FRO M THE EDI T O R The good times are rolling for Australian grainfarmers, with a record winter crop taking the sting out of low wheat prices and providing one of the best annual incomes in years (page 4).

Looking ahead, no-one would dare dream of as much rain in 2017 as last year, but the long-range forecast suggests conditions will be okay. Farmers can also expect some help from a long-overdue improvement in wheat prices (page 17).

Another highlight of 2016 was an emerging shift in the attitudes of younger Australians about farms as a place to live and work. As the story on page 5 shows, this is being led by the rapid uptake of technology and the exciting potential for even more innovation in agriculture.

These developments are proving to be a magnet for bright young graduates and making farms a ‘cool’ place for a tech career. While it is still early days, the

tech-led entry of skilled graduates has the potential to revitalize rural communities and secure a brighter future for rural Australia in a much more enduring way than a run of good seasons.

All of this makes it even harder to understand the Federal Government’s weak response to fixing telecommunications problems in the bush (page 19). The lack of mobile and internet coverage is not just a roadblock in many parts of the country to productivity breakthroughs such as precision agriculture, it is slowing what could well be a tech-led revival of the entire rural sector.

NEWS Crop record puts strain on roads and ports Australian graingrowers have just completed their biggest harvest on record, according to the official forecaster.

The December 2016 crop report from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resources Economics and Sciences predicted the nation’s biggest-ever winter crop of 52.4 million tonnes, up 32% from last year. This year’s crop is well ahead of the previous record of 45.7 million tonnes in 2011-12.

ABARES said the strong growth reflected higher production from every state after a favourable seasonal conditions across most of the country.

On a state basis, Victoria is expected to post the biggest increase in winter crop production, up 109% to 8.7 million tonnes, compared to the previous year. Western Australia is forecast to lift by only 10%, but with production of 16.1 million tonnes should still deliver more winter crop than any other state. South Australia, NSW and Queensland are expected to increase output by 37%, 32% and 25% respectively.

For the major winter crops, wheat production is forecast to rise by 35% to a record 32.6 million tonnes, barley production is forecast to rise by 24% to a record 10.6 million tonnes and canola production is forecast to rise by 22% to 3.6 million tonnes – the third-highest on record.

Among winter pulses, chickpea production is expected to rise by 21% to a record 1.2 million tonnes as a result of an estimated increase in planted area and a forecast rise in the average yield.

Producers increased planted area in response to favourable prices earlier in the year. Crop losses resulted from severe spring storms in key growing regions, but this is expected to be more than offset by high yields in unaffected regions.

The first proof of Australia’s new crop record came in mid-January, when GrainCorp announced that its harvest receivals had reached 12 million tonnes, with record or near-record receivals at 26 of its country silos across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Graincorp general manager of operations for storage and logistics, Nigel Lotz, said it had been a massive operation.

“This is the biggest winter harvest since 2010/2011, where our network received 12.3 million tonnes by the same time.

While harvest is almost complete in Queensland and New South Wales, we expect the harvest in Victoria will continue up to Australia Day. “It’s really exciting to see some areas achieve high yields after extended drought, particularly north western New South Wales and western Victoria. Grain quality has also been good, especially across canola and wheat.’

Mr Lotz said Coonamble on the central western plains of NSW was Graincorp’s largest silo, with nearly 400,000 tonnes of grain received. Walgett and Thallon received nearly 300,000 tonnes. Other silos such as Barellan, Warracknabeal and Quambatook were on the way to receiving close to 200,000 tonnes.

“The planning and resources needed to scale up by over 60% compared to last year posed some challenges, however we were able to take full advantage of our network. In recent years, our focus has been on developing larger and more efficient country silos that provide better turnaround times and more segregations for growers.

NEWS Hi-tech grads in demand on Aussie farms Parts of Australia’s farming industry are rushing to recruit a new generation of tech-savvy graduates as the sector swaps its bucolic past for a future of drones, robots and automated sensors. The push comes as cuttingedge machinery is used to plug a labor shortage on the nation’s remote farms that threatens to derail its ambitions to become Asia’s food bowl.

“For the first time in many years, we’re finding it easier to attract graduates because agriculture, particularly technology in agriculture, is back on the radar,” said Felicity Hennessy, general manager of innovation at agribusiness Ruralco.

For years, potential recruits to Australian agriculture have been turned off by the harsh image of traditional farming, but a marked acceleration towards automation has piqued the

interest of young generations, with jobs available to do everything from developing crop-protecting drones to crunching data on cattle nutrition.

“The proliferation of drones and sensors are the key drivers,” said Hennessy, adding that Ruralco’s graduate program had seen a rise in the number and quality of applicants.

While Australia is among the world’s leaders in robotics for outdoor use, having given birth to the first robot to round up cattle, the A$4 billion agriculture technology industry is still in its infancy. It is mainly just a few companies that are big enough to recruit.

The nation’s largest cattle firm Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) is one of the local firms in the sector that has regularly been hiring tech-savvy youngsters.

“Interest in agriculture is rising, from engineers to science-type graduates,” said Gerard Davis, who heads a team of seven in an innovation department at AACo that started under three years ago.

Data from Rimfire Resources, a recruiting firm specialised in farming, showed 4,600 agricultural jobs were advertised on the internet in 2016, from an average of 3,750 in the past three years.

“It is difficult to say whether the increase is driven by technology, but there is a clear shift for off-the-farm roles,” said Nigel Crawley, a director at Rimfire Resources.

New degrees such as agri-sciences are being added by universities, with a sharp rise in students who do not have a farming background.

Mr Lotz said attention was now turning to the export program, with more than one million tonnes already moved from our silos to sub-terminals and ports.

“We have secured additional rail and road capacity to ship this grain, with the shipping stem heavily booked for the next six months,” Mr Lotz said.

TMA NEWS Year finishes on a high for tractor sales TMA News

2016 has been another extremely good year for the industry. Tractor sales recorded their best result in over 30 years and the sixth consecutive year of sales of at least 10,000 units. The last time we saw this happen was back in the early 80s.

Sales in the month of December were led by the small, under 40hp range (up 17% for the month) along with the 40 -100hp range (up 14% for the month).

Much of this activity occurred in Victoria and South Australia where there are larger numbers of “hobby” farmers. Victorian sales overall were in fact up a whopping 31% on last month to finish the year slightly down on last year.

The larger end of the market (above 200hp) took a breather in December, with sales down 17% on last month. However, the market was still very much in positive territory, with sales up 9% on last year.

The 100-200hp range was again strong, finishing the year up 7% Around the nation, NSW reported the largest increase in activity of any state, with sales increasing 14% on last year. Sales in Queensland and Western Australia were in line with last year.

Overall, the year has been dominated by the volume of large tractor sales which has led to an increase of around 8% on last year in dollar terms. Combine Harvester sales were also strong, growing for the third year in a row.

It has been six years since the last boom in demand and, combined with this year’s record winter crops, 2017 is shaping up as another very strong year for the sector.

Balers sales recorded their best result since 2011, capping off five years of continuous growth, while Round Baler sales lifted by 15%. Sales of Large Squares increased by almost 12% to a record level.

Out Front Mower sales climbed again to set another record result. This segment has averaged an exceptional growth rate

of 22% per annum over the past decade.

In 2016, growth was driven by the “ZeroTurns” product.

Having closed the book on 2016, we now turn our attention to the future outlook. While it might be considered brave to expect a repeat of the year we have just had, the indicators are that 2017 should once again be strong.

On a global basis, the market is still struggling. This makes Australia a destination of choice for most manufacturers and we should see this reflected in this year’s programs. When combined with the current low interest rate environment, the market should be attractive to buyers.

The weather forecast suggests we should see good conditions for growers again this year, and while prices remain a challenge, production levels are expected to remain strong.

Importantly, dealers and resellers are presently reporting a significant shortage of used equipment stock across the board, so prices for those considering trading up should be strong.

FUTURE FARMING Sheep, drones and tourism

In the hilly reaches of Quorn, Hawker and Cradock in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges thrives a multi-generational family of farmers known as the Hilders.

Simon Hilder, a 54-year-old sheep farmer, doesn’t stress easily, despite the challenges of the severe weather conditions of this region. Three Creeks Station, the family’s 25,000-acre farm, sits atop hundreds of small hills, 20 minutes east of tiny Cradock and over 300 kilometres north of Adelaide.

The area has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cool winters. Rainfall is very sparse throughout the year, although last year the Hilders experienced a lush of rainfall

of 13 inches beyond the usual 10-inch winter rain. The grass was a foot high and the sheep thrived. November’s wet thunderstorms posed no risk in this fire-prone area but a couple of bushfires were contained in the 2017 season.

Simon’s wife Amanda teaches 40 students in nearby Hawker ranging from ‘reception to year 12’ grades. The town of Hawker and surrounds is the subject of a book due for release early this year, providing a backdrop to a mystery with many twists and turns, amid adventures, also showcasing Aboriginal customs, farming and the countryside.

The Hilder youngsters, 10-year-old Emily and Lachlan who is seven, love the farm life, egged along by a game the kids play called Hay Day, an intuitive farming game. Simon and Amanda had their children later in life than expected but would not have it any other way.

FUTURE FARMING The quietly-spoken, almost laconic Simon has his heart in farming and is always open to new ideas. He believes the new drone technology would be useful in this difficult and rough terrain to locate natural occurrences and to help with the muster of his 1,000 merino sheep that he manages on three paddocks of 5,000 acres.

The Hilders lease out a further 20,000 acres because they could not find skilled riders to help them muster the sheep during shearing, crutching and lamb tailing. Simon says helicopter mustering would pose an expensive option.

“The availability and skill level on the motorbike wasn’t there. Anyone can ride a motorbike but fetching sheep from the hills is difficult,” Simon explained.

The Hilders mustered with horses in the past but the horses got too old and it was ‘hard-going and tiring for the riders.’

Simon says he would consider buying more sheep when they have the money. While he could turn his hand at many things outside of farming, he believes you should produce quality work and stick to what you know well, unless it is extending your base of knowledge and application.

What next?

Three Creeks Station is having a crack at tourism, a dream they’ve held for many years. The property has an unspoilt, secluded and relaxing environment. Its wilder parts boast large hills running into each other, forming amazing points of interest for campers, walkers and all-wheel drive enthusiasts.

The property’s natural springs, scattered throughout the hills, have been a boon to grazing since the late 1800s.

The hills are covered in spinifex and native pines while the creeks are lined with big old gums. A favourite time of the year is when the wild flowers arrive after the rains, providing a carpet of colours from the native species.

The greater Hilder family is spread around the district, with cousins galore, one of whom owns the local Cradock pub, providing a convenient opportunity for Simon to visit his relatives, he says with a wry smile. Five generations of Hilders and Amanda’s forebears have populated the area with their descendants living close by, which no doubt causes confusion for many a courier.

Simon is content with the life, plays cricket and was a footballer in earlier days in the Northern Area League. He loves his golf and taking the kids to Cinema Augusta in Port Augusta to see a movie.

The couple have their ears to the ground and will continue to innovate and be flexible enough alongside a small but growing bunch of farmers who believe tourism might hold a key to their future. While drones may sound futuristic, watch out for a Hilder brand below your southern cross.

NEWS UWA unlocks key to breeding drought-tolerant wheat Research into how different wheat varieties respond to drought, published by researchers from The University of Western Australia, has created new promise for breeding drought-tolerant wheat.

Water shortage is a major factor limiting crop yield in most regions where dryland rain-fed farming occurs, such as Western Australia’s grainbelt.

Leading researcher, Professor Guijun Yan from UWA’s School of Agriculture and Environment and Institute of Agriculture, is working to develop climate-ready crops that are adapted to water stress.

He said the extent of yield limitations due to water stress lays heavily on the particular growth stage at which plants experience the stress, and the reproductive phase is the most critical.

Water was withheld during the reproductive phase, meiosis, in 46 different wheat varieties, to examine the effect of induced drought on the viability of male and female reproductive parts of the plant. Grain number, a major yield component, was used to measure the effect.

Professor Yan said the results indicated that both the male and female parts were sensitive to water stress during meiosis, not just the male part as was previously thought.

“We identified for the first time that the stressed female

reproductive part was one of the major contributors to low grain number in wheat varieties that were water-stressed during meiosis.

“Based on the results of this study, we can conclude that selective screening of grain number for parental lines that are tolerant to water stress during meiosis is a promising way to breed superior drought tolerant wheat,” Professor Yan said.

The new insights were published in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science. This publication forms part of the PhD research of Ms Ifeyinwa Onyemaobi supervised by UWA Professors Guijun Yan, Kadambot Siddique, and Dr Helen Liu.

NFF calls for farmer-focused tax reform The National Farmers Federation says Australia’s tax system is in desperate need of reform and is calling for sensible, forward-thinking changes to allow farm businesses to operate to their potential.

The call comes on the back of a new report, supported by the NFF, looking at the impact taxation policy has on Australian agriculture.

The report titled ‘Tax in Agriculture’ is designed to prompt a discussion between the agricultural sector, policy developers and politicians on tax policy and appropriate reform.

NFF acting chief executive officer, Sarah McKinnon, said farmers were subject to a ‘clunky’ and ‘complex’ tax system that was stifling their ability to grow.

“Australia needs a tax system that is simple and helps businesses compete in a global marketplace. Every cent counts.”

The ‘Tax in Agriculture’ report argues for a single company tax rate of 22%, even lower than the 25% rate that the Government is targeting.

Ms McKinnon said multiple small business thresholds were confusing and counterproductive.

“We need a single ATO definition of small business and a turnover threshold of higher than $2 million. The NFF recommends the Government consider the $5 million threshold suggested in The Henry Review.”

Ms McKinnon said the Government had made some recent positive in-roads into tax reform to assist agriculture.

For example, the NFF supports the Government’s budget announcement to allow farmers to offset farm managemenr deposits (FMDs) against farm debt interest charges.

“However, FMDs are only available for individuals yet various forms of

farm debt can be held by partnerships, companies or trusts. This is deterring banks from offering FMD offset facilities. If FMDs were available at the entity level, this valuable reform may actually be useful in practice.”

In Summary

The NFF is seeking the following key tax reforms: The cutting of the company tax rate to at least 22% - preferably lower.

A single ATO definition of small business to a turnover threshold of $5 million as suggested in The Henry Review.

Farm Management Deposits made available to entities not just individuals.

The preservation or suitable replacement of the accelerated asset depreciation scheme.

A review of tax zone rebates and remote area fringe benefit tax.

NEWS Case IH celebrates 175 years of agricultural equipment production in 2017 Case IH is beginning a year of celebrations to commemorate its 175th anniversary at the brand’s global headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin. It was there, on the shores of the Root River, that founder Jerome Increase Case established the Racine Threshing Machine Works to produce a revolutionary machine to speed up the separation of grain after harvest.

“I find it amazing to see just how far the farming industry and our company have come during the last 175 years especially given the fact that we are stronger than ever before today,” Case IH Brand President, Andreas Klauser, said.

“The common theme which has always guided our innovative approach is to provide customers with ever-improving technologies that enable them to farm more efficiently and profitably. Mr Case began this tradition having worked extensively with farm equipment before he started his own business and it became his lifelong passion,” Mr Klauser said.

“He believed that every piece of equipment manufactured by his company must deliver on the brand promise and saw to that personally. There is a famous account of him traveling to another state to investigate a product issue, even when he was well into his later years. Those principles continue to inspire and guide us today.”

The company’s beginnings were closely linked with those of the American economy, as American pioneers moved west and new farms were established there to feed the growing population centres in the East. In 1869, Case went on to manufacture the first steam engine tractor which, though wheeled-mounted, was drawn by horses and used only to power other machines.

In 1876, Case built the first self-propelled traction steam engine. As steam engines quickly replaced horses for threshing, the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company became the world’s largest producer of steam engines by 1886.

In 1902, five companies merged to form the International Harvester Company in Chicago, the deal being brokered, personally, by J.P. Morgan, the American banker who dominated corporate finance and industrial consolidation at the time. The company produced its first combine harvester in 1915 and in 1923 introduced the Farmall®, the world’s first row-crop tractor. Providing greater productivity, reliability and safety, it was a revolutionary unified system of tractors and implements for plowing, cultivating and harvesting.

International Harvester sold more than five million Farmall tractors and, in 1977, launched the unique single-rotor Axial-Flow® rotary combine, which revolutionised the farming industry with its simplicity, grain quality, grain savings, crop adaptability, matched capacity and high resale value.

French agribusiness giant arrives

French agricultural company Timac Agro Australia has announced it will establish its Australian base in Caulfield, Victoria – creating 30 new jobs.

With a presence in every continent, Timac Agro is now established in 42 countries worldwide and provides agricultural solutions to 17,250 farmers and breeders every day.

Timac Agro Australia specialises in plant and animal nutrition, and will bring its world-class expertise in crop nutrition, soil conditioning and fertiliser efficiency to farmers across Australia.

Timac Agro’s International Development Managing Director, Morgane Bourrée, said the company was looking forward to building strong relationships with farming communities throughout the state and country.

New director for GPSA

The Board of Grain Producers SA has appointed Mid North grain grower Adrian McCabe as a director of the organisation.

Adrian grows wheat, canola, beans and durum at Hamley Bridge, where his predecessors were the first settlers. He is a board member of the Southern Durum Growers Association, a member of Fat Farmers and previously a member of the SA Farmers Federation.

Mr McCabe said he wanted to highlight the importance of the grain industry as “a massive contributor” to the state’s economy. “We need to be lobbying for what country SA needs and we need to educate political parties to make change so that they know what our priorities are.”

ANZ grants $275,000 to regional groups ANZ and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) have announced $275,000 in funding to be shared by 26 regional community groups as part of the 20w16 ANZ Seeds of Renewal program.

Since being established in 2002, ANZ’s Seeds of Renewal program, which is administered by the FRRR, has supported education and employment projects to help grow prosperous regional communities. In total, ANZ has now donated more than $4 million to 750 projects.

In 2016, more than 119 groups applied for grants, which ANZ said highlighted the high level of need for education and employment initiatives in the bush.

NEWS Scrutinise seed for 2017 following harvest rains Heavy summer rainfall through parts of the southern cropping region could impact on the viability of grain that growers are planning to retain for sowing in 2017.

Any grain subjected to wetting at harvest is more susceptible to poor germination, low vigour and degradation during storage and handling.

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Southern Regional Panel member Kate Wilson encourages growers to closely scrutinise seed being set aside for planting.

Mrs Wilson, a grain grower and agronomic consultant in Victoria’s Mallee, says it is essential that growers determine whether damage to grain caused by rain at harvest is purely cosmetic or the symptom of a seed-borne disease which will impact on germination.

“To ensure establishment of a healthy crop next season, it is important to pay particular attention to the seed that is being saved for sowing. Proper management of the seed starts at harvest and should continue right through to storage, handling and seeding next year,” Mrs Wilson said.

She said growers should also be aware that some cereal varieties were more susceptible to the effects of late season weather damage. For example, the imidazolinone-tolerant Kord CL Plus wheat is rated as being susceptible to pre-harvest sprouting.

To assist growers in determining whether grain is viable for sowing and what is an appropriate and effective seed management program, the GRDC offers a detailed Retaining Seed fact sheet.

The fact sheet states that the symptoms of seed quality deterioration can range from mild, such as a loose and wrinkled seed coat in some pulses, to more advanced, such as seed staining, fungal mould and visible signs of germination.

Unless canola seed was harvested before any weather damage it should not be retained for sowing due to the vulnerability of canola’s small seed.

Any retained seed should be graded and tested for germination and vigour. Testing for seed-borne disease is also recommended, especially with saved pulse seed.

Other key points contained in the GRDC fact sheet that growers should consider when retaining grain for seed include: While a laboratory seed test should be used to establish the germination percentage of on-farm retained seed before sowing, especially if it has been weather damaged, a simple onfarm germination test can be done in soil. This will give a good indication of emergence and seedling vigour as at germination.

Seed-borne disease generally cannot be identified from visual inspection so requires laboratory testing.

Achieving and maintaining low temperature, humidity and grain moisture content for stored grain is even more critical if grain has been weather damaged. As weather-damaged seed

deteriorates faster than sound seed it should not be stored for more than 12 months.

With many weedy pulse and cereal crops in a wet season, desiccation or crop topping often becomes necessary.

Depending on timing and chemicals used, this could affect seed quality for sowing.

Grain must not be retained for seed when glyphosate has been used in pre-harvest applications.

Seedling emergence can be affected by sowing too deeply, cold or wet soil, some seed dressings and herbicides, and hardsetting soil.

NEWS Bunker down against mouse infestation of stored grain A large amount of grain likely to be left on the ground after harvest of this year’s high-yielding crops could promote a surge in mouse numbers and activity, and storage experts warn that grain stored in bunkers established close to harvested crops could be at risk.

Grain storage specialist for the southern cropping region, Peter Botta, said growers needed to give serious consideration to where they located bunkers, how they were set up and their ongoing management.

“With such big crops this year, more grain is likely to be spilt than usual, even if growers are careful,” says Mr Botta, whose work is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

“We can see that there is potential for a problem with mice – so meticulous attention needs to be given to bunker storages.

“I strongly encourage growers to locate their bunkers as far away as possible from any cropping areas so that the likelihood of mice travelling from crop stubbles to bunkers is reduced.

“And when tarping the bunkers, make sure that all folds and creases are eliminated so that entry points for mice are minimised.”

Mr Botta says if baiting of mice is required, avoidance of grain contamination is critical.

Other general requirements for successful bunker storage include a well-prepared and compacted pad that is sloped to drain water away from the site.

Hay bales should not be used in the construction of bunker walls, according to Mr Botta.

“They might be a cheap alternative for creating walls but they lead to serious issues when treating stored grain insect pests,” he says. “During gassing, the bales act as a safe harbour for insects which then move back into the stored grain after treatment.”

Mr Botta says effective fumigation of grain stored in bunkers is difficult to achieve. Because a bunker can’t be pressure tested for gas tightness, monitoring equipment is required to ensure gas concentration remains at a lethal concentration for the required period of time to kill pests at all life stages.

“Poor fumigations in bunkers leads to resistant insects which are already costing growers and the wider industry more money to control.”

Attention to detail and close, ongoing scrutiny and management of bunker storages is critical, according to Mr Botta.

“Overflow storage is not ideal storage. It’s important to remember that bunkers are a form of temporary storage and therefore grain should be moved into permanent storage as soon as the opportunity becomes available.”

NEWS Smooth sailing for ag in 2017, but keep an eye on horizon: Rabobank Australian agriculture looks positioned for an overall positive 2017, with a new report from Rabobank expecting relatively “smooth sailing ahead” for most commodities, but warning there are “potential storm clouds gathering on the horizon”.

In its flagship annual Agribusiness Outlook, the food and agribusiness banking specialist says “in most regards”, Australia’s agricultural sector is poised for a good year, with factors in its favour including a projected rise in global economic growth and farmgate prices for most livestock and crops expected to come in above their five-year averages.

Report lead author, RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness general manager, Tim Hunt, said other positive factors included high dam levels, neutral climate indicators and strong on-farm confidence.

“Key dam levels are high following a wet 2016, ensuring good supply and lower pricing for irrigation water in most regions,” he said, “while El Niño– Southern Oscillation climate indications are at this stage neutral.

“While on-farm, confidence levels

are strong among producers and their investment intentions are increasing.”

However, the report does qualify the optimistic outlook by noting that the market for grains and oilseeds remains an exception, in particular for wheat.

“Ample global supplies look set to limit any improvement in wheat prices this year, though a large Australian 2016/17 crop has at least partly offset the revenue damage,” Mr Hunt said.

And it’s not all positive news for the sector looking out further, with “some storm clouds gathering on the horizon that will bring at best uncertainty and at worst the prospect of significant turbulence in years to come, in particular on the economic and regulatory fronts”, the Agribusiness Outlook warns.

The start of the Trump presidency brings with it some potential near-term benefit, but considerable uncertainty and concern for the medium-term, the report says.

“There is potential, particularly in 2017, for Australian agriculture to benefit in some regards from the new administration,” according to Mr Hunt.

“Fiscal stimulus, tax cuts and reduced US regulation are likely to underpin solid near-term economic growth in the US – contributing to a strong consumer economy and demand for the agricultural products Australia exports to the US. “These same factors may also contribute to a stronger US dollar in 2017, which improves the competitiveness of our producers against the US in markets where we compete head-to-head.”

But more generally, he says, the new US administration brings with it a “huge degree of uncertainty about what will be implemented, and its impact on the global economy and geopolitics”.

“The TPP in its current form is already dead, taking the incremental gains in market access it included for products like beef, dairy and sugar off the table,” Mr Hunt said.

More broadly, the report says, the policies of the Trump administration may contribute to a rising trend in protectionism already evident in recent years in many parts of the world – from which Australia, as an export-oriented agricultural producer, has much to lose.

NEWS The potential for political tension between the US and China (two of Australia’s largest trading partners) is also high.

Rabobank Australia national manager Country Banking Todd Charteris noted that the Australian food and agri sector would need to work to ensure it managed this period of uncertainty and potential turbulence, as well as it could.

“As the report finds, this will include seeing if anything can be salvaged from the ashes of the TPP and advancing bilateral trade agreements (including positioning for a FTA with the UK when it leaves the EU). And beyond the trade realm, securing partnerships and stable routes to market will be more important than ever,” he said.

“At the very least, Australian agriculture should enter any potential storm in generally good shape. And turbulence can bring opportunities as well as threats.”

The world awash with wheat Rabobank’s latest report states that headwinds remain for global and local wheat markets in 2017, with the continued accumulation of stocks, currently at record highs, and persistent high production expected to keep a lid on potential price improvements.

“Excellent seasonal conditions drove yields to more than offset world acreage cuts in 2016, with stocks building in every major exporting region except the EU. Australia was no exception, and with a wheat crop in excess of 30 million tonnes just harvested, there is an abundance of surplus wheat available,” the report states.

Rabobank forecasts CBOT wheat prices to improve gradually through 2017 to reach an average of USc460/bu in late 2017, or $A225/tonne at a $A/$US exchange rate of 0.75.

With the US recording its lowest winter

wheat seeding in over 100 years, a US deficit is expected in 2017-18, helping to support the forecast modest price improvement through the second half of calendar 2017.

Pressure on very competitive export markets may be relieved slightly in the coming year by a forecast 8% or 4 million tonne reduction in production from the Black Sea region in 2017-18.

Rabobank said the Indian wheat market could be crucial for Australian graingrowers as it has the potential to soak up a significant part of Australia’s record 2016 harvest.

Traditionally, Australia had a strong market share when India needed to import wheat. Four to five million tonnes of Australian wheat was expected to be imported in 2016-17 following a reduction in import duty.

NEWS Green peach aphid confirmed resistant to another insecticide Resistance to neonicotinoid insecticides has for the first time been confirmed in Australian populations of green peach aphid (GPA), a serious broadacre cropping pest.

The discovery means that GPA is known to have resistance to four different chemical mode of action groups – synthetic pyrethroids, carbamates, organophosphates and now, neonicotinoids.

GPA is a widespread pest of canola and a range of pulse crops, causing damage by feeding and transmitting viruses, including Beet Western Yellows Virus which decimated canola crops in parts of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales in 2014. It is also a common pest in horticulture.

Resistance to neonicotinoid insecticides – commonly used in the grains industry in seed treatments – was recently confirmed by scientists involved in research undertaken on behalf of

the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA).

The work has been led by Melbournebased scientific research organisation cesar, in collaboration with researchers at CSIRO. Entomologist Dr Paul Umina, of cesar, says resistance to neonicotinoids has now been confirmed in a number of GPA populations across Australia.

Specimens taken from both canola and vegetable crops tested positive for resistance.

Dr Umina said the discovery – while not unexpected – further limited the opportunities and options for control of GPA and underlined the need for sound management resistance strategies and integrated pest management practices to ensure long-term access to available chemistries.

“Our findings don’t mean that neonicotinoids are dead in the water; they

are still a valuable tool. But the discovery does serve as a reminder that all chemicals are vulnerable to resistance development, particularly when dealing with a species like GPA which is known to have a high propensity to develop insecticide resistance.”

Fortunately, the mechanism underlying neonicotinoid resistance in Australian GPA populations has been identified as metabolic resistance which means that functionally resistance levels are low to moderate. There is another mechanism conferring neonicotinoid resistance in GPA, which leads to a very high level of resistance, and complete field failures.

“In good news, this high-level resistance, which is found overseas, hasn’t been detected in Australia. By adopting resistance management strategies, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of this resistance evolving in Australian GPA.” Dr Umina says Transform®, a sulfoxaflor foliar insecticide, remains an effective means to control GPA in canola crops.

Dr Umina encourages growers to continue to follow the GPA Resistance Management Strategy, available at https:// www.grdc.com.au/GPAResistanceStrategy, which aims to minimise the selection pressure for resistance in GPA. This strategy was developed by the National Insecticide Resistance Management (NIRM) working group of the Grains Pest Advisory Committee, a GRDC-funded project which provides strategic advice to the GRDC on pest issues.

He also urges growers to keep a close eye on this year’s canola crops as they establish.

“If aphids are seen surviving on young canola plants that have been treated with neonicotinoid insecticide seed treatments, growers are urged to contact cesar (phone 03 9349 4723).”

Suspect populations can be tested for resistance relatively quickly using new diagnostic tools.

NEWS Another $213 million for mobile blackspots The Federal Government’s latest round of funding for mobile blackspots will do little to deflect criticism of its lack of action with improving mobile communications in rural and regional areas.

The Government announced just before the end-of-year break $213 million in funding for another 266 mobile base stations under round 2 of the program. The new stations will deliver: • new and upgraded handheld coverage to over 17,700 square kilometres of regional and remote Australia; • new external antenna coverage to over 52,300 square kilometres; and • new mobile coverage to over 1,900 kilometres of major transport routes.

While the headline figure of $213 million looks impressive, almost three quarters of this total was contributed by telcos, state and local governments. The Federal Government is contributing only $57 million, which farm groups claim shows a lack of commitment to arguably the biggest problem facing Australia’s agricultural sector.

Telcos made the biggest contribution to round 2 of the blackspot program, with Telstra investing $63.7 million,

followed by Optus ($36.4 million) and Vodafone ($1.6 million).

State governments also made some significant contributions, led by WA ($21.8 million), Queensland ($13.7 million), New South Wales ($8.3 million), Victoria ($7.9 million), South Australia ($1.5 million) and Tasmania ($0.35 million). An additional $475,000 was provided by local governments, businesses and community organisations.

The first round 2 base stations are expected to roll out this year.

The successful applicants (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone) will release indicative rollout schedules on their websites shortly. These schedules will be regularly updated as the rollout progresses.

The Federal Government has also committed an additional $60 million to a third round of funding, which will cover a number of priority locations. A competitive process to allocate round 3 funding is expected to commence in 2017.

Sale of SkyMuster bandwith slammed NSW Farmers has called on the Federal Government to step in and stop the sale of precious NBN Sky Muster satellite bandwidth to Qantas.

NSW Farmers’ President Derek Schoen said Selling satellite capacity to Qantas was a slap in the face to farmers who could not even get a reliable signal.

“It tells regional Australians loud and clear that they don’t matter, that they are nothing more than an inconvenience.

These satellites are supposed to end the digital divide between rural and urban Australia. Instead, we are just seeing it entrenched.

“Watching cat videos while you are flying doesn’t add to the productivity of the Australian economy. Making sure

that regional Australians have sufficient internet speed to run their businesses does.”

NSW Farmers believes that the Federal Government needs to do more to ensure that regional Australians have access to reliable internet services.

Mr Schoen added that “the court of public opinion is the only accountability that NBN faces.

Unfortunately, outrage doesn’t deliver you a reliable internet service. The issues that have surfaced are yet another example of why we need a new universal service obligation that guarantees minimum standards for voice and data services,” Mr Schoen said.

FARM PROFILE Fisk and family - ‘Redbank’ - Robertson, NSW

Tony Fisk and his brother Peter work hard to maintain the integrity of their land, founded by their father 66 years ago. The original property, ‘Redbank’ named after the area’s red volcanic basalt soil, still stands and has produced some of the finest wheat grain and potatoes in the Bowral district, encouraged by rich fertile soil and plentiful rainfall.

The Fisks are located near Burrawang in Robertson, a secluded and tranquil village a stretch from Bowral, on the beautiful Southern Highlands. About 1800 people inhabit this upwardly mobile area 35 kilometres from the coast. It is also quaintly named The Big Potato, for obvious reasons.

It was previously covered by rainforest, most of which was cleared for farming. The locals call it affectionately, ‘Robbo’. Long gone are the town’s cheese producers, but a 100-year-old butter factory still sits on the Fisk property.

The Fisks have a sister property way out west in Gulargambone, 600 kms from their Robertson interest. “Dad had friends there and just loved the area and would grow peach, potatoes, cattle and wheat. I also had a farm at Gilgandra growing wheat and cattle and involving share farmers,” Tony said.

The Gulargambone paddocks on the central west plains grows wheat and cattle while Tony’s farm went under the gavel more recently. The 140-acre family paddock in Robertson grows beef cattle, still the pride of Tony’s Mum who needs a hand from Tony, who is her carer.

The Fisk farm used to plant peas, beans and potatoes among other vegetables but Tony says, with the

 Tony Fisk and family picking potatoes in Robertson, NSW advent of ‘broadacre’ farming of potatoes like in Gippsland, it is difficult to compete because the local land is very expensive.

“We used to grow chemical-free gourmet potatoes, and my daughter Isabella was able to help out, as part of her training in farm life. Through constant handling of 50kg bags, and loading two hundred of them a day, my hands swelled and many operations later, the impact is still there – but I enjoyed doing it and can’t complain.”

Tony used to employ local girls for the potato production but laments, ‘the land’s worth more than you can farm’. He also chides those who claim a desire to live the idyllic country life, when they are really in Robertson for the capital gain. Tony admits that growing potatoes is hard work, from ‘bagging to trucking’.

Tony is a tall, fit man for 60 and is keen to see his daughter educated

and prospering in her chosen field of law. Isabella works as a graduate legal secretary and wants to be a lawyer with the first tier firm she is with.

“We were brought up on the farm and had a wonderful life. Not many could do it but it is a simple life too and an education in itself,” Tony said.

Tony has no plans for the future, content on assisting his mum, running of the beef cattle, seeing Isabella flourish beyond her 18 years of age, and having a round of golf each week. His pet hobby is carpentry but admits being an amateur. A course in computers will bring him up to speed as he enters a new phase in his life.

You can catch Tony down at the famous Robertson Hotel built in 1924 where it once boasted having ‘telephone lines in every room’. The Hotel, Robertson and the Fisks have come a long way since then but share a common heritage some might think the envy of many.

WHAT'S NEW Yanmar expands range with new single phase models The Yanmar YH series of dieselpowered commercial and industrial three phase generators has been expanded with five new single phase, four pole (1500rpm) models, ideal for a wider range of settings – including residential.

Like their premium quality three phase YH series counterparts, the new single phase four pole YH series generators feature quality, fuel-efficient Yanmar engines manufactured in Japan.

Trelleborg receives innovation award gold medal Trelleborg Wheel Systems has been awarded a gold medal at the 2017 SIMA Innovation Awards at the Paris International Agribusiness Show for its soon-to-launch Variable Inflation Pressure (VIP) system.

The company is a leading global supplier of tyres and complete wheel systems for agricultural and forest machinery, forklift trucks and other materials-handling vehicles.

The VIP system, developed in partnership with leading tractor manufacturer AGCO FENDT, is an autonomous, complete wheel capable of self-adjusting the pressure of a combine harvester’s tyre according to its precise load during operation. This optimises the tyre’s footprint in order to reduce soil compaction.

Trelleborg Wheel Systems R&D Director, Piero Mancinelli, said: “Precision farming technologies are already used cross over 5% of cultivated land, which is projected to reach 20% within the next decade. As a result, driverless machines and robots connected with the Internet of Things (IoT) are fast becoming a reality in modern agriculture, helping farmers to produce more, with less.

“At Trelleborg, we have looked to establish the role of the agricultural tyre in the precision farming and the IoT framework, and have invested significant time and resource to further enhance the potential of these innovative technologies.

“The VIP system does exactly that. It is a smart, intelligent, self-adjustable variable inflation pressure system capable

to determine and adopt the right pressure at the right time, in the right place. Just as precision farming philosophy suggests.”

The VIP system consists of a set of sensors measuring several parameters including load, pressure, temperature along with an electronic central processor controlling a compressor and a valve to adjust the pressure. The VIP system is directly integrated on the tyre rim.

“By determining and adopting the right tyre pressure without manual intervention, farmers can reduce soil compaction over 10%, resulting in a 5% higher crop yield. This can be achieved while allowing full connectivity with the farm network, mainframe as well as VIP App interface and machine fleet,” Mr Mancinelli said.

WHAT'S NEW New windrowers for greater power, control and efficiency Building on years of dedicated service and performance for Australian owners and operators, Case IH has unveiled the WD4 Series self-propelled windrower with industry-leading features.

Making its Australian debut at Case IH’s Red Excellence Tour earlier this year, the WD4 Series windrower comprises three models – the WD1204 with 120hp (90kW), the WD1904 with 190 rated hp (142kW) and 199 max hp (149kW) and the WD2304 with 226 rated hp (168kW) and 235 max hp (179kW).

“Following the success of the WD3, we’re pleased to introduce the new and improved WD4 Series, which lives up to our goal of continually improving our products to meet changing customer demands,” said Tim Slater, Case IH Product Manager for Hay and Harvest.

“The most significant upgrade in the WD4 Series is a redesigned hydraulic system. We’ve incorporated a header hydraulic drive system that uses two pumps to power two separate circuits on the draper headers. One pump is used to power the header knife drive circuit, and

the second powers the circuit for the reel and draper belts.”

This knife drive circuit can require significantly higher operating pressures than the reel or draper drive circuits.

The benefit of splitting the two circuits into a ‘high-pressure circuit’, and a ‘low pressure circuit’ is that there is a reduction in the horsepower demand on the windrower which translates into reduced fuel consumption.

“We’ve paid attention to every detail to ensure the new hydraulics truly provide an improved user experience - from maintaining easy access for servicing and better valve performance and reliability, to mechanical locks that keep control cartridges from loosening when exposed to high pressure over time,” said Tim. Enhanced steering is another improvement to the WD4 Series, with a new hydraulically controlled drive system and rear castor wheels that enable the windrower to turn on itself, almost within its own length.

“We worked with NASCAR specialists, Pratt & Miller Engineering on the design of the steering components, and

angled the rear axle swivel post caster at nine degrees, which allows the unit to respond to forward or reversing motions and quick turns while maintaining straight line stability. Self-propelled windrowers are traditionally extremely responsive to steering wheel input which at times can make them difficult to steer, but with the new hydraulic system we can now incorporate AFS AccuGuide auto steering control down to two centimetre accuracy.”

There are three different heads designed for the windrower – a sickle mower conditioner (in 14ft, 16ft and 18ft widths) for more delicate crops, a disc mower conditioner (in 16ft or 19ft widths) for efficient hay cutting and a draper front (in 25ft, 30ft, 36ft and 40ft widths) for windrowing crops such as canola. All WD4 units now have 1080mm of ground clearance under the tractor unit, allowing the operator to drive over swaths more easily without disturbing the formed swath. They also incorporate a powered lowering function which aids in the process of changing heads over.

WHAT'S NEW Fire pump ‘heart transplant’ saves time and money Servicing tired or leaking fire pumps can be a slow and costly exercise for dealers. For customers it is not only inconvenient, but can leave their property unprotected during a period of extreme bushfire danger.

Aussie Pumps understands the implications of a fire pump that’s down. Their response has been to launch a new “Pump Heart Transplant” initiative. It’s aimed at cutting service times and ensuring that pumps are back on duty as quickly as possible.

“Fire pumps that leak or don’t prime can fail during a bushfire emergency endangering lives and property,” said Aussie Pumps Spares Manager Mal Patel.

“Our ‘Heart Transplant Kit’ enables dealers to change out the pump while reusing the existing engine. Fitting a new pump wet end is often quicker

than refurbishing an old pump. It eliminates troubleshooting, ordering pump spares and waiting for their delivery,” he said.

Mal Patel, nicknamed ‘Dr Mal’ by the team at Aussie, has put together a simple guide to replacing a fire pump.

He stresses that the key is to determine the diameter of the engine shaft.

For example the Aussie Fire Chief is usually fitted to a Honda GX160 5.5HP engine with a ¾” shaft. Other brands may use a 5/8th” or ¾” shaft engine.

“We offer fire pump kits that fit both these options as well as one inch shafts so any brand of pump can be substituted with an Aussie. If the engine is still good, then changing over the pump means customers get Aussie’s exceptional performance and unique five year warranty,” he said.

WHAT'S NEW A CLAAS solution to lack of mobile coverage Graingrowers battling poor telecommunications coverage can still take advantage of modern auto-steering features thanks to a new product release from CLAAS. CLAAS has released a mobile Real Time Kinematic (RTK) base station that provides high accuracy for automatic steering systems in any location, however remote.

CLAAS Harvest Centre Product Manager – Precision Farming, Travis Ryan-Salter, said RTK FIELD BASE was ideal for use in regions that were unserviced by a RTK base station network or have poor mobile phone coverage.

“Automatic steering systems are now standard equipment in largescale cropping operations. Real Time Kinematic (RTK) navigation improves the accuracy of GPS systems by correcting the signal against a known base point.

However, many regions still do not have

access to a reliable RTK signal. CLAAS’ RTK FIELD BASE can be used anywhere where a correction signal reception is weak or non-existent.”

The unit utilises a dual-frequency GPS and GLONASS receiver to achieve an accuracy of two to three centimetres.

“The quality of the correction signal can easily compete with that of stationary transmitters,” easily compete with that of stationary transmitters,” Mr Ryan-Salter said.

“Depending on the topography, the system can achieve a reliable signal range of between three and five kilometres. An even greater range can be achieved through the use of external radio technology if permitted by statutory regulations.”

Mr Ryan-Salter says the unit’s tripod assembly and compact dimensions make it very easy to transport and set up.

“RTK FIELD BASE is ready to use

within a few minutes, so there is no great loss of time when changing paddocks or properties.”

The unit is also ideal for agricultural contractors during seeding, spraying or harvesting operations.

The signal can be used by an unlimited number of machines within its range without any licensing fees for transmission being incurred.

The correction signal is supplied in a range of formats, which allows seamless integration for customers with mixed fleets.

TRACTORS & ACCESSORIES Hypro found markets in 32 countries via Elmia Wood AFTER AN accident in the forest, Tommy Karlsson had the time to create something that would reduce the risk of future accidents: a hydraulic processor for tractors. Now known as Hypro, the product is available in 32 countries.

Karlsson developed the tractor processor for his own needs and it was finished by 1984. The company that supplied the hydraulics felt the result was so professional that it should be exhibited at a forestry fair. An expert was brought in to assess the functioning and market potential.

“He said the market was basically saturated and told me that I could sell maybe a dozen of my processors locally,” Tommy remembers.

In 1987 he and his wife, Elisabeth, exhibited the only example of the processor at Elmia Wood. By then the product and company had gained a name: Hypro. Many people were interested and the forest owners at the fair saw what the expert had missed.

Competing processors were mechanical but this one was hydraulic and therefore lighter and easier to manoeuvre.

“We sold the first processor at the fair but in the weeks after we got home, 15 prospective customers visited us for a demonstration and 14 made a purchase,” Elisabeth says.

However, only one processor existed – the prototype. With the help of suppliers, the customers got their machines but the orders kept pouring in.

“Elmia Wood’s fair manager at the time moved back home to Germany and asked us if he could sell our processors,” Tommy adds. “Within a couple of years we had supplied 75 machines. That success then rippled out to markets in the UK and other countries.”

Opened the door to Latin America The next export boost came in the mid1990s, also at Elmia Wood. Into Hypro’s stand stepped a Portuguese man, who suggested that the Swedish company should send a processor to Portugal for demonstrations in a eucalyptus plantation. Tommy went along as the operator.

“The debranching wasn’t going so well so I backed up the trunk. Then the bark came off. The spectators all began talking

at once. When I asked my host what was happening, I was told that no one had succeeded before in mechanically debarking eucalyptus so effectively.”

That success in Portugal opened the door to Latin America. Chile is a growing market and Tommy has been there a number of times. On one occasion he visited a village far out in the countryside.

“They only knew three things about Sweden. Our country is on the other side of the world, Elmia Wood and Hypro,” Tommy says.

The export route has continued to go via Elmia Wood. Forestry professionals come here from around the world, and using the fair as a starting point, Hypro is supplying more and more countries. They now number 32 and stretch from Thailand to Canada. Many diverse types of wood are handled with the Hypro processor. In addition to the various Nordic coniferous species, the most common are eucalyptus, acacia, Monterey pine and Douglas fir.

Lönsboda is still the centre Hypro still has its head office in Lönsboda, Skåne and its Swedish customers remain important. The product range has expanded to include five processes in varying sizes, with or without a crane, energy-wood felling grapple, felling grapple and forwarder trailer. The company has a number of suppliers but all the products go through Lönsboda for inspection and testing.

Because everything must work properly and last a long time.

“We sell machines, not spare parts,” explains the next generation of the Karlsson family, son Linus, who has joined the company together with his brother Daniel.

Hypro has exhibited at all editions of Elmia Wood since 1987 and will be there again on 7–10 June 2017. Or, to be more accurate, will most particularly be there then. Because in 2017 Hypro is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

probably just before Christmas I’ll be using it quite a lot, right through until I start turning cows out towards the end of March, and then I’ll keep feeding until the weather breaks and then pull back a bit.”

PRE SEEDING Seeding upgrade improves crops at Mannum INVESTING in a new sowing rig has improved the timeliness and productivity of the Bormann’s cropping operation near Mannum in South Australia, while pushing their program a little harder and feeding crops more has also helped them collect a couple of local awards along the way.

Adrian Bormann and his wife, May, farm 1800 hectares, including leased and share-farmed land, at Sanderston, about 20 kilometres north-west of Mannum.

They grow wheat and barley predominantly, as well as vetch for hay, supplying local market demand, and they grew manola for the first time last year.

The Bormanns also run a small Merino and crossbred ewe flock and sow down vetch and oats for grazing.

“It can depend on the season whether we graze it, cut it for hay and/or harvest it,’’ Adrian said.

The property comprises loam over clay and sandy loam over clay through to deep white sands and sand over limestone soils.

Adrian said they previously had the proverbial “road train’’ to sow their crops, comprising a Horwood Bagshaw 10.5-metre Scaribar, 4000-litre cart, which they converted to 5000L, and tow-behind liquid fertiliser cart, which required an upgrade to a New Holland T8 420 front-wheel-assist tractor.

However, for the past two seasons a Morris 15.3m C2 Contour drill and 9365 tow-between cart, which includes a 5000L liquid tank, has done the job.

Tyne spacings also changed from 26.25 centimetres (10.5 inches) with a Stiletto boot on the Horwood Bagshaw to 30cm (12in) with a RootBoot system for paired-row sowing on the Morris.

“Sowing on the shoulder and having the following press wheel is working well,’’ Adrian said.

“It’s a double shoot system that separates the seed and fertiliser and we are running liquid trace elements as well.’’

He said the new rig had improved the timeliness of sowing, as they could now cover 60ha before refilling, compared with 25ha previously.

“We share-farm a lot of smaller paddocks and this means we don’t always have to shift a lot of filling equipment. We can do them in one fill.’’

The Bormanns purchased the Morris rig through local dealer, WD Lewis at Karoonda, which also had provided excellent service and support for the machine and other equipment on the farm.

Adrian said he was still “learning’’ with the machine, but depth control and placement was good and had resulted in good germination and establishment.

“We are also learning what we can do in-furrow with liquids, including

flutriafol in furrow. Zinc is also important here and is doing well.’’

“Our soils are very variable and it is our hope that, with improved inputs, we can narrow the variability. We have done some variable rate sowing to help with the changing soil types as we seed.

This is something we never would have been able to do before.

“Summer spraying is also allowing us to capture summer rainfall better and we are getting on top of grasses.’’

Located in a 325-millimetre rainfall region, a good start to the season in 2015 and growing crops on vetch stubble enabled the Bormanns to take out the local Murray Plains crop competition with a 3.9 tonne/ha Mace wheat crop and a 1.6t/ha 44Y89 Clearfield hybrid canola crop.

“Vetch is becoming a key crop in our rotation,’’ Adrian said.

IRRIGATION Overhead irrigation changing cotton practices Cotton growers in Australia are changing the way they farm, after years of drought forced a rethink of water management practices.

Furrow irrigation has long been the hero of the cotton industry but now increasing numbers of growers are turning to overhead sprinkler irrigation to give them more flexibility over where and how to use their water allocations.

Tom Quigley is among those who now grow cotton under an overhead sprinkler system. Along with his parents and brothers, Tom runs “Muntham”, a mixed irrigation and dryland farming and livestock operation at Trangie, in Central West NSW. The catalyst for Muntham to make the change was the significant government incentives to invest in more water-efficient farm infrastructure, in exchange for water entitlements under the 2007 MurrayDarling Basin plan.

“We’d been through a long drought and hadn’t had a lot of water, so we wanted an ability to grow any crop into the future, with a wide range of water allocations,” says Tom.

But the crux of it is, you can’t grow it the same way as you grow a furrow irrigated cotton crop. You have to treat them as two entirely different crops.

But with cotton having been grown under furrow irrigation almost exclusively since the 1960s, they faced the question of whether they could continue to grow cotton under their new Valley Central Pivot and Lateral Move irrigators.

Tom won a $30,000 cotton-industry sponsored Nuffield Scholarship to research the possibilities, taking him to the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Israel, England and New Zealand over four months.

“The idea wasn’t to go and look at just cotton farms overseas, I wanted to meet farmers who have been growing crops under overhead sprinkler irrigation for a long period of time to accelerate our learning,” explains Tom. Armed with his new knowledge, the family began experimenting on their own cotton crops and discovered they could obtain great yields using less water, but it needed a whole new way of thinking.

Tom said there was a strong belief in the cotton industry that overhead irrigation machines could not keep up with the demand of the cotton crop.

“But the crux of it is, you can’t grow it the same way as you grow a furrow irrigated cotton crop. You have to treat them as two entirely different crops.”

He found growing cotton on the flat as opposed to the traditional raised beds of furrow irrigation was important because it reduced runoff and waterlogging. Ground cover, strip tilling and machine upkeep are some of the other key changes Tom identified as necessary.

He says ground cover, such as retained stubble or a cover crop will reduce evaporation, retain soil moisture and help wet the seedbed evenly during early germination - all crucial for high yields and water use efficiency.

While Tom doesn’t recommend cotton farmers switch their entire farm to overhead irrigation, his own experience has found it brings notable advantages.

Muntham has been able to improve its water use and noticed a 10% increase in their yields. The property is now regularly achieving two bales per megalitre of water applied.

IRRIGATION Smart irrigation set for big future in parched Australia Smart irrigation is set to become far more widely adopted in Australia, and not just because our dry climate makes it such a necessity.

The use of automated, intelligent irrigation systems is about to breakthrough into the mainstream thanks to a nationwide research project, known as Smarter Irrigation for Profit.

The project is being conducted by the Cotton Research and Development Corporation in conjunction with Dairy Australia, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and other partners including the CSIRO. The project is comprised of three parts: scheduling technologies; precise, low-cost control systems; and, a network of farmermanaged learning sites in major regions that will showcase just how much can be achieved with smart irrigation.

The expected outcomes of the project are

an improvement in water efficiency and farmer profitability of between 10% and 20%, and vastly increased adoption of new irrigation technologies.

The scheduling technologies component of the project is creating an irrigation system that earlier generations could only dream about. The end goal is to have an irrigation system that uses satellite imagery and recent and forecast weather data to automatically determine how much irrigation is required and exactly where the water is needed. Recent activities include the selection of dairy farm demonstration sites in southeast Australia and the design and build of the new system on a number of pilot farms.

The second component of the project involves the development and field testing of smart, automated systems that can irrigate with precise amounts of water.

Field testing will be implemented at

one centre pivot irrigated pasture site in Tasmania, one furrow irrigated cotton field near Wee Waa, NSW, one lateral move cotton site in Dalby, Queensland and one furrow irrigated sugar site in the Burdekin, Queensland.

Rex Tout’s Loomberah property “Limestone Park”, is part of the national project, which trials and measures farm profitability through increase increased water, energy and labour efficiency.

Mr Tout, who milks 130 cows, is nine months into the project and hopes to improve on-farm operations to increase his profit per cow.

Among the ideas he’d like to explore are soil moisture monitoring to develop a more informed irrigation schedule, the potential use of solar in dairy operations, on-farm water storage, and how fertigation – fertilising while irrigating – can make a dairy more efficient.

IRRIGATION $30m in grants for NSW irrigators NSW irrigators can now apply for a share of $30 million in government grants to upgrade on-farm water infrastructure.

The newly announced funding is part of the $111 million Sustaining the Basin program in NSW. More than 32 GL of water has been saved in previous rounds, with 10 GL retained by irrigators to boost on farm productivity.

Northern NSW irrigators can apply for a share in about $30 million to upgrade on-farm infrastructure.

Announcing the new funding, deputy prime minister and minister for agriculture and water resources, Barnaby Joyce, said it was “vitally important we don’t take any more water out of Basin communities than is absolutely necessary to secure the long-term health of the system.”

“That is why the Coalition Government is focused on investment in infrastructure, not buybacks, to secure water savings across the Murray–Darling Basin.

“Whether it’s building Chaffey Dam or irrigation upgrades, this is real delivery. This government has committed more than $8 billion in water infrastructure across the Basin, the most significant investment in water infrastructure in Australian history.

“Infrastructure upgrades deliver real benefits for irrigators, including greater flexibility in crop choice, improved operational efficiencies, increased yields and enhanced water efficiency.

“Through this program we are recovering non-productive water and sharing that recovered water between

the environment and irrigators,” Mr Joyce said.

All irrigators with eligible entitlements from the Lower Namoi and Border Rivers catchments can apply.

In addition, irrigators with eligible entitlements in the NSW Border Rivers, Gwydir, Namoi/Peel, Macquarie/Cudgegong and Barwon/ Darling water management can apply for Irrigated Farm Water Use Efficiency Assessment (IFWUEA) funding to assist with infrastructure planning. ​Applications are open until 30 June 2017.
