Help the Westerly Armory Transform Into a Museum and More Originally built in 1901, the Westerly Armory itself is an evolving piece of Rhode Island’s history. Previously it housed the Westerly Rifles, the 243rd Coast Artillery, the 705th Anti-Aircraft Artillery and the 169th Military Police Company of the Rhode Island Army National Guard – but now, turning from being a part of history to preserving it, the Armory houses both community and local military memorabilia. And it needs your help to do it. On March 28, the Armory welcomes guests to Rhody Night, a fundraiser so steeped in Rhode Island culture that it begs to be experienced. Hosted by the infamous Cardi brothers (Ni-Ro-Pe), the event features a “pure Rhode Island” meal of clam chowder, grinders, cabinets, Del’s Lemonade and more. After the Ocean State foodstuffs, the event turns its attention to Rhode Island-based trivia and raffles. URI Hosts a Symposium on Comedy as Social Commentary Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a Penn State professor, a famous standup comedian and a bunch of URI students walk into Swan Hall… On Saturday, March 22, URI’s Harrington School of Communication and Media hosts Open Mic, Open Minds: An Exploration of Social Issues Through Standup. This full-day humor symposium will not only celebrate comedy, but also critique and study it, exploring it as a mechanism for addressing social issues. Participants will attend workshops hosted by performers and communications professionals, explore the history of standup with keynote speaker Dr. Jerry Zolten from Penn State Altoona, work in groups to put together a comedy piece around a social issue of their choice and, as the grand finale, be treated to a closing set from comedian Patton Oswalt, a true master of comedy-as-social-critique. $20 for students, $30 for non-students. 60 Upper College Road, Kingston. Welcome a new contender to Rhode Island’s fermented, hoppy arena of beer: Proclamation Ale. And as the name suggests, this brewery seeks to make an uproarious first splash. “It’s sort of the cliché story,” says Dave Witham, president and brewmaster, commenting on the company’s creation. “I got a homebrew kit for my wedding about five and a half years ago, and whenever I get into anything, I go completely bonkers – I don’t dabble. I got obsessed, I guess.” From that obsession came Witham’s first beer, the Tendril. Described as a “one and a half times IPA,” it features the hailed “C” hops of the craft beer world, along with some lesser known, “bastard-stepchildren” hops, and weighs in at 7.8% ABV. Witham hopes to soon launch a second brew, the Zzzlumber, a Dutch imperial stout. “I had wanted to release the second right away, but there’s a long legal process for anything you do that’s barrel-aged. You need the formula approved by the government.” Unfortunately, says Witham, the recent government shutdown created a backup for this approval process. So thanks, Congress, now I have to settle for doublefisting the same Proclamation Ale brew. Mindfulness in Simple English South County, have you ever thought about your self? And not in the I-need-avacation way, or the I-should-buy-a-boat way. No, have you ever contemplated your physical and mental existence, while also remaining mindful of the way in which you love and understand your self? It’s a heavy question, for sure, but it’s one that the Rhode Island Community of Mindfulness seeks to nurture and support. Here, within this community of six meditation groups, or sanghas, scattered around the state, three of which call South County home, individuals attempt to “deepen [their] understanding of mindfulness” and engage in “Buddhist practices.” All meditation meetings are open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to participate. In East Greenwich, there’s Clear Path Sangha, which meets from 6-8pm every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, and Generations Sangha, which meets from 10am-12pm on the second Saturday of every month. Both are located at the Westminster Unitarian Church, 119 Kenyon Avenue, East Greenwich. Elsewhere, there’s Clear Heart Sangha, a group that meets from 6-8pm on the first four Sundays of every month. Finding your dream home
can be a lot like true romance, theorizes Ann McCrory. “I know that feeling… when people fall in love with another person, it’s like, ‘this is it.’” She likened the feeling to the first time she and her husband Glenn steered down the wooded driveway off Vineyard Road in scenic Saunderstown in 1993. Though the English country manorstyle house evoked Old World charm and remarkable architectural detail, it lacked the amenities and appeal best suited for a young family. The awkward layout and other surface issues, the couple says, is what likely scared off other potential buyers. “When it was on the market, it just had all those obstacles they couldn’t see though,” says Glenn. The McCrorys, however, saw a diamond in the rough.
“We waited a little bit to move in – it was pretty incomplete,” explains Glenn. “The guy we bought it from at the time was a single guy and had started the building project.” But the ambitious bachelor met a girl, fell in love and the two decided to start their life together in a more urban setting. “[The house] was a little too far in the woods for her,” laughs Glenn. Though unfinished, the previous owner had brought back numerous century-old pieces from his many trips to England and incorporated each throughout the house. Glenn complemented the European aesthetic with an all-stone exterior from native stone harvested on the property so that the home looked as if it had been nestled in the woods there for centuries. “You would swear it was 300-years-old,” says Glenn. Though they appreciated what the
previous homeowner had started, Glenn and Ann had their work cut out for them – in many cases, quite literally. “The challenge was to find stuff here to complement it,” says Glenn. “What he had started, we continued, making it our own… We had a lot of stuff made and the end result was a very European cottage-style home.” Glenn, a South County native and experienced contractor, was hardly intimidated by an extensive renovation project. Nor was he in a rush. He and Ann wanted to do things right. “We worked on it for probably 12 years. The kids were young then; our son was 11 and our daughter was eight. They lived through the whole thing with us.” In order to build an addition in the same fashion as the heart of the home, Glenn mined more stone with the help of
dynamite and his neighbor. “The original owner had hired a friend of his, a stone mason from Nova Scotia, and he built things like they did 100 years ago,” explains Glenn. “The walls were literally 22” thick. It was a challenge, a big undertaking if you wanted to move something. We joke that this is the best hurricane or bomb shelter in Rhode Island!” About eight years ago, the couple re-examined the layout and flow of the home and decided to better merge the spaces for a more modern and traffic-friendly floor plan. “We now have a big kitchen, dining and living room all open to each other,” describes Glenn. “It was one of the things the house really needed.” Both Ann and Glenn agree that one of the spaces they enjoy the most isn’t in the house at all – it’s the outdoor March 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

patio where they grill and entertain their family, which includes their children and grandchildren. Set a mile back from the road, privacy is ever-present and the rustic surroundings allow for an inspired backdrop. Inside, ample windows afford the same bucolic views and seven impressive fireplaces create a warm atmosphere. Choosing wall colors, repurposing antiques and finding furnishings indulged Ann’s passion for design. “I like to fix things and make things look better,” she says simply, albeit an understatement. Today, the house is a testament of

Glenn’s love for building and design, and Ann’s appetite for making a property realize its full potential. “It’s my livelihood and my passion,” Glenn says. “It’s been a love affair building the house, and a chore keeping it up.” But it’s been a labor of love. Neither Ann nor Glenn can pinpoint one particular space in the home that is their favorite and it’s easy to see why. Each space has been an emotional and financial investment, which will make it all the more hard when the time comes to downsize. “We are at the point now where it is way too big
for the two of us,” says Ann of their beloved empty nest. “I still love the house, it just doesn’t make sense.” As a real estate agent, Ann knows there are some equally amazing smaller properties out there, and she hopes they will find another stone house or something unique. “I like things that don’t look like the everyday house,” she explains. What the couple can say for certain is that they have no plans to leave the community they have called home for most of their lives. “I sell houses to people from all over and what’s
attractive about North Kingstown is that it’s a bedroom community and it is a real community,” she says, citing the strong school system, sports teams for kids and adults, farmers’ markets and more. “We have open space, lots of water, just so many pretty features. It’s relaxing… I love South County; there’s a great quality of life here.”

After being cooped up
for far too many gray and frosty weeks this winter, I was delighted to take advantage of one of our recent mini thaws and head to the beach. Okay, so I might have been just a little too optimistic thinking “fun in the sun” so I hit the town, downtown that is, in picturesque Westerly and strolled the beautiful sidewalks on Broad Street where I had the pleasure of visiting TLC Boutique – home of an eclectic women’s clothing and accessories shop. The store’s inviting window display of stunning party dresses adorned with fun and funky baubles immediately caught my attention and pleaded with me to c’mon in and discover what other stylish pieces and gems were tucked away. Owners Tina Pagliusi and Lorie Olsen have been in business together since 2007 when they opened their first boutique, In Due Time, which catered to pregnant clientele. Several years later, they decided to expand their horizons and fashion apparel lines so that they could offer trendy, fresh styles and accessories to fit all women’s needs, not just expecting moms. So, TLC Boutique was born and opened in their same store location on Broad Street. The shops name was a creative
combination of their own names, T for Tina, L for Lorie and C for Clothing. “Our motto is ‘Every Gal Needs a Little TLC’ and we can definitely offer tasteful, affordable ways for women to spice up their wardrobes for little money and effort,” share the two with passion. TLC offers a striking array of pieces that can easily complement an existing wardrobe. Extraordinary scarves of all hues and patterns are nestled throughout the cozy displays of sweaters, casual and special occasion dresses and gowns, timeless denim and leather jackets, leggings, career and comfy cotton blouses and trendy tees and jeans. I loved the hip yet ageless vibe that I felt while browsing the streamlined arrangement of merchandise. This is definitely a place I can shop alongside my teenage daughters as well as my 70-year-old mother. Another wow factor in this comfy and chic boutique is their pleasing assortment of accessories. Sunlight streamed through the front window casting just the right shimmer on the many displays of Red Water Design, a popular line of affordable, quality fashion jewelry created by a local designer in East Greenwich. All earrings for sale at TLC are $9.99, and they are known for their buy two pairs, get one pair free offer, which runs all year round.
In addition there are beads, bracelets and bangles, necklaces ranging from simple and delicate to bold and chunky statement pieces laden with playful charms, cool sunglasses and wallets that are all extremely affordable. Both Tina and Lorie invite women to shop for basics such as camis and yoga pants. “We offer basic pieces that are high-quality at a great value so you don’t have to run to big department stores.” It was also fun to see men shopping for the special ladies in their lives. They find the downtown location convenient and appreciate the fashion advice they receive from the staff at TLC in addition to free gift-wrapping for any item in the store. The Art of Creating Themes Jessica Billings creates gorgeous tablescapes for parties
Could you tell me about this birthday party you have created? This is a cotton candy-themed birthday party for a little girl. Cotton candy is my favorite treat to use on a dessert table, so I’ve always wanted to create a theme that is totally based on cotton candy. The color palette is all pastels, pale pink being the primary color with aqua and blue accents. When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in event styling? I’ve always had the creative gene but I’ve never really known how to use it. I’m not an artist in any sense of the word and stick figures are as far as I can draw, but I’ve always been good with colors and aesthetics. It took me a long time to find the perfect creative outlet that combined all of my talents. My daughter’s first birthday party was when I realized this was something I could take to the next level. I chose a theme and a color scheme and I just ran with it. I made the dessert table the centerpiece of a party and I got an overwhelming response from friends and family. People started asking me to create tablescapes for their events, so I did a few for friends and family until I really perfected my craft. Do you often team up with other artists or local businesses when styling an event? My focus is mostly on the handmade details of the table, but none of it would be possible without the desserts themselves. I have a list of preferred vendors that I work exclusively with for photo shoots and client parties. It’s so important to make and maintain loyal

relationships in this business. I often get asked for bakery references and it’s important that I refer people to someone I trust, so I promote my vendors every chance I get because they make my business possible. I also shop local every chance I get. Where do you get your inspiration for the various types of events you style? I get so much of my inspiration from sweet treats and pretty candy. Like my cotton candy party, I often find one simple element that can give me a wealth of inspiration and fun ideas. I’ve tossed around the idea of opening a candy shop at some point because there is nothing more beautiful than a wall of glass jars filled with colorful candy. What advice would you give someone when creating a tablescape? The best advice I can give someone creating a tablescape is to make sure there is height on the table. There is nothing more boring than a table full of items all the same height. To avoid your table looking boring, you need to add dimension and depth. The easiest way to add some height is to wrap a basic box in beautiful wrapping paper and use it as a pedestal for cakes and cookies. What are some inexpensive ways someone can create a tablescape? Although I love a beautifully a detailed fondant cake, I’ve created some gorgeous tablescapes using nothing but grocery store treats. Brownies, Rice Krispies Treats, basic cookies and cupcakes are inexpensive items that can be found at any store and can look beautiful with the right details. You can add your own details by buying a few sheets of craft paper from the craft store, cutting flags and handmade tags from them and adding them to a toothpick or paper straw. I also love wrapping individual brownies or cookies in pretty ribbon. Those inexpensive details add great charm to every party. What was the most interesting event you have done? It’s always interesting to style a gender-neutral event, like a baby shower or a combined birthday party. Some-

times it’s challenging to come up with a theme and color scheme that reveals nothing. I recently created a Gender Reveal Party for The Rhode Show themed “What Will It BEE?” The color palette was pale yellow, brown and cream and everything had bumblebee details. I used giant balloons filled with pink confetti that we popped at the end of the segment to reveal the gender.

But every now and then I will get a client who doesn’t have a specific theme in mind and will give me complete creative control to pick the theme and color scheme. I have so many unique ideas in mind and it’s always a thrill to be given the opportunity to bring them to life.

Cozy and Delicious A Westerly tavern worth a second bite

one more thing, after a server has been back and forth to your table multiple times, like a child does. 84 Tavern is in a big, welcoming space. The bar takes up most of the first room. It almost has to, with over 20 beers on tap. It’s a great bar with a ton of room to hang out – if I worked in the area that would be a perfect after work bar. The dining room is twice the size of the bar area and it’s very smartly laid out with partition walls to add privacy to certain areas, allowing for a good mix of small tables and larger ones, like the great round table our group sat at. I enjoy round tables for conversation; with the low wall nearby, it was almost like we were in our own private dining area. I mentioned over 20 beers on tap – many of them local brews like Grey Sail, Revival and Cottrell. Well, there are at least another 20 bottled beers on the list at 84 Tavern, plus an extensive list of cocktail options and wine as well. The cocktail menu includes classics like a French 75 and a Pimm’s Cup along with a dozen modern creations too. The wine list isn’t as long as the beer and cocktails, but it’s got some good offerings. Bottom line is, this is a well-stocked tavern for drinks. It’s also a great place for very well executed tavern food. We kicked off dinner with Poutine ($7), because who can resist French fries loaded with cheese

and gravy? We ordered the mozzarella version, which isn’t exactly traditional, but no one at our table was going to quibble. Along with the Poutine, which was pretty quickly devoured, we order the Crispy Confit Chicken Wings ($8.99) which come either Buffalo (of course) or with a Sriracha Sweet Thai Chili Glaze. We went Thai and they were delicious with just a little kick of heat at the end of a sweet bite.
To round out the appetizers we tried a cup of the Loaded Texas Chili ($3.99), which was just as the menu said, loaded with beef, beans, onions and cheese. It was nice and thick and almost a meal in itself. I also ordered the Fried Oysters ($10.99), which were spot-on perfect. Fried oysters are supposed to retain that juicy brine inside the crisp shell and these were exactly that: a tasty crunch and then the explosion of delicious oyster inside. Dinner brought four great dishes: Maple Mustard Glazed Pork Chops, Baked Stuffed Shrimp, an 84 Burger and also a Tavern Turkey Burger. We passed things around and everyone was very happy with each dish. My favorite may have been the Baked Stuffed Shrimp ($21.99), though I’d really be hard pressed to pick one favorite. The shrimp stood out in what was an excellent dish that could be considered a restaurant cliché. But at 84 Tavern that old classic was almost brand new. The shrimp were not only fresh, but also toothsome, and they were perfectly cooked and stuffed. It was like rediscovering and old friend that you thought you’d never see again. The Maple Mustard Glazed Pork Chops ($18.99) were also nicely

Westerly needs a little more love. I know plenty of people from the Westerly area who wouldn’t bat an eye at driving “all the way” to Providence to dine out, but know very few Providence people who would make the trek south (even if they packed a lunch). Granted, there is a wide selection of excellent food around our capital city, but part of the beauty of Rhode Island is that we can experience a whole different landscape and atmosphere by taking just a 30-minute drive, and if there happens to be an excellent restaurant at the end of that drive, that’s important, because who packs a lunch anymore? All of that is a roundabout way of saying you should be going to 84 Tavern on Canal. I had been a couple of times in the past when it was called 84 High Street and always enjoyed it, but hadn’t had the chance to visit its new location around the corner from High Street on Canal Street, hence the new name. I have had the chance to enjoy chef and owner Christopher Champagne’s cooking at several events over the last year, including at my own Eat Drink RI Festival, and really wanted to put the one-year-old 84 Tavern on Canal through its paces. So we went to Westerly with a group, including my two children, which always ups the ante on how staff handles service. No one excels at asking for just

prepared with a good sear on them for lots of flavor. One of the standouts on the plate was the Sweet PotatoApple-Bacon Hash. All of us at the table couldn’t get enough of it. It was another example of great balance between sweet, salty and smoky ingredients. The two burgers couldn’t have been more different and yet both were very satisfying. The 84 Burger ($11.99) was a good size, but not one of those burgers was bigger than your head. The best comment at the table about the Tavern Turkey Burger ($11.99) was that if you weren’t told it was ground turkey you might not have realized it right away. Both burgers were excellent and well recommended. We wrapped up dinner with some Peanut Butter Pie ($7) and the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich ($7). The pie was very good, but the Ice Cream
Cookie Sandwich is still being talked about three weeks later – and not only by the two children at the table. That was a darn good dessert. Westerly has seen some dining growth over the last few years and 84 Tavern on Canal is one of the reasons why. The restaurant has a great selection for everyone, and if you want to see even more, they post specials daily on their Facebook page. Bottom line is, you should check out 84 Tavern on Canal, and not just if you live in southern Rhode Island.

DiMare Seafood in East Greenwich is a family operated bistro/marketplace featuring fresh, local items with an Italian influence. Co-owners Katie and Treven Leonard’s passion for providing uncomplicated, clean and comforting food is obvious in a menu that is sure to impress even the most discerning of seafood lovers.

What inspired DiMare? Katie: DiMare was merely a thought between my older brother and me back in 1995. I was 16 and Danny had just opened the original Seafood Marketplace in the Benny’s Plaza on Rt. 1 at only 24. We two Navy brats spent a lot of time outdoors together fishing, stringing bait, swimming, boogie boarding, and most of all, talking about Rhode Island and its local fishing economy. While I moved on with my other career through my 20s, Danny passed in a tragic accident and the “Frutti Di Mare” marketplace-restaurant-combo dream became that much closer to my heart. I set a goal and at 30 after moving back home from the metro DC area, I opened DiMare. I based the concept, the look, the feel, the product, the ingredients and even the glassware completely around simplicity and common desire. How did you and your husband meet? Treven and I met one afternoon as he ordered our Mussels & Chourico and homemade sangria. After five years of dating and becoming the best of friends, we have found ourselves newlyweds as well as business partners who truly believe in the same vision. It is our way of life now and we are determined to keep the dream that Danny and I shared alive at DiMare. Where does the Italian influence originate? My family was stationed in Italy for about four years, which is where I was born. I am also half Italian by way of my mother’s side of the family. When I went back to visit my roots in 1995, I found myself drawn to the butcher shops and markets upon cobblestone walkways with the freshest cuts of meat and seafood on display but also

to the family-owned trattorias or B&Bs. That was when my dream to own one truly became a mission: simple, fresh cooking with a lot of love and care so that you can taste the food instead of covering it up with unhealthy ingredients. That was how my Gram cooked. That is how we cook. And around that iconic Italian kitchen table is where “life” happens. Does harsh winter weather affect the amount/types of seafood you serve? All weather conditions affect the types of seafood and product in general that we serve from cold to hot, rain to wind. So does the economy, such as fuel prices. Treven and I make it our focus to stay in tune with all of these variables in order to never compromise the standards of our product line. It is our responsibility in this profession to buy seafood that reinforces the local industry/economy, sustains the health of our oceans, and continually informing the customers about various products while minding everyone’s wallet. We all have a responsibility to buy local and sustain our economy but also to sustain the healthiness of our local landscape. What menu item would you suggest for those who may be a little hesitant about trying seafood? Certainly a mild, white flaky fish such
as haddock, cod, pollock, local flounder or halibut. Also, most non-seafood eaters will always enjoy a nice and tender fried calamari. Unfortunately, seafood has turned off many people by having it somewhere that didn’t care for it responsibly. Really fresh seafood shouldn’t smell fishy. It should give off about the same amount of odor as a perfectly ripened fruit or none at all. You will notice inside DiMare that it doesn’t smell like fish – nor should it. Definitely another safe venture would be Fish Tacos. We roast ours instead of frying, as it just isn’t necessary. It’s all about perspective and freshness. We started introducing Treven’s seven-year-old son, Tony to more and more seafood without pressure after realizing he was becoming biased to chicken nuggets at a very young age. Now his favorite food is lobster and raw bar. Smart kid. Maybe he will be shucking at DiMare one day.

Date Night at the Breachway Grill Valentine’s Day may have come and gone, but The Breachway Grill in Charlestown offers a Date Night special on Tuesdays. For $35, you get a bottle of Chardonnay or Merlot, two salads, two entrées and a dessert to share. Recent entrée selections included seared scallops over risotto, Mediterranean salmon, NY strip steak and chicken marsala. Breachway Grill owner Craig Marr says Tuesday Night Date Night “is about being there for our loyal customer.” With prices this good, Marr must really love his customers. The Breachway Grill is open for dinner seven nights a week starting at 5pm and open for lunch on the weekends from 11:30am-4:00pm. The restaurant is known for its grilled fish tacos, Oysters Rockefeller, ½ pound Dunn’s Corner Market burgers and thin New York-style pizzas. They have built up a loyal following and have many regular customers. Marr calls it Charlestown’s version of Cheers and treats everyone like family. On Monday nights, they offer half-priced

have been a part of Henry Gauthier’s life for more than half a century, but it wasn’t until he retired in 2012 that he produced his first piece of artwork – a boat sculpture for his wife, Nancy. Praise from friends and family members helped convince Henry to keep carving… and to carve out a second career for himself as an artist. “I created a sculpture for my wife and said, ‘Gee, this is a lot of fun,’” says Henry. Growing up in Riverside, in Narragansett Terrace on Bullock’s Cove, Henry’s father was a carpenter and recreationally built boats. This influenced him at an early age, and after graduating from URI Henry worked as a boat builder before turning his skills to custom cabinetry, rising over the course of 35 years to become an owner of the architectural woodworking firm Herrick & White Ltd., in Cumberland. Over the years, he also renovated seven homes and restored about an equal number of small boats, finally landing at a commercial building converted to a home in Wickford, once the home of local radio station WKFD, which he completely gutted and rebuilt. In less than two years as a working
artist, Henry has gone from a single sculpture to more than a dozen; joined West Bay Open Studios, the Wickford Art Association, Mystic Art Center, the Newport Art Museum and the South County Art Association; won multiple prizes at various juried art show; and, most recently, opened Studio 460, an artist-owned working studio gallery, in Wickford to exhibit his work and that of about a dozen other local artists. “I’ve been working hard all of my life, but I like to go into the studio,” says Henry. “I’ve always enjoyed creating things at the bench.” Henry’s three-part sculptures (base, boat and sail) are a mix of found objects and delicate carving: sails are typically crafted from precious woods, while ship bodies may be beach stones or items collected during years of antiquing and trolling yard sales. Inspiration is found in a piece of shale that resembles a catboat, for example, or a 19th-century ice skate with a blade in the shape of a Viking ship. One sculpture incorporates a segment of whale vertebrae; another, the petrified tooth of a wooly mammoth. “I’ve always collected odds and ends,” understates Henry. Henry’s works are meant to be held
and touched, and all incorporate movement “to capture the allure and excitement of the sea,” he says. Sails can be turned to the wind or, in the case of a piece called Check Mate, even switched around like pieces on a chess board. “I want them to be interactive,” says Henry. Each unique piece has its own name and story, the latter reflected in the poems that Nancy writes to accompany every sculpture. In his brief career Henry has already started to branch out creatively: his Henry’s initial works were relatively large — some more than three feet tall — but his most recent project is to carve a series of desktop sculptures, and he has also completed his first non-boat piece — a sculpture of a beach flower. “I have a room full of found objects,” says Henry. “All of them want to come to life, and I’m the one who has to do it.”

The Art of Drama A creative collaboration between Trinity Repertory Company and Rocky Hill School Trinity Repertory has proudly provided drama education to many schools within the state for years, instructing over 300 students per week. However, they have never developed a program from the ground up, as they have this year with Rocky Hill School. From March 7-9, students will be performing the famous 1957 Broadway production, West Side Story. This will be the second show since the partnership began this past fall. For their first performance in November, Trinity helped students in grades 6-12 curate a variety show called Growing Up: A Dramatic Experience, a theme chosen by the students. It filled the entire “Cafetorium” and it received waves of positive feedback from parents, staff and students. The enrollment for this upcoming musical doubled from 22 kids to 42 kids after the success of the variety show. “The quality of the performance in both the process and production made it the ‘cool thing’ that everybody wanted to do,” says Meg Myette, chair of the performing arts department at Rocky Hill and initiator of the partnership. Rocky Hill School has a strong music and visual arts program, but Meg felt that their drama program needed revitalization. Two faculty members and three main educators from Trinity rehearse with students three times a week. Other members also occasionally stop in for special instruction, such as when students shadowed the lighting crew. Music lessons are on Mondays so students are prepared to take the stage during their other two rehearsals. After the success of the last performance, the staff of Trinity and Rocky Hill School chose the musical, West Side Story because it would challenge students’ ability to render intensity on the stage while remaining family-friendly. “It’s an iconic show to kick off the partnership and to cement the work that kids are doing,” says Matt Tibbs, Trinity’s school partnerships manager and teaching artist. Both Meg and Matt have witnessed many students blossom both on and off the stage. This is no surprise, because theatre can be both cathartic and eye

opening for students of all ages. Rehearsing for a role isn’t simply pretending to be a character – it’s learning how to temporarily become them. To act the part requires an understanding of a new perspective. Matt explains how this helps students develop empathy and enables them to grow in their own lives. Meg mentioned at least two Upper School students who want to pursue acting in college and perhaps as a career. Trinity has provided professional feedback and experience, which allowed for a deeper exploration of the craft. Many students have also become more receptive to critiques because the advice comes from specialized educators. “The kids are proud of what they’re doing on stage and they’re thirsty for knowledge to make it better,” says Meg. During the variety show, an international student nailed a comedy skit in English, which is her second language. “To see international students doing comedic timing that is not in their own tongue is mind boggling,” says Meg. Another student found solace behind the scenes. Before the program, the student would frequent the nurse’s office as a place of comfort. She would stop in most days during the week, except for one – the tech week of the variety show. “That is one simple illustration of the power that art has. Her excitement about working on a project with her peers bled into her normal school life as well, which we have seen hundreds of times,” says Matt.
Meg could not be more thrilled about the success of the partnership and she is certainly not the only one who wants to see it grow. “We are really lucky here because the administration is very supportive of the arts. We have a really strong art program for all disciplines – music, art, and now thanks to Trinity we have a really fantastic drama program,” says Meg. There will be two more performances this spring. One will be a play performed by Upper School students, which is still in the works. The other will be a junior musical, performed by the Lower School. The Lower School performance will be Once on this Island, a “Caribbean Romeo and Juliet” according to Meg. There is also discussion about how to expand the curriculum further. Both Trinity and Rocky Hill School want this to be a lasting relationship. “The quality on stage has elevated so much,” says Meg, “There is a perfect balance of a good sense of humor and driving work ethic.”
