FRO M THE EDI T O R IT has been quite a momentous few months for the Australian machinery industry and, given we are on the cusp of spring, focus will soon turn to the paddock as the broadacre crop season swings into its ‘make or break’ period.

Winter certainly hasn’t been dull, with plenty of industry news culminating in The Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia’s annual conference in Melbourne in July.

The conference shone a light on recent sales figures, with promising signs across most machinery categories and the ever-increasing presence of ‘lifestyle farmer’ purchases playing an important role for dealerships’ overall business.

Australian tractor sales, which are seen by the industry as the barometer for the entire machinery sector, rose by one per cent in the 2014-2015 financial year and recorded a total value of $516m.

Conversely, the sales of combine harvester dropped by 12pc, while haymaking equipment was down 8pc.

It was noted that below-par seasons in key regions such as Victoria’s Wimmera and Mallee regions would likely continue to take some heat out of machinery sales in the lead-up to this summer’s harvest.

districts in south-eastern Australia, including SA’s wheatbelt, have received more than adequate rain through autumn and the start of winter. A decent spring, as ever, will be the difference for many farmers, rural merchandisers and dealerships between an excellent year and less than satisfactory business results.

The weaker Australian dollar is having its usual mix of positive and negative impacts on farmers who always enjoy producing export commodities when the exchange rate is favourable, but have to endure a higher price of imported machinery, chemical and fertiliser.

Machinery that is increasingly reliant on automated technology continues to be topical in research and marketing circles. As discussed in this edition on pages 14 and 19, increased automation and advanced robotics in agricultural machinery will be commonplace before too long.

Given the adoption of robotic technology in the meat processing and dairy industries, some might say the uptake of such innovations in the broadacre sector is overdue. Regardless, the ability to boost efficiency and productivity is a tantalising prospect for any primary producer and we will ‘watch this space’ with tremendous interest.

NEWS National machinery sale trends buoyant in 2014/2015 AUSTRALIAN tractor sales continue to increase, recording a one per cent increase for the financial year ending 30 June 2015 to $516 million in value, according Alan Kirsten of Agriview.

However sales of combine harvesters fell 12pc to $38.4m and haymaking equipment was down 8pc to $9.0m.

Agriview’s report, which also provides trends of future sales of farm machinery, was delivered at the recent annual conference of the Tractor and Machinery Association (TMA) in Melbourne to over 175 members and industry stakeholders.

Mr Kirstin was upbeat about the industry’s sales and dealership prospects.

“Our market is strong, has been strong, and looks like being good going forward,” he said.

Tractor sales came in at 5451 units for 2015 compared with 4985 in 2014.

The five year sales average was up 5pc.

Around the country South Australia achieved the maximum tractor sales increase of 17pc, followed by Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland at 16pc, and Western Australia 1pc. Victoria was down 1pc and Northern Territory down 5pc.

“Regionally some areas have been affected by drought, for example the Victorian Wimmera. However overall drought and commodity prices are not having an influence on the market”, he said.

Tractor sales to hobby framers and the horticultural sector remained strong; the five year average sales of all units indicated most states were up between 5-7pc.

Mr Kirsten said that combine harvesters sales were down but dealers are bringing back values of traded combines.

“This is leading to not having a glut of second hand combiners,” he said.

previous years Mr Kirsten commented that the 2015 hay market looked positive. Sales of windrowers were stable; spraying equipment was very strong but airseeder and tillage equipment sales were lagging.

On machinery outlets, numbers were static at 681 after reductions in recent years. Groups comprised 535 outlets in the market and 97 group businesses operated 359 outlets. Mr Kirsten said the industry could not afford to see any less dealers and it needed more groups to invest.

On future prospects, Mr Kirsten said that while many dealers could not read what is going to happen, he expected the sale trends to continue and this was confirmeded by ABARE reports.

“It is a strong viable industry, and with upside. For those dealers who want to sell I would be working on it right now“, he said.

“Today when we look at the soft commodities the outlook remains positive, agricultural production is at a record high and projected to grow further by the end of the decade according to ABARE. Australia’s farming sector continues to re-structure and is adapting to new market conditions both locally and overseas. Export demand for Australia’s soft commodities is at an all-time high.”

Mr Kirsten encouraged machinery industry stakeholders to look at the matching the structure of their businesses to best meeting the needs of a very different industry and very different customer base.

“We continue to been blessed with very stable market conditions. Yes, we have had the usual droughts, the exchange rate continues to trend downwards but interest rates are at historical levels and inflation is in check, so it couldn’t be a better time to invest and I think that is just what is happening.”

NEWS Tracking 2014 tractor sales A TOTAL of 10,405 tractors were retailed in 2014 which was 1.4pc down on the 10,558 sold in 2013; and the fourth continuous year where the market exceeded 10,000 units. The last time the market produced continuous 10,000 plus market results was between 1979 and 1985 when the market averaged just under 13,700 sales per year.

Tractor sales are generally associated with agriculture use but for many years now the influence of the hobby farmer or ‘lifestyle farmer’ has been harder and harder to overlook. Demand for product in this sector has been steadily rising.

Historically this market was defined by tractors under 40Hp but today one could argue that due to the larger lifestyle blocks that this market now extends to 50Hp. The tractor market falls into two distinct markets, one lifestyle which covers tractors up to 50 engine horsepower the other agricultural which covers tractors above 50 horsepower.

In 2014, the lifestyle tractor market accounted for 32pc of the total industry with 3358 units sold, which was slightly down on 2013’s result but still maintained the same share of the overall market.

The importance of the lifestyle market cannot be understated given its weight in the market place.

The 50Hp-plus market in 2014 totalled 7047 units or 68pc of the market, this result was slightly down on the average of 7043 over the last five years.

The under 50Hp lifestyle market segment continues to be the largest segment but did weaken slightly in 2014 with 3358 sales, down 8pc on the previous year. Despite the drop in sales 2014 was still 2pc up on the average of the previous five years.

Total value of sales in 2014 was just over $65.2 million.

The 50-100Hp utility tractor market slowed again in 2014 with 2889 tractors sold, which was 6pc down on the 2995 units sold in 2013 and 12pc down on the average of the previous five years.

Total value of sales for the segment reached $145.7 million.

The 100-200Hp row crop market segment rebounded in 2014 with 2597 units sold; a rise of 5pc on the 2473 sold in 2013 and the best result for the segment since 2009, when just under 3200 tractors were sold.

All up the value of sales for this

segment totalled $298.5 million in 2014.

Demand in the over-200Hp broadacre market segment slowed further in 2014 recording a 7pc decline in sales. All up there were 1551 tractors sold, 112 fewer than in 2013 and 105 fewer than the average of the previous five years.

In value of sales terms just over $461 million dollars was spent in this segment in 2014.

NEWS TMA conference a forum for industry change THE keynote address by National Farmers Federation’s CEO Simon Talbot on ‘Transforming Australian Agriculture', set the scene for the Tractor and Farm Machinery Association (TMA) annual conference, held in Melbourne in July.

Talbot told members and guests that agriculture was in a good place, and that current record Australian primary production for 2014-15 will continue in the next financial year, estimated at $54 billion. He predicted this would increase to $100 billion by 2030 with horticulture tipped to be the big winner.

Mr Talbot identified challenges that needed solutions including the industry having 34 different voices representing it, the need to double entrants of qualified workers, digital enablement and web access, professional branding and adequate capital.

“In the next 50 years the industry will need an injection of $1.5 trillion in capital, which will be foreign investment. But this must be on our terms”, he said “The industry must improve yields while reducing costs and traceability of agricultural products will be the key to food security.

“The NFF is working to get farmers connected to the web, to be a strong united voice, and using the brand ‘True Aussie’ to sell product. This is being used as a target trial for our beef in China.”

These sentiments were echoed by other speakers including Westpac economist Justin Smirk who stressed China’s need for protein, thus changing their imports emphasis from resources to food.

Mr Smirk said that global and Australian farmer age levels are rising, the lower Australian dollar was delivering more competitive export priced, and the loss of over 100,000 workers from the industry requires their replacement with high value workers for increased technical farming applications.

“Agriculture represents 3 per cent of the economy but only 1.35pc of super fund investments are allocated to agriculture,” Mr Smirk said.

Paul Darcy, director sales for AGCO and TMA board member, stressed the need for greater investment in precision farming.

“In 35 years we will need to produce more food than we have in the last 8000 years,” he said.

“Arable land is disappearing and land values are increasing so this will require expediential growth in mechanical innovation to respond.”

Mr Darcy said that all tractor manufacturers are spending big on research and development. Many tractors are engineered on similar platforms and they are getting better and cheaper on lower manufacturer margins. Service and support will be the point of difference with implications for dealer strategies.

Auto guidance is now standard and will continue to improve. With increased minable tillage, sprayers, air seeders and individual distributor heads are areas for increased innovation.

Darren Keating, representing the Australian Fodder Industry Association, discussed regional stocks of fodder and export market opportunities for hay, particularly into Asia.

Other conference presenters included producers and investor farm managers discussing their property management strategies and practices.

CURRENCY AND MARKETS Dollar forecast revised down, US71 cents tipped FORECASTS for the Australian dollar have been revised down, with the AUD now tipped to fall to 72 US cents by the end of 2015 and bottoming out at 71 US cents in early 2016.

Speaking in late July, NAB agribusiness general manager Khan Horne said the disruption in Greece and weaker Chinese equity markets had contributed to the resumption in the downward trajectory of the AUD. “The weaker currency is providing important support to local prices and we expect it will continue to weaken through until early next year, which is good news for our export oriented industries,” Mr Horne said.

NAB has adjusted its 2015-16 price forecasts in light of the revised AUD forecast, with upward revisions to wheat, sugar and cotton prices.

NAB’s average price outlook for wheat is 5.9 per cent higher than last year at AUD 306.24 a tonne (up from 3.4pc), cotton is up 12pc to AUD 2125.20/t (up from 9.3pc) and sugar has improved from 3.8pc decline to 1.4pc decline, to sit at AUD 378.24/t.

“On interest rates, we still see the Reserve Bank as having finished cutting. We see the next move in rates as up but not until late 2016, and with a lower end point for the official cash

 NAB’s Khan Horne is expecting a weaker Australian dollar in the coming months. rate of 3.5pc,” Mr Horne said. “The NAB Rural Commodities Index was steady in June – up 0.2 per cent in AUD terms but down 0.9 per cent in USD terms. The neutral result in AUD terms largely reflects higher grain and protein prices offset by sharply lower fruit, vegetable and to a lesser degree sugar prices.”

Mr Horne said NAB welcomed the announcement by Federal Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce on the opening of the live cattle trade to China.

“This deal has the potential to provide

unprecedented support to the beef industry and inject real investment into the sector,” he said.

NAB’s Rural Commodities Index reports on 28 commodities including wheat, barley, rice, canola, wool, cotton, sugar, wine grapes, beef, lamb and dairy. The index is weighted annually according to the gross value of production of each industry in Australia.

Rabobank tips global dairy bounce in quarterly update A RECOVERY in global dairy prices is still on the horizon, however burgeoning stocks have pushed out any sustained upturn in the market until the first-half of 2016, according to Rabobank’s latest Dairy Quarterly report.

The global outlook, released by Rabobank in June, reaffirms the bank’s position that a recovery phase is imminent, however it has pushed out the timeframe by at least three months.

Rabobank senior dairy analyst Michael Harvey says the market correction has been largely delayed by the removal of EU quotas which has bolstered exportable supplies.

“We are currently operating in an environment where global milk production is rising faster than demand growth, and there is simply too much milk in the market,” he said.

“While global milk production is set to continue to increase, the rate of growth is expected to slow particularly out of New Zealand and the US, while an improvement in demand should see some rebalancing in the market by early next year.”

Australian farmers have been largely buffered from the weakness in international dairy markets, with the farmgate price for southern export producers maintained at $6.00/kg for milksolids for the 2014/15 season.

Mr Harvey says next season’s milk price is expected to remain in the same vicinity, which will certainly encourage ongoing investment in the sector.

“Southern producers have generally had a profitable year, which has been bolstered by manageable feed and fertiliser costs and low interest rates,” he said.

NEWS BRIEFS White Paper welcomed: The Federal Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, launched in July, contains a host of valuable initiatives to boost the profitability and competitiveness of the Australian farm sector, according to the National Farmers Federation. NFF president Brent Finlay said the White Paper looks to create a stronger business environment for farmers and generate better farm gate returns. “We finally have a clear commitment from government to foster a stronger, more prosperous and vibrant agriculture sector,” Mr Finlay said.

Production value increase tipped: The latest ABARES Agricultural Commodities report forecasts a 3.1 per cent increase in the gross value of farm production to around $53.7 billion in 2015–16.

ABARES Executive Director, Karen Schneider, said the forecast increase in the gross value of farm production in 2015-16 mainly reflects an expected rise of 5.2 per cent in the gross value of livestock production to $27.2 billion in 2015–16. “The gross value of crop production is forecast to increase in 2015–16 by 0.9pc to $26.5 billion in 2015–16,” she said. Schoen leads NSW Farmers: COROWA mixed farmer Derek Schoen will lead NSW Farmers Association for the next 12 months following his election as president at the NSW Farmers’ Annual conference. Mr Schoen was the association’s vice president in 2014-15 and is well known as its Cattle Committee Chair for the past three years. He succeeds Fiona Simson from the Liverpool Plains who stepped down today after completing a maximum four year term.

NEWS Farm tax depreciation initiative welcomed THE National Farmers’ Federation has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement on bringing forward introduction of accelerated depreciation of fodder, fencing and water assets to the night of the Federal Budget, which was handed-down on May 12.

It is expected that the measures will not only provide a benefit for farmers, who can now claim the expense deductions, but also for the many rural industries across Australia which support the construction of the fences, water infrastructure and storage facilities.

The NFF said the Federal Government responded quickly to the feedback received.

“The decision to bring the commencement date forward will be welcome news for farmers and small businesses across the country particularly those struggling with drought or preparing for El Niño conditions forecast for Eastern Australia,” the NFF said in a media statement.

“We acknowledge advocacy by the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, championing these changes.”

Mr Joyce also welcomed the passage of the tax depreciation measures for farmers, which were announced as part of this year’s budget.

The accelerated depreciation measures for all primary producers regardless of turnover will see immediate write-off for new fencing and water infrastructure, and write-off over three years for fodder storage. The measure is ongoing with no expiry date.

“These accelerated depreciation measures are policies originating from our Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, and the measures will encourage Australian farmers, regardless of the size of their farm enterprise, to invest in their businesses to better prepare for drought and improve their productivity,” Mr Joyce said.

Minister Joyce said that the Federal Government had listened to Australian farmers and clearly understood what was needed to strengthen and grow their farming enterprises, and to help build the soft-commodity sector that will deliver the jobs and prosperity for the future.

“As a result of these measures, farmers will now have more confidence to make the necessary investments in their farm businesses. It means more incentive to either build the water infrastructure they need, or to better manage their land through new fencing or to have the ability to store more fodder in case of drought,” he said.

“Accelerated depreciation measures will also encourage farmers to invest in drought preparedness when they are in a financial position to do so.”

The accelerated depreciation measures for primary producers is in addition and separate to the instant write-off for purchases up to $20,000 for all Australian small businesses with a turnover of less than $2 million a year, and which operates for the current and the next financial years only.

NEWS Nuffield Scholar searches for cheaper machinery WITH most Australian farmers relying on the traditional method of buying machinery from the local dealer, grain farmer Paul Green believes there is a better way to do business.

The farmer from Hyden in WA used his Nuffield Scholarship to investigate the economics of machinery manufacturing to consider out how Australian farmers might get a better deal.

Mr Green travelled around the world to see how some of the factories that produce the machinery his family uses on their property in the WA’s eastern wheatbelt.

“Essentially the price of machinery drove me to study this topic, trying to understand whether the price signals are correct that farmers have to pay,” he said.

“Following on from that, I wanted to try and find ways to get more viable costings for machinery for producers in our area.”

As part of his study, he participated in the Nuffield program’s six-week Global Focus Program group trip before he focussed on his individual research with a 10-week travel period. North America was an obvious starting point for Mr Green.

“I spent quite a bit of time in the US and Canada because that’s where the majority of the equipment is sourced for broadacre grain production in Western Australia, so they’re the main competitors in any manufacturing industry,” Mr Green said.

“I then went to Europe and had a look particularly in Italy at their manufacturing enterprises before finishing with a quick tour through south-east Asia to get an understanding of how factories operate in low-cost economies.”

With such an extensive travel program, Mr Green quickly found some major differences with the Australian marketplace.

has studied the economics of machinery manufacturing.

“Certainly labour remuneration was number one, while currency valuations, taxation and government incentives were the other standouts, but they do need to be put into perspective,” he said.

For example, Australia has a 17 per cent higher wage rate than North America, but if a product only has a small wage per cent as its total build cost, then that 17pc can easily be negated by a more favourable tax regime or a slight movement in currency.

Mr Green said another major hurdle for local farmers is that Australia’s smaller population doesn’t allow for a large number of machinery dealers, impacting on the price that primary producers pay.

“An average-sized town in the US midwest may well have three John Deere dealers with three separate owners all vying for your business, while here, particularly in WA, you’ll have one machinery dealer with seven or eight outlets essentially covering a third of the state,” he said.

“We just don’t have that competition between dealers, and so my Nuffield scholarship was all about trying to get some more manufacturing locally to allow a bit more competition and choice of product for the local farmers.”

Mr Green said there are three ways primary producers acquire machinery; the traditional approach of buying through local manufacturers and dealers, direct importing or custom builds – essentially farmers building machines themselves.

He believes Australia can compete in the custom-build space if farmers are smart about the type of products they make.

“We need to focus on large, oversized machinery where there’s transport issues and technically advanced equipment that we can develop locally for our own individual use,” he said.

“There are some products and components that are best suited to being mass-produced in the low-cost economies of Asia. We need to accept that and just import those and become more of an assembly line here in Australia for the products we require.”

Paul is hopeful moving forward that custom building can help overcome a declining population in rural Australia to bring more competition to machinery acquisition.

“If we look back on the last 10 to 20 years, the population has decreased so dramatically and the size of the farms are expanding at a rapid rate,” he said.

“It all comes back to being smart about what we want to build, but I certainly hope there’s going to be more competition for the farmers primarily from custom building, because there’s just not going to be the population around to sustain a fully-fledged industry.”

NEWS Technology presents opportunities, challenges AUSTRALIAN grain growers are widely regarded as being innovative and open to change. So anything that might provide a competitive edge, or a measure of certainty, is likely to pique curiosity.

Nowhere has this been more obviously borne out than in the rapid adoption of autosteer.

However, the next generation of precision agriculture (PA) technology – variable-rate technology (VRT) – has not caught on so widely or quickly for several reasons, among them being the newness of the technology, perceived cost and complexity and, in some districts, a lack of soil variability in paddocks.

But Dr Rick Llewellyn from the CSIRO believes that effectively targeted adoption strategies would improve overall uptake of VRT. “There’s potential for accelerated adoption where there is variability that can be managed profitably and growers can receive advisory support for the technology and the information it generates,” Dr Llewellyn said “Australian grain growers are willing adopters of new technology (as seen in Figure 1), but the more successful innovations will be those that don’t add complexity and those that can help growers manage large areas with less management demands.”

Beyond VRT, proponents of increasing PA adoption are now looking one step further, to full automation.

Dr Rohan Rainbow, from Crop Protection Australia, is a consultant manager to the GRDC on automation and robotics.

Presenting at the University of Sydney Summer School on Agricultural Robotics earlier this year, Dr Rainbow pointed out how factors such as crop breeding, quality and yield traits, chemical and biological crop protection, GM crop science, and no-till, autosteer and controlled traffic have all delivered gains for growers over the past decade.

This leads to the question of whether, with an increase in automation technology, we need the driver in the tractor at all.

“Autosteer already has been fantastic for growers. It has made farming easier and the financial benefits are clear,” Dr Rainbow said.

Dr Llewellyn and his colleague Jackie Ouzman have recently completed a study of adoption of PA-related practices covering major Australian grain-growing regions.

Dr Llewellyn says that relative to the other innovations, autosteer is a simple innovation that is not informationintensive and not highly influenced by farm characteristics such as soil type.

However, on-farm labour remains an issue, Dr Rainbow said. Drivers can get bored, fatigue is a factor and finding skilled workers is still a challenge.

He says partial automation could solve the issues of boredom and fatigue, while continuing to address the shortage of skilled workers that plagues many primary producers.

“A system might exist where the driver could also operate other devices, such as automated chaser bins, or slave tractor systems where one driver operates two tractors,” he said.

Other issues that need to be addressed include having access to data management in the field, reliable broadband wireless coverage and insurance cover for unmanned vehicles.

NEWS DISCO named machine of the year A STATE-OF-THE-ART front-and-rear mower combination has been recognised with a prestigious European Machine of the Year award at the recent SIMA trade fair in Paris.

With an operating width of 9.1 metres and optional conditioner and automatic swathing functions, the DICSO 9200 is the flagship of CLAAS’ industry-leading mower range.

CLAAS Greenline group product manager Luke Wheeler said the 9200 DISCO incorporates CLAAS’s new ‘max cut’ cutterbar.

“This innovative design incorporates a new one-piece, wave-shaped bar support that allows the cutting disc modules to be set much further forward than the former P CUT cutterbar,” he said.

“In combination with the speciallyformed wear inserts , this creates an

enlarged cutting area and ensures optimal cutting quality, efficiency and durability.

“In turn, the new inserts have different geometries that have been optimised as each pair of blades moves towards or away from each other.”

The new cutterbars, which have already been incorporated into 28 new DISCO mounted and trailed models spanning 2.6 to 9.1 m, incorporate a range of other engineering innovations.

“Max cut has an exceptionally high level of torsional flexibility thanks to a special bolting process that achieves the same strength of welded seams,” Mr Wheeler said.

“The extra-wide cutterbar skids guide dirt and foreign material backwards and guarantee a clean finish, minimising wear and protecting pasture cover.

It is the first time Europe’s coveted “Machine of the Year” awards have been presented at SIMA. Previously announced every two years at the Agritechnica trade fair in Hanover, Germany, the awards will now be presented annually, alternating between the biennial German and French exhibitions.

A total of 19 agricultural technology journalists from eight European countries, under the coordination of French magazine Terre-net, awarded prizes.

Farm commodity update: THE world wheat indicator price averaged US$236 a tonne in the week ending 21 July, compared with US$249 a tonne in the previous week. The world coarse grains indicator averaged US$181/t for the same period, dropping from US$189/t a tonne in the previous week.

The world canola indicator price averaged US$420/t, which was down from US$433/t, while the world cotton indicator averaged US71.7 cents a pound, about one per cent lower than the previous week.

The world sugar indicator price averaged US11.7 cents a pound, in the week to 22 July, around 6pc lower.

The Australian grain sorghum indicator price (Sydney) finished at $338/t for the same period 22 July 2015, a drop of 3pc. Australia’s feed wheat indicator price finished at $316/t on 22 July, largely unchanged from the previous week.

The Australian feed barley indicator price (Sydney) was $296/t to 22 July, 1pc lower than the previous week.

The Australian canola indicator price (Portland, Victoria) was $540/t, 2pc lower.

Queensland’s young cattle indicator price (330–400 kg live weight, C3 score) averaged 517 cents a kilogram dressed weight in the week ending 17 July, which was 8pc higher than the previous week. Over the same period, the young cattle indicator price rose by 1pc in NSW to average 583c/kg and by 2pc in Victoria to average 576c/kg.

The lamb indicator price (18–22kg, fat score 2–4) averaged 576c/kg dressed weight in the week ending 17 July.

FARM PROFITABILITY Servicing maximises productivity and safety WITH its combination of hazards and work context, farming can be one of the most dangerous industries in Australia.

In the lead-up to a busy period of the year for growers and the machinery industry, it is an ideal time to emphasise the importance of adequately maintained machinery and equipment to support on-farm safety.

Improper machinery maintenance can lead to costly downtime and lower productivity. However, equipment that is not serviced properly can also become an unnecessary danger to its operator. Farmers and contractors looking to make up time or feel they need to cut corners as a result of preventable breakdowns are also making themselves vulnerable to injuries or more dire situations.

According to Safework Australia, unsafe use of plant is a major cause of workplace injury and death, including from unguarded moving parts, being crushed by mobile plant, sustaining fractures while checking or using plant, and electrocution or burns.

It is something Patrick McVeigh, Case IH national aftersales manager, has noted over his years of involvement with farm machinery.

“Farmers will talk about losing a finger, or the top of a finger,

like other people talk about stubbing a toe. It’s part of the hazard of being a farmer, but the indication is they weren’t doing something safely,” Mr McVeigh said.

“Too many times I’ve seen farmers trying to do something with a front end loader and a chain. Even at last year’s FarmSafe

New machinery is these days designed with safety in mind, but on older models additional safety features can be fitted by a qualified service technician, such as those at Case IH dealers.

Equipment that is not maintained properly is hazardous — with severe consequences possible when it’s farm equipment. And just because an operator might be a highly skilled farmer, they might not necessarily be equally skilled in mechanics.

As part of the push for safer farm workplaces, Australian WorkSafe authorities’ code of practice says “plant must be maintained and repaired according to the manufacturer’s specifications”.

The Case IH dealer network provides customers with factory trained service technicians. They have the skill and experience required to correctly maintain and service Case IH machinery, so that the safety risks associated with operating these important farm assets is minimised.

One such dealership in Geraldton, Western Australia, is doing just that each and every day. Purcher International’s Steve Purcher understands the importance of regular maintenance and service to maximise operator safety.

“WorkSafe is trying to stop preventable injuries,” he said.

“They don’t want untrained people ‘mucking around’ inside engines or the mechanicals of a harvester or baler or other machinery. The best people for those jobs are trained technicians.

“The number of trained mechanics missing fingers is very rare; they know all the safety aspects to ensure the machine’s not going to turn on accidentally when they’re working on it, and then when they’re finished, that everything is working properly and there are no hidden issues internally.

Mr Purcher said internal problems usually weren’t noticed until something fails.

“But a weakening bearing in a gearbox or differential say, will be picked up during a service when oil samples are taken and fixed before it becomes a major issue,” he said.

The dealership, Purcher International, prides itself on its workshop.

“Technological advances mean computer diagnostics are necessary, but we also need our specialised equipment for the safety of our mechanics and the benefit of our customers — including their own safety when they’re using it,” Mr Purcher said.

“Our equipment and trained support staff make it cheaper for our customers in the end because the job is done properly once: the first time.”

Mr Purcher says on top of the safety aspects, properly maintained farm machinery has profit benefits.

“Firstly it will work constantly when farmers need it. Operations such as seeding, harvesting, spraying and so on, are very time critical; breakdowns result in production and income losses,” he said.

“Secondly, in the long term, properly maintained farm machinery means better resale value.”

TECHNOLOGY Robotics a game-changer for farm production NEW research released by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is predicting that advanced robotics will boost productivity by up to 30 per cent in many industries by 2025.

Although industrial robots have been used in factories for decades, the use of advanced robots and automation is now reshaping how we grow and harvest the world’s food and fibre.

Boning in meatworks has already been automated and robotic milking systems are growing in popularity, easing staff workloads and lifting milk production. Robots are increasingly being used for tasks like weed management, fertilising and seeding. It seems now that the use of multiple cooperative highly-autonomous farm vehicles could lead to the next step in agricultural automation.

Unmanned tractors, an on-farm version of Google’s driverless car, are now been trialled in Australia. The tractor is guided by GPS signals and trials by Rice Research Australia, and their Japanese partners, have been successful in keeping the tractor to within 3-centimetre accuracy. The specialised satellite system also provides useful data like engine temperature and fuel usage to the operator.

INNOVATION Isobus Hydraulic Down Force System unveiled PRECISION agriculture hardware and software in Australia supplier, Ag Leader Technology, has announced the launch of the new 8 Channel Isobus Hydraulic Down Force System that allows users to monitor and control planter down force on-the-go.

The new Integra display system offers up to eight sections of control and adjusts pressure instantaneously based on field typography and soil conditions.

The Hydraulic Down Force system adjusts pressure instantly in changing soil types to ensure consistent, proper planting depth no matter the field.

The new system features an automatic, one second response time, unlike old pneumatic air bag systems that can take up to 20 seconds or more to respond. This is a difference of a quarter acre using a 24-row planter.

Users can now enjoy multiple channels of control, with row-by-row sensing and up to eight adjustable sections of control available in applying variable pressure. These row-by-row sensors measure the down force needs of every row, and the pressure of rows with more soil compaction present can be adjusted to maintain proper planting depth to achieve consistent plant emergence and better overall root development.

Ag Leader’s new system also boasts a unique stress minimising accumulator that prevents row unit stress and bounce caused by in-field obstacles.

This unique system acts as a cushion to prevent in-field obstacles and can accept up to 100 per cent of the down force actuator’s fluid capacity.

Virtual Terminal capability is available with the Down Force system through the new Isobus eight module that provides functionality with any Virtual Terminal capable display and lets users choose 1-4 sensors per channel. It also allows operation with the Ag Leader Integra and Versa

ORBITUARY Industry farewells leading ag engineer AUSTRALIA has lost one of its most prominent and innovative agricultural engineers, with the passing of Dr Graeme Quick at his home in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Queensland in May. Dr Quick was one of the world’s leading experts on grain harvesting technology, having been a partner in the initial development of the Axial Flow combine harvester.

His expertise extended to other farm machinery, including the Kwik-Cut front for harvesting soybeans.

After graduating in engineering from the University of Melbourne, and taking a Ph.D. from Iowa State University in the 1960s, Dr Quick spent the first few years working in the North American farm equipment industry.

He then took up a position as principal research scientist in CSIRO’s Division of Mechanical Engineering from 1976-1981.

Between 1981 and 1988 he was Director of Engineering for the NSW Department of Agriculture. He was Head of the Agricultural Engineering Division of the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Philippines, between 1988 and 1995.

In 1995-96 he worked on projects for FAO involving small farm machinery improvement in the developing world.

In 1997, he took up the position of team leader in the Power & Machinery Engineering Section and Adjunct Professor, Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering Department, Iowa State University until his retirement in 2004.

His research interests with Iowa State were on the engineering aspects of farm machinery design, particularly on harvesting of grains and biomass, and in crop cutting and other machine and plant phenomena.

He has built many pieces of field machinery, including a tractorloader and several harvesters. During

 Prominent agriculture machinery innovator Dr Graeme Quick passed away in May. his professional career Dr Quick was awarded 15 design patents, has produced 14 farm machinery books and over 150 peer-reviewed documents and research articles.

He was the first Australian to have been made a Fellow, American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) He was also a Fellow and Chartered Professional Engineer, Institution of Engineers, Australia.

In 2004 he was awarded US Agricultural Engineering’s highest recognition – the CH McCormick - JI Case gold medal for his meritorious contributions to the profession.

Throughout his professional career Dr Quick cultivated an exceptionally amicable relationship with all aspects of

the farm machinery business, from the largest multi-national corporations to the smallest short line manufacturer.

He was equally at home with research colleagues or yarning in the paddock with farmers, and formed many lifelong friendships. Since returning home to Queensland he continued book writing – his 14 book was recently published.

He also conducted engineering consultancies including GRDC, ongoing research and development on soybean harvesting technology, combine harvester fires, herbicide-resistant weed management, and most recently on an autonomous tool carrier development.

Half century celebrations at Dowerin Fields Days CELEBRATING its 50th year, the Dowerin GWN7 Machinery Field Days will be even bigger this year, with exhibitor numbers expected to top 700 for the first time.

Last year’s celebrations attracted over 24,000 visitors and 660 exhibitors, which was a 12 per cent rise in businesses and an incredible 20pc increase at the gates.

The Dowerin GWN7 Machinery Field Days is an agricultural expo located in the Central Wheatbelt of Western Australia.

The event has continually expanded over the past 50 years to become the most successful and largest event of its kind in WA. With a strong reputation, which is widely recognised throughout Australia, the Dowerin Field Days are now classed as being among the three largest agricultural machinery events in the country.

This year’s event will follow the rising trend, with record machinery and engineering exhibits already booked in and a considerable number of businesses on the waiting list.

Dowerin Events Management chairman Ashley Jones said the committee was considering opening up a new area of the site to accommodate the extra exhibitors, but will wait to see if there are any additional applicants before making a final decision.

“It is just getting to the point where we are simply running out of space, which is a really good problem to have,” Mr Jones said.

This year’s event will promote Careers in Agriculture, through a range of seminars and presentations, with many exhibitors expected to get involved.

“We will be promoting careers in agriculture in broad terms, whether it be agricultural sciences, farm management and agribusiness, or other careers available in rural areas including trades, nursing and real estate,” Mr Jones said.

“The seminars will take place in our new pavilion twice a day, with morning sessions on tertiary education, and afternoon sessions covering various other career options.

“Exhibitors are also invited to host interested parties to their site, to discuss the opportunities within their industries or individual businesses.”

Students and people looking for a tree change are encouraged to take part and will be provided with a booklet containing a full schedule and contact details for all participating companies.

“We are strongly encouraging schools to bring groups of high school students along to participate,” Mr Jones said.

In fitting with the ANZAC Centenary, there will also be a historical display at this year’s event including armoured vehicles, artillery and army personnel.

“The display is expected to be a major drawcard and will add something unique to our usual vintage machinery displays,” Mr Jones said.

A new hub of activity for the Midwest Expo in WA IN its 33rd year, the Mingenew Lions Midwest Expo is still finding new ways to bring the most relevant and innovative business information to farmers in WA’s Midwest and Wheatbelt.

This year, Expo will be launching its Business and Technology Hub, a new indoor marquee exhibit and seminar space located in the heart of the machinery and oval precinct.

The Business and Technology Hub concept was developed in response to the growing numbers of small to medium farm related research, technology and business exhibitors in the Family Interest Marquee.

“Through evaluation of our exhibitors and visitors we realised that we could probably increase the value of the Expo experience to both parties by creating a new marquee specific to these agricultural research, business and technology interests” Chair of Mingenew Expo, Helen Newton, said.

The Hub will also feature a seminar space with presentations from Expo exhibitors on the latest agricultural research and technologies, and agribusiness updates. The Hub Seminars further develops the ‘farm-talk conference area’ initiative which was successfully trialled at Expo in 2014.

“The farm-talk program was a hit with farmers at Expo last year” said Ms Newton. “It gave exhibitors an additional medium to present their information and gave them great exposure” Ms Newton said.

The University of Western Australia, Market Book Australia, The Department of Water and the Mingenew Irwin Group were some of the first to nab spots in the new Business and Technology Hub. Mingenew Irwin Group executive officer Sheila Charlesworth will be exhibiting at this year’s Midwest Expo.

“MIG is always excited to be part of the Mingenew Expo, we catch up with more of our members and meet so many new people who come to find out what MIG is about” Ms Charlesworth said. This year MIG’s display will feature a slide show of the Mingenew Farming Families project.

Spring into new season at Newdegate Field Days THE 43rd Annual Newdegate Machinery Field Days are just around the corner and as organisers, volunteers and the community are gearing up for a great couple of days, with strong exhibitor numbers and lots to see and do for all family members, it is anticipated that the event will be a real crowd pleaser.

This year’s field days will be held on September 2-3.

The official opening of the newly relocated and refurbished Newdegate Railway Building, an action-packed family entertainment program, the return of the Dog Jump Challenge, and the latest release machinery are just a few of the attractions patrons will see at this year’s event.

From the first Newdegate Field Days held in 1973, the iconic event has grown to become one of the most recognised on the agricultural calendar. With more than 300 exhibitors and up to 11,000 visitors annually, the organising committee are focused on providing both a unique and

fulfilling experience for all who attend and exhibit, with something to interest all members of the family, no matter what age.

Machinery, technology and research, animals and livestock, outdoor and camping exhibits, art and photography, fashion, show bags, food and wine, local produce, live entertainment, and much, much more, form the basis of this year’s two day event, which promotes and celebrates agriculture.

After its initial success in 2014, the Dog Jump Challenge is set to return in 2015.

Taking place on Machinery site 91, at 3pm, Wednesday September 2, entry to the Dog Jump Challenge is free; however handlers will need to pay to enter the Field Days.

Joining the line up for this year’s

entertainment is Tyrannosaurus Park who will be showcasing their exciting dinosaur discovery trail which includes dinosaur animatronics, as well as performing live comedy shows with Dezzy Dinosaur across the two days.

Climbtastic will be featuring with their bungy trampolines and a rock climbing wall, Fairy Sandie and her gorgeous fairy helpers from Ladybird Entertainment will have performances, workshops and roaming fairies for our younger visitors.

PUMPS & GENERATORS Yanmar YH series diesel generators in demand ANDREW Smith established AJS Machinery in 2000, his core business activity being the design and manufacture of custom made generator sets.

Today he no longer regards himself as a manufacturer. Instead he’s an authorised dealer for the Yanmar range of water cooled diesel generators.

The transition from custom-built generator sets to supplying the same customer base with an off-the-shelf Yanmar product is a powerful reflection of how the Yanmar YH Series of generators is satisfying the market.

“We don’t build our own generator sets anymore,” Mr Smith said.

“It is just not viable for us when the Yanmar YH Series is such a top quality product. The demand for power generation has grown and the market demand has been particularly well met

The market that Andrew Smith supplies is both diverse in application and geographically spread.

Recent customers have been spread from farmers in Mr Smith’s own backyard in Kurmond, NSW, the outlying farms of Sydney, to a quarry in Port Hedland and the rural outskirts of Melbourne.

“We have been a Yanmar Dealer since 2004,” Mr Smith said.

“In addition to the excellent Yanmar YH Series generators, we’ve also actively promoted and sold the Yanmar eGi invertor series which is ideally suited to interact with your solar power system and deliver a high power supply with a pure sine wave output, perfect for sensitive equipment.”

The Yanmar YH Series comprises five models ranging in output from 13.4kVA to 55.0 kVA. The YH Series has been specifically engineered to deliver clean and reliable electrical power. PUMPS & GENERATORS Match the engine with the pump IN RECENT years there has been a growing interest in the use of diesel engines on portable fire pumps.

While the reasons for this trend are varied, the greatest challenge facing both the end-user and manufacturer is the difference in response to load between a petrol engine and a diesel engine.

For decades now, self-priming engine driven portable pumps, such as the Davey Firefighter range, have been powered by petrol engines.

The designers of pump ends have been able to allow for the ability of quality petrol engines to adjust their speed to suit the load being placed on them.

Essentially this inherent ‘self governing’ has resulted in pumps and engine combination capable of high heads and impressive flows.

Unfortunately when looking at the diesel engine equipped options, it’s not as

simple as bolting a standard fire pump to a similarly powered diesel engine.

HAY & SILAGE Tigo PR loader wagons set hay making benchmark JARRAD Byrnes has built his contracting business, JJB Agriculture Contracting, from the ground-up over the last decade.

Jarrad started out in 2004 by hiring his father’s tractor to go baling, and since then he has built up his business to the point where he purchased two Lely Tigo PR 60 loader wagons last year.

Jarrad ran another brand of loader wagons for four years but shopped around when it came time to replace them. He says he quickly realised the Lely Tigo was a front-runner.

“The Tigo has better cut length. I was looking at another brand but the Tigo is definitely the new benchmark,” he said.

“The grass goes through them real easy. It just flows through. Our Fendt pulls them no worries and we go over a lot of steep hills. They have excellent manoeuvrability and hang onto the hills really well.”

The Lely Tigo comes in two series: the PR with capacities of 45m3 to 80m3 at medium compaction, and the XR wagon which has capacities from 65m3 to 100m3.

Mr Byrnes’ Lely Tigo PR 60s have a 1.9m pick-up. The camless pick-up has seven tine bars with tines spaced 54mm apart. This ensures clean and efficient crop pick-up. The rotational speeds of the rotor and pick-up are perfectly coordinated to ensure excellent crop flow.

The pick-up also has a crop roller and castor guide wheels. The crop roller improves crop pick-up and the height adjustable guide wheels relieve the load on the pick-up when turning.

The seven-point chopping rotor in both the Tigo PR and XR ranges is 800mm in diameter and the fingers are 25mm wide giving a total surface area of 1.0m2. This wide surface area contributes to the low power requirement and is very gentle on the crop.

The knives are serrated and made of high quality steel. They are located between the rotor fingers and ensure a

consistent quality of cut.

The knives are hydraulically engaged and disengaged and the length of chop can be as little as 37mm. The chopping unit swings out to the side and knives can be removed easily.

A major feature of the Lely Tigo is the moveable bulkhead. It can pivot through 80 degrees and plays an important role in assisting the floor chains to unload.

When the bulkhead pivots and moves forward, it provides an extra 6.0m3 of space. Moving the bulkhead also brings the load’s centre of gravity forward for more even weight distribution.

Tigo wagons can be automatically or manually unloaded. When unloading begins, the Tigo’s tailgate opens out to fully clear the load without obstruction.

As the floor chains activate to unload, the bulkhead pushes rearwards to reduce pressure on the chains and gearbox.

The floor chains operate with two speed during unloading. Once the load is moving, the chains shift into the second faster speed.

“The grass just falls out the back perfectly. It is very fast to unload. I reckon it is more economical than baling,” Mr Byrnes said.

Depending on the model, Tigo wagons have a chassis with two or three axles.

Axle options include hydro-pneumatic suspension and automatic level adjustment.

This ensures the wagon stays parallel with the slope. This also allows for an on-board weighing system. Various specifications of flotation tyres are available to add to the machine’s stability and to minimise soil compaction.

Mr Byrnes and his team at JJB Agriculture Contracting also love the Tigo’s low maintenance.

“All we have to do is grease up, sharpen up and off you go again. It is that easy. It saves us a lot of time both in the paddock and on maintenance,” he said.

All of the Lely Tigos’ functions can be controlled from within the cab with an easy-to-use monitor. The monitor is ISOBUS compatible and it can be used in parallel with the Tigo camera.

WATER & IRRIGATION Water and nitrogen key for irrigated forage crops A WALK in mid-March across the parched Cressy paddocks and into the Tasmania Institute of Agriculture’s irrigated forage trial at the Cressy Research and Demonstration Station reiterated to TIA extension officer Peter Ball the important relationship between water and nitrogen in irrigated forage crops.

“Of course green is always pleasant when everything else all around is brown and you’d hope for some of that with the application of water,” Mr Ball said.

“And whilst the water quite obviously drove the plants to grow, the amount of green was another matter.”

A mere 10 days after being harvested by mowing, the regrowth was showing significant variation.

The fescue plots looked good, denser and more productive at this time than many of the other plots.

The ryegrass had good leaf extension but seemed less densely tillered with less biomass in this drier and hotter time of year.

“That would make perfect sense.

Ryegrass is fighting its instincts in growing and not resting,” Mr Ball said.

“It may be that differences like these, if the magnitude proves big enough, can have a real impact on the water use efficiency of the pasture in this environment.

“Time and data, not my extension eyes will tell. But the observation is still food

for thought.”

Mr Ball said the water and nitrogen interaction seemed clearer and that while the water alone did not turn the green into luxuriance, water and nitrogen was another matter.

“The amount of green and total growth seemed clearly greater with both inputs. As did the density of growing shoots,” he said.

“More active shoots now, supported by these inputs will set up more rain-fed growth when autumn breaks. In this way water use efficiency extends beyond the measure of return on water applied at one time, to the impact over a year and the value of a system.”

On the ryegrass also there seemed to be an interaction of nutrition with the occurrence of rust, which reduces feed quality and palatability. The nitrogen fed

blocks did not seem effected whilst their irrigation only neighbours did.

“Obviously if you pay to grow out of season feed it doesn’t help if disease reduces energy intake. Species interacts here too. The fescue, brome and cocksfoot plots were not affected,” he said.

“Simple observations like these, supported by data, can represent real pathways to better value return in intensive pasture production systems.”

The plots are also setting the scene for some interesting observations of legume interactions with each of the plot ingredients, water, species and nutrition. There is an inter-play of legume abundance with the legume species, its grass companion and the water and nitrogen inputs.

“The survival of the legume, or rather not, under the frequent nitrogen application is an early observation,” Mr Ball said.

“The speed with which this seems to have become apparent is very interesting.

It’s only a year since sowing and some plots are already almost devoid of clover.”

“Work that looks at the interaction of frequency and rate of nitrogen application by species combination may be required to look at how legume can be managed in intensive systems and whether it has benefit at all.”

More complex animal grazing trials may also be required to truly untangle these value points, and understand the comparative merit legume has not only as a nitrogen provider but as a feed quality provider too.

“An ancillary observation at the site is the plant establishment. As an example, at sowing rates of 12kg per ha in a mixed sward and 15kg in monoculture, there was clearly no need for any more of the tetraploid ryegrass seed to be sown,” Mr Ball said.

“Plant density was perfect. More plants established would not have meant more cover or opportunity for growth.”

WATER & IRRIGATION Project to improve irrigation profits A PROJECT aimed at improving the profit of 3000 cotton, dairy, rice and sugar irrigators was announced recently as one of 12 successful Rural R&D for Profit programme projects.

The project, Smarter irrigation for profit, is a partnership between the major irrigation industries of cotton, dairy, rice and sugar, led by the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) in conjunction with Dairy Australia, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), Sugar Research Australia and other research partners.

The project aims to improve the profit of each individual irrigator enterprise across the four industries by $20,000-40,000 per annum, with the support of 16 R&D partners and up to 19 farmer-managed learning sites.

CRDC Executive Director Bruce Finney welcomed the announcement of today’s funding, which will see up to $4 million directed from the Rural R&D for Profit programme to this project.

“Irrigated agriculture is responsible for 30 percent of all agricultural production in Australia, and half the profit. This is a

large-scale, ambitious project designed to achieve a 10-20 percent improvement in water productivity, efficiency and farmer profitability, while also improving crosssector industry research collaboration,” Mr Finney said.

“It is designed to increase on-farm profitability by integrating new irrigation scheduling and delivery technologies into good irrigation practice. It will build on previous research to drive additional improvements in cotton and rice, and will transfer learnings from the cropping industries to dairy,” Mr Finney said.

“Our aim is to increase on-farm profit through the adoption of automated and precision application technologies across all industries.”

CRDC is also a partner in four other projects that have been selected for funding as part of the announcement: • Stimulating private sector extension in Australian agriculture to increase returns from R&D, led by Dairy Australia; • Improved use of seasonal forecasting to increase farmer profitability, led by RIRDC; • A profitable future for Australian agriculture: Biorefineries for higher-

TRACTORS & TILLAGE Robotic tractor trial on show at Jerilderie WORKING its way over rice crops in New South Wales, a robotic tractor from Japan has demonstrated the potential for new satellite-guided technology in cropping operations.

Trialled at Rice Research Australia, about 20 kilometres west of Jerilderie, in February this year, the unmanned Yanmar tractor showed it can autonomously spray, sow and cultivate.

The trials also showed the satellite system used to self-steer the tractor should surpass the availability, accuracy and reliability of current GPS systems.

This unmanned tractor is guided by a new, advanced satellite system launched in Japan – the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS).

The Japanese system allows satellites to pinpoint the tractor’s position within centimetres, instead of metres, in situations where Australian growers have to use the mobile phone network.

Existing auto-steer guidance systems depend on real-time kinematic satellites, ground-based positioning stations and the mobile phone network.

The QZSS provides around-the-clock positioning using four satellites orbiting above Japan and Australia.

Another reported benefit of the QZSS is its ability to stream information about crops, such as canopy health and moisture content.

It can also stream data on robotic operations, such as a tractor’s fuel consumption and engine temperature.

Following the launch of the first satellite, called Michibiki, in September 2010, the Japanese Government now plans to launch another three satellites before 2018.

Over the next three years, the new satellite network is expected to provide a platform for the commercial release of the robotic Yanmar tractors in Australia.

Hosting the trials in the Riverina region, Rice Research Australia manager Russell Ford believes the technology will find its way into Australian grains operations in the coming decade.

TRACTORS & TILLAGE Tractor passion drives machinery whizz-kid in NZ YOUNG Quinn Berry might have grown up surrounded by dairy cows, but there’s no doubt his really passion is for tractors, not cows.

The 14-year-old New Zealand school student is well on his way to building a successful career in the agricultural machinery industry, combining his love of tractors with some after-school work at the local Massey Ferguson dealership.

Quinn has already worked for a year at Massey Ferguson dealership, Matamata Tractors and Machinery but he has been driving tractors on his family’s Waitoa dairy farm since he was five.

“I like playing around with tractors and seeing what’s in the engine,” Quinn said.

His parents, Cam and Michelle, have two Massey Ferguson tractors but aren’t big on machinery. Cam says, he has a bit of knowledge but Quinn is the one with the real enthusiasm.

“It’s shown up ever since he could walk. Anything with metal and wheels he focused on. He was always wandering around with a socket or a crescent, taking things apart,” Cam said.

Although Quinn wasn’t so great at putting back together the machines he’d taken apart, he father says that has improved.

“Now when his older brother says something needs fixing on the farm, Quinn is the one who disappears, and comes back saying he’s fixed it,” Cam said.

Quinn hasn’t wavered in his desire to work at Matamata Tractors, an ambition he has harboured since he first visited the dealership when he was five..

“It’s quite funny seeing a kid that young with such tunnel vision,” Cam said.

His parents told him he wasn’t allowed to work at the dealership until he was at high school and so, on his first day of Year 9, Quinn walked into the workshop and asked the owner for a job after school.

Quinn works two afternoons a week.

He is starting with the basics – waterblasting vehicles and keeping the place tidy. At the same time he’s soaking up information.

“I watch them take tractors apart and learn. I’ve put together new lawnmowers, and a rake and some tedders,” he said.

Matamata Tractors salesman Bruce Lynn says Quinn is pretty capable for such a young fellow.

“He can drive anything we’ve got, and moves things around for us. I’ve no doubt he’ll end up running the place one day,” Bruce said.

“He’s got an awesome attitude and that’s why he’s employed. He had a goal to work here. I’m sure he’ll be a diesel mechanic or whatever he wants to do.”

Bruce told Quinn about a 1953 MF 28 sitting rusting in a shed. Quinn purchased this old girl with his work money and has recently finished doing it up.

“I went in on my own time, so I wasn’t interrupting my work. The mechanics helped me when I needed it. I waited until they were finished so I didn’t interrupt them,” Quinn said.

“It was rusty, so I gave it a clean. I changed a solenoid to help it start, and made it into a gear stick start.

“I put in a new battery and we changed one of the front tyre rims, and put on new mud guards and a new bonnet.”

He also fitted a new carburettor kit and unblocked fuel lines. The MF 28 is now re-painted, ready to work. Quinn is considering putting a mower on it to do the lawn around the house, or maybe use a back blade to grade his family’s driveway.

“I like using stuff and fixing it. I want to do a diesel mechanic’s apprenticeship and then maybe have my own business as a contractor.

“I like working with metal, and I’m into practical more than theory. I’d rather be outside than in an office and I like heavy machinery. There’s so much you can do with tractors – lift and pull – there’s so much to them.”

GRAIN Tracked chaser bins cut paddock compaction IN KEEPING with the major trend to tracked drive systems in highhorsepower tractors and combine harvesters, Davimac has become the first Australian manufacturer to design, build and fabricate a rubber track system for the best chaser bins sought by grain growers and contractors.

And the benefits of the new tracked bins have been found to be much wider than originally expected.

With Davimac’s tracked chaser bins there is less likelihood of becoming bogged in light sandy country, while also opening a wider harvest window in wet conditions.

The benefits of reducing compaction on cropping country are widely demonstrated and recognised, chiefly in significantly improved yields.

With many grain growers having already adopted tracked tractors and combine harvesters to this end, it was only logical to extend the benefits by reducing soil compaction under the high capacity chaser bins used to get the crop out of the paddock.

NSW manufacturer Davimac, already recognised over 30 years for some of the best chaser bins and implements in Australian farming, has led the way in this innovation.

With a track width of 914mm (or 36 inches) and a ground contact length of more than three metres, the Davimac tracked bins significantly increase flotation, and reduce ground pressure and soil compaction while carrying up to 35 tonnes of grain, depending on the particular model in use. A well-designed rubber track system will handle higher loads than comparable wheeled bins.

Tracks are supplied optionally at 2.56m or 3.0m centres for ready compatibility with popular tramlining and systems farming operations. Each track is mounted on four-track end wheels and supported by eight-track mid wheels. A narrower 60cm track

Track tension is maintained by an inbuilt hydraulic system boasting an easy to check pressure gauge and pressure release system for maintenance.

While dramatically reducing soil compaction under significant loads, the Davimac tracked bins also turn easily without the ‘scrubbing’ experienced with non-steerable wheeled bins on bogie axles.

This further reduces soil impacts while also easing draft loads on the tractor.

To further complement the advantages of its tracked bins, Davimac has also introduced a unique cushion hitch – another first among Australian manufacturers.

The cushion hitch reduces shunting and jarring being transferred between the tractor and the bin when travelling over rough terrain. This is smoother for the operator while also reducing

wear and tear on both tractor and bin.

Early feedback on the Davimac tracked chaser bins suggests demand will soon challenge supply, while recognition of the Davimac innovation has resulted in its nomination as the first entry in the 2015 Henty Machine of the Year Award.

Davimac’s managing director Shannon McNab says the tracked bins are built in line with requirements of the Australian market.

FIELD DAY & EXPO PREVIEW Focus on the future at Farm World THE positive outlook for the dairy industry will be the major focus of Farm World 2016, to be staged at Lardner Park at Warragul in Victoria’s Gippsland.

Running from Thursday April 7 to Sunday April 10 next year, the annual event expected to attract over 50,000 visitors.

Many dairy farmers have experienced a year of consolidation and growth, in contrast to a volatile international market.

Maintaining prices at $6.00 per kilogram of milk solids or above for three years in a row means that farmer confidence in the future of the industry remains high.

Investing for the future will be a priority.

The dairy industry is Gippsland’s largest agricultural commodity and accounts for over 20 per cent of Australia’s milk supply.

In other sectors, the scene is set for a growth in farmer demand. Record beef prices, strengthening wool prices and historically high sheep and lamb prices, combined with favourable seasonal conditions, will inevitably provide farmers with the confidence to further develop their operations.

The theme for Farm World 2016 is ‘Dairy – an industry on the move’, shining the light on the importance and future of the industry, with the focus on best

TMA NEWS Shining a light on what ‘big data’ means for industry THROUGHOUT the year there has been quite a lot of commentary around a relatively new phenomenon known as ‘big data’ – but what is it and how is it used? Big data, which is also referred to as telematics, basically refers to the amount of information gathered by machinery involved in farming including things such as yield mapping, protein monitoring, precision ag, animal health and general information around the inputs and outputs of farming.

The information is gathered via GPS and mobile phone data and really nothing new to most Australian farmers, however there are plenty of people who want to get their hands on it.

Just picture a header harvesting a wheat crop in south-western Victoria with a worker operating the header. Telematics can send the farmer information on how the machine is being operated in relation to speed, fuel burn, losses, tonnes per hectare and per hour.

It can also send the owner information on the crop such as yield mapping,

protein and moisture levels, then this can be overlaid with planting and spraying information to garner real-time profits per hectare and distinguish the performance of one paddock to another.

So who wants this information besides the farmer? The machinery dealer can monitor the health and condition of the header, diagnose any faults or issues that may arise, check the operator’s proficiency in operating the machine through fuel burn and idle time, plus provide real-time service to the owner of the machine without physically being in front of it.

The agronomist and farmer can determine the success of seed varieties, fertiliser application through the year,

and the success of various practices such as controlled traffic farming. The seed and fertiliser company can see how their products have performed throughout the growing season. The grain buyer can work out how many tonnes and the quality of the grain available to purchase and the farm accountant can see how much money will be coming in the door in real time – as it happens.

Even with this very simplistic example, this big data can be of serious economic benefit to many suppliers if they can get their hands on it – so next question is who owns this data?

The obvious answer is the farmer – but what if he hasn’t paid the extra bucks to allow the telematics to be gathered in this format? Most manufacturers will charge a fee or an extra amount to ‘turn on’ the tools in the machinery required to gather this data, so if the farmers doesn’t want it, can it be turned on by someone else to gather the information?

Moreover, who gathers the information and where does it go? To the dealer that sold you the machine, to a cloud for everyone to access, or somewhere else?

These are all tough questions to answer and depending on who you talk to, the answers can vary. To give you some insight on how important this is, there are already partnerships in the US and Europe between machinery companies and chemical providers and many more to come – this information may not be important to the farmer but it is extremelyimportant to many others who are trying to sell their wares to that farmer.

It’s all a bit fluid at the moment and without question there are plenty of farmers already utilising this information to their advantage but watch this space – we haven’t even touched the surface yet as big data becomes more readily available off machinery used in farming, and companies will pay handsomely to get their hands on it.
