Fashion Forward Narragansett designer Naomi Sauro wants to help every woman look her best

It’s not often a fashion designer calls you and says, “I’d love to make you a dress.” But when it happens – and really, you should do your best to make that happen as much as possible – you don’t say no. At least I didn’t. That’s how I found myself in various states of undress in my office with Naomi Sauro. Wait, that sounds wrong. But it was so, so right. “I was in retail for ten years prior to this, and was really feeling that there was a lot of missed opportunity in clothing, especially for women’s sizes,” Naomi says. “That’s how I started.” She specializes in women’s sizes, but really, that’s just about everyone. “I say the average woman, because the average woman is a size 12,” she explains. “I love women’s sizes because there aren’t as many options out there in the fashion industry for women to shop. I love helping women be able to find something that is sophisticated, fits her personality and hits her in the right way.” But back to me. When Naomi and I started talking about what my ideal garment would be, she started by asking me what was missing in my wardrobe, and what I’d love to add.
Since I had some fashionable events coming up, my mind was in dress-up mode. (Who am I kidding? It’s always in dress-up mode.) I told her I’d been dreaming of a satin party skirt in a jewel tone, something easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion. We set an appointment for the following week in my office. While she often hosts clients in her Narragansett home, Naomi says, “I do what’s convenient for my clients. I like to go to their home because it gives me an idea of who they are. I like to peek into their closet, pick out the colors they really like and the silhouettes they’ve liked in the past.” Naomi came with sketches and fabric samples – both of which were exactly what I wanted. In fact, they were too much of what I wanted. When I couldn’t decide between a mustard-colored satin or a thick, textured plum wool, we decided not to decide, and went with both options. Who says you can’t have everything? Naomi designs both formal gowns and everyday separates, and loves to create pieces that are versatile and can be worn in different ways. She’s also really great at finding a way to

work within every woman’s budget. “I really try to stick to her budget,” she says. “I love that aspect of it.

It gives clients the option to have something unique to them without spending hundreds of dollars.” That, to me, was the biggest surprise. At the end, Naomi delivered to me beautiful skirts that fit me perfectly, and cost less than they would have at any average mall retailer. And hopefully one day, that’s where you’ll find her. “I would love to have my own store that has a custom side where clients can come in for fittings, whether they’re looking for an everyday piece or a special occasion dress, and create a collection every season for people to come in and shop ready to wear,” she says. A Local Author Offers a Glimpse Into Her Fictional Worlds There are few things better than escaping into the world of good books. This Memorial Day weekend, Rhode Island based author Marie Force is offering readers the chance to visit Newport for a chance to experience first hand the setting of her captivating stories. The event, which will take place May 23-26, was created in response to readers who
expressed interest in visiting the place Marie writes about in her books. “I really wanted to give my readers a first-hand experience with the places I write about in my books: Newport and Block Island in particular,” Marie says. “The Reader Weekend came from years of hearing the readers say they’d sure love to come to
Rhode Island. We’re hoping to make it a somewhat regular event.” The weekend will feature tours of Newport, Marie’s hometown and the setting for her romance novels: Treading Water, Georgia on My Mind, The Fall and Love at First Flight. Marie also has a series of novels called The Gansett Island series, which is set among the beach bluffs and
lighthouses of southern Rhode Island and Block Island. The weekend will also feature a day on Block Island to experience the places that inspire her stories. I
remember the first time I looked at an oyster on the half shell. In fact, it may have been looking at me. You realize they are alive when you eat them, right? I gently added a bit of cocktail sauce, a squeeze of lemon, opened my mouth and let it slide on down. To my (grateful) surprise, it stayed down, and I actually liked it. So, I had another, and another. And before I knew it, I had scarfed down a half dozen, all on my own. This seems to be the overwhelming response to the booming oyster industry in South County. As more salt ponds fill with oysters, we have more to eat, and that is a very good thing. More and more raw bars and buck a shuck options are popping up, and hopefully, South County can keep up with the demand. We’ve got a taste for oysters, and it’s not going anywhere. Here are some places you can go to to get your fill of these salty, savory and slightly sweet treats. At the Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar, they have Buck a Shuck every Sunday through Thursday from 3-5pm. You can get five fresh oysters for $5. If that doesn’t make your mouth water, I don’t know what will. In fact, I’m pretty sure I have $10 to drop on that sweet deal. And if oysters on the half shell aren’t your thing, dig into their Fried Oyster Appetizer ($12.95) or their Oyster Po’ Boy ($18.95). 250 Main Street, East Greenwich. 398-2462, www.greenwichbayoysterbar.com. If you’re a little further south, head

And we as consumers can actually choose which oysters we develop preferences for. Because believe it or not, oysters grown in Potter Pond have a different flavor profile than those grown in Point Judith Pond or Ninigret Pond. There is always an emphasis on eating local. But now you can eat local while eating something that you know is good for the environment. For Caroline Naughton Rumowicz, work begins and ends with family. Her business, Cathleen Naughton Associates, a visting nurse service and elder care resource, was started by her mother and is now in its second generation of being a female-owned, family business. “I’m following in my mother’s footsteps,” Caroline says. “I started in 1978 working with her. I worked part time through college and decided that I was in for the long run.” Caroline carries the family philosophy of customer service through her daily work, helping other local families in times of difficulty. Cathleen Naughton Associates is an elder care resource, providing in-home care to match any degree of need, whether that’s a two-hour weekly visit or round the clock nursing. “Our agency has evolved over the years from being a staffing company, to a private duty health care agency, to a skilled visiting nursing program and then to a combination of all of them,” Caroline says. “Now we’ve started a non-medical division to make the coverage complete for seniors and baby boomers.” The agency’s visiting nurses can provide medication and nutrition counseling, wound care, diabetic teaching and education on disease management. They can also provide in-home rehabilitation services, including physical and occupational therapy. Cathleen Naughton Associates also provides the in-home services of a Masterslevel Social Worker, including counseling for the patient and family, and assessment of mental functioning associated with the dementia, anxiety and depression so common in the aging population. Social workers can also provide crisis intervention and support to families during transition into alternate living situations and through difficult times in nursing care. “We’re a resource for those who are in crisis, or difficult health care situations,” Caroline explains. “We can actually sometimes make it better.” And really, making it better during difficult times is what the agency is all about. “We’re compassionate listeners,” Caroline says. “We’re problem solvers – a total resource for all health and homerelated services.” Cathleen Naughton is also committed to helping the community in times of need. “As a company, we have a lot to be thankful for,” Caroline explains. “Our mission includes giving back to the community on a regular basis.” The company commits to two giving programs annually: recipients include the South County Domestic Violence Resource Center, North Kingstown Food Pantry and Welcome House in Peacedale. However, it’s not all about crises. Cathleen Naughton Associates can also simply provide a helping hand. Home support allows seniors to stay in their homes longer, providing personal care, bath service, help with therapeutic exercise,

meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders and shopping. Their Homemaker Companions provide transportation, and can even be travel companions. Their concierge service helps ease the burdens of daily life when errands, shopping and cooking become daunting. “We’re an all-inclusive service to help with aging parents and those little details of life that get in the way,” Caroline says. Caroline graduated from Bryant with a BS in
business administration, and with a Masters in health services administration from Salve Regina. She’s a 2010 graduate of Leadership Rhode Island, and received the Distinguished Graduate Alumni award from Salve in 2013. She and her husband Greg have two daughters, Lydia and Grace, one dog, one cat and two guinea pigs. As she says, “I take an interest in every client that comes to our company and want to be a resource for you, your parents and, if need be, your kids.”

Soozie Sundlun has been capturing life’s best memories with a photojournalistic style for decades. Her company, East Greenwich Photo and Studio, was established in 1976 and has been a cherished local business ever since. Known throughout New England for her outstanding bridal photography, Soozie admits that she often gets lost in the special moments. “What I enjoy most are moments where my love of photography allows me to just focus on the person, place or thing that I’m photographing,” she says. With a wide range of subjects, her photos truly say thousands of words. Be it whimsical pet portraits, fun family photography, or high
profile personalities, she manages to integrate an artistic touch into traditional photography. Soozie has been the recipient of several awards for her work and has had the rare opportunity to photograph prominent local and national politicians, including her late husband, Governor Bruce Sundlun. She counts photographing President Obama and President Clinton during their visits to RI as career highlights, and admits that her all-time favorite celebrity shot was Jon Bon Jovi. Even when Marcia J. Boyd lived in Rochester, New York, South County was still her home. A Rhode Island native, the elder law specialist left Rochester a few years ago to return to live in Narragansett and open her law office in Wakefield. Megan Moran is a South County girl true and true. Born and raised in South Kingstown, Megan took a summer job at the Block Island Ferry in 1999. “I thought it would be a fun job while I was on break from college,” she says. Fifteen years later, Megan is still enjoying her Sales Manager position at Interstate Navigation Company (the Ferry’s parent company). In her first year, Megan began to develop the group sales department. Seeing an opportunity to market Block Island to both locals and tourists as a destination, she worked closely with island businesses to create unique group excursions. Her grassroots efforts led her to local schools, churches and recreation departments to pitch Block Island as an ideal location for field trips, reunions, corporate retreats and group outings. The idea took off quickly, and soon she began to refine her pitch and approach national tour operators across the country. That creative, grassroots style has proven to be a successful approach for Megan. A savvy self-starter, Megan took the initiative to have the company’s website revamped in 2011 and started what is now a highly active social media presence. “The travel industry is always changing,” she explains. “Through conferences and trade associations, I’m constantly keeping informed about industry developments.” Staying on top of trends is important, but it’s Megan’s swift and inspired reaction that has kept Block Island a top regional destination in the last decade. One example is a recent trend with leisure travelers who are looking for “one-stop shopping” packages. Megan quickly created vacation packages that included every amenity: ferry tickets, accommodations, dinner, bike rentals and spa services. This summer, she’s excited to debut niche packages, like Lobster & Lighthouses. “The customer experience is our top priority,” she says. “Whether it’s shipping an item, traveling for business, planning a group outing, vacationing for an extended stay or just hopping the ferry for the afternoon, we want the Block Island Ferry to be a memorable part of your Block Island experience.” Megan feels fortunate to have a job where she can promote her beloved home state. “Rhode Island has so much to offer to tourists,” she says. “We’re lucky to have some of the top tourism industry professionals in Providence, Newport and Block Island who creatively present the Ocean State as a destination for conferences, weddings and vacations.” Building relationships and partnerships with industry professionals, as well as working alongside the ferry’s year-round crew, is one of Megan’s favorite parts of her job. “I just love the collaboration,” she explains. In 2012, the United Chamber of Southern Rhode Island recognized her as one of the “Brightest Stars of Southern Rhode Island.”

A gem in North Kingstown, filled with textiles and wallpapers from nearly 200 companies, the store carries exclusive lines like Ralph Lauren, William Morris, Schumaker and Thibaut. Deanna Celico has owned the Fabric Gallery for 24 years. “My place is like a design center,” she says. “I have so many companies represented,

Briana Hill is always up for a good challenge. As the Vice President of Rhode Island Rentals, customers turn to her to create picture-perfect events. “My customers bring me torn-out pages from magazines all the time, “ she explains. “I love to recreate those images, especially under budget.” Recreating images found in glossy magazines and on inspiration boards on Pinterest is indeed a welcome challenge for Briana and her team at Rhode Island Rentals, but so is creating a theme or concept from scratch. “I love using different colors, chairs and dishes to create a one-of-akind, customized look,” she says. D
id you know that Rhode Island’s only public port is regularly rated as one of the top 10 auto importers in the U.S.? Or that when you tear open a bag of Frito Lays, that silver lining was likely made right here in the Ocean State? It’s all happening at the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown. The Park is home to The Port of Davisville, which in 2013 saw more than 172,000 autos arrive by sea to be processed and distributed by auto importer North Atlantic Distribution (NORAD), with another 30,000 coming through the Park on rail or truck. Long-term Park tenant Toray Plastics produces those potato chip bag linings as well as other thin plastics and showcases one of the largest arrays of solar land panels in the state. There are over 175 companies covering a broad range of industries in the Park, in addition to goodies like an airport, a railroad, a golf course, four public beaches, a ferry service to Martha’s Vineyard and two museums (see sidebar). All of this is taking place on the site of a former Navy air base and Naval Construction Battalion Center. Acting on behalf of the state, the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) has transformed the 3,207 acres into a flourishing beacon of economic innovation and growth in just a few short years. Steven J. King, P.E., the managing director of the QDC, is a driving force behind the re-birth of the Park. “When I first began working at Quonset almost 16 years ago,” he remembers, “the Park was dramatically different. There were hundreds of vacant Navy buildings and hangars. The roads were in disrepair. There was very little curb appeal and no public beaches.”

To transform the space to a place where businesses can flourish, the QDC tore down 2.4 million square feet of abandoned Navy buildings, laid down
Quonset Development Corporation’s Managing Director Steven King goes over development plans thousands of feet of new railroads and resurfaced miles of new roadways throughout the Park. Today, the Park is operationally self-sufficient, thanks to the revenue generated by leasing parcels of land to business tenants. The Park has its own water supply, wastewater treatment facility, road and railway maintenance services and does not receive any operational funds from the Rhode Island state budget. Giving the space such a huge facelift was not cheap, but it has proven to be a worthwhile investment. Overall, the QDC has invested close to $86
million to upgrade the infrastructure of the Park. The state and federal government have also invested heavily in the park since 1974, contributing more than $660 million. These efforts have been rewarded with private investment in the Park nearly doubling that into well over $1.3 billion. “This proves that if we invest in our state assets, it can create jobs, commerce and provide a sound return on investment,” says King. Out of the 1,500 developable acres, only 293 remain available for leasing. The magic happening at the Quonset Business Park is certainly revealed by the numbers. The Park accounts for almost one in every 50 jobs in Rhode Island. Current figures show the Park has more than 9,500 full and part time workers. 3,500 of these jobs have been created since 2005. (Browse available jobs at www.quonsetjobs.com) According to a study by Bryant University using data from 2011, the Park creates $956.5 million in income for Rhode Island households and $25.5 million in income tax revenues for the state. The study also estimated that by 2021, this could rise to over $1.5 billion in income for households and $40 million in income tax revenues for the state.
The Quonset Business Park is home to a long and diverse collection of tenants. Long-term occupants of the Park include General Dynamics Electric Boat, which employs close to 3,000 workers constructing submarines. Last year, it was announced that Electric Boat has signed on for a 25-year renewal of their lease, the longest in their history at Quonset, which could allow them to double their workforce there over the next ten years. The Park houses Ocean State Job Lot’s corporate headquarters and 500,000 square foot distribution center. In the coming years, they plan on adding an additional 400,000 square feet of space to their facility.

inside Quonset Other tenants include Hayward Industries, a major player in the global pool industry, BB&S, providing pre-treated lumber across New England, and Dominion Diagnostics, which performs thousands of blood and urine analyses for companies each week. The RI Air National Guard maintains a presence and their Blackhawk planes can be seen taking off from the Quonset State Airport, managed by RI Air Corporation. They also bring in private and corporate planes. Martha’s Vineyard Fast Ferry provides a direct link to Martha’s Vineyard. There is a childcare center in the Park and a flourishing retail space featuring Dave’s Marketplace, BankNewport, Kohl’s and frozen yogurt vendor Fresh Waves, among others. Another major feature of the Park is the Port of Davisville, Rhode Island’s only public port. In addition to the Hondas, Audis, Bentleys and Porsches regularly arriving, the Port is also home to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) deep sea research vessel, the Okeanos Explorer, and to Seafreeze Ltd., the largest producer of sea-frozen seafood on the East Coast. The Quonset Business Park has taken off thanks in large part to the lengths the QDC has gone to in streamlining the building process for new tenants. “We work hard to create an environment at Quonset where businesses can grow and succeed,” explains King. “Companies looking to grow want to do it quickly and efficiently.” To deliver this, almost all of the remaining parcels of land still available for development have been pre-permitted and pre-engineered through the QDC’s unique Site Readiness program, which allows new businesses to get shovels in the ground only 90 days after signing a lease. This is a remarkable advantage over the cumbersome process that usually confronts a business looking for a new location. “As part of this program, the QDC has completed all the engineering that a developer would

We have also secured all the baseline permits from various state agencies that a new business would be required to secure,” King explains. This information is available to potential developers, who can easily see a binder for each of the 44 parcels of land still available, detailing the engineering and permits secured and the layout it would allow.

For prospective tenants, having all this leg work already done is a huge selling point. Last month,
the QDC and Governor Chafee announced that convenience food manufacturing giant Greencore USA will be signing a 50-year lease with the Park, bringing 400 new jobs to the state. CEO Liam McClennon is quoted in the Quonset Points newsletter, distributed by the QDC, highlighting the Park’s Site Readiness program as a major selling point, “in searching for the right location, we wanted to find a place where we could build quickly, have easy access to major cities on the East Coast and be in a place where we could grow in the future. Quonset met all those criteria perfectly – it is a world-class facility.”

This ability to respond to the needs of its tenants is part of what distinguishes the Quonset Business Park. After receiving multiple phone calls from start-up businesses looking for small office space, the QDC introduced the Quonset Gateway Offices, constructing an initial facility last year. These office spaces, suitable for 1-20 employees, feature wireless high-speed internet access, a receptionist to field phone calls and visitors for all tenants, shared break areas, outdoor courtyard and a conference room. Spaces are offered at affordable rates with monthto-month leasing opportunities available. Within six weeks of opening, the building was fully leased. The QDC is beginning construction on a second facility this spring and envisions more over the coming years. (Information on leasing can be found at www. quonsetgateway.com) The Quonset Business Park gives Rhode Island a lot to celebrate. “It is particularly satisfying to look back and see the vast improvements to the Park and the impact the new development and job creation has brought to our local economy,” says King. And there is every indication that there is a lot more growth to come.

Steve Gibree’s intelligently designed 2,100 sq. ft. home is the result of creative collaborating
Permanent Vacation Born and bred in the Ocean State, Steve Gibree describes the tale of his Narragansett home as a true Rhode Island story. “I had started the courting process with another builder. Being a true Rhode Islander though, there was a friend of friend,” he says with a laugh. In fact, it was a local lumber supplier that brought Steve and Steve Lawrence of Narragansett’s Lawrence Builders together. Before the two had met, Steve, who lived with his family in a log home in a wooded area of Scituate, had found the perfect place for a second home that celebrated outdoor living in Point Judith’s Breakwater Village, a close-knit coastal enclave with private beaches and quaint cottages. Unfortunately, that perfect place came with an imperfect home –

one that had seen better days and that ultimately, had to be torn down. The idea of managing a from-scratch building project didn’t intimidate Steve, however, as he served as general contractor for the log home project. He turned to architect Gail Hallock of North Kingstown, who was recommended by a neighbor, to design a home that would inspire him and his four children to embrace outdoor living and enjoy the spoils of living by the sea. “It’s one of my favorite houses,” gushes Gail, who had designed some houses in Breakwater Village previously. “I call them my gumdrop houses because they’re so cute and small and you can tack a lot of living in there.” The home’s character, she says, is what sets it apart, adding a layer of charm and distinction.
Gables and dormers, including a curved dormer Steve Lawrence crafted, lends a cottage vibe to the home. With its “L” shaped footprint, the home is deceptively larger then what first meets the eye. “We tried to keep [the front] small so it didn’t overwhelm the neighborhood,” explains Gail, who is currently working with Steve Lawrence on other homes in the neighborhood while applying the same philosophy. “It’s really important they don’t ruin their village with things that are out of character… we’re trying to keep all the scale down so the houses are the right size.” Steve, a father of four, says the “L” shape design allows him to capitalize on the priceless water views. “It’s about family,” he says. “We designed it mostly around the sunset and outdoor living.”
When Steve first approached Gail, he had some specifics in mind. “I was heavily involved,” he concedes. “I definitely wanted an open floor plan and high ceilings because it’s such a small house.” “Steve was a real hands-on owner and really fun to work with,” says Gail. “He brought some really great ideas.” She says that it is part of her process to meet with clients and sketch out their ideas as they brainstorm together. Then they can work to iron out the details, measuring their wants, their needs and their budget. “It’s really important, the builderowner-architect team,” Gail says. Luckily for Steve, the property lays just outside of the major flood zone, which meant building regulations were slightly more lenient than those of other nearby low-lying areas. However, just

like any new construction project, there were challenges along the way. “It took a while to go through the planning and the town, but it went through really smooth,” recalls Steve. “I wasn’t asking for a lot; I went with an appropriate-sized house, about 2,100 sq. ft.” Builder Steve Lawrence agrees, taking a zen-like approach. “It just takes time to go through all that stuff but it’s not a challenge if you play by the rules,” he explains. “It was a great process. The biggest compliment I can give Steve [Lawrence] is we are still friends,” Steve says with a laugh.
The “L” shape divides the house physically but not aesthetically. The design, says Gail, allows for multiple windows in each room and an enclosure-like feel around the deck and expansive patio. The master bedroom and living room enjoy some of the best water views while the kitchen and dining room flow seamlessly together. “The pivot is the kitchen and the stairway, so you have fun walking in,” explains Gail. “When you come in, you have a view over the deck into the water then you go downstairs and still get the view.” A compass rose at the stair landing adds an elegant touch while paying
homage to the home’s waterfront locale. “It’s designed around the outside,” reiterates Steve. To block the wind but not the view, he had glass panels placed around a portion of the patio, while propane-powered Tiki torches direct from Hawaii offer a relaxing vacation-like vibe. “One of the great things, in my opinion, is that there’s a very open house feel. People come all the time… It’s just a great place to be. At any time there could be 20 kids or 20 adults here.” With his boat moored directly out front, it’s easy to hop on board and fish in area coves or as far offshore as Block
Island. If Steve and his children are looking to play closer to home, they go tubing or hop on standup paddleboards and glide over the waves. “There’s nothing better than having the kids out on the paddleboard and all I can hear laughing,” he says. For a village Steve says he never even knew existed, he’s fitting right in. “You get here and your blood pressure goes down.”

Nothing can change my state of mind like great music. I may not be musically inclined, but I appreciate a good tune and the power it holds over me. So, when I was cruising down Main Street in East Greenwich last week and heard the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan swirling off the curb and into my car, I had to check it out. As a blues-rock kind of gal, I expected to find a funky venue complete with a piano, drums, bass guitar and the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan himself strumming his heart away on an electric guitar. What I found instead was equally intriguing – King Guitar, a guitar lover’s paradise, a showroom featuring well over a hundred premium guitars and gear from manufactures such as Tom Anderson, Guitar Works, ESP, EVH, Bogner, Engl, 3 Monkeys, Gibson and more. For you guitar enthusiasts, this shop is the piéce de resistance of all things guitar related. Located in East Greenwich, the store’s atmosphere has a definite studio feel but is melded to that of a sensational art gallery. Owner Brad King has been in the guitar biz for over 20 years and is pretty much a one-man show at the store. “My place is all about one thing – the very best in guitar deals,” he says with cool enthusiasm. “When folks come in to check out our guitars or look for guitar-related info, they’re going to get to chat with me, and I have a real good memory when it comes to remembering people and their guitars.” As someone who has played guitar all of his life, Brad knows his stuff and has made a popular name for himself in the industry because of his immense knowledge of all things guitar. Big name bands from Boston, New York and all over the country seek his expertise on a near daily basis because of his understanding, enthusiasm and super-eclectic inventory, which includes both vintage and cutting-edge high-end guitars. A perfect day in his world is when he can buy a-half-dozen guitars to add to the store’s already impressive range. “Buying guitars to sell is my passion, and helping folks put their hands on that perfect one, no matter how many times they want to stop in and visit, play and try things out before they make a purchase, is what King Guitar is all about,” he says.

King Guitar has been open in its Main Street location for a year now, but guitar buffs know them from their previous Ladd Street digs, which was a mega warehouse for collectible guitars of all makes and models, many from Brad’s on-the-road travels. Before that, King had a popular shop in Virginia and admits that some of his best memories are the long road trips he would take in search of guitars that couldn’t be found anyplace else but in old country pawn shops that still had sawdust dancing on the plank floors. Though the internet and on-line shopping such as eBay changed all that, he still travels regularly between Hollywood and Rhode Island where he continuously adds to his stock with everything from cool, vintage 1 bass guitars to sophisticated boutique items such as Tom Anderson guitars – an Eric Clapton favorite. There is something very casual and relaxing about this place, and though I should feel totally out of my league with such refined inventory like Fender and Gibson, I’m like a kid in a candy shop wanting to hold and touch as many of these awe-inspired beauties as I can. Not knowing one guitar from the next, I’m intrigued by the astounding display of vibrant, soulful guitars artfully arranged in the long, narrow store which totally evokes a ‘50s, retro vibe. In the center aisle is the unexpected – a homey sofa where I plop down easily and scope out these smooth and sleek instruments that surround me. Brad is more than accommodating
with guests like myself, who visit his shop out of interest and who are not necessarily “in the know” about guitars. His low-key and generous manner offer a zero pressure invitation to those who want to hold and even play any guitar in the shop regardless if a sale is going to be made. “We’re not really an outfit for beginners, but I am happy to share my insight and recommendations to anyone in the market for a good guitar,” shares Brad with a grin. It’s the true guitar lover, however, who frequents this unique haven for quality merchandise on a regular basis. The average priced guitar is $1,500 and long-time players visit often because the inventory is so rare, and they know they can pick Brad’s brain for as much info as they want, and that he will always deliver. But regardless of whether customers are window shopping like myself or ready to walk away with a pricey Fender, Jimi Hendrix’s go-to guitar, you’re guaranteed a colorful experience. “Guitars are like paint,” equates Brad. “You need a variety of colored paint to make a room come alive just as you need many different guitar types to capture the range and balance of sound.”

Jennifer Hodge is a Wakefield cosmetologist and has been a big contender in the competitive makeup industry. In fact, she has beautified numerous local celebrities and theatre productions since 1994. A self-proclaimed observer, her background in painting and photography has influenced her makeup techniques. There is more to the makeup industry that meets the eye, and for Jennifer, change is the foundation of her career. When did you realize that cosmetology was the right path for you? I was always artistic – even as a child. I was always drawing or painting something (or someone). I knew I just wanted to be creative, but I also knew I had to make a living. During my time at school, I met a union makeup artist who came in and taught a class on makeup. That was it. That was what I wanted to do. I learned a lot about lighting, working efficiently and how to work with highend clients under a lot of pressure. It wasn’t and it’s still not always easy to invade someone’s physical space and transform them. I always loved painting, only now I am painting people. What is the hottest trend in makeup right now? I’d say light application on the eyes, a strong lip and very glowy skin. People want to look as fresh as possible and love the strong lip look. I’ve done a lot of magenta lips this past year and even the dark black/red look on the lips that some actresses and singers were sporting. It sounds very shocking but when balanced with the rest of the face it is really quite lovely. That’s also a key to good makeup – a balanced application. Why would you choose to use airbrushing over applying liquid foundation? I personally use liquid foundation for daily use. But I do swear by airbrush for weddings, events and photo shoots for the durability and the look of it and the way it translates onto film and video. For weddings, I found the industry was really changing. Brides are getting ready earlier. They make a day out

of prepping for the event - it’s like the party before the party. I needed something that was going to last hours for them when I wasn’t going to be there to touch them up. So when I discovered airbrush it was a life saver. How do you know what colors work best on women? Most women look great in natural colors. I will say the younger you are, you are most likely able to get away with more color and saturation in your products. For my older clients I keep things simple and crisp. Look at movie stars – rarely will you see classic beauties like Meryl Streep or Susan Sarandon very made up. Their look is always very simple and balanced. If someone doesn’t wear a lot of makeup, what are some small things they can do to spruce up their look? The biggest thing I would say is to make sure their brows are filled in, they have curled their lashes and applied mascara – always in black for intensity. The brows frame the face – the human eye is naturally drawn to them first then to your iris. Other things, a small pop of black or brown liner at the top lash line. A pop of concealer under the eye can make you look refreshed in seconds. A sheer gloss or neutral tone lipstick applied with a brush to even
out to the mouth is important and can work wonders as well a pop of cream blush on the apple of the cheek. How can I keep my pores clean? Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser – once at night and once in the morning – and moisturize even if you have oily skin. There are great oil control formulas out there if you are oily. As you age your skin will change sometimes dramatically. Be open to working with and adopting new color schemes, application techniques and cleansing routines as your skin changes. What are your thoughts on makeup? Take a chance – try different products. You are not breaking code if you try a new mascara or a different shade of lipstick. If you don’t like it give it to a friend, your mom or your sister. If you see something you like on someone – ask them. Most people love talking about what’s in their makeup bag.

Seeing Stars Celestial Café serves up unpretentious gourmet in Exeter Celestial Café in Exeter is excellent. Everyone reading this should go, possibly even right this moment since the restaurant is open seven days a week. I’m not kidding – go now if you can. This’ll wait. You can always come back and read later. Still here reading? Oh I get it, you want to know a little bit more before you pop off for lunch or dinner. I can’t say I blame you. There are a lot of mediocre places out there, even in the outstanding culinary destination that is Rhode Island. There are a lot of places out there that claim they serve local ingredients, too, without really telling you what that means. Celestial Café isn’t one of those places. It’s very good, as if you couldn’t tell from my push to get you to go there right now. Okay, so how good is Celestial Café? I had a jambalaya there that was remarkably close to the jambalaya that I make, and I learned how to make my jambalaya from a grandmother in New Orleans. After a bunch of great dishes, that sealed the deal for me. But perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself. Clearly you’re reading for all the facts. So let’s start at the beginning. Celestial Café is in a strip mall on Route 2 in Exeter, one of those spots that’s almost in the middle-of-no-
where, even for Rhode Island. Before you write off the place because of the strip mall part I should point out that most of the finest restaurants in L.A. are in strip malls. So move past the late 20th century architecture and step inside to a very nicely laid out restaurant. The space is about one-third bar, with some seating by the bar, and then tables through the rest of the dining area. It’s pretty big too, and the first reaction is it could be a loud space. But the high ceilings and layout allows for a lot of hubbub without overwhelming noise. It’s a comfortable environment to eat in. We started with drinks and a Basket of Chips ($6). The wine list is basic and hits the more common notes, the beer list leaned toward interesting and intriguing microbrews. The drinks aren’t going to compete with a top notch cocktail bar, but they were well made and not fussy. I especially enjoyed the Cajun Cold River with a pickled green bean and red pepper flakes – simple but delicious. The Chips on the other hand were outstanding. Whoever’s slicing and frying potatoes – from Schartner Farms right up the street – has a steady hand and a great eye because these were some of the most perfect from-scratch potato chips I’ve had. I would’ve liked a bit more salt on

them, hit them right as they come out of the fryer with it, but wow were they fried right. Next we tried the Sweet Potato Wontons ($9) and I had a bowl of the Chowda ($8). I’m not one for the cutesy spellings of chowder. Yes, I know, lots of people around here talk
funny. Fine, so how’s the chowder? Honestly? This was one of the better chowders I’ve had in Rhode Island, if not New England. It didn’t hurt that it’s served with a grilled oyster, which was a complete bonus because the balance of flavors in this chowder was impeccable. The potatoes weren’t over cooked, it was creamy without being heavy, the herbs were a nice touch and not heavy-handed. For $8 I’d get three and call it a dinner. The Sweet Potato Wontons were a huge hit with everyone at the table. They’re definitely on the sweet side, but if you don’t mind that at the start of a meal, dig in. Dinner included the aforementioned Royal St. Jambalaya ($18) for me, along with Chicken Carbonara ($18), Veal Eclipse ($24) and Apple Cider Pork Tenderloin ($21) for my family. Everyone tried everyone’s dish, something that doesn’t always happen (okay, yes, I always try everyone’s dish, but that’s my job, right?). It was one of those meals where we all said, “you have to try this.” The Chicken Carbonara wasn’t a traditional carbonara – it added mushrooms and pea pods and used prosciutto instead of pancetta or guanciale, but

what it sacrificed in tradition worked well. The Veal Eclipse was loaded with bacon, peppers, onions, cheese and a Marsala mushroom sauce, but under all that was some thoroughly breaded and fried veal cutlets with an excellent crispiness. The Apple Cider Pork Tenderloin was also well cooked with a ton of apple and maple flavor cutting through to coat the pork. As I mentioned before, the jambalaya was perfect for me with some tasty Andouille sausage and nicely cooked rice. If I had to make a note I’d suggest using chicken thighs as the chicken can get a little dry when you stew it, but honestly, I am quibbling here. By this point we were all so full and couldn’t be tempted by dessert, but I do have a craving to head back and try the Banana Chocolate
Foster Bread Pudding ($10). I hope by now you’re ready to put down the magazine and head to Exeter. One added bonus to the Celestial Café, they really do try to use as many local ingredients as they can from Rhody Fresh and Narragansett Creamery, to nearby Schartner Farms, as I mentioned, and S&P Gardiner Farm. What’s better than eating food that’s good and helps the local economy?

All About the Brew A new home and national exposure for Charlestown’s Dave’s Coffee Excitement is percolating for

Dave’s Coffee. The Charlestown-based coffee roaster is expanding with a new headquarters in Narragansett and a new retail outlet on South Main Street in Providence. Additionally, they are taking the distribution of their coffee syrups nationally. You can now find it on the shelf of 89 Crate & Barrel stores across the United States. Dave’s Coffee started as a Charlestown coffeehouse in 2003. At the time, founder and company owner David Lanning owned a clothing boutique and began serving coffee to the men waiting for their wives. He then opened an espresso bar in a 1740s farmhouse in Charlestown. The Post Road location has been a favorite for locals and beachgoers alike, roasting up a dozen or so coffees for its customers. David is as passionate today about his products as he was back then. Eleven years since its opening, David still roasts his coffee the oldfashioned way – by hand. The coffee is roasted in a gas-fired roaster custom made for Dave’s by US Roaster Corp of Oklahoma. It’s a 12-kilo drum roaster capable of 30-pound batches. At full capacity, they can roast about 700 pounds of coffee a day while still maintaining complete control over every aspect of the roast. The new headquarters in Narragansett (at 35 Walt’s Way) will soon house

The new retail location at 341 South Main Street in Providence will feature a pour over bar, which will allow customers to order individual portions of microbrew coffees. It will also offer something I’m very excited about – iced coffee on tap! But, the news gets even bigger. Both Dave’s Original Coffee Syrup and Dave’s Vanilla Cold Brew Coffee Syrup are now part of Crate & Barrel’s gourmet food section. The syrup is made from cold-brewed, small-batch roasted organic coffee and natural cane sugar. It contains no artificial sweeteners, no corn syrup and no fake colors. According to David, “Dave’s Coffee is a family company that strives to provide the best craft coffee at fair prices.” In the coming months, they will introduce community events like factory tours in the Narragansett facility and educational coffee cupping sessions. Whaler’s Brewing Company is setting up shop in the Palisades Mill in Peacedale. The brewery is the result of three home-brewers joining together. Josh Dunlap and Andy Tran both grew up in Wakefield and Wesley Staschke joined the duo after finding information about Whaler’s Brewing Company online. Ex-marine Josh heads up the brewing operation; Wesley is the “mad scientist” and head flavor creator, and Andy is “the man behind the curtain,” responsible for the business end of the venture. Their dream of a brewery was funded in part by a Kickstarter campaign which raised $15,000 in startup capital. Whaler’s Brewing Company beers are coming to local restaurants and liquor stores in May, and critics are already raving about their White IPA. It is brewed with white and flaked wheat giving it a hazy/golden appearance. Simcoe and Citra hops are added to

The South Kingstown based distillery took top prize in the World Whiskies Awards in the category of “World’s Best Flavored Whisky,” which featured competition from 350 of the best whisky brands worldwide. The awards were held in London this past March and sponsored by Whisky Magazine, and the win is a huge honor for this small company. Sons of Liberty founder, Mike Reppucci said “It is a tremendous honor to receive the ultimate recognition for our efforts with this year’s “World’s Best” award,
not only for us, but for everyone who helped make this whiskey. From grains to bottle and all the pumpkins in between, so many Rhode Islanders are part of this win.” Amazingly, each batch is infused with 2,500 pounds of fire-roasted, locally-grown pumpkins, which gives it a true pumpkin flavor (not sugary or artificial). Be sure to look for the Pumkin Spice this fall in stores throughout South County. Two chefs combine their creations in North Kingstown The Carriage Inn and Saloon in North Kingstown is newly renovated and just reopened this past February. The restaurant features co-executive chefs Steve Lima and Glenn Toalson who come from very different backgrounds. Steve fell in love with cooking through spending time with his grandmother and trying to recreate her recipes. Glenn was born and raised in Chicago and found his passion after working in a kitchen when he was 14-years-old. Now, both chefs come together over a mutual love of food to create inspired new creations from old classics and locally grown ingredients. Where did you get your start as a chef? Steve: My first job was when I was 14 as a bus boy at Tweet Balzano’s Family restaurant in Bristol. I was a terrible bus boy and wanted to quit. But one day a salad cook didn’t show up and I begged the owner to let me work in the kitchen. I have been in the kitchen ever since. Glenn: I came to Rhode Island to go to Johnson & Wales at 18 to become a chef. I also worked and got my start at Twenty Water Street in East Greenwich while attending school. That’s where everything came together for me as a chef and I honed my skills. Tell me about your journey to the Carriage Inn and Saloon? Steve: In 2007, I opened Crave Seafood Steak in Wakefield. Owning my own restaurant was a dream come true. I planned and envisioned it in my head for years and it truly bothered me when I had to close its doors. I eventually went to work in Newport, but I hoped that someday I would come back to South County to somehow redeem myself. I wanted to come back to South County and prove to myself that I can cook here. So when I saw an ad for an executive chef, I jumped at the opportunity. Glenn: A good friend I played on a softball team with was the owner’s (Greg Kirwan) brother. I talked to him then interviewed.

What is your inspiration both in creating the menu and cooking in general? Steve: My inspiration for the menu was to bring the iconic Carriage Inn back to life and to take classics and reinvent them with a new, fresh perspective.

Glenn: I find inspiration with the ingredients that are easily available. I like to use whichever ingredient is prime during the season. I love classical French cooking but I add a twist. What is a unique dish that we can look forward to? Steve: Although Carriage Inn will always be known for its Prime Rib, I believe that the most interesting dish is the Chicken Wellington. It’s a perfect example of making the old new again. A traditional Wellington is made with a filet mignon topped with spinach, mushroom mousse and foie gras wrapped in a puff pastry. The Carriage Inn’s version is chicken breast with spinach, portabella mushroom and goat cheese in a puff pastry. Glenn: We also make a Bacon Steak with a cranberry maple glaze and a chilled white bean succotash. What seasonal dishes can we look forward to? Steve: For the summer season we have Crab Cakes with a radish and apple slaw. Glenn: We do a lot of work with local farms like Shartner, so the summer menu will have a lot of fresh seasonal vegetables. What is your favorite dish to make? Steve: The Bacon-Wrapped Cod with clam chowder sauce. It starts with bacon wrapped around RI cod, which is then pan seared. For the sauce, I make a reduction out of our RI Style clam chowder and spike it with Sambucca and heavy cream.
Glenn: I would say the Chicken Wellington, we sell quite a bit of it nightly. We also make Prime Rib sliders that are high quality. How are Rhode Island foods incorporated into the menu? Steve: We get oysters from RI (including Matunuck oysters), clams and Point Judith calamari from Town Dock. We get our produce from Belmont Market and use Faming Turtles greens. We believe very much in getting as much as we can locally from as many producers as possible. Glenn: We source out as much as we can, and not just statewide ingredients but ingredients from the same zip code. We serve food that was grown or caught only about three miles away. What is your philosophy on cooking? Steve: Farm-to-table seems to be the latest catch phrase in the restaurant business, but I have always believed that it’s the only way to run a kitchen. As a kid I remember everything was fresh, simple and good. Food doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Glenn: Respect the integrity of the ingredient. Don’t overthink it or overcomplicate it.

Ocean State Theatre Company revives a classic musical The Ocean State Theatre Company (OSTC) is performing the famous novel, movie and 1980 Broadway musical, 42nd Street to celebrate the completion of its first full-season since the organization moved into its new Warwick location in 2012. This ageless classic tells the story of an aspiring young chorus girl who has to save the show after the lead breaks her ankle. It celebrates the perseverance and passion of Broadway performers in a dazzling tap spectacle. 42nd Street was the winner of the 1980 Tony Award for “Best Musical” and it won again in 2001 for the “Best Revival Musical.” “It is very timeless because it’s about an underdog. It’s a story about hard work and determination really paying off in the end. It’s an empowering story,” says Aimee Turner, the co-founder of OSTC. She is also director and choreographer of the show. Aimee is very excited about putting on this uplifting musical after running The Diary of Anne Frank. Although she is proud of the production, which received waves of positive feedback for the powerful emotions that the cast invoked, it is time to lighten up the stage. This is an example of the “90-degree angle turns” that Aimee strives to make in her show selections. But 42nd Street holds a particularly special place in Aimee’s heart. Theatre had always been a substantial part of her life; she dreamt of dancing on

Broadway’s stage when she was only 13. Aimee has been a professional actor since high school and her dream of making it to Broadway became a reality by her early 20s, when she made her debut as a cast member for none other than 42nd Street. She performed the musical in the U.S. and she toured in Europe for nine months. This

was the first of six Broadway productions that Aimee performed in before she took up directing, producing and choreography. “This is where my heart started. I love musicals and I think there is a big audience for it,” she says. OSTC is known for putting on largescale musicals year-round. They have announced two more for this summer, Guys & Dolls and Always…Patsy Cline. Aimee explains that aside from her personal relationship with the show, she believes that 42nd Street will strike a chord with nearly everyone. She expects the whole audience to be rooting for little Peggy Sawyer by the end of Act II. The musical does not touch upon controversial themes or use foul language, making it appropriate for families, and the uplifting theme of triumph makes this a great nightcap to a night out. It is also hard for anyone to leave without a smile after watching the exhilarating dance ensembles performed by 23 professional dancers, singers and actors. “There is something electric about watching a lot of people tap dancing at once, it is so unique,” she says. “There is nothing that compares to that excitement.”

The thrill of live performance that Aimee describes is becoming a novelty in our technology-engrossed lives where we can stream a video on several different devices within our home and we are constantly listening for that shrill tone to notify us of a new post, tweet or “Like.” “I think that live theatre is more important than ever because our life has turned into text messaging and emailing,” she says. “We communicate through words so much that I think listening is more important than ever, and you must listen in the theatre.” Another unique aspect of the OSTC cast that sets them apart from other professional theatre organizations in the state is the medley of backgrounds that come to the stage. There is no set guild or company. Open auditions are held every year where anyone can come regardless of their experience. “That’s the fun part about having a [professional] theatre in your backyard, you never know who you are going to meet for the first time,” Aimee says. OSTC deliberately tries to integrate a diverse group of performers, casting each show to its best benefit, “regardless of where those folks come from.” This past year, three of their regular performers joined the union
and moved to New York City, OSTC also hired several Rhode Island natives from the Big Apple. This is a common tradeoff seen at the OSTC. “It’s great that we can help people moving up the ladder, providing a place to become better,” Aimee says, “And also [for] people who are already successful, a place where they can ‘come home’ and still work professionally.” This month, enjoy the theatrical prowess of well-seasoned drama veterans or witness young actors making their big break in the smallest state. The inspiring story of 42nd Street is sure to leave the whole family smiling and the transfixing dance numbers may even rouse some to take up tap lessons.

have a way of inspiring creativity, and if there’s a surge of new artists emerging from Block Island in the next few years, it’s safe to assume that Felicia Grace Cinquegrana will have played a hand in it. A 17-year island resident, Felicia sees her home as the “last bit of the American Dream” – where artists can work in blissful solitude all winter and then reveal their work to the world when the summer crowds storm the shores. Felicia was born in Hawaii and raised in a hippie commune, a background that informs her sense of fashion more than her work, but also equips her with the carefree ability to spend her summers living on a small boat with her boyfriend, John, and her dog, Mira (during the winter, they rent a house, taking advantage of the offseason rates). A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focused on sculpture, and with a masters in art education from the Rhode Island School of Design, Felicia spent many years teaching and advocating for the arts rather than pursuing her own artistic muse. She worked at a nonprofit in Baltimore fighting to preserve art education funding, taught art to inner-city kids in
Richmond, CA, and served as the educational director of CityArts, which offers free, professional art-based education and training to Providence youth. The death of her father prompted Felicia to reset her life on Block Island, transforming an interest in metalworking and ceramics into a jewelry-design business utilizing raw, uncut gems and locally sourced sea glass. The natural beauty of this “last great place” provides constant inspiration for her collection of bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings. “I wanted to do something nobody else was doing, using natural materials all found on Block Island,” she explains. She gathers the sea glass from several secret locations on the island; the glass from bottles discarded by past generations of boaters and beachgoers is slowly milled by the waves and sand, making it a small memento of the island’s history. Her commissioned work sometimes includes sea glass brought to her by customers themselves. Even the silver she works with incorporates native elements: the molten metal is poured over Block Island beach sand to create a uniquely granual look. The one aspect of her work that stands apart is her use of tree imagery: that’s a bit of an anomaly on famously denuded Block Island,
although she does use a nautical carving technique similar to scrimshaw to create her arboreal designs. Felicia sells her work at the island’s weekly farmer’s markets, where the challenge hasn’t been finding buyers but rather producing enough pieces to meet demand. At the same time, she is keeping her hand in education by developing an overnight camp for Block Island kids that will include immersive instruction in everything from art to organic farming. She’s also a part-time program director at the Block Island Conservancy and teaches classes at the local community arts center. An organic and intuitive artist, Felicia laughingly admits that she sometimes gets bored when she has to duplicate a second earring for a set. “I think of my work as little sculptures,” she says, hearkening back to her earliest artistic training. “Every piece is completely original, and each involves some basic engineering and ergonomics, so it is sculptural in that sense.”
