A gallery on Mineral Spring evokes the season with curated works by three artists

Amid bustling Mineral Spring Avenue is Providence Picture Frame, a 14,000-square-foot art oasis that houses Dryden Gallery. Last fall, artist Liz Kelley, known for her nature-inspired organic murals around the state, was hired as the gallery’s lead curator. Currently on display is Garden Party , an exhibit featuring the work of three women, which runs through June 15, and has Kelley’s fingerprints all over it.

“The inspiration behind this show was the anticipation of spring, the feeling of a fresh start after winter. I am a big fan of the in-between seasons when you can slow down a bit, and take a breath,” Kelley explains of the show, which opened in early April. Kelley’s discerning eye led to selecting a trio of distinct artists: Elissa Lincoln working in collage, textile artist Susan Allen, and painter Jess Jeffries. Each artist brings a unique style, infusing the space with a symphony of craftsmanship and expressive compositions.

“When it comes to group shows, I love finding a balance of size, intricacy, and color palette,” Kelley shares. “The work of Susan, Jess, and Elissa all represent different corners of the art world, but are symbiotic in their nature, each with a sense of real craftsmanship and confident compositions.”

Kelley’s curation process was deliberate, orchestrating a dynamic interplay between the artists’ works. “For this show, I wanted to have the work interact on each wall. We have four floating L-shaped walls on casters,” she explains. “Some walls only contain one artist’s work, while others

meshed together.” She cites one of Allen’s pieces as an example. “Her ‘Spring Cleaning’ resembles a pixelated letter A, and to mimic that, I stacked three of Elissa’s pieces to resemble pixels as well.” Lincoln’s meticulous paper-cutting and painting technique intricately weave layers of flora and

foliage, echoing the delicate nuances of marshlands, gardens, and bouquets, captured in a dance of shadows and light. Allen’s textile masterpieces exude a subtle yet impactful fusion of color theory and mathematical precision, elevating quilting into the realm of modern artistry with her organic compositions. Jeffries, an intuitive abstract painter, dazzles with her captivating use of space and tonal contrasts, infusing canvases with playful line work and evocative depth.

In preparing for the exhibit, Kelley embraced a collaborative ethos, entrusting artists with creative freedom. “Honestly, my involvement was minimal. I trust the artists’ visions,” she says. “I gave them a general idea of the show and its timeline meant for spring. The rest I left up to them. As an artist myself, sometimes I feel like I can’t work with too many guidelines; I would rather see what they generate in their minds.”

Lincoln reflects on her experience, praising Kelley’s approach: “Working with Liz and the Dryden Gallery was a delight. As an artist, I can sometimes find it intimidating to enter a gallery where a curator has arranged my work in a show and made their choices, but I was so blown away by the elegance of Liz’s curatorial choices, choices that are both playful and restrained. There is a true conversation going on between the pieces in the show; it almost has the gentle buzz of a garden party.”

Reflecting on the collective impact of the artists, Kelley notes, “I want the viewers to enjoy leaning into the walls to study Elissa’s intricate cut paper, then pull themselves away to study and admire Jess’ larger works from afar. Susan’s work and craftsmanship was the perfect addition to tie everything together.” Learn more at DrydenGallery.com

District and others prep for Comprehensive Plan

The evolution of the Jewelry District continues as Brown University prepares to begin work on its major Life Sciences complex, but this past month, the Jewelry District Association (JDA) has been absorbed in planning the district’s next 10 years, exploring solutions to issues of housing, zoning, land use, development, lifestyle, and more. On or before December 31, 2024, the new Providence Comprehensive Plan will go into effect, which will set the course of neighborhoods across the city.

Years ago, to facilitate the process, the State mandated that halfway through every 10-year plan, including the 2014 plan, the Planning Department would evaluate what was working and what wasn’t to inform the 2024 plan; however, that review was never done. In the past, extensive open discussion sessions over several years involved the public and a team of consultants. Today, the Planning Department is attempting to streamline this process.

As the December deadline looms, each new section is presented on the eve of a review meeting. Little time is allowed to evaluate the section, and at review meetings, public comment time is limited to two minutes per speaker, presenting neighborhoods with a mad dash to understand and comment on complex issues that directly impact their future. The JDA is working with members of other neighborhood associations to make the 2024 Providence Comprehensive Plan an effective, collaborative, and aspirational road map for the coming 10 years, and invites concerned citizens to participate in the development of the plan.

West End Garden Stroll planned for June 22

The West Broadway Neighborhood Association (WBNA) gears up for the return of their annual Garden Stroll, a self-guided tour showcasing neighborhood gardens. Last year’s event also included discounts at local businesses, informative tables by local organizations presenting on environmental topics, kids’ activities like garden bingo and art-making, and mini workshops on beekeeping, foraging, and more. Whether you’re interested in taking a peek into lush backyards and greenspaces or sharing your own creative landscaping with the public, no garden is too small. All are welcome to sign up; the stroll takes place June 22, with a map posted online closer to the date. WBNA.org

Fox Point street fair fosters community spirit

The semi-annual street fairs hosted by the Wickenden Area Merchants Association (WAMA) have drawn hundreds of visitors over the past several years, including residents and non-residents (and many of their dogs) who gather each spring and fall to mingle among artist vendors and food purveyors. This April’s Spring Makers Market seemed to draw bigger, more enthusiastic crowds than ever before, according to neighbors and organizers who participated. “It’s always great to see people from the neighborhood attending the event, as well as a large crowd of folks who are not from the neighborhood,” says WAMA president Vin Scorziello. “But this event was really a hit. The weather was great, the crowds were great. People had a lot of fun.”

Leaders of the Fox Point Neighborhood Association (FPNA) shared postcards at the fair to raise awareness of the group and increase participation in local initiatives. “A lot of people have heard of us, but aren’t really aware of what we do,” says FPNA vice president Mike Bell. “It was great to have a presence [at the fair], to talk with people, and to be visible.” FPNA president Lily Bogosian praised the community spirit that infused the event, saying, “the fair showcased many of the great things our neighborhood contributes to the City of Providence.” Wickenden-area merchants shared hopes to expand the event in fall 2024.

New trees and board members in Summit neighborhood

About 30 neighbors joined the Summit Neighborhood Association (SNA) at its annual meeting on Monday, April 29 at The Highlands, which included presentations and question time with local elected officials Representative Rebecca Kislak, Councilor Sue AnderBois, and Senator Tiara Mack. SNA also held its annual election of board officers and members, welcoming newcomers Katy Gilchrist and Michael Bradlee to the board. City Liquors provided refreshments, and The Sandwich Hut donated delicious bites.

There’s new greenery in the area thanks to Summit and Mount Hope neighbors coming together to plant 30 trees and pick up over a dozen bags of trash. SNA vice president Emily Kloeblen organized the community planting event, which came together with the help of planters from Garden Time Canopy Crew; the Providence Police Department, who diverted traffic to keep volunteers safe; a grant awarded by Councilor AnderBois to maintain tree care; and Stephan Rodriguez, who coordinated trash clean-up supplies with the city. The Providence Neighborhood Planting Program and City Forestry Division prepped the sites, selected appropriate trees, and taught the volunteers how to plant, and the Hope Street Merchant Association generously offered helpers a free coffee and pastry from Seven Stars Bakery or a discount from Kreatelier as a thank you.

Op-Ed: Lessons Learned

When a door closes, one possible governor candidate takes it as a sign to open a school, then a bridge

It’s a little over two and a half years before the next governor will be elected in Rhode Island, and for many people, it can’t come soon enough. The Washington Bridge and its effect on businesses, schools, the overall economy, everyday life, people’s schedules, and their sanity will be a major issue, along with the usual issues of education, housing, medical care.

Helena Buonanno Foulkes, the well-established and highly respected former CVS Health president and Hudson’s Bay Company CEO, entered the 2022 gubernatorial race late as a Democrat, and a dark horse who showed that a thoroughbred without being part of the political game could be a player. She came up 3,357 votes short in a five-way race with three people who had previously won statewide offices.

In the final weeks of her campaign, you could see the crowds and interest grow as the “unknown” became a “player.” “Have you met Helena?” was the “buzz” of the governor’s race, and it fell just short. Gabe Amo’s rise during the congressional race in the fall followed a similar path… but to victory.

Does she have any regrets? “My decision to run was one of the best things I’ve ever done,” she explains. A success at almost everything she has ever tried, her mantra now is a simple one. “Things happen for a reason. If I don’t succeed, I learn from the experience and get better. ‘Would have, could have, should have’ doesn’t move you forward,” she reflects.

The lessons learned give us some insight into what may be ahead. She reported successful fundraising (over $203,700 in the first quarter of this year), and when asked if this means she’s in, she laughed and said, “It just means if I do run, I will be prepared.”

On the campaign trail, many of the state’s problems and opportunities were spelled out to her. “I got to speak with thousands of people and their message was clear. Most people love living in RI, but they are concerned that there may not be jobs for them and their kids, housing availability and cost, and will we even have enough doctors to take care of us? And doctors all pointed to our reimbursement system, which is much lower than neighboring states. Whether it’s education, housing, or healthcare, we need more collaboration to figure out what works, and build it or scale it,” she explains.

Since the campaign, she remains busy splitting her time working on a wide variety of corporate boards as well as volunteering for hands-on local projects. She’s particularly enjoyed working with Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera to help get the schools returned to the city after 33 years of state control. Bruce Sundlun was governor when the state

took over and judging by the latest test results – only 4 percent of students were considered proficient in math and 6 percent in English language arts – Central Falls can only do better.

“There are many unique problems because of the makeup of their population, which can change daily, but the situation is unacceptable,” notes Foulkes, “and having spent time with many capable and vested teachers and administrators, I know that with creative and innovative thinking, this situation can be improved. It has to be!”

“One of the things that I learned from the huge growth of CVS was that many people who joined our company moved to Massachusetts because of the success of their educational system,” continues Foulkes. “Too many of our schools are not better than they were 25 years ago and that must change. That said, I do see rays of hope. We need to support all of our teachers and possibly look at some degree of regionalization. And we need to encourage and support more schools for special needs like The Wolf School [in East Providence].”

Foulkes has been back in the corporate world serving on the boards of the Follett Higher Education Group, Costco, Harry’s Inc., Skillsoft Corp., PM Pediatrics Care, the National Bureau of Economic Research, Salesforce, and an advisory for the Enterprise Development Program at Bank of America. She also joined the board of Crossroads RI.

Foulkes feels there are many tools that she has acquired during her years as president of CVS Health, a company that has an operating budget 50 times bigger than RI and over 200,000 employees. She notes, “What I realized over time is that your ability to affect change is multiplied by gazillions once you really think about how you influence people to come along with you, and that’s what good leaders in government have to really focus on.”

If she runs – and if things go her way –we might see her cutting the ribbon for the new Washington Bridge midway through her first term!

Highlights from Smiley’s Balanced Budget

The mayor proposed a balanced budget similar to last year’s with increased funding for schools, police, and climate change-related problems

In

partnership with The Public’s Radio • ThePublicsRadio.org • By

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley unveiled his proposed budget for 2025, proposing a three percent increase from last year’s budget of $598.6 million. Although the budget, which the mayor says is balanced, will look fairly similar to last year’s, the mayor is proposing several notable changes, including funding the Providence Public School District at its highest amount in seven years, adding a police academy class, and opening three positions for storm-drain cleaners. Revenue is also projected to look similar to last year.

The mayor has proposed not raising taxes on homeowners or businesses, and spokespeople for the mayor’s office in part attributed the city’s comfortable level of income to the voluntary payments in lieu of taxes its educational and health institutions pay to the city, with the notable exception of Lifespan, who has not made a payment in roughly two years.

SCHOOL DISTRICT

Among the funding amounts proposed Wednesday was a three-million dollar increase to the funding Providence contributes to its local schools. Smiley proposed spending roughly $133 million. The contribution is separate from ongoing litigation between the City of Providence and the Providence Public School Department.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The mayor is proposing raising the police budget by more than $7.5 million dollars to $114 million. Spokespeople for the mayor said most of the money is associated with Police-union mandated pay raises and other benefits, though some of it will also go to increased funding for new positions and an

added police academy class. According to the spokespeople, the hope is the department can grow to a total of 450 officers, a rise from its current number at 423.

STORM DRAIN CLEANERS

Intensifying rain storms due to climate change are increasing flooding in Providence, in part because storm drains get backed up with debris and floodwater pools in the streets. Smiley wants to hire three full time employees to be tasked with clearing storm drains during emergency rain storms.

TAX AND REVENUE

Mayor Brett Smiley is not proposing raising taxes on homeowners. However, and it’s a big however, 2024 is a tax reassessment year so homeowners are still likely to see taxes rise. Smiley is opting to keep the rate for owner-occupied properties at a rate of $10.46 for each $1,000 in tax-assessed value. Non-owner occupied households (including absentee landlords) will remain at $18.35 for each $1,000 in tax-assessed value. Commercial taxes are also set to remain the same at $35.10 for each $1,000 of tax-assessed value.

This year the city is also proposing changing from a homestead exemption for homeowners who live at their properties to an owner-occupied status. This is not a financial change, the city says, just a way for the lower rate of taxes to appear on home-buying websites such as Zillow. The city hopes that by doing so, it can attract a greater number of interested home buyers.

Spokespeople for the city suggested overall revenue will remain the same. The city earns a large portion of its revenue from its Payment in Lieu of Taxes program, a voluntary “tax” payment deal the city strikes with its private higher-educational

institutions and its hospitals. According to spokespeople for the city, institutions had never missed a payment until Lifespan stopped paying its share about two years ago. During his speech, the mayor called out the institution in an attempt to strike a new deal.

“To the Lifespan leadership team – it’s time to come to the table with a meaningful contribution,” he said. “Hospitals throughout the region

have made meaningful long term commitments to their host communities, you can too.” Through a spokesperson, Lifespan declined to comment.

A BALANCED BUDGET

The mayor and his staff described this budget as balanced, saying they did not rely on federal COVID relief dollars to fill any gaps. Instead, they took the remainder of that funding, which

must be assigned to programs by this year, and set it aside for Providence’s affordable housing trust.

“We responsibly weaned ourselves off those funds previously used to fill budget gaps by making difficult decisions to get to where we are today,” Smiley said. “We are not experiencing the dangerous fiscal cliff that communities across the country are experiencing as they develop their budgets this month.”

WHAT’S NEXT

The budget must be reviewed and approved by the Providence City Council before taking effect on July 1, 2024, the start date of the next fiscal year.

BEACH BUCKET LIST ‘24

200+ ACTIVITIES TO MAKE THIS THE BEST SUMMER EVER

Once those ice cream shop windows lift up for the first time for that coveted cone of coffee-Oreo, you feel safe putting the ice scraper away, and the sound of a random firework blast startles your pet, all the signs confirm: summer is here. Being nicknamed the “Ocean State,” Rhode Islanders rightly revel this time of year. Beaches officially open, lobster rolls are on almost every menu, and the scents of flowers, cook-outs, and suntan lotion permeate the air. But with the longer days and warmer temps come expectations. “Summer is awful! There’s so much pressure to enjoy yourself. It’s like New Year’s Eve for kids,” says Gene Belcher of the animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers . To avoid feeling like Gene, back when it was still sock-wearing weather, we scoured our sources to provide readers with the most comprehensive calendar for June, July, and August we could assemble.

With every corner of our beautiful state hosting some kind of activity, we’re sure to have missed some, and many events hadn’t posted 2024 updates at press time, so please let us know by emailing Marketing@HeyRhody.com so there’s no FOMO or hard feelings!

To avoid summer heartbreak, please always check all information with host venues.

Soulful Style

How an industrious Bristol couple created a charming and personal home

From The Soulful Cottage: Creating a Charming and Personal Home by Fifi O’Neill, CICO Books. Photography by Mark Lohman © CICO Books 2024

It’s so perfectly fitting how the name and style of textile artist Carol Riley reflect the expression “the life of Riley.” Everything about her home in Bristol exudes easygoing, carefree charm. A native of Dublin, she moved to Rhode Island in the 1980s with her English-born husband Mike, a world squash referee and coach. “It’s the longest we’ve lived anywhere,” says Riley. In between raising four children, the couple have done a lot of work on the 2,000-square-foot cottage over the years. They have brought in vintage details, well-worn character, and incorporated many personal mementos.

A19 JUNE 2024 | HeyRhody.com H ey R hody MEDIA CO.

Though the house is more than 80 years old, Riley considers it young compared to buildings back in the old country. She recalls being instantly drawn to the cottage for its charming shape, architectural details, and yard full of cherry blossom trees. “It reminded us of the cottages of Devon and Cornwall in England.” However, the interior was in dire need of improvements, both structural and cosmetic. “It was quite simply ugly, with loads of fake panels and other unsightly and deteriorating materials,” she says.

As the couple set out to improve and beautify the quaint home, they made a great team. “Mike is amazing, he goes along with my ideas and makes them happen. He is self-taught and brilliant.” Riley herself is blessed with an enviable ability to see possibilities where others might see nothing at all. A drab old sofa, a bland kitchen cabinet, a simple lampshade frame, all have ugly-duckling potential in her eyes. “It’s wonderful to transform pieces,” she observes. “But the downside of that is that it’s hard for me to throw anything away!”

Though it resembles a charming old gate, the backdrop to the porch sofa is actually a 1970s headboard revived with paint. The exotic hanging lantern was a bargain from an auction

The cottage is an inspirational setting for Riley to work on her design business, Tatters.

“I do a bit of everything: clothing, furnishings, bags and jewelry. I’m constantly changing things around. It’s not that I get bored, it’s just that my mind is always working.”

It’s the same creative drive that compelled her to transform an old church in nearby Warren into her very own tea room and boutique named The Church Palace. With the help of the entire Riley family, she has achieved remarkable results.

Whether it’s clothing or rooms, Riley is an expert at bringing in a mix of salvaged, handmade, and reimagined elements. Following her love of things that transcend time and place, the Irish maverick and her enterprising husband have turned a once forgotten cottage and an abandoned church into considered and artful spaces. Both are filled with items that keep pieces of the past alive and celebrate their original stories with both function and soul.

Tea Time

Along with a steeping hot pot, patrons will enjoy finger sandwiches and treats that could include fresh-baked scones with butter and jam, lemon hearts, fig crumble bars, crumpets, surprise pastries, and more at Riley’s latest venture, Tatters Afternoon Tea Room. It all happens by reservation at the white church transformed into The Church Palace at 324 Main Street, Warren.

Whether it’s gingham drawstring pants embellished with trimming, a patchwork coat made of luxe remnants, or vintage finds, those who like to peruse and be distinctive are sure to have a good time shopping. Check Tatters Handmade Clothing on Facebook for hours or call 401-561-3703.

True Nature

“My style has stayed pretty much the same. Thrift shops and found items.” When asked why, Riley simply states, “the ease of living with it. Unpretentious.” With its timeworn furnishings and floral accents, the cottage has very few of the quintessential trappings generally found in a home so close to the water. Riley muses, “I don’t like the coastal look, to be honest, you know, anchors and lobsters are just not my thing.”

NYC designer’s seasonal outpost on Block Island sells decor for classic beach cottage living

KEEPING

UP WITH JONES

“Winfield’s for dinner, Dick’s Fish for a fresh catch, the Block Island Farmers Market (I especially love Tracy Finn’s Bodhi’s Bees honey; we sell it at our shop), Mary MacGill for jewelry, and The Block Island Historical Society for a rainy day deep dive into local lore.”

While many Rhode Islanders may take Block Island for granted, it truly is a special place, largely prized for what it doesn’t have. There are zero largechain businesses, no traffic lights, and no need for public transportation. What it does boast are unspoiled bluffs and beaches, lighthouses, and the seasonal shop of New York City-based design consultant Tori Jones, whose primary retail space is in Manhattan. Over the years,

Jones has built a solid portfolio of credentials, working with brands like Schumacher, Veranda , Elle Decor , and House Beautiful . So why Block Island? “I grew up spending summers here and worked at several shops and galleries in town,” Jones begins, citing admiration for the many small businesses on the island. “I always dreamt about having my own little outpost.” After many years of working in the corporate world as a design editor and creative services director, she was ready

to give it a go, and Block Island became her testing ground to see if an art and antiques venture was viable.

“I had this idea to do a three-week popup shop selling antiques and vintage finds sourced largely from New England, kind of all the things I imagined in a dream summer cottage,” she says. When the small annex building on Dodge Street became available, she jumped at the chance. This will be Jones’ third full summer in the store she fills

NYC TO BI

“I spend a lot of time on the Northeast Regional train from Penn Station to Westerly. From there, I hop on a New England Airlines flight at the Westerly airport – they have a flight every hour and it’s only a 12-minute trip (with glorious views to boot).”

The shop always includes a selection of handmade patchwork quilts

largely with antiques, local art, and one-offs. “We hope there will always be something new to discover with each visit.”

This past January, Jones opened a space in Manhattan at The Gallery at 200 Lex, on the 10th floor of the New York Design Center. The Gallery is a destination for antiques in the city with 33,000 square feet of space and over 50 vintage dealers. Similar to her Block Island shop, Jones’ space is replete with painted furniture, antique textiles, and that summer staple

A mix of antique textiles and handmade cushions captured in the evening light on Block Island’s Sachem Pond, one of over 365 freshwater ponds on the island

making a comeback: wicker. “In New York, our clients are largely interior designers shopping for client projects; on the island, it’s primarily homeowners, vacationers, people coming in right off the beach. Both spaces are made up of pieces I love and I hope there’s a warm, inviting feeling that resonates.”

On opening the doors of the saltbox shop, Jones smiles and says, “it still feels exciting and full of promise. I love summer, and the idea of an all-American summer in New England is

very romanticized in my head.” Plans for the season ahead include the second installment of the popular “Block Island Summer,” an exhibit of 35-millimeter photography of the island in the 1970s by Klaus Gemming, set to debut Memorial Day weekend. “The shop is stocked with everything from fine art to canvas sun hats; we have a range in price points and smaller items that can be easily taken home as a souvenir.” Open through Columbus Day. 441 Dodge Street, Barn Annex, ToriJonesStudio.com

A headlining UK floral designer/author brings added flourish to this year’s Newport Flower Show

Like a prized perennial bloom, The Newport Flower Show returns this month to Rosecliff June 21-23. The Gilded Age mansion, with its striking white glazed terra-cotta exterior and design, which takes its cue from Versailles, makes a grand setting for the 28th year of the event held by The Preservation Society of Newport

County. The theme for this year’s show is “At Home,” and everything from displays to classes to the marketplace are sure to inspire all to bring beautiful ideas back to their abodes. From the main foyer of this former residence, attendees can wander the salon, ballroom, and dining room, admiring artist interpretations of everyday items in flowers, before making

their way to the terrace for more exhibits. Be prepared for a walk to the oceanside backlawn to observe a home orchard, cutting and pollinator gardens, and examples of outdoor living spaces. Don’t miss the daily presentations by UK-based award-winning garden designer, floral artist, photographer, and author, Lucy Hunter. Learn more at NewportMansions.org

What can attendees expect from your Newport Flower Show programs?

A warm and lighthearted look at how a creative life spent with flowers and gardens at its core can lead you to the most unexpected of places. How we sometimes overlook the everyday ordinary and if we take inspiration from that, we can turn it into the extraordinary. There will be local, seasonal flowers to delight, and demonstrations on how to fill vases and urns for every corner of your home.

Your work embodies the breathtaking beauty in imperfection. What do you hope to bring to a location known for its shiny opulence?

This is Hunter’s second book published by Ryland Peters & Small. Her first is The Flower Hunter: Seasonal Flowers Inspired by Nature and Gathered from the Garden (2022)

Rosecliff is the setting for this year’s Newport Flower Show

I’d love to think that the two can sit beside and inform each other beautifully. I adore and aspire to a bit of opulence in my soil-covered-hands world and I’m certainly inspired by old world glamor from the 1920s both in the US and Europe. But just as strong architectural bones form the backbone of any good garden design, the flowers should always soften the edges and bring a little lightness to the party. Nothing in nature is perfect, but it is that imperfection that tells the story so beautifully and gives, to my mind, its authenticity. Roses that have a glorious arching habit and the most wonderful scent that stops you in your tracks; a branch that has fought for light at the back of the border and has an incredible wild shape; dahlias being rowdy in the herbaceous bed; daisies that are a bit windblown and look like they’ve just had the best night out and now carry their slightly sore heads home –they, to my mind, can tell a wonderful story in a vase or urn, soften those opulent edges, and bring a bit of romance to the proceedings.

What are your favorite flowers to work with and why?

I’ve been lucky enough to work in very different parts of the globe over the last couple of years. I adore working with flowers that grow naturally in a particular area. Growing up in the UK I’m always waiting impatiently for the start of the rose season in June. I don’t mean big, loud red roses that have been exported halfway across the globe, but garden roses in delicate shades of raspberry or parchment. I also give a little whoop when my vines start to come out in the garden. A long trailing piece of clematis wandering through a bowl of flowers can offer an unexpected ribbon of color and texture.

Are there things you are excited about visiting and experiencing while you’re in Newport?

A trip around the mansions goes without saying. I’ve been once before with my husband and teenager in late-October about 15 years ago. I remember it being an extremely cold, wet day and I now have a recollection of The Breakers floating on a bed of fog. It would be lovely to see the gardens and bottom part of the house! Silver Anniversary

With their fine sterling jewelry business turning 25, two brothers pause to reflect and celebrate

Main Street shopping districts are often known for their specialty stores – think Stock Culinary Goods on Providence’s Hope Street or Beauty and the Bath in Wickford. Green River Silver Co. has brick-and-mortars in both of these charming locales, and in April, celebrated their 25th anniversary. The East Side store is tucked between two salons, exactly where it’s been since it opened in 1999. It sells silver jewelry. That’s it. Not sweaters or T-shirts or bells or whistles. Owners Dan and John Goldman, native Rhode Island brothers, opened a second location in Wickford in 2002. The funny thing is that the whole business was born out of that most elusive happenstance: a chance meeting. In the 1990s, the brothers were living in the Summit neighborhood in Providence and working – Dan in finance processing mortgage

applications, while John traveled back and forth to New York City, selling all sorts of merchandise at fairs and festivals. During one trip, John sat next to a man who was on his way to Mexico to buy silver. They chatted for a while, and before too long, John was on his way with him to the silver capital of Mexico, Taxco, a city 100 miles southwest of Mexico City. Silver was first mined there in the 1500s and since it has established itself as ground zero for the intricate Aztec- and Spanish-inspired designs Mexican jewelry is so often known for. Soon, it was all John was selling, and when a retail space became available on Hope Street, he and Dan decided to go into business together.

While the brothers wanted the focus of Green River Silver Co. to be Mexican silver, John did eventually find himself in other parts of the globe – Indonesia, Bali, Jaipur, India, and the America Southwest – looking for unique, hand-crafted

A

of

pieces for the store. They now sell work by a few local artisans as well as a Rhode Island collection of earrings, pendants, and bracelets featuring anchors, sailboats, waves, and more.

Green River’s customers have been remarkably loyal over the years. “In a world full of disposable jewelry,” says Dan, “our customers understand how authentic we are. We know the people who make the jewelry, and they appreciate that.” Now that this silver shop has celebrated its silver anniversary, though, there’s no end in sight. While they don’t foresee expanding their physical locations, the brothers are focusing on growing their website traffic, so that tourists who might have found them in Providence or Wickford can find them again online.

“We’re not going anywhere,” says Dan. “We love what we do. We have amazing employees and customers. We love our locations. Life is good.” Learn more at GreenRiverSilv er.com

Gift Shop

What it is:

A gift shop inspired by location with branded merch and handmade goods.

Where to find it:

From Post Road in Warwick, make your way to Arnolds Neck Drive where, as you skirt Apponaug Cove, you’ll see a fishing shanty perched over the water. Park in the lot, and walk up the ramp to the blue door!

What makes it a Rhody Gem?

Since 2000, Judy Hummel has been selling Apponaug T-shirts, handmade baskets – both Nantucket and “regular” – plus jewelry, resin-art products, hand-turned ice cream scoops, and so much more from inside this modest charmer perched above the water. “It’s an old fishing shanty from back in the 1900s,” Hummel explains, referencing a picture of the structure that hangs on the wall. “Out of 50 fishing shanties [in the area], there are only two left, and one is mine!” Inside, shoppers will find all kinds of unique items in neat displays. “I’m all about my baskets, handmade goods, bags, and shirts, and 90 percent of my shop is made in New England,” says Hummel, who’s motivated by the backstories of items when it comes to stocking the shelves: “Who made it, how it was made, or why I carry a certain vendor.”

Drag queens step up and give back around Providence

FEATURE

June means Pride season – a time to celebrate with the broad spectrum of friends, family, and neighbors who make up the LGBTQIA community, and no Pride festivity would be complete without the presence of Providence’s fantastic drag queens, who bring the fab and the fun – without them, events might have glitz, but certainly no glamor.

But more than performers, they also play a critical role in supporting nonprofit organizations by encouraging others to donate or get involved in a meaningful way. “When we started, it was all grassroots,” remembers local drag queen LaDiva Jonz. “People needed our help and we pitched in. A lot of our initial fundraisers were focused on people living with HIV and AIDS, but it grew from there, working with organizations that needed our support.”

“We get [stuff] done,” adds Haley Star. “Sometimes we make people feel a little uncomfortable, but we get the money donated and that’s what’s important.” A well-recognized dynamic duo, the queens are famous for hosting Drag Bingo to benefit AIDS Care Ocean State (ACOS), drawing sold-out crowds nine months out of the year (they take the summer off) at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston. They both studied the performing arts and it shows in everything they do.

“Haley and LaDiva have been instrumental in keeping our event alive and thriving,” shares Stephen Hogan, ACOS director of development and public relations. The organization relies on Drag Bingo for critical funding to deliver its programs and services.

Whether it’s rallying the crowd at PrideFest, hosting events for ACOS and other organizations like Adopt RI and Providence Animal Rescue League, or simply reading to kids at local libraries during story hour, the drag performers are extremely generous with their time and talent, making a huge impact not just on the gay community, but across all walks of life. “They never stop giving back and continue to connect and collaborate with so many organizations and groups in RI and surrounding areas,” says Hogan. “We are truly lucky to have such talent in our community. They are so selfless and make our home better and more inclusive for all.”

The life of a drag queen may seem like non-stop excitement, but both Star and Jonz hold down full-time day jobs as realtors. Star, AKA Stephen Gaskin, works with Residential Properties Ltd. and Jonz, AKA Gary Jacques, is with Williams and Stuart Real Estate.

When clients and customers learn that their realtors are also drag queens, both Star and Jonz say that it has always been a positive experience. “As a realtor, you’re performing,” shares Star. “I need to show up in much the same way, but my audience is my clients. They enjoy buying and selling with me because I do everything to make the transaction – which can be scary, especially for first-time buyers – fun. And they appreciate that.”

Star and Jonz are two of the most recognizable drag performers around town

For Jonz, educating the public is part of a personal mission, explaining, “I’m very open with my clients about who I am and what I do. Many of them find it fascinating and want to know more about doing drag, and I’m happy to share my experiences with them. It’s a great way to educate people about what it means to do drag.”

“Plus, it’s like they get two realtors for the price of one,” cracks Haley, adding, more seriously, “This is the first time in my professional life that I feel like I can be myself. I’m thankful to Residential Properties and Sally

for that,” referring to the company’s president and CEO Sally Lapides. One of the guiding principles of the real estate firm is that “diversity is a fact, inclusion is a choice,” a message that resonated with Star and cemented the decision to work there.

The flexibility of a realtor’s schedule fits perfectly with the life of a drag queen, with events at clubs and bars often running late into the evening or even early morning. They can schedule their showings and closings later in the day and – maybe – sleep in when they

have the chance, though there’s scarce moments to take a break for queens who are so active in the community.

Star also serves as Glambassador for the Providence-Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB). Together, she and Jonz traveled to Alexandria, Virginia to promote tourism in the Ocean State. “They are so great to work with,” says president and CEO of PWCVB Kristen Adamo. “Poised and professional. Everyone embraced them and they helped us create some of our best ad campaigns.”

Not all fun and games, the performance art form of drag is also business. Star and Jonz have a strategy for promoting their appearances via Drag in RI, a virtual platform that allows fans to keep up with their events like Drag Brunch and performances at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket or the Comedy Connection in East Providence. They even accept bookings for private parties.

“Everyone loves Drag Brunch,” declares Jonz. “Who doesn’t want to be entertained while enjoying a Bloody Mary or bottomless mimosas on a Sunday morning? Once people see a show, they keep coming back.” Despite its popularity, for the most part, drag doesn’t pay very well, and

glamor doesn’t come cheap. The cost of costumes, makeup, and wigs adds up quickly. “I see so many young drag queens get started thinking they’ll make a career out of it. Honey, don’t quit your day job,” snaps Jonz. “Unless you’re RuPaul, you’re not making a living doing drag.”

Star shares that people are especially fascinated with her wardrobe and accouterments.

“Whenever someone comes to visit my home, they want to see my basement – shelves and shelves of dresses and wigs. So many sequins. I think of it all as an investment in myself, in a career that has allowed me to travel the world and entertain countless people.”

And with a YouTube page that has more than 23,000 subscribers, Star’s reach is truly global.

Fox Point queer art cafe space reformats with employee-owned business model – and menu additions

Behind a bright gold and indigo facade on Wickenden Street, where a Pride flag waves in the summer breeze, the cafe and haven for queer creatives known as Small Format has recently begun the process of reformatting. Far from changing anything about the inclusive, art-forward niche they’ve carved out in the neighborhood, the cafe is leaning even more into their original vision by becoming a worker-owned business.

“From the beginning Small Format has always prioritized community and collaboration,” says worker-owner Tameka Eastman-Coburn. “While a traditional business model is meant to build wealth for the sole owner, Small Format has always been a place for queer people to grow and build relationships. Becoming worker owned allows Small Format to fully embody these ideals, and move towards the non-hierarchical world we want to live in.”

FOOD & DRINK

Having opened in 2020 just before the pandemic ground things to a halt, the cafe has faced the full impact of COVID challenges, while still managing to find their stride as a lively coffee, cocktail, and art destination. Over the years, they’ve also served as a community free food fridge, harm reduction training site, and at the forefront of their vision, a joyful queer third space. “There are so few places that center queer community, specifically outside of nightlife, and with the intention

of being intergenerational,” says Eastman-Coburn. “We center being a space for creatives to gather and share their art, music, and writing, while also offering sips and nourishment.”

Following a month-long pause this spring to make some improvements to the space and gear up for their restructuring, Small Format is back with seasonal specials and old favorites – like the Lavender Latte, which Eastman-Coburn notes is “a tried-and-true queer coffee classic.” On the cocktail side of things, the new

Matcha Martini topped with house-made green tea foam blends brunch with nightlife vibes.

“The Not for Vampires breakfast sandwich is an addiction around here,” they continue. “If you’re a garlic lover, this one’s for you. It’s vegetarian (or vegan) and sports the most perfect whipped garlic cloud that we make in house – just try it.” Rice bowls are a new addition to the menu, and they aim to showcase local ingredients.

Encouraging gathering around the arts, Small Format also hosts regular events like

A menu of homestyle food and drinks celebrates Black culture downtown

Nestled in the heart of downtown, at the intersection of Washington and Union streets near the Biltmore Garage, Kin Southern Table + Bar offers a delightful blend of modern ambiance and soul-warming Southern cuisine.

A friend and I were excited to try Kin’s menu after hearing about their recent three-year anniversary celebration. Inside, we were greeted by an inviting atmosphere, with a lively bar in the center and R&B melodies setting the tone for the evening. “I just wanted to create a safe space that highlighted Black culture, whether it’s what’s playing on the TVs, the background music, or artwork on the walls,” shares owner Julia Broome. From morning to nightlife, Kin regularly hosts upbeat brunch events, singles mixers, and after-hours DJ music Saturdays.

We kicked off our visit with the irresistible Black Girl Magic cocktail, a concoction of peach vodka and lemonade – mixed with a dash of edible glitter, it was as dazzling to look at as it was delicious. For a non-alcoholic option, the Southern sweet tea proved a refreshing choice.

A visit to Kin isn’t complete without the Chicken n’ Waffles appetizer. Generously portioned chicken wings fried to crispy golden-brown perfection were surprisingly light, and while delicious on its own, the house-made hot sauce truly elevated the experience. Served with soft, fluffy waffles drizzled with syrup and powdered sugar, it was a delightful marriage of textures and flavors.

For our main courses, we opted for two Southern classics. The Fried Catfish stole the show – crispy and well-seasoned, it paired beautifully

with a tangy remoulade. Equally impressive was the Shrimp Po Boy, boasting plump, flavorful shrimp with a great snap – providing an ideal amount of resistance to each bite – packed within a lightly charred grinder roll.

Entrees come with two sides, including potatoes in a variety of styles, but I’d recommend the Collard Greens, with rich, savory notes of turkey, and Baked Mac and Cheese, which is creamy and topped with a coveted brown crust – both were reminiscent of your auntie’s home-cooked Thanksgiving dishes. Kin’s Candied Yams provided a sweet-savory balance. “The menu items are inspired by summer nights and BBQs with family and friends – it includes everything we need to have on the dinner table,” Broome explains.

Before leaving, we couldn’t resist indulging in a slice of Chocolate Cake adorned with whipped

cream, a decadent finale to our Southern feast. Though our stomachs were full, Broome recommended a return visit to try the Honey Garlic Chicken Wings, Shrimp and Grits, and Juju Juice – the house rum punch, which she describes as “the perfect balance of sweet, acid, and booze.”

Kin Southern Table + Bar left a lasting impression, not just for its delicious fare but also for its inviting ambiance and attentive service. Shaking Things Up

Whiskey bar’s new female GM brings reality show cred and moxie to Wickenden

When it comes to all the fine details that go into running a restaurant, The East End’s new general manager Hannah Weaver has gotten good at operating the proverbial switchboard behind the scenes. “There’s the stuff you expect, like running the floor, doing the fun things like managing the whiskey menus, planning the new cocktail programs, and getting to speak on those things to the customers,” says Weaver of her role at the whiskey bar and bistro on Wickenden Street. “Then there’s the funny things you’re not expecting, like trying to figure out trash protocols and who’s turn it is to clean the grease trap. At any minute I’m prepared to clean up broken glass, help shuck oysters, or wash silverware.”

The position is one that Weaver has earned through a dose of moxie and years of experience in all aspects in the service industry, beginning when she was 16, and over the course of a career that’s led her from Seattle to New York City to Detroit and now Providence. “I joined The East End team in 2021, right in that summer when restaurants were really starting to reopen. It was a really small staff at the time, and I think it was entirely women in the front-of-house. It was such a cool experience,” she reminisces.

Being surrounded by professional, career-driven women, as well as all female bartenders in a traditionally male-dominated space was “a dream come true.” After working as the assistant manager, Weaver took over the general manager role when the position became open. She also recently represented the Northeast region on season 13 of reality TV show MasterChef , showcasing her culinary skills and proving that she’s capable of running every aspect of a restaurant, from greeting guests and staffing to the bar and kitchen.

Weaver isn’t the only new addition to The East End. The restaurant briefly closed in November of last year for renovations,

but retained all of its employees and paid them to help, from reupholstering benches and building new table bases to pitching ideas on how to make the restaurant function better. “We got this chance to rebuild, reopen, with our own hands in it,” says Weaver. She and staff worked together to change the

low dining tables to high tops at the lower area of the restaurant, which makes the atmosphere more casual for low-commitment eating (think quick drinks and appetizers like Shishito Peppers, Point Judith Calamari, or Crispy Hakka Eggplant), while providing a feeling of space that post-pandemic

diners need. “It brings the life back into the bar,” says Weaver, who touts the success of the team-led ideas, proudly noting that the restaurant has been slammed since reopening.

Her biggest goal for The East End is to create a space that “caters to everyone at any given moment.” She is joined by the restaurant’s new head chef, Josh Davis, in developing a menu that reflects versatility to fit any diner’s wants and needs. To that end, Weaver is working to expand the bistro’s hours. “We just started opening for a late-night food service. The East Side doesn’t really have anywhere to grab dinner late – even a snack! – so we are doing burgers and fries all half-priced until midnight on Thursday, Friday, Saturday,” she says. Brunch hours to accommodate early afternoon oysters and charcuterie are in the works.

But at its core, The East End is a whiskey bar, and Weaver is creating a newsletter highlighting new spirits and happenings. With hundreds of varieties and seasonal bourbon-based cocktails, Weaver and bartenders can give recommendations based on price, taste, and flavor profile of the meal. For diehard fans, The East End’s special brown-butter-washed bourbon Kettle Corn Old Fashioned might be a good choice with a burger, as the kitchen uses the same butter from the bourbon washing to cook the meat.

But no matter your choice – from Duck Reubens or raw bar fare to burgers and pork shanks – the establishment is “a classic.” “The East End will have whatever you want,” affirms Weaver, and exceptional service. “It’s important to know you have somewhere that feels comfortable and inviting, and I think beyond food, beyond whiskey, beyond the cocktail program, that’s what we really aim to be.”

Food Trends: Lobster Roll Season

From classic to creative, a clawfull of city seafood eatery takes on an Ocean State staple

Bringing a chef-driven and scratch-made approach to the classic seafood shack experience, Dune Brothers owners chef Nicholas and Monica Gillespie source straight from the boat. “We support the local fisheries by giving them a chance to sell lesser-known species, which are just as delicious as the more commonly known cod and haddock,” says Monica, listing rotating dishes like

whole-roasted scup, pan-seared tautog, and many others.

Naturally, fans line up for their lobster roll, on a toasted brioche bun “piled high with fresh tail, claw, and knuckle meat,” says Monica. “We serve ours warm, tossed in a French-style butter sauce,” as opposed to drawn butter. “The addition of fat from the mayo and butter sauce, with the acidity

of the lemon juice, really allows the lobster meat to shine.” Dune Brothers hosts live music on weekends with Aquidneck Island Oyster and Moniker craft brews. Come early summer, watch for updates on their new seafood market and year-round restaurant coming to Fox Point, along with wholesale seafood distribution plans in the works. 239 Dyer Street, DuneBrothers.com

The Umami-Forward Roll

With chef Ryan Bessette at the helm, channeling the state’s fishing heritage into a menu of farm-to-table bounty, Rogue Island is a worthy stop on any lobster roll pilgrimage. In fact, theirs boasts accolades such as the 2022 Blue Plate Mayonnaise Best Side Dish at Hogs Fest in New Orleans. “It symbolizes our commitment to excellence in New England seafood,” Bessette explains, noting the traditional-style brioche hotdog bun and succulent lobster meat, including two claws. “A standout element is our unique tasso ham powder garnish, imparting a delightful umami burst with every bite.”

The dinner and brunch eatery isn’t afraid to “push culinary boundaries,” while prioritizing regional harvests. “From seafood to produce, all ingredients are sourced within a 50- to 60-mile radius, supporting local fisheries and farms,” says Bessette. They also collaborate with breweries for quarterly beer dinners with multi-course creative dinner pairings, and watch for themed brunches this summer. 65 Weybosset Street, Suite 108, RogueIslandGroup.com

The Street Food-Inspired Roll

With their creative spins on lobster dishes and innovative cocktails, Capri Seafood charts a culinary voyage that docks on Southeast Asian shores, bringing street food culture to Federal Hill. Owners Sotheavong Meas and Nero Keo launch a new brunch menu this season, with lobster bao buns (a fresh take on the traditional roll), birria grilled cheese, and fluffy soufflé pancakes. Choose from refreshing fruit puree beverages or the decadent Seafood Bloody Mary – an appetizer in its own right with choice of accoutrements, from lobster tail to snow crab legs, completed with crisp celery, tangy pickles, and a little bit of spice.

When it comes to the lobster roll, Capri isn’t out to mess with a classic, letting the fresh meat, cooked to perfection, speak for itself. “We expertly season the lobster, serve it on a buttery toasted brioche roll, and garnish it with fresh herbs,” says Meas. “With options for customization and a commitment to consistency, every bite of our lobster roll promises a delightful dining experience.” 58 De Pasquale Avenue, CapriSeafood.com
