This follows our decision at the end of last year’s ski season to partner with Steve Cuff in Jindabyne to launch Snowy Mountains Magazine. As sister publications they will have a similar look.

Snowy Mountains Magazine is well on the way to becoming the major spowsports publication covering the Snowy Mountains resorts and we have plans to grow it as a key reference for locals and visitors for all season activities across the Snowy Monaro region.

Alpine News will now primarily focus on Victorian news and events which is how it started out 34 years ago. It will continue

to feature the Resorts Guide and prices, competition updates, race calendar, ski fashion and equipment updates, Alpine Property Guide and much more.

Britt Cox’s impressively ‘bumpy’ ride to the top of the world

By Vanessa Bacon-Hall THE ‘bumps’, which is the affectionate name for moguls are making a road paved of gold for Britteny ‘Britt’ Cox with a career best season which saw her take out the World Cup earlier this year in the female moguls. The pleasant Britt took time out en route to training in Vancouver to talk to the Australian Alpine News community (AAN).

AAN: You’ve had a career best northern season so far, coming away as the World #1, was there one particular race that stood out from the rest?

BC: Thanks. This was actually the first season where I have done the whole world cup tour from start to finish and by far it was the longest season I have ever done.

Having said that, being on top of the podium at the World Cup in Calgary with my teammate Matt Graham (who won the Men’s competition that day) was a really special moment. Matt and I train together all year and we push each other to become better skiers and I have seen the hard work Matt puts in, so it was really cool for us to take the top spot together on the same day.

AAN: For the uninitiated, how do you describe moguls?

BC: Mogul skiing is a judged sport that combines turns, speed and airs. A mogul course is usually 250m in length and around 28-30 degrees in pitch. The three sections of moguls are divided by two jumps with the middle section being the longest. Turns make up 60 per cent of the score. Judges are looking for active absorption, knee angulation, a stable upper body and the most direct line possible. Deductions will be made for leg splits and line changes etc.

The other 20 per cent of the score relates

to the jumps and much like diving, more difficult tricks can receive higher scores.

When it comes to tricks, judges are looking for amplitude, form and axis. The final 20 per cent of the score is determined by speed.

AAN: What’s the lead up to next year’s Olympics going to be like for you?

BC: This will be a big year of training.

We have just wrapped up our first strength and conditioning block and now head into a number of water ramp and on snow training camps both overseas and in Australia. I am also looking forward to the Nationals In Perisher and the ABOM Mogul Challenge at Mt Buller. The World Cup circuit kicks off in December and it will be back-to-back competition each week from then until the games.

AAN: Good luck Britt, you definitely have the entire Alpine News community barracking for you and we will definitely all be watching when you compete for what will probably be a podium finish at PyeongChang. Any special thanks that you would like to make in advance?

BC: Every little bit of support from the Alpine community has helped me achieve my goals this past season. My teammates and I are grateful for the support of the Olympic Winter Institute in our preparations this Olympic year ahead and for me personally I am always thankful for my parents, Karen and Graeme, who have always encouraged me to chase my dreams and I’m so happy that they share my joy in the sport.

AAN: Finally, what would you say to any of the younger Australian skiers and snowboarders who dare dream of becoming the best in the world at an Alpine sport?

BC: Desire and hard work are your foundations. If you have the desire, the hard work will still be hard, but it will be doable and you will be able to enjoy the reward knowing that you earned it.

Aussie dominator

By Adam Begg AUSTRALIAN Snowboarder Scotty James has just completed one of the most successful seasons of any competitive pro snowboarder in history. This northern winter season he has absolutely dominated the elite level halfpipe events across the globe, leaving the world’s best in his wake.

James has been on the podium in nearly every event he has entered this season, his competition runs are impressive to watch and are proving unbeatable. He has it all.

His amplitude is as big as anyone in the competitions and his repertoire of tricks are technical, his style flawless.

Many critics are saying he has the best back double cork 1260 in the pipe world.

This manoeuvre alone has been one of the major factors for his impressive winning streak. The past two Winter Olympic champions both performed this trick.

Results speak for themselves and this season James’ list of achievements and results are impressive to say the least. At the Olympic test event in Korea he won in what could be a precursor to February 2018 at PyeongChang. He won the World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain becoming the first rider in history to grab consecutive World Championships.

While he did slip up slightly at the US Open, only placing second, he certainly had us on the edge of our seats.

Finally he won gold at Winter X Games in Aspen, backing up last year’s bronze at the same event. X Games are recognised by riders as the pinnacle event in snowboarding, and with back to back podiums all eyes are squarely on James as one of the emerging stars of our sport. Or has he already arrived this season.

Snowboarding has two tours, the FIS tour who host World Cup events, World Championships and the Olympicss every oard four years, and the World Snowboard Federation where most of the top riders compete outside of Olympic years. s. James rently is in the top position in both, currently leading the World Snowboard tourr points econd list. He has also just secured his second crystal globe for winning the overall rall FIS tour for the 2016/2017 season.

What does this mean? If you are talking about the best men to drop into a halfpipe James will be on that list. He has beaten the last two Olympic Gold medallists numerous times and has Shaun White, regarded rded as the best in history re-thinking his strategy ading into and upping his training regime leading Korea.

James has just jointly won best Australian athlete of the year and at present has some serious momentum leading into the he Winter Olympic year in 2018. He is the perfect erfect istent, representative for Australia, consistent, always smiling, a nice guy and at the moment always on the podium.

WINTER DRIVING If you have had a traction problem when driving up to, or more importantly down from, your lodge or apartment at your resort or have had a driving safety issue on mountain roads it will be because of the type of tyres are fitted to your vehicle. Due to their width, rubber compound and tread pattern, high performance summer tyres provide unacceptable grip for low temperature snow driving. High performance, high speed rated tyres and cold winter alpine temperatures, snow and icy roads are NOT compatible because this type of tyre was never designed by the tyre maker to be driven in low ambient temperatures or in snow and icy conditions.

It is also important to note that the recent advancements in electronic driver aids, such as ABS, ESC and traction control do not provide more traction. These electronic aids only prevent drivers from over braking or overpowering the available traction of their tyres.

The only thing the driver can do to increase traction, to actually get more grip and safer control, is to install winter/snow tyres. The safety issues that occur during extreme weather conditions, are compounded not only on the road conditions but also by the effect of the cold weather on vehicle tyres. The tread compound of high performance summer tyres that are fitted, becomes like "hard plastic" at below 7° thereby losing the flexibility needed to build up sufficient grip for braking, for starting traction and for cornering. The real key to winter tyre performance is, ironically, not the traction to accelerate, even though grip to drive through deep snow may be the first thing we think about with snow tyres. Instead, the real key is braking performance. The ability to stop is actually more important than the ability to go, and it is under these “exit event” conditions that winter/snow tyres excel.

Here is one way to determine how much tyre grip is available for your vehicle when driving in challenging conditions on your snow trip........ When it is safe to do so, at a safe speed, and, make sure that no one is close behind you, apply the brakes firmly until the wheels

lock up and the ABS is activated. Keep the brake pedal pressed down until the vehicle stops completely. This will give you a clear indication of the grip available at that particular point in time. You can repeat this test to continually monitor grip in different conditions.

SNOW CHAINS There can be issues when diamond pattern snow chains are used on very wide high performance 2WD or AWD "summer" tyres. On summer tyres snow chains will grip to the snow/ice surface of the road but the tyre can slip or spin within the chain even when they are correctly fitted to the tyre. The problem is compounded by the camber of the road, the weight and torque of the vehicle and the amount of tread on the tyre. The problem is worse when the vehicle has been parked at the resort because of the low ambient temperature makes the tyres harder and therefore has even less grip to the chain.

This will help you understand why 'spider chains' and ladder chains have now been banned for use at Mount Hotham Snow chains fitted to summer tyres on the front wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but can not assist with lateral stability.

Because of the inadequate grip on the rear tyres the vehicle will oversteer and under braking the ABS system will be activated, further increasing the stopping distance.

More snow at Hotham for winter 2017 MOUNT Hotham Skiing Company has invested $4.4 million to expand snowmaking coverage and the final stage of this project provides coverage of Hotham’s signature beginner terrain and will be complete for season 2017.

The snowmaking expansion covers more trails on Heavenly Valley, as well as the great intermediate terrain serviced by the Roadrunner lift and beginner terrain in the Summit area.

This significant investment will increase the area covered by snowmaking from 25 hectares to 33 hectares, with 100 Techno-Alpin fan guns across the resort One of the exciting new lesson packages for 2017 is ‘Max 7’.

With Max 7 lessons, guests

will receive more personalised tuition and quicker progression with a maximum group size of only seven guests. Along with smaller groups the lessons will now be longer, with 2.5hrs on snow.

In 2017 all rental purchases of four days or greater will now include rest days, as do lift tickets. If a four of six day lift ticket is purchased, a four of six day rental need only be purchased.

Four day lift passes, lessons and rentals offer a rest day and this is in addition to the existing five, six and seven day flexible passes and programs.

Midweek Magic is now available every week for winter 2017 with three days of midweek snow fun from Tuesday to Thursday available for the price of a two day lift pass.

Lake Mountain: encouraging kids to get into snow sports LAKE Mountain Alpine Resort’s Burton Riglet Park is back again this year bigger than ever and will provide kids aged three to six years with the opportunity to try out snowboarding in a safe and encouraging environment.

With one-on-one tutoring from experienced snow sports instructors, these mini shredders will find success in no time.

Lessons run for half an hour and include equipment hire (boots, snowboard and helmet) and prices are just $25 per child.

Lake Mountain is also known for their cross-country (XC) skiing and the Fischer Nordic Fun Park is designed for kids aged four to 12 years old to try XC skiing and the introductory lessons in the park are all about getting a pair of skis on and having fun on the snow.

The friendly team of ski instructors demonstrate the basics of cross-country skiing and then get everyone involved in fun ways to improve their skills. Half hour lessons run throughout the day and include ski equipment hire (boots and skis) and are just $25 per child.

Snow play at Dinner Plain

DINNER Plain Alpine Village which sits at 1580 metres above sea level, is the highest permanently inhabited freehold village in Australia and because Dinner Plain is a freehold village, resort entry fees are not required to visit the village/ski area.

For the first time ever, Dinner Plain will offer winter visitors the opportunity to go ice skating in the snow with a pop-up ice skating rink operating in the village centre during the July school holidays.

Ice skates and penguins (to help young children learn to skate), will be available at the rink.

Located at the Dinner Plain Snowgum tennis courts from Saturday, July 8 to Sunday, July 16 from 12pm – 8pm.

Another new addition for 2017 is ‘Alpine Laser Skirmish’. This new activity by Great Alpine Adventures (founders of Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours) will see participants out and rolling in the

snow and playing laser skirmish in the snow. Three people per team are required to play.

Along with FREE entry to the village, Dinner Plain also have free tubing at the tube slide which is valid with all lift passes and tobogganing at the Pea Shooter toboggan run is free for all to use, just BYO toboggan or rent one from one of the ski hire shops.

With a gentle slope and easy-touse poma lift, the beginners ski slope on Scrubbers End at Dinner Plain is one of the easiest and most affordable places to learn to ski.

Lift passes are available from the base of the slope at the Alpine Life ski shop in Dinner Plain or online from Hotham Sports.

Again in 2017 night skiing will be available with the Cobungra Platter ski slope lit up every Wednesday and Saturday night during peak season. Lift tickets will only be $10 between 6pm and 9pm.

New at Falls Creek in 2017 FALLS Creek has seen a large amount of private investment at the resort over the summer months including major renovations at iconic properties Astra Lodge and Elk at Falls.

Disabled Wintersports Australia, in partnership with the YMCA has built a purpose built facility at Howmans Gap over the summer months.

The state-of-the-art centre has 36 beds, which will ensure that participants of all abilities can get out and challenge themselves on Victoria’s ski fields.

The development which will open in July was made possible thanks to a $3.1 million Andrews Labor Government investment and the special lodgings will be Australia’s first fully accessible alpine accommodation.

Falls Creek are making private ski and snowboard lessons available to book online, which will allow for a seamless booking process for guests who take up these lessons.

Green power back at Mt Stirling HYDROELECTRIC power is returning to Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) after a tenyear absence. Burnt out in the 2006-7 Alpine Park wild fire, the resort has had to rely on a diesel-powered generator for its electricity requirements.

Thanks to a government environmental grant and hard work from the Resort Management Board, a new hydro electricity plant, complete with battery back-up, is nearing completion for a pre winter start-up and will see the entire electrical requirements of the resort fuelled by the new hydro plant.

Mt Stirling also has some extremely affordable family deals on offer this winter.

Saturday for Kids – ages 6 to 14, every Saturday $60, 10am start and will include a full day of ski hire, ski instruction, supervised games and tobogganing.

Snowsports Hall of Fame Inductees

By Steve Cuff THREE snow industry identities were inducted into the Snowsports Industries of Australia (SIA) hall of fame at the annual snow trade show in Canberra last October.

Peter Zirknitzer from Zirky’s fame at Hotham, Bert Leibetseder, a long time wholesaler who introduced Carrera to Australia, and Geoff Sawyer, who is regarded as the founder of snowboarding in Australia, were present for their awards.

They join Vivienne Green, Hans Grimus and Larry Adler who were inducted in 2015.

Peter Zirknitzer, or simply Zirky as he is referred to, was a 30 year old instructor when he arrived at Hotham from Austria in 1963. In those early days at Hotham, Zirky immediately became involved with the Alpine Ski Club where he started instructing the die-hard skiers and boosting instructor ranks to two.

He was honoured to accept the award but said, “I think it’s wonderful, I just don’t quite know whether I deserved it or not, or if I did enough for it.”

The resort installed a poma lift to the Summit in 1965, snow ploughs were introduced in 1966/67 which opened the road and club lodges started opening in the 70s and 80s.

He started building Zirky’s in the 70s, starting as a snack bar and ski hire and visited banks to borrow money where they

all thought he was mad. He did receive a $2000 loan and he was able to start building.

He continued to build in between returning to Austria to teach skiing, make money and return to expand his hotel.

“It just grew and grew, and then they built the apartments in 1999-2000, so there’s about 200 beds there now, so it is a reasonable size place, it’s good.”

Peter met Heather McTyre in one of his ski classes where they fell in love and married in 1971. They have three children who all grew up at Hotham and who were at the awards ceremony.

Today daughter Anneleis runs Zirky’s, a thriving après bar and restaurant with 30 self-contained apartments, ski in ski out access, a boutique shop and ski hire. Peter and Heather still ski regularly at Hotham during local winters and overseas.

Zirky said, “I love skiing, it is the only thing I can do reasonably well, I may as well do it.”

You will still find Zirky on the premises during winter where he said “I make sure they drink enough.”

Bert Leibetseder arrived in Australia and started ski instructing at Perisher in 1973.

In 1978 he started to develop the Carrera business in Australia, marketing their sports eyewear and in particular Carrera goggles. Bert was given one year to prove to Carrera that he would make it a success which he certainly did and more.

In 1982 he married wife Rosemary who worked alongside Bert in the successful business.

He was a keen racer and in 1986 founded the Australian Masters Alpine Tour Company and the Australian Masters Alpine Ski Championships. From 1986- 1987 he was director of Ski Industries Association of Australia (SIA), and vice president from 1987-1990.

Bert was instrumental in the design of the Carrera Ultrasight ski goggle lens concept, which was voted best new product at the Australian Ski Awards in 1989. The goggle is being exhibited at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum’s database of Australian inventions and is featured in the book Tomorrow’s World – The Australian Initiative.

His business grew from 1978 until 2006 by adding more brands and equipment including Head skis, Tyrolia bindings, Toko waxes and Wintersteiger tuning machines.

As an avid ski racer, Bert would compete in various masters ski races both in Australia and overseas, where he accumulated many medals. Bert was also a forerunner at the Thredbo World Cup races in 1989.

After a brief retirement, Bert returned to the snow industry where he helps people improve their skiing through his Skimetric program. Apart from helping people ski better and assist race individuals and teams,

Bert builds special ski boots for people who have had accidents, helping them to ski again.

“It’s a very big honour and a surprise I must say, because you never think about these things,” said Bert.

“And it feels really good after spending literally a lifetime working in the scene, projects and doing well in the ski business to get this kind of recognition, I feel really, really good about that.”

Geoff Sawyer spent a few years overseas in the early 1980s and returned to Australia in 1985 armed with a few Burton and Sims snowboards.

“I was living at Aspen Highlands at the time, I met some of the Burton team riders and went and met Jake (Burton), and said I want to import boards,” said Geoff.

It was a difficult beginning to be accepted and Perisher management at the time were not quite sure about this new concept of snowboarding, so Sawyer ended up at Thredbo where in rode the 1985 season.

Trying to promote this new sport, Sawyer arrived at the 1985 SIA trade show in Canberra with a box of flyers. Not being allowed into the show, Geoff parked his panel van in the carpark and proceeded to show people his snowboards from the van.

The following summer he produced a film, ‘Beyond the Snowy River’, filmed in the backcountry including skiing, snowboarding and telemark skiing.

“I looked at it in retrospect and went well yeah, I set up all the associations, all the teachings, setup the first importing and I set up the whole racing,” said Geoff.

“In among all those areas I had to do a lot of negotiations with mountains and basically set up everything for the sport to happen.

“At the end of the day I just did what I did, the sport itself is what became popular, I just sort of gave it a structure to be able to work in, and I was happy to do it. Maybe I should have concentrated more on business and I might have still been here 20 or 30 years later.”

With guidance from the Ski School Geoff started private teaching at Thredbo in 1986. This same year he started the NSW Snowboard Association as chairman.

Victoria then created their own association, the Snowboard Federation of Australia where Geoff presided as chairman.

In 1987 snowboard teaching was an official part of the Thredbo Ski School, exams were conducted at Falls Creek and in 1987 Geoff distributed snowboards.

He started his own shop in Jindabyne in 1991 called the Snowboard Hospital which operated until 1994 when Geoff then stepped away from the industry.

Those early years when Geoff introduced snowboarding were pivotal in developing the sport to the level and popularity of where snowboarding is today in Australia.

“I went to that 30 year reunion (Thredbo 2016), and it’s been ten years since I have been to Thredbo, and my god the amount of people snowboarding on that hill that day enjoying themselves, it was great to see.”

Snow making the key to endless deep powder for years to come

By Vanessa Bacon-Hall ON A brisk autumn day in late March, one which would on any given winter day be classed as ‘bluebird’, skiers and boarders lined up on Mt Buller’s Bourke Street and rode a long white run of freshly made snow in temperatures which were hovering in the teens.

The aptly named ‘snow factory’ was pumping out the white gold and gave those in its midst a glimpse of what is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new snow making technology.

Resembling that of a sea container and from arguably the leaders in snow making technology, ‘TechnoAlpin’ the steel framed and aptly named “snow factory” can rightly lay claim to being able to produce glorious snow in temperatures well above zero and where previous optimal ‘dew points’ need not be factored into the snow making equation.

General manager of Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) Laurie Blampied welcomed the arrival of the $1.6m investment to the ski area and stated that the snow factory will re-write the script for the start of winter.

“Instead of wondering when the snow will arrive we can assure our guests of early season skiing and snowboarding from the beginning of the season,” Mr Blampied said.

Mt Buller already has an impressive amount of snow making infrastructure and the new snow factory will further ensure that there is snow on the ground with the technical ‘specs’ on the snow factory stating that it can continuously produce snow 24 hours a day, seven days a week at temperatures well above freezing. All that equates to up to 220 cubic metres of snow daily at up to 15 degrees Celsius.

While infrastructure such as the snow factory will pave the way for guaranteed snow for the duration of the official winter season in Australia, similar snow making capabilities are ensuring that European resorts are remaining open for longer and allowing them to have the guaranteed competitive edge against those that are primarily relying on traditional snow from good old Mother Nature.

One such resort to lead the way in this field is Val d’Isere.

Situated in the French Alps, Val d’Isere boasts the largest snowmaking facility in Europe and is capable of pumping out an impressive 2,500 square metres of snow per hour.

To put that into a sizeable visual, that equates to covering a soccer field in a metre of snow in less than one hour.

Recent advancements in snow making technology will allow for both Northern and Southern hemisphere resorts to have viable winters of deep, white, fluffy pow! past also features ‘Le Snow Factory’ which is based in a giant hangar to the side of the Olympique Gondola.

The factory came on board in the nick of time last December in what was to become a season which recorded one of the lowest natural snowfall depths in recent years.

Le Snow Factory got to work pumping out sufficient snow to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in 30 minutes and the whole Bellevarde Mountain that towers above the factory in less than a week.

The formidable infrastructure was developed almost entirely in Val d’Isere and will see the benefits of such innovation being reaped the world over for many, many years to come.

Along with the impressive Snow Factory new innovations in snowmaking are

constantly being made and existing technologies improved on.

At the recent leading trade fair for Alpine Technologies which was held in Innsbruck, Switzerland, efficiency of snow making capabilities was one of the main exhibiting qualities on display.

A good example of this is the “Tridusa” innovation from the 2SNOW Group. This innovation triples the snow production of each snowmaking point, as director of the group Claus Dangel explains, “The extreme performance of the triple-head lance (snowgun) is at its maximum limit and makes the snowmaking system even more powerful.” The group claim that the Tridusa system can produce up to 40 cubic metres per hour.

Alpin, from South Tyrol were also on display and are promising a real revolution in snowmaking with their new TR8 fan gun.

Techno Alpin claim to set as yet unrivalled technological standards with head engineer Florian Schwalt reporting; “There are three main goals every time a new snowmaker is developed which include maximum snowing performance, maximum energy efficiency and the lowest possible noise and the TR8 drive technology delivers on all three.”

Back to that ‘bluebird’ day in March at Mt Buller when turns were being made on freshly made snow, BSL general manager Laurie Blampied was one of the first to make some ski turns down the 100 metre slope and stated, “It’s skiing really well and feels just like a spring snow day.”

It’s fair to say that the future is looking good for the ski resorts the world over and it is advancements in snow making infrastructure that is going to ensure that the white flakes are pumped out, even in balmy Victorian temperatures.

Aussie skiers top of the world

By Steve Cuff AUSTRALIAN skiers have celebrated one of their best ever northern winter seasons, with mogul skier Britt Cox leading the charge with a World Championship gold medal in Sierra Nevada, Spain, plus taking out the Crystal Globe overall World Cup champion.

Aerial skiers also graced the World Championship podium, with David Morris collecting a bronze medal and Danielle Scott a silver medal.

Until this year, Cox had not won a mogul World Cup event, but she returned to Australia with a swag of medals having won seven gold and two bronze. She did not finish outside the top ten all season and capped it off by jointly winning Australian snowsports athlete of the year.

Cox, who is one of the most likable athletes has dedicated herself to the sport since debuting on the big stage at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. From a baby faced 15 year old she has grown into now the best female mogul skier in the world.

“All season this was the event in the back of my mind, this was the event that I really wanted to be successful at,” Cox said of the World Championship.

“To be successful here and ski the way I did, I couldn’t be happier.”

Cox qualified in first position and never took her foot off the pedal, powering home with a score of 83.63 to outclass Perrine Laffont from France (82.51), with reigning Olympic

and World Champion Justine DufourLapointe (80.74) of Canada in third position.

“A lot of people have been asking me what clicked this season and I don’t think anything necessarily clicked, it was more a matter of all the training I have done over a number of years finally paying off for me,” Cox said.

World Championship debutants, Jakara Anthony placed 12th and Madi Himbury finished 20th in the women’s event. Anthony finished 22nd overall in the World Cup standings and Himbury 26th.

Fellow mogul skiers Nicole Parks finished the season ranked 30th, her best finish an 8th in Deer Valley before a knee injury ended her season early. Krystle Yin finished ranked 28 and Claudia Gueli 24.

The men’s mogul squad performed well on the World Cup circuit, with Matt Graham winning in January to celebrate a double header for Australia in Calgary, Canada, with Britt Cox. Graham’s season looked to be on the rise with four podiums overall, and while ranked 3rd in the world he would have been wanting more at the World Championships. He finished a disappointing 14th, while fellow teammates Brodie Summers placed 11th and Rohan ChapmanDavies 15th.

Summers had his best ever performance in China, reaching the podium with a silver medal. He has improved this season, was 8th in the World Cup standings and is on the rise for next year.

Aerials The aerial team has continued their ongoing success, which dates back well over a decade. With Morris and Scott starring at the World Championships, Winter Olympic Gold medallist Lydia Lassila made a successful comeback on the World Cup circuit. Lassila captured three gold medals and finished the season ranked third overall, just behind Danielle Scott.

Australian women have four of the top 12 placings, with Scott securing two World Cup silver medals, Laura Peel with one podium bronze in Russia and 6th in the standings and Samantha Wells ranked 12th.

Morris’ bronze at the World Championships came as a surprise, as his form was down this season and is ranked 18th overall.

Ski Cross and Slopestyle Sami Kennedy-Sim has finished her best ever World Cup season for results, with a podium finish 2nd place in Idre Fjall, Sweden, and consistently in the top ten. She finished the season standings at 12th.

Anton Grimus had a season he would rather forget, missing most of the events due to injury.

Slopestyle skier Russell Henshaw has had his fair share of injuries in past seasons, so he was delighted with a World Cup podium finish in Italy, finishing 3rd. He has been consistent in qualifications but has not been able to finish it off in the finals but still retains 8th overall on the standings.

Snowboard world cup wrap

By Adam Begg THIS northern winter has been one of the most successful World Cup seasons ever for Australian snowboarders. The depth of our boardercross program is amazing and leading into the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, our team has a number of athletes looking to secure podium positions.

Boardercross Belle Brockhoff was dominating the women’s tour this season starting with victory in the Montafon season opener, another first place in Bulgaria and a string of top ten results. She held the yellow bib as overall leader before a knee injury cut her season short.

Alex Pullin didn’t have the best start to the season by his standards, with a series of 4th places before rallying two late victories to be currently sitting in fourth position on the World Cup standings. He carried this form into the World Championships, where the two time champion finished with a bronze medal.

Jarryd Hughes had a solid season despite missing an event and is ranked 7th overall. His best result was a silver medal behind teammate Alex Pullin for a history making top two Australian

podium in Germany. Hughes will know he needs to improve before the Winter Olympics.

Cam Bolton is currently sitting 20th on the overall standings, his best finish 11th in La Molina, Spain.

Adam Lambert competed in his first world cup events in Germany and Spain where he made the small finals both times, sky rocketing his ranking to 22nd. To show this was no fluke, Lambert qualified for the six man World Championship final and placed 6th, a great result and will be one to watch.

Halfpipe Scotty James has made the finals of every event he has entered this season and has had a stellar season. He has had a taste of Winter Olympic fever before in Sochi, so expect him to be a real contender in 2018. See story on page 5.

Kent Kallister finished the season ranked 13th with a strong 8th place at the Winter Olympic test, and an 11th at the World Championships.

Nate Johnston has been busy balancing family life with competition commitments this season and is currently ranked 25th, his best finish 11th at Mammoth.

Our women’s halfpipe team is looking

strong with Winter Olympic veteran Holly Crawford 22nd overall on the tour and young gun Emily Arthur completing a great debut World Cup season ranked 19th overall.

Torah Bright has taken the season off competing, stating she will focus all of her attention on halfpipe for Korea.

After winning Gold at Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Silver at Sochi 2014, look for her to shoot up the rankings next season.

Big Air will be making its debut at PyeongChang and the way it is looking team selection will come from the pool of slopestyle athletes selected to compete. Presently we have Jess Rich chasing both the slopestyle and big air world tours to try and qualify. Young Tess Coady has shot up the rankings finishing 6th overall on the women’s slopestyle and could be a surprise packet next year.

Matthew Cox is trying to qualify for the men for both slopestyle and big air.

He won the Jossi Wells Invitational big air in New Zealand last season and has been scoring World Cup points.

Keep an eye on all these athletes in the next year as we look to send what will most certainly be our biggest and most competitive Winter Olympic team to date.

Bumps Ski & Surf celebrates 35 years BUMPS Ski & Surf was established in March 1982 and over the past thirty-five years has proved to be a stayer in the ski industry.

Peter and Glenda Haley opened the doors on Bumps Ski and Sport (now called Bumps Ski and Surf), at 465 Glenhuntly Rd Elsternwick on March 15 1982.

Their goal was to develop and maintain a growing ski and sport retail business by providing the highest possible level of customer service in the industry, which undoubtedly has been achieved.

Their motto, “the right product for the right reason, no exceptions” still rings true, with their highly trained staff always advising what is best for the individual.

Bumps were pioneers within the ski industry and introduced many ideas that have been adopted across the board such as the Boot Fit Guarantee and extended winter trading hours (to allow for easier ski rental).

The store have also introduced many new ideas such as the Annual Kids’ Recycle Sale and the Annual Race Exhibition – both of which are widely attended. This year Bumps celebrates the 21st anniversary of the Kids Recycle sale.

Bumps have a policy of being at the forefront of innovation and providing their loyal customers with such technology. Bumps was one of the first to introduce the exclusive Wintersteiger factory finish ski and snowboard tuning service to metropolitan Melbourne and the first in the world to take delivery of the Montana Infrared Race Waxer machine.

In an era where many shop online, there are certain things that cannot be bought that way and that includes a quality fit and expertise. Bumps have all of the above and are the only Snowsports store in Melbourne still run by the original owners.

◆ CHANGE OF GOVERNANCE: The proposed change in the management of all Victorian Alpine Resorts was one of the main subjects to be addressed at the Mt Hotham stakeholders briefing.

Mount Hotham stakeholders briefing at the MCG MOUNT Hotham held their annual stakeholder briefing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday, March 21.

The briefing was an opportunity for stakeholders to be up-to-date with the operations and management of the resort and have the chance to raise their ideas and issues.

Mount Hotham stakeholders travelled from all over the state to attend the briefing, which covered topics regarding the Governance Reform, Mount Hotham branding, Growing Mt Hotham project and an overview of works undertaken by Mount Hotham Skiing Company.

Guest speaker and president of Victorian Snowsports Association (VSA) Rob Anderson talked about VSA’s view on the Governance Reform.

He said following the meeting that if a new reformed management system is to work then everything has to fit together.

“The Alpine Resorts Working Group and Victorian Snowports Association have put in a submission to the government review with a strong message to include a community

representative on whatever new board is decided on.

“Economic viability is of great importance and there are a number of things that should be considered and have been suggested, but we don’t expect to get any of them,” he said.

Mr Anderson said of the proposals being put forward, forming a northern management board for the Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buller/Mt Stirling and a southern board for Baw Baw and Lake Mountain would be the better of the two options.

Although community consultation workshops have been held Mr Anderson said stakeholders at the resorts were not confident of suggestions being taken note of.

“I think the government will probably go with the two boards,” he said.

Mr Anderson noted again that the ski industry is worth some $790 million and employs 7900 people during the season.

“This is a serious industry and will not exist if we don’t get the viability side right,” he said.

Mr Anderson said the board has noted all questions and issues raised during the

briefing and is working towards stronger communications and engagement with its stakeholders.

A great response was achieved over the days following the briefing with further concerns and ideas raised through stakeholder email.

Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Boards chief executive officer Jon Hutchins said that the resort had an opportunity to really make a difference when it came to messaging for prospective customers.

Mount Hotham has a strong retention rate of 70 to 80 per cent of guests returning every two years.

The Mt Hotham Board embraces the opportunity to meet the stakeholders and hear their concerns and assess their ideas to provide a greater guest experience at Mount Hotham.

These ideas and suggestions provide the basis for the resort going forward in a coordinated direction.

All the projects that are now being undertaken by the board are based on the four years of consultation, which has shaped the Mount Hotham Master Plan.

VSA questions Alpine Resorts changes THE Victorian Snowsports Association’s (VSA) annual general meeting has been told there is industry confusion surrounding the state government’s proposals to restructure Victoria’s Alpine Resorts management.

This follows public and stakeholder submissions to the government’s Alpine Resorts Governance Reform (ARGR) discussions paper in March and ongoing concerns about the changes that have been expressed by the industry.

Former VSA president Rob Anderson said that notwithstanding the government sponsored stakeholder workshops and a meeting with the minister, it was unclear what was motivating the government to change resorts management, including the two options being canvassed.

The first would lump all resorts under one overarching authority, while the second breaks resorts into regions based on geography. In the second option Mount Buller and Mount Stirling would be joined

by Mount Hotham and Falls Creek in a northern alliance, and Lake Mountain and Mount Baw Baw would form the southern group.

Mr Anderson said that while the government was siting climate change as the principal reason for the review, it had not fully considered or explained the economic consequences of its proposed changes.

‘The VSA has been encouraging governance reform for over a decade to make snowsports more affordable and competitive with other sports and tourist destinations; this has not happened,’ he said.

‘Instead of costs being under control, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has cost shifted, to a significant extent, to snowsports users, causing further pain for users who remain unrepresented on resort boards.’

‘Resort rates and service charges have continued to rise sharply. Any new management model must address a more competitive market and costs must be more equitably shared, including access to municipal style funding for resorts capital works similar to what councils enjoy,’ he said.

Since seeding competitive snowsports administration to Ski and Snowboard Australia, VSA has changed its constitution to represent snowsports consumers, resort ratepayers and commercial operators.

Incoming VSA president John Aird , who also chairs the Mt Buller Ratepayers Association, said there was no direct representation currently on resort boards for user groups and it was vital to have a strong representative body to work with government on management and governance issues.

‘We see the VSA as the coordinating representative organisation to engage with government and the resorts to ensure equity, governance and performance for all users,’ he said.

‘As such we intend to play an active role

in negotiations on resort management changes, including a structure that provides direct representation for user groups in future plans.

‘The VSA was responsible for negotiating fairer Plain English Leases for ski clubs and units and has also advised clubs regarding lease renewals; we intend to continue this work.’

Other members of the VSA committee elected at the AGM were vice president David Risby, who is also president of Falls Creek Alpine Association, John Jenkin secretary, and vice president Mount Baw Baw Ratepayers Association, and Rob Anderson treasurer, and secretary Mt Hotham Ski Association.

Meanwhile DELWP has been undertaking an assessment for Victorian alpine resorts on planning adaption to climate change to identify current scientific research and anticipated impacts of climate change for alpine environments and their vulnerabilities.

Workshops titled The Alpine Resorts Climate Change Adaption project have been held at all resorts to attempt to find ‘shared values’ on the mountain and in the region.

The findings and consensus attained through the workshops process will likely be the foundation of the state government’s medium to long term policy concerning the alpine resorts.

Celebrating 60 years of Victorian Interschools

THE 60th Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships will be celebrated this year at Mt Buller. It is an extraordinary achievement by the schools, the sport, event management groups and Mt Buller over this time.

The Interschools began with a handful of Alpine Skiing competitors from two schools in 1958. Approximately 2800 students from 180 schools will compete in nine disciplines totalling approximately 6000 event entries in 2017.

The Subaru Victorian Cross Country Championships will be conducted at Mt Buller on Sunday, August 6. The Tirol flat Cross Country (XC) course, which was designed in conjunction with Ski and Snowboard Australia will be open on Saturday, August 5 for training. Over 800 event entries are expected in this fantastic event.

The Subaru Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships will be hosted at Mt Buller from August 21 – 27. Students will compete in the disciplines of Alpine Skiing, Moguls, Ski Cross, Snowboard

Cross, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Slopestyle Skiing and Slopestyle Snowboard.

The top 15 individuals and top six teams from each event will qualify for the Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships.

The Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships as well as the South Australian Schools Snowsports Championships will also be hosted at Mt Buller in 2017.

Event manager for Interschools at Mt Buller David Speirs, said that everyone was excited about the upcoming season.

“The team that put on these events have been working hard on the planning and are continually looking to improve all areas of the event experience including new live timing and scoring across all events,” Mr Speirs said.

“Our goal is to stage world class Interschools events that are not only accessible but deliver an extraordinary competition experience for all levels of participants, as well as their families and schools.”

NONE of us want to think we will fall on our skis or snowboards, however, lets face it, falling is part of it.

This is a great exercise to not only prepare your body to take a fall, but also to safely and effectively get back up.

X Take push up position on your knees or toes X Keep your body moving as a strong unit X Take a push up and as you push up, rotate to one side X Repeat on the other side X Keep your core activated and strong

THIS works all the main leg muscles (quads, hamstrings and glutes) at the same time.

On snow, we spend a lot of time in this deep squat position so getting used to it and working through this range of motions is a must.

THE 2016-2017 northern r winter was a big season for the Australian Austr tral a ian XC Ski Team. While we are still dreaming of the results achieved by the other Ski & Snowboard Australia disciplines (Britt Cox, amazing), a number of milestones were passed that deliver a lot of hope for the future.

A really positive aspect of the season was the breadth of events contested and the number of athletes involved. Throughout the season Australian teams raced at the World Championships in Finland, the World Junior/U23 Championships in the USA, the World Universiade Winter Games in Kazakhstan, the Asian Games in Japan, and World Cups in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Estonia, Sweden, Norway and Canada.

The team also competed at continental cups, national championships and national cup races in most of these countries and more. On one weekend alone in January, AUSXC athletes competed in eight different nations on three continents (not counting anyone back in Australia).

Two highlights during the season were team efforts, which are not as common in what is mostly an individual sport. The 4 by 5km relay team of Jessica Yeaton, Aimee Watson, Barbara Jezersek and Kat Paul was the first relay team of either gender to finish at the World Championship since 1993, a task that has become increasingly harder due to short laps and the risk of being lapped out.

A four athletes gave it their all All on the day to get the team across the line in 14th place. At the Junior World Championship, the boys’ team of Liam Burton, Seve de Campo, Jarrah Forrer and Matt Bull were the first relay team to be entered since 1995, and they also did their country proud, finishing in 15th.

Prior to this season Australia had 3 individual World Cup points to our name, scored by Paul Murray in 2005 (2) and Ben Sim in 2009 (1). Twenty-fourth is also now Australia’s best result at the Nordic World Championship, courtesy of Barbara Jezersek in the 15km Skiathlon on Lahti.

Collectively the team picked up one top 30, two top 40s (Barbara and Jess), three top 50s (Phil, Barbara and Jess), and just about everyone racing at the Worlds scored a personal best result.

The last milestone to report on this season is from the Asian Games in Sapporo, where Australia competed as a guest nation for the first time. Casey Wright stunned the field to win the Sprint qualification, and then went on to finish in 3rd place in the A-final, the best result for the Australian Team at the games. Technically it wasn’t a podium, but we are claiming it. Today an Asian Games podium, tomorrow the World.

The low down on correctly fitting Snow Chains

◆ THE RIGHT FIT: Correctly fitting the right snow chain will make for a safe drive in the snow and also prevent both tyres and chains from wearing out sooner than they should.

BEFORE installing and using any snow chains, always read the vehicle’s owner’s manual and follow the fitting instructions that have been supplied with the snow chains.

This is important as the Konig, Rud and Thule snow chain warranty/guarantee does not cover any snow chains that are used on a vehicle that is fitted with wheels, tyres or a wheel/tyre combination, that is not approved to be fitted with chains by the vehicle manufacturer.

For wheel chains to work effectively they must be able to rely on the compound and tread of the tyre to be able to grip to the chain mesh and to help prevent the wheel from spinning inside the chain.

There are issues even when a diamond pattern snow chain system is used on high performance 2WD or AWD “summer” tyres.

On summer tyres snow chains will grip to the snow/ice but the tyre can

slip or spin the chain even when they are tightened on to the tyre.

The problem is compounded by the camber of the road, the weight and torque of the vehicle, the tyre width and the amount of tread on the tyre.

Wheel chains fitted to summer tyres on the front wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but can not assist with lateral stability. Because of the inadequate grip on the rear tyres the vehicle will over steer and when braking the ABS system will be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. The problems are always worse when driving down hill.

Again the problems are always worse when driving down hill.

There are two basic type of diamond pattern wheel chain tensioning systems.

(A) Self-tensioning system, eg Konig/Thule T2 Magic, XG-CSCL-XS etc.

(B) Manual tensioning system, eg Konig/Thule Zip-CK-CB, Rud Grip etc.

The advantage of the selftensioning system (A) is that it prevents the chain from being over tensioned and with the manual tensioning system (B) the chain can be over tensioned if the tensioning chain is pulled up super tight.

This may be seen as an advantage, however, the tighter the chain the quicker it will show signs of wear especially when it is driven on a ‘bare’ road that is not covered by snow.

Snow chains do not have to be super tight on the tyre and with correct tension your chains will actually last longer, an advantage for you and for shops that hire chains.
