OFF THE CUFF Jamestown jewelry maker commemorates 2019 in sterling silver New Year’s Eve can mean many things, from a symbolic fresh start (cue those resolutions!) to an excuse to party the night away. But as the countdown to midnight starts, champagne glasses poised and breath bated, there’s always a moment when you find yourself looking back on the last 365 days – and perhaps wishing to hold onto them for a little longer. This is the concept behind Jamestown jewelry maker Didi Suydam’s MAXIMA Cuff. The design is simple: a

sterling silver cuff with a satin finish, the year 2019 written in Roman numerals MMXIX. The idea originated as graduation gifts for Didi’s daughters; she made each by hand, soldering the numerals onto the bars to form a cuff. Then, Didi thought, “Why couldn’t this be a way to commemorate any important year in someone’s life?” Find the MAXIMA Cuff ($295) at Didi Suydam Contemporary at Shop. DidiSuydam.com. -Megan Schmit

Education Programs For 15 years, College Visions has provided low-income and underserved students with assistance to apply to and stay in college. Services include resume and essay editing, financial aid advising, paying for campus visits, and even giving students access to computers and other technologies. How You Can Help: Participate in events like interview prep day, care package assembly, financial aid projects, and application day parties. Providence, CollegeVisions.org. Domestic & Sexual Abuse Prevention and Education The Sojourner House has an overarching mission: to ensure that one day, we live in a world without domestic or sexual abuse. The program seeks to help victims of sexual and domestic abuse with educational programs, HIV/AIDS prevention and testing, youth advocacy, a drop-in center, an abuse hotline, support groups, and more. How You Can Help: The nonprofit accepts both donations and volunteers. Providence, SojournerRI.org.

The Season of Giving 6 nonprofits to support during the holidays – and all year Around the holidays we can get consumed by, well, consumerism. And how can we not? Black Friday, doorbuster deals, the Cyber Monday click-and-save bonanzas – but the holiday season is also a time for doing good, reaching out, and pitching in to help those in need. Whether it’s volunteering for your neighborhood soup kitchen or donating to your favorite local charity, it’s always a good idea to pay it forward. Here are six examples of Rhode Island-based nonprofits you can show some love to on #GivingTuesday (Dec 3) and the coming months.

Animal Shelters & Sanctuaries Let’s not forget our furry and feathered friends. West Place Animal Sanctuary in Tiverton is a safe haven for injured wild animals of many kinds. Founder Wendy Taylor takes in fowl (ducks, turkeys, and geese, oh my!), alpacas, horses, pigs, goats, lost dogs, and others for shelter and rehabilitation. How You Can Help: Volunteer at the farm by walking dogs, feeding the animals, and pruning the gardens, or donate on their website. Tiverton, WestPlace.org. Military Family & Veteran Support Services The holidays can be especially hard for military and law enforcement families whose members are overseas or were

lost in service. What’s more, some of these families struggle to pay their living expenses and cannot afford presents for their children. That’s why the James D. Reilly Foundation made it its mission to bring a magical holiday experience to those in need. Donations to the organization will help fund a myriad of things, from toys for kids’ “wish lists” to a mortgage or accessible vehicle. How You Can Help: Donate online, request a visit from Santa, or volunteer. Bristol, JDRFoundation.org. Homeless Shelters & Services Eighteen thousand meals served in its soup kitchen annually, 225 unique individuals housed in a year, and 80 children and adults helped daily. These are the impressive differences the Welcome House of South County has made in its community. Located in Peace Dale, the emergency shelter program seeks to equip its guests with the financial knowledge and skills to live an independent, comfortable life. The Welcome House also has a oneyear transitional housing onsite for a select number of individuals. How You Can Help: Volunteer in their soup kitchen or shelter, donate food, or give money to help this holiday season. Peace Dale, WelcomeHouseOfSouthCounty.org. Food Banks No one should have to choose between paying the rent and eating. Project Hand Up/Be The Change is a volunteer and food donations-based group where people can take home groceries for the week in exchange for a small monetary donation. The organization also collects school supplies for students in need at the beginning of the academic year, and hosts a “Stuff the Bus With Food” event for families and the elderly trying to make ends meet. How You Can Help: Donate food and supplies or make a monetary donation online. West Warwick, BTCSundayMeal.com. -Lauren Vella

Out of the Woodwork A master furniture maker in Peace Dale keeps the handicraft alive apprentice to John C. Northup, an old Swamp Yankee from North Kingstown. Together they restored and reproduced pre-1850 period pieces. After four years he enrolled in a new graduate course in artisanry at Boston College, studying the history and design of furniture. In 1978 he graduated with a Certificate in Mastery of Wood Furniture Design. He invested in some early 1900s machinery from a retiring cabinet maker, had his first show at RISD, and never looked back. Gentle curves are the current that runs through Timothy’s work. His designs have appeared in multiple books and magazines, and some pieces are in museum collections, including RISD Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Smithsonian. He was

commissioned by piano maker Steinway & Sons to build two art case pianos, each measuring almost 12 feet long, boasting East Indian rosewood, rare Cuban mahogany, and satinwood interiors. From sideboards to seating, Timothy’s creations are meant to be both used and admired, and are the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking work. Today, in Timothy’s Peace Dale studio, the early machinery is still in use alongside chisels and other tools handed down from his great grandfather. “No computers or fancy electronics, basically an on/off switch,” Timothy jokes. He maintains and repairs the machines himself, continuing to create unique furniture using the old things he loves. TimothyPhilbrick.com -Marylou Butler

Timothy Philbrick did not aspire to be a furniture maker when he was young. Though he had helped his father build a kayak and had a love for old things (frequently haunting the shops along Route 44 in Seekonk), it wasn’t until he moved to San Francisco when he was 18 that he had an epiphany. “I realized that the items in antique stores there was the same stuff I would see in the junk stores here,” he remembers. So, he and some friends filled a truck with local Rhode Island treasures, drove back to California, and opened an antique store. However, some of the furniture needed repair, and the job fell to Timothy. “I quickly realized that I enjoyed working on the furniture much more than running a store.” Back in Rhode Island, Timothy became an

The Warm and Fuzzy Effect A pajama fundraiser has been a Wickford tradition for 23 years Twenty-three years ago, Lori Lyons wanted to do something special beyond just an open house for her gift shop, Beauty and the Bath. She was inspired by holiday clothing drives, but thought beyond piles of coats and hats: “We take for granted that everyone has pajamas and a comforting bedtime ritual, but it’s not always the case for families struggling to put food on the table. Pajamas are a luxury they might not be able to afford,” Lori explains. “A comforting bedtime routine helps all children thrive. Good nights make good days!” So, she asked customers to bring new, unwrapped pajama sets for boys and girls, aged newborn to 17, that Lori would donate to kids in need through the North Kingstown Giv-

ing Program, which lets parents come and “shop” for their family during the holidays. Today, the event is a town tradition. Since the first Pajama Party, thousands of PJ sets have been collected and delivered. While Lori used to orchestrate most of the event on her own, including making all the food and her famous “grown-up” hot chocolate, merchants and restaurants within Wickford Village and beyond have gotten involved, donating raffle prizes (kayak excursions, yoga classes, designer handbags, a private horse-drawn carriage ride), appetizers, and swag-bags. But, Lori’s favorite part? “Seeing my loyal, awesome customers show up with armfuls of adorable pajamas saying, ‘it was just too hard to pick out one!’”

Lori hopes to keep the momentum going and make more folks aware of their work, which she believes is to give all children a loving night, regardless of family circumstances – something she has dubbed “The Warm and Fuzzy Effect”. “People tell me shopping for kids’ PJs and coming to [the party] has become part of their holiday tradition,” Lori shares. “It just feels so good to see the mound of pajamas at the end of the night and know that, together, we all did this.” The PJ Party will take place December 4 from 5-9pm at Beauty and the Bath, including 20 percent off store merchandise, refreshments, store demos, goody bags, and raffle. The Fine Art of Gift Giving Across the state, holiday craft shows give locals the chance to collect handmade gifts

Foundry Artists Holiday Show

Yes, it’s convenient to use an Amazon Wish List. Scroll, scroll, click, click – a half-hour later, all your holiday shopping is done. But there’s nothing exciting about it. Online shopping feels like a chore, like paying your electric bill. Loved ones open their pre-wrapped bags and boxes, and you wonder what you even ordered for them. The opposite? Browsing the displays of a holiday art market, where local artists and crafters show their wares. Instead of algorithms, you’ll find ceramics, paintings, kitchen implements, and tableware that you have never seen before – because it was physically created by the person in front of you. Art markets gather creatives from across the region, some of whom may even be your neighbors.

Holy Mackerel The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a hallowed Italian tradition – and you can celebrate at local restaurants

Photography by Stacey Doyle

If you love seafood, La Vigilia is the best possible holiday: a feast, showcasing the bounty of the sea, followed immediately by Christmas. Purists could go on and on about the symbolism of the event – the biblical number, the Catholic abstention from “meat” before a holiday – but in the end, the Feast of the Seven Fishes is a delicious maritime meal shared with family during the most sentimental season of the year. The Italian tradition is well-known in Rhode Island, whether your family hails from Naples or not. And because we’re the Ocean State, many Rhodies are all too willing to celebrate Christmas Eve with lemongarlic shrimp, mussels with tomato, and fillets of salted cod. Cooking so many dishes may sound daunting, which is one reason several local restaurants host their own versions of the feast. This is by no means an exhaustive list of restaurants serving La Vigilia meals, and some Seven Fishes mainstays, like Roma and Spirito’s, hadn’t finalized their schedules at press time. But if you’re looking for a venue to celebrate outside your home – or you want to try the seasonal cuisine for the first time – these are some primo places to start.

Dash through December with our guide to all things holiday

by Elyse Major & Megan Schmit Photography by Mackenzie Bremges

T

here’s something extraordinary about December in South County. The coastline takes on a different personality and you’re more likely to see birders over ‘boarders – although with wet suits, that’s still a thing. It’s time to bundle up and enjoy wandering through shops festooned and stocked with holiday offerings. Restaurants serve up spiced and savory treats, and hot cocoa is back on the menu. There are tree and menorah lightings, classic performances, art markets and craft shows. And while Main Streets in East Greenwich, Wakefield, Westerly, Wickford Village, and more offer a special charm all year round, they become especially twinkly in anticipation of the holidays. Whether you describe yourself as Buddy the Elf, the Grinch, or the Mensch on the Bench, we’ve assembled a stocking-full of ways for you to eat, drink, and get your merry on all month long.

Nauti or Nice?

Show your state love with distinctly Rhody ornaments Pulling out bins and boxes of ornaments each year is a treat similar to rifling through a box of photos, each connecting to a special memory, person, place. Around the state, makers and sellers are stocking their shelves with ornaments so fun and quirky they’re just as much a souvenir as a Christmas decoration. Consider adding any of these to your collection or gifting to someone who adores the state as much as you do!

A Wakefield mixed media artist is living life on her own terms

“How I came to live here is an interesting story, at least to me,” begins Linda Willis of the townhouse that she’s called home for two years. “I believe I manifested this place. I knew where I wanted to live and was not willing to settle for anything less.” Linda recounts how she spotted the condo, located in the Sweet Allen Farm neighborhood, her very first time on Craigslist. “I had never been on that website for anything!” she says, but spotted the property and was compelled to respond instantly. She called a real estate agent for a “look-see,” and then “hounded the owners” until they rented it to her. “A testament to the power of the mind,” says Linda.

In Linda Willis’ home studio, a neutral backdrop allows colorful supplies and notions to take center stage. Fabric assemblages make fanciful window treatments.

A mixed media artist and quilter, Linda likes to work with scraps of fabrics, stitching over assemblages using a technique she refers to as freestyle patchwork, a term that easily applies to her home decor as well. Her townhouse is both home and studio, and is filled with an

I don’t need to take anyone else’s taste into consideration. I don’t have any set rules I follow.” A self-described Army Brat, Linda has lived in many places around the United States and in Japan

and France, and cites everything from her travels to found objects, even sights, sounds, and colors, as influences and inspiration. “I have collections of shells, beach rocks, and driftwood around the house. I also use them in my mixed media pieces.” “I couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to live,” says Linda, who says it’s all about location, location, location. “We have a bucolic college/country town, a beach community. We have students and tourists. We have theater and arts. We’re a hop, skip, and a jump from Boston and New York. I love living in Rhode Island in general and South County in particular. I am a happily retired woman who is fortunate enough to be able to make art and be creative on a daily basis in my own space.”

Singer & Musician

I love a good quality jean in black or dark blue and a white V-neck and a blazer. The sockless shoe look during summer is always fun, too. I love a good designer belt to pop off the solid colors. Currently, a black and gray Louis Vuitton belt is doing the trick. Blue jeans and a white V-neck make me feel most comfortable. I also have these amazing Kooples black pants that are so comfortable. You can wear them with a sneaker and also a great dress shoe. When I’m performing, I’m usually in all black. Or all black with a pop from a light blue jean jacket or burgundy windbreaker. I love a good quality sweat pant when I am backstage or rehearsing. Those hours can be very long, so I like to be comfortable. My musical influences range from Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand to Freddie Mercury and Elvis. I draw so much from them – different vocal techniques to stage moves and ways to work a stage. I am a curious person and always learning ways to be better. Not perfect, but better. Being on The Voice was such an amazing, powerful experience that taught me that my instincts were far more correct than I thought. I gained a huge sense of self on the show. I absolutely love the 401 – it’s so dope! We have city, beautiful farms, and amazing shoreline. The culinary field in general is so overthe-top. I’m proud to be from Rhode Island. I draw so much inspiration from stories and comments from my fans. They show me so much strength and I am eternally grateful for the love they show. So excited to have released a brand new single and music video called “Soldier.” I love the theme and topic of this song. It’s about believing in yourself and standing your ground in this crazy world. Also, my annual Christmas concert will be December 15 at The Vets in Providence!

HAPPY CHALLAH-DAYS Celebrate Hanukkah with your favorite bread Golden-brown, shiny crust, doughy, rich texture, and that slightly-sweet taste. These are the delights of fresh challah bread. The word “challah” has become synonymous with the egg-based braided baked good, but really the term in Hebrew is used to refer to any bread served during a religious Jewish ritual. At Rebelle Artisan Bagels in Providence, you can find challah baked with customized intricate designs. Owner Milena Pagan

says that many of her regular customers were asking if she could make the bread for Rosh Hashanah. So, she and her production manager took a special trip to London to learn how to make it from a challah specialist, who even shared her own recipe, which the two have brought back to Rhode Island. Says Milena, “We are super excited to bring something different to our local community!” RebelleArtisanBagels.com -Lauren Vella

Go Back in Thyme

Once you enter Back in Thyme Kitchen & Herb Farm, in a cozy little cottage in Hopkinton, and catch a whiff of spice, you know that you’re in for a unique dining experience. Owner, chef, waitress, and “entertainer,” Maryanne “Marne” McNamara patters around the kitchen in water socks and tights, flourishing a cast iron skillet and carrying on about food with the enthusiasm of a zealot, her comments always punctuated with an infectious laugh. Maybe it was the Moroccan Spiced Chili I smelled when I opened the door to Marne’s place. This scrumptious, hearty concoction that I ate with a fork left a subtle aftertaste of spicy heat. Despite my persistence, Marne wouldn’t disclose any ingredients beyond the tender beef, peppers, onions, chickpeas, and garden-fresh butternut squash. “I don’t even tell my daughter,” she says with a laugh. “She has a big mouth!” The menu includes lunch, dinner, and all-day breakfast either in the 10-seat kitchen or for takeout, popular with many regulars. Seasonal outdoor seating is also available. Chicken, beef, pork, veggie, and pasta dishes are offered

daily, with savory sides like garlic sautéed broccoli rabe, cabbage apple slaw with mustard vinaigrette, and tangy, thin-sliced pickled beets. Daily specials depend upon whatever Marne finds fresh, and many choices, like the thick butternut, apple-pear puree are vegan. “We’re in the boonies, so nothing is ever for sure,” she says. But, one thing is certain: The handwritten sign on the front door, “nutritious and delicious,” proved to be true. Food is displayed in Pyrex casseroles and ceramic platters ready for reheating, and if you don’t like your food tepid, request more heating time. Herbs from her garden play a featured role in most dishes and salt is used sparingly. “I’m a kosher salter,” she says, miming sprinkling in the air. “I feel it through my fingers and that’s how I know how much I need.” Her slightly tart iced herbal tea was pink and brewed with mullein, pineapple sage, and raspberries. Shepherd’s Pie, one of my favorites, was the special one night – a heap of mashed potatoes nearly concealed by a rich, brown beef gravy colored with carrots, corn, and peas. Interesting

texture and flavors. Simply delicious. Back in Thyme is also the go-to for awesome meatloaf. Again, Marne wouldn’t disclose all the ingredients, except the mirepoix, her version of the classic French flavor base of finely diced carrots, onions, and celery slow-cooked in butter or olive oil. Her husband Mike says it’s just “beef and love.” He helps with dishwashing and makes big vegan Hiker’s Cookies, a nottoo-sweet confection with nuts, seeds, and fruit – chewy in the center and crunchy on the outside – and a potent energy boost for a winter hike at Hopkinton’s nearby Grills Sanctuary or Pelloni Preserve. “I’ve been cooking since I was a baby,” Marne says, laughing. “I used to pull all the clothes out of my bureau drawers, pretend they were ovens, and cook for my stuffed animals.” She’s still cooking for a devoted clientele,

Huck’s Filling Station is more than a new pit stop Not everyone who sees an abandoned gas station thinks, “This will be the perfect spot for my restaurant!” but Jared Melei, one of the owners of Huck’s Filling Station, says, “I drove by and instantly fell in love.” On the corner of Division and Post Road in Warwick, Jared was most excited to join a community. “We want regulars, a sense of belonging with the people in the neighborhood.” The restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling glass garage doors – “can you imagine how pretty it’ll be in winter?” he says – offers elevated comfort

food. Take, for example, the Gruyere Grits. Decadent and savory, they’re made with local wild mushrooms and hazelnut gremolata: Italian flair mixed with a southern classic. And you must try their cocktails. Bartender extraordinaire Ryan Draine created a “NSFW” that will shatter your expectations of mezcal and tequila. “We want customers to try something new,” Jared says. This filling station is the perfect place to fill up on food and drinks this winter. Now offering brunch Friday-Sunday and dinner seven days a week. KEEL Vodka releases hard seltzer New Englanders love their seltzer water. Now, a Rhode Island distiller has turned this carbonated staple into something party-worthy: KEEL Sparkling, a “vodka soda.” Released in handy little cans, KEEL Sparkling is ready to consume, without the extra step of mixing clear liquor with bubbly soda. Headquartered in Newport, KEEL Vodka has been a breakout success since its first batch was bottled in 2013. Along with its slick label and crisp finish, KEEL specializes in low-carb, gluten-free spirits; a standard serving of vodka contains zero grams of sugar and only 58 calories. The company’s slogan is “Stay Balanced,” and its holistic mission has won over consumers across the northeast and as far as Texas and Colorado. KEEL’s new hard seltzer is also attractive to health-conscious drinkers, with only 80 calories per can. The new soda comes in two varieties, grapefruit and lemon lime. And with only 4 percent alcohol per volume, the new cans make it easy to sip responsibly. KeelVodka.com -Robert Isenberg

Dave’s Market celebrates 50th anniversary And just like that, Dave’s Fresh Marketplace turned 50 years old. It was in 1969 that Dave Cesario opened his fruit stand by the side of West Shore Road, calling it “Dave’s Fruitland.” Only half a century later, that microscopic business grew to become the largest independent supermarket chain in Rhode Island. Dave’s boasts locations across the state, and they are heavily clustered here in South County – in Wickford, Quonset, and East Greenwich. That original location, in nearby Warwick, has been in the process of moving into a former Benny’s on the same road. The company has overseen a lot of moving and shaking, but it still heavily showcases local growers, especially in its produce aisles. At press time, public celebrations were pretty modest. Dave’s solicited videos on social media, with participants raising money for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Whether or not Dave’s throws a bigger party, as you stock up on Confreda Farms’ veggies and Catanzaro’s Pasta Sauce, think a little “thank you” for five great decades. The place was almost called “Renegade.” They laugh about it now. Of the many names considered, Renegade is the only one they remember. But at the time, Revival’s owners drove themselves crazy deciding what to call their new restaurant. Never did they imagine that “Revival” would one day grace a doorway in East Greenwich as well. “Coming up with a name – and coming up with a color of paint – were the two hardest decisions in the whole process,” quips Peter Lowre, co-owner of The Revival

Craft Kitchen and Bar. “We would meet, and we would hash out all these names, and we would turn out empty.” But “revival” had the most significance, and on several levels. For all their years in the dining industry, Peter Lowre, Stephanie Ruggiero, and her fiancé Keegan Dunson had only dreamed of owning their own restaurant. When they stumbled into a vacation venue in Warren, the choice was practically made for them. “We really fell in love with the building,” says Stephanie, a longtime bar manager. The

structure had previously been home to eateries Stella Blues and Bullock’s. Once they installed the bar and (eventually) picked the right paint, the name just felt right. “The place looked so revived. It just has such a multi-dimensional meaning to us.” Peter comes from Boston, Stephanie from Rhode Island, and Keegan from Virginia. They met in the fine-dining kitchens of Cranston and became close; Keegan and Stephanie have been engaged for several years and have a young daughter, Ava. Opening The Revival was a major milestone, allowing them to create farmto-table meals in a rich, down-home environment. Keegan serves as head chef, and critics have praised the mix of comfort food – burgers, paninis – with rotating, high-end entrées, such as the Pan-Seared New Bedford Sea Scallops. “We are doing really good food and service and drink program,” says Keegan, “but we’re making it accessible to people. It doesn’t feel all stodgy. You can relax. It’s a fun atmosphere.” “[Keegan] had the creativity of his own menu,” says Stephanie. “It was really exciting. We’ve done dishes that might seem standard, but he puts his own individual twist on them. I try to do the same thing with drinks. I love classic cocktails, but I love putting my own individual twist. I think it’s a real draw.” The decision to move across the bay felt natural to Peter and Keegan, who weren’t averse to a 35-minute drive from one location to the next. Like Warren, East Greenwich has a robust dining scene, and they felt comfortable nesting among fellow foodies. “Everybody talks about East Greenwich, how it’s a dining mecca, and there’s a lot of activity here,” says Peter. “The thing I always say is, you can’t get people from East Bay to go to West Bay, and vice versa. So instead of trying to get them to come to us, we came to them.” East Greenwich, TheRevivalCraftKitchenAndBar.com

What’s red and green and minty all over? Our festive spin on the classic cocktail! by Elyse Major • photography by Nick DelGiudice

Food & Drink

Could your holiday hosting use a little glitz? Put the cider and eggnog mugs away for a night and pull out all the stops – and martini glasses – for cocktail time! Our mix masters have developed the perfect recipe for hosting a wintertime soiree. It makes use of local ingredients from candy to liquor, and with our simple step-by-step instructions, you’ll be shaking things up like a pro. Skip the alcohol for an all-ages mocktail.

Cos-mint-politan • 2 oz Rhode Island Spirits Rhodium vodka • ½ oz Shrub Organic Cranberry Mint Cocktail Mixer & Drinking Vinegar • ¾ oz triplesec • Unsweetened cranberry juice • A whole fresh lime • A few fresh cranberries • Crushed Sweenor’s peppermint candy (for rim) • Ice (large cubes preferred)

1. Knead a whole lime between your hands gently and then cut in half horizontally. Cut a wheel garnish from one half and set the other half aside for squeezing later.

2. Using the remainder of the garnish half of the lime, wet the rim of your martini glass, and apply the crushed peppermint candy.

3. Combine the Rhodium vodka, Shrub mixer, triplesec, and a few splashes of unsweetened cranberry juice in a shaker. Squeeze in prepared lime half and add ice.

4. Shake vigorously until cold and strain into glass. 5. Garnish with the lime wheel and a few fresh cranberries.
