ONCE again the northern winter saw some great results from Australia’s snow sports athletes and many were saluted at the annual Ski & Snowboard Australia Awards in May. Matt Graham took out the 2016 Ski and Snowboard Australia Athlete of the Year award after an outstanding season which saw him finish second overall in the season’s Moguls World Cup. His season highlight at Deer Valley, Utah was his first World Cup Gold medal. Graham took the top award from Aerials athlete Danielle Scott, who had a very successful season to also finish second overall in the World Cup, and Snowboard Cross athlete Belle Brockhoff, who won her first Gold medal at the final World Cup event of the season and finished ranked third overall. Alpine Skier Mitch Gourley was named Para-Snowsports Athlete of the Year after an outstanding season that saw him achieve nine World Cup podium finishes and third on the World Cup standings overall. In addition the Snowboard Cross team took home three World Cup Gold medals, as well as three silver and one bronze. Three different Australian Snowboard Cross athletes won at World Cup and X-Games, with Aussie athletes taking home gold in the Men’s and Women’s event at the same World Cup

Gourley finishes 3rd in World Cup rankings AUSTRALIAN para-alpine skier Mitch Gourley finished the World Cup season on a high, placing third on the overall rankings. A successful run of events over the 2015/16 season saw him on the podium nine times. Gourley who hails from Geelong, was born a congenital arm amputee below the elbow and competes in men’s standing para-alpine events.

A dual Paralympian, Gourley went into the World Cup season with goals of being a more consistent performer in the speed disciplines and to win a medal in Downhill. This goal was achieved when he took silver at the World Cup at the ski resort of Tignes in France at the end of January. “That was a huge day for me in Tignes,” Gourley said. “It’s not easy to be a four-

event skier from Australia as training options are always thin and you’ve got to call in a lot of favours. “I think I came last in my first ever World Cup Downhill race, so it was a long road,” Gourley said. Gourley went on to win silver in Downhill again at the final World Cup of the season in Aspen, finishing the season second overall in the discipline. The 24-year-old said that this

was his biggest achievement of the season. “Getting on the podium a couple times and second in the discipline title was pretty unexpected for a lot of people and something I’m really proud of.” After struggling with form over the last few years, Gourley’s hard work and

persistence has paid off. Gourley will now enjoy some well-earned rest in Canada before returning to Australia in the middle of the year for the domestic season. Managed by the Australian Paralympic Committee since 1994, Ski and Snowboard Australia took carriage of the para-winter sports program in November 2015.

Moving documentary shows

LYDIA’S ‘WILL TO FLY’ BY VANESSA BACON-HALL

WE ALL know the name ‘Lydia Lassila’ and the amazing career that she has had as an aerials skier and the new documentary ‘The Will to Fly’ shows her path to Olympic glory and beyond. However, the documentary is much more than that, it’s a moving testament to the strength of character that Lydia has and the utter determination she had to follow her goals. This is a film not just for the sport and snow lovers, it’s a movie for anyone who believes in the power of dreams and the determination it takes to be the best. Lydia took the time to answer questions for the Australian Alpine News. AAN: How do you feel overall about the film? LL: I feel really proud of it. It’s a great film with strong themes that will inspire and motivate others to follow

their dreams. To be able to have a positive affect on others is truly humbling. AAN: How did the film come about? LL: I was approached by ex teammate Katie Bender who was working on films in LA and had a strong passion for sports documentaries. I filled her in on my ambitions to return to aerial skiing as a mum and to be the first woman to perform a quad -twisting -triple somersault and she thought that would make a great story. AAN: You’ve made it no secret that you wanted to win an Olympic gold medal and when that was not going to happen with gymnastics, what did you originally think when you were told you should become an aerial skier? LL: The whole idea of skiing was completely foreign to me so I really didn’t know what to expect. But as soon as I started, I was hooked and loved every minute. Then my competitive spirit kicked in

WINTER DRIVING

If you have had a traction problem when driving up to, or more importantly down from, your lodge or apartment at your resort or have had a driving safety issue on mountain roads it will be because of the type of tyres are fitted to your vehicle. Due to their width, rubber compound and tread pattern, high performance summer tyres provide unacceptable grip for low temperature snow driving. High performance, high speed rated tyres and cold winter alpine temperatures, snow and icy roads are NOT compatible because this type of tyre was never designed by the tyre maker to be driven in low ambient temperatures or in snow and icy conditions. It is also important to note that the recent advancements in electronic driver aids, such as ABS, ESC and traction control do not provide more traction. These electronic aids only prevent drivers from over braking or overpowering the available traction of their tyres. The only thing the driver can do to increase traction, to actually get more grip and safer control, is to install winter/snow tyres. The safety issues that occur during extreme weather conditions, are compounded not only on the road conditions but also by the effect of the cold weather on vehicle tyres. The tread compound of high performance summer tyres that are fitted, becomes like "hard plastic" at below 7° thereby losing the flexibility needed to build up sufficient grip for braking, for starting traction and for cornering. The real key to winter tyre performance is, ironically, not the traction to accelerate, even though grip to drive through deep snow may be the first thing we think about with snow tyres. Instead, the real key is braking performance. The ability to stop is actually more important than the ability to go, and it is under these “exit event” conditions that winter/snow tyres excel. Here is one way to determine how much tyre grip is available for your vehicle when driving in challenging conditions on your snow trip........ When it is safe to do so, at a safe speed, and, make sure that no one is

and I just wanted to be the best. AAN: You worked so hard to win that gold medal in 2010 at Vancouver and your rise to the top of the sport was incredible, but where did that strength and determination come from? LL: I think it’s always been in me even as a

young gymnast. My dream was to win the Olympics and I’ve always loved the Olympic movement and what it stands for. The idea of being the best in the world at something was always a big driver for me, so motivation was never a problem despite a few bumps in the road along the way.

AAN: Not content with being the best female in the world, you then set out to conquer the jumps normally reserved for the male aerialists, is this still a move you are happy you went with in the final at the Sochi games? LL: Absolutely. I had the opportunity to do it and I have never regretted

that decision. I’ve always wanted to raise the bar in women’s aerials and prove women were just as capable of doing the same tricks as the men. It was a personal ambition since I started the sport and just as important as winning an Olympic gold medal. AAN: What’s in store for Lydia for 2016? LL: Well, I’m a busy mum of two energetic boys, we’re building our home at the moment and I also run my own business called BodyICE- we specialise in ice and heat packs for injuries. I’m also happy to say that we just got the approval for a world class water ramp training facility to be built in Lennox Head. I have been and will be heavily involved with that facility and I’m back in training and contemplating a 5th Olympics. The Will to Fly is currently showing in selected cinemas across Australia.

close behind you, apply the brakes firmly until the wheels lock up and the ABS is activated. Keep the brake pedal pressed down until the vehicle stops completely. This will give you a clear indication of the grip available at that particular point in time. You can repeat this test to continually monitor grip in different conditions.

SNOW CHAINS

There can be issues when diamond pattern snow chains are used on very wide high performance 2WD or AWD "summer" tyres. On summer tyres snow chains will grip to the snow/ice surface of the road but the tyre can slip or spin within the chain even when they are correctly fitted to the tyre. The problem is compounded by the camber of the road, the weight and torque of the vehicle and the amount of tread on the tyre. The problem is worse when the vehicle has been parked at the resort because of the low ambient temperature makes the tyres harder and therefore has even less grip to the chain. This will help you understand why 'spider chains' and ladder chains have now been banned for use at Mount Hotham Snow chains fitted to summer tyres on the front wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but can not assist with lateral stability. Because of the inadequate grip on the rear tyres the vehicle will oversteer and under braking the ABS system will be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. The problems are always worse when driving down hill than up hill. Snow chains fitted to summer tyres on the rear wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but can not assist with steering or lateral stability. Because of inadequate grip on the front tyres the vehicle will not 'turn in', it will understeer and under braking the ABS system will be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. Again the problems are always worse when driving down hill than up hill. j/51d02455/31-15

Successful 2015/2016 season as podium contenders emerge

BY ANDREW PATTISON Olympic Winter Institute of Australia AUSTRALIA has continued to excel at the highest level of winter sport during 2015-2016, with a number of athletes making significant gains in establishing themselves as medal capable performers at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea. After the completion of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the Australian sporting system underwent major change in a number of areas in response to the implementation of the Federal Government’s Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE) strategy and a new direction for Olympic sport. National performance targets have been set via performance at an annual Benchmark Event (BME). The aim for Australia is to be a top 15 nation on the Olympic Winter Games medal tally, and to contribute to the target of 20+ World Champions annually in both summer and winter Olympic sports. In the absence of World Championships in year two of the Olympic quadrennial, the BME focus was largely on designated World Cup events. In total, 13 medals were won by Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) athletes at the World Cup level, with three medals - gold, silver and bronze also won at the X-Games in Aspen, CO, USA. Seven Australian athletes were ranked in the top ten on the end of season World Cup standings, including three in the top three in the world. The BME for the freestyle skiing disciplines of mogul skiing and aerial skiing was the World Cup event in Deer Valley, UT, USA. OWIA/NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) mogul skier Matthew Graham had an outstanding season, taking home three World Cup medals, including the first gold medal of his career in Deer Valley. The win makes Graham only the second Australian mogul athlete to stand on the top tier of the podium at the World Cup level. Graham finished the season ranked second

season in Beijing, China. Samantha Wells recorded the first podium of her career, taking silver on the first day of World Cup competition in Deer Valley, after landing a new jump, full-double full, for the first time in an event. The BME for Snowboard Cross was determined to be the end of season World Cup standings. Belle Brockhoff had a breakthrough season, finishing the year ranked third in the world, with Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin closely behind in fifth.

Brockhoff made history becoming the first Australian female to win a snowboard cross World Cup at the final event of the season in Baqueira Beret, Spain. Adding further to the significance of the win, was that teammate Chumpy Pullin, also recorded victory in the men’s event, marking the first time Australia has won both the ladies’ and men’s events at a World Cup. Jarryd Hughes spearheaded another historic first for Australia at the X-Games in Aspen,

leading a one-two finish with Chumpy Pullin closely behind in second place. Cameron Bolton came agonisingly close to securing the first World Cup podium of his career in Montafon, Austria, placing fourth at the opening event of the season. The BME for Snowboard Halfpipe was the World Cup held in Sapporo, Japan. Kent Callister finished the event as the best performed of the Australian contingency, placing sixth with Nathan Johnstone in tenth. Holly Crawford made it three top ten performances for Australia, finishing in eighth. The standout performance of the season came from Scott James, who landed on the podium for the first time at the X-Games in Aspen, taking home the bronze medal. Dual Olympic medallist Torah Bright only competed once in 2015-2016, finishing second at the Laax Open in Switzerland. An unfortunate concussion in training at the X-Games forced Torah to sit out the remaining events in the season. Slopestyle skier Russ Henshaw was set for a big season after narrowly missing the podium in fourth place at the US Grand Prix Event/World Cup in Mammoth Mountain, CA, USA, but suffered a season ending shoulder injury shortly after. Competing in the BME/ Olympic Test Event for snowboard slopestyle, NSWIS rider Jessica Rich finished in an encouraging eighth place in PyeongChang. The most consistent Australian ski cross performer was Sami Kennedy-Sim. KennedySim made a strong start to the season, placing sixth in the opening World Cup in Montafon, with another three top eight semi-final results also recorded. Anton Grimus timed his best performance of the season perfectly, finishing in ninth place at the Olympic Test Event for PyeongChang. Australia’s leading alpine skier, Greta Small, made a successful return from ACL knee surgery and with the injury now behind her, Small is looking forward to resuming training and competing at the highest level.

Saski move to Falls

Thredbo going ‘green’

BY MARGARET BROOM President, SASKI SASKI is the incorporated Snowsport body registered in SA and its main function, now, is to conduct the South Australian Interschool Snowsport Championships, which it has run successfully for 22 years. The committee has been very busy over summer, reviewing the hosting agreement for the event and has decided to move the event to Falls Creek. This presents an exciting opportunity to strengthen the historical connection between Falls Creek and the South Australian snowsports community and, more critically, sustain and grow the event. The actual races are designed for all abilities, so first time skiers and snowboarders can start lessons on the Monday and be able to participate in the races later in the week. Any SA school student can enter (including home schooled students), as they do not need to be part of a formal school trip or group. The championship week takes place on July 18 to 22 and is scheduled for the second week of July school holidays for subsequent years. Races are scheduled for the Wednesday and Thursday but there is an exciting event program for the entire week. The opening ceremony will be held on Monday evening, snowboard presentation Wednesday evening, alpine and school winners presentation on Thursday evening, and a fun slalom race on Friday morning for participants and families/teachers. Adults will not be left out either, with a parent/teacher cocktail party on Tuesday night. Registered entrants can also access a discounted lift and lesson package, although these need to be booked by July 4 via the forms on the SASKI website. These lesson packages will include practice on the designated race course. The SA Championship also has a new major sponsor for 2016, Telstra Business Centre Wayville, which has naming rights to the event for 2016. SASKI welcomes their generous support. Visit SASKI’s web site for further information on the SA Interschools and student entry info: www.saski.org.au.

ONE IN 10 skiers to Thredbo now offset their travel emissions through a world-first carbon offsetting program. Over the last two years, Greenfleet and Thredbo Resort have encouraged skiers to purchase a tree for $4 when they order lift passes; with each tree offsetting the emissions generated on the journey to and from the slopes. Greenfleet’s CEO, Wayne Wescott, said that the number of people taking up the offsetting program at Thredbo was significantly more than those who offset their airline flights. “Skiers are naturally passionate about their environment, and this world-first program is helping people to take personal and practical action on climate change while preserving the beautiful backyard of Kosciuszko National Park,” Mr Wescott said. Greenfleet, which has planted more than 8.6 million trees around Australia, uses the money raised to plant forests at sites in and around Thredbo, Jindabyne and on the journey to and from Sydney. These forests not only capture carbon, but also restore degraded land and create new habitat for threatened species. Thredbo general manager, Jordan Rodgers, said that in just two years their customers had help to plant more than one thousand trees in the area. “This is a meaningful way for skiers to give back to the land they love, and protect their sport at the same time,” Mr Rodgers said.

Snowmaking expansion at Hotham

MORE than $4.4 million has been invested into expanding snowmaking coverage at Hotham for season 2016 and beyond. The expanded snowmaking will cover more trails on Heavenly Valley, which comprises the great intermediate terrain serviced by the Roadrunner lift, and the beginner terrain in the Summit area. The snowmaking expansion will increase the production area from 25 hectares to 33 hectares, with 100 Techno-Alpin fan guns covering the resort.

Hotham is also happy to announce that kids’ pricing will be extended to those under 18 years. Children’s pricing was previously up to 15 years with an additional youth age price category for those 15 to 18 years, which has now been removed. This means older kids can continue to ski at kids’ prices until they are 18 years old. Kids’ pricing applies to lift passes and rentals from Hotham Sports and Falls Creek Sports. The mountain renowned for their steep terrain also has

some pretty impressive deals and classes on this year and first to take note of is the ‘Friday afternoon club’. A weekly two hour ski and snowboard improvement session for women which is designed for intermediate and above skiers and snowboarders. Buying online will save guests to Hotham up to 15 per cent. Simply purchase lift passes more than 14 days in advance to receive this great saving. Hotham is also making it easier for guests to access untracked powder with their

‘Snow Kat’. The eight seater snow kat will take guests up to Golden Point from the top of Spargos, meaning that out of reach powder will now be that little bit closer and this service will be free with any valid lift pass. Another great FREE addition with any valid lift pass is ‘First Tracks’. Skiers and snowboarders can get first tracks on the mountain after a snowfall when Heavenly Valley chairlift opens at 7.30am, Wednesday to Sunday during winter.

Expanded Kosi club at Charlotte Pass

CHARLOTTE Pass ski resort is happy to announce that they will be expanding their snow making to take in Gutheries High Speed Poma this winter. As long as conditions allow they will be pumping out the white stuff in this area. 2016 will see yet another expansion of the ‘Kosi Kids club’, which is an all day kids ski program. The program will now be available to children from three to 12 years in age. This program is the perfect way to start your child’s love of skiing and the hand picked

instructors will have them up and down the mountain in no time. For the kids that like to race, the kids’ standard race will be a permanent fixture every Wednesday, weather permitting. This race gives the little ones the chance to show off their skiing and boarding skills. Children are looked after at Charlotte Pass with children four and under able to ski for free. Proof of age is required for this special free pass. Once again, ‘Onesie Wednesday’ is happening at the little resort and

everyone is encouraged to wear their favourite onesie on Wednesdays throughout the season. Don’t be surprised if you see elephants, giraffes and tigers skiing and boarding on Wednesdays. KOSI CLUB: Kids love learning how to ski or board at Charlotte Pass. PHOTO: Charlotte Pass

Fat Biking a GO! at Falls Creek

SNOWPLAY FUN: A new tobogganing area will be open this winter at Falls making playing in the snow with the whole family even more accessible. PHOTO: Falls Creek

FALLS Creek have new outlets for food on the go this winter. Slalom Plaza and the Village Bowl will see new popup food vendors hit the sidewalk in 2016. Look out for Monster Fried Chicken and The Ice-creamery alongside Snownuts Donuts at Slalom Plaza, while the Easy Eats Food Van will take up residence in the Village Bowl. The Village Bowl will host a new area for tobogganing in 2016. The slope alongside the Gully Chair top station will now be reserved for tobogganing and this will be free to access for all those snow play enthusiasts. With fat biking popular at ski resorts around the world, Falls Creek is enhancing its reputation in mountain biking by maintaining several trails to be open to, ‘Fat Bikers’ this winter. These special bikes that have extra ‘fat’ tyres,

enable them to accommodate snowy conditions and they will be available to rent at the resort. Kids snowmobiling is also a go this winter and during peak periods the Village Bowl will feature a permanent kids snowmobile course, which will be perfect for thrill seekers aged 5 and up. Another great Falls Creek deal this winter is the special price for teenagers, where they will ski and snowboard for the same price as kids this season. The age limit for a kids’ pass has been increased to 17, previously only under 15s received the discounted price. The Teen Academy is also continuing and is the country’s only teenager specific snowsports school program, which means, there’s never been a better time to be in your teens at Falls.

Ski the world with Thredbo ‘Mountain Collective’ pass IN A Southern Hemisphere ski season first, Thredbo Resort and New Zealand’s resorts (NZSki) of Coronet Peak and The Remarkables in Queenstown, plus Mt Hutt near Christchurch, are now connected by one inclusive lift pass, as NZSki becomes the newest member of The Mountain Collective. The Mountain Collective is an unprecedented collaboration between the world’s best independent ski destinations in Canada, USA, Europe, Japan,

South America, Australia and now New Zealand. The addition of New Zealand will provide local skiers and riders with the best lift pass savings in the Southern Hemisphere by connecting Thredbo, Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Mt Hutt on one single pass. Mountain Collective member resorts include: Aspen Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Sun Valley, AltaSnowbird, Mammoth, Stowe, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Taos in

America. While Ski Banff-Lake Louise-Sunshine Village and Whistler Blackcomb make up the Canadian member resorts. There are also three Mountain Collective affiliate resorts including: Hakuba Valley in Japan, Chamonix Mont-Blanc in France and Valle Nevado in Chile. Existing premium season pass holders at Thredbo can now enjoy the benefit of a 50 per cent discount on single day lift passes at all full member Mountain Collective resorts in North America and

resorts in New Zealand. In addition to the benefits for Thredbo season pass holders there is also a Mountain Collective pass, which will allow Australian and New Zealand skiers and boarders to ride two days skiing at every other Mountain Collective resort around the globe - that’s 30 days of skiing all on one pass, including two days in Thredbo and two days at either of the NZSki areas. Snowplayers are also being looked after at Thredbo this year

with the resort giving people of all ages the opportunity to experience the snow without having to step into a pair of skis in the dedicated Snow Play Park. Continuing the initiative of introducing more people to the snow, the Thredbo Snow Play Park, gives snow lovers the opportunity to frolic, roll around and throw a snowball or two. The park is located in the village, at the Valley Terminal base station area and it will be open daily this winter.

The Boulders and the beautiful at Mt Buller

MARK Adams Real Estate welcomes all their clients back for season 2016. Mark has had a busy summer showing properties to his clients which has led to steady sales and also finalising the seasonal rentals on the properties he manages. The company has dramatically increased its market share since commencing Mt Buller real estate sales on the mountain in 1996 and is now ‘Leading the Way’. This year is their twentieth year trading as Mark Adams Real Estate, even though Mark and his family have been involved in alpine real estate from the 1960s. Just a few weeks ago Mark released to the public his latest website which is full of new features and functions and can be easily

viewed on a phone or tablet. One of Mark’s most exciting new listings is the Boulders building which is for sale as a whole and a listing like this has never been offered this way before. Currently owned by separate vendors, the two super house sized apartments, unit one and two are available to purchase in one line. With loads of space and large bedrooms, it could suit multi- generational families, extended families and just friends wishing to be next to each other in the same building but without anyone else. The great news is you don’t have to deal with a body corporate if you buy the building, as you are the body corporate. The layouts include separate entries to both

apartments plus a skier entry from the top doors, open fireplaces, balconies, magnificent views and additional living spaces in both properties. A total of three 4WDs can fit in the garage. Located on the Summit Rd, Boulders is positioned in a small enclave of only three other buildings and offers magnificent views, which are extremely unlikely to be ever built out. Boulders is only a two minute walk to the ski school and this location makes it easy to get the kids to the program on time. Should you have an interest, Mark Adams Real Estate will be able to organise a private inspection through both Boulders properties. Contact Mark on 0419 858 007

Alpine Brewery at Dinner Plain

DINNER Plain can lay claim to, ‘Australia’s highest brewery’, with the Blizzard Brewing Company crafting a variety of beers using some of the purest water in the land. The company brews with snow-melt, which is fresh and pure Victorian Alps spring water. Water is the main ingredient in beer, and theirs is the purest available. Pop in for a brewery tour and tasting any day of the week. Dinner Plain is not only a fantastic place to learn how to ski, with a gentle beginners slope, it is also very affordable. Unlike the other major resorts, there is no resort entry to the village and a family lift pass to

the Dinner Plain snow park is only $114 for two adults and two children. The snow park was new in 2015 and offers skiing, snow tubing and snow play in winter, and tubing on artificial snow year round. New light towers which have been installed for this winter, will bring night skiing and tubing to life on Wednesdays and Saturdays in peak winter season. The gentle slopes at Dinner Plain and fully automated snow making provide great conditions for learning to ski and snowboard in a safe and convenient location and once these are mastered, guests can progress on to the steeper slopes of Hotham,

located only 10km away. The Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours are now operating out of Dinner Plain, every day throughout winter and they have a range of new tours from half an hour around the village, to half a day over the mountain tops. For something a little different, try the new sunset tour- A Dash at Dusk. The Church Bar and Café is a new addition to the Dinner Plain Hotel from this winter and will be open from early morning with coffee and breakfast for those on the go. Throughout the day they will be serving Mexican inspired bar snacks and nightly will function as a bar.

Easier access at Perisher due to earthworks OVER at Guthega there has been a huge amount of work to improve the access from the top of Perisher’s newest lift, the Freedom Quad Chairlift back to Blue Cow. The area around the top of the lift has seen earthworks undertaken that has opened new terrain off the top of the Freedom chair. Guests will now be able to get off the chair and enjoy the skier’s right hand side of the chair, cutting back across Bloody Mary. On top of this there has been work at the top of Mother-in-Law that will provide better access from Guthega

back to Blue Cow. The work undertaken widens and levels the trail, and will mean far less snow is required to get the trail from Guthega to Blue Cow up and running during the season. Perisher will continue to provide additional convenience to snow play guests with the introduction of the new Tube Town Kiosk. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase delicious hot drinks and food while enjoying the thrill of Tube Town which is located right next to the Perisher Valley car park.

MT BULLER resort has an extensive snowmaking system of 244 guns to top up cover across the slopes and ensure more skiing days each winter. In 2016 eleven new fully automatic DB6 snow guns will come online and this will complete the automation of all the high pressure guns in their world class snowmaking system. This additional investment extends snowmaking to the bottom section of The Chute and tops up coverage on key runs including Wombat, Shakey Knees and Family Run. Mt Buller’s snow grooming team are eager to create some sweet corduroy lines with the addition of a new Pisten Bully 400 Winch Kat which is joining the fleet this winter. The bright red machine with heated windscreen wipers has a four tonne winch and most importantly it will help the groomers on the steep terrain like Howqua and the Summit. Happen to leave your gear at home or have friends coming along for the first time? Then head to Buller Sports and rent brand new gear this winter. There are 300 pairs of new Head

BYS rental skis in stock at Buller Sports Ski School and Horse Hill outlets, along with 400 pairs of fresh new ski boots, clothing and helmets. Mt Buller will also be better equipped to handle power outages, with Buller Ski Lifts rolling out an emergency power supply system to all snowmaking pumps which started over summer. This backup network supports consistent snowmaking even during power outages and is an important application for supporting firefighting resources at the resort in summer. On the mountain access to one of the most popular venues will now be easier, with the heated pathway up the hill to the ABOM extended right to the door this winter. The new heated access ramp and automatic doors will improve entry into this popular and busy venue for people in ski boots, wheelchairs and parents with prams. The ABOM has also had an update inside and it is definitely worth a look, if only to see if the rumour of another polar bear is actually true. EPIC: Perisher is the largest ski area in Australia and the resorts of Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega have some epic terrain for skiers and boarders alike and recent earthworks will make access even easier. Park award win for Perisher

PERISHER has again claimed the top spot, winning the Snowsports Industries of Australia (SIA) ‘Best Terrain Park at a Resort’ award for 2015. Winning this award for the third year running really demonstrates that Perisher’s PlayStation Terrain Park is the best Southern Hemisphere destination for the best skiers and boarders in the world to come and train at in their off season. Some of the names that were seen cruising around Perisher during the 2015 season include Joss Christensen (Ski Slopestyle Gold medallist), Sage Kotsenburg, Eric Willet, Oystein Braaten, Mark McMorris, Torstein Horgmo, Tom Wallisch, Stale Sandbech, Seb Toots, Bobby Brown, Jamie Anderson (Women’s Slopestyle Gold medallist), Jess Rich, Australia’s own Olympians Nate Johnstone, Scotty James and Russ Henshaw. It’s thanks to Perisher’s Terrain Park team, who dedicate themselves to creating such innovative features and designs, which brings the big names to Perisher. Terrain Park manager, Charles Beckinsale, who is internationally renowned for his innovative park designs and riding success, manages Perisher’s parks. “We’re really proud of the past season where we tried a heap of new things and really pushed the boundaries,” Charles said. Perisher CEO Peter Brulisauer said that due to the great work the terrain park team does, it was no wonder that the facility is truly world-class. Perisher will again host some of the best Slopestyle events this winter, including the Subaru Australian Junior Freeride Championships to be held in August.

MOST of the resorts have terrain parks that are available for the adventurous to test out their skills on jumps, boxes and rails and here we take a look at the new features and events being rolled out at some of the resorts this winter.

MT BAW BAW

The Battle @ Baw Baw, now in its tenth year has cemented its spot on the Australian freestyle circuit for both amateur and professional skiers and snowboarders. Returning on August 6, competitors will be battling it out on the infamous stair set for a share of $3000 in cash and prizes. That’s not the only thing hitting the Baw Baw terrain parks this winter, with the resort investing in a number of brand new stainless steel features over the summer months. These new features will allow for better hits and smoother slides and the more durable features will include a number of new rails giving the park crew the ability to deliver more creative and exciting set-ups than ever before.

PERISHER

Perisher’s PlayStation Terrain Parks are renowned for being the best in Australia and some of the most innovative parks worldwide. The Playstation Leichardt Terrain

Park is the leading park in Australia for intermediate riders to be able to build confidence and learn new tricks to help progress their skills. For this season, the Leichardt Terrain Park has undergone major improvements that have seen earthworks completed through May, just in time for winter. The park has been expanded, allowing for better flow through the park while also making it longer and providing more options for features that riders can hit. The expansions and improvements mean that more riders can experience a greater range of Intermediate Park riding, ranging through from lower to upper intermediate skiers and boarders. Other improvements made to the park this year include a new

entry point, which will allow for a better flow line into the jumps. The in runs to the jumps will be running down the fall making the take-off and landings smoother for all riders. The improvements mean less snow is required to make the jumps level and therefore can be opened sooner and stay open for longer.

THREDBO

After leading the crew in 2015 and 2016, Reuben Cameron returns as Thredbo Terrain Park manager and lead builder. Reuben learnt his trade at June Mountain in California before developing it further with seven seasons of monster Stylewars builds here in Oz. Big booters are his specialty - the 2014 and 2015

One Hit Wonder set ups are proof of that. Thredbo Parks’ second in charge, Mat Galina also returns for his third season, leading the day crew and setting the standard required. With a wealth of snow experience in Australia and around the world, Thredbo Parks has its own dedicated social channels. If you’re interested in what’s happening in Thredbo Parks, or you just like checking out sweet Terrain Park content, follow Thredbo on their facebook page.

FALLS CREEK

If you’ve never been in the terrain park before but would like to give it a try, Freestyle Fridays are for you. Every Friday Falls Creek’s Snowsports School instructors are on hand to offer free tips and instruction in the Panorama Terrain Park (on skier’s left of Drover’s Dream). New direction for ACT sports BY WENDY OLSEN SNOWSPORTS ACT has embarked on a new direction for 2016 in the hopes of becoming more relevant to the recreational snowsports community in Canberra and surrounding areas. A weekly blog and newsletter will be published and will feature stories to do with everything to do with snowsports. From tuning tips, travel stories, athlete interviews and resort information, to program and event updates. SnowSports ACT held two dryland training programs in the lead up to the snow season at Mt Stromlo in Canberra, with one for adults looking at getting fit for the season and one for junior athletes. A year round ACT cross -country (XC) program based in Canberra for junior athletes commenced in October last year

and the group is looking forward to the on snow component. Juniors can sign up for one to five days of coaching throughout the week depending on what level they are at. The Sunday sessions have been very popular to new participants of the sport and part of the training involves roller skis that simulate XC skiing. Thanks to the ACT Government for providing grants over the years to purchase roller skis for the program. A ‘Come and Try Cross Country Skiing Day’ will be held

event management teams, to finalise these new events. It will be exciting to see these new events in action, as the interest that has already been shown is significant. We are continually looking to improve all areas of the event experience from RFID timing, mobile compatible website design, improved scheduling and start time information, competitor gifts, individually engraved medals and best and most appropriate event course locations to name just a few. Our goal is to stage world class events that are not only accessible but deliver an extraordinary competition experience for all levels of participants, as well as their families and Schools.

on July 9 at the Perisher Nordic Trails. The day is hosted by SnowSports ACT and Perisher XC and is a great opportunity to introduce new participants to the sport. The day involves a two hour lesson by professional instructors, a BBQ lunch and tour of the trails in the afternoon. A big focus of SnowSports ACT, are events for schools and entry level athletes. The ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Championships is the largest participation event

that is organsied by SnowSports ACT. We are expecting 800 competitors from 80 schools to compete at Perisher from July 27 to 29. We look forward to the introduction of division six alpine, which caters for children in kindergarten to year two. A popular event for Canberra schools is the ACT Schools Cup at Perisher, which will be held towards the end of the season. This is a great race for those practising for the Australian Interschools Championships, held the following week or a fun end of season event for many. There are also a couple of events that are open to all ages and abilities. The Ridercross Cup will be held in Thredbo on July 24 and this is a Skier Cross and Snowboard Cross event. The ACT Citizens Race at Perisher on August 14 is the perfect race for either your first or one hundredth race. The race offers Alpine and Snowboard GS and is often used by clubs for their club championships. Div 6 Alpine - a new awards and event category in 2016 NSW INTERSCHOOLS BY WENDY OLSEN THE NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships is a series of snow sports competitions where school students can compete in teams or as individuals across seven snowsports disciplines. These include Alpine Giant Slalom, Ski Cross, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross, Cross-Country Relay, CrossCountry Freestyle, and Freestyle Moguls events. The 2015 events attracted 8919 competitor entries from 250 NSW,

32 ACT and 31 QLD schools, with 3029 competitors taking part in the Championships. The entry numbers makes Interschools Snowsports one of the single biggest sporting events in Australia at any level. Last season, we also experienced an overall growth of over 20 per cent in new schools entering the NSW/QLD/ACT Interschools Championships, including 18 Queensland schools. We are looking forward to the season ahead with a couple of new developments. For the first time, competitors will be able to enter Division 6 Alpine, a new

awards and event category for those in kindergarten to year 2. The event will be a perfect opportunity to introduce new ski racers to Interschools in a non threatening environment. The course at the regional championships will be shorter than other Alpine courses and competitors can qualify for Division 6 Alpine events at both the NSW State and National Championships. At the recent Ski & Snowboard Australia Awards, two NSW schools took out the National school awards. Jindabyne Central School

won School Snowsports Club of the Year and Wenona won Outstanding Achievement for Smaller Schools with their crosscountry skiing program. Matt Graham, former Interschools competitor for Central Coast Grammar won Athlete of the Year, for his amazing season in which he won his first World Cup and ended the season ranked second in the world. Junior Athlete of the Year went to Snowboard Halfpipe athlete Emily Arthur, former Interschools competitor from St John Bosco and NSW Snowsports athlete.

The Interschools Championships is a mass participation event and is suitable for all levels of skiers and boarders, from first time racers to aspiring athletes and professionals. It is a starting block for further competition, which has seen at least 20 Olympians start their career at Interschools competitions. MASTERS’ Weeks at Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna, BC have exploded in popularity. So much so that additional dates have been added for the upcoming winter season. Writer Yvette Cardozo visited Canada’s Big White and discovered that it is the ideal playground for all ages and abilities including Masters’ skiers. Here’s what she had to say; Big White. How perfect. The resort is intermediate/advanced and also a beginner’s heaven. Yes, it’s called Big White for a reason, but somehow, the way the runs flow make sense and easy to grasp in just a day or two. Beyond all that snow, Big White is families skiing together, it’s locals coming up for one-day clinics and semi-permanent residents living in lodges, gathering in the common rooms for impromptu jam sessions or trekking downhill to Happy Valley for bingo night. It’s family barbecue nights and a dozen non-ski

options ranging from an ice climbing tower to ice skating, sleigh rides and snowmobiling. Some 20 years ago when I visited Big White there were just a couple of hotels down the road. Now there are 17,000 pillows, every one of them accessible on skis. Big White is, today, Canada’s largest fully ski in/ ski out resort. And on to the skiing. First up I joined Masters’ Mondays, a program at Big White set up for folks over 50. How nice to ski with people who understand ageing joints. I spent the morning in a class learning to ‘keep my ta-tas’ over my knees and thanks to that centreing of my balance, was able to go on to steeper and deeper terrain. Masters Ski Week has been a highlight of the Big White calendar for several years, so popular in fact that there will be two weeks in 2017, from January 30 to February 3 and February 27 to March 3. They like to welcome Masters’ skiers from all over the world, including Australia. The event is

highly social and designed for passionate skiers over the age of 50. Director of Snow Sports Josh Foster says it’s a fantastic week particularly for visiting Masters’ skiers and boarders to meet other like-minded snow enthusiasts in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. As well as the competition, which is all about friendly rivalry, there is wine tasting, apres high tea, sleigh rides and seminars. There’s also a Masters’ ski camp in the lead-up, providing group lessons for people to hone their skills. The ski season at Big White runs late November to mid April and the resort has daily shuttles from the Kelowna airport. The mountain is above all a family friendly resort, featuring 118 runs and 16 lifts spread across five bowls, just under 2800 skiable acres and a vertical drop of 2550 feet. Big White. How perfect! Details for booking your Masters’ Week vacation can be found here http://www. bigwhite.com.

Ski Japan for deep, fluffy powder BY FELICITY MOSS MOGUL SKI WORLD SKIING in Japan is extremely popular and while the well known resorts of Niseko, Nozawa Onsen and Hakuba fill up quickly over the December to January period, there are some other fabulous resorts that should be considered. On the Island of Hokkaido we would suggest considering the following resorts: ` Rusutsu - Located a one and a half hour drive from Chitose airport, Rusutsu has a ski area spread over three peaks and has one of the largest and most modern lift networks in Hokkaido. The ski terrain is great and varied with lots of runs through the beautiful trees and like its close neighbour Niseko, has fabulous powder. This year the Rusutsu tower has been rebranded to a Westin and is a great place to stay. ` Furano - One of the largest resorts on the island of Hokkaido, this resort is also well known for some of the best powder skiing, mainly due to the Siberian storm systems that pass over the sea of Japan and then dump the lightest and driest snow in Hokkaido. There is a good range of skiing from beginners to experts, overnight grooming and lots of sunny days. ` Kiroro - Only two hours from Chitose airport, Kiroro is a hidden gem in the

& DIRECTORS CONFERENCE

Central Hokkaido region and it traditionally receives more snow than its sibling resorts and locals come to Kiroro to escape lift lines and find deep untracked tree skiing. Lift lines are rare and even when the snow stops falling, untracked snow can be found for days. There are also plenty of off snow experiences such as the snow Segway, snow rafting or relaxing in the Kiroro hot springs. There is a great Sheraton resort to stay in which is located at the base of the mountain and it is ski in and ski out. ` Tomamu - A modern, high class resort located in central Hokkaido, which also features the light and fluffy snow that Hokkaido is renowned for. There is a great variety of runs but the controlled ‘off piste’ is exceptional and once this is all tracked, there is cat skiing available. There is a good range of nice accommodation and the resort offers other snow activities such as snowmobiling, snow rafting, cross country skiing, paraskiing, snow shoeing and dog sledding. The highlight of a visit is the illuminated Ice Village, which is a collection of domes constructed entirely of snow and ice. If you want a real break from skiing while here, visit the Mina Mina beach, which offers one of Japan’s largest indoor wave pools. We would recommend you give one of these resorts a try, we don’t think you will be disappointed. Book with Mogul Ski World www. mogulski.com.au.
