The Inclusiveness of One Providence The recently concluded Mayoral contest in Providence was certainly one of the most vigorous and polarizing in the history of our city. The anti-Cianci passion on the East Side was palpable, ultimately reflected in some historic voting results. But were the residents of the two North End wards who voted 65%-35% in favor of the longtime Mayor any less committed? Call us naïve, but we remain convinced that the tears that were shed at the Cianci election night party were no less heartfelt than the euphoric cries of victory by Elorza supporters.

What was more troubling to us about this election, however, was the tone bordering on incivility that developed between the two camps. Clearly the Providence Journal’s over-the-top blending of news and editorial coverage was

a contributing factor. More useful than its almost daily and unrelenting Buddy “convicted two-time felon” bashing, would have been to devote more space to objective comparisons of candidate’s positions on what can be done and how it can be financed if the City is to avoid a Harrop-predicted Armageddon.

But this is in the past tense.

What’s needed now is to rally around Mr. Elorza and support his efforts to reshape Providence. We feel a positive first step has been taken with the generous concession speech by Mr. Cianci and a pledge to help in any way the Mayor-elect thinks appropriate and useful. In an equally gracious response in his victory speech, Mr. Elorza acknowledged that, “one thing about Buddy Cianci is that he loves this city and no one can deny that.”

Our hope is that the rabid supporters on both sides of this race can be equally gracious in the upcoming days. Mr. Elorza’s supporters and organizers here on the East Side can take deserved credit for their role in leading him to victory. How useful if the same passion that was displayed in opposing the return of Buddy III, could now be redirected to provide assets to help our Mayor-elect.

Jorge Elorza inherits a city deeply divided. The supporters of the ex-Mayor, some 40 plus percent of our residents it would appear, aren’t looking for patronage. They are concerned about the direction of the city, especially in regard to city services and finances, over the past decade. It would be an unfortunate mistake if they were excluded in the vision of “One Providence” Mayor-elect Elorza so eloquently describes.

Taking Art to the Streets A continued art initiative uses billboard space as a canvas

In 1974, Providence artist Ruth Dealy had an idea. A founding member of a new artists’ collaborative Loft Horizons, Dealy was looking for a way to bring the experience of enjoying visual art to “as large a group of people as possible.” She happened to read that the owner of Radding Sign Company (now Lamar Advertising) had a strong interest in public art and her idea took hold: Billboards as gallery space.

With donated sign space and free installation services in hand, Loft Horizons secured a small grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and four hand-silk-screened prints were installed on eight billboards in the Providence area. The project received national acclaim. Dealy had always hoped that the project would be repeated and eventually turn into something more permanent. “I tried and tried, but the funding always fell through. It tortured me,” she says.

No more. Artboards RI, a yearlong

project launched in October, will once again showcase the work of local artists on billboards in the Providence area. The focus will be on bringing art into the urban neighborhoods of Providence and Central Falls, where access to art is often limited. By using smaller billboards, targeted to pedestrian and slower automobile traffic, Artboards RI hopes to engage the neighborhoods, especially the youth, in conversations about art.

It is hoped that through the use of print and social media the project will eventually reach beyond the neighborhoods, encouraging even visitors to Providence to seek out the experience of the “urban art gallery.”

The works of Artboards RI’s first three featured artists will remain in place through most of January. Ruth Dealy’s Ground Fog can be seen at 384 Valley Street. Painted in 2003, it reflects on Dealy’s ability to finally “see the fog lifting” following surgery that successfully restored her eyesight. She

hopes others will find it enlightening and encouraging.

Mark Freedman’s NY RT 5 IV can be seen at 221 Allens Avenue. The original painting’s large size fit the format of a billboard, says Freedman, and its subject matter – an urban highway overpass – is appropriate to the Allens Avenue location. Freedman, who likes to paint from memory, is known for his stark (and starkly beautiful) urban scenes.

The third featured artist is AS220 youth artist Wilson Aguilar. His photograph, a stunning juxtaposition of dog, urban rooftop and blue sky, can be seen at 800 Charles Street. His impressive photography portfolio is accessible through AS220’s website.

Every 12 weeks, three new artists will be featured on three different billboards in Providence and Central Falls. Be on the lookout for the works of these artists: Ida Schmulowitz, Robert Dilworth, Angel Quinonez, Entang Wiharso, Chesare DeCredico,

East Siders may easily recognize at least one of the artists, Ida Schmulowitz, by sight if not by name, as she is a somewhat established presence in Fox Point. Schmulowitz has been painting a series of urban landscapes from the same vantage point on the India Point pedestrian bridge (old and new) since 1983. Lot of Concern twelve new houses proposed for the Granoff estate

By Barry Fain East Side residents and other interested parties packed a side room at the Rochambeau Library on October 27 for an informational meeting on a proposal to divide the four-acre Granoff estate, on the corner of Rochambeau Avenue and Blackstone Boulevard, into 12 house lots.

Under the proposed design that will be presented for the approval of the City Planning Commission, the large manor house and a smaller caretaker cottage would remain as is. The issue has the potential to be a divisive one. The Granoff family certainly has a well-deserved reputation for philanthropy in the city. Ironically, the recent addition to the library

where this meeting was held bears their names. Neighbors, however, were not told about the proposed plans until just days before the October City Plan meeting and obviously were concerned about the speed with which the process was progressing. Fortunately that meeting, which allows for public input, was cancelled until mid-November.

Despite its designation as a historically significant area, the lot in question is not part of a legally approved historic district and hence is not protected since the owner is not seeking any variances to existing city zoning. Neighbors pointed

out at the meeting that the Granoffs have expressed willingness to meet with the neighbors to discuss the situation, a fact which their real estate agent, Jim DeRentis from Residential Properties, confirmed.

According to founders of a new neighbor group called the Blackstone Neighborhood Organization, over 100 residents have joined the group to learn more about what may happen next on the site. They hope to voice their concerns about the impact a project of this type would have on the neighborhood. Acknowledging the owner’s legal rights to develop the

property, the group is exploring what options are available to them and how the project might move forward in a manner consistent with the adjoining neighborhood.

For their part, through their agent, the Granoffs have said they do not plan to develop the area themselves but are looking to escape the burden of taxes and upkeep, which according to DeRentis is costing them over $650,000 a year. The property is currently on the market for $5 million.

Hi Neighbor What’s next for East Side marketplace

By Barry Fain We recently had a chance to chat with Scott Laurans, the former owner of Eastside Marketplace and Brian Pacheco, its manager, about what changes we can expect to see at the popular East Side institution after its recent sale to Ahold, the Dutchbased company that also owns, among other things, Stop & Shop. In their words, “hopefully very little.”

Laurans explained that he has a three-year contract with them as an advisor. “I was honored that they looked at our operation and the way it is run and decided we can both learn from each other,” he says. The

expectation is that the loyal staff of 168 full- and part-timers will remain, although some, he suspects, will be offered opportunities for growth within the larger operation.

Though perhaps better known now for his business and philanthropic endeavors – he is the managing director of the R.I office of BNY Melon as well as the current chairman of Lifespan – Laurans actually grew up in the food business. His father and uncle formed Roger Williams Foods in 1945, which grew into one of New England’s largest food wholesalers.

He also feels the store’s continued commitment to both organic produce and popular traditional products will allow the store to retain the unique individuality that resulted in its being frequently selected as one of the most popular supermarkets in the state. “Given the enhanced buying power of Ahold and our continued commitment to serving our local community, things can only get better,” promises Laurans.

While the Democrats were running the table easily in Rhode Island, a Republican tsunami seemed to be engulfing much of the rest of the country. There is some potential good news from this dichotomy though. We received an email from an out-of-state educational lobbyist, who suggested based on the educational focus of Gina Raimondo, Jorge Elorza and Dan McKee, Little Rhody will very likely “become ground zero” for all sorts school funding initiatives in the near future. Maybe the visit by the Obamas and that special “Death

by Chocolate” cake from Gregg’s did the trick.

The Gospel According to the RIBHS A new Holiday musical tradition will be born on Saturday, December 6 at

Summit neighborhood Association Crowd Squashes in at Annual Cook Off More than 50 people crowded into Seven Stars bakery on Hope Street on October 29 for the Summit Neighborhood Association’s fourth annual cooking competition whose unifying ingredient was, appropriately, squash.

There were about 15 different dishes using it and a panel of three experts to judge them. In addition, there was a people’s choice determined by paper balloting by everyone who got to sample the offerings. Prizes were gift certificates to local businesses.

Rounding out the culinary nature of the evening were beer tastings presented by the Berkshire Brewing Co. brought in

by Swan Liquors and olive oil samplings from Olive del Mondo, both Hope Street merchants.

First prize, a $25 certificate to Seven Stars, went to a risotto/orzo dish made by Dan Maclelland. Second, $25 to Olive del Mondo, was for a farro by Meg Griffiths and third, $20 to Kreatelier fabrics, for a triffle by Lexi Dantzig. The people’s choice award was a tie between roasted butternut squash lasagna by Elise Meyer and butternut squash hash by Kim Ahern and Jenna Lafayette, so they each got certificates, one to Frog & Toad gifts and the other to Stock Culinary Goods.

The judges were Jan Faust Dane, of Stock, Peter Kammerer, of The Sandwich Hut, and Sandy Kohring, last year’s firstplace winner.

Recipes for the winning dishes were to be posted on the SNA website.

Next year’s main ingredient is open to suggestion.

Neighborhood Caroling in Planning Stage SNA this year is again attempting to organize Christmas caroling in the neighborhood. Because of early deadlines for the December issue of ESM, details have not been completed, but the plan is to be much the same as last year.

At that time, we started about 5pm on December 22 at Miriam Hospital, which provided hot drinks and cookies.

After singing some non-denominational songs of the season, the group of about 50 people covered Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Streets between Summit Avenue and Hope Street, ending in the parking lot of Seven Stars bakery. Songbooks were provided and participants were urged to bring flashlights.

New Group Opposes Blackstone Condos Plan At the SNA board meeting in October, a group of residents disclosed that a plan had been submitted to the city for the carving up of the historic property at the corner of Blackstone Boulevard and Rochambeau Avenue and the construction of 12 high-density condominiums. Annual Meeting Changes Being Discussed According to the SNA’s bylaws, the annual meeting is to be held in February, but the board is studying amending the rules to avoid convening in the dead of winter. An added incentive would be the safety of the volunteers who deliver the newsletter through snowy streets and up icy steps. Moving the meeting drastically, perhaps to the spring, is probably not feasible for this

year, so a date in January is possible.

Any decision will be announced on the website and by the paper newsletter.

The format will probably be similar to last years, in which a social gathering allowed neighbors to exchange views and set priorities in an informal setting. However, a new board of directors would have to be formally elected.

Blackstone Parks Conservancy

Behind the Scenes on the Boulevard – Getting down to the Nitty Gritty “We have a short window in which to get started between the end of grass growing and when the snow flies,” says Bob McMahon, superintendent of the

Providence Department of Parks and Recreation. On a gusty day in late October that promises rain, with two landscape architects and five Blackstone Parks Conservancy (BPC) volunteers he is inspecting Blackstone Boulevard.

In between mowing and leaf removal – two demanding seasonal tasks – early fall is a good time to focus on pruning, tree-planting and path restoration.

Pivoting to the Boulevard from the 45-acre Blackstone Park Conservation District (BPCD) after the recent completion of a large trail restoration project represents triage of a sort. Ideally, both Blackstone parks would enjoy full-time management, but the stewardship partners are stretched thin.

Over 100 city parks require the department’s attention and the Conservancy is perennially short of volunteers.

There is one saving grace to moving slowly, however: it offers an opportunity to test innovative solutions in small areas, and then to invest in the ones that work. In heavily used parks where humans and nature hold sway, this is an especially helpful approach to the problem of stormwater management challenging the Blackstone parks. The question is, what can best withstand pounding rain and feet?

Fixing Paths The superintendent plans to address the deteriorating center path early next year. He wants to try out a new surface material designed both to stabilize paths and to allow for water absorption in the worst area on the Boulevard, at Lorimer Street.

A novice might wonder why the path can’t be fixed directly, but the landscape architects explained that good drainage must be in place before the path is fixed. Mapping grades are needed first. The possibility of adding a small rain garden to absorb water to the east of the path just north of Irving Avenue was suggested.

The stabilizing material the superintendent wants to test is expensive, and installation is challenging. McMahon says the department will try to get a discount on the material. Apparently, Blithewold Manor has had some installed, so BPC volunteers considered a field trip to inspect it.

Wrapping up the visit, the superintendent said they’ll get going right away on what was discussed today and start with pruning. He asked the landscape architects to get grades and photos of the five or six areas already

Marker Dedicated; Monument Fundraiser Launched Mayor Angel Taveras dedicated the historical marker in Gano Park on November 7 while native American, greenway, historical and neighborhood advocates were joined by city and state elected and governmental officials.

The dedication of the marker, which references the visible Roger Williams Landing Park Monument across Gano Street, also was the kick-off event for another major fundraiser. FPNA’s new goal is to replace the lost 1906 bronze plaques on the monument, which commemorates Williams founding of Rhode Island in 1636, according to Daisy Schnepel, FPNA interim vice president.

“This monument, which sits on what may be the City’s and State’s most historical piece of property, stands across the street naked and mute, with no explanation of its significance,” Schnepel said. “Can we as a city and state allow this omission in our history to stand?”

Schnepel asked.

FPNA member volunteers successfully have researched the plaques’ contents and secured a price estimate of $24,950 to have four of the plaques re-created and cast. “Our membership has already contributed $1,900 to this effort, but we’re still far short of our goal, she continued. “So we’re asking for everyone’s ideas and assistance to correct this gross omission from the

commemoration of our history.”

The centerpiece plaque, which is a relief of Williams being greeted by the Narragansett Indians as he steps onto the slate rock, will be the most costly plaque to re-create and re-cast. FPNA has already submitted some grants to help defray the cost of the expensive project, but is seeking help from city, state and federal sources for information on other possible grants.

The historical marker in Gano Park was produced with an initial $2,500 grant from the Providence/Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Community Relations Fund, a $1,982 grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and another $1,829 contribution from FPNA. If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution to the Roger Williams Monument Fund, you can do so by writing a check to FPNA’s Monument Fund, c/o P.O. Box 603177, Providence, RI 02906.

This restored monument would join the historical marker and new boat launch as some exciting destinations along the Fox Point Greenway, Schenpel said. The greenway, which is anchored by the proposed Blackstone Bike Way and Gano Park, is receiving a great deal of interest. Work on the extension of the Blackstone Bike Way along the Seekonk Shoreline is set to begin next year. It will join the Washington Bridge to the East Bay Bike System and the City of Providence through India Point Park – reaching another benchmark link to the Ocean State’s greenway chain.

For a complete look at the route and proposed destinations, go to www.fpna.net Repairs for Some Fox Point Sidewalks FPNA applauds City Councilman Sam Zurier’s resolution that requests the Department of Public Works, DPW, to report on unrepaired sidewalks in the City. “DPW is preparing a list by ward that should be ready in the next months,” Zurier said, adding that the sidewalks most in need of repair would be targeted first.

Zurier said he saw an earlier version of the list, which graded the sidewalks on their condition and assigned a date on which the repair was requested.

“The version of the list I saw included more than 1,000 sidewalks in poor condition and in need of repair, many of which had request dates going back five years or more,” he said. “Hence, the need for a bond.”

FPNA has long urged sidewalk repair

in Fox Point, particularly east of Governor Street. Now, FPNA requests that DPW give significant priority to neighborhood areas with historic and tourism significance or which are part of developing recreational areas, such as greenways, FPNA Vice President Daisy Schnepel reports.

“Specifically, FPNA encourages special consideration to be given to sidewalks adjacent to the Roger Williams Landing Monument Park on Gano Street; ‘Heater Park,’ at Governor and Williams Streets; and Gano Street, itself,” she adds. “After the extension of the Blackstone Bike Way happens next year, Gano Street will become more of a major gateway into Fox Point and Providence than it already is,” Schnepel said.

“We would like to see all asphalt sidewalks replaced with cement ones, starting with these three areas in Fox Point.”

The sidewalk data is being sought for an “internal auditor report,” on the anticipated availability “of bonding capacity in the range of $10-$20 million.”

This information will be then provided to the Special Committee on Ways and Means, who also will review the City’s bonding position, in general.

“Right now DPW has been focusing on Ives Street – starting at Wickenden and working north, dealing with those areas in ‘most need of repair,’ ” Councilman Seth Yurdin reports. National Grid is paying for these particular repairs, as part of the electrical work being done in Fox Point, Yurdin says.

Yurdin said he would support the sidewalk bond if the City can make the payments and if there are clear standards to prevent discretionary and arbitrary direction of the repairs.

“This is something that has happened with past bond issues in prior years, and we have to avoid it.”

Councilman Seth Yurdin said he has been in touch with the Board of Licenses and Providence Police to review the situation. “We have successfully opposed outdoor events at neighboring establishments when they fail to comply with the noise ordinance and disrupt neighbors,” he added. “I

will continue to push for the same result in this case.

Wayland Square

The main, although not only, topic of our December meeting will be police, crime and safety, with the East Side’s district commander, Lt. John Ryan, and other speakers.

United Way (FM) Building On Monday, October 6, the Zoning Board of Review granted the necessary variances for an entirely new development in the former United Way (or FM Global/Factory Mutual insurance) building on Waterman Street and Wayland Avenue.

The building itself, together with its main entranceway under an “FM” logo, will be renovated but kept largely intact. However the floor at street level will be given over to retail and restaurant uses, sandwiched between two floors of offices.

The two parking levels will be united, with 85 spaces and a single northbound drive-through banking window facing away from Wayland toward the Bliss Building. Entrances to parking and the bank window will be both from Waterman Street (oneway downhill) and Seekonk Street (two-way), but the main exit will be onto Waterman below the traffic lights on Wayland.

How much this will add to congestion or confusion on Waterman Street is unclear to me.

On the main floor, reached either from the main corner or from a stairway up from parking and the sidewalk on the Waterman Street side, will be the main bank offices, a Tex-Mex Southwestern restaurant and perhaps three or four other retail businesses facing onto Waterman Street. There is room for one or two more dining establishments.

Two new covered patios will serve the restaurant on the Wayland side, and the retail business entrances on Waterman.

discussed, which they estimated will take two days. Winter will provide time to plan it out and get suppliers lined up, he added. Depending on when the spring rains end, a tentative rough schedule might be March to late April.

If all goes well, path work can begin six to eight weeks later, sometime in May.

In general, this looks like a very welcome link reuniting two strips of Wayland Avenue, around Pitman Street and around Wayland Square itself at Angell Street.

Blackstone neighborhood organization A plan to subdivide Blackstone Boulevard’s largest private estate has raised concern in the neighborhood.

The land, at 440-460 Rochambeau Avenue, is just north of the boulevard’s intersection with Rochambeau Avenue. Owners Leonard and Paula Granoff have informed the city of their desire to divide the land into 12 lots to be sold for redevelopment as single-family housing.

The planning department has identified no aspects of the proposal that would require the Granoffs to seek variances from zoning. The proposed properties fall within an area designated R-1 for single-family residences, which requires plots of at least 6,000 square feet. The Tuscanstyle mansion would remain, but a Scandinavian-inspired outbuilding and grounds landscaped with low stone walls, statuary and a fountain amid gardens would most likely go to make room for housing. Stone

walls dating from 1849 with elegant portals and gates along Blackstone and Rochambeau would also have to be partially or completely dismantled to provide car access to the new proposed lots.

This is the marquee residential property on a boulevard known for its magnificent abodes. A median park fronting the property was landscaped by Horace Cleveland. Swan Point Cemetery rests north of the Butler Hospital grounds.

This history explains why founders of the recently established Blackstone Neighborhood Organization, with more than 100 members, are concerned by the Granoffs’ plan. Members are not convinced that the proposed lot sizes are in keeping with surrounding properties, that the stone wall should be demolished, as apparently planned, or that more than a minimal number of mature trees should cut down.

The new zoning code taking effect next month will boost the minimum lot size from the current 6,000 up to 7,500 square feet, reducing the number of houses that can be built on the land.

This change and other concerns discussed on Monday, Oct. 27, at a community meeting in the Rochambeau Library hold out hope that the city, worried neighbors and the Granoffs can work together to find a way to subdivide the estate in a manner that protects the values embodied by the beauty of our boulevard.

Like any property owner, the Granoffs have a right to subdivide their property and sell the parcels created, so long as their plan abides by city codes. But property owners also have a duty to exercise the responsible stewardship that ownership entails.

Local history suggests that this is well recognized by the Granoffs. Still, the wealthy owe their local community a deference commensurate with their unusual influence as citizens, and the community is within its rights to urge that respect be paid to both rights and duties. Safety Measures The holiday season is here again!

Please keep safety standards in mind when you are both home and away. Be sure to notify your neighbors if you are leaving town so they can bring in the newspaper, packages and mail, or even park in your lot. Use house alarms, place lights on timers and be sure windows and doors are locked at all times. After opening gifts, place any electronics and pricier items away from direct sight of the windows. Use window treatments effectively during the day and night. Report suspicious activity to the Providence Police Department at 272-1111 and if you see a crime in progress, call 911 immediately.

Ward 3 write-in turn out a key factor in election

There is a definite symmetry to the East Side’s role in the rise and now apparent demise of Buddy Cianci’s political career. When the then 32-year-old prosecutor first ran for Mayor of Providence in 1974, he was elected as an anti-corruption candidate in large part thanks to support from the East Side. Now 40 years later, by voting almost three to one for his opponent, it is the same East Side that has effectively ended the political career of arguably the most colorful as well as most controversial politician the city has ever seen. In the end, Jorge Elorza won by 5,400 votes here on the East Side (Wards 1, 2 and 3) which more than erased the 1,500 vote lead the ex-Mayor had won from the rest of the city. The conventional wisdom was that Buddy needed at least 35% of the vote on the East Side to win. His people actually thought they could do it with 30%. He got 24%. Game. Set. Match.

As it turned out, even 30% on the East Side wouldn’t have been enough.

A lower turn out and the effect of the master level shrunk the size of projected Cianci vote totals on the other side of the city. The Elorza campaign put its dollars and emphasis on getting out the vote, wisely as it turned out, and proved to be competitive in most of the wards, except 4 and 14 in the North End where Cianci garnered almost two-thirds of the voters.

But perhaps the biggest surprise occurred here in Ward 3 (Mt. Hope and a section of the East Side east of Hope).

Going into September, except for the Mayoral primary race, most East Side attention was on two spirited three way races: the gubernatorial contest and the battle for Gordon Fox’s seat. Interest in the city races was almost nil since two of the three East Side councilmen – Sam Zurier in Ward 2 and Kevin Jackson in Ward 3 – had no opponents.

That is, until about four weeks before the general election.

Marcus Mitchell, a businessman and community activist who helped organize and lead the Providence Community Library, suddenly announced for the City Council spot in Ward 3 as a write-in candidate. Traditionally

in Rhode Island, a declaration of this type is akin to tilting at windmills.

After all, Jackson had represented the area for 20 years and is in line to perhaps be the majority leader of the City Council in January. “When he announced he’d be the co-campaign director for Buddy Cianci, that was the final straw,” recalls Karina Wood, who was the co-director of the write-in initiative. “He hasn’t filed a campaign finance report as required by law and has been fined $30,000 for it. In addition, some constituents feel he has been less than accessible.” Joining Wood in leading this effort was Mitchell’s father-in-law Danny Lopes, a former City Councilman of the area himself. Certainly the “Anyone But Buddy” people were there as well.

The results were astounding and clearly contributed to the Buddy’s poor showing in the Ward. Before the write-in effort, it had widely been assumed that Jackson would be able to keep the Cianci numbers competitive. When the votes were tallied, Mitchell out-polled the Councilman in the machine count 1,829 to 1,807. The absentee ballots, however, will be enough to return Jackson to the Council.

“Yes, I was surprised,” admits Jackson. “The new Ward district now encompasses more of traditional East Side compared to the Mt. Hope area, which I feel I have served well. I certainly will try to be responsive to the needs of all my constituents in the future.” The intensity of the campaign resulted in Ward 3 producing almost 4,000 voters, the biggest ward turn out in the city. And almost 80% of the voters came out in support of Elorza.

Lincoln School Lumina Since the 1920s, Lincoln School has put on a glowing community celebration just before winter break.

Over the decades, Lumina has flourished and evolved, crossing the threshold into community tradition. A thousand chairs in Lincoln School’s BossMcloughlin Gymnasium will be filled with faculty, students, and community members on December 19 (snow date December 20 at 9am). The event begins at 1:30pm, when a candlelit procession of the high school’s seniors fill their seats, walking two-by-two, led by handbell ringers. Lumina truly begins, however, when the entire community chimes in to sing “Mistresses and Masters” by candlelight. Holiday lighting twinkles from the ceiling to illuminate where the students, faculty, and staff are seated. Seniors will go on to recite poetry and sing, closing the ceremony with “Peace Round,” over and over rendering the last line of the song, “...lasting peace, lasting peace...” as they process out of the room. Juniors observe carefully as they imagine their own Lumina celebration

This December, attend what is bound to become a new holiday tradition on the East Side. The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society presents Getting Merry Like Christmas, a mix of jazz, gospel and holiday spirit. This first-year event will be held at the RISD Museum, beginning at 1:30pm on December 6. While Robb Dimmick directs, Doreen Murray, a soloist known throughout New England will join talents such as Janell Brown, Drew Parker, Luna Abreu-Santana, and Jose Baez with jazz pianist Rod Luther at keyboard. To Renovate or Evacuate A plea for new ideas to upgrade public schools

Organization meeting at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, I chatted with a fellow parent, a father of a kindergartener who was blown away by how little the building had changed since he was a student there 20 years ago. “I mean,” he exclaimed over and over, “It’s exactly the same. Exactly!”

Citywide, second – and third – generation Providence Public School parents likely share his reaction. Due to the aging and unrenovated condition of the majority of Rhode Island’s school buildings, generations of families can travel back in time. Unfortunately, this means that our children are also doing so every day when they are compelled to go to schools that are unfit for modern technology, often uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe. Children who go to these schools face significant barriers to learning and absorb the message that they don’t deserve better.

In 2011, the Rhode Island General Assembly voted to place a moratorium on reimbursing school districts for the costs of renovating and building new schools, reimbursements that range depending on the property tax base of each district and other factors. The floor for this reimbursement is 35% for the wealthiest districts. As a less wealthy district, Providence qualifies for 80% reimbursement. Though the reimbursement values vary, this is an issue that all municipalities have an interest in. Or they would, if any reimbursements for school improvements were happening.

In July 2014, in response to a report released by a state Senate task force that addressed Rhode Island’s school building finance challenges, the General Assembly voted to extend that moratorium for another year. This means that until at least the middle of 2015, the only school building expenses that the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) can authorize that qualify for reimbursement are those related to students’ immediate health and safety.

Of course, the troubling state of our neighborhood, city and state’s schools isn’t the product of several years of deferred maintenance, though

RIDE estimates that as a result of the moratorium, 600 million dollars that would have been devoted to school buildings and improvements was not spent. A Public Schoolhouse Assessment Report issued by RIDE in 2013 estimates that it would cost nearly 1.8 billion dollars to bring all of the state’s public school buildings up to modern high standards. The price tag for Providence: Over 331 million.

Restarting investment in our school facilities is likely to be an issue that the General Assembly takes up when it goes back into session in 2015. District 6’s State Senator Harold Metts was part of the school housing aid task force, and District 4’s newly elected State Representative Aaron Regunberg has identified the issue as a priority for which he’s looking forward to working with stakeholders.

However, these and other legislators face a pressing question: how can we move forward making reasonable decisions about funding investment in school buildings given such pressing and vast needs?

The 2014 state Senate task force

report includes some savvy recommendations. The report advocates that Rhode Island adopt a systemic school housing needs assessment process, and it strongly urges RIDE to adopt a “pay as you go” model. This would replace the current practice of reimbursing districts upon project completion, which results in paying for financing as well as construction costs, with up to 40% of total costs going to that financing. The report also recommends designating one percent of state sales tax to create a sustainable school construction revenue stream, as well as other alternative funding suggestions.

The report also considers ways to make better use of under-enrolled buildings, suggesting that districts could negotiate agreements to send students in crowded schools to buildings in other districts that have space. Such interdistrict enrollment opens up possibilities that extend beyond making best use of existing facilities. They also make interdistrict professional development, planning and resource sharing possible. While

this regionalization aspect of the recommendations may well be politically tricky, it’s well worth considering in order to maximize resources among smaller districts.

Here in Providence, those who were paying attention to this issue during the previous round of conversations about the City’s master plan for school buildings will recall that consultants strongly recommended that several neighborhood schools, including King, be closed rather than renovated. King survived, remaining a vibrant though aging cornerstone of the Mt. Hope neighborhood. On the plus side for the East Side, Nathan Bishop Middle School was renovated – along with the renovation of Central High School and construction of Providence Career and Technical Academy, it was one of the last pre-moratorium building projects in the city. When Providence adopts a new facilities plan, as the City Council has recently recommended, we will face other tough choices as we move forward on this issue – but move forward we must.

Smart News Hope High School Chosen as Location for New Opportunity

by Design High School In October, the Providence Public Schools announced the sites chosen for its two new Carnegie Opportunity

by Design high schools, which will open with approximately 105 ninthgrade students each in the 2015-16 school year. The development of the schools is funded by a $3 million grant over three years awarded by Carnegie Corporation of New York. The current school year is a planning year, and the soon-to-convene School Design Teams will iron out the schools’ areas of focus and specifics of their operations.

Hope High School is one of the sites, and the other is Mt. Pleasant High School. These schools, which will each grow to 400 students in grades 9-12, will be co-located within Hope and Mt. Pleasant High Schools, sharing certain facilities and spaces. Each will have its own principal and staff and will operating independently. Students from across the city will be assigned to these schools through the same school choice process used for other high schools. The schools will take an approach that is both recuperative, ensuring that students catch up to where they should be in terms of skills and credits, and accelerative, using mastery-based learning to allow students to progress and continually challenge themselves on their way to graduating college and career ready.

Current students at Hope and Mt. Pleasant will not be affected by this change. Each building has adequate space, and the schools’ existing students will remain and enjoy the same access to facilities, classes and supports that they currently have. As the new high schools grow, incoming Hope and Mt. Pleasant classes will gradually become smaller in order to accommodate both schools under the same roof. The co-location will present new opportunities to the host schools. Teachers will be able to share in the new professional development offered to the Opportunity by Design school design leaders and their teams. The district also anticipates that the host schools will benefit from updated technology.

Moses Brown Plans Sailing and Marine Education Center The Moses Brown School announced that it will establish a Sailing and Marine Education Center in Cranston, thanks to a $1.5 million anonymous gift.

The new center, which will be located at the Edgewood Yacht Club, will provide a waterfront classroom for marine education and a home for the school’s championship sailing team, and it will accelerate a school initiative called MB TRIPs – Travel, Research and Immersion Programs. A Liberian refugee is still connected to his country

Emmanuel Logan clicked on his Facebook page for the latest news from his Liberian friends about the Ebola crisis. He was devastated by what he read: Oswald Wiah is dead. “We were very close friends,’’ says Emmanuel. “I admit it.

I cried.’’ The deadly virus has killed more than 4,000 people in West Africa, many in Liberia, where Emmanuel grew up and later fled to escape a horrific civil war that claimed the life of his mother. He’s been living in Providence since 2007.

I visited with him last year as he launched an organization to collect textbooks to send to Liberia, which is so poor many classrooms don’t have books – or just one to share. So far, Emmanuel has collected 25,000 books – and shipped thousands. But now the 34-year-old Providence resident is turning his attention to Ebola, a terrifying disease that he fears could destroy his homeland, already poor with a weak health care system.

“I can’t sit back in America and forget about the people of Liberia,’’ he says. “I need to do this for my country. I’m a patriot. It’s a calling I need to take on.’’

In a few short months, he has raised hundreds of dollars to fight Ebola through his organization, Initiatives for the Development of Educational Advancement, or IDEA. He sends the money to his colleagues in Liberia to buy hand sanitizer, chlorine, gloves and face masks. And, just as important, he’s reaching out to the 15,000 Liberians in Rhode Island, urging them to speak to relatives back home about how important it is to get medical help if they show any symptoms, including a fever.

“We’re trying to step up public awareness about the disease – here and abroad,’’ says Emmanuel. “So many Liberians – and I blame this on the government – don’t know much about the disease, how it’s transmitted or what to do if someone in your family gets it. We want to change that.’’

He says the disease has affected just about every Liberian he knows.

Oswald was a childhood friend and college classmate living in the capital of Monrovia, where most are dying. The 33-year-old got the disease while caring for his sister, who also died. She got the illness when she shared a crowded taxi with someone who was sick. “The Ebola spread so fast in their family,’’ says Emmanuel.

“Seven people dead in a few days.’’

Emmanuel’s friend, Sundagar, a popular musician, was spared, but his wife, son and mother-in-law died. Sundagar lived, only because he was in Ghana performing for a few months. “His entire family was wiped out,’’ says Emmanuel. “People are dying on the street. It’s horrible.’’

Thankfully, Emmanuel’s three sisters and four brothers still living in Liberia have not gotten sick. They live in Buchanan, 90 miles from Monrovia.

Emmanuel is no stranger to heartache. When he was a boy rebels broke into his parents’ house and dragged his mother away. She had been an outspoken opponent of the ruthless warlord Charles Taylor for recruiting boys to kill in a 14-year civil war that ravaged the country.

Emmanuel never saw her again. She was raped, tortured and murdered.

After living in a refugee camp, he came to Rhode Island. His mother’s killing could have crushed him, but it didn’t. He got his college degree at the University of Rhode Island and found good work in a group home. At first, his passion was collecting textbooks for Liberia; now stopping the spread of Ebola is his mission. One day, he’d like to return to Liberia to run for political office. “The government is corrupt – and incompetent,’’ he says. “We need a new start.’’

The international community, he says, needs to send health care workers and American military personnel to build treatment centers. Liberia is too impoverished to combat Ebola on its own. The economy is in shambles, schools are closed and health care facilities are not equipped to handle the growing number of cases. Emmanuel’s brother, Dr. Gobee Logan, is treating Ebola patients in Monrovia. “I pray for him every day, every night,’’ says Emmanuel. “He’s a hero to me.’’

Providence finally gets a piece of the pie

By Grace Lentini Daniel Sheehan grew up in Connecticut and went to school at Roger Williams University to pursue a degree in architecture, but ultimately decided to try his hands at baking. After working for various bakeries, he set out on his own and created the Humble Pie Company.

We talked about flaky pastries, funky fillings and pie-based dinosaur names.

Do you have any special memories of pie from your childhood?

My grandmother used to make a lot of pies. I didn’t really eat her pie until I was older and started to enjoy it. I have one of my grandmother’s pie pans. It’s an old aluminum pan that’s completely unadorned, but what it does have are marks from where countless pies have been cut. The marks are just radiating out from the center of the pan.

What was your grandmother’s pie of choice?

Apple was really her pie. I slice my apples the same way my grandmother did: really, really thin. It’s totally textural. It’s somewhere between soft and hard. I want the apples to just be barely holding themselves together when the pie comes out of the oven.

They should be ready to break down but still have a little firmness or crunch to them.

When did you start selling your creations?

I started selling at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market last year. If I was going to start a pie business, I wanted to experience a holiday at a small scale. So starting with the Pawtucket Farmers Market on November 2, I had a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving to see if this idea would be a viable business. I capped it at 100 pies. I only wanted to do 50 pies, but people kept wanting to order.

Tell me a bit about the kind of pies you offer.

They change with the season. For the fall we’re going to be bringing back

the pies we had last year: roasted pumpkin, parsnip, maple pecan and Dutch apple.

A parsnip pie?

It’s actually sweet. It’s a parsnip custard that’s flavored with cardamom and honey.

Do you make different crusts?

I do a few different crusts. Each pie has its own crust that works with it.

And my goal, when I hopefully find the time, is to expand the crust line to include a gluten-free and vegan crust. If a certain pie flavor lends itself to being gluten-free, I’ll make it gluten-free.

We did a Linzor torte last Christmas that was gluten-free because it has a nut-based crust with raspberry jam inside. And that makes sense because it is traditionally made without wheat products. Our traditional crust is really flaky. That’s what you’ll see most of the time. We had a rye and hazelnut crust that we used in a maple s’more pie that was around in the springtime. We make a pate sucre crust too. It’s like a shortbread cookie crust that’s really nice with a lemon tart and chocolate tart over the winter.

Are there any new recipes you’re working on?

Well, Italian plums will be coming out soon and I’ll be making them with an almond cream base. Plum and almond are a not-so-secret combination of flavors but I really love it. Many people haven’t had plums cooked or in a baked good. So, I’m excited to gauge people’s reaction to that.

What are some of your favorite pies?

I probably ate the most out of the chocolate tart that we had last winter. The chocolate tart uses chocolate from Omanhene Cocoa Company in Ghana. It’s a company that was founded by Steven Wallace, a Brown graduate. And it’s really good chocolate, that’s the best part about it.

80% dark chocolate – both of which go into the chocolate tart. And that’s with a pate sucre crust. It’s a very simple custard, nothing fancy about the top. Just dark and smooth and surprisingly light tasting.

How much pastry do you prepare and sell each week?

We are selling 40-50 whole pies and 500 mini pies – it’s a bunch of pie. We sell at farmers markets predominantly, The Shop in Fox Point, New Harvest and we just started carrying whole pies at Sunset Orchards.

Are there some pies you only bake in a mini?

There was a ricotta herb pie that I did in the spring that was savory. That really did lend itself to a mini – it would be a lot of cheese for one pie.

Are you able to source locally?

I try to source as local as I can. There are things like flour and butter that are very hard to source locally. All the fillings of our pies we source locally. The blueberries are from Shartner Farms, the peaches are from Dame Orchards, our apples are coming from Steere Orchard in Greenville. We also work with Sunset Orchards and Hill Orchards.

Our dairy products, milk and cream, come from Wright’s Dairy Farm.

Do you ever not think of pie?

I’m really into pie-based dinosaur names like Pierodactyl and Pieceretops. That’s all I can think of right now.

Harry, along with his father and sister worked on decorating the interior, and did so with a haul from the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts.

Like most antique show attendees, I’m sure he didn’t go in thinking “Indonesian Wedding Hall Chairs” but that’s what he got, along with mirrors from an old iron works in New York City, with beautiful hammered copper frames and a wooden barn door. The new location also has a shuffleboard, which is what you’re ready to play as a drinking game, now that you’re too urbane for ping pong balls and swill.

They also had the opportunity of making operations a little easier and service a little quicker with far more storage. With more bar and less dining room, you’ll be able to get to your craft brew faster. good things come in pairs. While they offer dogs and other sandwiches, those in line on North Main on a WaterFire night are mostly there for burgers with their beer, two sliders at a time. Eyeing those lines, their brisk business, and the plaudits they’ve won since opening, it’s understandable Harry’s would be looking to duplicate that success. The newly opened Harry’s on Federal Hill sets out to do just that.

Part owner, general manager and namesake Harrison Elkhay is no stranger to restaurant openings. His father’s company, the Chow Fun Group, has several successful restaurants in the state. Normally their experience building on existing restaurants has involved reevaluating concepts that aren’t as successful as they liked, and finding the right new direction and concept. This is very different. With Harry’s, it’s a matter of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Harrison said that Federal Hill was the natural choice for their second location. In addition to the vibrant community and food culture already in play, he felt there was “nothing like Harry’s in the area.” When a prime spot at 301 Atwells presented itself, they jumped on the opportunity. Conscious of the formula that worked so well at the original, the new location has the same capacity: just shy of 50.

According to Harry, and at the risk of making him sound like he’s one of those people who speaks in the third person, “Harry’s is about delivering quality in a fast, easy spot and this means both a smaller, intimate space with a small kitchen where it’s easy to be efficient.” If you tried to graft the same concept to a larger space, “it would lose the appeal.”

This is no franchise though. They want everything people like about Harry’s, but they don’t want a clone.

While the menu is mostly the same, they will have offerings unavailable at the other location, and in a nod to the neighborhood, currently they are playing around with putting a meatball sandwich, chicken parm and even a ravioli slider into rotation in the future. The interior of the new place is a little warmer with a lot more wood, and while it’s still 100% Hereford beef

Also, choose simple, easy-to-read type styles and avoid those that are ornamental or in script.

Consult with an Expert: New digital color printing technology has created new materials and techniques for producing large format. Your print professional will make your decisions easy: How long will your piece be used? Inside or outside? Budget?

Determining where the piece will be displayed and length of use helps dictate the material on which it will be printed. Outdoor banners are almost always created on vinyl and signs adhered to painted plywood, coroplast or aluminum.

Indoor signs can be mounted on gator board for short-term use. Other considerations like sun or light exposure can dictate the best printing process and substrate. Also, consider canvas, silk and backlighting to maximize impact.

“About seven years ago, my oldest son developed severe back issues.

He was 27 years old at that time. It was a complex situation stemming from genetic structural issues to trauma from HS football and auto accidents. It was a terrible time for him and for us. He was in excruciating pain around the clock. He could not sit or lie down which meant he got no relief, no sleep. We went from physician to physician looking for answers. We tried orthopedic surgeons, another chiropractor, a neurologist, a neurosurgeon and physical therapy. Nothing helped. There appeared to be no answers. We thought his life was over. No one could live indefinitely with the pain he was experiencing.

He was out of work for almost two years. Finally, someone recommended Dr. Tom. We were skeptical since we felt the original chiropractor did more harm than good, but we were desperate.

At his first visit Dr. Tom determined that he had a pelvic abnormality causing one leg to be shorter than the other. Dr. Tom provided my son with a lift in his shoe. It helped. Such a simple thing… why had no one else realized this?

Dr. Tom also diagnosed several other contributing factors. My son began treatment. At first he saw Dr. Tom daily. It was painful, but neither Tom nor my son gave up. It took a while to make significant progress. There were times when we wanted to give up but Dr. Tom assured us that he could alleviate most if not all of the pain. That was five years ago. It worked. Today my son is pain free most of the time. He was married in June to his beautiful Cristina!

He returns to Dr. Tom for a “tune up” every few months. It’s a miracle! Dr. Tom gave my son’s life back to him and to us.

Subsequently, my other two boys had similar problems but not to the extent of their oldest brother. Dr. Tom has helped both of them and many other friends/relatives of our family. It’s not uncommon to meet a member or friend of the “The Ryan Clan” at Dr. Toms, including the “mom.”

Clayton Roth, Owner of Canine Cardio of Rhode Island, Runs Dogs into Zen-Like Bliss

A dog lover before he took up running, Clayton Roth discovered that long runs with his young Black Lab, Lucy, was the perfect remedy for her hyperactivity. After research, planning and practice runs with friends’ dogs, he opened his dog-running/ walking/sitting business, Canine Cardio of Rhode Island, in 2012. You can spot him any given day running with the pack on the East Side.

Do you have any favorite breeds?

What makes someone a favorite client?

I run with Border Collies, [they] have tons of energy. Black Labs and Rhodesian Ridgebacks are fun and I walk a Mastiff – a 160-pound ‘big boy.’

What are some pet (pun intended) peeves?

On Blackstone Boulevard there are really fast drivers who think it’s a two-lane road; you never see a cop over there. At crosswalks… a line of ten cars driving and no one stops [for a pedestrian]. Isn’t it state law?

And dog owners who are on their cell phones and not paying attention or have their dogs off-leash.

Do you have any favorite East Side running venues?

I do quite a few runs on Blackstone Boulevard [where] I love people watching. I see familiar faces [who

are] quite the cast of characters. The field behind the JCC is nice to chase balls. Basically, all the open fields are good. I mostly run around the neighborhoods where most of my clients live. There are quite a few dogs that I walk on Benefit Street. I like walking in that neighborhood – it’s historic with big homes.
