TRAILBLAZERS In the fine art world, Blazing Editions puts Little Rhody on the map When the fine art printing company Blazing Editions started 20 years ago, it was out of a basement. It took Vice President Josef Blazar’s father 45 minutes to produce a single print, “feeding” the machine by hand. Today, they operate out of a more than 20,000-square-foot renovated mill space in East Greenwich and cater to artists and photographers around the globe. “The art world, much like that of technology, changes fast,” says Josef, who details the evolution Blazing Editions has seen from its humble start. They’ve expanded into a three-pronged operation, adding a retail gallery (YJ Contemporary) and distribution component (Blazing Publications) that acts as an “art agent” for their clients. They’ve printed for the likes of Harry Benson, Anne Packard,
and Josef Kote, and local artists like Onne Vander Wal and Nick Paciorek. They’ve added services like delivery, mounting, and installation to their repertoire. Their equipment is state-of-the-art. They’ve been nationally recognized. Their team is small but mighty, and all have their own connection to the art world. “We’re a want not need kind of business,” Josef reflects. Despite the rise of print services found at office supply stores or online retailers, Blazing continues to grow. And as Josef points out, there is a reason why “artists, designers, galleries, and publishing firms from around the world come to Little Rhody to have their artwork produced.” East Greenwich, Blazing.com -Megan Schmit

A Cut Above How one South Kingstown family turned a hobby into an experimental business
Kids can be entrepreneurial, when they want to be. Squeezing lemonade. Mowing lawns. Babysitting. And – in the case of the Blair family – sharpening knives. “It started as sharpening things for my father’s buddies,” says Isabel Blair, who is all of 13 years old. At first, sharpening knives was a hobby that Isabel shared with her sister Abby – who is all of eleven. But then their father, Todd Blair, proposed starting an actual business. “He threw the idea out there,” recalls Isabel, “but I didn’t think he was going to purchase a machine.” And not just any machine. Todd found a professional knife-sharpener, to the tune of $7,000. Yet the equipment was no impulse buy. Todd has worked for 25 years in sales and marketing, and he’s an authority in environmental science and economics. “By

training, my job is to look for those opportunities where you can have a good environment and good jobs,” says Todd, who has worked extensively with blue-chip companies. Also, many years ago, Todd worked for Dean & DeLuca, the luxury food emporium in New York City. “Knives were a big part of that job,” he remembers. “There are a few things I’m finicky about, and one is a sharp knife.” In a way, B’Ladies is an exercise in micro-business, so that Abby and Isabel can learn how startups actually start up. The first step was to create a name – they considered “Blade Runners” and “Roller Bladies” – and they settled on a phrase that Todd calls “confusing but memorable.” Then, about a year ago, they started setting up shop in South County farmers markets, reviving dull knives and scissors in as little
as three minutes. Their motto is “sharpen while you shop.” “I am just so delighted with how the reception has been,” says Todd. Not only has the company earned back its $10,000 investment, but B’Ladies attracts customers from all over. “People come to us as if they’ve found the Fountain of Youth. They see us and say, ‘I’m so happy we’ve found you!’ We get some pretty broken-down blades. A lot of it is really built around safety, for use at the market and use at home.” “People are just excited,” adds Isabel. “You don’t realize your knives are dull, because you fall into a routine.” So – how big could B’Ladies get? Is this a knife-sharpening Uber in the making? Says Isabel: “We’re still deciding what level we want to be on.” BladiesRI.com -Robert Isenberg

The Second Act Local advocates will breathe dramatic new life into Westerly’s United Theatre
Actor Richard Jenkins shown being interviewed on stage by Tony Nunes
Few living people remember seeing Vaudeville, but when the United Theatre was first constructed in 1926, it was designed to host these raucous variety shows. The stately brick building stood on Canal Street in Westerly, and townsfolk would gather there for music and comedy. Vaudeville didn’t last, of course. The United turned into a movie theater, and then, unceremoniously, its doors closed in 1986. The theater has been empty ever since. “I used to walk by the theater,” says Tony Nunes, a Westerly native who was born just
too late to catch a flick at the United. “I’ve always been into film. It’s always been my personal passion. I always had the dream of winning the lottery and opening it again.” Incredibly, that dream is coming true. The Westerly Land Trust purchased the abandoned building in 2006, and there’s been talk of resuscitation ever since. The project picked up speed in 2014, thanks to a nonprofit called the Ocean Community United Theatre, Inc. Spearheading the project are Dennis Algiere, executive vice president of the Washington Trust Company,
and philanthropist Chuck Royce, among many others, who have nearly completed a $12 million capital campaign to finance the project. When Tony read about the initiative in the local paper, he asked to get involved. He had studied communications and film at URI, and he knew the cultural importance of the structure. Tony now works for the Trust and is integral to the project. “They’ve given me multiple [titles] over the years,” he says, “but basically I lead the programming and marketing for the theater.” (continued on next page)

EAT FISH! LOVE LIFE!
Artist rendering of United Theatre’s soon-to-be new look
OPEN DAILY • PORT OF GALILEE
Put bluntly, the United Theatre project is big – bigger than many Westerly natives even realize. It’s bigger, in fact, than the Washington Trust originally intended. The auditorium has already been converted into a 600-seater, with movable seating and a malleable stage. “It’s a big open space in there,” says Tony. “That allows us to have complete versatility. We can do runway shows. We can do theater in the round. It doesn’t hold you to one stage, in one direction. We can do all kinds of things in that space. The renovation will extend into the Montgomery Ward building next door, complete with classrooms, practice and screening rooms. The Rhode Island Philharmonic will host classes there. The Public’s Radio, based in Providence, plans to headquarter a South County bureau there. When the restaurant Twisted Vine closed, the Trust started incorporating that restaurant space into its plans. They are hoping for an accessible brasserie, where entertainment-seekers can grab sustenance before and after shows.
18
SORhodeIsland.com • September 2019
Originally, the United renovation was supposed to take place in phases. But with their financial goal nearly reached, the Trust hopes to open the entire facility in the fall of 2020. The new United will even build a special walkway between the main theater and the Knickerbocker Cafe, the music hotspot located a block away. The Knickerbocker is just one of many established partners, including the Newport Folk Festival, Salt Marsh Opera, and Trinity Repertory Company. Since the United won’t be a “producing” theater, the space will be available for touring companies, along with local producers. Music, lectures, stage plays, dance shows – anything is possible. “Westerly has done really well in the last decade or so with its downtown growth,” says Tony. “It’s still a big summer community. You have people going to the beach, and a lot of people are coming downtown. But we’re hoping the theater will be the catalyst for even more.” Westerly, UnitedTheatre.org -Robert Isenberg

Nestled between Narragansett Town Beach, Boston Neck Road, and Narragansett’s elementary school and community center is Canonchet Farm. Its 165 acres of historical landscape and home to nonprofit organization Friends of Canonchet Farm (FOCF). Formed in 2007, FOCF’s mission is to preserve and improve the farm in cooperation with Narragansett’s Parks & Recreation
Department. From the very beginning, members wanted to introduce people to the trail that meandered through the sprawling property through weekly guided walks, in hopes that they’d eventually evolve into educational events for the public. Since, these walks have regularly drawn groups of over 30 people who venture through the landscape of scenic salt and freshwater marshes and

ponds, swamps, vernal pools, a brook, and drier uplands. It’s a landscape FOCF President Kathie Kelleher describes as “incredibly diverse.” By demonstrating and educating visitors about the historical and ecological value of the land, FOCF hopes to protect these natural areas from degradation by invasive plant species. Each year from May to September, volunteers keep these invasive plants from growing around the ponds by replacing them with those sprouted from native-sourced seeds from the Rhode Island Natural History Survey. The rest of the year, volunteers work to maintain the one-and-a-half-mile trail through the woods. Kathie highlights the team of volunteers, artists, donors, and URI students that dedicate their time and finances to the work they do on the property. Organizations like the Boy and Girl Scouts and URI programs including Master Gardening, Continuing Education, and Invasive Plant Management Certification, have used the property. Kathie points out that the South County Museum is located on Canonchet Farm, and the pair work cooperatively to develop programs aligned with both of their missions. Moving forward, FOCF hopes to develop school programs using materials that detail the significance of the property. For example, they recently developed a flyer that describes the geological change the trail has seen over the last 10,000 years. They’re also working on one that showcases its history, from early European activity and division into plantations to Governor Sprague’s home, that they hope to have this completed by next spring. Both trails will post signage to direct people to sites on both walks, to be created and installed by a local Boy Scout. On behalf of FOCF, Kathie says they feel that “this small property is a microcosm of the natural and social history of the Northeast” and are hopeful their programs will teach the public about the importance of this history. Cookies make people do crazy things. A century ago, Marcel Proust bit into a madeleine; that moment inspired him to write his 4K-page autobiography. In 2011, Hillary Ramos decorated her first cookie to help celebrate her son’s birthday. That moment inspired her to keep decorating, create her own stencils, and master the art of cookie airbrushing. Today, Hillary has recast herself as The Cookie Countess, and her Warwick-based brand has won fans around the world. Her instructive YouTube channel claims nearly 10,000 subscribers. She sells a range of cookie-related gear, like cutters, piping bags, and rolling pins. She has a special line of kosher and gluten-free tools. She
hosts classes, mostly geared toward women with a sweet tooth – and many have started lucrative side-hustles as custom-cookie decorators. Early on, Hillary conscripted her husband for sales and marketing, and her team has ballooned ever since. “The dessert industry as a whole has been skyrocketing,” says Hillary. “Think of how Pinterest, Instagram, and Internet shopping have given the inspiration and made it available to make anything happen at your wedding or special occasion. Nobody has just a cake anymore – it’s all about the dessert table.” The company recently moved into a 5,000-square-foot warehouse, and they have started using 3D printers to churn out specialty

cookie cutters. Hillary takes pride in her company’s prompt shipping schedule and thorough customer service. Prior to decorating cookies, Hillary didn’t think of herself as a visual artist. Her academic background was in English Literature, but art classes? “Nothing too formal,” she says. “Lots of photography, but ask me to draw a picture with a crayon and I can’t do it. Somehow it is easier with a piping bag and much better with stencils. I taught myself any graphic design skills I needed over the years.” She adds: “I’ve always loved baking, though.” TheCookieCountess.com -Robert Isenberg

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Ken Abrams, “so I’m thrilled and honored to be starting.” What he’s always wanted to do is start his own radio show, “Free Form Folk”, which
now airs twice a month on college station WRIU. The new program will showcase a variety of folk, blues, and jazz artists, as well as Ken’s robust knowledge of these genres.

“Free form is a radio format where the DJ has total control over what is played, unlike commercial radio, which is usually pre-programmed,” Ken explains. “It allows for the DJ’s voice to be heard. So that means if the spirit takes me from Bob Dylan to Joni Mitchell to Miles Davis, that’s what you’ll hear.” Ken knows how to present cool content. For the past 31 years, he’s taught social studies at Scituate Middle School. He often incorporates music into his curriculum, including Civil War ditties and 1960s protest songs. Ken’s audience grew substantially in 2012, when he started writing about music for various local publications (including So Rhode Island). He now contributes regularly to local site WhatsUpRhodeIsland as well as national periodicals like No Depression. As Ken became more involved in the music scene, he decided to start volunteering for WRIU. Most of us know that 90.3FM is operated by the University of Rhode Island, but many are surprised by its prominence: “WRIU is one of the few college radio stations in the region still broadcasting over the airwaves,” notes Ken, and the signal can be heard as far as away as Long Island. A fan of many years, Ken started volunteering for the station, then pitched his own show. “Free Form Folk” kicked off with a smattering of tracks and introductions, but Ken plans to host on-air interviews with musicians as well. He’ll also post the songs he plays on a Spotify playlist, so that listeners can revisit them later. Ken’s palate is broad, but he’s particularly proud of the growing musical culture in his home state. “Rhode Island has a dynamic, ever-changing music scene,” he says. “It’s tough for artists to make a living at it, so many have day jobs, but the quality of the music is right up there with what you hear in NYC and Boston. The challenge is to get folks to get out and listen.” Catch “Free Form Folk” the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 90.3FM, or stream it live at WRIU.org -Robert Isenberg

Bodey’s hairstyle. My cancer. My nurse knew all about both. “My nurse Kathleen knew a lot about me by the end of my treatment,” said Jason Duffin, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma and treated at the South County Health Cancer Center. “She knew I loved playing pool and how my grandson Bodey styled his hair.” That’s because our team gets to know each patient as an individual. When Jason was spending eight hours a day at our Cancer Center for chemotherapy treatment, Kathleen Hemphill, RN, and her fellow caregivers came to know Jason as a person, not a patient. And for Jason, that made all the difference. Today, he has been cancer free for four years and is excited to see Bodey (and his hair) grow. 401-783-6670 ~ www.southcountyhealth.org/starthere

STRINGS ATTACHED Locally made and sold aprons are perfect for keeping your cool in the kitchen
By Elyse Major
If the idea of wearing an apron evokes an eye-roll, it’s no wonder. For years, the garment has represented drudgery or at least the dated idea of being tied to the kitchen – and not in a foodie kind of way. From Cinderella to sitcom moms, pop culture is filled with characters swathed at the waist in no-frills white cotton. Today’s apron makers and sellers are challenging that notion by offering styles and designs that signal you are cooking up a storm and looking cool as a cucumber doing so. Here we share a sampling of aprons from around the state. From no-fuss to fabulous, for the serious cook or playful host, you’re sure to find one that suits your style (and keeps you clean).
COASTAL COOL Look effortlessly chic while keeping your clothes clean in an indigo kelp-patterned apron. So decorative, you’ll want to display it on a hook when not in use. Christina’s Ltd., Westerly, ChristinasLtd.com Kelp print, $28.

Staycations Make the most of off-season deals at these 5 CLOSE-TO-HOME DESTINATIONS By Bob Curley
South County is one of the best beach destinations in New England and like Cape Cod and Newport, only gets better after Labor Day when most of the tourists depart and leave the locals to enjoy the beaches minus the crowds and traffic. Add easy-to-get dinner reservations at even the most popular restaurants and off-season hotel rates, and September and October become the best time of year to enjoy a South County “staycation” whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or some quality time by the shore with the kids.

Romantic Rhody
“A lot of people think you have to get in the car and drive out of state to get away, but we’re fortunate that we live in Rhode Island and it’s beautiful,” says South County hotelier John Bellone, owner of the Breezeway Hotel in Misquamicut and the Hotel Maria, a new boutique hotel that opened on the beach last summer. The hotel’s spacious, mid-century inspired decor and laid-back luxury is best captured in the four 4th-floor Seascape Suites, which each have two bedrooms, two baths, a living room and kitchen – maybe more than you need for a romantic getaway, but you can’t beat the ocean views from the spacious balconies. Mediterranean cuisine is served nightly through mid-September at Maria’s Seaside Cafe (and on weekends after that); hotel guests can order room service through the restaurant or make their way downstairs for a leisurely Sunday brunch that features bottomless Bellinis. Offseason rates starting September 2 make Hotel Maria affordable as well as romantic: expect to pay 30-40 percent less than you would in the summer, with rooms starting around $200 nightly. Get Active

The Break in Point Judith is a boutique hotel with 16 stylish rooms and rooftop bar, Chair 5, with indoor/ outdoor seating and ocean views. It’s also situated within easy biking distance of three of Rhode Island’s best beaches – Narragansett, Scarborough, and Roger Wheeler – making it a delight for an active getaway. And you can pack light: the hotel will lend you bikes and equip you with beach towels and backpack chairs for a day on the sand. Other nearby options for active outings include Fisherman’s Memorial State Park, which hosts a popular Sunday morning farmers market through the end of October, and the fishing village of Galilee with its restaurants, bars, fishing charters, whale watching tours, and the ferry to Block Island. The hotel concierge can arrange for kayak paddles on the Narrow River and surfboard rentals or lessons at Narragansett Beach. When you need a break from the action, The Break has a heated outdoor saltwater swimming pool that’s open year-round and a small spa and fitness room. Starting October 1, Rhode Island residents can get 10 percent off room rates and a $25 food credit for stays on Sunday-Thursday nights; staying two nights earns 20 percent off the second night, three is 30 percent off the third night, and staying four nights gets you 40 percent off the fourth night. Fall in the Family
The Breezeway Resort
Fall is back-to-school time, and while that makes it tough to squeeze in an extended vacation, it’s a great opportunity to reconnect with a family staycation. Misquamicut’s Breezeway Inn has hotel rooms, studios, suites, and a cottage to accommodate families of all sizes, and stays include continental breakfast, WiFi so the kids don’t feel disconnected from their friends, and free loaner bikes that you can use to pedal to the beach (just three blocks away), the Watch Hill lighthouse, and the Atlantic Beach amusement park, which stays open ‘til late October. Rates after September 2 start at $169 nightly. BreezewayResort.com Westerly’s historic Weekapaug Inn has been welcoming families since 1899, and the Relais & Chateaux hotel’s history of refined but kid-friendly hospitality has been enhanced in recent years by a $20 million renovation that included creating more spacious rooms and adding lots of on-resort activities, including a resident naturalist to lead nature hikes, motorboat outings on Quonochontaug Pond, and endless kids’ activities organized by staff at the resort’s boathouse recreation center, including moonlight kayak paddles and seal-watching expeditions. And don’t miss the fall pasta nights at the Inn’s restaurant, with three courses of fresh salad, homemade bread, and pasta served family-style, followed by passed desserts. The resort offers a 10 percent discount on stays in October and November (some blackout dates and restrictions apply). WeekapaugInn.com
Cottage Life
Rhode Island may be a small state, but that doesn’t stop countless urban residents from keeping a summer cottage by the beach in the summer, even if it takes a trip of under an hour to make the transition from work life to vacation mode. If you want to do South County like a local, pack a bag for a weekend at the Point Break Cottages in Misquamicut. Owned by Kevin Finnegan, founder of the Ocean Mist beach bar, the half-dozen cottages are arrayed along the Misquamicut shoreline
and can accommodate two to eight people, depending on the unit. All of the cottages are connected by boardwalks and walkways, says property manager Emily King, so groups traveling together “don’t have to hike down the street — everyone is right there.” Some of the cottages are open year-round, others are seasonal. All have TVs and Wifi, and all are a short walk from the Ocean Mist, where cottage guests can enjoy live music and the beach bar’s excellent daily breakfast,
or get a free pizza from Finnegan’s Matunuck Pizza Pie Co. across the street. “You have a lot around you,” says Emily, who estimates that about half of her guests stay because they want to attend a show at the Ocean Mist (ask about discounted or complimentary tickets), while the rest just come down for a beach getaway. Offseason rates at the Point Break Cottages go into effect on October 1, with prices starting as low as $125 per night. PointBreakCottages.com.
Luxury Lodgings
Westerly’s Ocean House is the pinnacle of luxury lodging in Rhode Island; in fact, this exquisite reimagining of the classic grand New England beach resort consistently ranks among the top hotels in the world. The hotel is an icon of Victorian elegance with wide porches wrapped around the bright yellow-and-white exterior of the main building, which sits behind the sand dunes of Watch Hill. Guest rooms match the early 20th century elegance of the resort, with refined furnishings and cheerful coastal colors; the grand deluxe rooms have private oceanfront terraces and marble baths with soaking tubs. OceanHouseRI.com. Dining options range from informal lunches on the veranda and the oceanside Dune Cottage to multi-course dinners at the AAA 5-Diamond Coast restaurant where you’ll want to dress your best to match the elegant atmosphere. The hotel’s Oh! Spa is a destination unto itself, with 15,000 square feet of indoor space given over to treatment rooms, a pool, fitness center, salon, and classrooms for yoga and other movement sessions. Signature services include couples’ massages in a private suite with a hydrotherapy tub and beach-stone shower. The resort has an extensive calendar of events from art clinics to lobster bakes and boat cruises, and when it’s time to explore, you can borrow one of the resort’s Mercedes-Benz convertibles and hit the road. The Ocean House’s popularity makes deals hard to come by, but room rates do drop off from summer highs in the fall. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, the nearby Watch Hill Inn, a sister property, offers a 15 percent discount for September and October stays; the hotel has just 21 suites, offers in-room dining and spa services, and affords guests access to all of the amenities at the Ocean House. When Helena Silva was pregnant with her first-born, a search for a non-toxic, eco-friendly diaper bag lead only to products made from PVC. Disheartened, Helena sought an alternative. Having grown up in Portugal and around cork, she began to consider the material mostly known for wine stoppers and bulletin boards for totes and more. “I was familiar with cork and knew of its amazing properties” begins Helena, which include being naturally flame retardant, water repellant, allergy-friendly, lightweight, and renewable. “Only the bark of the tree gets extracted and then it regenerates making it one of the most sustainable natural materials.” Today, under the Bent & Bree brand, Helena has founded a luxury line of handbags and accessories all handcrafted with genuine cork.

BRIDAL PARTIES
Director of Local Content & Executive Producer at The Rhode Show My style is classic with a trend forward edge. Think Jackie O. meets J.Lo – I think I’m trying to make that a thing. My look changes a bit depending on the season. A great pair of jeans is always the best, but in the warmer months I gravitate toward fun, brightly colored dresses. One item that I wear mostly everyday would be a pair of statement earrings. I feel they complete an outfit. My go-to choice is a pair of hoops. Maybe I’m taking the J.Lo thing too far, but I feel they make you instantly cooler. When I dress for television, I wear more form-fitting clothes, which is not my comfort zone, but anything loose or baggy on TV can read as frumpy or make you look like you put on extra pounds. I recently wore a wicked cute jumpsuit, which is adorable in real life, but on camera I looked like a blob. Lesson learned. I can find a piece of clothing I like almost anywhere, but more often than not I am a bargain hunter. I love searching the racks at Wrentham Outlets and TJ Maxx because you can find high-end pieces for low-end prices. I splurge on occasion for classic pieces such as a great blazer or something fabulous. I try to shop locally when I can, as well as to find pieces that are special or know will be unique. Everyday is different at work and I’m constantly meeting new people and learning about places. I love that no matter where you are in Rhode Island, you are never far from the ocean. Being able to sit by the water with a little breeze and relax is my absolute favorite thing to do. I went to Roger Williams and have been obsessed with the state ever since. The dining scene is unparalleled and there are always up and coming shopping areas that I love to explore!

Sailor’s Delight A Wickford boathouse gets an all-season transformation

Natural wood beams are at once modest and modern in the boathouse
Chris Bourget enjoys cooking, gathering, gardening, and spending time with kind, open-hearted people. She also loves Rhode Island and the buy local movement. Soon after retiring from years as a retail exec, Chris sought an energizing challenge and opened a gifts and specialty foods store. She named this endeavor The Captain’s Table as a loving tribute to her husband Tony for the beautiful piece of furniture he built to accommodate the couple’s blended family. “He was adamant that we have dinner together every night, no matter how late, and that anyone was welcome at the table. We made many memories around that table,” says Chris.
Not far from the shop, Chris lives in Wickford in a house that she and Tony spotted when looking to retire. “We wanted a place near the water and the marina,” says Chris, recalling being taken with the property at first-sight. The house had a water view, was within walking distance to the village and marina, a post-and-beam boathouse, and, most importantly, boasted a dining room big enough to fit the table. Soon after taking ownership,

GET RHODY STYLE The Captain’s Table’s Chris Bourget offers tips on bringing an Ocean State of mind to any setting. BE INSPIRED “This coastal state offers so much inspiration. Newport grandeur, kitchy coastal beach cottages, historic homes, nature trails, farms, and fishing. Take it in and intuitively feel what makes you happy,” says Chris. REFLECT SURROUNDINGS At home and at the shop, Chris seeks items that are coastal without being over-the-top nautical, advising, “Color, texture, function, and motif can have just nod to a style, or be in your face obvious.” Chris prefers “the nod.”

er. “The repeated use of a calm tonal palette lends a cohesive relaxed vibe, and the use of natural materials and texture gives the serene feeling that complements the ocean view.” Chris’ favorite place to sit and enjoy the view is with her Wheaton Terrier Phoebe on a slipcover couch, purchased extra-deep for Tony’s height. About her location she muses, “I love the eclectic feel and how close everything is. Sailors, fishermen, artists, chefs, scholars… small businesses, farmers markets, galleries, restaurants, theater, beaches. The amazing history, and water, water everywhere! I feel like I am living a vacation every day, I am so very fortunate.”

Tony added a wraparound deck. Wanting to bring the seaside in, DiStefano Brothers Construction of South Kingstown was called and Eric Perez, project manager, began by completing areas in the main house, followed by transforming the boathouse to accommodate guests. The addition of a second level complete with large windowed dormers, a deck, and exterior stairway allowed designer Marisa Navakauskas and Chris to bring the outdoor feeling indoors with furnishings. Chris has decorated rooms to be warm and welcoming, accented with artwork from travels, gifts, and photographs of Tony on his boats. Interiors start with a natural palette but Chris states that with the cove and island outside nearly every window, simply framing the setting is a no-brain-
SHOP LOCAL “All the stores in Wickford Village and North Kingstown offer special, unique items and are owned and managed by people who are passionate about their shops, customers, and community. “So much of my decor was sourced less than a couple of miles from my house,” says Chris.

By the Sea Misquamicut’s Gino’s By the Beach serves up Rhode Island classic beach fare dining room tables are well-spaced. Stylish bar seating is also available. Gino’s has air conditioning, which is a luxury at beachside restaurants. For additional seating, there’s a large outdoor deck, perfect for autumn al fresco dining. Looking over the cocktail list, I was surprised to see how pricey they were, until I ordered one and saw how big it was. I went with the Bonfire Margarita – Jose Cuervo Tequila, jalapeño, lime, mango, and pineapple juices. The beer list has one local beer on tap, Grey Sail’s Captain’s Daughter. If you’re going to have one local beer on tap, that’s a great choice. Gino’s is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was there during lunch with my mom and a school friend. The menus aren’t extensive, but they include everything a
beachside place should offer. At lunch, the menu included chowder, lobster bisque, fried calamari, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and salads. As a starter, the fried calamari was flavorful and had texture – a nice combination of rings and tentacles. It was served with hot peppers and a side of marinara sauce. Since the restaurant was in such close proximity to the beach, it was almost imperative that someone ordered the lobster roll, so I went for it. They serve the lobster rolls cold or warm with melted butter, and I picked the latter. The lobster meat was served on a delicious, grilled New England-style bun, and it was all meat (no pesky vegetables thrown in). All of the burgers and sandwiches were served with sides of fries. The fries were plentiful and piping hot. My mother

Fall is the perfect time to discover Southern Rhode Island’s beaches and beachside cuisine. The ocean water is warmer, and the tourists have all gone home. On the weekdays, you don’t have to deal with the kids or the teachers who are back in school. The seaside restaurants that are bustling midsummer have seen their crowds thin out. So, if you find yourself in Misquamicut and feel like a bite to eat or a cocktail, Gino’s By the Beach is now open. Gino’s is located on Atlantic Avenue, just feet away from the state beach. If you look closely, you can make out a view of the ocean in the distance. The owners completely renovated the space, making it brighter with clean lines and a beachy vibe. Large windows let in the sunlight along a row of comfortable booths, and the

ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with pesto, melted provolone, and sliced tomato, all served on a brioche bun. My friend is a vegetarian, so she was thrilled to find they had the Beyond Burger on the menu. If you aren’t familiar with the Beyond Burger, it’s a meatless, plant based burger that looks like, cooks like, and satisfies like meat. She had it prepared medium-well and said it tasted better than what she’s had in the past. Since they grilled it, it had that charred, smoky flavor that you get right off the barbeque. The sandwich came topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and my friend added avocado for $1 more. We were full after our meals, but managed to make room for dessert. We split a small piece of key lime pie that was tasty, sprinkled with toasted coconut on top. The three of us polished it off and rushed back

LUNCH & DINNER
BRUNCH 9AM TO 2PM ON SUNDAYS
“A diner is like a best friend; it’s always here for you,” Mark Eldridge, owner of the South County trio of diners called Meld gie’s, explains. In 2010, Mark was worn out from his work as a CFO in the corporate world. His best friend suggested Mark buy the River’s Edge Café, a longstanding diner on Main Street in Wakefield that had just gone up for sale. With no food service background, Mark did a deep dive into the business with the café’s owner. That crash course made the transition between the two seamless. Two years later, he did the same with the Bonnet Shores location. Location three, on Point Judith in Narragansett, which Mark purchased in 2015, was not as simple. “We opened after Hurricane Sandy,” he says with a rueful laugh. “We made zero sales the first two days.” In a testament to Rhode Island’s affinity to the humble diner, the restaurant was profitable by its second year. Now it’s his fastest growing location. “Once the community realized we were there, they showed up,” he said. The Meldgie’s menu includes diner staples like eggs, waffles, and French toast, as well as healthier options like egg white omelets

and salads. Each location features their own daily specials, conjured by the cooks with input from the wait staff. The specials focus on seasonal treats, like peaches in the summer and pumpkins in the fall. “Tastes change and you have to adapt to meet that while not alienating your core customers,” he explains. To keep up, they redo the menu every two years to keep things fresh, but only change 10 percent. “I don’t want to lose my regulars. My business is reliant on them.” While the specials lean towards the decadent, the regular menu is “pretty old school,” featuring home-style comforts, like Johnnycakes and biscuits with sausage gravy. Marks credits the success of the three locations to his staff, most of whom have been part of the Meldgie’s family for as long the diners have been in business. “Our River Café cashier recently retired at 82,” he says. “She was here when the original opened in 1986.” “Coming to Meldgie’s is like going to your family’s house,” he continues. “We’re the tentacles that keep the community together.” Point Judith, Bonnet Shores, Wakefield, Meldgies.com.- Karen Greco

KAI BAR Kai Bar is the rare tiki bar that lacks outdoor seating, but it more than makes up for it in ambiance and the quality of their drinks, each handcrafted by owner Jason Kindness and his bar staff. Their logo is a tiki idol, so you know they’re serious about their tropical drinks – so much so that Kai Bar hosts monthly mixology classes. Most authentic tropical drink: The Singapore Sling, a gin (not rum) drink that’s nonetheless a tiki classic, shaken with cherry brandy, Benedictine, and fresh citrus juice. Most interesting drink: The Wolf of Main Street, a mix of aged rum, coconut milk, mint and a dash of miso. The perfect pair: Build-your-own poke bowl on a base of rice or quinoa, adding protein (tuna, shrimp, chicken, or tofu), sauces like soy ginger or ponzu, and a choice of three veggie, fruit, or almond toppings. East Greenwich, KaiBarEG.com.

HARBOR LIGHTS You don’t have to go to the Caribbean to find a bar serving poolside rum drinks: just set your GPS for the Harbor Lights country club and marina off Warwick Neck Avenue, where you can sip tiki drinks poolside by a fire pit, or under the shelter of the bar while marinating in the views of Narragansett Bay. Most authentic tropical drink: West Bay Mai Tai made with Bacardi white rum and Cointreau liqueur. Most interesting cocktail: Frozen mudslides with the option of top or bottom “bumps”: banana, coconut, amaretto, vanilla, or a shot of your preferred spirit. The perfect pair: A toss-up between the Tiki Truck’s blackened fish tacos with chipotle aioli or the “Tot-Chos” – tater tots lavished with sour cream, pico de gallo, and bacon. First and foremost, Flip Side is a pinball arcade. Machines line the walls, and their clatter echoes all night long. Mark Carvey found his first pinball machine on Craigslist in 2012, but his collection quickly grew. “One turns into two, and two turns into four,” says Mark. “And then, all of a sudden, you’ve got a warehouse full of them.” Mark’s specialty is design lighting, and he co-owns The Carvey Group with his wife Dana. But possessing nearly 50 pinball machines made an arcade-bar seem
like a practical idea. Mark didn’t have any service industry experience, but Dana had worked extensively in bars and restaurants. “I’ve been everything from a dishwasher to a front-of-house manager,” he says. “I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I can put a bar together.” Three years ago, Flip Side was born in downtown Westerly. Flip Side is a really nice bar, and it’s well stocked. The craft beer menu represents breweries across New England, including Buttonwoods Brewery in Cranston and Grey

Candy Trays • Salt Water Taffy • Wide Assortment of Chocolate Assorted Chocolates • Buttercrunch • Turtles • Gourmet Truffles Sail Brewing , which is headquartered just down the street. They also have a list of tempting signature cocktails, such as the Battlecry Painkiller (using Sons of Liberty Battlecry Whiskey) and the Dark & Stormier (with Thomas Tew Rum and Farmer Willie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer) all made locally. “To me, pinball has always been associated with playing at the bar,” says Mark. “They were usually not-great machines. They worked enough to have fun on. There’s always a better way to do the pinball side of things – and it’s the same way with beer. It doesn’t have to be a dive bar.” Part of their inspiration came from North Star Pinball Bar in Montreal, which is operated by friends of the Carveys. “When we saw how they put their space together,” says Dana, “we were like, ‘This is what we’re talking about!’ Cool LED lights. Nice machines. It’s fantastic to see someone you’re so close to do it, and do it right. And we were like, ‘Now we’re going to do it.” The Carveys also have a nice relationship with their Westerly neighbors, as well as friends and peers in southeastern Connecticut. The staff at Grey Sail helped them refine their tap system, and they have shared pinball machines with other venues. To develop their wine profile, they consulted with Wine Brothers in Pawtucket, and a friend helps select their beers. Not surprisingly, Flip Side attracts an eclectic crowd. “I wish we could pigeonhole it,” says Mark. “We get the craft beer guy. We get the pinball guy, who’s not here to drink beer at all. And we get everything between.” “It’s really fun when you get four people on one machine,” says Dana. “Grandma’s talking about how she used to play in Misquamicut, and the grandkids are like, ‘What? You were a pinball nerd?’ And they get excited, because they have that nostalgic feeling.”
