Home for the Holidays I try to avoid chain restaurants and retailers as much as possible. Part of this is because of my job – when I’m constantly researching and writing about exciting new restaurants and stores run by people who are passionate about what they do, it’s easy to go support them. Part of this, though, is because Rhode Island is especially blessed with a population loaded with talented chefs, passionate local growers, gifted artists, savvy boutique owners who provide ample opportunity to enjoy their work. During the holidays, though, it becomes a little harder. We’re all searching for ways to stretch our holiday budgets, and to do everything we need to do to prep for the festivities in the shortest amount
of time. That’s why, this month, we’ve done the hard work for you. A Locavore’s Holiday is your guide to celebrating a completely locally-sourced holiday, from your tree and decorations to the feast your family will gather around. I bet you can do it all – from shopping to baking to wrapping to celebrating – without having to set foot in a chain retailer. Hand-Forged for Christmas The South County Museum keeps traditions alive

Material gifts are great and all, but their limited shelf lives mean they will eventually be replaced or discarded. Experiences and memories, that’s what you want to give – something that sticks with someone for years or helps broaden their knowledge of life. For example, imagine giving someone the opportunity to swing wild a mallet after removing metal from a coal-fired forge. And after all that swinging, the mallet wielder can take home their hand-forged creation, giving them a physical representation of what they learned and experienced. Now that – well, that’s a gift worth giving, and it’s exactly what South County Museum is offering with their Introduction to Blacksmithing class. Hosted on the grounds of the museum, in their Peter Crolius Blacksmith Shop, the class provides participants with tools and hands-on training in a safe environment. (For less mallet swinging, they are also offering an Introduction to Letterpress Printing class.) Give the Gift of Goodwill The holidays are cause for celebration, and what better way to celebrate a season of giving than by contributing to organizations that help those in need of a little Christmas comfort? The WARM Center in Westerly is a 19 bed emergency shelter and soup kitchen and is one of the only institutions providing shelter services to adult men and women in South County and Southeastern CT. The Center always accepts monetary donations to be delegated on a need basis, or you can donate to a specific Center program. Food donations are also accepted, but some restrictions apply, and all meals must be delivered by 5pm on your scheduled day. While the WARM Center itself does not take clothing, Attire for Hire, which is located next to the WARM shelter, accepts laundered/dry-cleaned clothing appropriate for men and women returning to the workforce. A New Roost for a Non-Profit In the animal kingdom, the undisputed rulers are cats and dogs - more specifically, puppies and kitties. Everyone wants one for Christmas, or wants to get one for their child, or wants to snuggle with one while falling asleep. But this kind of attention placed solely on these two animals means that many other domestic species fall to the wayside - and that’s exactly what is happening to the avians of Lazicki’s Bird House & Rescue, located in Wakefield. For 17 years, this all-volunteer, non-profit organization has been saving abused and abandoned birds, and eventually re-homing them with appropriate families. Now, due to scheduled demolition of the commercial building housing the organization, they must re-home themselves, and they’re asking for donations to help “offset the cost of higher rent, moving the birds to their new location and any renovations necessary.” At the time of writing, Lazicki’s Bird House & Rescue had already raised $10,225, with more than 40 days left until the fundraiser ends on December 30. All donations go toward helping the organization continue its mission of rescuing, rehabilitating and adopting out birds. Noël Knitting ‘Tis the season of giving and a fall donations drive is the perfect way to do so. Cathleen Naughton Associates is a local home health care provider hosting a fundraiser collecting hats, scarves, blankets and knitted goods. All proceeds will go directly to Rhode Islanders who may not have shelter this winter so no donation is too small. Through the month of December, donations will be collected to warm the less fortunate in time for the coldest months. The recipients will be House of Hope, Amos House, the Domestic Violence Center of South Country, Welcome House and the North Kingstown Food Pantry.

A Pajama Holiday Drive Warms the Body and Soul

Narragansett’s Jacki Rainer just launched her stylish scarf line
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, there’s a new way to keep your gifting local: Narragansett-based textile designer Jacki Rainer has just launched a new line of infinity scarves featuring her original designs. The scarves feature repeating patterns or motifs like elephants and flowers, printed on soft organic cotton. They’re a pretty antidote to New England’s winter chill, but Rainer says her scarves aren’t just about warmth. She views a funky scarf almost like jewelry, a “statement piece” that can spice up even the plainest look. A graduate of URI who also takes classes at RISD, Rainer says she draws inspiration from travel and the natural beauty of southern Rhode Island – especially the beaches. A five-week trip to India earlier this year informed her most recent designs, which she based on woodblock prints she saw there. Rather than traditional woodcuttings, Rainer developed her patterns digitally, a process she says is more eco-friendly because it cuts down on waste and harmful dyes. Rainer launched her website and Etsy store JARA last month. Chances are you’ve outgrown the more traditional pajama party amusements; truth or dare and frozen bras got old around the seventh grade for most of us. But on December 4 from 6-10pm, Beauty and the Bath in Wickford has some updated activities we can all get behind: discounts, booze and – best of all – a good cause. It’s technically optional to wear your pajamas to the beauty boutique’s holiday party, as long as you bring some to donate. For the 17th year, the shop is collecting new kids pajamas and books for kids in need. The donations go to the Pajama Program, which uses them to help provide a happy bedtime to kids in group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities. Along with the warm fuzzies, customers can enjoy a 20% discount at the store, hors d’oeuvres from local chefs, wine and “grown-up hot chocolate” during the event. Visitors who bring donations also get a Beauty and the Bath goody bag and a raffle ticket for prizes from other local shops. One South County couple isn’t afraid to break the rules Ellen Cesario Ferns has been in the business of making other people’s spaces feel warm and welcoming for years. As the proprietor of Store Four in Wakefield, it seemed only natural she and husband Robert Ferns looked to create the same ambiance in their own home. “We really like to entertain, so the way we’d use space was really important to us,” says Ellen. The couple moved into the 18-year-old South Kingstown home seven years ago, although the layout was something they didn’t necessarily have on their wish list. “I originally thought I wanted an open kitchen and open floor plan, but this house just spoke to us,” she says. Instead of making any major changes right after moving in, however, the couple decided to live in the house for a while to adapt to their new surroundings and identify spaces they needed to modify to best suit their
taste and lifestyle. For example, the couple had a dining area in the kitchen they just weren’t using for meals as they often used their dining room. Ellen and Bob re-invented the space as an intimate seating area to enjoy a cup of coffee or relax with a magazine. Ellen explains, “We considered how we used our space. We have an island with stools if you want to eat in there.” While many of today’s homeowners are eschewing traditional dining rooms, Ellen and Bob are embracing theirs, designing it with a decidedly unfussy aesthetic. “It’s great because you can cook, the kitchen doesn’t have to be cleaned right away and you can sit in the dining room and enjoy,” Ellen says with a laugh. Formal living rooms are also underutilized by many of today’s homeowners, and Ellen and Bob found themselves in a similar quandary. “We never used it.
We just didn’t go in there because of the way the furniture was placed,” she says. Another reason they didn’t use it is because the space dictates use as a formal living room, so they naturally adhered to the role the room was supposed to play. “But we found we had needs for this room,” she says. So, in an unconventional twist, the two considered their personal interests and created a multi-use room. “It’s an office, music room and a cocktailing room,” explains Ellen. “When my husband and I got married, we had a band that played Frank Sinatra music, so we’re a throwback a little bit. That’s our personalities.” She says that the room is the perfect place for the couple to come together after a long day of work, pour a glass of wine or mix a cocktail and talk about their day. Bob, a talented musician, often picks up the guitar and plays some tunes. “We’re so excited about it. My husband looked at me recently and
said, ‘I love this room.’” The space embodies their “do what you love” philosophy. “It’s the same thing with the eat-in kitchen – there’s what they intended the room to be, but it doesn’t have to be. I tell this to customers too. What is it you ascertain doing in the space, or what do you want to do in the space?” It’s also about personalizing each space, she says, and Ellen practices what she preaches. In order to merge the trio of purposes that unfolds in the former living room into one cohesive aesthetic, she hand-picked a mix of old and new pieces that worked together unexpectedly harmoniously. An antique table that serves as Ellen’s desk is juxtaposed by a modern lamp, while a pair of swivel chairs in a classic hounds tooth pattern, which coincidentally is a modern design trend, adds dimension. Accessories that are equally fashionable and functional, like the tray that was a December 2013 | SO RHODE ISLAND

wedding gift they use for cordial bottles, give the room depth and character. “A lot of times you have the furniture but you have to rethink how to use it,” she advises. “I always had a tagline for the store: Store Four, A Lifestyle Experience, because we want people to come in to enhance your lifestyle. Over the years, I realized when doing our own home, that oftentimes your needs change. I had a few customers who asked me to help them pull together their own home and it’s turned into this new business, Décor Four.” This secondary business, an arm of the original Store Four, offers design services that capitalize on Ellen’s

longtime experience in the home décor industry and her ability to blend old pieces and new. “I found there was a need for it. I’ve styled people’s tables for parties and realized to them, doing that can be stressful, but for me, its fun.” Up until now, Décor Four has mostly been a via word of mouth venture, but as we’re in the midst of the holiday season, the timing is ideal for South County residents and beyond. “It’s something I’m passionate about because I can help people. Sometimes people are looking for a little color and you can add a pillow and a throw and it changes the way you look at the whole room. I was an art
major in college, so I have this intrinsic need to design,” she says. “People think you have to be a certain way, but sometimes you have to break the rules.” Since Store Four seemingly offers something for everyone with a wide spectrum of décor and accessories, it might be hard to pinpoint Ellen’s own personal style, but she reveals her aesthetic is a classic meets modern hybrid. “My family has had businesses in this town forever and I have a real sense of liking where I am from, and I still appreciate how we came here and when things were handmade and hand done.” In their home, Ellen and Bob have a
few family heirlooms that carry much more sentimental value than monetary worth. “People can see we appreciate that part of our lives. There’s a huge painting that used to hang in my grandparents living room and we tried to design around it. It may not have been something I would have bought, but we love it. … Our house is definitely styled in a way we love but we definitely don’t want people to think it’s a museum.”

Beauty by Machine A foray into laser skin treatments

When I was younger, I had great skin. Really great skin. People used to stop me pretty regularly to comment on my unblemished, ivory complexion. But now that I’m firmly in my 30s, I’ve learned that they call it a “youthful glow” for a reason. Like it or not, mine is fading into skin concerns. I get hormonal breakouts like nobody’s business now, which leave unpleasant discolorations in their wake. I cover them well enough with makeup, but I hate them with this other new thing I’m getting, which I like to call “the bitter resentment of age.” Still, I had never considered getting a laser skin treatment. Those seemed so drastic, like they were only for serious problems like major skin issues or turning 50. In fact, when I went to Agape, I thought I was going there for one of their fancy facials. But when I sat down with Medical Aesthetician Amy Medeiros for my consultation, wearing no makeup, the horror of my breakout* in full force in the glaring light of day, she had another suggestion: Elos Laser Skin Rejuvenation. Elos, she promised, would improve those dark spots, as well as improve sun damage, dark circles, crow’s feet, future breakouts and the overall elasticity and glow of my skin. Sign me up, I said, and made an appointment to come back for laser skin treatment. (*Ok, I may be overstating this slightly. But two big, yucky blemishes are a lot

for someone who didn’t even have that many for the entire four years of high school. Feel bad for me yet? I thought so.) Here’s how it works: you go in, have your face slathered in a thick coat of numbing gel, and then wait half an hour for the dual purpose of desensitizing your face and letting your mind do its absolute worst with how you’re about to get your skin lasered off and come out looking like an unwrapped mummy in a horror movie. Oh, that’s just me? Weird. When I was good and numb, Amy came to get me. I was nervous. Really nervous. But she explained that the waiting was necessary. Lasers are hot. They’re made of supercharged light particles. I definitely didn’t want the laser without the gel, she said. And when she applied the first little zap to my forehead and I barely felt anything, I knew she was right. She went over my face, zapping each freckle and sun spot. It was quick and not very painful at all. The whole process took maybe 15 minutes. She explained that my discolored spots would get darker (but that nobody would notice except me, which was completely true) and then come off naturally in about a week. I’d need to come back for one or two more visits to get the full effect. When I left, my skin was tender for a few hours, like I was getting a sunburn. I could wear makeup immediately, and
felt fine by that night. In a couple of days, I noticed the darkening effect, followed a few days later by a noticeable lessening of my freckles. My skin looked nicer, too, and when that time of the month came around, my breakout was much smaller and more manageable than it had been before. A month later, I went back for my second treatment. This time, I knew what to expect, and Amy did a more serious application on my dark circles. Knowing that it would hurt for a minute but that it would make a big difference in the long run, I was all for it. We did our 15 minutes of blue light zapping. This time, when I left, I wasn’t tender at all, and the after-effect was remarkable. My skin looks like it did 10 years ago, back in the halcyon days of youthful glow. Almost all of my discolorations are gone, my breakouts barely exist, and my skin tone is clear and glowing. To maintain this, I’m willing to put in a few minutes and some zaps every couple of months. It turns out laser skin treatments are much less drastic – and much more of a thing I want in my life – after all.

Have A Seat The art of turning old furniture new again Drew Wheelan spent his childhood shadowing his mother, Grace, in the barn while she worked. It was her business, The Seating Arrangement, where he worked during high school to earn his spending money. Now, Drew has taken over the family business and we sit down to talk to him about furniture, fabric and the Kennedys. What’s the best part about The Seating Arrangement? The most gratifying thing about this business is the impact I have in helping to keep things out of the landfill. It’s about taking old items and making them beautiful again, supporting the local economy and re-using versus importing new things. Every job is different. There’s always a new challenge. I could be working on a 19th century Victorian settee or a mid-century modern Danish chair – it’s a learning process and there’s always a new challenge. Do most customers want to totally revamp a piece, or do they look to preserve its style? The majority of my customers want to keep the style of the piece. Others might come in with a contemporary Ethan Allen and want to customize it to what they already have. Still, some pieces I’ve done structural cut downs, reshaping of backs and taken the piece in different direction. We’ve all heard of a statement piece and its value in a room. What’s your take on making a statement when it comes to furniture? Much of my work comes from people trying to repurpose furniture that is structurally sound. With a solid foundation, there are many ways to change a piece and make it unique. Re-upholstery is one of those ways. I carry a wide variety of fabrics in the store. It’s a way for a customer to be brought into the process instead of just going to a store and having limited choices. When did you learn to sew? I actually started a snowboard clothing company when he was 17. That was when I really cut my teeth at sewing. Actually, I brought three sewing machines to my college dorm with me, it

was pretty ridiculous. I still make my own snowboard clothing, but where I’m really at creatively is working to broaden The Seating Arrangement. Where exactly do you want to take The Seating Arrangement? My dream is to transition the business into an all-encompassing design and home goods manufacturer. Recently, we set up a new facility in the old Peace Dale Processing Mill, just up the street from our main location. We work on most of our large jobs up there and soon we’ll be setting up screenprinting facilities and a full work room. We’re currently working with a sewing house in Providence to produce several of our handbag designs under the label “artifact,” which is the name of our gallery in front of the shop. We just had our first big show, which showcased local painters, potter, sculptors and a furniture builder. It was a huge success and I’m excited for how the future is shaping up. What’s been one of your most memorable projects thus far? I was lucky enough to be home when
my mom, Grace, was working on a project at Hammersmith Farm. The furniture we reupholstered was the Kennedys’ fabric – they actually sat on it! That was the most historically rewarding project and to do with my mom was very neat. My mom still consults with me. Even though she retired two years ago, she couldn’t stay away. I still hang out with her every day. What should people consider before they call you to take on a project? It’s good to consider what your furniture is really worth. It’s spending a bit extra for something solid wood that will last 30 years instead of five. Do you want to fill a landfill or fill your children’s homes with the furniture that your children had? We preserve family heirlooms and history and make solid furniture beautiful.

Deliciously Classic A new Wakefield restaurant serves fresh twists on old favorites meals can be a double-edged sword. When done well, with just a little variation here and there, it can be a welcome friend at the end of a long, hard day. But mess with classic too much and it’s not the comfort and draw that you’re looking for. The Chophouse Grille in Wakefield thankfully veers toward the former with its mix of favorites such as clams casino, French onion soup, fish and chips and chophouse cuts of beef. One area where it’s not-so-classic, but that’s more than alright in 2013, is in appearance. Walk into the very conveniently located restaurant right off of Route 1 and your eye is immediately drawn to a beautifully glassed-in wine “cellar.” Wander past the wine and it’s clear this is not the stodgy, dimly lit, dark wood of chophouses past. It’s a very big, very open, multi-level space with two full bars and lots of wood, yes, but not dark, suck-in-all-the-atmosphere wood. There are big-screen, really huge-screen, TVs behind the bar and the artwork on the wall is mainly blown-up antique postcards of the South County area. Overall, a welcoming environment and one that quickly filled up on the weeknight evening we were there. After being seated, we were quickly presented with the – you guessed it, classic – warm bread on the cutting
board with a knife and whipped butter. Nothing wrong with warm bread, and the butter was whipped with honey, which made it a bit on the sweet side. It was a touch messy to slice and butter, but what would you rather, fresh bread or neatness? While enjoying the bread we perused the drink menu. There are a lot of beers at Chophouse Grille, on tap and in bottles, and even more wines, also on tap and of course in bottles. There are a lot of the usual suspects by the glass, but the wine list is pretty extensive and there was a selection of about ten half-bottles, which is a nice alternative to by the glass choices. We started with some local oysters ($1.95 each). The evening we were there, local was Point Judith oysters, which, at about six miles due south of the restaurant, makes them pretty darn local. We also decided since we were trying their Rhode Island shellfish we’d sample the Clams Casino ($8.95). I hesitate to use the word again, but it was certainly a classic preparation. The littlenecks were fresh and not-chewy, the breading had some good flavor and was nicely crisp. We certainly could have gone for more shellfish because it was so well done, but onto another staple, French onion soup ($4.95). Would it be too obvious if I started using synonyms for

classic? It was piping hot with a good size slice of toast on the soup, and lots and lots of melted cheese covering it all. There’s never anything wrong with a good bowl of French onion soup and the only thing that would have made it more like a blast from the past would have been if it were served a two-tone

brown crock. But it was more properly presented in a heavy, white bowl. Onto the main course, and we tried to run the gamut of dishes from Prime Rib to a chicken sandwich, with a little more seafood thrown in too. The SlowRoasted Boneless Prime Rib (16 oz. for $25.95) was a well-prepared and presented dish of meat. It shows a bit though how our palates have grown, along with our restaurants, when that plate of Prime Rib is the least interesting dish at the table. Please don’t misunderstand me, it was a good dish. If you want a plate of red meat, with a sauce and a choice of some great sides – the Fall Roasted Squash ($6.95) was exceptionally good and had some excellent spiced flavor – then certainly go for the Prime Rib or one of the steaks. It’s just that the other three dishes we had were so much more interesting. For example, the Fish & Chips ($14.95) were delicious. The dish came with two big pieces and they weren’t greasy in the least, which can be a problem with the U.K. staple. The batter was made with Narragansett Beer and it was light and crisp, covering some perfectly flaky fish. Along with the fish came the chips, seasoned with

Old Bay, as well as a slaw, which was good and spicy. The Grilled Chicken Panini ($8.95) may have been the table’s favorite, served on pumpernickel toast with a red onion marmalade, brie and apples. Talk about some classic flavors put into good service on something as simple as a chicken sandwich. Finally there was the, dare I say it one more time, classic dish of meatloaf. Chophouse Grill serves a Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf ($15.95). At 12 ounces it was almost as big and thick as a steak. It came with roasted potatoes and asparagus, which were wrapped in bacon for good measure. The sauce with the meatloaf was a touch on the sweet side for some, but certainly not overpowering. By this point we were too stuffed for dessert, but never fear, there was Cheesecake, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Cake, Crème Brûlée, Apple Crisp,
Bread Pudding and ice cream on the dessert list – a couple of which were even described by the Chophouse Grille as classic. There was also a great selection of after dinner drinks. ‘Tis the Season for Chocolate Start the holidays with a candy factory tour Looking for a way to kick off December and usher in the holiday season? Local candy makers, Sweenor’s Chocolates, are hosting an open house on December 1 from 12-5pm. At their Wakefield factory, located at 21 Charles Street, you can get a sneak peak of how they create the company’s signature handmade candy canes. They will also have their enrobing machines (the machines that coat the candy centers in chocolate) up and running. Santa Claus will be making an appearance and guests can try samples of Sweenor’s amazing fudge and hot chocolate. Sweenor’s Chocolates was founded during World War II by Walter Sweenor who began making chocolates in his basement to earn extra money. In 1955, Sweenor opened his first retail location in Garden City, and Walter’s son Bill joined the business in the late ‘50s. In 1979, along with his wife Claire, Bill opened a store in Wakefield and moved the kitchen to Wakefield in 1983. Son Brian joined the business in 1985 and is now the primary candy maker. In 2005, daughter Lisa moved back to RI to run the day-to-day operations of the business. The third and fourth generations of the Sweenor family have continued the tradition of candy making and turned the business into Rhode Island’s largest chocolate manufacturer. Sweenor’s newest product line is a line of 72% Cocoa Chocolate Fruit and Nut Bars. The 72% Cocoa Chocolate Bar (known for its antioxidants and flavonols) is sprinkled with toppings and wrapped in eco-friendly, Rhode Island-made packaging. The bars come in Cherry-Ginger-Walnut, Cranberry-Almond-Pineapple, Roasted Peanut-Raisin, Roasted Coffee Bean and Pistachio-Pumpkin Seed. Sweenor’s candies can be purchased at the company’s two retail locations Wakefield (21 Charles Street) and Garden City (43 Hillside Road, Cranston) or through their website www.sweenorschocolates.com. After the feast, guests will “countdown to midnight” with classic libations and a live band. Castle Hill Inn was a summer hideout for Hollywood royalty in the 1950s, particularly in the years following World War II. In 1956, Grace Kelly stayed at the Inn while filming High Society, the classic musical set in Newport. She enjoyed the quiet beach on the property, which was then renamed Grace Kelly Beach. This year’s New Year’s Eve bash pays tribute to Grace Kelly. Castle Hill also offers a New Year’s package that includes a two-night stay, champagne upon check-in, daily breakfast and afternoon tea and a lavish five-course New Year’s Eve dinner with a champagne toast. Guests will countdown to the New Year at an extravagant, 1950s-era themed celebration and even have the opportunity to participate in dancing classes before the big party. The package also includes brunch on New Year’s Day, a late checkout and a $150 dining credit to any Newport Restaurant Group location. The package starts at $1,226.00 plus tax and is available

Pat Brown is the owner and chef at Giro’s Hometown Grille in Peace Dale, where he’s dishing out fresh, fromscratch food, including creative takes on classic sandwiches, soups, pasta dishes and seafood. what sets giro’s apart? Pretty simply: Everything is made to order, and made in-house from scratch. Nothing comes pre-made. We’re in the business of hospitality, and like to think of the customer as the boss. If a customer wants something that isn’t on the menu and we have it in the kitchen, we’ll make it.

how would you describe your food? It’s definitely comfort food. We like to use flavors that people know and love, but present them in a creative way. For example, we make an artichoke dip from scratch with four kinds of cheese and then use that as a base for our artichoke and spinach soup. what inspired the concept for giro’s? Before opening Giro’s, I’ve owned three restaurants, all in Florida. But I was born and raised here in Rhode Island and I wanted to come back, so I bought Giro’s. The restaurant has been here since 1933, and I’m the fifth owner. It has changed concepts countless times, and was even a Chinese-and-American restaurant, with sweet and sour chicken and spaghetti and meatballs. do you incorporate seasonality into your menu? Absolutely. Our main menu stays the same year round, but we’re constantly
running specials, many of them based on the season. We’ve been using a lot of pumpkin and fall ingredients lately. I understand that you like to emphasize your use of local seafood. It’s all a matter of getting the freshest food available. We like to get our fish right off the boats when possible, and it makes a huge difference in the food. Plus we are in Rhode Island. We have some of the best fish you can get right here. People love local flounder and cod, and they’re available year round. One of my favorite seafood items to work with are scallops, and we sell a lot of scallops at Giro’s. what is the most your popular dish? That’s a tough one, but one thing we really sell a lot of is Italian sandwiches: Prosciutto, capicola, hot peppers, cheese and Italian dressing on a fresh baguette. what does the future look like for giro’s? anything exciting coming up? Right now, we’re just going with the flow, feeling out what the customers want and changing every day to make it happen. We have live music starting soon, so we’re excited about that, but we plan on constantly changing to make the experience better for our diners.

Sometimes, the key to artistic success is the alliance of skill with the perfect medium. It may be a little soon to pigeonhole Jessica Nalbandian – who only recently graduated URI with an art major – but her recent foray into linocut prints has produced some of this young artist’s most polished and praised works. Like most students, Jessica tried her hand at multiple forms and techniques in art classes and as a member of the art club at North Kingstown High School, where she graduated in 2008. A painter first, Jessica didn’t even like printing when she first took a class in the medium in college, but soon grew to love linotyping, a variation on woodcut that involves cutting into sheets of linoleum (yes, the same stuff used for flooring) to create reverse images for printing. Jessica recognized early on that being an artist requires perseverance and, usually, struggle. In college, her minor in English and a stint at URI’s award-winning student newspaper The Good 5-Cent Cigar, were part of a broader strategy: “I’ve always wanted to be a writer and an illustrator,” she says. “There’s so many things I want to do, but I knew I wanted
to keep drawing and painting even if it was not for a living.” Despite a 50-hour-a-week work schedule which includes jobs as an assistant teacher at the Goddard School in South Kingstown and the Ruff Life pet daycare program in North Kingstown, she found time to put together a gallery show that’s on display through the end of the year at the BankRI branch in North Kingstown. The exhibit highlights include Jessica’s signature piece to date: a linocut of a woman talking on a banana phone. Before you start thinking Raffi, however, this is no child’s play: the work has a noir-ish, if somewhat whimsical, feel, and is intended as a commentary on overwork in a “cubicle world” office environment. It’s also reflective of her self-described dark side and delight in strange subject matter – another linocut, of a bat and grapes, is called “Predator vs. Prey,” for example. On the other end of the spectrum are prints of a giraffe, and a Dali-esque dog wearing sunglasses (it’s her miniature schnauzer, Shelby), two favorites of the animal-loving artist. Jessica has also staged a 40-piece exhibit at the Bill Krul Gallery in
Narragansett and displayed her work at the former Skyleen Mustang steampunk clothing store in East Greenwich, the Cranston Art Festival and the annual Hempfest at URI. Despite her heavy workload, she tries to put in at least 15 minutes per day on her artwork, and spends entire days painting or printing when she can find the time. “I live by my planner,” she jokes. Will art become her career? Jessica isn’t ready to commit. “I’m getting more recognition than I thought,” she says. “Just getting into stores and galleries is a good feeling, even if that’s all it turns out to be.” Still, she admits: “I’d also be happy working 40 hours a week doing art. That would be amazing.”
