FRO M THE EDI T O R TOUGH TIMES are upon many parts of Australia, particularly the mining and petroleum industries. Until recently, these were the growth engines of the Australian economy, but their rapid demise has focused national attention on other sectors that might be able to fill their very large shoes.

Could agriculture be among that group? There are more than a few excited politicians talking about a “dining boom” replacing the mining boom, and what a sweet idea it is to think of the country turning back to the source of much of our original prosperity.

But as explained in our feature interview with Curtin University’s agribusiness expert, Professor Peter Batt, we are a long way from that happening. The problem is not so much on the demand side — the astronomical growth in food demand from China and southeast Asia is no mirage.

The problem is with our low ambitions in this country for agriculture, and the very real likelihood that hungry competitors will steal this once-in-century opportunity from under our nose.

Batt says that to compete with the rest

of the world and grab our share, we need multi-trillion dollar investment in irrigation and transport infrastructure.

We must protect large swathes of our production from drought and the reality of climate change, and industrialise our agricultural economy.

That doesn’t mean there is no room for the man (and woman) on the land. Batt is excited about new business models that allow small producers to benefit from economies of scale. And he points out that, if we make farming a much more reliable source of income, it will attract many more young people into careers in agriculture and into our regional communities.

Agriculture in this country is already doing nicely. As Richard Lewis of the Tractor and Machinery Association points out in this issue, new tractor sales were buoyant in 2015 for the second year in a row. In fact, he’s concerned about machinery supply keeping up with demand.

Let’s hope our industry and political leaders can turn that into a launching pad for a much bigger future for agriculture in Australia.

NEWS Greens leader breaks with policy on GM food Federal Greens leader Richard Di Natale has broken with his party’s policy by declaring he does not believe genetically modified crops pose a significant risk to human health.

The Greens oppose the use of genetically modified crops, arguing they pose significant risks to agricultural ecosystems and human health. But Senator Di Natale, who is trying to reshape the Greens as a more moderate party, told reporters last month there was no concrete evidence on potential health harms to people.

“The literature so far, on the issue of human health, hasn’t produced evidence of widespread and significant health harms,” he said.

“The bigger concerns are around issues of intellectual property.”

Senator Di Natale was reported by the ABC as saying his view on human health impacts of GM food and

crops did not alter the Green’s policy objectives.

He said the real problem was not GM technology, but the way it was applied and, as a medical practitioner, he did not have a philosophical or ideological opposition to the technology itself.

“The concerns are less around human health and much more around the application of the technology when it comes to giving farmers choice, ensuring that farmers are able to produce a nonGM product if they choose, making sure we don’t use this technology simply to drive up the use of more herbicides and pesticides, which is not which is not good land management,” he said.

“I think that’s where this debate needs to head.”

The news of Dr Di Natale’s position on GM foods and crops was welcomed by Cotton Australia chief executive officer, Adam Kay.

“Cotton growers have been using biotechnology successfully in Australia for 19 years, with significant benefits to the environment, farmers and the communities they support,” he said.

“Australia’s cotton industry is the most water-efficient and highest-yielding in the world, and its success is reliant upon efficient farm management practices, including the benefits brought by biotechnology. A sound argument could be made that, without cotton biotechnology, Australia’s cotton industry would be a fraction of its size, or even non-existent.”

“The use of GM or biotech cotton in conjunction with integrated pest management enables our growers to use far less chemicals - in fact, cotton growers use 95% less pesticide than they did 12 years ago.”

Growers urged to test soil after dry summer Grain growers who experienced extremely dry seasonal conditions in 2015 should determine their soils’ phosphorus status before sowing this year, according to the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

GRDC Southern Regional Panel member, Dr Mike McLaughlin, said in areas where rainfall was minimal in the 2015 growing season, there was likely to be little removal of phosphorus in the grain of low-yielding crops. This also applied to failed cereal crops that were cut for hay.

“Therefore, lower-than-normal maintenance rates of fertiliser phosphorus will be sufficient this coming season in many instances. In some cases, application of phosphorus may not even be necessary.

“Testing soils to assess their phosphorus status could save growers significant input costs. Fertiliser investment decisions should start with knowing how much phosphorus is in the soils where growers are planning to sow a crop,” said Dr McLaughlin, who is a soil fertility and crop nutrition scientist with the University of Adelaide and CSIRO. He said the rates of required fertiliser phosphorus normally varied with soil phosphorus status, soil type, target grain yields, climatic conditions and method of phosphorus fertiliser application. Normally, a major proportion of phosphorus was taken up by crops from soil reserves, with only about 20%

from freshly-applied fertiliser. Dr McLaughlin also suggested it would be worthwhile assessing the status of other plant nutrients by testing soil before sowing or plant analysis during crop growth this year.

“Targeting fertiliser inputs to the most deficient soils on the farm is likely to give the greatest return on investment,” he said.

NEWS Sales continue to defy sentiment Supply to be an issue in 2016

With Richard Lewis, executive director TMA New tractor sales in 2015 increased across the country by 10% from 2014 — a remarkable result that continues the run of five consecutive years of more than 10,000 units sold for the year.

The 11,500 units sold in 2015 shows the strength of the sector and the ability of farmers and contractors to upgrade their machinery, regardless of the seasons. Low interest rates and a need for technology is driving the demand and we see no reason for this to abate in the year ahead.

Sales of combine harvesters ended the year up 16%, which was also in line with the five-year average of 700+ units delivered.

Sales of balers and haytools remained steady, with round balers making up 65% of the 800 units delivered around Australia in 2015.

The dry summer and drought conditions in parts of the country will drive hay production in those areas that have a favourable season. We therefore expect sales of hay equipment market to remain strong through the 2016 season.

Last year there was widespread concern about upward pricing pressure given the drop in currency, and this drove forward ordering at dealerships. Although there has been some uplift in pricing, the factories around the world recognise that demand is isolated to certain areas like Australia and that the price increases will have a negative effect on the demand.

Meanwhile, the TMA is busy representing our industry at

both factory, importer and dealer level. We are working closely with regulators such as the road authorities and OH&S bodies providing information on machinery and how it is used, to ensure any new rules or laws make sense for our industry.

Our conference this year promises to be excellent. With over 170 delegates attending in 2015, we are hoping to top 200 this year. Save the date of 19 July at the MCG, our traditional venue.

We will have a vast array of speakers looking at our industry, with a focus on dealers and technology. Skill shortages and training remain at the forefront of issues in our industry, with the agricultural sector generally screaming for trained people.

We are staying close with Auto Skills Australia to ensure we are part of any developments in training young people needed for our industry.

Looking ahead, 2016 looks promising, with many companies reporting strong forward ordering for harvesting equipment and tractor demand remaining high in most areas.

Our concern is that around the world demand for machinery is low and the factories have cut back production. With Australia representing only 4% to 5% of global sales, we are concerned that supply might become an issue.

Strong demand is a good problem in most cases for dealers as it gives them a chance to move used inventory to satisfy their customers needs. Any dealer who has been around for while will have seen this cycle over the years. Although not ideal, it serves a purpose in clearing yards and repaying debt against trades and floorplans.

We look forward to the year unfolding and look to the skies for that early break in autumn to head into a good growing season.

NEWS NEWS BRIEFS First ag commissioner welcomed NSW Farmers Association has welcomed the announcement on 24 February of Mick Keogh as the inaugural Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Agriculture Commissioner.

President of the association Derek Schoen said Mick was well known and highly regarded by the agricultural community.

“He brings a depth of understanding about the complexity and sensitivity of our agricultural supply chains and he will be a valuable source of practical knowledge for the competition regulator,” he said.

“For the first time ever, farmers will have a voice at the decision making table when the commission makes important decisions about both competition and consumer protection issues,” Mr Schoen said.

$75,000 in grants offered The AW Howard Memorial Trust is offering almost $75,000 worth of travel and industry grants to help researchers and industry extension staff to stay informed of developments in the technology and management of pastures.

Grants are generally awarded to fund research field trips, presentations and attendance at national and international conferences. Over 300 grants have been awarded since the Trust was established by the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science in 1964. In 2015, 19 grants were awarded with a value of $57,500.

This year, the Trust is also offering the Pastoral Industry Extension Study award of up to $20,000.

New plan to boost infrastructure The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has welcomed the new plan to improve the competitiveness of the agriculture industry through infrastructure investment as outlined in the Australian Infrastructure Plan Priority List.

NFF Vice-President and Infrastructure Taskforce Chair, Fiona Simson, said she was particularly pleased to see the

Graincorp positions for stake in WA’s CBH GrainCorp has weighed into the controversial proposal to buy out WA growers from the Co-operative Bulk Handling (CBH) and float it on the stock exchange.

The operator of the largest grain storage and transport network in the eastern states announced this month it had agreed to join a consortium led by Australian Grains Champion (“AGC”) to takeover CBH. AGC has sent a proposal for the buyout to the board of CBH with a request it be put to CBH’s grower members.

GrainCorp managing director, Mark Palmquist said he saw “enormous strategic merit” in the Australian Grains Champion proposal.

“Our willingness to support it is based on a view the investment presents a compelling opportunity for WA growers, while also delivering opportunity for CBH, GrainCorp’s shareholders and Australian agriculture more broadly.

“Importantly, the decision to proceed is ultimately one for Western Australian growers and we respect that process.

“We believe we offer significant value to CBH through our experience as a listed agribusiness, our complementary operations and grain processing capabilities,” Mr Palmquist said.

Graincorp’s role in the proposed buyout of CBH is to provide AGC with $300 million by subscribing for notes issued by the consortium, paying Graincorp an interest rate of about 6%.

Under the terms of the deal, Graincorp would be issued with warrants that entitle it to buy $300 million in shares in AGC after listing, and an option to buy another $300 million in new shares in the next five years.

AGC is led by a breakaway group of growers that believes CBH is inefficient and should be commercialised.

But there is also strong resistance from many WA growers, and the intervention of Graincorp will fuel concerns the proposal will seem them lose control of a vital aspect of their farming operations.

MY VIEW Australia a long way from achieving the ‘dining boom’ Agribusiness expert says major changes needed in the way we think about agriculture A recent ANZ Bank forecast of a surge in Chinese food demand of at least 50% over the next five years has fuelled perceptions of an imminent ‘dining boom’ for Australia. While Australia has some natural advantages that will help it boost food and agricultural exports, one of the country’s leading agribusiness experts, Professor Peter Batt of Curtin University, warns that fundamental changes are needed before Australia can reach its potential.

Q: What do you think about this notion of a dining boom for Australia? Are you concerned there seems to be a lot of complacency built into that idea?

A: Absolutely, it’s not only complacency but I would suggest there is also a sense of unrealism from our politicians, who basically don’t understand the industry nor do they understand the competition on the world market. I would really like to say there is a potential dining boom, but the reality is there is not.

Q: Why are likely to miss out?

A: There are three principal factors underling my response. First, we must acknowledge we are not the only kids on the block. In Australia, we often take the view that our produce is a gift to the world. Sure, we might have a great reputation in the market and some of the safest and best quality product, but so do many of our competitors, and they also do it a hell of a lot cheaper.

The second reason is our inability to increase production to meet rising demand, at least not for many years. It takes time to build up stock numbers, to plant fruit/nut bearing trees and for farmers to adjust their cropping patterns and rotations.

The even bigger constraint behind any efforts at the farm level to boost production is the lack of resources such as irrigation, road and rail. We have abundant land, but its worthless

 Professor Peter Batt without water and the means to get products to market cost competitively.

There is a chronic under-investment not only in infrastructure, but also in improving productivity on-farm. ANZ has estimated we need $1.2 trillion invested before our agricultural sector can meet is potential.

Finally, lets not forget about local producers in our target markets. They too will respond to the emerging opportunities presented in their local market. For example, there is a massive expansion of dairy underway in China.

Q: Why do we need so much more infrastructure?

A: The lack of infrastructure is seriously affecting Australia’s ability to match its competitors as a quality supplier. Quality is not just the about the product for export customers. It’s about logistics and the consistency and reliability of supply. And that’s one of the most significant negative factors that has an influence on Australian agriculture. For our major products such as beef and cereals, we remain very dependent on climate and experience a high level of year-to-year variation in productivity because of

cyclones and droughts.

That’s a problem not just for buyers, but also for investors. It’s very clear this variability is impacting negatively on overseas investors decision to put their money in Australian agriculture because they want a predictable and consistent return.

I don’t think we have made enough investment in things like irrigation and we are starting to see that for example in the Ord, where I don’t think we have really made the investments that we could have, should have and need to, to be able to respond to things like climate change.

The other thing that is emerging with the government’s push into northern Australia is other infrastructure such as road and rail. That was highlighted in 2013 when ADM tried to takeover Graincorp. They foresaw transport infrastructure as their biggest cost and promised to address the issue.

Q: The NFF last year launched the True Aussie brand for local beef. How important are brands when it comes to international markets?

A: As a nation we are really disadvantaged by not having a clear image or brand for our agricultural product, backed by strong marketing.

It’s difficult for Australia because we have such a huge diversity of product, unlike New Zealand, but we have to do much better. I was struck recently by an example of what we are not doing when I caught a skytrain in Kuala Lumpur. The entire inside of the carriage was decked out in Sunkist, which is the brand for citrus from California and Arizona. That’s the type of market presence that in Australia we just don’t have. And certainly in the grains industry, where I did work in 2011 and 2012, with the demise of AWB, we just don’t have a presence

anymore. The US has US Wheat Associates, which is absolutely killing us in the market in their capacity to promote American wheat products in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and so on. They are seriously diminishing our market shares.

Q: Big investment surely means big business needs to be play an even bigger role in Australian agriculture?

A: Yes, one of the big challenges is to change the mindset of agriculture as a family-run industry. We need to completely change the dynamics of farming and agriculture if we are to be globally competitive, let alone grab ourselves a share of this huge growth in demand in China and the Asia region. We need massive investment, and yes, much of that will need to be foreign investment, to match our competitors. The corporatisation

of farming and agriculture will undoubtedly accelerate under the pressure of global trends, but there is still a place for family farms. You don’t have to leave the land. You can be part of these transformational changes that I think agriculture needs to go through.

Q: How can small, family farms fit into this new world of agriculture?

A: There are other business models family farmers could adopt to achieve some of the productivity benefits usually reserved for corporate farmers.

I think co-operatives are going to make a comeback, especially if they put a lot of care into ensuring the consistency of product that overseas markets now demand. For example, one of the things I picked up in my research is the work by a couple farmers in South Australia who have introduced the idea of Geographical Indicators (GIs) to sell their wheat. GIs have been used by the wine industry for generations to define vineyard regions that produce consistent and identifiable grapes based on common soil, climate and other factors. Extending that to wheat

is an idea with excellent potential. It allows small farmers to get together and deliver a sufficient quantity of good quality product to meet the needs of the downstream buyer.

I am currently working on a similar project for the AGIC to supply oats to a customer in China who only wants a particular variety. A group or cluster of farmers is focused on growing a tightly defined variety using similar production systems and with tight controls on use of chemicals.

‘The advantage of working together in groups or clusters is you start to improve productivity, so more output with less chemical costs. The puts more money into the hands of farmers and will accelerate the benefits they achieve as a co-op.

Q: What about regulation and red tape? Have governments made enough improvement in that area?

A: The former Prime Minister said last year that Australian agriculture was open for business. Well, yes, but only if you are prepared to jump through a truckload of hoops. And the problem is not just government.

For example, if I happen to grow

cabbages for Coles and Woolworths I need two quality assurance systems because neither one will accept the others. We now have Aldi coming in, so how many more systems will I need, let alone all those I need to export, plus all the issues around my environmental management systems?

Q: Can we really overcome these many and complex challenges?

A: Yes, it is do-able with persistence, a well-thought plan and co-operation across all sectors. You can find solutions if you take a systems-based approach, looking at all the issues and how they interact, which is something I have been teaching at Curtin for almost three decades. Critically, it has to be led by industry, with government in a supporting role. We must also keep sight of all the benefits, not just the economic ones. If we can build an industry with more stable production and predictable income, instead the big highs and lows that are typical of farm incomes, we will have young people coming back to agriculture because it will offer a genuine career path. That would be a great thing for everyone in our regional towns and cities.

Bushfire-hit farmers getting back on their feet WA’s agricultural sector was hit hard by the devastating Waroona-Harvey-Yarloop fires in January and February, which killed two people and destroyed more than 150 properties.

But farmers are getting back on their feet with support from local communities and the WA’s Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA).

WAFarmers is keen to thank DAFWA for its continual support of dairy farmers and the broader agricultural sector.

Road closures as the result of the fires have caused havoc for dairy farmers with, tankers unable to reach many farms for several days, causing many farmers to dump thousands of litres of milk.

WAFarmers Dairy Council President, Phil Depiazz, said DAFWA had continually advocated on behalf of dairy farmers and the greater industry throughout the ordeal.

“Relationships between dairy farmers and authorities have been strained over the last week as farmers try to do what’s best for their dairy cows while, at the same time, dealing with a backlog of milk,” Mr Depiazzi said.

“While the dumping of uncollected milk was a necessary 10

action for many farmers, WAFarmers Dairy Council commends DAFWA for their understanding during this difficult time as farmers use alternative methods to dispose of their milk.”

The extent and severity of the fires also meant the need for assistance in fire recovery was urgently required, and WAFarmers said it applauded DAFWA for its quick work in compiling relevant information for all people within the agricultural sector.

“Comprehensive information for all producers within the agricultural sector has been collated and is easily accessible on the DAFWA website,” WAFarmers president Dale Park said.

“Information regarding support services, donation and volunteer drives, livestock assistance and management of soils, pastures, grapes and wine is all readily available, and we encourage anyone within the sector affected by the fires to visit their website or call DAFWA for additional support.”

NEWS New advice for southern region growers Southern grain growers have the opportunity to tap into a new world of crop management advice with the release of three new winter cropping GrowNotes by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

Incorporating the latest research findings and management advice for southern region growers and advisers, a new suite of GrowNotes on Wheat and Canola was launched at the GRDC Grains Research Update in Adelaide on Tuesday, 9 February. The Barley GrowNote was launched at the GRDC Update at Bendigo on 23 February.

GRDC GrowNotes have become an essential ‘go to’ resource for growers throughout Australia. The crop-focused publications can be found at www.grdc.com.au/GrowNotes.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair, Keith Pengilley, describes the GrowNotes as “living documents” that are regularly updated when the latest research results come in.

“The biggest thing I see with GrowNotes is they give every grower the ability to look at the latest research that is coming out and use that to help them make the best management decisions they can on their farms,” he said Mr Pengilley says one of the key features of the GrowNotes is the comprehensive list of links that are within them.

“If we, as growers, need to know more information or contact the researchers and experts in those fields we have a pathway to get more in-depth information and have a discussion on how to use the information to enhance the crops that are about to be planted or are in the ground,” he says.

Another export win for farmers with end to $US15 billion in subsidies Australian farmers have scored another boost to their export prospects with an agreement by the 163 Members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to abolish all agriculture export subsidies.

The historic agreement was announced just before Christmas at the end of the 10th WTO Ministerial Conference, held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Federal Trade Minister, Mr Andrew Robb, who attended the meeting, said the agreement would bring an end to more than $15 billion of agriculture subsidies.

The deal would phase out export subsidies for agricultural commodities including sugar, beef, pork, lamb, dairy, wheat, rice, wine, fruit, vegetables,

processed foods and cotton.

“For decades, export subsidies have threatened the livelihoods of Australian farmers. Their abolition will permanently remove a long-standing source of distortion in global agricultural markets.”

“This is a major win for Australian farmers. It complements the gains already delivered through the trifecta of free trade agreements with Korea, Japan and China. And will build on benefits from the Trans Pacific Partnership when it is implemented.”

Mr Robb said it was the first time in 20 years that the WTO had delivered an outcome specifically on agriculture.

“As Chair of the Cairns Group of

agricultural exporting nations, Australia played a crucial role in achieving this outcome.”

WTO members also agreed to put limits, for the first time, on the ability of WTO members to use export finance programs that distort agricultural trade.

They also agreed to conditions to ensure international food aid didn’t damage global trade or production in aid recipient countries.

Mr Robb praised Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed for her leadership throughout these challenging negotiations and Kenya’s hosting of the Ministerial Conference.

NEWS New trials will lead to more profitable canola: GRDC A new project by the Grains and Research Development Council (GRDC) will fill gaps in our knowledge about growing canola in Australia and make it an even more profitable crop.

The five-year GRDC project aims to provide growers with a better understanding of the drivers behind canola’s development to help improve management of the crop and variety selection.

Growers and advisers will be able to use information generated from the project to help select a suite of varieties that are suited to sowing opportunities that most often occur in their district and also to exploit early or delayed sowing opportunities as the seasons dictate.

Leader of the South Australian component, Port Lincoln-based Andrew Ware of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), said further opportunity exists for growers to optimise production and profitability, despite canola being nationally embraced as a valuable break crop and oilseed commodity.

“Significant gaps remain in the underlying knowledge of canola

physiology and agronomy. This situation is exacerbated by canola’s expansion into new areas and the release of new technologies, including vigorous hybrid varieties bred for herbicide tolerance,” Mr Ware said.

The project, entitled ‘Optimised canola profitability – understanding the relationship between physiology and tactical agronomy management’, will involve physiological and agronomic research across nine cropping zones in the GRDC southern and northern regions, from SA’s Eyre Peninsula to southern Queensland.

“Although growers recognise the high profit potential and the farming system benefits of canola, there remains a perceived risk of growing canola largely due to the high level of inputs required, such as seed, nitrogen fertiliser, sulphur fertiliser and windrowing,” Mr Ware said.

“There is a need to determine the level of investment appropriate for these inputs on a regional scale and the agronomic management practices (for example sowing date decisions) that reduce the overall risk and increase the profitability of canola.

“Sound tactical agronomic decisions require an improved physiological understanding of yield and oil formation in canola, and how they are affected by variety or genetics, environment, and crop management, and the interaction of these three factors,” he said.

“Early sowing may provide a great opportunity to maximise canola yield, but selection of the correct variety is important.

“Canola yield and profits will improve through an increased understanding of canola physiology.”

Mr Ware said this would occur through: • Identifying the optimum flowering window to minimise heat and frost risk at specific sites • Identifying the variety x sowing date combinations that match the optimum flowering window • Managing biomass accumulation (of specific varieties) to maximise wateruse efficiency, optimise nitrogen use efficiency and minimise input costs Having optimised these steps, he said further investigation may reveal specific varietal adaptations that provide a yield advantage under specific stresses, such as heat, drought and frost, or provide further G x E x M synergies.

Mr Ware said information generated by trials being conducted under this project will add value to other trial results, such as the GRDC-funded National Variety Trials (NVT) and help explain difference in varietal adaptation and performance as a starting point to growing more profitable canola.

“The manner in which each canola variety develops can have a large influence on the resulting yield when planted at different times and in different environments.

“Going forward, there will need to be a focus on the development and delivery of information on new varieties in a way that is timely and relevant to growers and advisers.”

Cotton farmers’ survival threatened by worst spray drift in decades Off-target spray drift incidents have swept across Australia’s cotton industry, causing tens of millions of dollars in damage and threatening farm businesses, according to Cotton Australia.

Damage was recorded in all cotton-growing regions in NSW and Queensland in the past month, causing at least $20 million damage across an estimated 20% of the national cotton crop.

In the vast majority of incidents, the damage was caused by Phenoxy (2,4-D-type) spray that travelled during temperature inversions – in some instances, moving tens of kilometres from the intended target fields.

“Unfortunately, environmental conditions over December-January have combined to produce a ‘perfect storm’ for off-target spray drift damage,” said Cotton Australia chief executive officer, Adam Kay. “Heavier-than-usual seasonal rainfall has encouraged weed growth which, in turn, led to more spraying by farmers and applicators, and this has combined with temperature inversions to produce substantial off-target spray drift.

“I’ve been in the cotton industry for 30 years, and this is the worst year in memory for spray drift damage to cotton crops, so we are taking this issue extremely seriously.

“At least 60,000ha of cotton has been damaged already this season, which represents more than 20% of the entire crop. We estimate financial impact of this damage to be more than $20 million, and the season is only half-way complete. Every cotton-producing area in Australia has experienced damage, and in some

regions the damage to individual crops has been severe,” Mr Kay said.

“Most cropping farmers rely on Phenoxy (2,4-D-type) products and apply them safely and responsibly, but a few careless individuals and spray applicators are jeopardising the use of these products for everyone.”

Mr Kay says the national chemical regulator, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), was aware of the severity of the issue, and is currently conducting a review of 2,4-D pesticide and an assessment of environmental risks.

“With a review of Phenoxy (2,4-D-type) pesticide in place, additional scrutiny will be brought to bear on the use or misuse of these products, as the case may be,” Mr Kay says.

“We have also been in contact with state regulators in NSW and Queensland, the NSW Environmental Protection Agency and Biosecurity Queensland. These agencies will be putting inspectors into the field to investigate the causes of these spray drift incidents, and will share their findings with the APVMA for assessment and regulatory action.”

Mr Kay urged cotton growers to report any damage suspected to have been caused by off-target spray drift.

“Without reports of spray drift incidents, it is almost impossible for state regulators or the APVMA to take further action, and so we urge all growers, agronomists and consultants to file a report as soon as spray drift damage is observed,” Mr Kay said.

Cotton Australia is working with other industry groups, including grain and pulses growers, plus federal and state regulators to warn all farmers of the risks of off-target spray drift.

PRODUCT NEWS Ninox tacking drones to another level Ninox Robotics, the Australian tech start-up providing cutting-edge unmanned aerial systems (UAS), has announced the appointment of its Chief Pilot and purchase of its first set of drones.

These milestones are part of the company’s plans to be in the air with commercial services in the first half of 2016, following the successful trial of Ninox Robotics’ system last year.

During his time in the army, Smith served in a number of countries and theatres of war – including Iraq, Belize, Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands.

“Specialised UAS like the ones provided by Ninox Robotics far exceed the capabilities of consumer drones making headlines today,” Smith said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to be part of an organisation that will put militarygrade technology to work for businesses and landholders across the country. The data collected by the UAS will enable more informed decisions, pre-emptive issue management and improved response, security and safety.”

In 2015, Ninox Robotics conducted

a three-week trial of its UAS, which proved the technology’s usefulness in detecting invasive pests in rural areas, as well as its potential to aid in search and rescue and fire management operations.

It was the most ambitious civilian drone trial ever conducted in Australian airspace.

Smith and other Ninox Robotics UAS team members are currently undergoing an intensive month-long training course on the Bluebird Spylite drone system in Tel Aviv, Israel to master the technical specifications and unique capabilities of the Ninox Robotics equipment.

FUTURE FARMING Wheat ‘n sausages

Charlie Clemson believes you must make your own decisions. But that doesn’t mean the 46-year old is not open to other people’s opinions. He is quick to listen and interested in new ideas, whether they come from his own experience or technical advice from the experts.

On mainly flat, dry land near Griffith in southern New South Wales, south of Ardlethan, Charlie and his wife, Lou, run Wongajong — 2,400 hectares under till on

a red sandy loam base with a rainfall expectation of about 450 mm. They farm a combination of canola, wheat, barley and lupins, and keep an eye on the future.The Clemsons are attempting to defy the odds by planting and experimenting with diverse wheat seeds and mixing business to extend their income.

Encouraged to grow Bolac wheat, an early-sowing, slow-maturing wheat variety, they have since planted other slow-maturing wheats producing higher yields. Some of the Bolac wheat grains were a little small and can tend to waste, although Charlie admits they did have a successful couple of years with Bolac.

To increase income the Clemsons run about 200 cows and even have a sausage-making enterprise with outlets in Sydney. The brand name is WAGsnag — taken from a contraction of the farm’s name. The snags are reportedly real ‘goers’ in sporting clubs.

Other off-farm enterprises include the hiring out of light tillage equipment used for incorporating stubble and helping with soil moisture retention. The Clemsons wanted machinery to incorporate their stubble, rather than laying it on top of the ground. The machinery extends 12 metres across the paddock as it is dragged across the soil behind a tractor. It has two sets of discs that can chop weeds, dry grain stalks and leafy pulse crops.

“We are always trying something new and the stubble augmentation and cattle cross-breeding programs are adding to our income, especially when the weather goes the wrong way.”

Charlie argues that early wheat avails a “bigger cropping window” using less fertiliser, although he confesses it is a little tricky with a longer growing period and early maturing.

Charlie is at pains to explain their good credentials as sustainable farmers. They use a bare minimum of insecticides in producing crops. “We do care what we put on the table, but scaremongering drives me insane.”

The Clemsons have three teenage sons, Will, Tom and Sam, who are shaping up as future achievers getting a good education in Sydney.

Charlie’s motto is: instead of ‘buying the place next door, it is better to build your efficiencies’ – every corner of Wongajong is gainfully used and a testament to good farm management.

“You’ve got to farm what the season throws at you to succeed. If you have to turn that crop to feed, you do it,” said Charlie.

NEWS Emmetts Acquires Rosenberg Machinery Group Privately held Victorian John Deere dealer, Emmetts, has announced the acquisition of South Australian based John Deere dealer, Rosenberg Machinery Group Holdings.

Effective 14 October 2015, Emmetts will take 100 per cent control of RMGH, a family run business which features dealerships in key South Australian agricultural regions, including cropping, horticulture, irrigation and grazing.

Emmetts’ managing director Peter Emmett said the acquisition was in line with the company’s strategic growth objective. “Emmetts has recognised over the past years that we needed to grow our dealership footprint and the opportunity with Rosenberg’s is a good fit for both businesses.”

Emmetts operates four dealerships across Victoria’s Wimmera Mallee and the acquisition will provide the company greater exposure to diversified agricultural practices and the scale to provide world-class sales and integrated service solutions.

RMGH operates dealerships in Kadina, Murray Bridge, Parndana (Kangaroo Island), Pinnaroo, Renmark and Roseworthy employing more than 100 staff.

While branch branding will be changed immediately, RMGH customers should expect business as usual.

“We will be unifying branding under the Emmetts name and will work toward implementing our operating structure over the coming months which is a change from the branch

structure RMGH currently operates,” Peter Emmett said.

“There are great staff working in both businesses and this acquisition will provide clear career path, greater opportunity and meet our goal of delivering excellent customer service.

“At a customer level, farmers can expect business as usual from the RMGH branches that have supported them extremely well in the past. We expect to build on that history and sales and service performance.”

MARKETS NAB upbeat for agriculture in 2016

Our forecasts point to Australian agricultural prices trending higher in Australian dollar (AUD) terms in 2016, despite challenging international conditions. We forecast the NAB Rural Commodities Index to increase 12.5% in 2015-16, supported by a lower AUD. Looking at the wider picture for Australia, 2016 got off to a bad start in global equity and commodity markets. But despite these heightened global risks, our outlook for the Australian economy is essentially unchanged.

We continue to anticipate further recovery across the nonmining economy. We have revised down our AUD forecasts for 2016 and we now see the AUD falling as low as USD 0.66 in Q2 2016.

Beef prices have been hovering at record levels and the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator broke through the 600c/ kg mark in mid-January. However, with volumes down after a prolonged period of elevated slaughter, export values are likely to contract in 2016-17. In the medium term, we expect increased competition from South American beef producers in the key US market. Wheat should find some support from the lower AUD amid plentiful global supply and low global prices.

We forecast dairy prices to increase moderately despite tumult on global dairy markets last year and forecasts of slow growth in global prices.

Overall, the NAB Rural Commodities Index was stable in January - up 0.8% in AUD terms but off 2.3% in USD terms.

NAB’s Rural Commodities Index includes 28 commodities (wheat, barley, sorghum, rice, oats, canola, chick peas, field peas, lupins, wool, cotton, sugar, wine grapes, beef, lamb, pork, poultry, dairy, apples, bananas, oranges, mangoes, strawberries, broccoli, carrots, lettuce, potatoes and tomatoes).

The index is weighted annually according to the gross value of production of each industry in Australia.

The outlook for production depends in part on how much rain we see coming into autumn. El Niño made conditions difficult in parts of Australia last year but the latest rainfall outlook points to a wetter than average autumn. This points to a potential upside in production for grains and dairy, although we continue to forecast a contraction in cattle slaughter for herd rebuilding.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s three-month outlook to April projects above average rainfall across much of the continent, with the notable exception of the top end. Recent rainfall has followed this trend, with much of southeastern Australia and south-western Western Australia enjoying above average falls, but Cape York and northern NT missing out.

MARKETS Value of key farm products jumps to $37.9 billion The value of Australia’s major agricultural products remained buoyant in 2014-15, according to preliminary estimates released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in December.

The ABS estimated the total value of key products rose by 7% to $37.9 billion compared to 2013-14, with strong growth in cattle and calves (up 35%) and sheep and lambs (up 25%) driving the overall growth in value.

Crop values were mixed, with sorghum and oats increasing and lower values from production of barley, wheat and canola.

The value of sorghum jumped by 70% to $655 million thanks to increased production in Queensland and premium prices on international markets. Oats lifted by 11% to $296 million.

The ABS reported that sorghum production increased 70% across the

2014-15 harvest to an estimated 2.2 million tonnes compared to the 1.3 million tonnes in 2013-14.

This increase was predominately driven by average to above-average rainfall in December 2014 and January 2015, allowing more crops to be planted in sorghum growing areas.

Director of Rural Environment and Agriculture Statistics at the ABS, Katie Hutt, said the total area of sorghum in Australia increased by 37% in 2014-15 to 730,000 hectares, up from 532,000 in 2013-14, resulting in record high areas of sorghum.

“ABS export data reflects the increase in production with a higher demand from China, which accounted for the majority of Australian sorghum exports in 2014-15.”

The gross value of wheat production fell 11% to $6,914 million, although

this largely reflected a return to more normal levels of production in WA after a bumper year in 2013-14.

Wheat production was estimated to have fallen in Western Australia with frost and hail damage contributing to the decrease. Wheat production was also estimated to have fallen in New South Wales due to a dry finish across most of the state, adversely affecting yields,” Ms Hutt said.

The value of canola production declined by 18 per cent to $1,737 million, reflecting lower production and reduced international demand. The decline has been seen across most states with the exception of South Australia and Tasmania.

The value of barley production was estimated by the ABS to have decreased by 7% to 2,286 million.

NEWS Farmers let down by uncompetitive food manufacturers: BCA Australia’s farmers are being let down by an uncompetitive food manufacturing industry that is struggling to capitalise on the export potential of expanding Asian markets, according to a major new report by the Business Council of Australia (BCA).

The new study looked at the barriers to growth of agrifood, which the BCA defined as agriculture plus food manufacturing. “The two sectors need to be considered together as a single agrifood sector. They are critical components in the supply chain that produces the food that Australian and international markets consume.

Close to half of the agriculture sector’s total output is provided as a direct input for value adding by the food manufacturing sector and the success of the two sectors is inherently linked.”

The report states that agriculture in Australia has fundamental natural advantages, such as abundant land and natural resources that make it possible to achieve large scale and low cost structures.

More importantly, Australian farmers had dramatically improved their practices at a time when many local industries were going backwards. This was reflected in a 58% increase in agricultural productivity over the past decade, compared to only 5% across the national economy.

This improvement had been achieved by the widespread adoption of innovations such as minimum tillage, GM crops and digital technology, while a well-established research and development effort was continually handing farmers new practices to further improve profitability.

NEWS NFF urges parties to cross the TPP finish line The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has welcomed last month’s signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in Auckland and urged the swift ratification of the agreement to create new export opportunities for Australian agriculture.

In the grains sector, the agreement will result in the creation of new quota volumes for wheat and barley exports to Japan under the simultaneous buy-sell mechanism, which were valued at about $480 million in 2014. It will also provide for new quota access for roasted malt exports, while tariffs on exports of Australian wheat and barley to Mexico will be eliminated.

NFF President, Brent Finlay, said the TPP would eliminate 98% of tariffs on Australian agricultural exports to TPP countries, would build on existing trade agreements (Korea, Japan and China) and had potential to create longer term benefits for Australian farmers in countries where we did not have agreements in place, namely Canada, Mexico and Peru.

“We are delighted by the signing of the TPP and recognise the collaborative and constructive efforts put in by the Federal Government and industry groups in reaching this milestone,” Mr Finlay said.

“However, it is critical the next step is taken swiftly and that this agreement passes through each of the member country’s parliamentary processes, including here at home.

“What we need is for the clear benefits of this agreement and its potential to bolster Australia’s export opportunities and the broader economy to be recognised and for the ratification process not to be politicised and stalled.”

“The signing of the TPP is a game-changing move for Australian agriculture and a comprehensive and liberalising agreement for the Australian community. We now urge those involved to ensure the agreement is ratified so that our industry and the broader economy can reap the benefits of increased global market opportunities,” Mr Finlay said.

For the rice sector, the TPP results in new quota access into Japan with a new 6,000 tonne quota from entry into force, a reduction in tariffs on a number of rice preparation products, and an amendment to the WTO quota of an extra 60,000 tonnes of medium grain rice for processing use.

In the horticulture sector, the TPP will result in the elimination of all Canada’s horticulture tariffs and most of Mexico’s tariffs upon entry into force and most of Peru’s horticulture tariffs (currently up to 17 per cent) after 15 years.

In the dairy sector, the TPP will improve on the Japan Australia bilateral agreement to eliminate tariffs on certain cheese products, and provide tariff reductions and new quota allocations for remaining cheese products.

Study reveals Henty field days worth $92 million As the Henty Machinery Field Days (HMFD) heads into its 53rd year, an economic impact study has revealed the event contributes $92 million to the national economy.

A Crowe Horwarth undertaken last year showed the field days created around $30 million in economic value and sustained 321 full-time jobs in southern NSW and northern Victoria.

The total spend from the field days is worth $56 million each year, or $92 million with the multiplier effect, sustaining 986 jobs nationally.

The field days draw 47.5 per cent of visitors from more than three hours away.

Member for Albury, Greg Aplin, said Henty field days was heading into its 53rd year, but still had no plans for retirement.

“The economic impact study had examined the viability of the event with

a view to extending to other areas in future. The study found that through agriculture, retail, manufacturing, hospitality and sale of goods, there is $30 million generated over these three days by the exhibitors,’’ he said.

HMFD chairman Ross Edwards said the study had certainly spelt out the importance of the field days.

“To think this is the result of a one day header school in the 1960s makes one feel humble to be the leader of this massive achievement,’’ Mr Edwards said.

This year marks the 40th anniversary since the co-operative moved to a permanent site on the Cookardinia Road, east of Henty.

Among the features for the 2016 event will be the revival of the popular farm inventors award.

Farm inventors, backyard tinkerers and students are being sought to display their innovative ideas at the Agri-Innovators site.

HMFD chief executive officer Belinda Anderson said the decision to renew the farm innovation concept was made after inventors were left disappointed by the demise of the NSW Farm Inventor of the Year Awards.

“Entries can be any agribusiness invention, ranging from a mobile phone app or computer software program to the largest tillage machinery,’’ Mrs Anderson said.

“There will be a small entry fee to cover ticket costs but entrants will receive a listing in the official guide, exposure to the agricultural market place, and the opportunity to network with potential manufacturers.’’

Other drawcards at the 2016 field days will be the daily demonstrations of Parelli natural horsemanship, the sheep and yard dog trials, agronomy plots, 2016 Natural Fibre Fashion Awards, chainsaw carving, vintage farm machinery, and the Farm Gate Produce Market Area with entertainment

ANFD in Orange set for another strong year Last year’s rains in the Central West of NSW have buoyed spirits and set the scene for another strong attendance at the Australian National Field Days (ANFD) in October at Borenore, 15 kilometres west of Orange.

Established in 1952, ANFD is the oldest annual agricultural exhibition and has a strong following in the farm community around Australia. The event is run by a not-for-profit co-operative, chaired by Dan Toohey.

“The ANFD committee and staff work hard every year to provide our exhibitors and visitors with a field day experience that is second to none. We continually reinvest in our site and our field day resources.

“Our purpose-built facility boasts sealed roads, disabled access, well grassed sites, electricity to most sites, onsite security, full catering and bar facilities all in a pleasant bushland setting, with onsite staff to help ensure you have a successful

field day,” Mr Toohey said.

He said ANFD had a strong focus on delivering the latest technology and innovations in agriculture.

“Our goal is to make it easy for exhibitors to share their knowledge through practical demonstrations to dedicated and progressive agriculturalists.

Mingenew Expo moves to a new time on the calendar The Mingenew Lions Midwest Expo has been brought forward from its traditional date in September to August — the first change since the event’s inception 33 years ago.

Helen Newton, Chairperson of the Mingenew Expo, said many factors were considered by the Board of Directors before making the decision to bring the Expo forward.

“We took into account the dates of WA’s other field days and the everchanging agricultural season that has bought harvest closer to September for the Midwest.”

“We consulted widely and spoke personally to over 400 exhibitors. In addition, we sought feedback from Mingenew’s community and sporting groups, schools in the region, our suppliers and other Midwest events,” she said.

In 2016, WA’s premier agricultural event will be held on 10 and 11 August. This aligns Mingenew Expo more closely with the agricultural season and the other two major agricultural field day events.

Newton said the event organiser’s realised some major

changes were needed to keep the event successful and relevant into the future, despite a successful 33-year history.

“This new Expo era started in early 2015 with the formation of a skills-based Board of Management. The Board has had a busy nine months undertaking detailed evaluation of the 2015 event and is currently developing a strategic plan and updating the constitution to give Expo the structure it needs to thrive.

“There is a lot of good will towards the Mingenew Expo in the agricultural industry and the Midwest community.

“Our farmers, exhibitors and the Midwest community want to see the event thrive and we have received an overwhelmingly positive response to our decision to move to August,” Newton said.

Farm Fair grows along with Kapunda The 10th Kapunda Farm Fair will be held at the Kapunda Harness Racing Complex on 8 - 9 April 2016.

Perched on the northern edge of the Barossa Valley in some of South Australia’s best farm land, the Kapunda township is rich in history.

But the town is not relying on its past for its future. The town undergoing unprecedented expansion. Two new supermarkets are on the drawing board, J.T. Johnson and Sons are about to spend millions on a new pellet mill, and the Kapunda Bowling Club is relocating to an undercover facility at Dutton Park.

About $30m of new developments will create many new jobs in construction and on completion.

This year’s show will see and expansion of machinery displays and new exhibitors from around the country at the increasingly large event.

Riverina Field Days go from strength to strength When major media sponsors pulled out of the Yanco Field Days in 2006, many people thought the event’s days were numbered. But a determined band of local supporters moved the event to the Griffith Showgrounds under the name of Riverina Field Days and have taken it from strength to strength over past decade.

The event attracted more than 200 exhibitors in 2015, showcasing the latest agricultural machinery and the rich variety of produce from the region, including rice, cotton and wines.

This year’s event, on 13 - 14 May, will be another bumper year. Some new special attractions this year include the Hawkesbury Cattle Dogs, with five shows a day, a sheep display and demonstrations by the Griffith Motorcycle Centre.

Farm productivity ideas at major irrigation conference Australasia’s biggest irrigation conference in two years will provide farmers with a unique opportunity to discover the latest news in boosting productivity in the paddock.

The biennial Irrigation Australia International Conference and Exhibition takes place between 24 - 26 May at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The opening day keynote address will be delivered by the chief executive of IrrigationNZ, Andrew Curtis, who has led a number of industry developments in New Zealand over the past six years.

Curtis said water quality had declined over the past two decades in some of New Zealand’s intensively farmed lowland areas, leading to questions about increased irrigation development in the country.

“There’s a debate now about whether economic gain co-exist with environmental imperatives. My presentation will explain how solutions are being found, including innovative ways of working with local communities.

“We are also finding solutions by setting environmental limits, redesigning what was once solely irrigation water supply infrastructure, in combination with widespread uptake of SMART Irrigation practice. But key questions are can irrigators afford such an investment, and should they bear it alone,” Mr Curtis said.

IRRIGATION JCB Dieselmax has quick uptake with irrigators Bundaberg irrigation specialist, Sunfam, has found a rapid uptake for the JCB DieselMax in irrigation applications.

Sunfam was one of the very first dealers in Australia for JCB, adding to its long-standing position as a Yanmar dealer.

Sunfam’s Ian Loeskow said the first JCB installation was a replacement for an old Bedford diesel engine that was driving the pump on a center pivot irrigator.

“The customer wanted a heavily built, reliable engine to replace his Bedford. The JCB DieselMax was readily accepted by the customer, who was amazed by the fuel savings.”

“From that starting point, we have now installed more than 10 JCB DieselMax engines in Bundaberg and the surrounding regions.”

He said the decision to join with JCB came after assessing that the DieselMax engine was competitive in the marketplace.

“Our customers needed to be comfortable with the initial purchase price. The operational costs — fuel and spare parts — needed to stack up and there had to be timely access to spares. In all respects the JCB DieselMax has proven to be outstanding.”

He said JCB DieselMax is an ideal engine, able to handle a broad range of water pumping duties on the land.

“There are situations where the one pump installation is used by the same farmer for flood irrigation one day, trickle irrigation the next and a high pressure traveler the following.

“The JCB DieselMax can be set up to operate at speeds from 1200 rpm through to 2000 rpm to deliver the specific pressure and volume required.

“The strength of the JCB DieselMax is that it can operate efficiently at a variety of engine settings. These are very reliable engines which we can specify and install with confidence in remote locations,” Mr Loeskow said.

He said the Bundaberg region had a high demand for the design and installation of watering systems.

“Farming in this region is varied and extends well beyond cane farming, with macadamia and avocado trees plus vegetables. Irrespective of the farming operation, there is a yearround demand for water on the land.”

Mr Loeskow said Yanmar engines, which Sunfam had been buying since 2004, were still the dominant diesel engine brand.

“The Yanmar range up to 40 kW is excellent for our pumping applications, which requries continuous duty cycles. We prefer to keep the engine speed below 2500 rpm and, with bigger output engines, we aim to keep below 1900 rpm.”

Sunfam also rates highly its relationship with Power Equipment. Sunfam operates from two locations in Bundaberg with a JCB DieselMax on the showroom floor as a glowing endorsement of the brand.

“The real strength of the both Yanmar and JCB brands is the reliability of the product,” said Ian Loeskow. The price of parts is okay and the reaction times to our parts orders from Brisbane and Melbourne, is also very good.”

“The high number of repeat Sunfam customers who specify either Yanmar or JCB is a strong endorsement of the two diesel engine brands which we use in our irrigation systems,” Mr Loeskow said.

IRRIGATION Mapping out a bigger future for irrigation

Irrigation accounts for about 70% of water use in Australia, but is highly productive and profitable. Irrigated agriculture generates 50% of all agricultural profit from just 0.5% of farmed land.

Irrigated agriculture is supported by sophisticated water management arrangements that have undergone substantial reform in recent years to make water a valuable and traded commodity.

With growing global and domestic demand for food and fibre, the future prospects for irrigation in Australia should be strong, yet it faces several challenges.

Irrigation in Australia is concentrated in the Murray–Darling Basin, where over two-thirds of Australia’s irrigation water use occurs, even though the Basin produces only 6% of national runoff.

In future, less water could be available for use because of a return of some water to restore environmental values, and because of lower river flows as a result of climate change, bushfires, and changing land use.

Irrigated agriculture will need to respond to these challenges by increasing production efficiency (as was evidenced by some industries during the millennium drought), and through opportunities to improve water-use efficiency. Alternatively, there will be calls to expand irrigation elsewhere, such as in northern Australia, but these developments will involve far broader considerations than the availability of water.

Future prospects

There are strong economic prospects for irrigation. Growing global populations and a growing standard of living will increase demand for food and fibre over the coming decades. Demand for the expansion of irrigation is likely to

strengthen given the appeal of its high productivity and profitability. Australia produces enough food and fibre to support more than its own population, exporting 60% of its agricultural production.

Australia’s population is forecast to grow to about 35 million people by 2056 and food demanded by this population can be supplied at current production levels.

World prices of major commodities (grains, meat, and dairy) are projected to rise in coming years, with a continued growth in demand and will, all other things being equal, lead to the continued profitability of Australian irrigated farming. Although the growth in demand and increasing prices are generally favourable for irrigated agriculture, the dairy industry expects that price volatility will be a greater challenge than climate change or access to irrigation water.

The wine industry has experienced low prices for some years, and a shift from premium to bulk wines. The outlook is for continuing low wine prices. Thus, although sustained water access is important to irrigators, price and other terms of trade are crucial to profitability.

The irrigation industry has adapted to these pressures and so remains competitive in the global market.

New irrigation developments

With good prospects for irrigated agriculture but declining water use in the Murray–Darling Basin, there will be strong interest in developing other irrigation areas. Irrigation is increasing in Tasmania, where there are plans to develop an additional 120 GL/year from the current 636 GL/year, which is modest in scale compared with the Murray– Darling Basin. It is often speculated that there could be dramatic increases in irrigation, both in northern Australia and basins of the east coast of Australia, but a comprehensive assessment of opportunities and costs is yet to be undertaken. Possibilities include large

schemes to dam coastal rivers and transfer water over the divide into the Murray– Darling Basin or other western-flowing rivers. Such schemes may be technically feasible, but are not economic at present.

Improving on-farm efficiency

A number of improvements to on-farm efficiency have been beneficial in recent years and could be further developed and adopted to meet future reductions in water availability. They focus on producing more crop from less water, or more profit from the water used, by considering the whole farm enterprise and measures that improve crop quality, not just crop production.

The measures include new crop varieties, the use of deficit irrigation, irrigation flow monitoring, more even watering by laser levelling of fields, better irrigation scheduling, lining of farm channels to reduce seepage losses, and converting irrigation systems from gravity systems to sprinkler or drip irrigation.

Savings may be significant, but costly, and are not always profitable. Water is typically a small input cost on a farm and some of the measures increase other costs such as energy and capital.

As an example, improvements from new cotton varieties that are more drought tolerant have in some cases doubled water use efficiency from one to two bales of cotton per megalitre. Better soil management, irrigation scheduling, and on-farm design further enable more of the applied water to be used by the crop.

For grapes, the development of new rootstocks, and research around partial root-zone drying and deficit irrigation (applying less water than the crop demands), have lowered water applications by 30–50%. These have reduced yields but improved the quality (colour, tannins, etc.) and raised the price.

“We are known for finding solutions, and that’s because we take the time to ask a lot of questions,” he said.

He said there were many different combinations and exacting demands placed on valves, such as pressure, flow, temperature, media, voltage variance and the quality of the water and working environment.

In addition, Australia had a full range of climatic conditions and a huge diversity of agricultural and horticultural businesses.

“This complexity and the fact that valves must work hand-in-hand with a controller unit or a specific diaphragm valve meant you could not know the right valve until you had asked a dozen questions about the job it is expected to perform,” Mr Rohringer said.

IRRIGATION Irrigation vital to our most valuable asset - food

What Australian farmers and dealers do — or don’t do — now will shape our position in the global market.

Globalisation is taking hold at an alarming pace. Trade lines are being set up through covert deals, wars, currency manipulations and political alliances, and the rush to monopolise through network marketing. But everyone has some power still – if we work together.

Love them or hate them right now, the Deputy Leader is the Agricultural Minister. And the government is run by a Prime Minister with a business background. These are really important times because Australia is just one player, even in our own marketplace. This has always been the case to a certain extent, but multiply this by a million and you come close to what’s happening right now.

What we do right now cannot be underestimated. We can either bag our politicians or we can influence them. If you think you have no affect think again.

You do.

We have something great here in Australia, but change is inevitable. We will lose everything if we do nothing. Farmers know a lot more about the land than politicians, unless they are also farmers.

Irrigation specialists and Farmers know a lot more about how to care for crops, and the water supply than politicians do.

Politicians need your help.

We hear a lot about competition.

Competition is good. It keeps people innovating, it controls pricing and quality and customer service. The market place gets to demand what it wants as each Player strives to win business. This is competition at its best.

But in a global marketplace, the risks are very high and there is virtually no protection for consumers and businesses from those who try to set up monopolies.

We should have learned our lesson by now with the monopolies of our supermarket chains and the horrendous damage these have done to our economy and our health. The super powers of the drug companies use the same monopolising methods to grow business.

Deals are done without our knowledge and we have no power over these deals.

Products we could once buy direct may be acquired by a global firm who ensures a tight reign over the property rights, not through the legal channels so much as the monopolising leverage.

The global irrigation market is not immune. In the market today, some of the things we see happening include: • Cheaper imports that are not regulated for quality • Time proven equipment fighting for survival • Free Trade Agreements with Asia, close geographically • Large global companies ‘networking’ • Acquisitions • Multiple Branding of goods to give an illusion of competition • Misinformation easily sprouted on the internet • Popular journalism is mainly advertorial – without any check on truth or quality, without having to answer to anyone.

For Australia to take a good position in the global market, we cannot afford to lose time/money on shabby equipment, below standard communications such as the internet, and harmful practices. But most of all we want to keep control of what I believe is the world’s most valuable thing – our food. Health foods attract premium pricing. Australian food is healthy (for now, mostly). And to grow good food, you need good irrigation. This means: • good products; • people who know what they are doing and are on the ground assisting; • good backup – multiple branding is no good for anyone – companies always spend more on their main brand, so look for this; • spare parts or replacements, and • ongoing support to grow with technology to stay competitive.

Irrigators urged to get involved Victorian irrigators are urged to attend a major Water Forum with Water Minister Lisa Neville in Echuca next Thursday March 3.

“Our Victorian Farmers Federation Water Forum is open to all farmers, whether you’re a member or not,” VFF Water Council Chairman Richard Anderson said.

“This is your chance to hear from Minister Neville on the $2.1 billion GMW Connections Project, MDBA Plan and water trading, as well as ask her questions on these issues.”

Mr Anderson said the whole community needed to get involved in resolving the problems with the GMW Connections project.

“As we’ve said before the $2.1 billion Goulburn-Murray Water Connections project is clearly in trouble and is struggling to connect irrigators and deliver water savings by the 30 June 2018 deadline,” Mr Anderson said.

The VFF, United Dairyfarmers of Victoria and other industry groups have argued it’s time to cut the delays in delivering Connections deals with landholders and to clearly define the criteria to select which Strategic Connections Projects will progress.

“We’re encouraging all farmers to come along and tell us about their water issues, but we also want to hear your ideas for solving the problems. Now is your chance to tell Minister Neville how we need to get on with the job of getting Connections back on track,” Mr Anderson said.

Dromone is a world-class company that specialises in the design, manufacture and marketing of coupling devices in both the agricultural and construction markets.

TYRES New technology makes it better to run flat Driving a vehicle with flat tyres is normally unwise, unless its farm machinery.

New tyre technology has been developed that allows farmers to operate their machinery at lower tyre pressures, with benefits such as reduced soil compaction and decreased fuel costs.

The new tyres also have the advantage of improved traction, and the ability to carry larger loads, which is a significant benefit as farm machinery becomes heavier.

The technology, known as improved flexion (IF) or very high flexion (VF), has been embraced by the Alliance Tyre Group, a global tyre developer and manufacturer with distribution across 120 countries. Tyres 4U is the Australian distrtibutor for Alliance’s range of 34 IF/VF agricultural tyres.

Innovations in the structure of the tyre, including the use of steel belts, and new technology with rubber compounds allow IF farm tyre sidewalls to operate while flexing more dramatically. Steel belts distribute weight evenly & protect against punctures caused by harsh stubble.

Alliance IF farm tyres carry 20% more load at the same inflation pressure, or can carry the same load with reduced pressure. The higher rated Alliance VF tyres can carry 40% more load, or the same load with an even greater reduction in pressure.

The productivity benefits and improvements available with IF/VG tyres is about the same amount as the reduction in inflation pressure. For example, a 20% reduction in pressure

Agrowplow boosts factory to meet demand for new seed drill Agrowplow has boosted its local manufacturing capacity to meet strong demand for its newly released AD230 seed drill.

Agrowplow’s David Hobbs said he believed the AD230 had met unprecedented demand across nearly every state because of its versatility, innovative features and value for money.

“The new Agrowplow AD230 is well suited to most tasks – from sowing cereal crops, hay production and pasture renovation – across a range of farming enterprises. It also boasts a range of features, some of which are not available or uncommon on most other seeders.
