FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thank you for your interest in the work of Providence University College and Theological Seminary. Our mission depends upon the support of the broader community, and we are grateful for your participation.

I have been President for all of four months now, but already I have grown to love and appreciate the people and the mission of Providence. This place is populated by great people who are committed to the person of Jesus Christ and the purpose of God’s Kingdom. Everything we do is dedicated to the fulfilment of our prayer that “God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Whether it is developing people to appreciate the wonders of God’s creation through Health Sciences, the formation of people prepared as entrepreneurs to build businesses and organizations that are good for people in the world or helping students to understand God more fully through investigation of the Bible, we exist to honour God through the blessing of our students.

Every number, fact, and story presented in these pages represents people that God has called to Providence and called to His service for the 2020-2021 academic year. We reflect with thanksgiving on God’s faithfulness throughout the last year, and look with anticipation to what He has in store for us in 2021-2022. ACADEMICS

RELAUNCHING DIDASKALIA: OUR THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY JOURNAL Didaskalia’s new editorial board has taken the opportunity to reimagine ways of more effectively ministering to and with the local church. In addition to peer-reviewed essays and thoughtful book reviews of recent works, the journal will include interviews with leading practitioners and figures in their field, and exemplary sermons with commentary from leading homileticians.

The most recent (Spring 2021) issue focuses on the theme of worship and includes an interview with Canadian songwriters and worship leaders, Steve Bell and Glen Soderholm. You can go to Prov.ca/Didaskalia to order your copy.

BTS SYMPOSIUM: THE CHURCH POST PANDEMIC On October 19th, 2020 the Bible and Theology Department of Providence Seminary invited alumni, area pastors, boards and lay leaders to join a free half-day Zoom forum on the topic The Church Post-Pandemic. With a panel consisting of seminary faculty and three area pastors, the forum held discussions around biblical & theological foundations and best practices for faithful ministry during the pandemic.

Some of the session topics included ‘Holding Steady in Turbulent Times,’ ‘Pastoring in the Pandemic & Beyond: Reflection on Ministry’ and ‘Harnessing Difficulty for Discipleship.’ A recording is available on our YouTube channel at YouTube.com/ProvManitoba.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

PROVIDENCE GOLF CLASSIC The 22nd Annual Providence Golf Classic took place on August 18, 2020 and included staggered tee times to ensure a safe and physically distanced tournament at Quarry Oaks, a beautiful 440-acre golf course.

Approximately 110 people participated and we raised more than $50,000.

VIRTUAL HARVEST FESTIVAL For the first time ever, Providence celebrated its annual Harvest Festival virtually. The 40-minute event took place on October 29, 2020 using both Facebook and YouTube as our online platforms. We raised more than $20,000 with around 250 participants tuning in.

PREVIEW PROV Our Preview Prov, which traditionally is an overnighter to help high school students experience campus life firsthand, was transformed into a virtual event this year. It featured a campus tour, info sessions, and a chance to interact via Zoom with professors and current students at Providence.

DAY 4 PROV Our Providence community celebrated its third annual Day 4 Prov on March 18, 2021, displaying their newest and oldest Providence shirts, hats, jerseys and more as they posted on social media about the difference Providence has made in their lives. This year, a total of 68 gifts were given and we raised more than $7,000!

VIRTUAL GRADUATION Our Virtual Graduation was held on May 29, 2021. A ceremony for both the university college and seminary was broadcasted over Facebook and YouTube which included a message from Past President David Johnson, valedictorian speeches and warm video greetings from faculty.

PROVIDENCE LEGACY FUND Did you know that The Providence Legacy Fund grew by 11% this past year? Approximately 200 Providence students received scholarships and bursaries in 2020-2021 that totaled $90K. The Providence Legacy Fund consists of two types of investments: endowments where the capital is invested in perpetuity and the earnings are used for particular projects or to support general operations, and trust funds where both the capital and its earnings are used over a specified time for a particular project. The Legacy Fund consists of funds held by Providence and by The Winnipeg Foundation which combined on April 30, 2021 totalled $1,803,267.
