MIX AND MATCH Karen Giarrusso makes masterful mosaics from her home in East Greenwich A vintage table laden with rhinestones and pearls. A mirror rimmed with beads and stained glass. The letter “G” composed of stones and soldered details. Karen Giarrusso’s masterpieces are colorful and intricate. You could easily lose track of time getting lost in the patterned puzzle, the product of hours or even days of work. Karen’s love for mosaic started when she traveled to Italy to meet her husband’s family. While in Venice, she fell in love with the mosaics in St. Mark’s Church. Then in Ravenna, she decided to learn the craft for herself. “Here I held a piece of a 2,000-year-old mosaic floor in my hand, and I was hooked,” she remembers. Originally from Kentucky, Karen has always been crafty. She grew up

involved, other times inspiration strikes from a photograph or magazine spread. “The base is important,” Karen explains. She’ll work from a base of wood, or for smaller pieces, a lightweight material called Wedi shaped with a jigsaw. Then comes the “fun part,” she describes: Picking out colors and beads, tiles, smalti (cut glass), or millefiori sourced from online and brick-and-mortar shops. She lightly pencils the design onto the base and works from edge to center, knowing “things will change and evolve as I work.” It’s a meditative process involving glue or epoxy, tweezers, and time. “I may work all night on a six-inch section,” Karen says. “I just know when I think it is right and done, and time to move to the next.” Despite her busy schedule, Karen already has next projects lined up

sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She’s always been drawn to ancient art and loves breathing new life into yard sale finds. For the wife and busy mom to a nine-year-old girl, mosaic is a chance to “create and relax my mind with my hands.” The process starts with a space and envisioning what goes there, whether it’s a mirror, picture, or piece of furniture. Sometimes there’s a sketch

in her head, including large pieces for her living room and foyer. “I find unlocking the puzzle to create a piece and the organization involved in the artform mesmerizing,” she says. “It’s my daily meditation!” Find Karen’s mosaic work at KGMosaics.com. Also find her along the West Bay Open Studios Tour on October 26 & 27. East Greenwich -Megan Schmit

Inside the studio of writer, URI professor, and watercolor artist Earline Rae Ferguson

Off The Beaten Path Choose the road less traveled and explore artists based in rural Rhode Island Stimulate your senses as you take a seven-mile scenic driving tour of open studios and exhibits in and around Hopkinton’s rural villages of Hope Valley, Wyoming, Ashaway, Rockville, and Carolina. It’s all part of the 14th Annual HopArts Studio Trail on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20, which showcases the work of 30 local artists using diverse media – oil and watercolor paints, porcelain ceramics, clay pottery, sea glass, fabric, wood, bronze, glass, precious jewels, and found objects. “People seem to really love going into these artists’ studios, experiencing the art firsthand, and being able to talk to an artist about the work. It’s a great way to get the community

14

and tourists involved in the local arts community,” said Faye Pantazopoulos, creative director of the South County Tourism Council, one of the event’s sponsors. It’s an ideal autumn adventure: Search for gold banners and wooden numbers on old New England farmhouses, barns, mills, and other local venues that match the map in the HopArts 2019 brochure. Step inside each place to see artists’ work and learn about their inspirations and creative techniques. “I think we are raising awareness of the importance of art in all our lives and the need to be a supportive community of the arts,” HopArts publicity chairperson Etta Zasloff says. And for the artists, the trail provides a

chance to connect with customers on a more intimate level. This year is clay sculptor Jillian Barber’s second time at the Crandall House in Ashaway during HopArts. Even though she used to sell her work to over 30 stores across the country, she said she prefers to stay closer to home and “do” more retail than wholesale. “It’s more fun to meet the people who are fans of my work.” The 14th Annual HopArts Studio Trail will be held October 19-20 from 10am-5pm. This event is free and open to the public. Area businesses are offering free brochures, which include the map, biographies of participating artists, and images of their work. It is also available online at HopArts.org. -Jan Tormay

Take A Hike Hit the trail, all across the state There is no better time to hike than autumn in New England. The leaves change. The geese honk their way across the sky. The air is crisp and perfect. All over the world, people see photos of our rambling trails – surrounded by that blaze of red and yellow – and they wish they were here.

THE CHALLENGE-SEEKER Even by Rhode Island standards, Mount Tom Trail doesn’t really scale a mountain, yet this six-mile loop is a dynamic promenade through the Arcadia Management Area. Arcadia is our state’s largest recreational plot, and Mount Tom is a beautiful sample of those 14,000 acres: there are rolling hills, massive boulders, and an elegant bridge over a glassy brook, along with scattered overlooks. Mount Tom is considered a “rigorous” hike, so come prepared. Exeter

We have plenty of famous footpaths and multi-use trails, from the Cliff Walk to the East Bay Bike Path. But even lifelong Rhode Islanders don’t know all the rustic routes that await them. There are simply too many parks to compile here, so here are some of our favorite out-of-the-way destinations to break in those new boots. -Robert Isenberg

THE ESCAPIST From the trailhead of the George B. Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge, you can see farms and fields. But the paths runs deep into the woods, over hills and streams. Wildlife is a common sight here, as are the mysterious cairns that dot the landscape. The first loop will get your heart rate up, but the longer loop measures seven miles – which could take most of a day. If you like Parker but don’t have time, try Snake Den State Park, a similar refuge in nearby Johnston. Coventry

THE CROSS-COUNTRY HIKER The Sakonnet Greenway Trail cuts through the well-developed landscape of Aquidneck Island, including farms, a polo field, and the Newport Rifle Club. Yet you’ll also find swathes of swamp and forest, plus 10 miles of paths and secondary paths to explore. To really appreciate this island’s varied terrain, Sakonnet is an illuminating walk. Middletown and Portsmouth

SAFE &

THE BUSHWHACKER Not many places in Rhode Island can qualify as a “valley,” and certainly none as scenic as Ell Pond Preserve. Located so far west that it’s practically in Connecticut, the preserve is a rare glimpse of near-wilderness. The “kettle hole” pond is ringed with sloped banks and dense trees, and on a misty morning, Ell can feel as isolated as an Alaskan fjord. The ground can be slippery, especially on the rocky parts, but for many hikers, these setbacks are a small price to pay for a slice of sylvan serenity. Hopkinton

AFFORDABLE TREE SERVICE COMPANY

THE EXPLORER Ninigret Park is a sprawling park on the southern coast, most famous as the setting for the Frosty Drew Nature Center and Observatory. But there are also playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis and basketball courts. You could spend an entire day exploring this 227-acre landscape. Ninigret has a storied past: until the 1970s, it was home to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station of Charlestown, and the blistered remains of the old airfield can still be seen today. Charlestown

THE WEEKEND WARRIOR Diamond Hill State Park is a playground for scrambling and mountain biking; you’ll find plenty of boulders and slopes, as well as still water and leafy vistas. Meanwhile, Diamond Hill is a quick drive from Mercy Woods, Handy Pond, and the Blackstone Valley Bike Trail. You could spend an entire weekend hopping from one forested sanctuary to the next, which carpet the land between the capital and the Massachusetts border. Cumberland and Lincoln

What do you get when you combine a decades-old mystery with the idyllic setting of Watch Hill? Finding Mrs. Ford, the debut novel by Deborah Goodrich Royce, which came out this summer from Simon & Schuster Publishing. It’s the story of two college girls, Susan and Annie, who become fast friends and the unsolved mystery that follows them through the next 30 years. The story travels from a seedy disco in Detroit in 1979, where the girls are waitresses and mobsters are barely disguising their crimes, to Watch Hill in 2014, where Susan Ford is living a quiet life after the death of her husband. A quiet life, that

is, until the FBI comes knocking, raising questions about people and events she had hoped to leave in the past. If Deborah Royce’s name is familiar, you might recognize it from the former actresses’ TV and film credits, like her stints on All My Children and St. Elsewhere. You might also recognize her as one of Rhode Island’s leading philanthropists: Deborah and her husband, Chuck Royce, are investing significant capital into redeveloping historic properties in Westerly, like what is now The Savoy Bookshop & Cafe, The Knick Music Center, and the soon-to-be-reopened United Theatre. They also own Ocean House, the

luxury hotel they rebuilt from a derelict building, which makes a small appearance in the novel. “Watch Hill and Detroit were like characters to me,” Deborah says. She grew up in Detroit, and now splits her time between her homes in Watch Hill and Connecticut. “I hope they’re fully developed, and they’re realistically portrayed places at the moment in which I look at them. I hope other people recognize those places in the way I talk about them from their own lives.” There are small details throughout that locals will recognize – like the morning cannon salute from Watch Hill Yacht Club at the raising of the flag – that Deborah uses to create a sense of the tiny seaside village. “It’s this magical place that these people are just taking up space for a short moment in,” she says. “Westerly really is an extraordinarily beautiful town.” Deborah Goodrich Royce is hosting an author event at the Westerly Public Library on October 19, and at Bank Street Books in Mystic on December 11. Her book is available at The Savoy and other local booksellers. DeborahGoodrichRoyce.com -Julie Tremaine

The Bards of Wakefield The Contemporary Theater in South Kingstown celebrates 14 years at the Masquerade Gala “They were like, ‘You know what would be fun to do this summer? We should put on a show!’” recalls Maggie Cady, the theater’s general manager. The company migrated around South County, performing at URI, at a local high school, at a library and cafe, until finally renting its current space – the former Hera Gallery – in 2012. “We renovated the whole thing, re-did it all,” says Maggie. “It’s been a wonderful space these past few years.” “There were some great businesses in town, but it was definitely a sleepy, daytime kind of town,” says Christopher, who grew up in Wakefield. He credits several young entrepreneurs with revitalizing the downtown area in the late 1990s. “They put a lot of energy into it. The mindset shifted. Now it’s, ‘Part of my life is lived on Main Street.’” The Contemporary Theater is a busy place. They proudly produce more stage plays than any other venue in the state. The lineup can be edgy, such as Carol Churchill’s unsettling

The Skriker, which played through September. Meanwhile, the theater hosts an astonishing range of performing arts events: The Ocean State Improv Festival takes place here, as well as the impossibly popular Wakefield Idol singing contest. In the summer, the theater hosts a free Shakespeare series in its renovated garden area. Standing on the river’s edge, the property offers easy access to RiverFire and the pedestrian trestle bridge. In recent years, Chris has noticed people passing by – people he knows live in North Kingstown and are escorting friends from elsewhere. “They say, ‘This is our theater,’” says Chris. “I’m like, ‘You’ve never been here! I didn’t think you knew we existed!’ But even if you don’t go, [art spaces] change your relationship and your sense of place. It makes you feel like you’re part of a community, which is something I think we’re all looking for in 2019.” The Masquerade Gala takes place November 1 in Narragansett. ContemporaryTheaterCompany.com -Robert Isenberg

In its own right, the Masquerade Gala is a rapturous event. The Gala takes place at The Towers in Narragansett, one of the most iconic settings in South County. Tables are laden with poker chips, and guests can try their hand at blackjack. Whether you strap on an elaborate Carnivale mask or some cardboard number from CVS, you will fit right in. For 10 years, The Contemporary Theater has drawn supporters to its dance floor. The Masquerade is an important fundraiser, and it’s one heck of a party. But it’s also a chance to reflect on everything The Contemporary Theater has accomplished in the past 14 years. The company started as a one-off summer project in 2005, when Christopher J. Simpson and some friends decided to mount Neil Simon’s comedy Rumors. It wasn’t yet called The Contemporary Theater Company, and they mounted the show in a West Kingston multipurpose building that would eventually become the Courthouse Center for the Arts.

ARTWORK Rhody craft beer cans provide a ready canvas for local brewers and graphic designers

By Robert Isenberg The first beer can was sealed and sold in 1935. The originals looked like soup cans, and the art was simple: a few colors, an inviting font, and a company logo, which tended to look like a medieval coat-of-arms. Microbreweries have changed all that. Brewers routinely invent wacky names, often based on personal references or unknowable inside jokes. The beer can becomes a ready canvas for graphic designers, and the artwork can be as colorful and surreal as the imagination permits. When a can is first laid out, the image looks flat, like an unfurled flag. To really appreciate the aesthetic expertise that goes into them, here’s a glimpse at some Rhode Island-based artwork – and the illustrators who dreamed them up.

REVIVAL BREWING COMPANY Beer: Clever Girl Paloma-Style Summer Ale Artist: A.J. Paglia

Background: “Clever Girl is a shoutout to Jurassic Park, one of our favorites, but science tells us now that velociraptors were much more colorful than they were in the film. Sean [Larkin, founder and brewmaster] wanted to do a Revival spin on mezcal paloma cocktail for summer time, and the two ideas ran together to make a great addition to our brew family.”

GREY SAIL BREWERY Beer: Flying Horse Blonde Ale Artist: Kyle Reichman

Background: “The Flying Horse Blonde Ale label was created to mark the 350th anniversary of the town of Westerly. After doing some research we decided to use the carousel as the theme for the can as it’s one of the more notable landmarks of Westerly [Watch Hill], plus it’s one of the oldest in the country. We were able to incorporate a lot of the features of the horse and saddle as well as the detail in the trim that lines the top of the carousel. The town of Westerly provided the 350th graphic that is being used on their marketing material. The beer will be served at multiple events planned to celebrate the anniversary.”

FOOLPROOF BREWING COMPANY Beer: La Ferme Urbaine Farmhouse Ale Artist: Elizabeth Atlas Weisberg Chang

Background: “The concept behind La Ferme Urbaine, which is French for ‘the urban farm,’ incorporates some of my favorite things to draw – nature and architecture. As a city dweller, drawing plants and landscapes is almost an escape from the excitement of urban life. I am constantly seeking out lush green patches of earth to illustrate! The scene for this project playfully incorporates texture, pattern, and color helps the consumer feel enveloped in a rich environment.”

Feeling Good About Your Physical and Financial Wellness “At Chelsea Groton, we care about the whole person, not just the financial part. If you prioritize travel or philanthropy, or have specific medical needs, we factor that into the personalized, holistic financial plan we work together to develop,” shared John Uyeki, SVP, Director of Financial Services at Chelsea Groton; Financial Advisor, Infinex Investments, Inc. “This helps to ensure people can live the retirement lifestyle they’ve always wanted, though they need to do their part in keeping up with their physical wellness too, to ensure they can do all they’ve planned.”

Wouldn’t planning your future be easier with a trusted advisor by your side? Our team is committed to understanding your challenges and goals, and to develop customized, comprehensive financial plans that align with your hopes for the future. Give us a call at 860-572-4040 or visit chelseagroton.com to understand the benefit of working with seasoned financial advisors who will with you every step of the way.

As people age, health risks and medical costs rise incrementally, so people need to prepare their finances so they feel ready to take on those potential costs if needed. Individuals of all ages should make their physical health a priority to help keep future medical costs at bay. According to Uyeki, “Healthy clients tend to live long, active lives in retirement, and we want to help our clients to prepare financially to do just that.”

Scribe

Calligraphy Studio & Gallery We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it! What it is: A shop and gallery providing custom-designed and hand-lettered goods, along with classes and fine art. Where to find it: Look for striped awnings along Main Street, across from the East Greenwich Commons.

Photography by Savannah Barkley for So Rhode Island

What makes it a Rhody Gem? If you’re a fan of paper goods and the art of calligraphy, Scribe is a must-visit. Recently celebrating three decades in business, owner Jane Parillo Rollins can often be found at her slant board lettering everything from envelopes to citations. “Jane has been a fixture on Main Street for 30 years with minimal fanfare,” begins nominator Bruce Rollins. “Scribe is a Rhody Gem because of the handcrafted, individually produced greeting cards with unique quotations. I still peruse the cards, but most of all, I am fascinated by watching Jane work. The variety of requests for her calligraphy never ceases to amaze me, nor the multiple and unusual items on which people want lettering. She is very approachable so ask her about her current projects. It’s those projects and the speed and accuracy that she employs in completing them which always impress me.”

Fall in Love With Farms

From gazebos to gourds, South County farms bring fresh autumn charm

Photography by Olivia Lecumberry Wilcox

By Lauren Vella

The smell of cinnamon wafting from fresh-baked pies. The satisfying crunch of fallen leaves and scattered hay. Colorful bunches of mums and expansive fields that seem to go on forever. These are the delights of fall on a farm, full of nostalgia and simplicity. In Rhode Island, we’re lucky enough to live minutes from farmland, and in October, we’re able to indulge in perennial activities like pumpkin picking, drinking hot apple cider, and buying fruit pies and sunset-colored blooms. Here’s a sampling of locations offering these quintessential New England charms.

For the Instagrammer Sarah Partyka has loved gardening and farming from the time she was a child. Descended from a long line of green thumbs, she says that caring for plants is “in her blood.” At her natural, lush wonderland, The Farmer’s Daughter, her ancestral passion certainly shines through. The farm is a mecca for gardeners searching for inspiration. Walk through the various greenhouses and gardening huts where you’ll find an abundance of seasonal flowers, shrubs, gourds, and vegetables. Take a pumpkin centerpiece class where you decorate one using cut flowers from the farm’s garden, try your hand at designing a pumpkin display with succulents. The farmstead also has Harvest Festivals planned for weekends through October with hayrides, antique tractors, pumpkin slingshots, pumpkin checkers, pumpkin bowling, and more! South Kingstown, TheFarmersDaughterRI.com

For the Sweet Tooth

For the Adventurer Escape to Clark Farms, where activities reach beyond the ordinary and into the adventurous. Wander through two miles of corn maze searching for clues to find what they refer to as “the lost city.” Then take a trip to the “mining mountain” where kids can look for their own hidden treasures and take a turn or two on the mine mountain slide. Vast corn puzzles and swashbuckling endeavors aside, Clark Farms is known for their delectable mini donuts, so be sure to pick up a dozen (or two)! Matunuck, ClarkFarms.com

Photography by Olivia Lecumberry Wilcox

At Highland Farm you’ll find homemade pies with just about every kind of filling. Try their original slatted apple pie, or indulge in a decadent banana cream creation. The bakery even takes special orders for Thanksgiving, and customers can pick up a fresh-baked pie the day before the turkey is carved. If you’re early enough, you can also get Allie’s Donuts at the farmstand before they sell out (and they do indeed sell out). Whilst perusing, pick up some apples, harvested produce, and of course, pumpkins! Wakefield, HighlandFarmRI.com

For Apple Addicts Spring Hill Sugar House offers apple cider demonstrations on weekends to its visitors. The cider purveyors also have a corn maze cut in the shape of a maple leaf, a symbol of their most popular item, maple syrup. After you’ve braved the depths of the maze, stroll through the five-acre pick-your-own pumpkin patch to grab a gourd straight off the vine. Exeter, Facebook: Spring Hill Sugar House

For A Good Cause

For the Veggie Lover Dubbed by frequent visitors as “the best corn in the area,” Carpenter’s Farm is the place if you want to buy sweet corn and tomatoes. The stand also offers seasonal fruits and vegetables like beets, cabbage, winter squash, and more. If you go into their bake shop, just try and resist buying one of their strawberry-rhubarb pies. Wakefield, CarpentersFarmstand.com

Photography by Olivia Lecumberry Wilcox

Known for their impeccable customer service and “stress-free” environment, Harvest Acres Farm is well worth a visit. The nonprofit farm was established when owners John and Cindy Duncan lost their daughter Cassie to suicide in 2005. Their employees are part of a free mental health rehabilitative program, and all proceeds go back into helping their employees. On October 13, Cindy says the farmstead will host a day of fall fun dubbed “Harvest Acres Country Fun Fest.” Expect pumpkin painting, donut decorating, a small petting zoo, a selfie station with sunflower and pumpkin cutouts, cornhole, checkers (played with miniature pumpkins!), and more. Harvest Acres will also unveil their new addition: a community gazebo. Richmond, HarvestAcresFarm.org

Map Quest With its historic homes, charming commercial district, and scenic harbor, there’s so much to love about Wickford. Display that adoration of the small North Kingstown village in your home with a range of items made specifically for Wickford Gourmet Factory Outlet. Joe and Donna Dube started their business 38 years ago, first as Wickford Gourmet Food and then as Wickford Kitchen and Table. Through contacts made at trade shows, they connected with vendors who offered the couple overstocks, discontinued merchandise, and change of season linen closeouts, “thus began Wickford Factory Outlet,” says Joe of his store, where items can be found at 50-60 percent off regular prices. In addition to Wickford-branded products, find everything for a cook’s kitchen from open stock dishes and cutlery, to gadgets, linens, glassware, and more.

ig things are happening at Wood River Health Services, a private, nonprofit community health center devoted to quality patient care. In July, they opened a second center in Westerly in addition to the one in Hope Valley. In August, they were the only health center in RI to be recognized as a National Quality Leader by the US Department of Health and Human Services. They also achieved Gold Status as a Health Center Quality Leader and ranked in the top ten percent of all health centers for best overall clinical performance. “WRHS is a patient-centered medical home that has been serving the community for almost 45 years,” says President & CEO Alison Croke. “Like all health centers, we are rooted in the community.” Their mission is to improve the health and well-being of the community “by assuring access to affordable high-quality healthcare, coordinated services, and health related information.” WRHS offers primary medical, dental (Hope Valley only), and behavioral services. They provide case management, Women, Infants and Children program, community resource specialists, and certified insurance navigators. They currently run smoking cessation and pain management groups, and accept most insurance, including Medicare/Medicaid. And now, WRHS is accepting new patients at both their Westerly and Hope Valley sites. So, if you’re looking for care that puts you first, call to schedule today.

Other times, I want to be ‘seen’ and will add in a ginormous knit scarf or go with an A-line dress or skirt. One of the best parts about fall and winter is rolling out the black tights and bodysuits I’ve accumulated over the years to wear with skirts and dresses. I have yet to find something that’s matte and opaque enough for my taste. You can’t go wrong with a fitted black turtleneck, especially this time of year. My vision has been on the decline since the fourth grade, but it’s only been the last few years that I’ve embraced statement glasses (and sunglasses, too) in a big way. The bigger the glasses the better. Not like Elton John from the ‘70s big, but more like Jenna Lyons, Demi Moore, or Linda Rodin. Also, a fantastic bag, necklace, or scarf are other fallbacks for zhushing up a simple outfi for dinner at J22 in Jamestown. Not sure whether it’s a blessing or a curse, but I can shop anywhere, from thrift shops to department stores, online, and local boutiques like Gossip or Green Ink in Wickford or Galapagos in Charlestown. I dressed up when I worked in retail. It was a serious and sometimes competitive business. When I first launched the blog, I went in the opposite direction with mostly casual looks, kind of a rebellion against all that. These days, I’m back to dressing up, but in a less stuffy way. Fall is all kinds of fun, especially when it comes to getting dressed! In addition to turtlenecks and tights, I’m also a super big fan of statement jackets and coats. A beautiful coat can really elevate something every day and turn it into a WOW! look.

A South Kingstown home gets a makeover to match its location

The first time Susan Appleby saw what would become her family’s second home, it was covered in six inches of fresh snow. In fact, Susan, husband Bob, and their three sons made several treks to the Matunuck property from Manhattan, each time in inclement weather. “The day we finally saw it in the sunshine was the day we signed the papers,” Susan recalls. Situated near Potter Pond in South Kingstown, the expanded Cape looks out onto Matunuck Oyster Farm. Of the location, Susan remarks that it offers the perfect combination of saltwater pond and ocean access. “We were always mesmerized by the beauty of the water outside the large windows. We love kayaking and boating on the pond, and the town beach is a short walk away. We also enjoy

the wildlife that returns to the pond after the summer season.” One element that Susan was not so fond of was the existing interior. “There were chickens and birds everywhere! In the toile wallpaper, hidden in wrought iron chandeliers, and in the window valances,” she says. “We wanted the house to reflect the coastal location and be a bright, comfortable beach house. Nice, but very livable. I didn’t want any fancy rooms that were off-limits.” Susan called Kim Peterson of KEP Interior Designs of East Greenwich,

who got to work transforming: switching out chicken motifs for oceanic, and warm shades for a cooler range. “We like color, and Kim is very comfortable working color in” says Susan, who gave Kim a house key, allowing the designer to update spaces while the family was in New York. Adding to the mix, Kim brought in textiles with graphic punch ranging from pillows to bedding to window treatments. Waterside accents in rooms go from subtle – a driftwood table stand – to bold – a school of silver fish that seem to float along the dining room wall. Taking a cue from the oyster farm outside, the dining room features a round mirror framed in shells and fabric valances have a swirly oyster-like print. While furnishings are new, the home also has many personal artifacts. “There’s a watercolor painting of the house my father grew up in; an old hurricane oil lamp from my family’s farm in upstate New York; and several needlework pieces that I have created over the years have found a home here. I like that mix of old and new,” says Susan. “The pace of life is very different here! A sense of calm serenity comes over me every time we turn down the road off the highway.”

Any Way You Slice It

Ever since my dad returned home from Caserta’s on Federal Hill decades ago with a crispy, steaming pie topped with tomato sauce, cheese, pepperoni, and black olives in that iconic red-and-white box, I’ve had an enduring love affair with pizza. One night in late summer, I needed a quick fix and stumbled upon Slice & Company: a hip, new, standing-only pizza joint in East Greenwich launched in June by three friends: Mollie Reynolds, Jason Kindness, and Ming Wu. In New York City, where I’ve spent a lot of time, the classic cheesy slice, a thin, floppy wedge that most New Yorkers fold before eating, is never more than a few blocks away. I prefer mine unfolded, severing gooey strands of mozzarella stretching from mouth to slice with my fingers. The arrival of Slice & Company just inched Rhode Island’s pizza scene a bit closer to a perfect New York slice – no need for folding. About 16 assorted pies like Figgy Piggy, Drunken Prom Queen, and Maui-Waui were ready for reheating. The “Frankie Funguy”, a golden brown, blistered crust and a hint of char, smothered with roasted mushroom ricotta,

mozzarella, pepperoni, and shiitake mushrooms and braised in Whalers Rise beer was slid, steaming from the oven. I ordered a slice and savored the rich fusion of flavors, light crunch, and tender shiitakes raised on Little Compton logs by Jason’s dad. “Something local touches every pie,” said Jason, who sources ingredients from family and community. They also make their own tomato sauce, hand tossed dough, sausage, and flavored ricotta. Two months before opening, Jason didn’t know how to make pizza, so he invited Angelo Carlone, owner of North Carolina’s famed Tipsy Tomato, for a three-day pizza marathon. “His crust was the best I ever had,” said Jason, “flavor and a bit of a char.” Jason, also a partner at nearby 241 Main and Kai Bar, was named “Most Imaginative Bartender” by GQ in 2014. Using dough as blank canvas, he’s adapting his cocktail wizardry to artful, imaginative pizzas, and with his partners, creating novel pies like Captain Waffles – mozzarella, Captain Crunch-breaded fried chicken, waffles, bacon, drizzled maple syrup, and a sprinkle of Captain crumbs.

I’m a pizza purist, but was surprised at how much I enjoyed this best seller. (Too bad they’re not open for breakfast, it could be a perfect way to start the day.) Late night crowds spilling out of local bars have discovered Slice & Company as the go-to for satisfying pizza. “We needed this,” said Neil Cottrell, a frequent customer, who noted the dearth of late night choices after bar hopping. His companion, Natasha sampled Napoleon Dynamite, the evening’s special – tater tots, ranch dressing, bacon, and Captain Crunch fried chicken. “You see differentMarghuerita pies every pizza time,” she said. “Never know what you’re going to get.” Innovation seems to be the rule here, without sacrificing tradition. Slice & Company offers the most unusual combinations I’ve encountered, but my favorite was Littlefoot: tasty crust topped with roasted garlic ricotta, mozzarella, bok choy, caramelized onion, and parmesan – YUM! I also enjoyed the Drunken Prom Queen, Slice’s take on the Margherita with pesto and parmesan added. My friend Patricia got

hooked on Frankie Funguy. Slice’s vibe is upbeat – catchy “bop-worthy” tunes, seductive aromas, and warm, friendly staff. Local band Rocksteady Reggae was playing the night I was there. “The key is hospitality. Be kind to people, welcome them, speak to them,” said Jason, echoing the import of his surname. “Hospitality buys your way out of a lot of mistakes.”

Food & Drink | Rhody Recipe

CALL US RHODE FASHIONED We put a regional spin on this classic cocktail

By Elyse Major & Nick DelGiudice

As the days shorten, we tend to put away the paper parasols and patterned straws and trade drinks that resemble sunsets in a glass for something a little darker and dare we say, dignified. With so many local makers in the mix, we were inspired to create a concoction based on an Old Fashioned recipe and rename it the Rhode Fashioned. Rich and subtle and in the palette of the season, this drink is perfect for making a brisk evening oh-so-cozy.

RECIPE

RHODE FASHIONED INGREDIENTS • 2 ounces of Sons of Liberty Battle Cry American Single Malt Whiskey • 2-4 dashes of King Ramsey Starfruit Bitters • 1 medium to large sugar cube • 1 small peeled orange slice (keep peel for twist) • 1 large fresh cherry • a few dashes of water

DIRECTIONS In a small rocks or old fashioned glass add a large sugar cube, halved and pitted cherry, peeled orange slice, a few splashes of water, and 2-4 drops of Starfruit Bitters. Muddle well until sugar is dissolved (remove the cherry peel after muddling if not broken down). Add 2 ounces of whiskey and one large ice cube to the glass and stir. Twist the citrus peel to release the oils and run it around the rim of the glass, then drop into the cocktail and serve.

It’s seldom that you happen upon a small business on the cusp of something big like Hard-Pressed Cider Company. The experience is a bit like following Lizzo or Kendrick Lamar before they were big and before they were “cool”. And although cider is very different from rap and hip hop, a business – be it music or food and drink – is still a business. Expansion is a risk, but if done right, can lead to great reward. This is the juncture at which owners Jaclyn and Rob Swanson find themselves, ready to start a family-owned farm and cidery. The adventure started in a college dorm room at URI when Rob was a student. The hobby quickly became a “party trick” and soon, his peers were asking him to come to their living space, press apples, and center a celebration around it. When Rob saw how popular his product was, he got the idea to turn it into a business. After a brief stint in 2011 pressing apples at different farms, Rob decided to stay put and opened up HardPressed on his aunt’s property, Windmist Farm in Jamestown. That same year, Rob’s wife Jaclyn joined the business, excited for the possibilities that it held. Pressing your own cider is a complex, multi-step process of washing, grinding, layering, pressing, and fermenting the apples in stock. The company also uses only fresh apples, and no sugar is added to their yields once the pressing is done. This operation takes place in a small food trailer, and once the cider is ready, its sold directly from the place it’s made. In the fall, the couple gets a few large crates of apples each week from a local New England orchard. Jaclyn says that depending on the kind of apples as well as how far into the season you are, their cider will change from week to week. “We find that that makes us unique… [Our customers] are actually really excited to taste that difference. From early season apples to late season apples you can really taste the huge difference in the cider. Early season cider is a little bit more tart, not quite as flavorful, but some people prefer it

over late season cider which is more thick and syrup-y.” From Labor Day to Christmas, both Jaclyn and Rob are busy on the weekends slinging cider and donuts. However, they have greater plans to make cider their full-time job. Jaclyn says that the couple just bought a farm in West Greenwich that needs some work. But eventually, the two would like to grow their own apples and get into making hard cider, an endeavor that demands

Some people say that size doesn’t matter, and in Providence Bagel’s case, it’s true. The ever-expanding local bagel chain (or shall we say, fledgling breakfast food empire) has bought and opened its third store in just as many years, this time setting up shop in a tiny 500-square-foot store on URI’s Kingston campus. Owner Chris Wietecha says that you’ll still be able to get all of your Providence Bagel favorites here, plus other special sweet treats from KNEAD Doughnuts. It wasn’t Chris’s plan to take over the space in Kingston, the opportunity fell into his lap. “One day I got a letter in the mail that someone was selling a bagel shop in South County. I responded to this mailing with a phone call, and set up an appointment to go look at it,” says Chris. The building was actually not an old bagel store, but a snack shack. It turned out to be exactly the kind of property that the owner was looking for. After six weeks of hard work, crazy hours, and charming design, the new Providence Bagel made its debut on August 24.

SORhodeIsland.com • October 2019

Like the North Main Street location in Providence, the URI shop will get its deliveries from North Providence, where Providence Bagel does all of its baking for the business. However, the eatery will also serve Knead donuts daily, a new facet to the menu not available at any of the other sister stores. The number three seems to be Chris’s magic number these days. The fast casual restaurateur is on his third shop, his third year in business, and he will soon be a father, thrice over. But he doesn’t want to stop there. He picked up some help from a former Chick-Fil-A general manager along the way. “My long term goals are to continue to expand and create a regional chain… [she] has really helped nail down the day to day operations.” Aspirations aside, Chris is still solidifying his operations at the URI Emporium, but you never know where another one of his places is going to pop up next! Kingston, ProvidenceBagel.com. -Lauren Vella

Celebrate Oktoberfest the local way

October holidays are designed for people to let loose. Halloween is our chance to dress up in costume and eat candy. Oktoberfest is the chance to vaguely celebrate German heritage and drink lots and lots of beer (responsibly, of course). Say “Ja!” to local brews For the past few months, Rhode Island breweries have busied themselves fermenting autumnal beers. Pumpkin spice is a favorite flavor, of course, and you can’t do better than Whalers’ #Pumpkinbeer; head over to the South Kingstown location to procure a pint. But the famous Munich festival is a brewmaster’s chance to show off traditional techniques. For example, Apponaug Brewing is putting out a “Festbier” in late September, and it’s the perfect excuse to make the drive to this bright and spacious brewery in Warwick. Keep an eye out for other Oktoberfest entries from South County’s many breweries. ApponaugBrewing.com Attend an Oktoberfest celebration Nothing beats an actual Oktoberfest celebration, complete with dirndls, polka, and Alpine caps. Wakefield comes alive with its sprawling Oktoberfest celebration, where you can browse more than 100 vendors, take photos with Big Nazo monsters, and listen to live folk music in the outdoor Biergarten. The event showcases German cuisine and all the beer you can swig. For Rhode Island, it doesn’t get more “authentisch” than this. October 5, Facebook: Wakefield Oktoberfest. -Robert Isenberg
