have declined in numbers as online purchasing options mushroom. Yet from an investment and technical viewpoint, snowsports equipment surely needs the expert advice provided by remaining retail outlets in cities and at resorts. The international resorts roadshows have been through Aussie cities drumming up business for Northern Hemisphere destinations. From all accounts bookings have been brisk, confirming Australians’ love affair with skiing overseas in spite of the dollar’s decline in value. The sport recently lost a person whose influence and contribution stretched back much of the last 30 years. Dr Rodney Moss will be remembered for his love of skiing, Victorian ski resorts, ski clubs and the VSA. He chaired the VSA incredibly well as a business and strong discipline based state sporting body, including supporting interclub racing, Interschools and grass roots participation. He was instrumental in the campaign to save the VSA’s Australian Skiing Magazine ( which evolved out of Falls Line Magazine) from closure due to financial constraints and led the association during a period of growth in services including a commercial booking service. Rodney was a member of the Fall Creek Resort Management Committee and his council was highly valued. He championed skier and ratepayer representation, plus equity and fairness in state and national ski administration, and resort leases and services. He will be sorely missed. We are told the biggest change in our time will be global warming, so it was reassuring to receive solid snowfalls at most resorts for Opening Weekend; it’s a great start to the season. In this issue you will find our Resorts Guide with prices and services to assist booking your ski trip. Also take a look at our feature interview with Olympic star Torah Bright, this year’s Ski and Snowboard Awards and the latest resort news. WELCOME to Alpine News, the longest published snow sports mag in Australia – now in its 32nd year. It’s been a journey of change reporting the thrill and achievements of the sport, the alpine living experience and environment, and camaraderie of the snowsports fraternity. Resorts have been transformed from villages under the control of state departments to head leases or statutory boards of management. Lift companies have changed hands as investors, super funds and specialist tourism management firms try their hand at making money in our short snow seasons. Just this year saw the US resort Vail buy Perisher. We have also seen many ski clubs morph in to apartments and their traditional role of recruiting new skiers decline, along with the annual ‘week or two at the snow’. Resort visitation is now for shorter stays but the experience has been greatly enhanced with modern living and entertainment facilities. Ski lift comfort and speed have improved markedly; lift systems have multiplied at resorts and are now supported by hundreds of hectares of snowmaking fed by water from high altitude dams. The sport has changed too. From the early days of interclub and state events where raw talent was supported by state ski associations, and racers made their way to international and Olympic events, today the sport is nationally highly organised. It has the support of government funding that ensures professional coaches and support staff drive athlete pathways and success. Now its high stakes of funding by results, with young athletes in all disciplines recruited into race clubs, most having participated in the successful states interschool championships. This has resulted in Australians from diverse backgrounds, and a mainly hot and dry country, winning medals in all discipline events of World Cup and Olympics Ski and snowboard gear is very high tech in design and construction these days. It has added a real excitement factor to the experience. Ski shops

COURAGEOUS SPIRIT: Torah Bright has written a heartfelt autobiography about some of the big issues in life. PHOTO: Thredbo
Torah writes about tough times in memoir BY VANESSA BACON-HALL
E
VERY professional athlete relishes the opportunity to become the best at what they do, to reach the literal top of their sporting mountain and for Torah Bright that time was at times shadowed by depths of despair and she candidly and bravely talks about this and a lot more in her book; It Takes Courage. Torah’s autobiography talks about the break up of her marriage, the death of best friend, Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke, her relationship with her brother and coach, Ben and the highs and lows of being a professional and successful athlete. And of course there’s lots of talk about snow and Torah took the time to answer some questions for the AAN community. AAN: The AAN community knows a lot about Torah Bright, can you tell us, is there something that we wouldn’t know or would find surprising? TORAH: What you see is what you get and as you can tell by reading below... I’m an open book. AAN: Earliest memory of the snow in Australia? TORAH: Mum and Dad had us kids on snow before we could walk. My
earliest memory would be Friday Flat at Thredbo. Mum would pull me a little way up with a rope and I would ski down... over and over and over. AAN: Earliest memory of snowboarding? TORAH: I remember I was in the lift line of Basin T-bar when I saw a bunch of snowboarders. I was with my little sister Abi and we began to make some cheek with them, as I am told we did with everyone back then. We started calling them all sorts of different names, none of which I will repeat. My first real memory of snowboarding was when I was 11 years old and I had my first chance to try snowboarding. I got a lesson with my brother Ben and we picked it up quite quickly. I remember tailing behind Ben on Front Valley, trying to do what he did. We had a more freestyle approach to snowboarding and that is what sold me. Looking back I saw the mountain differently. It wasn’t now about how I got to the bottom or the fastest anymore, it was about what features does the mountain offer and how can I be playful on the mountain... from there, we never looked back. AAN: You took the brave step of writing an autobiography last year, tell us, how did it feel to literally be so honest?
TORAH: Yes, it’s funny really, writing an autobiography was not something I was itching to do at all. The opportunity came to me at a time when I was saying yes to everything, it was my ‘yes’ year. Honesty and being open are big in my general life philosophy. I wanted it to be real and raw or I saw no point in doing it at all. AAN: In your book, you talk very openly about some pretty big things, such as the death of your close friend, depression and the breakdown of your marriage, what was the hardest to write about? TORAH: None were particularly hard to write about, as time heals all. I have always taken the time to work and better myself personally from life hardships. Throughout my life I have learned so much from others that were willing to be open and share with me, that I felt there was no other way than to write something real. Life is crazy beautiful, but also delivers some heavy pains. Everyone has a story to tell and this was mine. Plus sharing is caring. AAN: Was it cathartic to write about these tumultuous times? TORAH: I seem to be able to get to a place quite quickly where I understand why things happen the way they do,
I accept, I find (even if very small) the positives and attract more in doing so. Writing the book was a beautiful reminder to me of how wonderful my family is, how even as a kid I never seemed to waste a day and how lucky I am. AAN: And to finish on a lighter note, what’s in store for Torah Bright for the rest of 2015 and will you get in any turns on Aussie snow this winter? TORAH: I have just arrived back in Australia for the 2015 winter. I will be back at Thredbo as their winter ambassador riding and training for the northern winter and encouraging those who have not experienced the magic of snow to come and do so. I also have an event coming up on Sunday July 5 at Thredbo; The Torah Bright Mini Shred. This is an event for 18 and under, boys and girls, where skiers and snowboarders can come ride a mini shred park with myself and my friends. It will be a blast, I can not wait.
Torah Bright’s autobiography, ‘It takes courage’ was released in November 2014 and is available now from all good book stores and online retailers.

Olympic Winter Institute athletes exceed medal targets BY ANDREW PATTISON OLYMPIC Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) athletes have had an impressive Northern Hemisphere winter, highlighted by a number of medal performances at the World Championships and World Cup level. After the completion of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, the Australian sporting system underwent major change in a number of areas in response to the implementation of the Federal Government’s Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE) strategy and a new direction for Olympic sport. Australia’s Winning Edge is a collaborative effort led by the Australian Sports Commission with key partners in the sport sector, detailing Australia’s game plan for moving from world class to world best. Clear national performance targets have been set, with the aim for Australia to be a top 15 nation on the Olympic Winter Games medal tally, and to contribute to the target of 20 plus World Champions annually in both summer and winter Olympic sports. The OWIA has made changes to its sport program mix in order to align with the new AWE strategy of the single measurement of high performance success is the number of medals achieved at a single annual ‘benchmark event’, most often being the World Championships in the
WINTER DRIVING
years leading into the four year measurement at the Olympic Games. The most significant changes include the ceasing of Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship programs, the creation of an OWIA ‘Pro Athlete Park & Pipe’ opportunity which supports Australia’s leading halfpipe and slopestyle athletes in their skiing and snowboard careers, and the decision to not continue the operation of a Skeleton sliding sports program for women. OWIA athletes have responded well to the new sporting system and expectations against a predetermined medal forecast, exceeding the benchmark targets in year one of the new Olympic quadrennial. In total 14 medals were won by OWIA athletes in World Cup and World Championship competition. Most encouragingly, a number of emerging athletes achieved first time international and podium success. Aerial Skiing Laura Peel became Australia’s first sporting World Champion of 2015, when she won the gold medal in Kreischberg, Austria during January. Laura is the fourth Australian woman to win an aerial skiing World Championship title and follows in the footsteps of aerial skiing legends, Kirstie Marshall (1997), Jacqui Cooper (1999) and Alisa Camplin (2003). Danielle Scott also had an outstanding season finishing the
If you have had a traction problem when driving up to, or more importantly down from, your lodge or apartment at your resort or have had a driving safety issue on mountain roads it will be because of the type of tyres are fitted to your vehicle. Due to their width, rubber compound and tread pattern, high performance summer tyres provide unacceptable grip for low temperature snow driving. High performance, high speed rated tyres and cold winter alpine temperatures, snow and icy roads are NOT compatible because this type of tyre was never designed by the tyre maker to be driven in low ambient temperatures or in snow and icy conditions. It is also important to note that the recent advancements in electronic driver aids, such as ABS, ESC and traction control do not provide more traction. These electronic aids only prevent drivers from over braking or overpowering the available traction of their tyres. The only thing the driver can do to increase traction, to actually get more grip and safer control, is to install winter/snow tyres. The safety issues that occur during extreme weather conditions, are compounded not only on the road conditions but also by the effect of the cold weather on vehicle tyres. The tread compound of high performance summer tyres that are fitted, becomes like "hard plastic" at below 7° thereby losing the flexibility needed to build up sufficient grip for braking, for starting traction and for cornering. The real key to winter tyre performance is, ironically, not the traction to accelerate, even though grip to drive through deep snow may be the first thing we think about with snow tyres. Instead, the real key is braking performance. The ability to stop is actually more important than the ability to go, and it is under these “exit event” conditions that winter/snow tyres excel. Here is one way to determine how much tyre grip is available for your vehicle when driving in challenging conditions on your snow trip........ When it is safe to do so, at a safe speed, and, make sure that no one is

season ranked a team high third in the world. Danielle won two World Cup medals which included her first World Cup victory in Moscow, Russia. Renee McElduff also won her first ever World Cup event, after taking gold in Lake Placid, NY, USA, during February. Alpine Skiing During February, the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships
took place in Vail-Beaver Creek resort in the USA and Greta Small provided Australia’s highlight of the Championships when she finished 18th in the Combined event. Mogul Skiing Britt Cox secured World Championship bronze with the best performance of her career. By finishing third, the 20 year old became just the second Australian female World Championship mogul skiing medallist. Matt Graham had a breakthrough season, finishing the season ranked fifth in the world after winning the first World Cup medals of his career. In total Matt won two silver medals and one bronze medal. Park & Pipe 20 year old halfpipe snowboard athlete Scotty James secured his first major title, claiming a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships. Scotty declared his intentions in the final by putting down a highly impressive performance in his first run. It was this run of 91.50 points that the rest of the field were unable to equal. Two time Olympic halfpipe medallist Torah Bright, finished in sixth place at the World Championships, after qualifying in third. The following week in Aspen USA, Torah had an impressive bronze medal performance at the Winter X-Games. Slopestyle skier Russ Henshaw became a dual World
Championship medallist when he picked up the silver at the 2015 World Championships. Russ skied brilliantly throughout the event putting down three solid runs above 90 points and scoring just 0.8 of a point less than the gold medallist. Ski Cross Both Anton Grimus and Sami Kennedy-Sim recorded top-10 World Cup performances, after advancing to the semi-final stage in Arosa, Switzerland. Snowboard Cross Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin finished the season ranked second in the world, the highest ranking by an Australian in 2014-2015. Chumpy’s second place ranking was achieved following back to back podiums, including one victory, in the final two races of the season. Belle Brockhoff had a consistent and much improved season, advancing through to the semifinal stage or better in every event she contested. Belle was one place from the podium on two occasions, finishing fourth at both the X-Games in Aspen and in the final World Cup of the season in La Molina, Spain. Jarryd Hughes was also close to landing on the podium for the second time in his career, finishing fourth in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, when teammate Alex Pullin won the event, the first time in history two Australian athletes have featured in the same Snowboard Cross final.
close behind you, apply the brakes firmly until the wheels lock up and the ABS is activated. Keep the brake pedal pressed down until the vehicle stops completely. This will give you a clear indication of the grip available at that particular point in time. You can repeat this test to continually monitor grip in different conditions.
SNOW CHAINS
There can be issues when diamond pattern snow chains are used on very wide high performance 2WD or AWD "summer" tyres. On summer tyres snow chains will grip to the snow/ice surface of the road but the tyre can slip or spin within the chain even when they are correctly fitted to the tyre. The problem is compounded by the camber of the road, the weight and torque of the vehicle and the amount of tread on the tyre. The problem is worse when the vehicle has been parked at the resort because of the low ambient temperature makes the tyres harder and therefore has even less grip to the chain. This will help you understand why 'spider chains' and ladder chains have now been banned for use at Mount Hotham Snow chains fitted to summer tyres on the front wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but can not assist with lateral stability. Because of the inadequate grip on the rear tyres the vehicle will oversteer and under braking the ABS system will be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. The problems are always worse when driving down hill than up hill. Snow chains fitted to summer tyres on the rear wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but can not assist with steering or lateral stability. Because of inadequate grip on the front tyres the vehicle will not 'turn in', it will understeer and under braking the ABS system will be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. VSA hands Victorian sports role to national body THE VICTORIAN Snowsports Association (VSA), which has operated for over 60 years, has decided to hand over its Victorian sports administration to the national body, Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA). VSA president Rob Anderson told VSA’s AGM that efforts to achieve additional state government funding had failed. In addition, he said the VSA and SSA had been unable to reach agreement regarding the terms of a
new Services Agreement similar to other states “Accordingly, in the interest of sport, we have reluctantly agreed with SSA that it take over the Victorian aspects of the sport,” Mr Anderson said. Mr Anderson advised the VSA will continue as a consumer advocate body, as well as concentrating its efforts on Alpine Resorts stakeholder issues to Government for a better deal for all users. “We will change our constitution
but retain our state body status for these activities. The VSA sub-committee ‘The Alpine Resorts Working Group’ (ARWG) will continue to lead the push to make life for snowsports enthusiasts and clubs more affordable in the Alps, and help provide strategic advice to Government.” The ARWG which is already recognised by the Government consists of representatives from all Victorian resorts.

STRONG CONNECTION: American ski resort Vail has acquired Perisher in a deal that will enable local skiers the opportunity to take advantage of great North American deals. PHOTO: Perisher
Vail Resorts take over Perisher
THE American resort Vail which is located in Colorado, has become the proud owners of Perisher ski resort in a deal that came in a littler under $180 million. With the acquisition of Perisher, Vail Resorts has become the only mountain resort company to operate world class ski resorts on two continents. The acquisition includes the resort areas of Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega. The ski school, accommodation lodgings, hospitality, retail/rental and transportation operations were also included in the deal. Perisher holds a longterm lease and licence
with the New South Wales Government under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, which expires in 2048 with a 20 year renewal option. The acquisition will be a win for international snow lovers with ‘epic’ benefits being extended already between the two resorts for existing ‘Freedom’ pass holders. On the Perisher Freedom Pass with Epic Benefits guests will be able to ski and ride at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, Park City and Canyons in Utah, and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in the Lake Tahoe region of California and Nevada.
Chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts, Rob Katz said that venture was a significant milestone for the company. “This acquisition is part of Vail Resorts’ continued strategy to drive season pass sales and build loyalty with guests from around the world. “We see this as a ground-breaking acquisition that will dramatically enhance the connection between our company and Australian skiers and riders and we also see the acquisition as a natural fit, as Perisher is the Australian leader in innovation and guest experience - both hallmarks of Vail Resorts,” Mr Katz said.

Mt Baw Baw Alpine Power of 10
NOT everyone skis, so at Mt Baw Baw this season there will be 10 daily activities on offer for both children and adults that can be enjoyed ski free. A taste of some of the new and exciting activities are listed below: ii Frosty Flicks - weekly open air cinema in the Marketplace featuring short movies with hot beverages and themed food. ii Light & Sound laser shows - fresh snow glistens under laser lights during the evenings, creating a unique atmosphere and alpine experience. ii Photography hikes - slip on a pair of snowshoes and snap a few shots of stunning snow gum forests, abundant wildlife while enjoying the peace and quiet of freshly fallen snow. ii Snowshoe to the summit - snowshoe with no skiing skills required, if you can walk, you can snow shoe. ii Where is Frosty the Frog? Children will enjoy themed educational environmental walks where a guide will encourage exploration of the alpine environment. ii Snow sculpting - get creative and learn how to snow sculpt in a fun and relaxed environment. ii Snow biking - with professional mountain biking instructors resident on the mountain the perfect opportunity exists to try an adrenaline filled activity under the guidance of the excellent instructors. Further enhancing the experience
of guests to the mountain in 2015, visitors to the alpine village will be welcomed immediately upon arrival, at the village gates with access to guest services and ski hire. The integration of the guest information centre and ski hire will ensure seamless service with visitors on the slopes quicker and more comfortable than ever. Baw Baw is also keeping children happy with the launch of a new snow play park located right in the heart of the village. The park will encourage snow play activity with equipment including igloos, ice sculptures and frozen themed activities. Frosty the Frog, Mt Baw Baw’s mascots will lead the fun on weekends as he skidoos through the Village, occasionally with the howling huskys sled dog team providing families with memorable photo opportunities. Baw Baw is also happy to announce that the ‘howling huskys sled dog’ team will be on the mountain every day of the 2015 winter season. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the backcountry trails of Mt Baw Baw by dog sled. Visitors can experience the thrill of a dog sled ride with the pulling power of eight highly trained dogs and their musher, while children will be enchanted by the experience of a snow shoe tour with experienced husky leaders.

IF NATURAL snowfalls allow, 2015 will see more ‘enhanced natural terrain’ grooming at Charlotte Pass. The resort has many wide open pistes and they will be using their innovative grooming approach to enhance existing natural features such as ‘roll overs’ and ‘natural drops’. If you want to explore the mountain and still enjoy a little air under your feet, be on the lookout for the new ‘enhanced natural terrain’ features during the 2015 season. Also in 2015, Charlotte Pass will be introducing a one and a half hour private lesson in place of the one hour private lesson. Finally, one of the sweetest deals to be announced by the resort is that children four and under get to ski FREE.

Australian Alpine News 2015 17
Easier & Safer way to Stay Dry the number 1 waterproofing & aftercare products in Australia
EVERY year the features and size of the various terrain parks seems to get bigger and bigger and the riders having a go in the park, younger and younger. There’s some new and exciting features in park land for younger riders and here we have a look at what’s new.
Baw Baw
Hotham
THE Burton Riglet Park is a snowboarding haven for little ones, where children as young as three can experience the thrill of snowboarding in Hotham’s Burton Riglet Park. The park is a specially designed area of easy terrain that features small bumps, ramps, rollers and toys that teach children the fundamentals of balance and stance on a snowboard. Burton Riglet Park is for children aged three to six years, giving them an introduction to snowboarding (also providing snowboard equipment) in an easy, fun and safe environment.
Perisher
PERISHER’S Terrain Park managers Charles Beckinsale and Doug Graham are renowned for their innovative park designs and creative flair when they’re designing Perisher’s parks each year. They see the whole process through from start to finish and you will also see them riding their creations throughout the season. The team at Perisher have made access to the parks super easy with a T-Bar conveniently placed next to the PlayStation Slopestyle Park. This means that with an average two minute lap, riders will be able to squeeze in heaps of laps each day. Perisher’s world class parks and
pipes attract the best Australian athletes like Russ Henshaw, Scotty James and Nate Johnstone who use the area to train for some of the most mind blowing events like thePlayStation Slopestyle Championships, held at night in the PlayStation Slopestyle Terrain Park, which is the exact park that riders could be designing. Perisher are asking riders what would their park look like? Would you have rails, jumps and a pipe, or would you design something completely new and different? Show Perisher what you can dream up in this year’s Design a Park Competition.
Buller
THE team up at the Frank MBP terrain park have been busy over the summer building and designing new features. The boys have been hard at it constructing fresh jibs for the enjoyment of the many upcoming 2015 riders. Some features have included three new flat boxes for the beginner area, which is located at Koflers. Be sure to keep up on all the news by checking out their dedicated face book page athttps://www.facebook.com/pages/ Mt-Buller-Park/114527935225855
AS THE snow accumulates so does the park count. When a sufficient depth is reached a total of three parks will be built up at Baw Baw. New for 2015 is the transformed Kicker Park which is located on Tank Hill. Previously a beginners and ski school slope, the team at Baw Baw have recently transformed this small hill into a terrain park with permanent features for beginners and the like to enjoy. Featuring a range of small flat boxes, combo boxes, rails and jibs, Kicker Park is for the entry level rider looking to throw a few board slides and 50-50s in a fun and progressive environment.

Questions to ask when buying a snow apartment BY DAN FLYNN & TESS HAUSER Tress Cox Lawyers
OWNING an apartment in the snow is a dream for many keen skiers and boarders. Waking up in your own apartment to see the snow covered gum trees or returning after an exhausting day on the slopes and falling into your own bed this is the dream. Romance aside, buying an alpine property is a commercial decision and we have the top three questions you need to ask. 1. What am I buying? Buying an alpine apartment is different from traditional sale and purchase of land because the mountain is (mostly) owned and controlled by the government. It is called ‘crown land’ and is leased to companies and individuals on a long-term leasehold basis. The most typical form of ownership on the mountain is for a company to hold a lease from the Government (head lease), often referred to as a lessee company, and individuals purchase shares in the company which entitles them to a sublease of an individual apartment. You should note, the term of your sublease will only be for as long as the company’s lease, so always check how long there is left to run on the head lease. Many newer subleases can now be registered with the Land Titles Office to provide a clear and safe security. A most important reason to know what you are buying is finance. The type of leasehold arrangement for alpine property has a significant impact on whether banks are prepared to lend. A sublease that can be registered is encouraging for the banks as they can register a mortgage in a transparent and secure manner.
2. What are the outgoings? When purchasing an apartment within a body corporate, you must carefully consider the building’s outgoings including: electricity, upcoming repairs, insurance and management fees and what proportion of those you will be required to pay. Heated driveways and footpaths can be a luxury, but also expensive to run. Always request a copy of the annual budget for the building. This will detail insurances, land tax, maintenance budgets, management fees and other expenses you will be liable to contribute towards. 3. Investment returns - what is the rental arrangement? As well as a wonderful lifestyle choice, an alpine apartment can be a good source of rental returns. If the site lease is held by a lessee company, it will have a company constitution which governs the operation and management of the building. Often, these constitutions will regulate how you may sublet your apartment to holiday and seasonal tenants. Some properties have compulsory management and letting agreements, some allow combinations and some are simply own your own. If the building does not have a compulsory letting arrangement, we recommend taking your time to consider which letting arrangement or management suits you best. If a compulsory management agreement is required, check for overall management fees, and whether these are inclusive of third party agents and suppliers. Any other questions? TressCox Lawyers are able to help and advise with any of your proposed alpine interests and transactions.

Prime development options on Mt Buller IT HAS been six years since any land leases have been offered on Mt Buller and this year sees two being released. Both sites have huge potential for development, one commercial and the second residential. Site one (237) is situated on Summit Road in a prime position and is already partially excavated. A huge north facing site of
1863 square metres, it offers magnificent uninterrupted views to Mt Stirling and the ranges beyond. Expressions of interest in developing the site could include car parking, residential, retail outlets or even a hotel. Situated on one of the main roads of the mountain it has a bus service at the kerb and is close to all village facilities. The second offer (119) is
situated on Stirling Road on the corner of Chamois Road and is 1506 square metres in size and is easily accessed. This site is zoned for residential development and has flexible uses such as lodges, town houses or apartments. It already incorporates an older style building which needs to be replaced, but could be used in the short term until redevelopment permits are granted. This site is also well situated, is on a village bus route and is within walking distance to restaurants and the village square. Managing agent for the ARMB, Mark Adams said this site could suit a consortium or syndicate looking for a great investment on the mountain. “Site 119 could be a great development site for either a syndicate or club and they
could do a really affordable project there. “The larger, ‘trophy site’ offers versatility in the zoning and innovative schemes are being welcomed by the board,” Mr Adams said. “The commercial zoning uses include car-parking, multiresidential or even a hotel.” Building guidelines are expected to be followed, along with lease arrangements, but long leases on both sites are envisaged. Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management chief executive John Huber said that the release of these development sites offers two excellent opportunities to invest in the future of Mt Buller. “The resort continues to go from strength to strength, with a comprehensive Resort Master Plan that each year sees continual improvements across the mountain.
“These types of land releases are rare, and we are confident that they will attract much interest, particularly coming off such a fantastic snow season in 2014 that has seen confidence in the industry grow. “With a booming winter season that sees the highest visitation of all Victorian alpine resorts, combined with a world-class bike park as part of our summer offering, these sites represent an excellent opportunity for private or commercial investment,” Mr Huber said. Expressions of interest are sought on both lease sites with resort management seeking innovative ideas. For initial enquiries contact Mark Adams at Mark Adams Real Estate by phoning (03) 96464230; Mobile: 0419 858007 or Email: mark@markadams.com.au.
PRIME POSITION: With uninterrupted views across to Mr Stirling this once in a lifetime chance to secure a sound lease and develop into a thriving accommodation centre or other business is open for expressions of interest.
NESTLED IN: Sitting nicely on the side of an easy sloped block on Sitrling Road, this good sized block would accommodate a new lodge or apartment building - subject to approval.
ON A CLEAR DAY: The view from the Summit Road lease site is nothing short of magnificent and on a clear day you can see forever.
Buying and selling a business in the snow BY DAN FLYNN & EMMA EINSIEDEL Tress Cox Lawyers
SNOW Business is an important part of the Victorian economy, with the 2014 winter snow season contributing $668 million, with 775,469 visitors across all resorts. According to the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council, visitor numbers increased on average by 32 per cent compared to the 2013 season. Buying a business in an alpine environment can be stimulating, rewarding and the advantages of running a snow business are often personal, strategic or a step in a certain direction. When you buy a business, you are buying
the goodwill, the plant and equipment and the stock. As part of the sale, there are various transfers to be arranged, depending on the business. For example, for a cafe or restaurant, you need a transfer of food premises registration and liquor licence. For a retail business, you need to organise trading accounts with suppliers. For other businesses, you may need to transfer statutory licences or approvals. There are also aspects such as transfer of employees, transfer of business name, and in some cases transfer of bookings, deposits and/or contracts held. Each business is unique
and careful thought must be given to the transaction to ensure that the buyer receives good title to the business and that the parties are not left with unforseen costs or exposure after settlement. One thing that most sale and purchase of snow businesses have in common is the transfer of premises. In an alpine environment, as ownership of a building is usually by way of lease, the business owner usually holds a retail sub-lease (or sub-sublease) of the premises. The business owner will need to obtain the landlord’s consent to any transfer of the right to occupy the premises. Outgoings payable under a retail sublease
would usually include a proportion of the head lease charges on the lease. In addition, there may be other considerations to consider on transfer, such as compliance with CFA regulations. If you are buying into, or considering buying into an alpine business, it is important that the different requirements of alpine arrangements are known and explained to you. If you want to sell your alpine business, or are looking to buy an alpine business, it is recommended that you seek advice from lawyers who understand business and leasing and in particular, the different requirements of snow businesses and alpine leasing.

Cross-country boost at Lake Mountain CROSS-COUNTRY skiing is getting a boost at Lake Mountain in 2015 with the Fischer Nordic Demo Centre. Developed in partnership with Fischer Sports, the Nordic Demo Centre will offer a premium learn to ski experience from beginner to expert while providing a dedicated base for the Fischer Race and Demo Centre, the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The establishment of the Nordic Demo Centre will greatly enhance the profile of cross-country skiing at Lake Mountain, improve learning opportunities at the ski school and bring the ski school operations
in line with those of European ski resorts. Cross country skiers will be able to view the Fischer ski and equipment retail range on site, with a fantastic range of demonstration equipment available ensuring that skiers can try before they buy, a rare opportunity for skiers in Australia. In 2015 a number of new snow shoeing trails will be opened, making Lake Mountain the perfect location for snow shoeing adventures from short hikes to all day adventures. Snow shoeing provides children and adults with the perfect introduction to snow sports without the need to have perfected the art of skiing.

NSW INTERSCHOOLS Snowsports welcomes the challenges and excitement of 2015 following on from last year’s record event entries. Interschools encourages students of all abilities and levels to compete for their school in a competitive snowsports competition. School students can compete in up to seven snow sports disciplines for alpine and cross country skiers and snowboarders. The event focuses on fun in skiing and snowboarding at the regional championships and this is all set in a framework of friendly competition. As the competition steps up to the state and national stages, the level of competition and the difficulty of the courses also steps up, but always with a sense of fair and enjoyable competition. Last season, 2930 school students participated from 285 schools. Both Perisher and Thredbo will host the championships that will see 6000 entries across the four regional championships; the Subaru QLD Championships, Travelplan Ski Northern NSW Championships, Travelplan Ski Sydney Championships and the Subaru ACTSouthern NSW Championships. The Interschools Championships is a starting block for further snow sports competition and has seen 20 Olympians start their career at Interschools competitions. During the northern winter, we enjoy hearing results from former and current Interschools participants who are representing Australia overseas. Grammar, had a highly successful season claiming three World Cup medals in moguls skiing. Earlier this year, Graham received his first World Cup medal with silver in Deer Valley, USA. This was followed up with another second place in Val St Come, Canada. At the last event of the season for Graham, he took out the bronze medal in the dual moguls. At only 20 years of age, we look forward to cheering Matt on for future World Cup seasons and the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Korea. A rising star is current Interschools competitor from Shore, Ben Tudhope, who competes in para-snowboarding events overseas. In 2014, Ben was the youngest athlete to represent Australia at the Winter Paralympics. This northern season, Tudhope was the youngest Australian to compete at the X-Games. Heading to Buller in July BY MARGARET BROOM
Up to 800 competitors are expected for Interschools
President SASKI
BY WENDY OLSEN
THE SOUTH Australian Interschools competition will be held at Mt Buller this year, during the second week of our school holidays from July 13 to 16. We receive entries from large school groups to individual family groups and all are welcome to enjoy the week of activities. Please check out our website, www.saski.org. au for more information on the Interschools and get your entries in ASAP. Regretfully, we announce the finish of our long running “Snow Gear Sale”. SASKI has been organising this event for 32 years and it allowed people to buy pre-loved gear. I would like to take this opportunity to extend many thanks to our longstanding organisers Barry Blakebrough and Graham Brown for their input. Finally, I hope everyone enjoys their skiing this winter.
THE YEAR started very well for SnowSports ACT, with local aerials skier Laura Peel taking out the World Aerials Championships in Austria in January. Laura has been performing well on the World Cup circuit for the past few years and placed 7th in Sochi and has had many podium finishes on the World Cup circuit The new title is well deserved and we look forward to seeing Laura at the next Olympics in Korea in 2018. Laura becomes the fourth Australian woman to win an aerial skiing World Championships title. In April, Laura was awarded the joint title of Australia’s ‘Snowsports Athlete of the Year’ with Scotty James at the Ski and Snowboard Australia Awards and along with athlete and coach recognition at the awards, two school awards were presented to those participating in the Interschools Snowsports Championships across Australia. Canberra school, St Clare’s College won the national school award for Outstanding Achievement for Small Schools. Congratulations to St Clare’s College. Melbourne, with Marist College in Canberra being nominated as the NSW/ACT representative. Athletes have been preparing for the local season long before the first snowfalls. The ACT junior cross country out of season training program has been busy with new members joining each week. The program provides a fun and safe ski training environment with highly qualified coaches. The training is based on all
round athletic development and technique improvement using roller skis, athletics and games. The regular sessions were mostly held at Stromlo Forest Park and the Australian Institute of Sport and SnowSports ACT also ran a pre season training fitness program targeted at Interschools and junior athletes in term two this year. We are expecting 800 competitors to compete in the ACT/Southern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships from
July 29 to 31 at Perisher. The popular ACT Schools Cup is in its 6th year and is introducing cross country as a third discipline, along with Alpine and Snowboard GS. The inaugural event will be held on July 12 and school students can compete as individuals and/or part of a team of three. The event is run similar to Interschools where students compete in their Interschools division (year at school) and the top three teams and individuals are recognised. Team results from the event will go towards the overall ACT Schools Cup point score, which awards the best male and female primary and secondary schools after the Alpine and Snowboard events are held on September 6. For more information on all our events and programs, please visit snowsportsact.com.au.

BIG SNOW AT
Australian Alpine News 2015 27
BIG WHITE
CANADIAN winters are all about snow, especially at British Columbia’s Big White Ski Resort. The resort is located 58 kilometres outside of Kelowna, which is located within the interior of British Columbia. Recently awarded a 2015 Certificate of Excellence from the travel site TripAdvisor, Big White is a favourite among snow travellers the world over. Winners of the prestigious award are selected based on the quality, quantity and recency of reviews posted to the site over the previous year. If you are considering a trip to Canada, here are a few top reasons why you should consider Big White for your winter wonderland holiday of a lifetime. It’s the SNOW: With an average of 7.5 metres of Mother Nature’s finest, feather light, champagne powder falling annually, a truly spectacular world of snow ghosts, snow bowls, and mountain beauty is created. Big White boasts Canada’s largest ski in/out resort: With exceptionally affordable prices and over 17,000 on mountain beds, Big White has a huge variety of accommodation to suit every budget and the best thing of all, is that it’s all ski in, ski out. Big White is closer than you
think: From Australia, it’s an easy flight to Vancouver and then a 45 minute jet service transfer to Kelowna in the snow laden Okanagan Valley. From the Kelowna airport there are frequent shuttles that will whisk guests up to where the action is. Flights to Vancouver don’t come any easier than those offered by both Air Canada and Qantas who are now flying non stop from Sydney. Winter wonderland holiday: Big White boasts over 118 runs, five powder bowls, 14 express chairs, and a gondola. For the family, the resort features a world class ‘TELUS’ terrain park, Canada’s highest elevation skating rink, snow coaster adventure park, alpine night skiing, dogsledding, snowmobiling and an ice climbing tower. Added to this is also a good number of slope side restaurants. Epic winter weather and elevation: Big White has a base elevation of 1755m, an average temperature of -5 C and views that are literally breathtaking. The moderate mean temperate creates the ‘perfect storm’ for mountains to whip up their famous Okanagan champagne powder.
FAMILY FUN: Big White is ideal for a family snow holiday.

Ski Europe at the mighty Dolomites BY MARIO LONGHITANO THE DOLOMITE Mountains of northern Italy has emerged as a popular destination for many Australian skiers in search of new horizons. This spectacularly beautiful region offers the largest lift-served skiing in the world, with an enormous and modern network of 450 ski lifts, 50 ski areas, 45 resorts and to make things easy, all of this is available on one lift pass, the ‘Dolomiti Superski Pass’. Some of the betterknown resorts in the region include Cortina, Corvara, Val Gardena, Arabba plus

DOLOMITES
Campitello and Canazei in the Fassa Valley. Sydney based Dolomites Ski Tours (DST) has been conducting ski holidays to the Dolomites for 30 years and the company enjoys a loyal following of skiers who return year after year, after discovering the beauty of the Dolomites region. DST offers independent or guided ski holiday packages and they also offer the exciting opportunity of an overnight ski safari throughout the vast Dolomites alpine region. One of the most popular opportunities within the Dolomites is the famous Sella Ronda route, where skiers tackle anything between 45 to 75km in a
day, without catching the same lift twice. Best of all, this experience is open to any strong intermediate skier and up. According to Dolomites Ski Tours, Italy’s blend of mountains, snow, culture, shopping and irresistible food makes the Dolomites experience an unforgettable one. Getting to the Dolomites has never been so easy, with a Qantas/Emirates flight to Venice, and from here a representative from DST is on hand to meet their client/s and provide them with a direct transfer to the Dolomites. For more information, go to: www.dolomitesskitours. com.au.

IN early June Qantas announced they were re-introducing flights from Sydney to San Francisco commencing December 23 and American Airlines will be commencing a daily service from Sydney to Los Angeles from December 19, which will make a lot more seats available and ready to be filled. This is a good time to book for resorts in North America. Aspen is still one of the favourites for the Australian skiers and they have some great earlybird deals for accommodation, with a lot needing to be booked by the end of August in order to secure discounted rates or free nights. This year Aspen has introduced a fantastic new ski pass called ‘Ski 30’, which gives pass holders up to 30 consecutive days of skiing. If the pass is booked by June 30 the price works out to be only $21 (USD) per day. The price will increase after June 30 and again on October 30. We have been sending lots of our clients to Telluride, which is in south west Colorado in the scenic San Juan Mountains. The skiing is fantastic, varied and there is a mountain village and a wonderful historic town at the foot of the mountain with great bars and restaurants.
There is an easy drive between Telluride and Aspen so it gives the opportunity of two great resorts. Vail resorts still have their great Epic passes, which we can sell directly to our clients and this year Park City is one of the resorts that can be skied. Park City and the Canyons Resort are combining this coming ski season to create the largest single ski and snowboard resort in North America and a new eight passenger gondola will connect the two mountains. Another great resort to ski in 2016 will be Jackson Hole as they are celebrating their 50th anniversary, not only will you get some great skiing but there are also a lot of fun activities planned in order to celebrate the milestone. The Canadian resorts also seem to be popular for the next season with lots of early bookings. Whistler again has some fantastic specials and if you book by the end of June you can get up to 50 per cent off the lodging, after this there is up to 40 per cent off if booked prior to the end of August. Whistler has a fantastic kids and teenage program as well as lots of after ski activities to keep everyone entertained. Other resorts to look at for great value and excellent skiing would be Panorama, Silver Star, Big White and Sun Peaks and for the expert skier don’t forget about Revelstoke and Kicking Horse as these really offer some great challenging skiing.
