‘Tis the Season Unlike the rest of the year, which I spend either wishing it were still summer or wishing summer would last forever, I’m all about December. The festive month has a charm and beauty unlike any other. It’s only 25 days between then and Christmas to get in as much merriment and holiday cheer as humanly possible – you know, between shopping, wrapping, baking, writing out cards, more shopping, the occasional hour of sleep and, oh yeah, working. My point is this: you don’t have all that much time to fit in the great parts about the holiday season. That’s where SO Rhode Island comes in. This year, we did the heavy lifting for you, and planned out your entire month of holiday cheer.

Farm House Ale An Exeter micro-brewery gives new meaning to the phrase “drink local” How local is your beer? While locally brewed beer has become an increasingly common presence in our bars and liquor stores, most of it is made from ingredients sourced elsewhere. The beer coming out of Tilted Barn Brewery, on the other hand, is about as local as it gets: it’s literally brewed in a barn on a farm in Exeter using hops that are grown just a few hundred yards away. “Almost every beer we’re going to do is going to have some aspect of the farm in it,” says brewer and founder Matt Richardson. That means this fall’s pumpkin ale is made with homegrown pumpkins. Perhaps the most unique example will come in the spring, when Richardson will brew a spruce tip pale ale using fresh cuttings from the farm’s Christmas tree fields. The brewery was the next logical step for Richardson and his wife Kara. They bought the property from Kara’s family, and continued to operate it as a Christmas tree farm. Around 2007, Matt, a hobbyist brewer, was prompted by a worldwide hops shortage to

start growing his own. Along with his brother-in-law Joel, he eventually began selling them commercially under the name Ocean State Hops. Local operations like Newport Storm and Pawtucket’s Bucket Brewery became his customers. With the launch of Tilted Barn, Richardson will now be keeping all those hops for himself… well, not quite. He’s excited to use the family farm – where visitors are welcomed by his delightfully friendly dogs Summit and Tupelo, and perhaps even offered a guided tour by his three-year-old daughter Violet – to share his love of hops with beer enthusiasts through weekly tastings. “Most people don’t even know what hops look like,” he enthuses. “It’s exciting to not just sell people beer, but educate them a little bit.” As we head into the holiday season, a Christmas tree and a growler of pumpkin ale sounds like the perfect kind of one-stop shopping. 1 Helmsley Place, Exeter. www.facebook.com/tiltedbarnbrewery –John Taraborelli

Dr. Zullo, a devoted surfer, is an expert in surf-related injuries

There’s a new doc in town and he landed on our shores through his love of surfing. Dr. Mark Zullo has been coming here to surf a few times a week since his med school days at Tufts. He is such an avid surfer that he took the plunge and relocated his Family Medicine practice to Wakefield in September. As a member of the Surfer’s Medical Association, Dr. Zullo has a special interest in surfing injuries. “Thankfully, injuries are rare” he says, “and have lessened in frequency since surfboard leashes were introduced.” While most injuries are cuts and bruises, sometimes from hitting the sea floor, Mark says there are ways surfers can minimize their risks including staying in shape and knowing your limits. “If you are a beginner you shouldn’t be surfing at Monahan’s Dock the day before a hurricane.” The doctor, who surfs year round, also advises to be aware of how fast hypothermia can set in. “If you

start to feel chilled and you are getting uncoordinated and are falling, it’s time to get out,” he cautions. Mark caught the surfing bug at age 15 while growing up on Long Island, but he’s been surfing the So Rhode Island waters for over 30 years. His favorite spots are Matunuck and the Pt. Judith Lighthouse. He tells parents not to worry if their children want to take up the sport, saying “It’s great exercise and works the core muscles well. The younger kids seem to learn to paddle and stand very quickly.” He does note that they should be strong swimmers first and taught to respect the ocean. The good doctor’s first prescription? His license plate says it all: RX-SURF. doing good work The Washington County Coalition for Children works hard for kids who need help and don’t know how to ask for it by Bethany Vaccaro

t is often said that children are our future. But there are big challenges for our kids today, and sometimes, our systems are slow to catch up with the needs. Here in southern Rhode Island, our children have a unique band of advocates, people from many occupations who unite across towns, school districts and agencies to tackle the most pressing needs of the county’s children. The Washington County Coalition for Children (WCCC) is the region’s only countywide organization advocating for children and their families, bringing together an impressive array of advocates on a primarily volunteer basis since its inception in 2001. “The Coalition identifies needs that can’t be solved by any one agency or any one group,” explains Susan

Orban, a social worker who is the only paid part-time staffer for the group. “These issues really require collaboration to address.” The group regularly analyzes data on the status of the county’s children and uses that to develop priorities. They look for the gaps, where kids might be falling through the cracks, and then unite people across the community to create solutions. A long-time volunteer and mental health counselor who works with kids, Mike Cerullo, joined the WCCC while he was serving on the Exeter Town Council. “What makes the Coalition authentic and effective,” he says, “is that it is made up of volunteers who work in the trenches. We understand the needs and what works to meet the needs because we function at the ground level. We’re

volunteers and not administrators. We’re not doing this because it’s part of our jobs.” Some of the top priorities identified by the group are addressing children’s mental health and bullying prevention. Children and young adults are experiencing mental health and behavioral problems in greater numbers, yet an awareness of this and an understanding of how to respond to them has not kept pace. Mental health is also often stigmatized and misunderstood. According to the WCCC, one in five children experience mental and behavioral health problems, including depression, anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. But 75-80% of children and youth do not receive the mental health services that they need. Last month, the group, in partnership

with Gateway Healthcare, the South Kingstown Police Department, and all seven South County school districts in addition to East Greenwich, received a prestigious grant from the Federal Center for Mental Health Services to launch a major mental health effort to equip those in the community who work with children to change this alarming statistic. The grant was one of only 100 administered in the United States and the only one awarded in Rhode Island. It will bring the evidence-based program Youth Mental Health First Aid to Southern RI, training 500 people in the community to identify and respond to signs of mental health problems among teens. Teachers, police officers, Scout leaders, and coaches will be among those invited to receive training.

Teaching Emotional Literacy Here are some tips from the WCCC in fostering emotional awareness and competence in kids, based on the Feelin’ Groovy emotional literacy program. #1 Name that feeling Help your child identify and name their feelings. Notice the ways your child expresses their emotions through body cues, facial expressions and behavioral changes. #2 Set a good example Children learn how to interact with others by watching the adults in their life. Show them with your own words and actions that feelings are okay, everyone has them and that no one should be judged or criticized for feeling a certain way.

#3 Talk about the interactions around you Children are constantly exposed to both positive and negative expressions of feelings, from the playground to television to bedtime. Use these situations as teachable moments. #4 Teach how to cope with negative emotions It’s normal to experience emotions such as anger or jealousy. Don’t try to “fix” negative emotions, but instead demonstrate appropriate ways to release them, such as doing jumping jacks, making a drawing or squeezing a squishy ball. #5 Ask, “How would you feel?” Talk about the impact of unkind or hurtful behaviors on others. Foster empathy in kids by recognizing them when they show it towards others.

Chalk It Up Against Bullying rally

The WCCC also targets younger children with an emotional literacy project, Feelin’ Groovy, to run in second grade classrooms around the region. “An important component of positive mental health is emotional regulation and it begins with being able to identify and talk about your feelings,” says Orban. Feelin’ Groovy combines a picture-book story, lesson plans and an art project to teach kids how to express and celebrate their feelings. This past year, the program ran in 22 classrooms throughout 14 area schools. “Kids learn that it’s okay to have feelings. It’s about how you express your feelings,” adds Orban. Another focus has been on bullying prevention. As many as 67% of middle school students in Washington County report that they have experienced at least one type of bullying within the last 12 months. The WCCC has worked with area schools to implement proven, data-driven bullying intervention and prevention programs, which can now be found in many area elementary and middle schools. But they don’t stop their efforts when the school day is over. “Research shows that with bullying prevention, you have to change hearts and minds in the community in order to really be effective,” explains

Orban. This year, the WCCC held the second annual Chalk It Up Against Bullying rally, where sidewalks in Wakefield and Westerly were covered in chalk anti-bullying messages. They distributed handouts debunking common myths about bullying, such as that it is a natural part of childhood or “boys will be boys.” Bullying does not occur in isolated incidents by a few “bad apples.” Parents, peers, school and communities play a role in reinforcing or discouraging bullying behaviors. The WCCC celebrates this rare collaborative spirit that drives all of its initiatives. “All of these issues that we address are beyond the scope of any one agency. Together, we are able to do something about it and it makes a difference and that is very exciting to me,” says Orban. “I’ve been unbelievably fortunate to work with so many fabulous volunteers and collaborators who are just as passionate as I am about kids’ issues. They’ve made this happen.” The group continues to host a yearly “How Are the Children?” forum to update the community about the current data and to vote on what the priorities of the group should be. Glide into December There’s nothing more Christmassey than gliding across the ice at the Providence Skating Rink. Dance Your Way to Providence If there’s a season to experience the ballet, it’s during the holidays. The Nutcracker is practically the official soundtrack of Christmas. The performance includes a 25-foot Christmas tree, life-size dolls and The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies in all its glory. A Celebration Fit for American Royalty Oh what fun it is to ride… to Bristol, to celebrate Christmas at Linden Place. During Christmas in Newport, there is literally something fun happening every single day in December – and usually more than one thing. The celebration kicks off on December 1 with a tree lighting ceremony (one of three happening in Newport this month) complete with a cannon salute and live entertainment. Throughout the month, check out events ranging from the boozy (a Decorate the Brewery event at Coastal Extreme) to the literary (Living Literature Presents: Owen Meany’s Christmas Pageant), from the educational (Holiday Histories Walking Tour) to the black tie (the 38th annual Governor’s Ball at Salve Regina). Christmas concerts happen all over the city all month long, and thanks to some holiday decorating contests, there’s plenty of eye candy to take in while you’re on your way. The Uricchios’ home highlights ocean views by putting common spaces on the top floor

A New Chapter A Connecticut couple embraces the Narragansett life

of Connecticut were no strangers to the spoils of Narragansett. They had a second home in the seaside town but always kept their eyes open for a property a little closer to the water. When land close to beloved Scarborough Beach came on the market, the two knew it wouldn’t last long. “We were looking for something closer to the ocean, a big open space,” explains Gina. “We ended up finding this lot, mulled it over and we decided we’d go forward with it.” Though the idea of building a home from scratch was intimidating, the couple was confident North Kingstown-based architect Gail Hallock and builder Steve Lawrence would create a house that celebrated coastal living, casual entertaining and the art of unwinding. “We are familyoriented so we knew we wanted a big

open floor plan, lots of space, lots of windows and natural light, and nooks everywhere where people could go off on their own but not be completely isolated,” explains Gina. Steve proposed an “upside down” design scheme to maximize the views. “They’re not waterfront, they are water-view, so we put the kitchen, living and dining rooms on the top floor, looking right out over the beach,” he explains. He also knew multiple-level outdoor decks would capitalize on the picturesque locale, which abuts scenic wetlands as well. The decks offer private micro spaces where John, Gina, the kids and guests can enjoy individual pursuits but all still be under one roof. “There’s one off the top of the third floor and one on the second floor off a bedroom. I wanted place you can read a book or do yoga, but someone could

be upstairs having a drink,” Gina says. On cooler nights, the Uricchios, their family and guests encircle the fire pit directly off the bottom floor. The couple brought varying ideas to both Steve and Gail. The two professionals took the couple’s wants and needs into account along with things they hadn’t thought of and also proposed effective design solutions. Steve and John had actually spoken about home design ideas even before he and Gina had purchased property, so the process flowed quickly and seamlessly. “My husband and I had a great rapport with them,” says Gina. The views and the home’s costal environs also inspired the colors and design scheme throughout. “I definitely knew I was going to do palettes of grays, creams and whites and of course, bring in the blues; all

the beach colors.” With three distinct levels and multiple rooms, Gina turned to Ellen McKenna Design of Jamestown to consult with color and design decisions. Ellen, both an interior and architectural designer with nearly two decades experience, looks to blend beauty, comfort and purpose. “I worked with Gina on the lighting design and fixture choices for her home,” Ellen says. “One element of my design was to finish the great room ceiling with whitewashed wood. We didn’t want to ruin the wood with recessed lights so I had to be very creative to get enough layers of light in the large space. We also have a large feature chandelier over the dining table in the center of the room, which gives the space warmth and a central focal point.” “I just wanted anybody who came in to feel they were at home; just able to December 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

That idea comes through the paint, color scheme and fabrics,” explains Gina. “I wanted to create a very homey, secure place where you feel you don’t have to go anywhere. “ One piece Gina and John were absolutely committed to highlighting was an unconventional, usually mundane piece in the kitchen. “Ellen and I worked on piecing together the fixtures, the tile, but the highlight was the Viking blue fridge – it was first piece my husband and I saw and we decided we were going to anchor everything from there.” They looked to Arlene Aguilera at Kitchen Direct in Wakefield to design the kitchen

around the whimsical piece. The couple also wanted the natural stone fireplace in the living room to be a focal point, rivaled of course by the water views. Overall, Gina calls Ellen “instrumental” when it came to what was achievable in each space and bringing their personal taste out. “It all ties together nicely,” adds Gina. “What I did was I always had a folder with tear sheets from Coastal Living and different home magazines and catalogs and through that, we built our story, we built our dream home, pulling in a lot of elements,” explains Gina. “Even though plans change and you move stuff, it’s good to have an idea of how it all began.”

Though the two have similar taste, John and Gina have differing interests. “I’m into yoga. John is into TVs and we find a happy place between us,” she says. “The house Steve built for us is so custom.” The Uricchios succeeded in making the home a warm, welcoming space. It’s not uncommon for friends and neighbors to drop in at the home to say hello, to have a drink before or after dinner or to just spend time together. Gina credits the surrounding town’s naturally easy-going vibe with part of the overall ambiance. “We love beach life Narragansett living – laid back community is so welcoming, great people in the neighborhood.

The beach always invites laid back entertaining.” Though it thrives as a summer home, the Uricchios have been enjoying the spoils of the quieter months here lately. Gina says as much as they love hosting family and friends during the glorious summer months, this time of year, the two can hunker in, put their hosting duties aside and go to their favorite local restaurants. “Being here is very grounding and relaxing,” adds Gina. “We absolutely adore it.”

You’ve always carried jewelry and accessories, but it looks like you’ve expanded your offerings. What’s new? We decided to add more to the mix, some things our customers have been asking for. We have expanded our inventory to carry more clothing and gift items. Cute dresses and tops are in stock now along with soft robes and slipper socks. We have locally made candles from Bedrock Farms and “Inis” perfume. We also carry items by local artists including jewelry by Roberta Harvey-Davis and Janine Johnson as well as unique prints and cards in ASL (American Sign Language) by Emily Maxwell. With the holidays upon us now is the time for a little extra bling and sparkle. What do you recommend to dress up an outfit for the inevitable parties? Statement necklaces can give a color pop to any little black dress or cocktail dress. A little sparkle can say a lot. We truly believe that “less is more.” Beautiful sparkly earrings

with a fun wrap are often all that is needed to make you shine. I’m not a sequin type of gal myself, so what could I do to represent the season in a more understated way? A fresh manicure and a colorful evening bag can pull an outfit together. We carry lots of bags in jewel tones, some flashier than others, as well as plainer ones in neutral tones. You can go as fancy or understated as you prefer. Some of our bags have more splash with feathers or crystals, others are just beautiful colors in gorgeous satins. A subtle hairpiece is also a great touch. I think most of us tend to dress in darker colors during the winter. Do you carry accessories or jewelry that would add a bold splash of color to a dark outfit? We love color at Spangles. From fire engine red to winter white, any color can make a dark outfit look special. We carry unique hair accessories and shawls that can add a pop of color to a monochrome outfit. We encourage people to bring their outfits into the store and we work to personalize our accessories to fit their style and personality. It’s a great feeling when it all comes together; our customer leaves knowing that their outfit is complete.

There are always those hard to buy for people. Do you have any gift suggestions for a child’s teacher or a picky mother-in-law? A great gift is our “Laura & Lilly” bracelets. What are a few basics that we all should have in our closets? Those items that we can use all year round? A colorful scarf is always good to have. In the winter it can be used for warmth and in summer it can be slung around the shoulders. Classic pearls never go out of style and can be worn with so many outfits. All’s Fair on the Island Feel-good seaside shopping in Jamestown When my kids were

babies and toddlers, the most sacred part of my day was naptime (theirs, not mine!). My structured routine each day usually yielded a couple of hours of peace and quiet, but on the days I couldn’t get my brood to cooperate I relied on Plan B – taking a scenic drive so they would fall asleep in the car. Though I had several routes to choose from, my favorite, hands down, was beautiful Jamestown. I could easily cruise by the historic Jamestown Windmill, or slowly drift through Beavertail Park and my little ones would catch Z’s for just the right amount of time, but during our serene naptime rides, I always made sure my mini excursion included a ride through picture-perfect downtown. Dotted with fantastic restaurants, playgrounds and professional offices, there were always amazing one-of-a-kind shops to be had. Time has marched on, and now many of my kids are driving me places, but one thing that hasn’t changed is Jamestown’s charm, including some wonderful new, creative stores to explore. Fair Trade Winds is one of Jamestown’s newest shopping venues, which is quickly becoming an anchor to the shopping pulse downtown. Overlooking the gorgeous bay, I sensed something special about this shop from just peering through the gleaming window displays of spectacular artisan lamps and mobiles made from earthy shells. Once inside I met down-to-earth manager Reva Greenstein who was artfully arranging an exquisite collection of Wild Woolies felt birdhouses. As a tactile person, I delighted in touching these brilliantly colored birdhouses that came in dozens of adorable shapes and vibrant shades and can be used as a clever indoor home decoration item or can actually be placed outside where small birds are known to use them for nesting. The aroma of fresh coffee beans from the well-known Dean’s Beans wafted through the space where I had the chance to learn some cool info about the Fair Trade biz and why the products in this store are unlike any other. This family-run store began when owners Lois and Paul Culler, familiar with fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate, through buying and selling these products at their church for many years, wanted to expand their product line. They discovered the Fair Trade Federation of North America, which supports

the Fair Trade concept in many areas of the world such as Haiti, Peru, India, Kenya and the Philippines. Reva explains with great passion that Fair Trade goods come from farmers and workers across the globe who are justly compensated for their product. Meant to be a long-term system, not short-term charity, Fair Trade works to make communities sustainable on all levels. The impact of Fair Trade goes way beyond a fair, living wage; it empowers those living in poverty, especially women who are often the most marginalized, to create positive change in their lives and their communities. “Behind every item we carry in this store, is a person’s life, maybe an entire village’s life,” she exclaims. The Cullers started small by selling products locally at fairs, events, and churches. Eventually, they invested in a retail space and Fair Trade Winds was born. Today, the extended family operates seven stores which are an integral part of a cooperative effort to benefit farmers, artisans, and the environment, and their Jamestown store is their newest location which has been open for 1 1/2 years now, recently expanding so they can carry a larger assortment of Fair Trade merchandise. Crazy for table linens, I spot a stunning collection of hand-block printed napkins made in India and some of the prettiest table runners I’ve ever seen – reasonably priced so I can buy a set for a gift and score one for myself. Those of you who know my fetish for wall art will understand that my heart skipped a beat (make that several!)

when I checked out the amazing assortment of wall hangings. The metal pieces crafted from oil drums ranged from garden hangings to intricate art-deco pieces. The wooden garlands made from beads awash in Caribbean colors will add flair to any mantle and would be perfect for holiday decorating. The Capiz shell strands can be used for draping your Christmas tree or to stream gently in a doorway. Shopping here is a very sensual experience – it’s all covered – taste, touch, smell, sight and let’s not forget about sound, there are CD’s available that will deliver an authentic journey to these very villages that are making this magical store possible. was busy. There were not any tables available inside, so my friend and I were given a table on the enclosed deck. It was cold, but we chose a table near a heater, so it wasn’t too bad. The restaurant’s specialty cocktail list is small but well crafted. Their signature Blueberry Basil Sangria ($12) blends Stoli Blueberry Vodka with lemonade, muddled blueberries and basil and is topped off with sparkling water. They even put oysters in their cocktails! The Oyster Shooter ($7) is a shot glass filled with a local oyster, Absolut Peppar Vodka, cocktail sauce, horseradish and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. If you are looking to splurge, there is a combo special which includes a dozen raw oysters and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot ($95). On the Saturday night we visited, there was entertainment on the outside deck. Two men (Ed & Ted) performed for the full time we were there, playing guitar and singing classic rock tunes. On the night I was there, they offered two types of local raw oysters – Ninigret Nectars and Watch Hill. Wanting to sample some oysters but also looking for something to warm me up, I started with an order of the Oysters Rockefeller ($12). My five large oysters were broiled in their shell along with steamed spinach, bacon, swiss cheese

and bread crumbs. Even if you’re not usually an oyster fan, you really can’t go wrong with oysters smothered in cheese and bacon. I still prefer my oysters raw, but the Rockefeller version was tasty. My friend began with a cup of New England Clam Chowder ($5), and this was no ordinary cup

sized portion. It was a very large serving, and my friend reported the chowder to be super hot and the perfect consistency (not too thick and not too thin). She loved it. Seeing how cold it was the night I was there, I really craved warm, comfort food, and the Baked Lobster Mac & Cheese ($18) fit the bill. It wasn’t a huge portion, but it was full of tender lobster meat. Seriously, every bite had a piece of lobster in it. The cheese sauce was a combination of cheddar and Monterey jack, which gave it both a delicious flavor and a velvety smooth texture. My friend decided to try the Fried Shrimp and Chips ($17). Although the menu described the shrimp as being “breaded in Panko breadcrumbs,” they arrived battered and deep-fried. Not a bad thing, just not what she expected. There were five very large pieces of shrimp, and they seemed larger than jumbo, so we asked our waitress. She told us they are considered “colossal” because they are ten shrimp per pound. It was a bold choice for fried shrimp and not what either one of us was imagining. The shrimp were accompanied by amazingly good French fries, cole

When it comes to fresh seafood, southern Rhode Islanders have the inside edge. At this time of year, local fishermen are bringing in what seems to be an endless supply of seafood for us to feast on. We have swordfish, monkfish, yellowfin tuna, skate, squid and scallops. Since the Matunuck Oyster Farm opened in 2002, we’ve been lucky enough to have an oyster renaissance as well. According to my calculations, South County currently has 13 oyster farms! As any oyster farmer will tell you, fall and winter are the best times to partake in the oyster bounty because that is when they are the sweetest. If shucking your own seems like too daunting of a task, the TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill in Wakefield is ready to satisfy your oyster cravings. Located on the site of the former Hanson’s Landing and overlooking Salt Pond, TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill has been serving local seafood since it opened this past spring. The restaurant is in the perfect spot and has gorgeous views of the water and the marina. Though I was there on a cold, autumn night, I could easily imagine the mobs of people swarming the restaurant’s three bars (two outdoors), enjoying some oysters and soaking in every last bit of sunshine. She checked back several times to make sure we were enjoying our meals. We were too cold to stay for dessert, but I did inquire about them and most are made in-house by one of the owner’s wives. On the night we were there, they had a selection of pies (key lime, blueberry and pumpkin) and a pumpkin swirl cheesecake. A woman at the table next to us had the pumpkin swirl cheesecake, and it was a huge portion. 300 North Takes the Tower New owners put fresh twists on Italian classics

It’s not often that

a restaurant property changes hands completely peaceably, but with 300 North replacing Liliana’s near the tower in South Kingstown, we have just that. Chris Willett, and brothers Greg and Tim Pelleccione, assumed control of Liliana’s in May. After feeling things out, they reopened on October 14 as 300 North. Their intention: to refresh a restaurant in need of some renewed passion and attention. Chris explained he was good friends with Dino Passaretta, the former owner, and that Liliana’s was a favored restaurant and hang of his. Liliana’s had gained some regulars over the last several years, as well as getting some steady trade from the adjoining Holiday Inn, but it had run its course. With Dino not having as much time to devote to the restaurant, and Chris eager to get into the restaurant business, the solution seemed to present itself. 300 North has affinities with its descendant, and the general idea is much the same: an upscale but casual Italian eatery. That said, the new ownership wanted a new trajectory, so along with the new name, they’ve a new menu, new staff and a new Chef, in Geof Williams. He goes by Chef Geof, and he says the restaurant wants to have the “quality of a buttoned up approach to dining, but with a laid back South Coast attitude.” He’s got that attitude in spades. Geof’s new menu has something for everyone with sandwiches and pizza for hotel guests, and the classics of American Italian dining like chicken parmigiana, marsala and veal saltimbocca. He’s proud to make all of that well, but he’s most excited by putting his own twist on things, and offering some signature menu items that are a little different. His vegetarian lasagna for instance, is pasta free, with strips of fried eggplant as a substitute. In addition to accommodating different dietary restrictions, there’s also a definite effort to source locally. Among others, they are using Narragansett Creamery for their smoked mozzarella, and Sunset Farms for seasonal vegetables.

Geof has worked in kitchens for years, most recently at the nowclosed Pelly’s 19th Hole, but he also has had considerable experience as a sommelier in New York. He’s putting that experience to work overhauling the wine list, providing far more Italian-focused offerings, and a well-curated selection of wines by the glass. Down the road, Geof’s ultimate vision is to explore Italian regional cuisine. The idea is to offer specials on a weekly or monthly basis that explore the cuisine from one of the 20 regions of Italy, paired with accompanying wine from that same region. 300 North is open for breakfast and dinner, and are looking toward both late night service, as well as a Sunday brunch in future. Tell me about some of those improvements. We are now taking a more back-tobasics approach toward our cocktails and really moving more towards mixology. We’ve been able to re-introduce pre-prohibition style cocktail mixers and concentrates with new trending flavor profiles and even some other flavor combinations that might make you curious. We are constantly trying to redefine our own style of “Eclectic American.” What’s a cocktail original to Besos that we must try? Since the beginning of our Cocktail Book project we have amassed 83 house specialty cocktail recipes. The list grows constantly. Our selection includes seven different Bloody Marys and many plays on classic cocktails as well as new combinations, infusions and presentations that you probably haven’t seen before. Ask for the Drink Book. Besos means kisses in Spanish. Do you have any Spanish cocktails on the menu? While Besos does mean kisses in Spanish, we don’t consider ourselves to be a Spanish restaurant. We do, however, have some Latin and Spanish-inspired cocktails such as the Colombian Espresso Martini and the Chapo Guzman’s Revenge. We also have many renditions of the mojito and margarita using any combination of our seven house-made flavored simple syrups,

eight house-made shrubs, or any of our many infused liquors. What is your signature cocktail? I would say I specialize in anything weird. From balsamic drinks to carrot vodkas and beet colored syrups, I really love to wow people. Anything that gets people on the other side of the bar asking, “What was that?” Lately I would say I really enjoy making the Accidentally on Purpose, which is a reposado tequila and amaro based cocktail. Any great winter cocktails we should try? You have to try either the Quahog Grog or our Spiced Hot Toddy, which is best enjoyed outside by the fire pit. But for something a little more appropriate for dinner I would suggest the Yule Love it, which is a cranberry and white rum based cocktail. What is your favorite wine/food pairing for winter? We have a fantastic wine list at Besos thanks to our in-house wine geek, Derek. He turned me on to a Spanish Priorat wine called Val Llach Embruix. It pairs fantastically with our New York Strip Crostini small plate.

If you’re not in the mood for a cocktail what else is available? We do have a teetotaler’s selection at Besos, which currently has five items on it. We are also making our very own hot-spiced apple cider all winter, which can be served with or without alcohol. What do you do when you’re not behind the bar? I am currently finishing up my undergraduate degree in Political Science at Rhode Island College and I have ambitions of attending law school by the fall of 2016. What is your advice to bartenders just starting out? The customer doesn’t always know what they want. Confidence goes a long way toward success.

Beautiful burgers and breakfast The mighty hamburger

is a menu item that almost every restaurant carries, so it takes something really special to say “damn, this is one of the best burgers I’ve ever had.” Oak Street B&B in Westerly gets those bragging rights and they were voted Best Burger by The Westerly Sun three years running. The owners tested every element to make sure what they offered was perfect before they opened their doors back in 2011. The handmade burgers are served on Portuguese sweet rolls, which arrive freshly baked from Fall River and are just the right combination of thickness and sweetness to complement the meat. The Oak Sauce dressing is a souped-up variation of Thousand Island, and the cheese they use melts perfectly. Their house made potato chips come in a variety of flavors (I tried the Dressed version: tossed with rosemary, garlic and a touch of truffle oil). Add to the fact that Oak Street B&B serves beer and you have yourself a perfect meal. The other B in Oak Street B&B is their selection of breakfast items. Walk

into this restaurant and you’ll notice the trappings are similar to any casual diner, but the breakfast menu is certainly in the gourmet category. Our group sampled the Housemade Roast Beef Hash (slow roasted beef brisket sauteed with onions & potatoes until crisp, finished with hollandaise). It was decadent and delicious. They also carry other signature items, like the Eggs Benedicto, which contains fresh Westerly Packing Soupy (shorthand for Italian Sopressata). The owner explained that it’s a real tradition in Westerly for people to get together to make Soupy and do their own curing. The Portuguese Toast also caught our eye: battered with cinnamon, vanilla and cornflakes, served with warm syrup. You can also “stuff it” with bacon and cream cheese. Good morning! And for those who live in the Westerly area Oak Street B&B also delivers starting at 9am, which is as close to breakfast-in-bed as it comes. For those outside of town, it is certainly worth the drive. And definitely try the Fried Oreos served with ice cream... just do it.

This is the time of the year that winter starts to feel tangible. The dreaded winter brings traffic-crippling polar vortexes and nor’easters, shortened days and eternal cold. But in the wasteland of ice and snow, we have turkey and football (or turducken and football?) on Thanksgiving and opening presents on Christmas morning to look forward to. Even as great as the holidays are, though, making them happen is pure madness and stress. Once the season is in full gear, everyone is going to need occasional distraction, and maybe even perspective for those why-am-I-bothering moments. Both are in plentiful supply. Ocean State Theatre Company With Christmas family-togetherness in mind, the Ocean State Theatre Company is producing an adaptation of Meet Me in St. Louis from December 3-28. The story follows the Smith clan during the 1904 World’s Fair, chronicling the children’s romantic interests and how they deal with the prospect of being torn away from them. Everything culminates on Christmas Eve. Side note: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is originally from here. This version was performed by Judy Garland and predates Frank Sinatra’s. The Mill at Shady Lea’s Open Studios returns for its 17th year Textiles are woven on looms at the Shady Lea Mill just as they were when the factory was originally established along North Kingstown’s Mattatuxet River in 1820, but there’s a whole lot else going on at the millturned-artists-community nearly 200 years later. Now in its 17th year, The Mill at Shady Lea’s Open Studios event began as a bit of homespun public relations by founder Andy Reisert, who wanted to ease any concerns among the mill’s neighbors about what the “hippies” were doing in the building after his manufacturing business, a company that made staples, shut down. Over the years, the tenant list has grown to include more than 40 artists producing everything from pottery and blown glass to photography, sculpture and paintings to jewelry and guitars. And since the old mill is said to be haunted, it’s only appropriate that the paranormal investigation group GHOSTS also calls Shady Lea home. Two dozen or more of these artists will take part in the 2014 Open Studios event, including crowd favorites like Anchor Bend Glassworks, clockmaker Richard Fyans, weaver Suzy Bellanger, musician Andrew Grant, the GHOSTS team, potters Connie Payne, Donna Thompson, and Sue Greene, and sisters Judy Schaefer (a sculptor and weaver) and Jo-Anna Melrose (who paints and produces etchings and monotype prints). Artists conduct demonstrations or presentations and provide visitors with snacks and drinks, as well as offering their products for sale during this once-per-year event. Dan Collins, founder of Shady Lea Guitars, says the Open Studios event has been great for business, especially since the business does no formal advertising for its custom-built guitars and guitar-building classes. “People walk through and spread the word for us,” he says. In addition to explaining their work and showing how wood is bent to

create the curved side of a guitar, apprentice luthier and Julliard-trained musician and singer Ariel Rose Bodman may show off her own talents on the shop’s small stage, which this year will feature performances by the folk group Cannibal Ramblers and satirical singer Jacob Haller. “It’s so much fun,” says Bodman, noting that about 500 people came through the Shady Lea Guitars studio during the 2013 event. Donna Dunn, whose Rhode Island Spa Products utilize mostly locally grown and produced agricultural products in its soaps, bath salts, and lotions, makes special soaps scented with pumpkin and cinnamon to sell as stocking stuffer during Open Studios, which not coincidentally is scheduled in the middle of the holiday shopping season. Repeat visitors look forward to chatting with Dunn over a cup of tea beside her in-studio fireplace. “It’s a very busy event for sales,” Dunn says. “People love to come in and see how and where things are made, and to talk to the artists.” Visitors to Shady Lea aren’t limited to one weekend per year: although there are no set hours, you can simply knock on studio doors and see

who is around. Most artists welcome the occasional visitor, according to mill owner and Open Studios coordinator Lynn Krim, and some even put materials and items for sale outside their doors. A walk around the nearly 200-year-old mill not only reveals hints of its past history (look for the staples embedded in the wooden floors, for example), but also an opportunity to browse the work of artist Edwin Roche, who uses one section of the whitewashed hallway as an impromptu gallery for his paintings.
