Our say The snow season has kicked off well following early snowfalls, resulting in some mountain resorts opening early. Others are working hard with their snowmaking following continuing investment by all resorts in snowmaking. Now we need the snow gods to deliver a big dump.

Looking ahead, the resorts and alpine towns are ready to welcome winter visitors to ski, snowboard, snow play and compete, as well the entertainment junkies looking to enjoy all that’s on offer. Accommodation to suit every budget on and off mountain is available but it’s best to book early to get your preferred dates.

The ski industry is an important part of the Victorian recreation and regional economies. Last season Victorian resorts attracted 762,000 visitors which represented approximately 1.4milion visitor days. This was a 12% increase in visitors and 5% increase in visitor days compared with the 10-year average

After an amazing Northern winter when our Australian snow sports athletes celebrated fantastic success with two World Cup Series Crystal Globes, 35 World Cup and 5 World Championships medals, our hopes are high for Aussie success to improve on eight Olympic medals won in the past three Winter Olympics.

IT’S ALWAYS a good way to start the official winter season with actual white flakes on the ground and this year Mother Nature decided to come along to the Australian ski resorts and make her presence known in glorious fashion and she did so, a few weeks early, just to get the party started!

Mt Buller officially opened on Friday June 2 after receiving some impressive natural falls, which were backed up by their extensive snowmaking infrastructure.

The ‘on’ switch was flicked to their new stadium lighting which lit up Bourke St on the night for skiers and boarders and the beginner run remained open for the rest of the week which was a whole week earlier than anticipated.

One thing Buller does well is a party and they did so over the long weekend with fireworks, gluhwein and children’s entertainment and most importantly there was snow on the ground, which made for a great atmosphere over the village.

Mt Hotham launched their ‘True Spirit of Alpine Australia’ branding campaign at the start of June and the new identity positions Hotham as Australia’s most thrill-seeking alpine mountain and Hotham also received some decent early snowfalls.

With snow on the ground, the official opening of the Mt Hotham 2017 Winter Season was announced by MP, (Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria) Danielle Green.

Guests enjoyed the first runs of the season on opening weekend, with lifts operating from the Saturday and perfect weather conditions.

The weekend saw the most accessible terrain on opening weekend since 2012 with The Summit, Big D and Summit Trainer ski runs in full operation.

MP Danielle Green enjoyed her time up at Mt Hotham and praised the role of the Alpine resorts and economic benefit they provide to the wider community.

Mt Baw Baw also recorded impressive early snowfalls and were able to open early as a result of the white flakes making their way to the Gippsland region.

The cool weather and cold front from the south resulted in record amounts of early snowfall at Mt Baw Baw. The mountain officially opened for snow play on the first day of winter which was a real welcome for the resort.

Mt Baw Baw General Manager, John Fascio, said resort staff had not seen such a vast amount of snow before the official launch, historically held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend every year, since 2010.

“We were surprised to see snowfall at the beginning of May, and the snow in late May/early June enabled us to be able to open the mountain more than a week early,” Mr Fascio said.

By Steve Cuff AUSTRALIA will send one of their biggest and strongest ever teams to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February 2018. If our recent World Championship success is any guide, we can expect to seriously contend for at least two gold medals, after Britt Cox won mogul gold and Scotty James snowboard halfpipe gold at the championships.

Combined with former champions, Torah Bright, Alex Pullin and Lydia Lassila, the team exudes a mix of experience and youthful enthusiasm and have realistic chances for up to eight podiums.

Britt Cox and Scotty James are gold medal chances, but do not discount Alex Pullin and Jarryd Hughes in snowboard cross, and Belle Brockhoff was leading the women’s snowboard cross before a knee injury ended her season.

Mogul skier Matt Graham has won World Cup events and is ranked third, Danielle Scott and Lydia Lassila sit second and third respectively on the women’s aerial rankings and Laura Peel is ranked sixth. Sami KennedySim had her best season ever skier cross season and finished with a podium, so is an outside chance and David Morris, while not ranked highly at the moment did win silver at Sochi 2014 in men’s aerials and bronze at World Champs.

2018 Winter Olympics

We gaze into our crystal ball and give a glimpse of what could be our greatest games results ever. *Moguls Britt Cox first ventured onto the Winter Olympic stage as a fresh faced 15 year old in Vancouver 2010 and she will return eight years later as the favourite to win gold after a huge breakthrough season in 2016-17. Britt has won gold at World Championships and the overall World Cup Crystal Globe and will be focused to win and will expect gold.

Matt Graham was disappointed with his World Championships, but come next February if he has a steady lead up on the World Cup circuit watch him perform the runs of his life. Matt is a very strong medal chance and could stand atop the podium if his cards fall into place. *Snowboard Cross Jarryd Hughes and Alex “Chumpy” Pullin will lead the Aussie charge and both have won big events including World Championships for Pullin and X Games gold for Hughes. Pullin will want to perform well on what could be a final Olympic games for him. Pullin has that presence and knows how to get the job done and without a doubt could be a serious medal contender.

Hughes time will be 2018 as he has developed over the years to now be a contender week in

week out on the circuit, which is a cutthroat business where everyone needs an ounce of luck. Expect him to be the best placed Aussie and a huge medal contender.

Young Adam Lambert burst into the big-time last season, going from being Europa Cup overall winner to then be in the final six at World Championships. A smoky outsider for a medal along with Cameron Bolton who on his day can be up there.

Belle Brockhoff was having her best season ever and leading the World Cup until she blew her knee out last season. Belle will be in full rehab mode and will need to have a few World Cup starts under her belt in 2018 to know exactly where she will stand. You cannot discount her chances as she has proved she is up there with the best and is one tough candidate. *Aerials Have we ever disappointed in women’s aerials? NO. So this time should be no different and Lydia Lassila would like nothing more than to write a glorious final chapter to her career with another medal. Lydia has every chance to be on the podium, and with luck on her side she should just make it to the top step.

Danielle Scott has been working her way up the rankings and is in the best form of her career.

now after many years and she will produce on the day and be a very strong podium chance. One and two for the Aussie girls would be an all-time result with Laura Peel not out of contention either.

David Morris has shown he has the mettle to reach those dizzy heights of the podium with a silver at Sochi in 2014. David has the ability to come from the clouds and perform for big events and he is an outside chance of a medal. *Snowboard Halfpipe Scotty James is king of the world at the moment in the men’s halfpipe, no small feat when you consider he is competing against Shaun White, the best for over a decade. After a stellar year he can go on with the job and win or at least podium in South Korea.

Torah Bright is almost certain to compete in her favourite event of halfpipe. Torah has virtually taken a year off to just ride and work for her sponsors, but when the whips start cracking expect Australia’s golden girl to up the ante. A podium would not be out of place. *Skier Cross Our best hope of any medal in skier cross lies with Sami Kennedy-Sim, but she is up against a tough field of women and all skiers need their fair share of luck. If Sami can pick up where she left off last season, and raise

her bar even higher, she will be an outside chance of a medal. *Slopestyle Everyone among the top ten can podium on any given day and Russell Henshaw has been with the top pack for many years.

Ranked eighth at the moment he would need to perform at his best and could possibly be a podium contender. *Other Sports We will send a big squad in many other disciplines such as skating, luge, cross country skiing and alpine skiing.

In short track skating Deanna Lockett has shown positive results with top 5 finishes and could surprise in her favourite event of 1500m. Daniel Greig has shown promise in long track and if he can find any form could be an outside chance in the 500m. Both skaters will attend their second Olympic games It will be a great atmosphere for all athletes to compete and improve, which is how Australia has gained results over many campaigns. They are persistent, determined and all of Australia will be urging them on.

A look at Australia’s medal history at the Winter Olympics

By Steve Cuff AUSTRALIA’S first Winter Olympic medal came courtesy of the short track skating team in 1994 at Lillehammer.

The team consisted of Steven Bradbury, Kieran Hansen, Andrew Murtha and Richard Nizielski and they secured their podium position in the men’s 5000 metre relay.

At the 1998 Nagano games in Japan, Zali Steggall became our first individual winter medalist capturing bronze in the women’s slalom.

This was no small feat considering the might and strength of the European and North American teams.

Australia’s first moment of golden glory came at Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002 where Steve Bradbury would enter into Australian folklore winning our inaugural gold medal.

Most Australian fans will forever remember this moment as the leading skaters crashed on the final turn in the men’s 1000 metre short track skating event, and Bradbury, who did not have the leg speed to keep up, cruised over the line in astonishment to become a Winter Olympic gold medalist.

As Australia celebrated, a pint sized pocket rocket aerial skier named Alisa Camplin, who had never won a World Cup, stepped up to the jump after teammate and event favourite Jacqui Cooper succumbed to injury earlier in the games.

There were no expectations on Camplin, but with a nerve of steel, she soared into the history books and Australian hearts at the Deer Valley site becoming our second gold medalist.

As she shed tears in the finish area her mother, who she did not know was at the event was passed through the crowd and lifted into the front row to celebrate with her joyful daughter.

At the Torino 2006 games, a young Canadian born mogul skier, Dale Begg-Smith who was skiing for Australia,

showed perfect execution in the bumps and overcame much controversy to set down a glorious final run and capture gold in the Italian Alps. Camplin would secure her second Olympic medal winning a bronze in aerials.

In Vancouver 2010, Australia had its most successful campaign with Torah Bright and Lydia Lassila both capturing gold medals and Dale Begg-Smith winning a close fought silver medal.

Torah Bright, the new golden girl of Australian snow who had placed fifth in halfpipe at Torino had a disastrous first run in the Vancouver final to be sitting last. Starting first in the second run, Bright landed every jump and scored highly and patiently waited as her competitors tried to better her score.

They could not oust Bright from the top position and that trademark smile beamed across Australia and the world as the Olympic champion.

Lydia Lassila (née Ierodiaconou) had never had luck on her side, with a crash at Torino in 2006 that ended her campaign with a knee injury.

In 2010 the Vancouver air suited her to a tee and the then current World Cup champion etched her name into the record books with a superb final jump to take gold.

In Russia for the 2014 Sochi games, Lassila performed the demanding quad twisting triple somersault that no other woman had ever attempted.

Her execution was not perfect but she still captured a bronze medal to cement her standings as one of the alltime great aerial skiers.

Fellow aerial team member, the effervescent David Morris would win silver, coming from the clouds to unexpectedly reach the podium for a silver medal.

Torah Bright would become Australia’s most successful Winter Olympian capturing a silver medal in Russia in the women’s halfpipe to add to her 2010 gold medal.

Should the Olympics open up and let athletes display their own sponsors?

By Adam Begg The Olympic movement has one of the most streamlined and profitable sponsorship frameworks in the world.

In the reporting period between the Vancouver 2010 and the London 2012 Olympics, the Olympic movement raised over US$8 billion including $3.9 billion from broadcast rights and agreements and US$950 million from the global top sponsorship program.

It’s not that they don’t allow sponsorship, in fact it’s quite the opposite. They are open to any form of sponsorship as long as it is theirs.

Is it time for the Olympics to get with the times and open up sponsorship for their athletes who help generate all this money and let them advertise their own sponsors who helped them reach this pinnacle in sport.

Since the Olympics first began they have been targeted towards amateur sports.

This has worked in the past for summer sports but for Winter Olympics it has been difficult. Most Winter Olympians are professional, meaning that they get paid and they have sponsors that back them and expect exposure in return.

Athletes are encouraged not to

tweet and send social media posts about non-official sponsors. Their helmet and goggle logos have to be a certain size and they are not allowed to advertise the brands that have supported them to get where they are.

Competitions that athletes compete in to qualify for the Olympics pay good money to reach the podium, and brands plus energy drink logos are common place on the nose of boards and headwear.

Snowboards as an example can be like mini billboards and advertise cars, electronics brands, energy drinks, eyewear, clothing, board companies and resorts.

All these companies help shape the athlete and fund their journey to qualify for the big event. They do this for the tiniest bit of exposure yet then have to forgo any coverage to adhere to the outdated rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Snowboarders have always struggled to be accepted by the industry but with the addition of slopestyle at the Olympics there are a lot more viewers watching our sport.

Snowboarders have tried to express themselves and their individuality as best they can while representing their countries.

Heikki Sorsa was the first

snowboarder to show a bit of individuality on the world stage when he sported a massive spiked Mohawk at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.

Don’t get me wrong I think that representing your country is one of the highest honours that you can have as an athlete.

I just also think that snowboarders should have the right to express themselves and represent the people and brands who helped get them there.

Snowboarding was cool before it went to the Olympics and had to conform to the ancient rules of the IOC. You can bet that the IOC and their sponsors are profiting even more in the coming years off the extra exposure that snowboarding has brought to the Olympics.

Snowboarders are proud to represent their countries.

Just look at Scotty James at the World Championships on top of the podium draped in an Australian flag, sporting big red boxing gloves with a boxing kangaroo on them and a Red Bull Logo front and centre on his headwear.

Surely the time has come where snowboarders can still express their individuality and their sponsors while representing their countries on the world stage.

Hotham Ski Patrol receive funding for new ambulance MOUNT Hotham Ski Patrol have raised $40,000, in addition to being awarded 2-4-1 grant funding in the sum of $80,000 by Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) for the purchase of a new ambulance vehicle.

A total of $120,000 was funded to purchase the new vehicle, which is equivalent to the ones used by Ambulance Victoria.

The ambulance has been decked out, sign painted and fitted to ski patrol purposes to be utilised during the winter season.

The Hotham Ski Patrol had been using an older vehicle to transport passengers within

the resort and Dinner Plain and recently, they saw the need to upgrade their ambulance due to the poor state of their current one which then motivated them to fundraise and seek grant funding.

Full-time Ski Patroller David Wilson said that the hard efforts of the Ski Patrol volunteers and the support for the Ski Patrol had been overwhelming and a big reason behind their successful fundraising.

“A big part of getting the funds was a result of our fundraising event, the ‘Big Gig’ which we hold every August and this year it’s on

August 12 at The General Store and at that event we auction off a variety of goods,” Mr Wilson said.

“The new ambulance means a much better and more reliable vehicle to transport our passengers and it will be more economical for the Resort Management Board to service and look after and much easier for patient transport due to more room and greater accessibility.”

In addition to the new ambulance ensuring that guests at Mt Hotham are safe, the Mount Hotham Medical Centre received funding for their afterhours medical services.

The funding will enable a daily after-hours medical service throughout the winter period from 5pm onwards and on weekends.

Craig Jenkins of Ambulance Victoria said that the funding would help keep the ambulance service on the mountain to respond to the most severe medical emergencies, while the medical centre will be able to relieve minor injuries.

“It helps us out in terms of having a facility available so we can take patients there to be seen afterhours, rather than taking patients through to Wangaratta

which might need something as simple as an x-ray and would take us off the mountain for a minimum of five hours.

“It gives us the ability to keep local for injuries on the mountain, rather than leaving the mountain, so it’s a lot of pressure off us as a service,” Mr Jenkins said.

“So many things happen after hours, whether its people slipping on ice or people with illnesses that come out overnight and all sorts of things that we can deal with here if we have the doctors and medical centre available,” Mr Jenkins said.

Mt Buller captured in striking exhibition THE DRAMA of clouds lifting through the valley, ice-baked chairlifts twinkling in the morning light, the spray of fresh snow as a skier makes a perfect turn; it is these brief and breathtaking moments in the mountains that we try to capture and hold in our minds. Tony Harrington has spent most of his life doing just that, using a camera, and will share a special collection of these moments in an exhibition titled “Buller & Beyond” which will be on display at Mt Buller’s Alpine Central in August.

The exhibition pays homage to Mt Buller and visitors will revel in a diverse collection of large scale photographic prints that showcase the mountain in her many moods and from some unique angles.

“The mountain is always changing and there are always new ways to see it,” explains Harrington.

“I think that’s what we all love about this place. In different light, at a different time of day or from a different viewpoint, Mt Buller can often surprise us. I hope there is a little something in this exhibition for everyone.”

◆ The Alpine High Country of Australia provides a back drop for incredible photography and internationally acclaimed photographer Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington has been capturing stunning images such as this one of Toby Flemming taking a clean line down ‘ridge line’ at Mt Buller for many years and images such as this and more will be on display at the ‘Buller & Beyond’ exhibition.

Harrington has been travelling the world creating inspiring photographs for decades with a focus on big mountain action photography and big wave surf photos and his work is well known and has graced hundreds of magazine covers and articles.

Last year Mr Harrington decided to spend more time at Mt Buller, establishing The Photo Shop and for the first time is opening up his vast photographic collection for sale as fine-art quality prints.

As the exhibition title implies, the focus is on Mt Buller, however with Harro’s deep love for the

ocean and gypsy lifestyle, he couldn’t curate a collection without including highlights from surf destinations and other mountains.

“I am continually pulled between the ocean and the mountains and drawn around the world by storms … I hung a few surf images in my shop last winter along with a handful of my favourite images from Chamonix, Jackson Hole and Alaska and realised how many people connected with those photos, so I had to weave a few in to this exhibition.”

The photographs in the collection will be mainly large size prints, produced as acrylic facemounts which is a highquality and striking style that allows the prints to glow and appear to float off the wall.

Be prepared on the roads this winter THE Transport Accident Commission is urging Victorian motorists to plan ahead, eliminate distractions and ensure their vehicles are safe when driving in and around the snow this ski season.

Another bumper season is underway at the state’s popular resorts, including Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, with people travelling from across Victoria and interstate to hit the slopes.

TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore said motorists should take into account several factors to ensure a safe journey including weather, road conditions, fatigue, distractions and their behaviour.

“Victoria’s snow fields are among Australia’s great drawcards and they attract huge numbers of visitors from far and wide each year,” Mr Calafiore said.

“You must ensure that you have the correct tyres, chained if necessary, and they are in good condition, along with your brakes, and ensure all lights are working so they can be switched on in low visibility,” he said.

“We want everyone to travel to the mountains and get home safely and the choices people make and condition of their vehicles will go a long way towards a safe ski season on our roads.”

Geelong Grammar School ramps up Interschools training with new off-snow program

By Alexandra Rouse SKI & SNOWBOARD AUSTRALIA  THIS year Geelong Grammar School is ramping up their training for the Victorian interschools competition before students hit the snow.  Using Ski & Snowboard Australia’s (SSA) new school program with modified snowsports equipment designed for use in the school gym, Geelong Grammar is giving students an advantage by practicing their skiing and snowboarding fundamentals at school. “The Little Shredders program has given the students a more hands on, realistic approach to their training and they’ve thoroughly enjoyed the activities� said Marshall Radcliff the Head of PE & Sport, Snowsports Coordinator at the Toorak campus of Geelong Grammar School. By adding Little Shredders to their dryland training program, Geelong Grammar School students like Skye in year six, Heidi in year two, Asher in year three, and Bobby in year two (pictured), can practice their balance, coordination and agility with games and activities with the aim to have fun.

Snowracer gets a facelift for winter WITH over 100 ski and snowboard competitions and events planned across five alpine resorts this winter, 2017 is set to be an exciting year for Australian domestic snowsports.

As any parent of a budding young athlete knows, it is often a minefield to find information on upcoming events and locate results once the events are over.

There can also be uncertainty as to when a child is due to be at the start gate, making for a daunting exercise.

This year finding information about snow sport events and

registration will be easier than ever before. Parents will be able to know exactly when their child is on the racecourse and they can keep track of their scores online from anywhere!

This year everything one needs to know about Australian ski and snowboard events is going to be in one place on one website – www. snowracer.com.au Ski & Snowboard Australia’s (SSA) Snowracer is being relaunched as the premiere source for all snowsports event information this winter. The new website will now have the

most up to date snowsports event information and registration, as well as live results and live scoring, upgraded recreational snowsports insurance cover and snow fitness information.

Athletes and parents will have access to real time event information and start lists, with live results as they happen.

A key element making it possible to track competitor’s results via the live timing system is an athlete’s ‘Snow ID’ which gives all competitors a unique identification number.

Over the last four years all

Interschools participants have received a Snow ID and SSA are working in partnership with race organisers to ensure all competitive snowsports participants have a Snow ID going forward.

In time, this will build a results archive where athletes can see their race history in a centralised location – similar to the FIS website.

Snowracer will continue to offer free competition insurance for non-medical expenses to the value of $500, covering items such as entry fees, lift tickets,

lost accommodation or car repatriation. However, after reviewing feedback from the Snowracer membership, SSA is also introducing Snowracer Gold in 2017.

Snowracer Gold is an optional insurance upgrade for recreational skiing and snowboarding, travel and salary protection.

SSA has worked closely with the insurance providers to develop a customised insurance product, which is relevant to Australian ski and snowboard families whether competing or not.

Disabled Wintersports Australia guide training at Hotham DISABLED Wintersports Australia (DWA) carried out their annual DWA guide training at Mount Hotham recently and the two-day program taught guides how to assist people with disabilities out on the slopes and offered specialised training with certificate recognition.

Adaptive skiing equipment includes sit skiing and three tracking for amputee skiers, vision impaired skiers and many other types of disabilities.

The new guides familiarised themselves with the adaptive sports equipment out on the slopes and learnt how to guide a vision impaired person on and off ski lifts.

DWA’s Resort Service Coordinator Philip Knight said that being a guide was a rewarding experience and a chance to be part of a “fantastic community of people”.

“We have people with very different needs – in fact everyone is unique, so we have to consider carefully the match up with a guide and the type of adaptive skiing equipment they will need,” Mr Knight said.

“Some of our clients may have a cognitive disability and they don’t require any equipment, just a DWA guide to be with them to support and motivate them and help them achieve their objectives.”

Mt Buller & Mt Stirling Resort Management THE NUMBER of Aussie skiers and boarders venturing into our alpine backcountry has been on the rise for the past 10 years, if not longer and I am a perfect example of the kind of skier looking for more to explore. After two years living in the Monashee’s of British Columbia, Canada, I returned to Australia with a thirst for lines outside of our traditional resort boundaries.

Having now called Mt Buller home for the past ten seasons, I’ve been pretty impressed with the volume of backcountry, side-country or slack country as some call it, that lies within reach for those prepared to, “earn their turns”.

However, I’m always going to be a little secretive of these locations, as after all, on a good day I’m going to want to poach these spots myself!

What follows is a guide to what Mt Buller has on offer, beyond the lift lines and hopefully if you’re up to it and a powder day is on, you just may find some lines in the back country.

*Beyond the Summit Smacking you in the face even as you approach Mt Buller is the staggeringly rugged West Ridge. Hosting runs with names like Frenchman’s, Main Street, Chutes 1, 2 and 3 (or are there 4?) and Moonlight Ridge. All of this terrain will be showcased during Mt Buller’s backcountry free ride event ‘Buller X’, which is the brainchild of Aussie big mountain and surf lens guru Tony Harrington.

There are many other steep and gnarly lines beyond the Mt Buller summit depending on snow levels, and it’s a relatively short but steep skin back up to Howqua chair to cut another lap.

However, I kid you not, terrain out there is serious and there are many memorial plaques as a cold and hard reminder of those who have lost their lives venturing into this terrain.

*Mt Corn Hill Well it’s just Corn Hill, let’s be honest.

Rising between the Mt Buller Village and Howqua Gap, Corn Hill is quite simply a great place for an easy skin to gain some stunning vistas, either back towards the Mt Buller Village or across the Howqua River valley across to the majestic Bluff, Mt Cobbler and the Buffalo Plateau. From here you will find some more mellow terrain, with runs off all faces in good conditions.

*Mt Stirling As Australia’s only fully patrolled backcountry playground, Mt Stirling is a very unique mountain for Aussie snow adventurers. Best accessed from Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) but also a very easy skin from the Mt Buller village via Howqua Gap. TBJ is well equipped as a kickoff point for an authentic alpine backcountry experience with Ski Patrol, ski shop and the Stirling Café located here. TBJ is even better on your return when you can grab a coffee and brownie from the café and warm up around the open fire.

Mt Stirling is dotted with numerous alpine huts, making over-nighting a breeze, all stocked with cut firewood nonetheless and even serviced by two web-cams (TBJ and Bluff Spur hut) giving

you instant images of the current snow conditions. There are kilometres of crosscountry (XC), snowshoeing and alpine access trails, making for safe travel if heading towards the summit and beyond.

It is what lies beyond the summit that is easily the jewel in the crown, Stanley Bowl.

Located on the eastern flank of Mt Stirling, Stanley Bowl offers a true alpine bowl experience, devoid of pesky Snowgum’s, which allows riders the opportunity to slay tracks well into the tree line below. Simply ski (or board), skin, repeat, it’s that good!

Dugout Bowl is another popular run, again accessed once you have gained the summit, offering great lengths of runs at a slightly gentler gradient than Stanley’s.

Or for the truly adventurous, continue onwards towards Clear Hills and spend a night at Craig’s Hut, made famous in the movie ‘The Man from Snowy River’.

Make sure you complete a trip intention card if departing from TBJ, and always check in with the head of Stirling Patrol, Dave “Danger” McCoombe or one of his colleagues to get an update on conditions.

*Play it Safe In closing can I simply say, “Know your ability and the conditions!”

Ensure you are well prepared and have the required equipment and experience to attempt any type of backcountry adventure in our Aussie Alpine wilderness.

Why ‘The Wang’s’ the place to be WHEN you stop to consider the venues at which Australia has had its greatest Olympic success, you may conjure up the pool in Melbourne, the track in Sydney or velodrome in Athens.

By late February next year you could well be adding another, more obscure one: Bokwang Phoenix Park, in Pyeongchang South Korea.

It sounds like a mouthful now (in fact I’ve already mounted a campaign for Australians to shorten it to ‘The Wang’) but if you love snow sports the odds are you’ll get to know it soon enough.

Host of all freestyle and snowboarding events at the 2018 Winter Olympics The Wang is set to be a field of glory for Australian athletes at these Games.

It’s hard to find a medal for Australia outside of this small, purpose-built ski area but that isn’t as bad as it sounds because there promises to be plenty on offer in the one spot.

At last count I had a potential 13 athletes across six freestyle and snowboard disciplines that could contend for medals.

When you consider that a quarter of a century ago an Australian hadn’t even stood on the dais at a Winter Olympics it is quite the achievement.

I’ll save the analysis for a column closer to the Games but I can say having visited the site during the test events of February this year it promises to be an excellent host.

Initially I had my doubts before I went to

By THE SNOW GAUGE DINING: You can find a good restaurant if you look.

The Wang because there’s so little English information online about it. Yet a few days there had me and seemingly most of the Australian athletes feeling it would deliver.

About two and a half hours from Seoul (soon to be shortened when the train line most of the way there is complete towards year’s end), The Wang is far from a classic ski destination. There are only 14 marked runs, the snow depth compares poorly to Japan and like the rest of South Korea you can’t ride off-piste.

But the weather stays largely quite cold (-10 overnight with few thaws during the day), hotels are right on top of the action, viewing is superb and the likes of aerial skier Lydia Lassila and halfpipe champion Scotty James have already given their facilities the thumbs up.

Certainly there’ll need to be a few tweaks: the roads around the complex were still pretty rough, and food options were limited (Korean barbecue or Korean barbecue anyone?). Still, that’s what test events are for and to my eye they appear more ready than the last three Winter

Olympics hosts at the same time.

The Korean people are warm, have a good sense of humour and you get the feeling they support and want these Games to work.

That’s often a big part of the battle.

With a friendly time zone (just two hours behind) these Games will make for great afternoon and evening viewing for Aussies – or you may want to consider going there yourself (See: www.cosport.com for ticketing and accommodation details). History could be awaiting you if you do.

They have the only mobile real estate office in Australia, which can be sent to any location and will ensure that if a customer can not come to the mountain, then

the mountain will come to them!

For the winter, the highest real estate office in Australia will be positioned at the top of the village chairlift at Mount Hotham and the mobile office will also attend property investment shows and other events that call for a look at alpine property.

The van which is adorned with striking images from the Mt Hotham village is a real talking point and Principal Paul Englisch is delighted with how the mobile office has tuned out.

Three questions you need to ask when buying an Alpine apartment

By Dan Flynn, (Partner) and Emma Einsiedel, (Senior Associate) TRESSCOX LAWYERS OWNING an apartment in the snow is a dream for many keen skiers and boarders. Waking up in your own apartment to see the snow-covered gum trees or returning after an exhausting day on the slopes and falling into your own bed – this is the dream. But romance aside, buying an alpine property is a commercial decision and we have the top three questions you need to ask!

What am I buying?

Buying an alpine apartment is different from traditional sale and purchase of land because the mountain is (mostly) owned and controlled by the Government. It is called ‘Crown Land’ and is leased to companies and individuals on a long-term leasehold basis.

The most typical form of ownership on the mountain is for a company to hold a lease from the Government (head lease), often referred to as a lessee company, and individuals purchase shares in the company, which entitles them to a sublease of

an individual apartment. You should note, the term of your sublease will only be for as long as the company’s lease, so always check how long is left to run on the head lease.

Many newer subleases can now be registered with the Land Titles Office to provide a clear and safe security.

A most important reason to know what you are buying is finance. The type of leasehold arrangement for alpine property has a significant impact on whether banks are prepared to lend. A registrable sublease is encouraging for the banks as they can register a mortgage in a transparent and secure manner.

What are the outgoings?

When purchasing an apartment within a body corporate, you must carefully consider the building’s outgoings including: electricity, upcoming repairs, insurance and management fees and what proportion of those you will be required to pay. Heated driveways and footpaths can be a luxury, but also expensive to run.

Always request a copy of the annual budget for the building. This will detail insurances, land tax, maintenance budgets,

management fees and other expenses you will be liable to contribute towards.

Investment returns - what is the rental arrangement?

As well as a wonderful lifestyle choice, an alpine apartment can be a good source of rental returns.

If the site lease is held by a lessee company, it will have a company constitution, which governs the operation and management of the building.

Often, these constitutions will regulate how you may sublet your apartment to holiday and seasonal tenants.

Some properties have compulsory management and letting agreements, some allow combinations and some are simply own your own. If the building does not have a compulsory letting arrangement, we recommend taking your time to consider which letting arrangement or management suits you best.

If a compulsory management agreement is required, check for overall management fees, and whether these are inclusive of third party agents and suppliers.

Skitube – The only way in to Charlotte Pass during the snow season. When you arrive at the Skitube Terminal at Perisher Valley, go to the Charlotte Pass Oversnow counter.

Drive and bus - Park your car at Mt Beauty at the base of Falls Creek and travel up to the resort in a bus.

Fly - Canberra Airport is a 2.5 hour drive from Perisher and a 40 minute flight from Sydney. Several regional airlines operate regular services.

Selwyn Drive - 1 hour from Cooma, 2 hours from Canberra, 500 km from Sydney and 550 km from Melbourne. Follow the Hume Highway to Gundagai then turn off to Adaminaby.

Thredbo Drive - 2.5 hours from Canberra, 6 hours from Sydney and Melbourne.

The roads are clear for most of the year, but when big snow-falls hit, chains may be required. Chains can be hired in Jindabyne and Khancoban.

Bus - Daily coach services between Canberra and Cooma. A number of companies provide regular weekend services from Sydney and Canberra to the snowfields.

Fly - Most major airlines service Canberra Airport from major Australian cities and there are shuttle transfers to and from the resort.
