The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well at Animal Rescue Rhode Island

A PAWSITIVE INFLUENCE Peace Dale’s Animal Rescue Rhode Island goes above and beyond for its furry friends Animal Rescue Rhode Island (ARRI) has humble roots. In 1938, it started as a band of passionate volunteers operating out of a barn, determined to save stray, abandoned, and abused animals in their community. It has since expanded into a full-sized facility with staff, and has been rescuing dogs, cats, and small animals – like guinea pigs and rabbits – for over 80 years. “We do everything we can to make adoptions last,” says Executive Director Michele Vidmar. This starts with providing a bright, airy space with lots of room for the animals, making them both happier and more social. According to Vidmar, about 500 pets were adopted out last year. However, “It doesn’t end when you walk out the door,” she says. ARRI is not just dedicated to animal care and rescue, but also to education, support, and community outreach. The shelter hosts fundraising events like a Puppy Dog Fashion Show, an annual Jubilee, and a Bark on

the Beach charity dog walk (October 13), in addition to a speaker series covering topics like pet nutrition and CPR, a community pet food pantry, classes on responsible pet ownership, Bark & Ride rescue and transport service, and plenty of opportunities to volunteer. “Support comes from all different directions,” says Vidmar. “It’s really heartwarming.” Volunteers, from students to retirees, walk dogs, answer phones, clean cages, and maintain the grounds. Kids will even dedicate their lemonade stands or birthday parties to benefit the shelter. Despite all that they already do, Vidmar reveals that there is even more in the pipeline for ARRI, like a comfort dog program for local schools, rehab centers, and elderly care facilities. This month, they will host a speaker on pet trusts on September 23 and their Paws to Party fundraising event at the Providence Marriott Aqua Poolside Lounge on September 27. Heavy Metal Timothy Michael Hetland makes sculptures into Skunteundfish brand of a wind turbine company, started his brand Skunteundfish, after a fall destroyed his knee and boredom consumed the 18-month recovery. “I exploded with ideas,” he recalls. Thus, he began making the one-of-a-kind sculptures that, within a year, were being featured in nine galleries and met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. “People were digging my slight weirdness,” Hetland says with a laugh. Hetland works with a combination of metals and alloys like stainless steel, copper,

and brass, in addition to stone, crystal, and unique wood. “I have a deep connection to working with metals that are not easily workable and enjoy the difficult process of taming them into a shape and form that will be noticed and hopefully admired,” he says. “In short, I like the challenge.” That challenge can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks – including several restless nights – for smaller pieces, and a matter of months for larger builds. However, Hetland, a self-described calm and mellow guy, is continuously changing and raising the bar for himself. “My first thought is for someone to appreciate

After spending a month crafting a 10-foot bird out of metal, Timothy Michael Hetland found he “had no feeling for it, no groove,” and dismantled it to start a bigger, 13-foot mechanical sculpture, hopefully to be installed in a Middletown park. “I’m an impulse builder and go with the flow with whatever comes to me in ideas,” he explains. “I was given an extremely creative mind and strong hands, which make a powerful tool in the art world.” Three years ago, Hetland, former owner

the ‘old soul’ in me,” Hetland says. “I love to create something that seems very ancient and spiritual, of times long ago – something that will stand out and be kindly talked about and admired for many decades.” This old world essence can be traced to Hetland’s third-generation Norwegian roots; it can be seen in the natural elements and patina of his pieces. Ready to Rock Hands That Rock Tribute Band Festival combines music and massage to support local community music programs

When Darcy Lynch began giving massages at music festivals six years ago, and donating a portion of her proceeds to charity, she knew she wanted to leverage her business to make it more charitable. Her idea? To bring the magic of music to underserved communities around the world. On September 15, Lynch will bring that magic to her local South County community, hosting the First Annual Hands That Rock Tribute Band Festival at the Bonnet Shores Beach Club in Narragansett with the help of her nonprofit, Hands That Rock (HTR), which provides massage therapy at music festivals to raise money for music education. The event will raise funds needed to support music scholarships for Narragansett and South Kingstown school district students.

Taking the stage at the festival will be tribute bands Chicago Total Access (Chicago), Merchants of Cool (Foreigner), and Barefoot Rebel (Lynyrd Skynyrd). In addition to the stunning live performances, the festival will also feature a silent auction where they’ll be selling collectors-grade signed instruments from world-renowned artists and bands like Journey, Peter Frampton, Johnny Cash, Green Day, Steely Dan, and more. A music-lover’s dream, the proceeds from sold items will also benefit music scholarships for students. Bidding for larger auction items begins before the event on HTR’s website. Rounding off the festivities will be light beach fare, open bar, and instrument donation drive. Lynch expresses that she is “very excited to be hosting this important program

supporting music scholarships [in] Rhode Island.” Since HTR’s inception in 2012, they’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars for student music programs by providing chair massage services for audiences at music events. Their undertaking has surely been successful in following their mission, Lynch adding that “we wanted to create an event model that can be easily repeated in towns and cities across America. Our Tribute Band Festival is that vehicle and we believe this will be very successful.” Tickets to the 21+ event are $35 and available for purchase online through HTR’s website. Inspired Images Poetry inspires art at the Wickford Art Association’s Sixth Annual Poetry & Art Show

Visitors will be able to appreciate the interplay of poetry and art at Wickford Art Association’s 6th Annual Poetry & Art Show

With a unique blend of art and poetry and a mission to educate, encourage, and inspire, Wickford Art Association’s (WAA) sixth annual Poetry & Art Show is sure to captivate the eyes of its attendees. This year, the show features an exciting reversal to the exhibit process. Forty-two entries were selected from a record combined 392 poetry and art submissions. The poems, chosen by Kim Baker, were then assigned to the artists, selected by Robin Beckwith, Cynthia DiDonato, and John Pitocco, who were instructed to create original works of art inspired by the poems, which were then assembled into a book. Gallery Director Judy Salvadore shares that WAA is “thrilled [to announce] that the Poets House in New York City has accepted the Poetry & Art book into its library.” The library houses one of the most comprehensive collections of

poetry in the United States, so the accomplishment, she says, “is very meaningful for our accepted poets.” The book will also be donated to local libraries for public viewing. The show’s opening reception will be held on September 14, where the paired poets and artists will finally meet, alongside poetry readings and related events. The exhibit will run free and open to the public through October 14. Though WAA is a nonprofit, Salvadore says that “donations and gifts-in-kind are always welcome and will be used to support [WAA’s] mission.” Each year, they offer more than 50 art classes, upwards of a dozen art exhibits, community events, the annual Wickford Arts Festival, and more. Any donations are used to keep these programs and services available to the community, Salvadore explains. To WAA, the Poetry & Art Show isn’t just a

challenge to the featured artists and poets. It’s a large undertaking requiring many volunteers. Salvadore notes, “We have a great committee that works all year long,” and she is grateful to all that help make the show possible: those overseeing the event, the art and poetry jurors, book designers and proofreaders, volunteer organizers, video producers and photographers, event administrators, and more. She also thanks the North Kingstown Arts Council for supporting the event with a grant for the second year. According to Salvadore, WAA hopes “to offer a moving and inspiring experience to both the participating poets and artists, and to the public.” She recommends guests visit the exhibit more than once to fully absorb the show and its remarkable features. Ambrose Burnside, a miniature pony, and a man dressed in Marilyn Monroe’s dress from Some Like It Hot walk into a cemetery. That’s not a punchline, just part of the wackiness of Scofflaws, a reality TV hopeful poking fun at ridiculous laws and regulations being developed in Rhode Island by a motley crew of actors, history buffs, and pop culture fans. Cranston resident Paul Deion and his son, Kurt, came up with the idea of a show centered on “breaking [obscure] laws in the craziest way possible” back in 2011, when Kurt was still a sophomore at Cranston East High School. The father-son partner-

ship is perfect for the show: a natural comedian, the elder Deion is a former buyer and seller of vintage toys and co-founded Rhode Island’s first comic book convention; straight man Kurt is currently studying for his master’s degree in history at UMass Boston and has appeared on C-SPAN to discuss his (now completed) quest to visit the gravesite of every past American president and vice president. The promotional “sizzle reel,” filmed in June at locations around Rhode Island, stemmed from an encounter the Deions had while visiting Swan Point Cemetery in Providence. “We were at the gravesite of H.P.

Lovecraft when a security guard pulled up and told us we couldn’t take photos of the grave unless we were blood relatives of the deceased,” recalled Deion. Thus was born the idea of staging a “Burnside Family Reunion” at the cemetery to comply with the rule. Deion admits that one regulation they didn’t comply with was getting a permit to shoot the sizzle reel in a peaceful Woonsocket cemetery standing in for the well-patrolled Swan Point — least of all with a pair of live horses, a golf-cart-riding “security officer,” and actors wearing costumes not exactly befitting a funeral ceremony. “We weren’t allowed to film there, but hey, we’re scofflaws,” he says with a laugh. The Rhode Island connection is strong with Scofflaws: Cranston-born actor Scott LaRose, one of the stars of the show, connected the Deions with legendary Hollywood TV producer and fellow Cranston native Vin Di Bona, who created Battle of the Network Stars in the 1970s — often considered the first reality TV show — as well as the long-running America’s Funniest Home Videos. “He told us it’s a funny concept, it could be successful, and I’m on your side,” recalls Deion from a meeting with the producer in California. Di Bona subsequently wrote a $4,000 check to fund the sizzle reel, which the Deions are hoping to have in the producer’s hands by the end of the summer. If he likes what he sees, Di Bona could then pitch the show to network and cable TV channels. If it makes it on the air, Scofflaws will have no shortage of material. In landlocked Kansas, for example, it’s illegal to fish for a whale out of a moving vehicle; Florida bizarrely bans sexual relations with porcupines; and a Connecticut law stipulates that farmers cannot call their cucumbers “pickles” unless the little gherkins bounce when dropped. “This country is chock full of silly laws, rules, and policies,” says Deion. –Bob Curley

It’s no surprise the Ocean State is home to a globally recognized institution for marine-related research, education, outreach, and exploration: URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO). In July, however, it earned yet another notch in its belt. The East Coast Oceanographic Consortium, led by URI’s GSO (alongside Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, UNH’s School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, and 13 associate members), was selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to operate a brand-new research ship. The $100 million vessel, to be designed by Glosten Associates and assembled in Louisiana, will port at URI’s Narragansett Bay campus in 2021. “No doubt the new vessel will help researchers, educators, students, and the public gain a richer understanding of our planet and stimulate exploration that will lead to discoveries we can’t yet imagine,” said URI President David Dooley in a recent announcement. The ship will be a thing to behold: 199 feet long, 41 feet wide, with state-of-theart technology and upgraded science labs. It will be manned by a member 13

401-944-4440 crew and up to 16 scientists, and used to track ocean currents and fish migration, conduct seafloor surveys in earthquake-prone regions, assist the conservation of marine life in the deep ocean, and offer educational opportunities to students and teachers. The ship will replace URI’s R/V Endeavor, which has been operating for over 40 years; during its lifetime, it traveled over one million nautical miles and conducted more than 600 research expeditions. “This is tremendous news for the Consortium members, URI, and the state of Rhode Island,” enthused Bruce Corliss, Dean of GSO, in URI Today. He hopes the new ship will continue the Endeavor’s legacy of acting as both a “floating laboratory and classroom […] [that has] raised URI and GSO’s profile internationally.” It will be one of three such research vessels in the United States, the other run by Oregon State University and a third to be determined. Here in South County, September is the perfect time to seek open sky. The dog days have dwindled, and chilly autumn winds arenâ€™t yet blustering. Insects retreat, and leaves start to color. This is the moment for fresh air and campfires, and southern Rhode Island is a rejuvenating destination for both. Once you abandon the highways and ease your car down curving rural roads, you find countryside checkered with trees and pasture. the leafy woods. Spend enough time in the forest, and you may want to pitch a tent and spend the night beneath glittering stars. To ease you into these bucolic surroundings, here is a survey of trails and campgrounds in South County. Keep in mind, thereâ€™s a surprising amount of land out there, and lots of hidden nooks and crannies. But if youâ€™re looking for a few hours of tromping around, these are a good place to start.

Sure, there are also lots of places for motorized recreation, and if you own the right equipment, South County has its share of RV parks and ATV routes. But if you prefer quiet strolls and secluded spots to set up a tent, here is a survey of old-school trails and campgrounds. Burlingame State Campground Burlingame State Campground

The Cozy Camper Whispering Pines is gentle on the outdoorsman. For families – and people who like a little comfort with their camping – this homey campground offers well-appointed tent sites near fully equipped restrooms and showers. The cabins have refrigerators, running water, and air conditioning. There’s a snack bar and volleyball court, and if you absolutely have to watch some Netflix, there’s free WiFi as well. The Active Camper Burlingame State Park is one of Rhode Island’s greatest playgrounds, where you can swim, fish, hike, and mountain bike – all in the same day, if you feel like it – and retire to your tent for some hot dogs and s’mores. This state park boasts 3,000 acres and the sizable Watchaug Pond, a favorite for boaters and anglers. Burlingame State Campground boasts a similar grandeur: there are over 700 tent sites, as well as 20 rustic cabins. (By “rustic,” we mean no utilities, and campers have to bring their own bedding). Such a gigantic estate often means large groups and some noise, but you can almost always find a vacant spot, even in high season. Charlestown, RIParks.com

The Seaside Camper They don’t call it Fishermen’s Memorial State Park and Campground for nothing; this expansive site is located in coastal Galilee, and no matter which direction you walk, you’re bound to hit a major body of water. Most of the regulars know Fishermen’s as a village of campers and RVs, and there are scores of sites to park and hook up. But there is also a cluster of tent sites, and traditional campers can enjoy the same amenities as their motorized neighbors: a playground, a viewing platform, and easy access to beaches, seafood restaurants, and the Point Judith Lighthouse. Ambitious backpackers are also just a mile away from the Block Island ferry dock. Today, this 41-acre dollop of land is given over to picnickers, boaters, and people pitching tents, thanks to the town of Jamestown, which owns and maintains the Fort Getty Campground. TRAILS The Cross-Country Cyclist Smooth, gentle, and scenic, the William C. O’Neill Bike Path is one of the hidden treasures of South County. This path isn’t as well known as the East Bay Bike Path or Washington Secondary Trail – and that’s a good thing. This luxurious route cuts through seven miles of farms and forest, connecting the University of Rhode Island campus in West Kingston to the western suburbs of Narragansett, where a trailhead stands only a short ride from the Town Beach. Don’t let the name fool you: the “bike path” is really a multi-use trail, and visitors can walk, jog, or skate to their heart’s content. Plus, 14 miles (there and back) make a good distance for any training athlete. SouthCountyBikePath.org

The Birder As the name suggests, the Lathrop Audubon Wildlife Refuge will appeal mostly to wildlife enthusiasts. These quiet wetlands have their charms, especially when it’s cool enough for the gnats and mosquitoes to vanish. But for birders, these are 86 acres of ornithological ecstasy. Lathrop is home to willets, snowy egrets, yellow warblers, and the Baltimore oriole, and there’s plenty else to see through a pair of binoculars. The trail is only a mile long and an easy walk, so you can focus on the avian, thanks to the RI Audubon Society. Westerly, ASRI.org The Bushwhacker Not many places in Rhode Island can qualify as a “valley,” and certainly none as scenic as Ell Pond Preserve. Located so far west that it’s practically in Connecticut, the preserve is a rare glimpse of near-wilderness. The “kettle hole” pond is ringed with sloped banks and dense trees, and on a misty morning, Ell can feel as isolated as an Alaskan fjord. The ground can be slippery, especially on the many rocky parts, but for many hikers, these setbacks are a small price to pay for a slice of sylvan serenity. Hopkinton, ExploreRI.org

The Challenge-Seeker Even by Rhode Island standards, Mount Tom Trail doesn’t really scale a mountain, yet this six-mile loop is a dynamic promenade through the Arcadia Management Area. Arcadia is our state’s largest recreational plot, and Mount Tom is a beautiful sample of those 14,000 acres: there are rolling hills, massive boulders, and an elegant bridge over a glassy brook, along with scattered overlooks. The Explorer Ninigret Park is a sprawling park on the southern coast, most famous as the setting for the Frosty Drew Nature Center and Observatory. But there’s also a pond (with beach and lifeguards), playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis and basketball courts, and a maze of bike paths that meander through the wilderness area. You could spend an entire day exploring this 227-acre landscape. Ninigret also has a storied past: until the 1970s, it was home to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station of Charlestown, and the blistered remains of the old airfield can still be seen today. The Beachcomber South County has so much walkable coastline, you could spend an entire summer roaming its shores, never stepping foot in the woods. But Black Point Trail is a distinctive two-mile trail, skirting the rocky fringes of Narragansett. You’ll find the eerie ruins of a stone building, windswept crags, and lots of light woods. You can walk your dog here, and if you’re willing to tough out the weather, you can visit any time of year, even the middle of winter. The lagoon is roughly triangular, and a narrow strip of land cuts Trustom off from the ocean. All around the water lie 787 acres of protected forest and marshland. This national wildlife refuge is packed with fauna – 300 bird species, 40 mammal species, and 20 reptile and amphibian species. The Casual Hiker Rhode Island is healthily veined with rivers and streams, but Queen’s River Nature Preserve is one of its more obscure waterways. This narrow ribbon is only 10 miles long, its current hedged in by a dam. The twomile Queen’s River trail is a nice excursion through rural Exeter, and hikers can enjoy views of the river as well as quiet woods and the centuries-old stones of a small cemetery. But the preserve is massive, encompassing 841 acres of protected forest and swamp, owned and maintained by The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island. The topography is a diverse mix of forest and field, giant boulders and peaceful waters. The trail is usually quiet and easy on beginners. Janelle Feigley always knew she’d own a store. While some twelve-year-olds are daydreaming about their crush du jour, she was working on the first draft of a business plan for a clothing boutique. Today she is the owner of just that, a shop in Wickford specializing in bohemian style clothing (attention: Free People fans) that’s also her own working painting studio, resulting in a mix of clothing and canvas definitely worth talking about.

How did you come up with the name Gossip? After getting married, my husband Will and I took a trip out West to visit national and state parks. When we were at Arches National Park in Utah we came across a rock formation known as the Three Gossips. My husband knew I’d been thinking about shop names and said, “Janelle, that’s it!” and that’s how the name Gossip came to be.

Have you always worked in retail? I actually worked in corporate environments at Kraft Foods and then Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, but I was constantly revising my business plan. All along those jobs were a means to an end and by the time I left Pfizer I had money saved to start my business and my vendors all lined up! Your shop is known for helping people find their true style. Any simple tips to share? Celebrate who you are and dress for your personality. You want pieces that you feel good in and that work for your lifestyle. I dress to celebrate myself every day and what I wear is indicative of my mood. Most days you’ll find me with a “California Dreaming” kind of look which [to me] means real hair, low make-up, lots of denim, and layered jewelry. That being said I also love getting dressed up. For women getting ready for a special event I always suggest a beautiful nude or gold heel to elongate the leg, and for men, a nice dress shoe that matches their belt.

A Wickford artist puts a spirited spin on coastal cottage decor

Wickford homeowner Nancy Rafi is someone who acts locally and decorates globally. As an activist and artist, she’s known in many circles for passions both civic and creative. Rafi has organized everything from the New England Quahog Festival and Sea Creature Parade to raise funds to renovate her town’s beach playground to founding the Rhode Island Women’s March to having her richly decorated home receive international recognition. “I used to be a real neutral kind of person, but now I’m attracted to deep jewel tones and washed out and faded

blues,” she says, describing the aesthetic of the waterside home she shares with her husband of 21 years, Brian Hennessey, and their tiger cat Kashmir. Originally a fisherman’s cottage built in 1958, the house has morphed into the three-bedroom ranch in which the couple has resided for over eight years.

room designs begin with a blank canvas – walls throughout the home are painted a soft white to allow furnishings to stand out. Describing her style as Eclectic Boho-meets-Grandma’s Attic, she cites accents such as antique furniture reclaimed with coats of paint and pattern, global textiles like Persian rugs and kantha quilts, and piles of pillows and books as go-to items. “I have a tendency to layer things because there’s something really wonderful about peeling them back and discovering the opulence of embroidered fabrics or running your hand over chippy layers of paint,” she

says, noting a preference for tactility. “I love things that are worn and loved, that don’t have that ‘it’s new, don’t sit on it’ feel.” Nearly everything in Rafi’s home has a unique story, as many furnishings are handmade or altered by herself or someone local. A lampshade she constructed using old 35mm slides is her favorite project, noting that when lit it resembles stained glass, but up-close is actually many small photographs. Rafi likes to display local art, and in addition to shopping around her home at places like The Wickford Collection and YES! Gallery, she heads to Sea Rose Cottage in Bristol for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and across the state line to Mystic,

Rockin’ Out An occasional climber relearns the basics at Central Rock Gym

I’m not very good at knots. Everything else about climbing, I can figure out: find handholds, hug the rock, “solve problems,” and lean comfortably into a rappel. I even own a pair of proper, hand-me-down climbing shoes. But after years of occasional scrambles, always with experienced climbers, my knowledge was piecemeal. Belay someone? Maybe. Tie myself into a harness? I wouldn’t know where to start. This is how I found myself in a basic belaying class, taught almost daily at Central Rock

Gym in Warwick. “Belaying” is the fundamental art of holding and tightening a rope, so that a climber never falls more than a few feet. My instructor was Sean McLaughlin, a chipper, good-humored college student from Massachusetts. The class was small – just me, McLaughlin, and the simulated rock face. Step by step, he showed me how to tie a bowline knot, a figure-eight knot, and how to weave the rope through the carabiner and belay device. The movements were familiar, because I’d seen

them done for me a dozen times, but now I was the one holding the rope. “So now you’re going to belay me,” said McLaughlin. “The first time, I’ll just climb straight up. The second time, I’m going to do what we call an unannounced fall.” My dad is a seasoned amateur climber, and he introduced me to the sport when I was a kid. “Roped climbing is safer than playing on a jungle gym,” he often quips. School is Back! GRAB DINNER ON THE GO! on the ground, tightening the line. The climber, high above, needs that rope. Out in the real world, belayers (literally) hold climbers’ lives in their hands. McLaughlin bent his knees. He looked skyward, and he leapt. The move is common among serious mountaineers; they lunge for an outcropping, hoping that their fingers will stick to the rock. But McLaughlin missed – deliberately – and his body fell. I yanked down on the rope, and it locked against the belay device. McLaughlin froze in the air, and his shoes bounced playfully against the wall. “Nice,” he said. The knots were not as cryptic as I’d feared. McLaughlin was thorough, but he reviewed the lesson in the easygoing tone of a friendly neighbor. Basic techniques can be learned in an hour, and the course only costs $14. In a single afternoon, the fledgling climber unlocks mountains of possibility. “Want to do some climbing?” McLaughlin asked. Friends had asked this many times over the years, and the answer was always yes. This time, the ropes weren’t some mysterious technology, but a simple rig that I could theoretically set up myself. I grasped the holds and hauled myself upward. My muscles thrilled at the long-dormant posture, the familiar flex and strain of vertical ascent. Central Rock has a warm and inviting atmosphere, which is hardly the norm for climbing gyms. I spotted no “rock jocks” swaggering through the place, smirking at their lessers, and this makes all the difference. The space is also colossal: 17,000 square feet of climbing terrain, and 100 rope stations to choose from. As I strolled down the patchwork of mats, the walls rose around me like the stone faces of an actual canyon. Climbers stretched on the floor, trading stories about their exploits on the ridge. There was a lot that could be done in a place like this, and nowhere to go but up.

GIANT SQUID The Calamari Festival wraps its tentacles around Narragansett The squid is quite the creature: hundreds of species, millions of years old, glides through the water like a slimy dandelion – and man, does it taste great deep-fried with a little sauce. Calamari is the dark horse of the Rhode Island seafood scene, but the people of Narragansett make plenty of room at the table, thanks to the annual Calamari Festival, a one-afternoon tribute to savoring cephalopods. Like a blast of defensive ink, the festival comes at you fast. You’ll have four hours on a Saturday afternoon to pay your $10 admission, fill a plate (or plastic cup) with crunchy goodness, and stock up on beer at the cash bar before the festival packs up for another 12

months. While you’re there, you can hear live music and chat with the diverse culinary talents of Back 40, Mariner Grille, Parma Ristorante, and a half-dozen other beloved local restaurants. For the guest who’s on the fence about rubbery tendrils, there are plenty of other food vendors as well, from Haven Brothers’ food truck to Swirls & Scoops ice cream. If you’ve ever doubted the quality of Rhode Island calamari, this is your chance to find out why the dish was officially named our “state appetizer” four years ago. Delicious as Ever The new owners of Besos in East Greenwich live up to its tasty reputation orange, and lime, finished with a sugar rim. It looked as beautiful as it tasted. Despite all of the ingredients, it was easy to drink and tasted refreshing on a hot day. Two of my friends sampled the Sangria ($10), one white and one red. With our drinks, the waitress brought out some fabulous rolls with chili oil on the side. They were so good, we asked for more. The lunch menu at Beso’s isn’t expansive, but it does offer variety. We all felt like pizza, so we started with the Three Cheese & Proscuitto Grilled Pizza ($13) from the Grilled Pizza and Small Plates section of the menu. The crust was topped with just the right amount of fig jam, mozzarella, goat cheese, shaved Parmesan, and arugula. I also ordered Fish Tacos ($10). I didn’t read the description closely and was surprised to find the fish to be salmon. I loved the crunchy toppings on my corn tortilla tacos, which included jicama, carrot, and red onion jalapeno slaw. One of my friends tried the Chicken Caesar Wrap ($12) that was served with roasted potatoes (with a tasty aioli) and a crisp, vinegary slaw. Two of my friends were on the hungrier side and ordered from the Pastas and Entrees section

of the menu. One had the Faroe Island Salmon ($16). It was topped with pineapple chutney and served with sautéed spinach and roasted potatoes. The other friend always orders something Italian, so she tried the Baked Rigatoni ($12), and it was served in the cast iron skillet in which it was baked. The tomato sauce was good, but what put it over the top was how cheesy it was, and this was a very rich dish. Keeping the accompaniments light and on the healthy on the side, they paired it with a heaping helping of mixed greens dressed with a light balsamic dressing. Since we still had more school gossip to discuss, we ordered the Chocolate Lava Cake ($10) for dessert. As we sat and waited for the cake, one of my friends remarked that it seemed to be taking a long time and was surprised to learn they were baking the cake to order. This version of Lava Cake was filled with deep chocolate goodness, and when your fork entered, it oozed molten chocolate lava. Well worth the wait.

It has been said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Restaurants come and restaurants go. Because we fear when our favorite restaurant changes ownership, many were concerned when the Martucci Group took over East Greenwich’s beloved Besos Kitchen & Cocktails. So I gathered a group of friends for lunch to see what the fuss was about. Besos is located in the heart of East Greenwich’s Main Street in the historic Elms Building. The structure has been in existence since about 1880, when it was a men-only tavern with a hotel on the top floor. The restaurant mixes the elegant and rustic: shiny, black chandeliers, antique mirrors, and bistro style furniture alongside the barn wood floors and aged wooden touches. The restaurant is known for its wraparound porch, which provides additional dining space and a view of Main Street. As any group of “ladies who lunch” would do, we started with a round of cocktails. I was impressed by the variety on their cocktail menu; the restaurant prides itself on its concoctions, going so far to make its own shrubs and bitters. I ordered a Lotus Eaters Dream ($12) – pisco, amaro, spiced nasturtium hibiscus syrup, blood

Happy Birthday to Nana

When Dianne Mann bought Nana’s Ice Cream in 2006, the little shop had already been scooping cones for over two decades and had long been considered a South County summer tradition. But Mann wanted to try something new and different. “They served just hard ice cream,” she recalls. “But we started with gelato. And it’s been quite a surprise. In the first few years, about 25 percent of our business was gelato. Now it’s exactly fifty-fifty.”

This month, Nana’s celebrates 35 years in business, and she’s doing it in the most delicious way possible: patrons can enjoy free toppings all of September. Toppings are a Nana’s specialty, especially after Mann opened a candy store next door. For six years, fans have combined the 50 flavors of ice cream and gelato with the 25 types of morsels from the Candy Shoppe, a nearly infinite combination of sweetness. Things have changed a lot in Mann’s time.

The business has exploded, of course, but popular tastes have also evolved. “Just over the past couple of years, customers have been requesting dairy-free flavors,” she says. Now Mann has developed six different flavors that are friendly to plant-centric and lactose-intolerant customers. “When I first started, it was just the peanut allergy. I love the Pacific-meets-Atlantic vibe in your store. What influences did you bring in from different places? The West Coast and Hawaii have influenced us to bring healthy choices and good vibes to our customers – but we try to use local products whenever possible. Our cold brew is from The Nitro Cart, our coffee beans come from TLC Roasters, our peanut butter comes from Providence, and our ghee from Stonington. We also use local honey and produce, and lots of other local ingredients, too.

Let’s talk about juice as a way to boost your health. What would you recommend for someone new to juicing? Our juices are all made fresh to order on the spot. We make lots of custom juices to cater to people’s diets, too. Whether it be for detox, post-workout, or a tasty treat, we can make it happen. Tell us about your smoothie bowls. How are they different than smoothies? Smoothie bowls are basically a very thick smoothie that’s similar to soft serve consistency. The bowls get topped with granola and fresh fruit. You eat the bowls with a spoon and they are an awesome treat on a summer day. They are similar to an Acai bowl, but you can choose all different styles for the base. They are very visually appealing and one of the most popular items here. Supplements like Acai, spirulina, and goji berry are such health buzzwords right now – but unless you know what they are, you have no idea. Can you tell us about some of the health benefits? A lot of the add-ons we offer are new to people here in the area. A good portion of the add-ons are considered superfoods, which are nutrient-rich foods considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Acai is a berry from South America and is really popular in Brazil. The energy you get from it is amazing, and it’s really tasty, too. Spirulina is another cool add-on. It’s an algae that is packed with protein and many other benefits. There is actually a facility in Cranston that processes and sells spirulina. Another popular and better known add-on is the plant-based protein powder we use, which is a great alternative for people who would rather not use animal products. We hear Thursday night has a new thing happening. We’re hosting Taco Night on Thursdays from 5:30-8pm. The tacos are vegan and made with jackfruit, which we serve pulled pork style. They’re really good. Most people would think there is meat in them if they tried jackfruit tacos. It’s a fun time, too – we play lots of reggae music and surf videos for everyone. It’s got a real community feel to it and many friends and family stop by.
