FROM SOUTH COUNTY, WITH LOVE Waxing poetic with Doors Open RI We can fall as much in love with places as people – and, if we’re lucky, both at the same time. Rhody Love Notes was devised by the history-tour mavens at Doors Open RI, and all are welcome to submit an affectionate “letter” about a place we hold dear. Each location is pinned on a digital map, where you can read a loving description or anecdote. “Rhody Love Notes seeks to inspire new perspectives on our state,” reads the project’s mission, “and foster belonging, curiosity, and local pride.” Here’s what we might say: “South County, the pearl of our summers, the hearth of our winters, village within villages. May we always lose and find ourselves again in your forests; may your ocean always welcome us with breeze; may your rambling roads and rivers always guide us somewhere new. And in the foggiest times, may our way always be lit, like the waves at the foot of your lighthouses.” Submit your Rhody Love Note at DoorsOpenRI. org/LoveNotes. | by Robert Isenberg

Art Everywhere You can think of the Jamestown Outdoor Arts Experience as a scavenger hunt. Ten different sites are scattered across the island. Locations are tied to major landmarks, like Godena Farm, the Jamestown Museum, and the Jamestown Philomenian Library. But instead of party favors or chests of gold, your scavenger hunt leads you to art. “We have tried to cover the entire island,” says Maureen Coleman, executive director of the Jamestown Arts Center (JAC), which is organizing the event. “You could visit all of [the sites] in one day, or you could spread it all out.” If you’ve never heard of the Outdoor Arts Experience, it’s because this is the first one. The staff at JAC has mulled over the idea of an ambitious public exhibition since its earliest years, but it always stalled out. In 2018, the idea started to get traction; JAC would put together an open-air exhibit to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. “It’s a fairly monumental undertaking,” says Molly Dickinson, who oversees membership and special projects for JAC and serves as project manager for the Art Experience. They put out a national call for artists, and the selection committee received over 100 submissions for installation artwork. Notably, the selection committee wasn’t
14
SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2020
made up of academics or acclaimed local sculptors, but of regular members of the community, and each submission was anonymous. Of the 10 artists selected, six are based in Rhode Island. Each work is original, and none of them existed when they were first proposed. “Every piece is being made specifically for the exhibition,” says Dickinson. “I can’t think of a single one that will simply be picked up and plopped down.” While many works will be avant-garde and challenging to the average viewer, none are overwhelmingly large, and no cranes or special vehicles were required to install them. “I would say that the scale of the installations is modest – a more human scale.” Under normal circumstances, JAC is an epicenter of visual creativity, and students sign up for a wide range of classes with experienced instructors. The pandemic forced the art center to develop online classes instead, and long-planned gallery shows had to go virtual as well. The Outdoor Arts Experience followed suit; organizers had hoped to provide creative opportunities for visitors, as well as artist visits to local schools; the lockdown frustrated those plans for months. At the moment, the only certainty is the series of installations, but Coleman hints at future surprises – opportunities to commit “random acts of art.”
As for the grand tour: Visitors can browse the website for locations and artist biographies. The works are wide-ranging: Ana Flores’ Poetry of the Wild looks like an antique writing desk, and visitors are invited to scribble their thoughts into an attached notebook. Drew Klotz’s Super Nova is an abstract, 15-foot sculpture made of steel and aluminum, which shifts with the wind. Sandy Sorlien’s Marbelle is a rowboat encrusted in marbles. To see the fruits of these labors, you can drive from one location to the next, all of which are ADA accessible. On a sunny day, Coleman recommends riding a bicycle along Jamestown’s bucolic roads and viewing all 10 sites. The Outdoor Arts Experience will continue through October, and JAC staff is grateful for the lucky timing; the grand opening happened to coincide with Phase 2 of Rhode Island’s “reopening,” and the isolated displays are about as socially distanced as an art exhibit gets. Even in our divided times, the experience manages to bring people together. “It strengthens our partnerships,” says Dickinson. “It’s our gift to the community.” OutdoorArtsExperience.org

Your Own Backyard

The South County Tourism Council encourages staycations this summer with its “Find Your Way Back” campaign Imagine a blissful summer getaway, with golden beaches, cute B&Bs, and luxury resorts. Ice cream cone in hand, you could stroll historic streets and peek into novelty shops. You could sit on a patio – a comfortable distance from other tables – and sip a Bloody Mary as you watch the rolling waves and smell the sea breeze. Where is this paradise, and how do you get there? It’s called Rhode Island. And you’re already in it. “One of the most special things about South County is that the region is not overly built up and there is so much open space to explore,” says Faye Pantazopoulos, creative director of the South County Tourism Council. “South County’s outdoor spaces are easy to enjoy while still practicing social distancing, and with the new regulations at the beaches, people can still enjoy the beach while keeping a safe distance from others.” In March, as the pandemic was descending in earnest, the Tourism Council started to develop a new campaign, Find Your Way Back. Louise Bishop, the Council’s president, came up with the phrase, and the team ran with it, developing their website, promotional materials, and a picturesque new video to (literally) drive the idea home. “It implies what we all hope for,” says Pantazopoulos, “a way back to what was normal before the pandemic, a way back to fun, sun, ocean, and vacation – and of course, our hope that visitors find their way back to South County, Rhode Island.” Pantazopoulos easily rattles off the familiar benefits of a South County holiday: 100 miles of coastline, 20 public beaches, and some of the warmest waters in New England. She also mentions a handful of activities that even locals often overlook: going clamming, paddling on the water with Narrow River Kayaks, exploring the ruins of an old lighthouse on Whale Rock Trail, among countless other pastimes and day-trips. Traditionally, the Tourism Council focuses its attention on out-of-staters who travel to Rhode Island to stay in our hotels and savor our food. This year, health concerns and financial hardship
SORhodeIsland.com
Coast Guard House is just one iconic spot in South County that native Rhodies are encouraged to rediscover this summer
have changed the game; fewer travelers are expected to visit, and fewer Rhodies will be able to road trip elsewhere. Pantazopoulos notes that states like New Hampshire and Maine may still have strict guidelines to quell the spread of coronavirus. You may decide to wait on Bar Harbor and the White Mountains, but you can replicate many of those experiences closer by. And that includes hotels. South County overflows with accommodations of all types, and escaping the confines of quarantine doesn’t have to include passport control or time-zones shifts. “Our hotels are going above and beyond to make sure guests feel safe, and they’re beginning to open up with extra precautions,”
says Pantazopoulos. For example, Ocean House has put together a plan called “OH Well,” which includes 24-hour buffers between one room occupancy and the next, Molekule air purifiers in every room, and scattered sanitizer stations. Meanwhile, Margin Street Inn has replaced its morning buffet with breakfast delivery, and afternoon cocktails are packaged in portable containers, allowing guests to sip them in isolated nooks. Adds Pantazopoulos: “A staycation is a great way for Rhode Island residents to get away and explore South County – and to learn to ‘love where you live.’” SouthCountyRI.com

We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it! What it is: Housing bestsellers, classic titles, and children’s collections in a quaint historical site, Books on the Pond supplies an idyllic reading atmosphere to complement the book shopping experience.
What makes it a Rhody Gem? In each building, find book collections in all genres, along with artisan wares and educational games, all curated with care by owner Alexandra Lehmann who keeps both her adult and children readers in mind. Seeking authentic human connection in this literary hub, Lehmann also hosts writing classes and author readings in the red barn, which is decorated with paintings and photography. July brings the return of book events, with spaced-out seating for safety, so check online for the schedule. Meanwhile, the new outdoor reading patio is perfect for social distancing under a trellis, inviting bookish conversation, quality time with dogs, and, of course, reading. Lehmann says, “We consider ourselves lucky because our customers, teachers, and writers are also friends and neighbors.”

The first floor of a Narragansett Colonial gets a clean slate Alan and Kait Yick both worked in NYC and lived in New Jersey, but always pictured making their way back to the Ocean State to raise a family. They made good on that promise shortly after the birth of their first child, packing their bags and staying with Kait’s sister and brother-in-law in Narragansett while they searched for a house. It didn’t take long for the couple to fall for the picturesque neighborhood with its close proximity to the water, and despite limited real estate offerings, soon found and purchased a home. However, there was this other house around the

corner that caught their eye. “We always admired this beautiful Colonial on our family walks,” Kait begins, “with gorgeous gardens that looked plenty big enough for our growing family.” The Yicks soon heard through mutual friends that the owners might be interested in selling. “Sure enough, six years later (and hundreds of walks and bike rides of admiring the house from afar), our friends put us in contact, and we toured the home. We knew we loved it immediately and worked out a purchase and sale agreement.”

Once the house was theirs, Alan and Kait wanted to make some modifications to suit their family. Says Kait, “We knew we wanted clean, bright, airy, natural, kinda modern, kinda classic, kinda beachy, kinda farmhouse… and we also have three small kids so we realized that we had to factor that in as well.” Alan explains their decorating style falls in the “we think we know what we like but we don’t know how to do it,” so they called White Slate Studio, a nearby interior design business. “Julie (Sanford) and Rachel (Pappas) really made our vision come to life!” Sanford and Pappas got to work on a host of both cosmetic updates and custom work, which included installing floating benches and shelves to both sides of the dining room fireplace and the unexpected use of shiplap in a vaulted living room ceiling. “Maybe our favorite custom build

is the simple white desk we built for the playroom where the kids can sit and draw, work on art projects, or do homework,” says Sanford. One year later, dream digs aside, Kait says that the best thing about living here is the community. “The family values are so strong. The people are kind, caring, and loving, and raising their children to be the same. The schools and teachers are amazing. We couldn’t imagine a happier and more wholesome place to be raising our family.”

Meet Molly Andrade Our Miss Rhode Island has an extended reign, her own ice cream flavor, and sights set on serving in public office
Your reign as Miss Rhode Island has seen our state through some of the most turbulent times in recent history, and due to COVID-19, you will be serving an additional year. How do you feel about the extension? For the first time ever, I’ll be serving for two years in a row. Having the opportunity to represent our great state for an additional year is an incredible honor! This year will be dedicated to continuing my work with my social initiative SARA (Sexual Assault Resistance and Awareness) to empower women through the art of self-defense. I’m also looking forward to being out in the community again and plan on making the most of this extra year. What are your favorite small, locally owned businesses to buy things like gowns, jewelry, and everyday clothes? As Miss Rhode Island I love being able to highlight our incredible local businesses. For pageant/prom wear I always trust Infusion Boutique in Warwick. In Newport I love Groove for summer wear and everyday clothes, and Jason & Co. for jewelry. What are your favorite Rhode Island summer treats? Growing up on Aquidneck Island, I have gone to Frosty Freez in Middletown since I was a kid. Last summer I partnered with them to create Molly’s Mocha Chip, where a portion of every cone purchased goes to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals!
What do you think is the most beautiful spot in Rhode Island? Anywhere you can see the water and sunset make for some of the most beautiful moments that you can experience just about anywhere in our state. I encourage people to explore a different part of our small home and revisit what makes our state unique. MissRIMollyAndrade.com 24

DINE
Contrary to its name, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory (4820 Old Post Rd.) does not make, or even sell, umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a great place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar where you’ll find everything from penny candy to local art. The expansive property, reopened with restrictions, is filled with flowers, sculptures, and places to sit and take everything in. The Umbrella Factory Gardens is an on-site greenhouse that sells unique plants and florals. There’s a bamboo maze and a barnyard filled with emus, goats, and chickens.
The Breachway Grill (1 Charlestown Beach Rd.) offers a huge menu – pizza, burgers, steaks, and day-fresh seafood in a casual patio environment. Next door, the Breachway Gourmet has a large prepared food section, as well as made-to-order deli sandwiches with imported deli meats and cheeses. Gemelli’s Bistro also offers prepared food and Italian cuisine, and the restaurant offers another unique convenience – a drive thru. Johnny Angels Clam Shack (523 Charlestown Beach Rd.) is a waterfront clam shack serving all of the traditional New England summer fare you

can handle. The Cove (3963 Old Post Rd.) is a family-friendly restaurant with a huge menu filled with pasta, seafood specialities, burgers, and more. The Nordic (178 East Pasquiset Trl.) is a lakeside restaurant known for their legendary all-you-can-eat seafood and more – be sure to make reservations before you go. Dave’s Coffee serves their own roasted coffee in their cafe, and also sells its beans by the bag. The gourmet shop also makes and sells its own coffee syrup – used for making Little Rhody’s official state drink – coffee milk!

Ea st G r e e nw i c h URBAN SOPHISTICATION MEETS COASTAL CHIC
A small town with a city feel, East Greenwich is a must-stop destination. A new wave of trendsetting restaurants and chic shops are drawing crowds to stroll Main Street and beyond.
EAST GREENWICH Urban sophistication meets coastal chic
Goddard Memorial State Park
Main Street, the center of town, is dotted with clothing, home, and gift stores, like Zuzu’s (165 Main St.) and Therapy Boutique (235 Main St.) for women’s fashion; White Elephant (351 Main St.) for upcycled home decor; and Organical Botanical (110 Main St.) for herbal, aromatherapeutic bath and body products. Sweet Twist (5707 Post Rd.) has an ever-changing collection of seasonal accessories for you and your home, as well as small batch chocolate confections. Le’s Isle Rose (1000 Division St.) is an enormous store packed with souvenirs, gifts, clothing, home decor, and fresh flowers. Blueprint 5 (631 Main St.), an upscale men’s store, features imported Italian clothing and an on-site tailor.
DINE When people from Providence are heading to East Greenwich for dinner, you know big things are happening in the culinary scene. Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar (240 Main St.) offers fresh-from-the-boat seafood in a classic New England setting. Breakfast and lunch are next level at Dante’s Kitchen (315 Main St.), where American favorites

are served with a creative Southern twist. T’s Restaurant (5600 Post Rd.) has been a Rhode Island favorite for decades. With three locations in the state, the homestyle restaurant is known for their all-day creative breakfast. For worldly cuisine, no passport is needed when you’re on Main Street. La Masseria (223 Main St.) serves upscale Italian cuisine in an authentic countryside setting. Raku Sakura (148 Main St.) can cure any sushi fix. Rasa (149 Main St.) is an upscale Indian restaurant, and Kon Asian Bistro & Hibachi Grill (553 Main St.) offers a fun dining experience with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Even coffee gets the epicurean treatment in East Greenwich. Felicia’s Coffee (5757 Post Rd.) couples an inviting coffeehouse atmosphere with a huge selection of flavored and specialty coffee. The Nook Coffee House (307 Main St.), one of the area’s newest spots, is committed to locally sourced coffee, teas, baked treats and the community, displaying and selling local art and donating 20 percent of proceeds to local COVID-19 relief efforts. Also new to town is LineSider Brewing Company (1485 South County Tr.), a smallbatch beer facility and taproom co-owned by
Blu on the Water
a retired New England Patriots player. To taste some of Rhode Island’s food heritage, stop by Jigger’s Hill & Harbour Diner (145 Main St.), which has been around since 1917 and is a go-to destination for johnnycakes, the iconic food made from cornmeal ground at Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Kingston.
EXPLORE Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode Island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1772 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization. See East Greenwich’s history for yourself at its two museums. The Varnum House Museum (57 Pierce St.) is a Georgian mansion that is a time capsule of early American life. It houses 17th-century furniture and household items. The Varnum Memorial Armory (6 Main St.) houses a military history museum,

The East Greenwich Marina (28 Water St.) usually offers transient dockage by the hour or overnight and has two on-site restaurants. Finn’s Harborside (38 Water St.) has been serving fresh seafood and New England fare for over 40 years, and has live music on the weekends. Blu on the Water (20 Water St.) is the place to see and be seen in the summer. Goddard Memorial State Park (1095 Ives St.) is an expansive green space shared by Warwick and East Greenwich. JAMESTOWN A laid-back island getaway Just a bridge away, Jamestown is Rhode Island’s hidden gem. This island has gorgeous, unspoiled nature to explore, some of the state’s best food, and a fraction of the crowds of other tourist destinations. DINE For an island with a little over 5,000 residents, Jamestown has a lot of impressive dining options. Simpatico Jamestown (13 Narragansett Ave.) serves an eclectic menu that blends classic Rhode Island foods with worldly flavors. J22 Tap and Table (22 Narragansett Ave.) is a great example of keeping things small and doing them right. The restaurant is cozy, and the small menu changes often. Every ingredient is local and at the peak of freshness, and everything – down to the cocktail sauce – is housemade. If you’re looking for something a bit more casual, Slice of Heaven (32 Narragansett Ave.) is a European-style bakery that serves breakfast and lunch, plus coffee, pastries, and cocktails. Wood-fired artisan bread and pizza are made from scratch and baked
on-site at Village Hearth Bakery (2 Watson Ave.). The rustic and cozy bakery cafe only accepts cash, so be sure to stop at the ATM before you visit. IslandDish Fresh Market To Go (40 Narragansett Ave.) will be a brandnew “groceraunt,” bar, and cafe starting in August. East Ferry Deli (47 Conanicus Ave.), open for breakfast and lunch daily, is known for their specialty sandwiches and sweeping waterfront views. The Narragansett Cafe (25 Narragansett Ave.), aka The Ganny, is known for some of the area’s best live music every night during the summer. Bands range from jazz and blues to rock, and are always danceable. On Sunday afternoons, head there for Blues, Bloodies and Brunch, featuring live blues and swing, creative Bloody Marys and mimosas, and their signature Benedict varieties.
Watson Farm
Beavertail State Park (Beavertail Rd.) is notably one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in New England. The rocky coastline offers views of Newport and the Atlantic Ocean from any of its four overlooks and from the hiking trails throughout. Beavertail is also home to a lighthouse and a small aquarium with exhibits on local sea life. Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) was so taken with Beavertail that he filmed scenes from Moonrise Kingdom there. Spend an afternoon exploring, or enjoy their environmental interpretive program with guided excursions. Jamestown is only nine miles long and one mile wide, but there’s a lot of history on the island. Fort Wetherill (3 Fort Wetherill Rd.), an abandoned military fort, is a mustsee destination. Besides the fort itself,

Conanicut Battery National Historic Park (Battery Ln.) is home to several earthen fortifications dating back to the Revolutionary War, built by both colonists and the British. Explore the trails, which have information on the park’s history. Fort Getty Park (1050 Fort Getty Rd.), another piece of Jamestown’s military history, has fishing areas and a campground. Watson Farm (455 North Rd.) has been in operation since 1796, and offers self-guided tours of livestock, wildlife, and farm history. The Jamestown Historical Society (92 Narragansett Ave.) is a hub for all of the island’s historic preservation, including the Jamestown Museum,

Meetinghouse, and Jamestown Philomenian Library; the planned Summer 2020 exhibit is The Art of Jamestown. Be sure to see the windmill, located on North Road near Weeden Land. Due to COVID-19 the windmill is open in 2020 by appointment only (JamestownHistoricalSociety.org). Plus, be on the lookout for the Jamestown Art Center’s special Outdoor Arts installations across the island!
PLAY Skip the Newport traffic by parking in Jamestown and then taking the Jamestown Newport Ferry (1 East Ferry Wharf) across the harbor. Of course there’s Aunt Carrie’s (1240 Ocean Rd.) – celebrating their centennial – and Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House (1151 Point Judith Rd.): two venerable seafood restaurants across the street from one another and which have sparked many a debate over personal preference by generations of Rhode Islanders. For fine dining, 1230 Ocean Bistro (1230 Ocean Rd.) has water views and a huge deck, while Chair 5 at The Break Hotel (1208 Ocean Rd.) has poolside gourmet dining and a more casual menu on its roof deck. As the hub of Block Island transportation, Galilee sees the most tourist traffic. Though the Block Island Ferry (304 Great Island Rd.) also sails from Newport and Fall River, MA, the busiest boats come and go from this port. Get there early to ensure good parking, and spend that extra time strolling around and shopping for souvenirs.
DINE George’s of Galilee (250 Sand Hill Cove Rd.) and Champlin’s Seafood (256 Great Island Rd.) are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a second-floor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including the Channel Lounge where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walkup window for beach snacks – they also offer service to your beach chair – and a full
restaurant inside. Jimmy’s Portside Seafood Restaurant (321 Great Island Rd.), a few steps down the road, serves day-caught seafood in their large dining room and outdoor patio.
EXPLORE There’s a reason you see Point Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island: It’s simply the best. The state’s freshest, most coveted seafood is brought into this port. Get it right from the source at the fishing docks, where you can pick up lobsters, squid, clams, and whatever other seafood is fresh and in-season.
PLAY Salty Brine State Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. Catch some fish from a custom yacht with Seven B’s (30 State St.), plus whale watch with Frances Fleet (33 State St.), both operating at limited capacity.

Across the street, Cap’n Jack’s (706 Succotash Rd.) – along with its sister restaurant Salt Marsh Pub and Raw Bar – serves up traditional New England fare, and has an attached bakery that’s nearly impossible to resist. Bring your own wine to Jim’s Dock (1175 Succotash Rd.), where you can pick your own lobster and eat it on picnic tables on an actual fishing dock. Daddy’s Bread (805 Moonstone Beach Rd.) is a hidden bakery where you’ll never see a baker. The Ocean Mist (895 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is the quintessential beach bar: great pub fare, cold beers, and easygoing patrons. By day, the O Mist is a family-friendly restaurant. By night, it’s the place to be when you’re coming straight off the beach and need refreshment. Next door,
The Pub has traditional Irish food, as well as several decks, beach access, and lots of live music; across the street is Matunuck Pizza (920 Matunuck Beach Rd). Looking for ice cream? The Vanilla Bean (757 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is a summer staple.
EXPLORE Trustom Pond is a great place for a walk or small hike; locals also traverse Succotash Road, despite there being no paved walkways, which is surrounded by marshes.

Rivaling Providence and Newport, Westerly is a foodie’s dream town. A large Italian population has given the town its own iconic
food: Soupy is a dry-cured Italian pork sausage descended from the sopressata of the area’s Calabrian heritage. EXPLORE
Traditionally, Misquamicut has been one of the only places in South County where servers bring you lunch, complete with cocktails, while you’re actually on the beach. Paddy’s Beach Club (159 Atlantic Ave.) has lounge chairs available on their private beach area, as well as several outdoor bars. You can walk straight off the sand, have lunch, and hear some live music in the afternoon at The Andrea (89 Atlantic Ave). The Windjammer Surf Bar (321 Atlantic Ave.) normally offers live music and sweeping ocean views. The Pleasant View Inn (65 Atlantic Ave.) is a beachfront resort with a private beach and on-site restaurant. The Hotel Maria (132 Atlantic Ave.), the beach town’s newest boutique hotel, is just steps off the beach and serves Mediterranean-inspired seafood at Maria’s Seaside Cafe.
From Misquamicut State Beach, head East on Atlantic Avenue to discover the scenic beauty of the Winnapaug and Quonochontaug salt ponds, each opening to the Atlantic Ocean via a breachway lined with rock jetties. A couple of turns later, find the rustic grandeur of the Weekapaug Inn (25 Spray Rock Rd.), a coastal boutique hotel.
SORhodeIsland.com
PLAY Atlantic Beach Park (321 Atlantic Ave.) is an oceanfront family center, offering carnival-style rides and a hundred-year-old carousel. Bayview Fun Park (330 Atlantic Ave.) is a destination with batting cages, bumper boats, mini golf, and go-karts. Friday night (and Thursday and Saturday come July and August) brings the Misquamicut Drive-In (316 Atlantic Ave.) to the beach, featuring classic movies under the stars.
SHOP Shops along Bay Street and Fort Road offer beautifully curated summer shopping, from the colorful – and covetable – summer prints at Lilly Pulitzer (31 Bay St.) to nautical-inspired bags made from recycled sails at Sea Bags (101 Bay St.).
DINE St. Clair Annex (141 Bay St.) is Watch Hill’s iconic ice cream parlor and clam shack. Olympia Tea Room (74 Bay St.), even at over 100 years old, continues to put a fresh spin on classic New England fare. For sweets, head to The Candy Box (14 Fort Rd.), a quintessential coastal candy shop, and Downtown Westerly’s gelato spot has its seasonal Pompelmo by the Sea (12 Fort Rd.) that’s perfect on a warm summer day. Feeling luxurious? While staying at Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) can be pricey, the hotel is visitor friendly, especially the expansive Verandah Raw Bar that’s usually perfect for cocktailing and people watching. Restaurants range from a more casual gastropub and patio snacks to a fine dining experience and champagne garden.
EXPLORE East Beach is the little strip of white sand between Ocean House and Taylor Swift’s mansion. Parking can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. Watch Hill’s Napatree Point is a popular spot for beachgoers, and it’s also a nature preserve where endangered piping plovers nest, so it’s a popular bird-watching spot as well. Sandy Point was once attached to Napatree, but hurricane erosion separated the two. The 35-acre island also has a public beach and is a nature preserve.
PLAY Enjoy the simple pleasure of reaching for a brass ring at the Flying Horse Carousel (151 Bay St.), the oldest operating carousel in the United States where the horses are suspended from chains. The Watch Hill Lighthouse (14 Lighthouse Rd.), a 15-minute walk from downtown Westerly, dates back to 1856, and its museum is typically open to the public in July and August.

BLOCK ISLAND An island adventure just a ferry ride away
Block Island Ferry
Photo by (L) John McNamara, ( R) Tania Picard
SHOP If you’re arriving on the island by the Block Island Ferry, you’ll land in Old Harbor, which is the busy “Main Street” of the island. Dodge and Water streets are full of boutiques, surf shops, and novelty souvenirs and apparel retailers like the Glass Onion (241 Water St.), which is celebrating 50 years of eclectic home goods. Nearby check out Golddiggers (90 Chapel St.) for fine and novelty jewelry.
DINE There are so many options for delicious food on Block Island – your only boundaries are your stomach and your ferry time. Just steps off of the ferry in Old Harbor, Mohegan Cafe (213 Water St.) brews its own beer. Head over to Persephone’s Kitchen (235 Dodge St.) for egg and avocado sandwiches, gluten-free

banana bread, and their signature smoothie bowls. The Beachead (598 Corn Neck Rd.) is not only conveniently located down the street from the town beach, but it’s also crazy delicious. Payne’s Donuts is an island tradition, served hot and fresh from their food truck all summer. Poor People’s Pub (33 Ocean Ave.) serves gastropub fare, and its sister restaurant TigerFish (126 Corn Neck Rd.) serves creative Asian cuisine. Boater-friendly restaurant The Oar (off West Side Rd.) has showers on the lower level and a lively dining area with an outdoor bar above. The National (36 Water St.) has great views of the harbor from its wraparound porch. Kimberly’s (238 Ocean Ave.) offers Italian and American favorites. Ballard’s Inn (42 Water St.) has its own beach and traditionally serves food and cocktails – in pineapples, no less – right on the sand. Speaking of cocktails, The Beach Bar
at the Block Island Beach House (32 Dodge St.) promises to entice guests with refined pub food and spectacular views. Take a walk on the dock at New Harbor and reward yourself with a mudslide at Trader Vic’s, a rooftop bar where you can watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. Or grab a quick bite overlooking the Great Salt Pond at Block Island Oyster Bar (79 West Side Rd.) at Champlin’s Marina.
EXPLORE Nearly half of Block Island is protected from development by organizations like the Block Island Conservancy (234 Weldon’s Way), which offers resources on exploring hiking trails around the island. The Block Island Maritime Institute (216 Ocean Ave.) gives kids and families opportunities to explore the ocean and sea life and is hoping to open late

SHOP Within a relatively small footprint, different streets and areas around Newport each offer unique retail experiences. Enter via Broadway to find all kinds of funky stores, turn onto Thames Street for a mix of national retailers, souvenirs, furniture, and small shops, or head over to Bowen’s Wharf for jewelry, apparel and more along the water. On America’s Cup Avenue, enjoy meandering small boutiques or make your way up to Bellevue for upscale and artisanal businesses – and don’t skip spots like Spring Street either.

Seafood is the starring attraction at several downtown restaurants, including the sleek and modern Midtown Oyster Bar (345 Thames St.) and family-friendly Fluke Newport (41 Bowens Wharf). Though Stoneacre Brasserie (28 Washington Sq.) changes its menu on a daily basis, you can count on Instagram-worthy, seasonal-focused dishes. Winner Winner (677 Thames St.) serves up fried chicken with creative and upscale Southern sides. Everything is gourmet at Mission (29 Marlborough St.), where burgers, hot dogs, and French fries are next level delicious. It’s a scientific fact: A cocktail is best enjoyed outside, by the water, in the summer.
Newport has many options for oceanside imbibing, like the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking (1 Bellevue Ave.) and the Lawn at Castle Hill (590 Ocean Dr.). Both have prime spots for sitting in the sunshine, sipping a delicious cocktail, and taking in the view. The Salvation Cafe (140 Broadway), an eclectic restaurant a bit off the tourist path, serves up seasonal mojitos, sangria, and tropical tasting concoctions in its courtyard Tiki Bar. Speaking of tiki drinks, Diego’s (11 Bowens Wharf) massive cocktail menu has them, as well as mezcal and tequila libations. Taste the difference between silver, reposado, and anejo at Perro Salado (19 Charles St.), where tequila flights offer tastings of the imported and hard-tofind spirit. Pour Judgement (32 Broadway), known for their fun drinks and food all week long, goes all out for Sunday brunch with their signature Loaded Bloody Mary.

EXPLORE Newport’s best known attractions are the Newport Mansions, the larger-thanlife “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilts and other illustrious turn-of-the-century families. The Breakers (44 Ochre Point Ave.) is the grandest of all of them; Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Ave.) has been the site of films like The Great Gatsby and True Lies; Marble House (596 Bellevue Ave.) has a Chinese teahouse on the grounds; and The Elms (367 Bellevue Ave.) has a to-die-for classical sculpture garden. There are also many cultural attractions, like the Newport Art Museum (76 Bellevue Ave.), the National Museum of American Illustration (492 Bellevue Ave.), the Audrain Automobile Museum (222 Bellevue Ave.), and the International Tennis Hall of Fame (194 Bellevue Ave.).
PLAY Brenton Point State Park is a green space on Ocean Avenue – its proximity to the windy shore makes it a perfect location for kites, which dot the sky on warm days. Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach, has a boardwalk, a killer snack bar – seriously, try the twin lobster rolls – and a carousel. It’s also home to the Save the Bay Exploration Center (175 Memorial Blvd.), an aquarium where kids can get up close with Narragansett Bay’s aquatic life. The Cliff Walk, a three-and-a-half-mile mostly paved trek, offers breathtaking views of the coast. About a third of it is rough or rocky, so proper footwear is advised. Another adventurous way to see the Narragansett Bay is on the Rail Explorers, a pedal-powered vehicle that rides along the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad. The City by the Sea’s anticipated film festival returns – at a safe social distance – with newportFILM Drive-In, a series of traveling documentary screenings around Aquidneck Island. Looking to surf? Catch a wave with a board rental from longtime local fave Water Brothers (39 1/2 Memorial Blvd.). Enjoy lobster and fishing tours with Fish n’ Tales Adventures (31 Bowens Wharf).

A CHIC AND HISTORIC COASTAL COMMUNITY
The series of communities east of Narragansett Bay are collectively known as the East Bay. The coastal area – which includes towns Barrington, Warren, Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton, and Little Compton – is also home to many of Rhode Island’s largest farms, vineyards, and parks.

Unique and whimsical shops can be found throughout the East Bay. Kick off your jaunt in Warren along Route 114 with a first stop to the massively fun Imagine Gift Store (5 Miller St.), which is also New England’s largest gift shop, or stroll a few streets over to visit the cute and charming Whimsies (4 Church St.). Head to the water to discover more shops including The Peyton Company (246 Water St.) for organic bath and beauty products. In Bristol, Caron Jewelers (473 Hope St.) has a stunning collection of fine jewelry, and browse local artisan gifts galore at Hotpoint Emporium (39 State St.). Find flowers, jewelry, and more at daisy dig’ins (123 Maple Ave.) in Barrington, or cross over the Mount Hope and Sakonnet bridges for an all-day, quintessential New England shopping experience at Tiverton Four Corners (Main Rd.), with a diverse variety of antique, artisan, boutique shopping, and galleries.
DINE Sweet Berry Farm (915 Mitchell’s Lane, Middletown) is a lush, conserved, 100-acre estate that includes a market cafe and pick-your-own fruit.

A small family farm, Sakonnet Farm (4042 Main Rd., Tiverton) offers free-range eggs, fresh produce, and homemade jams and pies. Wishing Stone Farm (25 Shaw Rd., Little Compton) is a modest-sized farm that has historically presented Instagram-ready farm dinners with some of the Ocean State’s top restaurants and chefs. Newport Vineyards (909 E Main Rd., Middletown), New England’s largest grape grower, is a major destination that offers wine tastings, tours, and farm-to-plate cooking at Brix Restaurant. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards (162 West Main Rd., Little Compton) is a dreamy space with award-winning wines. Find award-winning cuisine in Warren at Eli’s Kitchen (40 Market St.), creative small plates at The Revival Craft Kitchen and Bar (50 Miller St.), and Insta-worthy brunch at Uptown Food & Spirits (437 Main St.). There’s seafood classics with nautical vibes abound at Thames Waterside Bar & Grill (251 Thames St.) in Bristol and a view to match at Bluewater Bar + Grill (32 Barton Ave.) in Barrington. Then, don’t forget to check out 15 Point Road Restaurant (15 Point Rd., Portsmouth), an upscale-meets-casual dining destination on the waterfront.
EXPLORE Though this picturesque waterfront town draws locals and visitors for its hopping downtown dining and shopping scene, Bristol is also a destination for historic sites. Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum (101 Ferry Rd.) is an impeccable property that includes the 1890s summer cottage of Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle. Tours of the mansion and extensive gardens are offered throughout the year along with virtual and onsite programs. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, Mount Hope Farm (250 Metacom Ave.) is a historically significant property that dates back to early American settlement. In fact, some historians believe that the first Thanksgiving feast was held here. Linden Place (500 Hope St.) is one of the grandest examples of Federalist architecture in New England. The museum gift shop is open and at press time the mansion planned to open late June. Consider a scenic drive to Little Compton where you’ll find Wilbur’s General Store (50 Commons), Art Cafe, honor system farm stands, and idyllic farmcoast vistas.

PLAY Colt State Park (Hope St., Bristol), often called the “gem” of the state parks, is a gorgeous public space with panoramic views of the coast, impeccably manicured lawns, four miles of bike trails, hundreds of picnic tables, and a small town beach. Nearby, the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium (1401 Hope St., Bristol) typically offers visitors interactive exhibits about marine and wildlife and leaves its grounds open for long walks. The natural history museum is located right off the East Bay Bike Path, a 14.5-mile paved and scenic trail that spans from Bristol to Providence. hiking trails on its educational campus. Of course, it isn’t summer in the East Bay without the Fourth of July in Bristol. Often referred as the “most patriotic town in America,” this waterfront community is home to the nation’s longest running Fourth of July parade. The Bristol Fourth of July Celebration is typically a multi-week series of events that includes a ten-day Concert Series at Independence Park and the fancy Fourth of July Ball at the Herreshoff Marine Museum, ultimately culminating in a massive Fourth of July parade. This year, expect your favorite festivities on a slighter scale, like a smaller parade and events (including the concert series) slated for late August. Providence is worthy of a full vacation in its own right, but if your schedule only leaves room for a single day trip, here are some must-see highlights.

PROVIDENCE An ever-vibrant Creative Capital
SHOP Downtown Providence is home to many of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants, along with nightlife, theater, art galleries, and unique shopping. One of the most unique shopping destinations anywhere is The Arcade (65 Weybosset St.), America’s oldest indoor shopping mall, home to hip drinking and dining establishments, and a bookstore dedicated to the city’s own H.P. Lovecraft. On the street parallel, find Westminster Street, with stylish clothing for women at Queen of Hearts and Modern Love (220-222 Westminster St.), artful home goods at Homestyle (229 Westminster St.), and more. On the East Side of the city, Hope Street brims with unique boutiques: Frog & Toad (795 Hope St., second location at 713 Westminster St.) sells quirky RI merch, Rhody Craft (769 Hope St.) offers local artisan gifts, and Stock Culinary Goods (756 Hope St.) has everything your kitchen could need.
DINE Federal Hill was once Providence’s famed Little Italy, but over the past decade or so it

has become a much more multicultural dining destination. The main drag of Atwells Avenue is still home to many classic red sauce joints like Constantino’s and Massimo Ristorante, but boasts Mexican (Don Jose Tequilas), Thai (Thailand), and Japanese food (NAMI), too. For dining that’s a bit off the beaten path, head over to the West Side, which is clustered around the two main thoroughfares of Broadway and Westminster Street. This area is home to a vanguard of restaurants serving gourmet food in fun, casual settings, and hip cocktail bars, like eclectic brunch at Julian’s (318 Broadway) or clever desserts from Sin (1413 Westminster St.).
EXPLORE The East Side is full of both beautifully preserved history and vibrant young energy. For the former, check out the Benefit Street Mile of History, the most impressive concentration of colonial homes in the country. For the latter, visit Thayer Street, the epicenter of College Hill’s food and nightlife scenes. Home to Brown University, the Rhode Island
School of Design, and the RISD Museum (20 North Main St.), this neighborhood attracts the bright and creative. Colorful murals and structures can be spotted throughout the city’s center, most of them courtesy of The Avenue Concept. The public arts program has quite literally transformed the cityscape, including the largerthan-life Still Here (32 Custom St.) installation with acclaimed artist Gaia.
PLAY Explore the city from a different vantage point by paddling with rentals from Providence Kayak (15 Bridge St.). Tour the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers, the Pedestrian Bridge, Waterplace Park, and more. Guided tours are also available. Around mid-August pack your camera or charge your phone and head to where Wickenden Street meets South Main for 10,000 Suns. This empty parcel of land turned public art project dazzles visitors each bloom season with dense rows of tall wavy sunflowers and there’s even a red chair or two for picture taking fun.

WARWICK Central Rhode Island’s leading city

If you’re arriving by air, Warwick is your gateway to the Ocean State. SHOP Warwick is home to the sprawling Warwick Mall (400 Bald Hill Rd.), which features more than 80 shops, plus a movie theater and several surrounding dining destinations. Shop artisan gifts made by local veterans at Operation Made (1060 Toll Gate Rd.), or follow Route 1 to quaint Pawtuxet Village and enjoy cafes, boutiques, and scenery.

DINE Iggy’s Boardwalk (889 Oakland Beach Ave.) is a Rhode Island classic, which features clam shells stuffed with a seasoned breading and minced clam mixture (aka “stuffies”), clam cakes, and chowder, and their famous golden-fried “doughboys”. Top of the Bay (898 Oakland Beach Ave.) offers a view of the Bay alongside casual New England fare. If you’re a beer lover, try the brews at Apponaug Brewing Co. (334 Knight St.), and if you’re looking for something with atmosphere, try the whimsical Tree House Tavern (1094 Centerville Rd.) located in a converted 19th century farmhouse.
Pawtuxet Village boasts adorable shops and dining, plus a water view where the Pawtuxet River flows into the Bay
EXPLORE While this central Rhode Island hub is best known for T.F. Green Airport (2000 Post Rd.), there’s still plenty else to discover. Rocky Point was a large amusement park, drawing crowds until it closed in 1995. Now, Rocky Point Park offers natural trails and unmatched views of Narragansett Bay. Oakland Beach is a sandy getaway with a boat ramp and saltwater swimming.

Keeping it Fresh
Meet Raw Bob’s new owner Jill Burton
In the video, a hunky young man with a five o’clock shadow stands behind a counter and speaks meaningfully to the camera. “Raw Bob’s started out selling a few juices and a few smoothies in a little hole-in-the-wall a few doors down,” he says. “Fast forward. Raw Bob’s expands. It grows. Why? We listen to the people. We love the people.” The melodramatic monologue is part of an ongoing series, “Mondays with Mike” featuring their own nutritional mixologist Michael Dubuc that gets posted on the Raw Bob’s Facebook page. “Let’s just start out by saying that Mike is a national treasure,” says Jill Burton, the new owner of Raw Bob’s Organic Juicery. “We started making these videos as a way to inform people with what’s going on with the shop, but then they just kept expanding to different topics. People love the videos and love hearing Mike’s perspective. He is able to be informative but also deep and at the same time, light and humorous – something we all could use a good dose of now.” As it happens, there are a lot of things to talk about: After seven years on Main Street in East Greenwich, the plant-based juice company has moved to 5800 Post Road. The original owner, Patti Burton, has handed off the business to her daughter, Jill, so that she could focus on her new business, PB Bistro & Bar. Never mind the pandemic and general anxiety of our times; Jill is just happy to be taking over a business that she loves and moving into a building with its own parking lot. “We love the vibe on Main

Street and our neighbors and friends that we have made over the past seven years,” says Jill. “The decision to move was made based on lack of parking on Main Street and the want to distance ourselves a bit from my mother’s [new] restaurant. We didn’t want to be each other’s competition.” As the “Mondays with Mike” video suggests, Raw Bob’s started as a modest juice bar that Patti founded seven years ago. “Bob” is the name of a man – Patti’s former partner’s father – who had several health issues and required a more nutritional diet. “We started playing around with different smoothie recipes, the majority of which were gross, but we kept trying,” Jill recalls. “As we traveled around, we started seeing different juice bars that we would visit and try new things. We also realized that we did not locally have such a place devoted to fresh fruits and vegetables. The idea for Raw Bob’s was born, and as the struggle for a name continued, Raw Bob’s was thought of in honor of the man who inspired the whole concept.” Eventually, Patti wanted her own restaurant – hence PB Bistro & Bar, which opened this spring. “We went back and forth for a while, deciding if we would combine the two into one restaurant,” says Jill, “and I really wasn’t ready to let go of Raw Bob’s or try to melt the two together. I really liked it just the way it was.” In the videos, Mike stands in the now-empty location, seemingly upset, as he pretends not to know about the new address. In his hammy cadence, Mike laments his inability to make drinks without equipment. It’s a funny bit, because we know it has a happy ending. “We have reopened at our new location,” says Jill, “and things are going great so far!”

Switch Up Your Summer Scoops with Gelato This dairy-free Italian tradition is sweet, refreshing, and available all over South County
We may all scream for ice cream, but you could say that gelato is its cooler cousin. Incredibly, gelato is denser than ice cream, yet it contains only a fraction of the fat. Europeans are fanatical about gelato, and here in the US, the gourmet dessert is a sweet homage to Italian confections. Don’t get us wrong: South County in the summertime is ice cream central, and you should lap a cone to your taste buds’ content. But gelato is a smooth alternative, and it comes in more varieties than ever – no matter what your palate or dietary restrictions. Here’s a handful of local gelaterias that we know will be open for business this summer.
ALDO’S BAKERY & HANDMADE ICE CREAM This Block Island staple is known for its pastries and ice cream – as well as its 24 flavors of gelato. Its origins are pretty romantic, too: Aldo and Maria Leone immigrated directly from Italy and worked as bakers in the 1950s. They opened their own shop on Block Island in 1970, and it’s been in the family ever since. History never tasted so sweet. Block Island, AldosBakery.com COLD FUSION GELATO Across the bridge in Newport, Cold Fusion Gelato is the trendy new interpretation of the gelateria, where you can savor a scoop of gelato on the street or pick up a pint for later – along with many other delicacies. Cold Fusion has a fresh, urbane look to it, but they use purely traditional methods in their factory in Walpole, Massachusetts. Newport, ColdFusionGelato.com

NANA’S ICE CREAM Right in the heart of Narragansett, Nana’s is the ultimate beachside creamery – and you can fill buckets with candy as well. Nana’s serves up regular ice cream and frozen yogurt, but the real prize is the gelato, which comes in all flavors, from Amaretto to Tiramisu. After a few sunny hours roaming Narragansett Town Beach, you’re more or less required to stop here. You can also check out Nana’s other locations, including the recently renamed Ice Cream Factory in North Kingstown. Narragansett, NanasGelato.com POMPELMO GELATERIA Founded by an Argentinian Spanish professor, Pompelmo actually has two locations – the original Gelateria in Westerly proper and Pompelmo by the Sea in Watch Hill. True to her South American roots, Melanie Wolf serves only gelato, but you can request your flavor as a milkshake or root beer float. Westerly, PompelmoGelateria.com
