“We spend time with people in their homes, offering support and practical assistance to the family and, if we want to,

we can visit them in the hospital at end of life.”

Demographically, people aged 40-54 years old are the most prevalent as volunteers (with 30.5 per cent), followed by people aged 70 years and over (at 28 per cent).

Volunteering rates were

similar between males (23 per cent) and females (26 per cent).

Protect your family from mosquitoes this summer MOSQUITOES are not just annoying, they can also carry and transmit diseases including Dengue fever, Australian and Japanese Encephalitis and Ross River fever.

Prevention is the order of the day with so much water still lying around so follow this simple checklist to stop mosquitoes breeding on your property and from getting inside your home.

• Maintain fly screens to keep mosquitoes out - ensure you have fly screens on windows, doors, vents and chimneys.

• Use insect sprays and repellents - many of these can be used inside and outside.

Hearing the holiday spirit AS we get closer to the traditional Christmas break, it is helpful to remember that this is the time of year when hopefully everyone in our community can be included in the celebrations, family gatherings and the fun.

What are the ‘things’ we should do to ensure that inclusion is possible?

Firstly, for those of our community who have a hearing loss and use hearing aids, it is important to make sure the aids are working well.

The devices can only help when they are worn.

If the aids are not functioning as well as you would like, organising a service during the next couple of weeks is important.

See your hearing aid provider about this - you may not even need an appointment.

If you have hearing aids which currently ‘live in the drawer’ (and we do know some), please remember to wear them consistently for the next few weeks.

This will gradually improve how you hear during the social times.

Wearing your aids all day long, every day, is the best way to help your brain get a consistent message and train yourself to hear better in those challenging situations involving background noise.

holidays and take spare batteries (or your recharging unit) if going away from home for a time.

Give yourself the gift of good health this Christmas

WITH Christmas Day fast approaching, it seems like it’s a deadline that everything has to get done by, and this can initiate some stress in us, while waiting at the supermarket queues, or trying to find a car parking space to do that ‘one extra job on our list’.

Take some time to relax, to do some deep breathing, maybe some yoga or go for a walk/run; all these things will help you cope if you’re feeling stressed at all.

Often during this time of year we sometimes eat and drink to excess.

So the best advice is if you do this on Christmas Day, you don’t need to keep up that pace on Boxing Day or all the way to NYE - best to go back to the diet that your body feels best on - here are some more tips to make this a really fun and healthy season.

Remember the 80/15/5 Rule - 80 per cent of the time follow the best diet that your body feels amazing on, 15 per cent of the time if you enjoy some of those treats your aunty made at Christmas it won’t make too much difference, and 5 per cent of the time if you really love Christmas pudding - enjoy it and savour it but there’s no need to keep eating it for days on end.

- go for a walk, play cricket, tap dance or some other fun activity to help digestion; • Herbal teas such as peppermint and liquorice taken after a meal will aid digestion; • Know when it’s over - we can easily get carried away and keep the festive food habits going throughout summer - plan ahead and choose a day to get back to sensible eating.

Christmas can be a fun time, but it is also a very stressful time for many who have recently lost a loved one, are lonely, going through a separation or many other events.

Empathy and gratitude, to yourself and others, are very important things at this time of year - a smile, a card, special gift or delivery of some food can go such a long way to help ease people’s pain and feel more included.

It’s almost time to run for fun and your health again REGISTRATION is now open for the 2023 Wangaratta Chronicle Marathon and Fun Run which will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2023.

The Wangaratta Chronicle is pleased to confirm their partnership with Garry Nash and Co as the event’s major sponsor and look forward to planning the event together following the successful 2022 event in March.

There will be five events taking place - marathon, half marathon, 10km run/walk, 5km run/walk and the 2km primary school challenge.

The 2km Primary School Challenge and the Community Teams Challenge will once again offer generous cash prizes and trophies.
