Lightly sea salted whole pumpkin seeds, $8.99

SNACK ON THIS

All-natural, allergen-friendly seeds make for the perfect fall munching It all started with a seed. A homemade dry-roasted pumpkin seed, to be exact. The Conte siblings Sennen, Galen, and Elizabeth brought the fromscratch snack – the product of a recipe that had been passed down through generations – to a Halloween party, and it was a hit. From there, the trio’s passion for healthy, handcrafted eats turned into Gerbs, an all-natural food line based out of Johnston. Today, Gerbs (the oldest brother’s nickname for his kitchen savvy siblings) sells everything from seed butters to seed mixes, including the tried-and-true pumpkin variety. SPECTACULAR STATS A by-numbers breakdown of the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular

By Megan Schmit Information provided by Roger Williams Park Zoo

Think you know Rhode Island’s iconic Halloween display? The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo has drawn thousands of visitors from in-state and beyond to wander the transformed Wetlands Trail. Chances are you’ve been awestruck by the intricacies of the carvings, dazzled by the twinkling lights and cast shadows, and amazed by the sheer number of pumpkins. But here’s a new – and just as striking – look at the show, by the numbers.

5,000

The number of pumpkins you’ll see along the quarter-mile trail

140,000

Estimated vistiors over the 32 nights of the show

20,000

Pumpkins will be used throughout the month as rotted ones are replaced

BROWSING • CHEERLEADERS

GOOOO, FALL!

“One thing that I love about Rhode Island is how small it is. Everything is so close, and only 20 minutes to the beach.” Miss Rhode Island 2018 also likes spending hours playing video games at Dave & Busters in Providence or hiking in Snake Den State Park.

Rhody’s own Patriots cheerleaders share their fave things about autumn By Bob Curley

Being a New England Patriots cheerleader isn’t all glamor and glory: workouts, practices, and performances involve vast commitments of time and energy, especially during football season. But the four Rhode Islanders on the 2019-20 Patriots cheerleading squad still make plenty of time for local fun, even in the fall.

“I love to go apple and pumpkin picking at Rhode Island orchards, head down to Providence at night to see the WaterFire festival, and most of all, I love to go to the Roger Williams Park Zoo Jack-OLantern Spectacular.”

“I absolutely love the fall in Rhode Island. I enjoy going to the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, going through haunted houses, and picking apples and pumpkins. I’m also lucky enough to live in Narragansett during the school year, and the beach is absolutely beautiful to walk on during the fall.”

“I always wanted to attend the Rhode Island Seafood Festival in India Point Park, but I never got the chance. That is definitely on my bucket list.” Other favorites include WaterFire, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, apple and pumpkin picking, and wine tasting.

BROWSING • EMPTY BOWLS

HOPE-FULL Empty Bowls raises money for RI Food Bank – and showcases both artists and chefs By Robert Isenberg

“I think the metaphor is really nice,” says Kelly Seigh, event manager for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “We’re helping fill bowls in the community. It’s a kind of reminder.” The idea is catchy: Ceramic artists donate nearly 1,000 clay bowls to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. On October 17, more than 800 people will show up at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, along with 40 local restaurateurs. Each visitor will pick a preferred bowl, fill it with gourmet samples, and have a total blast. For five years, the Empty Bowls party has been the Food Bank’s most lucrative fundraiser. Kelly didn’t invent Empty Bowls, but she introduced the concept to Rhode Island, and the party has been a raging success since its inception. “We went big from the very first year,” she says. “There are just so many artists and restaurants that are donating their time. There’s so much good buzz in the room. We want this to be an event that anybody can come to.” Excitement builds long before the actual celebration. Ceramic artist John Mitchell has hosted “Empty Bowl parties” at Dew Claw Studios in Pawtucket, where crafters shape artisanal bowls specifically for the event; other ateliers do the same. Similarly, chefs were originally asked to make different kinds of soup and stews, but the menu quickly expanded to pasta,

ribs, bread pudding, mac and cheese, donuts, and cupcakes, among countless other items. Basic admission (booked in advance) is only $50, which means unlimited food and a one-of-a-kind ceramic bowl for each participant. There is a VIP table, where some of the more elaborate objets d’art are displayed, but Kelly says that there is plenty of creativity to browse. The Food Bank also has a number of sponsors, including Citizens Bank, which provides “a small army of volunteers.” Last year, the a total of $117,000 was raised. Ironically, Kelly herself has never walked away with a bowl, because she’s so busy organizing. “But my friends come every year,” she says. “Whenever I go to their house, I see their collection of bowls.” Empty Bowls takes place October 17 at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, Cranston. MAD ABOUT Beyond flannel ways to bring the iconic checks into your life By Elyse Major If a season could have a signature pattern, plaid (proper name: tartan) would be autumn’s. While we may think of hipsters and big brands sporting these interlocking stripes – lumberjacks and Burberry, anyone? – plaid actually originated in Scotland as a way to identify one’s region or clan. Today, whether it’s a preppy kilt, punk flannel tied around the waist, or underneath a vest for an outdoorsy look, plaid is loaded with character. Infuse your surroundings with some clever campfire-meets-classic accessories and home goods available from shops around the state:

By Megan Schmit

@justadane

HENRIETTE D. There is something unique about fall in Rhode Island. The forests present a beautiful, mesmerizing, vibrant display of colors that I’ve rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Fall here is soothing to my soul and makes me want to never leave.

@marytheona

MARY VICAN As my love for photography has grown, so has my appreciation for Rhode Island’s shoulder seasons. RI in particular is special due to every town’s relative proximity to the ocean, marrying vistas of colorful foliage with coastal landscapes. I love that I can enjoy forest hiking, wildlife sanctuaries, city museums and history, river rapids, lakes, and vast beaches all in the same day. There are over 150 hiking trails in this tiny state and the mild weather of fall is the perfect time to explore no matter your physical or fitness level – with or without a camera!

@wrossmclendon

ROSS MCLENDON Rhode Island is full of picturesque nature and architecture, and each season gives these a unique context, but many of the scenes I pass as part of my regular routine are most beautiful bathed in the vibrant, warm colors of autumn. It’s exciting in October to follow the progression of color, to watch the trees transform from green to gold and red and brown from day to day, and I find great joy in capturing, preserving, and sharing these fleeting moments. The Showman Trinity Repertory Theatre puts the complicated life of Buddy Cianci onstage for the first time By Robert Isenberg

On the day I took office I knew as much about being mayor as I knew about brain surgery. If I had known then what the job actually required, I wouldn’t have voted for myself. - BUDDY CIANCI, Politics and Pasta

cumbersome subtitle. This is the world premiere that Rhode Islanders have been clamoring for. This is the production that the Boston Globe dubbed “the new Hamilton.” By the time you read these words, the entire run may be sold out. “It’s such a fascinating, captivating story,” says Tyler Dobrowsky, associate artistic director at Trinity Rep. “It’s almost Shakespearean.” “He was, and is, a very divisive figure,” says Taibi Magar, the show’s director. Like a mix of Hamlet and Lear, Cianci made choices that touched on bigger themes. “I hope the audience walks away pondering the larger questions underneath his story: What made him that way? Was he always that way, or is the system engineered for corruption? How did the leading prosecutor of corruption – in his time – become (arguably) the most corrupt politician we have ever had? Also, why did this story happen in Providence? What is the story of this city?” A play about Cianci might have been produced anytime in the past few years, but Trinity had to wait for the film rights to expire, because they were bundled with the theatrical rights. Indeed, Stanton has

Obviously, Buddy Cianci should star in a stage play. Why not? The man did everything else. He spent 21 years in office. He prosecuted gangsters. He hosted his own radio show. He sold marinara sauce. He attended Little League games. He kept multiple mistresses. He sometimes flew around in a helicopter. He rose to unprecedented heights of political power; he was convicted of racketeering; he spent more than four years in “a federally funded gated community.” And on and on. But you know all this – whether you live on the East Side or in Honolulu – because the posthumous Buddy Cianci is even more famous than the living Buddy Cianci. Crimetown, which is basically just a chronicle of Cianci’s breakneck life, has become one of the most successful podcasts of all time. David Mamet, the iconic tough-guy dramatist, allegedly wrote a screenplay about him. And even if you skip Cianci’s own autobiography, Politics and Pasta, you may enjoy Mike Stanton’s 2003 bestseller, The Prince of Providence: The True Story of Buddy Cianci, America’s Most Notorious Mayor, Some Wiseguys, and the Feds. This is the book that Trinity Repertory Theatre now adapted for stage, minus the

reportedly entertained several dramatic adaptations of his book, but none of them ever panned out. Once the rights ran out in 2016, the Trinity staff saw their chance. With Stanton’s blessing, Trinity could bring that story to life, beneath spotlights, in the heart of Cianci’s hometown. But how do you solve a problem like Vincent Cianci, Jr.? How do you turn such an epic life into a play? His career is outsized, too colorful to summarize in two hours. What moments do you pick? How do you paint such a controversial figure, such a prismatic personality? Do you include his military service? Do you mention his last-minute engagement to a model half his age? How much time do you dedicate to the assault charges, and how much to the racketeering trial? Couldn’t his relationship with former mayor Joseph Paolino, both combative and fraternal, become its own miniseries? How do you put an entire urban facelift – the downtown mall and rerouted rivers that Cianci championed – on a single stage, if at all? The answer: very carefully. The first step is to hire a confident playwright. George Brant has penned dozens of scripts, and his last contribution to Trinity, Into the Breeches!, was also a historical drama. Before he settled in New York, Brant lived for a decade in Providence, and he knows the city intimately. Next, you build a story around Cianci’s life, showing major events in chronological order. The first act follows his first term in office, concluding with the brutal interrogation of Raymond DeLeo – by far his most infamous chapter. In the second act, we see Cianci’s return to power, the FBI investigation that brought him down, and the prosecution that (sort of) ended his political career. But you have to finesse the details. At least one character is a composite of two real-life people, and much of the dialogue is imagined. Unlike, say, The Laramie Project, The Prince of Providence is not documentary in nature; the play recreates real people, events, and one liners as dramatic scenes. Despite all the broadcasts, depositions, and hidden cameras, there’s a lot of history that no one recorded, and a playwright like Brant needs to connect the dots on his own. Finally, you anchor the production in a single place. The scenes unfold in several locations: in the mayor’s residence, in a radio booth, in a courthouse, even in a moving car. Yet the main set, designed by Sara Brown, found its inspiration in the Alderman Room, one of the chambers in City Hall. Here, the walls are adorned with portraits of past Providence mayors – perhaps symbolizing the legacy of office. Using “lights and other stage tricks,” the audience will be whisked from one place to the next, but the background is always the stately home of City government. A year ago, Brant brought his script to Trinity to be read aloud. This kind of play is

tricky; its story is based on the exploits of an actual person, and it covers 30 years of local events. But the read-through was a smash. The Trinity staff loved it. “He’s an excellent, excellent writer who’s familiar with Providence,” says Dobrowsky. “Everyone in the room was so impressed with how George was able to tell the story. Everyone was like, ‘This is going to be amazing.’” Retelling these events isn’t easy, but the hardest part about the Cianci story is telling it the right way. Once he was released from prison, the former mayor was fairly open – even good-humored – about his foibles in office. Yet people still love him. To this day, supporters insist that the ends justified the means. Cianci dedicated his life to lifting Providence out of the doldrums. Love him or hate him, there is no way to imagine our capital without his influence. As Judge Ernest Torres put it, at the end of the Operation Plunder Dome trial: “There appear to be two very different Buddy Ciancis. The first is a skilled and charismatic political figure, probably one of the most talented politicians Rhode Island has ever seen. [The other] presided over an administration that is rife with corruption at all levels.”

Trinity has handled delicate topics before: Boots on the Ground told the story of Iraqi war veterans from Rhode Island; the script was based on actual interviews. The America Too series is similarly based on real conversations, dramatizing up-to-the-minute social issues like DACA, race relations, and police conduct. Yet Cianci is a special case. The common refrain is, “Everybody has a Buddy story.” Magar only spent three years in Providence, while a student at Brown, but even she has a story. “The only time I ever encountered him was at The Columbus Day Parade in 2014, as he was campaigning for the election that year,” Magar recalls. “I remember seeing a general hubbub about half a mile down Atwells, and then slowly a crowd gathered around and behind him. It was very cinematic. I remember mostly just finding him mysterious, how could someone be so loved and so hated?” Thanks to Crimetown, millions of people around the world know the intricacies of Cianci’s life, that strange imbalance. From a theatrical standpoint, Brant has tried to humanize Cianci, to explore his many virtues and vices. “We’re not necessarily saying Buddy was a really good guy, but we’re not condemning him, either,” says Dobrowsky. “He was a pugnacious fighter, but also a charismatic person.

There are people who consider him a criminal, but also really like him.” The Trinity staff is expecting a vocal response. The story is close to local hearts – and lest we forget, Cianci passed away only three years ago. As with all Trinity productions, the theater will host a semi-formal talk, Context and Conversation, on October 7 at the Alderman Chambers in City Hall. Hosted by Christina Bevilacqua, Trinity’s “conversationalist in residence,” the series gives any ticket holder the chance to ask questions and hear more about the play. There’s only one downside to producing this play in 2019: Cianci himself isn’t around to see it. If you know the man, you can just picture him socializing in the lobby. You can imagine him waving from his seat on opening night, absorbing applause. What would he think of Scott Aiello, the New York-based actor who will portray him onstage? What would he say of Rebecca Gibel, the actress playing his wife Sheila? The man loved attention, and he knew himself well. When the curtain fell, what zinger would he have offered? “I have been called many things in my career,” Cianci once wrote. “I’ve been ‘America’s most innovative mayor,’ a ‘colorful character,’ and a convicted felon. But no one has ever called me shy.”

FALL FASHION

Providence-based Cleverhood keeps you dry, even on an autumn bike ride The Cleverhood design looks like a cloak or a poncho, and at the same time, there’s nothing quite like it. Each item is sleek, ergonomic, and smartly zippered. Reflective lines are invisible during the day, but they glow urgently at night. The fitted hood is often compared to Sherlock Holmes’ deerstalker cap, shielding the face from drizzle. All versions are unisex – and it’s perfect for fall. “We’re the only business really committed to rain capes,” says Susan Mocarski, founder of Cleverhood, which is headquartered in Federal Hill. “We strive to be outstanding in our field.” Rain storms are common this time of year, and if you like to walk or bike around town, the cape’s smooth surface is designed to wick away excess water. Wear some wool or fleece underneath, and you’ll stay cozy in the gloomiest weather. Cleverhood’s latest design is covered in little boxes and numbers. Look close, and you’ll learn that this “data art” features statistics about U.S. national parks, which Susan and her team feel strongly about preserving. Environmental awareness never looked so cool. EXPLORING • CIDER DONUTS

CIDER DONUT TOUR Around the state with Patty J

Before pumpkin spice everything (first it was lattes and now, you can find candles, body wash, protein powder, and the list goes on…) started marking the arrival of autumn in the Northeast, there were apple cider donuts. The fall treats, fried up cake-style with a taste that’s both sweet and tangy, and usually served plain or with a dusting of cinnamon or powdered sugar on top, have since gone on to garner classic eats status. And you can still find some of the best ones right here in Rhode Island – if you know where to look. So, with that in mind, here are spots you “donut” want to miss out on this season. CONFREDA GREENHOUSES & FARMS, CRANSTON People come from all over for the traditional apple cider donuts at Confreda, and as of a few years ago, they’ve also added apple cider donut slushies. They’ve taken the apple cider donut that everyone loves so much and turned it into an edible garnish for an apple cider-based drink that you’ll find yourself fall-ing for!

APPLELAND ORCHARD, GREENVILLE It’s an autumnal rite of passage around these parts. Yes, I’m talking about taking a ride over to Appleland, where you can immerse yourself in the joys of this time of year: apple picking, apple pies, and made-daily-on-the-premises apple cider donuts (let’s call ‘em, ACDs). And they have these scrumptious goodies available every single day now through the holidays.

MA’S DONUTS AND MORE, MIDDLETOWN If you’re looking for a late-night ACD this season (or a pastry year-round), then it’s gotta be Ma’s in Middletown, which is open 24/7. They are also a fave among the locals for their coffee and custom decorated donut cakes.

YOUNG FAMILY FARM, LITTLE COMPTON A drive through the town of Little Compton is always a delight, no matter the time of year. Add a stop at Young Family Farm for some ACDs this fall (available on the weekends only) and the enjoyment factor gets ramped up exponentially. In other words, yum!

KNIGHT FARM APPLE ORCHARD & FARMER'S OMELETTE BREAKFAST, NORTH SCITUATE I originally discovered the restaurant at Knight Farm on a Sunday morning in late September when I was desperately in search of some breakfast (some might say hangry?) and coffee. While there, I spied plenty of people walking out with brown paper bags full of their freshly made, delish ACDs. Go early and get some for yourself before they sell out!

EXPLORING • HIKING TRAILS

HIKE

Hit the trail, all across the state

There is no better time to hike than autumn in New England. The leaves change. The geese honk their way across the sky. The air is crisp and perfect. All over the world, people see photos of our rambling trails – surrounded by that blaze of red and yellow – and they wish they were here. We have plenty of famous footpaths and multi-use trails, from the Cliff Walk to the East Bay Bike Path. But even lifelong Rhode Islanders don’t know all the rustic routes that await them. There are simply too many parks to compile here, so here are some of our favorite out-of-the-way destinations to break in those new boots.

EXPLORING • HIKING TRAILS

THE CROSS-COUNTRY HIKER The Sakonnet Greenway Trail cuts through the well-developed landscape of Aquidneck Island, including farms, a polo field, and the Newport Rifle Club. Yet you’ll also find swathes of swamp and forest, plus 10 miles of paths and secondary paths to explore. To really appreciate this island’s varied terrain, Sakonnet is an illuminating walk. Middletown and Portsmouth

THE WEEKEND WARRIOR Diamond Hill State Park is a playground for scrambling and mountain biking; you’ll find plenty of boulders and slopes, as well as still water and leafy vistas. Meanwhile, Diamond Hill is a quick drive from Mercy Woods, Handy Pond, and the Blackstone Valley Bike Trail. You could spend an entire weekend hopping from one forested sanctuary to the next, which carpet the land between the capital and the Massachusetts border. Cumberland and Lincoln

THE CHALLENGE-SEEKER Even by Rhode Island standards, Mount Tom Trail doesn’t really scale a mountain, yet this six-mile loop is a dynamic promenade through the Arcadia Management Area. Arcadia is our state’s largest recreational plot, and Mount Tom is a beautiful sample of those 14,000 acres: there are rolling hills, massive boulders, and an elegant bridge over a glassy brook, along with scattered overlooks. Mount Tom is considered a “rigorous” hike, so come prepared. Exeter

THE EXPLORER Ninigret Park is a sprawling park on the southern coast, most famous as the setting for the Frosty Drew Nature Center and Observatory. But there are also playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis and basketball courts. You could spend an entire day exploring this 227-acre landscape. Ninigret has a storied past: until the 1970s, it was home to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station of Charlestown, and the blistered remains of the old airfield can still be seen today. Charlestown

THE ESCAPIST From the trailhead of the George B. Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge, you can see farms and fields. But the paths runs deep into the woods, over hills and streams. Wildlife is a common sight here, as are the mysterious cairns that dot the landscape. The first loop will get your heart rate up, but the longer loop measures seven miles – which could take most of a day. If you like Parker but don’t have time, try Snake Den State Park, a similar refuge in nearby Johnston. Coventry

THE BUSHWHACKER Not many places in Rhode Island can qualify as a “valley,” and certainly none as scenic as Ell Pond Preserve. Located so far west that it’s practically in Connecticut, the preserve is a rare glimpse of near-wilderness. The “kettle hole” pond is ringed with sloped banks and dense trees, and on a misty morning, Ell can feel as isolated as an Alaskan fjord. The ground can be slippery, especially on the rocky parts, but for many hikers, these setbacks are a small price to pay for a slice of sylvan serenity. Hopkinton

The Cheers of Narragansett P

eople who live in Narragansett already know about Twin Willows. In the northern part of town, away from the biggest tourist crowds, is a casual restaurant where people gather to relax and have a great meal, amongst great people. Twin Willows was started by Phil and Pat Durigan; now, Pat and her son David run the business. They’ve got a great selection of shareable apps, burgers and sandwiches, pastas and steaks – plus tons of classic and modern seafood dishes. Their chowder, served in three varieties, always keeps people coming back for more.

Sunday Funday, Every Day Twin Willows is a great place for a family meal, but it’s also a great place to kick back and have some fun. There’s always a game on in the bar area - there are even televisions in the bathrooms so guests won’t miss a minute of the action. The restaurant also hosts live musicians on weekends (when there isn’t a Patriots game, of course.)

South County

Staycations Make the most of off-season deals at these 5 CLOSE-TO-HOME DESTINATIONS By Bob Curley

South County is one of the best beach destinations in New England and like Cape Cod and Newport, only gets better after Labor Day when most of the tourists depart and leave the locals to enjoy the beaches minus the crowds and traffic. Add easy-to-get dinner reservations at even the most popular restaurants and off-season hotel rates, and Fall becomes the best time of year to enjoy a South County “staycation” whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or some quality time by the shore with the kids.

Romantic Rhody

“A lot of people think you have to get in the car and drive out of state to get away, but we’re fortunate that we live in Rhode Island and it’s beautiful,” says South County hotelier John Bellone, owner of the Breezeway Hotel in Misquamicut and the Hotel Maria, a new boutique hotel that opened on the beach last summer. The hotel’s spacious, mid-century inspired decor and laid-back luxury is best captured in the four 4th-floor Seascape Suites, which each have two bedrooms, two baths, a living room and kitchen – maybe more than you need for a romantic getaway, but you can’t beat the ocean views from the spacious balconies. Mediterranean cuisine is served nightly through mid-September at Maria’s Seaside Cafe (and on weekends after that); hotel guests can order room service through the restaurant or make their way downstairs for a leisurely Sunday brunch that features bottomless Bellinis. Offseason rates starting September 2 make Hotel Maria affordable as well as romantic: expect to pay 30-40 percent less than you would in the summer, with rooms starting around $200 nightly. The Break in Point Judith is a boutique hotel with 16 stylish rooms and rooftop bar, Chair 5, with indoor/ outdoor seating and ocean views. It’s also situated within easy biking distance of three of Rhode Island’s best beaches – Narragansett, Scarborough, and Roger Wheeler – making it a delight for an active getaway. And you can pack light: the hotel will lend you bikes and equip you with beach towels and backpack chairs for a day on the sand. Other nearby options for active outings include Fisherman’s Memorial State Park, which hosts a popular Sunday morning farmers market through the end of October, and the fishing village of Galilee with its restaurants, bars, fishing charters, whale watching tours, and the ferry to Block Island. The hotel concierge can arrange for kayak paddles on the Narrow River and surfboard rentals or lessons at Narragansett Beach. When you need a break from the action, The Break has a heated outdoor saltwater swimming pool that’s open year-round and a small spa and fitness room. Starting October 1, Rhode Island residents can get 10 percent off room rates and a $25 food credit for stays on Sunday-Thursday nights; staying two nights earns 20 percent off the second night, three is 30 percent off the third night, and staying four nights gets you 40 percent off the fourth night. Fall in the Family

The Breezeway Resort

Fall is back-to-school time, and while that makes it tough to squeeze in an extended vacation, it’s a great opportunity to reconnect with a family staycation. Misquamicut’s Breezeway Resort has hotel rooms, studios, suites, and a cottage to accommodate families of all sizes, and stays include continental breakfast, WiFi so the kids don’t feel disconnected from their friends, and free loaner bikes that you can use to pedal to the beach (just three blocks away), the Watch Hill lighthouse, and the Atlantic Beach amusement park, which stays open ‘til late October. Rates after September 2 start at $169 nightly. BreezewayResort.com Westerly’s historic Weekapaug Inn has been welcoming families since 1899, and the Relais & Chateaux hotel’s history of refined but kid-friendly hospitality has been enhanced in recent years by a $20 million renovation that included creating more spacious rooms and adding lots of on-resort activities, including a resident naturalist to lead nature hikes, motorboat outings on Quonochontaug Pond, and endless kids’ activities organized by staff at the resort’s boathouse recreation center, including moonlight kayak paddles and seal-watching expeditions. And don’t miss the fall pasta nights at the Inn’s restaurant, with three courses of fresh salad, homemade bread, and pasta served family-style, followed by passed desserts. The resort offers a 10 percent discount on stays in October and November (some blackout dates and restrictions apply). WeekapaugInn.com

Cottage Life

Rhode Island may be a small state, but that doesn’t stop countless urban residents from keeping a summer cottage by the beach in the summer, even if it takes a trip of under an hour to make the transition from work life to vacation mode. If you want to do South County like a local, pack a bag for a weekend at the Point Break Cottages in Misquamicut. Owned by Kevin Finnegan, founder of the Ocean Mist beach bar, the half-dozen cottages are arrayed along the Misquamicut shoreline

and can accommodate two to eight people, depending on the unit. All of the cottages are connected by boardwalks and walkways, says property manager Emily King, so groups traveling together “don’t have to hike down the street — everyone is right there.” Some of the cottages are open year-round, others are seasonal. All have TVs and Wifi,

or get a free pizza from Finnegan’s Matunuck Pizza Pie Co. across the street. “You have a lot around you,” says Emily, who estimates that about half of her guests stay because they want to attend a show at the Ocean Mist (ask about discounted or complimentary tickets), while the rest just come down for a beach getaway. Offseason rates at the Point Break

and all are a short walk from the Ocean Mist, where cottage guests can enjoy live music and the beach bar’s excellent daily breakfast,

Cottages go into effect on October 1, with prices starting as low as $125 per night. PointBreakCottages.com.

HEY RHODY FALL 2019

Westerly’s Ocean House is the pinnacle of luxury lodging in Rhode Island; in fact, this exquisite reimagining of the classic grand New England beach resort consistently ranks among the top hotels in the world. The hotel is an icon of Victorian elegance with wide porches wrapped around the bright yellow-and-white exterior of the main building, which sits behind the sand dunes of Watch Hill. Guest rooms match the early 20th century elegance of the resort, with refined furnishings and cheerful coastal colors; the grand deluxe rooms have private oceanfront terraces and marble baths with soaking tubs. OceanHouseRI.com. Dining options range from informal lunches on the veranda and the oceanside Dune Cottage to multi-course dinners at the AAA 5-Diamond Coast restaurant where you’ll want to dress your best to match the elegant atmosphere. The hotel’s Oh! Spa is a destination unto itself, with 15,000 square feet of indoor space given over to treatment rooms, a pool, fitness center, salon, and classrooms for yoga and other movement sessions. Signature services include couples’ massages in a private suite with a hydrotherapy tub and beach-stone shower. The resort has an extensive calendar of events from art clinics to lobster bakes and boat cruises, and when it’s time to explore, you can borrow one of the resort’s Mercedes-Benz convertibles and hit the road. The Ocean House’s popularity makes deals hard to come by, but room rates do drop off from summer highs in the fall. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, the nearby Watch Hill Inn, a sister property, offers a 15 percent discount for September and October stays; the hotel has just 21 suites, offers in-room dining and spa services, and affords guests access to all of the amenities at the Ocean House. THE GREAT PUMPKIN PIE

Fellini’s sweetens up dinner with its seasonal pizza To make The Great Pumpkin Pie – that is, the pumpkin-style pizza that Fellini’s makes each year – you need all the flavors of fall: cinnamon, brown sugar, honey, and maple syrup. But unlike grandma’s version, this pumpkin pie also uses spinach, mozzarella, gruyère, chevre, bacon, caramelized onions, and hand-tossed dough. Then, of course, there’s the roasted and puréed pumpkin, which make the pizza what it is. Fellini’s has been making far-out pizzas since 1989, using ingredients that span the supermarket aisles. The Great Pumpkin Pie has become a harvest-time tradition, and you can grab your own anytime between Halloween and November. In theory you could make the thin-crust masterpiece in your own kitchen. All we can say is, good luck. Providence and Cranston, FelliniPizzeria.com -Robert Isenberg

SAVORING • DINERS

CLASSIC COMFORTS Embrace the season of nostalgia at some of the most classic diners around the state

In 1872, Walter Scott parked a horse-drawn cart in downtown Providence and sold sandwiches to the newspapermen who worked the overnight shift. Since then, diners have been an integral part of Rhode Island’s food scene. “The way Rhode Islander gives directions – take a left at the old Almacs – you can tell we have attachments to our local businesses, and that includes diners,” says Douglas Stuchel, associate professor at Johnson & Wales’ College of Hospitality Management. “It’s why we continue to visit Del’s and drink coffee milk. It’s why our diners continue to thrive.” While Haven Brothers took the reigns from Scott downtown in 1893, there are vintage diners across the state worth a visit. With chilly fall days perfect for road tripping, plan a food tour starting with five of some of the oldest restored retro eateries in the state. Grab a cup of hot coffee and a plate full of comfort food for your perfect dose of nostalgia.

THE SEAPLANE DINER • PROVIDENCE History: This 1956 O’Mahoney Diner, one of only two in the state, began its life in Woonsocket as Girard’s Diner. In 1973, it relocated near Providence’s port and took its new name from the seaplanes that landed on that stretch of Narragansett Bay. Must Try Dish: While lobster ravioli and shrimp tortellini are not typical diner grub, these lunch specials are filling and delicious.

THE MODERN DINER • PAWTUCKET History: The only J.D. Budkins Co’s Sterling Streamliner currently in operation and the only one entered into the National Register of Historic Places.

Step back to the 1950s inside Seaplane Diner

Must Try Dish: Their Custard French Toast – a happy accident involving an overstock of vanilla pudding – is so delicious, Food Network anointed it the number one diner dish in the country in 2015.

JIGGER’S DINER • EAST GREENWICH History: It began in 1917 as a lunch cart, which was replaced with a car from the Worcester Dining Car Company in 1950. Must Try Dish: Benedict lovers rejoice! There are 11 of them on the menu, including a Johnny Cake and Sausage Benedict that’s gluten-free.

All photography by Savannah Barkely for Hey Rhody Magazine

BISHOP’S 4TH STREET DINER • NEWPORT History: This Newport staple is the second of two O’Mahoney dining cars in Rhode Island and dates back to the early 1950s. Must Try Dish: East Bay-style Johnny Cakes, which are thin and crisp, are a must-order. The turkey for their turkey dinner is roasted in-house, giving it homestyle flavor.

CHAMPS DINER • WOONSOCKET History: This Worcester Lunch Car Company diner was established in 1926 in Park Square. By the 1980s, it sat in a salvage yard in Providence After a full restoration, it reopened in 2015.

Find diner musts like French toast with maple syrup at Seaplane Diner

Must Try Dish: The Salty Sweet, which is two pancakes layered with bacon, Reese’s, and sliced bananas, topped with whipped cream and candied bacon, is worth the trip north.

CALL US RHODE FASHIONED We put a regional spin on this classic cocktail

By Elyse Major & Nick DelGiudice

As the days shorten, we tend to put away the paper parasols and patterned straws and trade drinks that resemble sunsets in a glass for something a little darker and dare we say, dignified. With so many local makers in the mix, we were inspired to create a concoction based on an Old Fashioned recipe and rename it the Rhode Fashioned. Rich and subtle and in the palette of the season, this drink is perfect for making a brisk evening oh-so-cozy.

RECIPE

RHODE FASHIONED INGREDIENTS • 2 ounces of Sons of Liberty Battle Cry American Single Malt Whiskey • 2-4 dashes of King Ramsey Starfruit Bitters • 1 medium to large sugar cube • 1 small peeled orange slice (keep peel for twist) • 1 large fresh cherry • a few dashes of water

DIRECTIONS In a small rocks or old fashioned glass add a large sugar cube, halved and pitted cherry, peeled orange slice, a few splashes of water, and 2-4 drops of Starfruit Bitters. Muddle well until sugar is dissolved (remove the cherry peel after muddling if not broken down). Add 2 ounces of whiskey and one large ice cube to the glass and stir. Twist the citrus peel to release the oils and run it around the rim of the glass, then drop into the cocktail and serve.

FARMSTAND TO TABLE With a long list of items harvesting in fall, eating fresh isn’t just a summer thing

By Elyse Major

Wasn’t it just yesterday that you could channel your inner Ina Garten, visit a farmers market, and let the bright offerings displayed on tables and beneath tents inspire your dinner? Insert record scratch: Autumn is arguably an even better time to do plein air shopping – temperatures are generally lower (although, this is New England, afterall) and while the goods may have changed, there is still plenty of vibrant variety to be had. “Fall is one of the best times to shop at the market,” says Leigh Vincola, Farmers Market Program Manager at Farm Fresh Rhode Island. “The cooler days allow for another crop of tender greens as well as the late season crops like winter squash and root vegetables.” Here’s a bunch of our favorite fall things, beyond pumpkins and apples.

CARROTS This sturdy salad standby is always great as a vehicle for dips and hummus, but carrots are also great for soups. Boiled along with a potato or two, mashed and combined with a few cups of stock, and topped with sprigs of dill, you have yourself a comforting dish.

MUSHROOMS Considered a “superfood” for their nutritional value and benefits, mushrooms are much more than just a pizza topping or vessel for breadcrumbs. Try them sautéed or roasted in butter or olive oil with a few lemon squeezes and herbs like thyme or rosemary, for a savory side dish.

RADISHES Good ol’ radishes are a cool season crop and should be plentiful all autumn long. Sliced, they make a colorful and crunchy addition to salads, but chopped and sauteed in olive oil, they’re a splendid alternative to home fries.

W ENDY B ROWN GREEN ONIONS Call them scallions or spring onions if you’d like, but when chopped, these pretty dark green ribbons add a mild onion flavor, sans tears. Try raw in tuna salad, or cooked with scrambled eggs or tofu.

A Better Way to Repay Student Loans TURNIP Expand your root repertoire by adding turnips to your dinner rotation. Roast as you would potatoes: peel and chop into cubes; toss with olive oil, add salt and ground pepper; then place on a cookie sheet in an oven preheated to 400 degrees for about thirty minutes. Keep those snipped greens to sautĂŠ in olive oil or butter for two side dishes in one veggie!

Outdoor markets run through the end of October and then the Winter Time market begins in November. Visit FarmFreshRI.org for farmers market and farmstand locations and a full schedule.

PUMPKIN SPICE AND EVERYTHING NICE Everyone’s favorite squash finds its way into three inventive Rhode Island beers By Robert Isenberg

Like football and fleece, pumpkin beer is an autumnal rite. A handful of national breweries dominate the market, and most people splurge on, say, the Pumking Imperial Ale from Southern Tier. But before you grab that pricey four-pack, consider one of Rhode Island’s masterful pumpkin-flavored brews. With their imaginative ingredients and clever names, these beers riff on the traditional flavors – and offer a crisp new experience.

Expelled soot from a furnace or boiler malfunction can cover walls, ceilings, cabinets, carpets, furniture, bedding, drapes and everything else in your home with a thin, oily film. DIY attempts to wash away soot with typical cleaning supplies often end up in disaster. Soot cleanup requires the expertise of a professional company like Single Source. We use special techniques and materials to thoroughly clean and deodorize all affected items and surfaces—getting you back to normal FAST.
