HER-story in the Making?

Nellie Gorbea last month, it’s clear that even in a state as socially traditional as Rhode Island, women continue to move up the local political food chain. If successful in November, Raimondo would become our state’s first female governor. Gorbea, if elected, would be R.I.’s first Hispanic state officer of either gender. Not that it was easy. The two Democrats survived hard fought battles against well-financed and organized opponents to prevail.

As for women in other power positions, Elizabeth Roberts is moving on after two terms as Lt. Governor but Theresa Paiva-Weed will continue to serve as the first female president of the State Senate. Plus at almost 27% of the total, women are slightly better represented in the Rhode Island General Assembly than the national average (24%).

But while it’s easy to congratulate local Democrats, it’s also easy to forget that it was the Republicans here who once had hoped women would help them create two party competition in the Ocean State. Republicans not only trotted out viable female candidates back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, but ones who could campaign: Lila Sapinsley, Arlene Violet, Barbara Leonard, Claudine Schneider, Susan Farmer. Winners all.

Yet somehow the new trajectory stalled out and the Republican initiative never gained the hoped for traction. Now it appears it’s the Democrats who are tapping into the power of gender politics. Already having identified the rapidly expanding Hispanic and youth constituencies, Rhode Island Democrats are beginning to specifically target women voters as well. And with Hillary poised to potentially make a run for the presidency in 2016, it’s likely

True, solid Republican candidates do occasionally emerge...

East Sider Catherine Taylor was among last month’s winners as well and promises to be a strong candidate for the Lt. Governor position in November.

But rather than reflect on why the Republicans were unable to continue their once enviable record in recruiting successful female candidates, it’s more interesting to acknowledge the increasing success of women in the political arenas of both parties.

The old boy network of insiders is clearly under attack. It just seems to be now coming from a different direction. Whether it’s gender, ethnicity or age, here’s hoping the primary results signal a more diverse response to the reality of our increasingly complex and interwoven society.

Know A Neighbor Linda newton uses her retirement to work for the community good

When East Sider Linda Newton, who grew up in Washington, D.C., first moved to Providence in 1974, she did not know much about the city or its neighborhoods. She had just graduated from Tufts University with a degree in English Literature, had landed a job teaching 4th grade at St. Pius Elementary School and her husband, Charles, was going to resume his studies at Providence College. Four decades later, there is probably not much about the city or its neighborhoods that Linda does not know.

Linda is a person who “has always been busy,” as she puts it, and with Linda one thing inevitably leads to another.

Take her very first bit of volunteer work in Providence way back when. Her two young children were attending the Mt. Hope Day Care Center (now run by the Y), when Linda saw a need to broaden parental involvement at the center. She started a Parent Teacher Organization, first serving as the parent representative on the board and then, inevitably, staying on as a regular board member. “That is where it all started,” she says of her volunteer work.

Linda’s professional career, almost entirely with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, evolved along that same path of finding ways to expand community involvement. She started with Blue Cross in 1977 working the phones as a customer service representative. When she retired in 2011, she had attained the position of Vice President of Community Relations and Diversity.

“Blue Cross is unique,” Linda contends.

“It is a big company, but it only operates in Rhode Island.” As the state’s demographics changed, she says, it was important for the company to reflect the needs of a much more diverse customer base. “I really had a chance to start a lot of things from scratch. I guess that must be what I am good at, because they had me do it multiple times.” Just two examples: in 2001 Linda established and then managed the BlueAngel Community

Outreach Program, which oversees the company’s employee volunteerism, grant and charitable giving programs; and in 2005 Linda established an endowed fund at the Rhode Island Foundation – the BCBSRI Community Health Fund, which supports many non-profits, including the Rhode Island Free Clinic, Clinica Esperanza and Farm Fresh RI with grants to help provide better health care access for all Rhode Islanders.

Linda has served on many boards, the National Board of the American Lung Association and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence, to name just two. She has received numerous awards for her community work, most recently United Way’s John H. Chafee Lifetime Service Award.

She was Governor DiPrete’s appointment to the very first Ethics Commission, serving as chair for about three years. She also chaired the Rhode Island Commission on Women during Governor Carcieri’s administration.

Asked if she is going to continue to look for these kinds of personal challenges during retirement, or “kick back” and relax, Linda could only laugh. “Probably a little bit of both.” She currently co-chairs the Black Philanthropy Initiative, and is on the boards of the Rhode Island Food Bank, Kids Count and The Rhode Island Council of Churches.

In anticipation of “retiring,” Linda began two new endeavors. She re-established the non-profit, Diversity and Inclusion Professionals. She is DAIP’s president and main volunteer staff person. “I do a lot of work for that organization to elevate the discussion about diversity and inclusion state-wide.” Linda also started a consulting business, Newton & Newton, to help businesses strategize around the concept that diversity and inclusion can support business objectives and contribute to the bottom line. Clients have included Providence’s Lifelong Learning Collaborative, the Pawtucket Credit Union and, of course, BCBSRI. Believe it or not, Linda has actually done a few things more in keeping with

a traditional concept of retirement. This summer she took her 11-year-old granddaughter on a two-week trip to Italy, and in August she took time to visit extended family in Maryland. She says she sets aside Mondays and Fridays for herself – getting more into cooking and catching up on her gardening skills. The gardening skills are evident on her beautiful deck and well-tended yard at her Mt. Hope home, the neighborhood she and her family have lived in since 1976.

In typical fashion, Linda assesses the East Side and Mt. Hope, specifically, in terms of community. She is not a fan of the signs identifying different East Side neighborhoods (College Hill, Mt. Hope, Summit, etc.). “When I first moved here, there weren’t those kinds

of distinctions. The signs just serve to separate what I think of as a great, diverse community, and that was one of the things that attracted me from the beginning. You have some of the wealthiest and some of the poorest.

You see the Jewish families walking on Saturdays, and there is a great Cape Verdean community here. It just has everything. And it also has a great sort of core middle class that you don’t find anywhere else.” Mt. Hope, she feels, is now associated with the negative, “as opposed to, you know, being part of this really rich and diverse area.”

Hmm. There might be some truth to this. Will anyone seize an opportunity to expand the concept of community on the East Side?

Wayland Square Bounces Back From Burst Pipes The building that houses Butterfield, Wendy Brown Home, Reliable Gold and The Walking Company has had a horrible September, the result of an unfortunate water pipe break in the ceiling that flooded the four tenants in the building. Apparently the worst damage occurred in Wendy Brown Home and Reliable Gold. The bad news is that the stores will be out of commission for several weeks if not months. The good news is that they all expect to be back in time for the holidays with November 1 as a target date. In an attempt to attract younger members and supporters to their wonderful library, the Athenaeum on Benefit Street is launching an exciting new initiative aimed at the under 50 set. Called “The Contemporaries,” the program hopes to create what they describe as “an inspired group of like-minded individuals in their 20s, 30s and 40s who actively seek and revel in intellectual simulation, invigorating conversation and dynamic social experiences.” Pretty heady stuff, say we. Their kick-off soiree will be held at the Dean Hotel on October 16 from 6-8pm. You’ll get a tour of the hip new downtown hotel along with some bites and nibbles. So what better place that the southern tip of Blackstone Boulevard, near Lincoln School and where the people congregate to begin their walks and runs up through the park. Unfortunately the decision produced a counter response that felt strongly that there were better places to put the box. The debate has been raging on Cheryl Simmons’ listserv and has produced quite a bit of heat. As we go to press, we understand that the box has been moved to the driveway behind Nathan Bishop which hopefully will tone down the heated rhetoric. We still like the idea though and would hate to see it abandoned.

In Celebration of Ten Great Years One of the City’s often-overlooked success stories is the wonderful work PASA (the Providence After School Alliance) has been doing with and for young people in the city of Providence. Our own Nathan Bishop is one of the city’s leaders in offering after school programs to challenge and enrich middle school students after the traditional classes end. Over the past decade, PASA has served over

10,000 middle and high school youth and allowed them to do things like sail the bay, build solar-powered go carts, code websites and win debate tournaments.

And to celebrate, PASA will be holding a birthday bash on Thursday, October 23 at the Providence Public Library on Empire Street, downtown. Addition of Progressive Politics to Cinderella: a Slipper-y Slope?

Cinderella, the successful Broadway revival from last year, will launch its new national tour at PPAC from October 10 through the 18th. It retains all the Rodgers & Hammerstein songs from the late ‘50s in a show that that The New York Times noted wants to be both “reassuringly old-fashioned and refreshingly irreverent, sentimental and snarky, sincere and ironic, all at once.”

Instead of whispering sweet nothings

in her prince’s ear, for example, our updated Cinderella warns him instead that he needs to keep his eyes open to see what was really happening in his kingdom. (The same Times reviewer drolly suggested perhaps she should be renamed “Che-erella.”) But like other great Broadway classics, the play has garnered good reviews, and happily still boasts wonderful songs, costuming and choreography that remain crowd pleasers almost 50 years since its inception.

Summit neighborhood Association Fifth Annual Summit Music Festival Attracts Hundreds to Lippitt Park More than 800 people, plus six hot bands, played in the park Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Fifth Annual Summit Music Festival.

The personal project of Summit Neighborhood Association President Dean Weinberg, who put in countless hours to put it together, the free musical extravaganza held in Lippitt Park also included a 40-foot-by-8-foot art wall, face painting and other activities for children, a beer and wine garden from Trinity Brewhouse for adults, plus a long string of craft vendors and a vast collection of food trucks and carts that supplemented the park’s playground, fountain, hummingbird habitat and expanses of green open space.

The weekly Hope Street Farmers’ Market in the morning contributed to the festive atmosphere, as many people stayed for the music that started at 1pm and went until just after 6pm.

After a welcome to the crowd by master of ceremonies Weinberg, Dr. Jones and the Shiners, a Providencebased folk-rock band led by Kate Jones, opened the show. The band represents a sort of folk supergroup for Providence, featuring members of The Sugar Honey Iced Tea, The Mighty Good Boys and Moga. Bassist Ollie Williams is also a member of Smith&Weeden, which played later in the day.

Next was the first of two appearances by 16-year-old singer-songwriter Emeline Easton, who was a sensation at last year’s festival. Easton worked through a few tunes, including originals and a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.”

The audience’s response to Easton last year all but demanded she be asked back this year, and she delivered two sets worthy of that praise.

Following her was another Providence band with promise, Smith&Weeden.

Members Jesse Emmanuel Smith, Seamus Weeden, Ollie Williams and Dylan Sevey ripped through a set featuring tracks from their newly released, self-

titled album. They had the crowd on their feet with fists in the air as they performed their versions of gritty Americana bar rock.

As the stage was reconfigured, East Side piano teacher Johnny Lingo led a variety of duets with three of his students, including Summit resident Amelia Gold.

Then from Tampa, FL, came the Selwyn Birchwood Band. Selwyn Birchwood is a young electric blues guitarist who has been sweeping up awards all over the world in the last two years.

The quartet of seasoned bluesmen proceeded to rain a powerful and electric set over Lippitt Park.

The top-billed attraction for the day, Red Baraat, a unique blend of Indian percussion, brass and funk from Brooklyn, then took the stage and immediately brought listeners to their feet.

And the crowd, nearly 1,000 strong by this point, remained on its feet for the 75-minute balance of the event. Having last performed in Providence when they headlined the FirstWorks Festival two years ago, Red Baraat has only gotten tighter and more energetic.

Earlier, HealthSourceRI, the official health-care insurance exchange for Rhode Island and the festival’s biggest sponsor, made an appeal to the crowd to use the portal to get coverage under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

The other sponsors were Empire Guitars, Seven Stars Bakery, Mortgage Network, Sandwich Hut, The Rhode Guide Real Estate Co., Daniele Foods, Kreatelier, Frog & Toad, The Camera Werks, Hope Street Merchants Association, Hope Street Farmers Market Association and the City of Providence.

North Main Merchants Plan ‘Branding’ The North Main Street Merchants Association met in August to develop a plan to boost public awareness of the offerings of the commercial corridor.

Assembled on the patio of leader Peter Kammerer’s The Sandwich Hut on North Main, the group discussed various plans to “brand” the local segment of the long street, noting that historically it may be the first “street” in America as it linked the head of Narragansett Bay with the waterfall in what is now Pawtucket.

The brainstorming centered on using banners, signs and public amenities such as trash cans and benches with a common logo to promote identity. Subsequent exchanges via email at north-main-merchants@googlegroups. com focused on forming “gateways”

Fox Point neighborhood Association

FPNA Installs Gano Park Marker The Fox Point Neighborhood Association, FPNA, has completed the installation of an historical marker at Gano Park with the assistance of a $1,982 grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and an initial $2,500 from the Providence/Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Community Relations Fund.

FPNA also contributed $1,000 for research and development of a factbased script on the history of the park and another $829.70 to complete the granite installation. FPNA Board Member and Committee Chair John Rousseau served as project manager, while Graphic Designer Paul Carter, who also is a board member, donated his time and skills as an in-kind contribution.

Katherine Cavanaugh, a local historian, wrote the script. Ms. Cavanaugh’s

story time-travels back to 1636 when Roger Williams and several companions crossed the Seekonk River to be greeted by some Narragansett Indians saying, “What Cheer Netop!”

The marker also references the Roger Williams Landing Park Monument, which is visible across Gano Street. That site marks the location of the lost slate rock, which was the actual debarkation point where Williams first stepped onto Rhode Island soil. Over the next 378 years, the area’s history is traced from farmland to an 1878 landfill project, which created Gano Street and the surrounding street grid. Into the early 20th Century, the location was home to Narragansett Bay Oyster Company before the City of Providence purchased it in 1949 for recreational purposes.

The marker, which was fabricated

by Fossil Industries of Deerpark, NY, was installed by Charles Pare’ with Environmental Consulting of Westwood, Massachusetts. He was assisted by personnel with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, RIDOT and the Providence Department of Parks & Recreation, DPR. The two governmental agencies worked together to ensure that the marker’s elevation levels would be accurately raised to accommodate the proposed Blackstone Bike Way. Completion of the Gano Park Boat Launch this year and the expected finishing point of the bike way in 2016, has increased interest in a coordinated development of what the City has named the Fox Point Greenway. RIDOT’s design for the extension of the Blackstone Bike Way is about 30% complete.

DPD Hosts Stakeholders Meeting The Providence Department of Planning and Development, DPD, at the encouragement of the Councilman Seth Yurdin’s Office, is hosting a “stakeholders meeting” on the shoreline’s development in September. The goal of the meeting, which was proposed by RIDOT Chief Engineer Lambri Zerva, is to create the best possible outcome for the greenway through the cooperation of City and State governmental agencies.

DPD Principal Planner David Everett agrees. “There are several potential destinations and challenges along the bike way that need to be explored if this greenway is to be a success,” Everett said. Recommendations from this meeting will be presented for public comment at the

FPNA Seekonk Shoreline Initiative at Gano Park began in 2010 when the first of four Earth Day Clean Ups, was held. The cleanups removed highstanding weeds and debris from illegal dumping along the shoreline to restore a view of the river. The Department of Environmental Management and DPR, assisted by Councilman Seth Yurdin’s Office, co-sponsored the events.

There also were two additional clean ups conducted by volunteers with Simulia Corporation, who constructed and stained six FPNA-donated picnic tables, removed 17 fence posts, trash and several fallen trees along the shoreline at Gano Park.

Late Night Student Noise Erupts A very loud, late-night party that encompassed all three floors and the backyard of a very large apartment house in Fox Point over the Labor Day weekend has FPNA reaching out again to off-campus housing officials at local universities.

At press time, it was not known if the students attended Brown, RISD or Johnson & Wales University. The resident reported that “music blared all over the neighborhood and there were many loud revelers.” Another neighbor said the students ignored his request to quiet down. The Providence Police arrived at 12:15am, broke up the party and sent everyone home.

Brown is arranging a time to meet with FPNA, law enforcement and university officials “to discuss strategies going forward,” according to Dean Richard Bova. “Brown has created a new position to specifically work with off campus residents regarding these types of issues, as well as education regarding being a good citizen,” Dean Bova reported. The new contact person is Kate Tompkins, Associate Director for Off Campus Living and Programs, who can be reached at kate_tompkins@brown.edu or 863-6038.

“FPNA has worked with Dean Bova over the years, according to Daisy Schnepel, FPNA vice president. “He has developed a system for identifying student violators of their noise policy and then taking appropriate action to intervene,” Schnepel says. “It has been getting better, but it is a new batch of students every year.”

hot spot for problems with noise disturbance. The resident also reported being awakened again at 12:15am, by a group of about 15 students, who congregated in front of Perkins Hall on Power Street. The resident reported the studends “sassed and mocked” him and continued to talk more loudly when he asked them to quiet down.

WAMA Discusses Pronk Fest Participation President Vincent Scorziello of the Wickenden Area Merchant’s Association, WAMA, met with organizers of this year’s Pronkfest Parade, which will pass down Wickenden Street, from the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School and ending at the Hot Club, 575 Water Street.

The parade will begin at 5pm, on Columbus Day, Monday, October 13. Other Pronk events at India Point Park also are being planned prior to the parade.

“We’re exploring ways that we might get more involved in the event this year and in forthcoming years,” Scorziello says. “Since it’s coming up soon, we are considering closing the street for a longer period of time to allow merchants and restaurants the option of selling their wares in front of their stores.”

Blackstone Parks Conservancy People To Depend On After a busy spring and summer focusing

on the woods, the Blackstone Parks Conservancy is pivoting back to the Boulevard in anticipation of the snow and ice that bedevil the center path much loved by runners and walkers. In August and September especially, the gardens needed tending; the South garden required removing weeds and bedraggled plants and installing new ones, a project made possible by a $1,500 grant from RI Senator Donna Nesselbush.

Fortunately for both parks, several volunteers, some new, stepped forward just when they were most needed. A call for help for the crabgrass-beset Trolley Shelter garden drew three experienced gardeners: Pam Lietar, Cynthia Bertozzi, and Peg McGowan.

Seasoned volunteers who have served the parks for many years, Don Cordner and Margaret Brookner, came to the rescue both in the Blackstone Park Conservation District and on the Boulevard at a time when several other volunteers of long standing were sidelined by illness. Don and Margaret were crucial to the successful completion of the spring section of the Trails Project sponsored by Rhode Island’s Department of Environmental Management and Coastal Resources Management Council. They are also overseeing the fall planting begun in September.

Nancy Nowak, Anna Browder and Mary Dennis, continued to look after the Forest Health Works Project on Angell Street. In this small planting, as in the larger conservation district, the emphasis is on native plants, which, in contrast to invasive species, are an asset to the environment.

Invasive plant species continue to be a major target of Conservancy activities, and for this we also depend on volunteers. Carrie Drake and Elena Riverstone collaborated in organizing

Community Neighborhood News and leading volunteers from the following groups this summer: EastSide Marketplace; Moses Brown high school students; and UNIFI – a natural foods company; Immanuel United Church of Christ; and Johnson & Wales Residence Advisors. A recent individual volunteer, Sam Bell, has begun helping out as well.

Candidate Forums At least 60 people attended our candidates’ forum on August 27, which was originally arranged for three pairs of Democratic primary-election contestants: for the seats, respectively, of City Councilor Seth Yurdin, state Rep. Edith Ajello and state Sen. Gayle Goldin. (No one is opposing the re-election of Wayland Square’s other Representative, Chris Blazejewski or its other City Council member, Sam Zurier.)

However, Rep. Ajello’s challenger never appeared, while Seth Yurdin’s opponent withdrew from the debate

five days beforehand.

So the audience questioned just Rep. Ajello, Sen. Goldin and Sen. Goldin’s challenger, Chris Wall. The two local Council members later made brief presentations.

Among the many topics covered in the discussion were housing, taxes, crime, education and the environment.

All three General Assembly candidates opposed the continued tenure of State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and the November ballot question (which Sam Zurier supports) to call a state constitutional convention. All three favored raising the state’s minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

Some of the most contentious disputes were over the implications of Chris Wall’s presidency of the state Board of Realtors and his campaign’s support by the National Association of Realtors.

We hope to have both Councilor Yurdin and his Republican opponent, Michael W. Long, attend our October 22 meeting. RE:Zoning Providence At their August 19 meeting, the City Plan Commission passed the final version of a comprehensively-revised Zoning Ordinance and map to the City Council for consideration, public hearings and enactment, probably in October.

The Commission did, however, provide itself room on its September 15 agenda to suggest possible adjustments in response to public comments made before or during their August meeting.

The West Broadway Neighborhood Association will hold its second Providence mayoral debate in their headquarters at 1560 Westminster Street (a converted Texaco station near the Cranston Street Armory at 7pm on Tuesday, October 7, where they will hear the Democratic nominee, Jorge Elorza, debate former Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr. (Independent ) and Dr. Daniel Harrop (Republican). It might be best to come early for the preceding social half-hour, since WBNA’s seating is limited.

Brown University’s A. Alfred Taubman Center for Public Policy has organized two general-election debates.

On Wednesday, October 1, at 7pm. the candidates for governor will speak at Sayles Hall, on the main green (through the Faunce House Arch on Waterman and Brown Streets). Two weeks later, on Wednesday, October 15, at 7pm, the candidates for Mayor of Providence will speak next door at 101 Salomon Hall (the DeCiccio Family Auditorium).

Crime Awareness Crime activity on the East Side continues to remain consistent and it is time to have the community take steps to address this issue. Resources for community members will be available this month in our e-newsletter and on our website that will provide steps on how we can to work together to reduce the level of crime. The East Side is a target because there are such major inconsistencies in crime awareness among residents. Personal belongings are still left in cars, cars are left unlocked, wheel locks are not being installed, alarm systems are installed but not used, residents still don’t communicate with their neighbors, the Police Department is not being called immediately for suspicious behavior (call 272-1111) and the list goes on. It all adds up and the perpetrators will continue to take advantage of opportunities that exist for them. We need to stop creating the opportunities and be proactive. It

starts with us and the Providence Police Department is there to support our efforts. We have to start working together to navigate this issue more effectively. Look for those resources coming soon.

The Ice Thing Our annual Halloween short fiction

Y

ou can’t grow up spending winters in New England without learning something about ice, even if you didn’t know you were learning it. When I was just a child, I learned to pile it and shape it into snow forts, and break it off tree limbs to use as a makeshift spear, or drink the cold droplets from the tip when I was thirsty and too busy to come inside. As an adolescent, I learned how to pack a hard, ragged piece of it into a snowball, so it would leave a mark on my older brother’s face when I ambushed him from behind the tool shed. I learned how to drive on it – the best way is to not drive on it at all – and once I entered culinary school I learned how to carve it, chopping a huge block of it into shape with a chainsaw, then trimming and chipping it with knives, picks and files until it almost came alive.

I can’t tell you exactly where or how I learned how to bring ice sculptures to life. It just happened one day. It was a skill that came in very handy at my older brother’s wedding.

John was three years older than me, and he had all the advantages, and besides the obvious of getting new clothes while I got hand-me-downs, John got a full ride at Brown, compliments of Dad’s business, while I had to work my way through culinary school after the business went bankrupt. And they weren’t easy jobs, either. I bussed tables, washed dishes and served as a line cook, usually working late into the night and then waking up for early classes the next day. By the time I started college, John was already a Vice President at the local bank – the president had been Dad’s friend and owed the family a favor. Apparently, Dad didn’t know anyone in the restaurant business, because I got nothing and liked it. The story of my life.

John also had a way of stealing my girlfriends, not just in college, but for as long as I can remember.

It began with Bonnie in sixth grade, and continued right up until he took Lucy right out from under me. Then the son of a bitch had the nerve to ask me to carve an ice sculpture for their wedding.

“Sure,” I said, trying hard not to choke on my hatred. “What would you like?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. Be creative.”

I’d gotten used to him taking my girlfriends – he was older, and had a better job, good looks and charisma. I’d never considered myself attractive

or interesting, and even at the ripe old age of 30, I was still shy and withdrawn. Food had always been my passion, which led to a weight problem, of course, but once I found my talent with the ice, I’d managed to keep my weight under control – more or less. An ice sculpture of a fruit bowl might look very pretty, but it has neither taste nor calories. But this time it was different. I thought Lucy and I really had something going, and I’d hoped that I might be the one to put that ring on her finger. And if John hadn’t come in and stolen the show at last year’s Halloween party, that’s

probably the way it would have gone.

“The wedding’s on Halloween, right?”

“That’s right, Jeff. It’s the one year anniversary of when we met. It was at your party last year.

Remember?”

I remembered all right. I nodded politely. He claimed not to have realized how serious it was between Lucy and I, and apparently, Lucy didn’t seem to realize it either, at least not when she met John.

“It’s a Friday night?”

“That’s right. At the Biltmore. The hotel is taking care of everything else. But I thought you could make us one of those cool ice things you do.”

“They’re called ice sculptures,” I reminded him for the hundredth time.

“Yeah. One of those. An ice sculpture. Something special.”

I didn’t say anything for a minute. The wheels were already turning in my mind.

“Oh, it’ll be special, all right,” I said, trying very hard to keep the sarcasm out of my voice. “It’ll be an ice sculpture to remember.”

“That’s my bro,” he said, and slapped me on the back, way too hard, as usual.

“I’ll do something Halloween related,” I said, as he walked away, barely listening.

“Whatever,” he said, with a shrug.

In order for this to be perfect, it would have to be meticulously planned. This wasn’t something I’d trust to my staff. So I delegated all of my other projects to my three employees, promising them extra pay, and I got onto the drawings right away. I made a few sketches, threw them away and then made a few more. My Dad was still ticked off that I hadn’t gone to art school – even he had to admit that I had the talent – but I know what artists make in the open market. Believe me, ice sells much better than

watercolors, especially in Providence where people with MFAs are waiting tables at IHOP and waiting for their big break. I, for one, wasn’t about to be standing in that line.

It took me most of the day, but by the time Brian Williams was updating the world on the situation in the Middle East, I had it done. It looked great on paper and I knew exactly how I was going to turn it from a pencil sketch into a three-dimensional “ice thing.” This one would be my masterpiece. It would even make Dad proud, I thought with a smile.

Since it was a Halloween wedding, I’d thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do something… well, horrible. I’d grown up reading all the good scary stuff – Poe, Lovecraft, Bloch, Steven King, Clive Barker, and I’d watched all the horror flicks. So my first ideas had gone in that direction, maybe a Cthulhu thing, or the Pinhead from Hellraiser, or maybe a good old-fashioned vampire. I’d considered a clown, even, or a rabid dog – King has a knack of making the mundane scary as hell.

But after spending most of the day dreaming up monstrosities, I’d finally gotten my head together and settled down. This was, after all, a wedding, even if it was being held on Halloween night. And it was my brother. I might resent the hell out of him, might hate him even, but how would it look if I wheeled in an ice sculpture of a Shoggoth or a Yeti on their wedding reception? My brother would probably laugh it off. Lucy would probably know what I was up to, but I could care less about that now. I knew my family would be so disappointed in me, though, if I tried a stunt like that, spoiling such a happy occasion with an ice zombie or a frozen werewolf. No, as tempting as it was to flirt with the terrible, I knew it was a bad idea. This time, I’d have to stick with tradition.

During the next week I ordered the block of ice, trimmed it with the chain saw, and had carved out a rough form, which I stored in the freezer and would finish up right before the reception. The design was quite intricate and I didn’t trust it to be transported, so I asked the hotel for permission to use their cooler to finalize the work. That way I could just ride it up the elevator to the ballroom, and it would be ready for John and Lucy and their guests.

The ceremony was held in the afternoon and was relatively small, since so many of the guests had to work. John gave most of his employees the day off, of course, but the scheduling was just one more example of his lack of consideration for others. I did have a couple hours after the ceremony and the pictures,

and, believe me, I needed every minute to finish the sculpture in time. I did allow my ego to take over one tiny bit, though. Instead of having the sculpture already in the ballroom for the reception, I decided to wheel the thing in after the bride and groom arrived, with much fanfare. I slipped the wedding planner an extra hundred bucks to announce its arrival when I was ready.

I have to say, it was the second best moment of my life, wheeling that thing in on a decorated cart as the wedding planner gushed about the special ice sculpture that beloved brother Jeff had prepared as a special wedding gift to the bride and groom. The guests stood and applauded as I pushed it past them.

Some “ooo’d” and “ahh’d” and even Dad nodded his approval. John and Lucy had no choice but to stand up and acknowledge the gift. While John made the standard “thank you to my wonderful, talented brother who makes ice things” speech, I did detect just the trace of a tear in Lucy’s eyes. Maybe she felt bad about dumping me after all.

Then, with a final round of applause, the reception continued, the food was served and the dancing began.

So, you’re wondering, what exactly was the ice thing, now aren’t you?

No, it wasn’t a monster or a ghoul, or a demon. I told you, I was going to do something classical. And I did.

The ice sculpture surely was my masterpiece. I have some photos of it, if you’d like to see, but I keep them in the safe in my office because it really was special and I wouldn’t want any of my employees to try to duplicate that work of art. No, it wasn’t Frankenstein,

or The Mummy, or The Creature from the Black Lagoon, either, though I had considered him as a possibility.

My ice sculpture was a six foot tall cupid, the icon of love, with his bow cocked and pointing right at the lovely couple. So later, after nearly everyone was drunk or stoned or drunk and stoned, when Cupid came to life and put that arrow through my bastard brother’s heart, no one saw it coming. He just went down, clutching his chest, and cupid just smiled and winked at me before he turned back into a thing of melting ice, only this time, with his bow released and his arrow gone.

Lucy was the only one who saw it happen, but she’d been drinking and snorting a little coke, and who’s going to believe that an ice sculpture came alive and shot an arrow through her husband’s heart? That would just be crazy. And while the autopsy showed extensive damage to the heart, such as an arrow might have made, there was no arrow, and everyone knows that ice just doesn’t make a very good weapon anyway – on some TV show they proved that it just breaks on impact. Besides, the toxicology report didn’t look good for go-getter John, who had a coke habit to match his ego and ambition, and so that was the end of that.

It’s like I said, I don’t know exactly when or how I learned how to bring my ice things to life. But if you want one for yourself, it’s going to cost you two things. First, it has to remain a secret – and one’s that’s easy, because what kind of lunatic would people think you are if you told them an ice carving could come to life?

And second, I’m going to need a really, really big tip.

First Cemetery Stroll through history at the North Burial Ground

Explore a piece of

Providence history while taking in the beautiful autumn foliage at North Burial Ground. Providence’s first public cemetery dates all the way back to 1700, holding over three centuries of artistic headstones, memorials and tombs that make for a beautiful glimpse into the past. A visit to North Burial Ground offers a fascinating experience for history, art, genealogy and nature enthusiasts alike.

Before the establishment of North Burial Ground, colonists buried their dead in scattered family graveyards on individual farms. Providence had no state churches and therefore no adjacent public burial grounds because Rhode Island’s religious and government institutions were kept so distinct. In June of 1700, however, the Providence Town Meeting designated an initial 45-acre plot of land for a town burial ground. The first interment occurred in 1711 with the burial of prominent resident Samuel Whipple. In 1785, many family graves were relocated to North Burial Ground to make way for improvements to the East Side’s

Benefit Street. Over the centuries, this area continued to grow into the 110acre cemetery, located between North Main Street and Branch Avenue, that is still in use today, with around over 200 burials a year held there. In 1977, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

North Burial Ground is the final resting place of many notable Rhode Island figures, from Rhode Island governors and mayors to Civil War and Revolutionary War leaders to other prominent Providence locals. The graves of John and Nicholas Brown, of Brown University fame, Charles Dow, co-founder Dow Jones & Company and founder of the Wall Street Journal, Stephen Hopkins, colonial governor and signatory of the Declaration of Independence, and Sarah Helen Whitman, poet and romantic interest of Edgar Allen Poe, are just a few of the significant Rhode Islanders buried there. Rhode Island College also recently started the North Burial Ground Project, a mission to make North Burial Ground an educational and economic asset for Providence, the Blackstone Valley region, Rhode Island and the nation as a whole. They’ve set up a series of online tours to appeal to a number of different individuals and organization, like the Women’s Tour and the Civil War Tour. The Women’s Tour highlights the variety of females buried there, from the 17th century colonists to 20th century immigrants, including mothers, writers, scholars, philanthropists, crusaders, homemakers, leaders, inventors and

pioneers. The Civil War Tour shows and details the lives and stories of the many Civil War veterans who are buried there. The project also seeks to make the burial ground a place for Rhode Island College students and faculty of many fields to use for experimental education projects. How the East Side Voted Large turnout here swung the mayor’s primary to Elorza

If you’re curious about why we all got inundated with phone calls, tonnage of glossy flyers (almost indistinguishable from each other by the way) and of course pages of ads in your favorite neighborhood newspaper, last Tuesday’s primary results supply the answer. East Siders vote! Our little patch of Providence accounts for about 20% of the homes in the City. Yet we accounted for almost a third of the total primary votes cast citywide. And without question, the results on the East Side helped swing the election especially in the primary race for mayor.

When the absentee votes are counted, it is expected that Jorge Elorza’s victory will be around a thousand votes.

Aided in large part by the support of Brett Smiley and his supporters, Elorza won a whopping 72% of the ballots here, carrying wards one, two and three by some 2,500 votes. The experts had said that Solomon needed to get 40% of the East Side vote to win. And despite the full bore efforts of councilmen Sam Zurier and Seth Yurdin who, along with former Fox Point Representative David Segal, mailed out an impassioned (and very well written) eleventh hour plea to support the City Council president, he didn’t make it.

The extent of Elorza’s East Side performance was impressive. He won all but two of the 12 voting sites, losing only at the Regency site by ten votes and at Martin Luther King where he was tied. His biggest victories came from the Nathan Bishop polling site where he won by over 600 votes (80% of the total cast), Summit by 520 votes (75% of the total) and Hope High by 340 votes (79% of the total).

While Solomon actually won the majority of the wards and had solid support in the Hispanic community, he was not able to offset Elorza’s East Side numbers, nor was he able to generate the large plurality he needed in his home ward.

Gina Raimondo was also the beneficiary of the large East Side primary

turnout. She captured 57% of the vote here (compared to 42% statewide).

She won all the precincts pretty easily with the exception of Martin Luther King where Mayor Taveras won by ten votes.

Her largest vote totals came at Temple Beth-el where she won by almost 400 votes (64% of the total cast) and Hope High where she had a 300-vote majority (68%). Maybe because of the Prius, Pell ran poorly on the East Side.

By the way, the solid women’s vote on the East Side also helped propel Nellie Gorbea to a surprisingly strong showing here. Some 60% of our voters supported her (compared to 52% statewide).

In terms of East Side races, two generated the most attention: the one for Gordon Fox’s old seat in the House and the East Side Senate contest between Gayle Goldin and Chris Wall. Aaron Regunberg waged an enthusiastic campaign for the Representative race and ran strongest in the Summit area (where he captured 60% of the vote cast) and weakest at the Epoch polling site where he lost to Heather Tow-Yick.

At the four polling sites combined, Regunberg won 51% of the vote. A late email charge by Heather Tow-Yick got her to 35%. Law professor and businesswoman Miriam Ross got 15%.

Regunberg still has to defeat Independent candidate Ethan Gyles, an environmental engineer who names ethics reform, the environment, economic growth and education as his priorities.

While the Goldin-Wall race started quietly, it certainly ended with a flourish.

More than one East Sider was greeted by up to four glossy mailing from incumbent Goldin the day before the election. Flyer funding we’re told came from a disparate group of supporters…

Planned Parenthood, environmental groups and some unions. Meanwhile bolstered by some significant money from the Real Estate Association, Chris Wall went all in at the finish as well.

Undoubtedly aided by the strong turnout of women in support of Gina Raimondo, Goldin cruised to an impressive 69% to 31% victory. For the record, Goldin is now officially returned as our State Senator since there is no Republican running.

Meanwhile longtime incumbent Representative Edie Ajello easily brushed off her opponent Nat Hannah (who backed out of public debates with her by the way), winning 78% of the vote. She will return for her 12th term in the House.

Seth Yurdin also cruised to victory over his opponent Malcolm Reis with 72% of the vote. He still has to face Republican Michael Long, a Cranston policeman. Long was born in Fox Point, however, and lives in Corliss Landing.

As we usually do, we consulted with ESM’s personal political insider who has years of experience polling, organizing and more important, being unfailingly accurate with his predictions.

He offered an interesting counterpoint to the conventional wisdom that Gina won because she was the beneficiary of the split in the union support between Mayor Taveras and newcomer Clay Pell. “I disagree with that. My numbers show that 60% of Pell support came from women.

There’s no way she wouldn’t have gotten enough of his support to get over 50% on her own. She ran a smart campaign. Softening her image initially, positioning herself as a native Rhode Islander who cares. Then she stayed on message at the end emphasizing she’s the only one with

private sector experience who knows how to create jobs.”

He also weighed in with his thoughts on the eagerly awaited (or feared) Providence mayoral contest. He noted that Buddy’s raised a lot of money and no one is better at face-to-face politicking than him. “His numbers indicate a third of the likely voters love Buddy, a third hate his guts but the final third haven’t been here long enough to know him at all or what he did good or bad. This latter group is obviously younger and more likely Hispanic. And while logic suggests they’re more likely to support Elorza, Rhode Island’s never seen a politician quite like Buddy.

He loves the job and will not be outworked. And while it’s clear some independent money will emerge to help the cash-starved Elorza campaign, the danger is a sympathetic backlash against everyone piling on Buddy.”

And as for our own advice for the candidates (as if anyone listens)? For Buddy: Create a team that inspires voters and insures the good Buddy is in control of the bad Buddy. Get someone like Brendan Doherty involved in public safety; Gary Sasse as a key financial administrator. Add some young clear thinkers who care about the City as much as you purport to. And our advice for Jorge: Keep Brett Smiley close by if you want to hold on to the East Side progressives and make sure everyone addresses you as “Judge” every chance you get. And in terms of dealing with the “experience” and “leadership” issues, is there a place for Michael Solomon or someone like him in the equation?

Tragic Lessons Giving our children the skills needed to handle tough events

mass murder perpetrated on students and educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut happened on the morning of Friday, December 14, 2012. For all of us – and especially those of us with kids at school – misery and anguish dominated. When our own kids got home from school, we had to figure out how to attempt to explain to them that kids just like them went to school and died there. My family’s personal connections exacerbated the situation. I’m from that area. My sister teaches at Newtown High School. A childhood friend lost her niece, one of the many first graders killed. A family friend was a firstresponding police officer. There were no possible words that would explain this madness to my own first-grader, nor to his fourth- and seventh-grade brothers, but we knew we had to try, because there was no way they wouldn’t hear about it and associate it with people and places they knew. We did our best to explain the situation, touching on mental illness, security and safety, the remote likelihood that this would ever happen to them, that they were safe, and that they would stay that way.

Another friend, with less direct connections, needed time to think through how to talk with her fourth-grade son.

She let me know when I picked up her son for a playdate that he was out of the loop. We drove past a flag at halfstaff and one of my kids asked, “Why’s the flag halfway down?” Our guest – supposedly enjoying a few more hours of innocence while his mom worked out how to tell him – said, “Oh, that’s because all those kids in Connecticut got shot yesterday.”

The point, which I am sure you grasp, is that it’s nearly impossible to shield your kids from upsetting and scary news. Personal, local and global tragedies will make themselves known.

Since Sandy Hook, we’ve all talked with our kids about a variety of difficult conflicts and tragedies. It’s not easy, but advice from psychologists and communications experts can help:

For younger children 1. Ask what they know. It’s useful to know what they already understand so you can understand their perspective and build from there.

2. State the facts. Give them some basic information, but don’t over-explain or go out of your way to correct them, unless the information they have impedes their understanding.

3. Assure them that they’re safe. Images of conflict and violence can be stressful. Explain to your kids that they are secure. Walk that walk by paying extra attention to them if they seem at all anxious, and by maintaining a predictable family routine.

4. Listen to them. Let them ask questions, and provide clear answers.

5. Limit exposure to television news.

Not much good comes when young ones are exposed to the tragedy rehash that is our media landscape. For that matter, watching endless loops of horror on cable news isn’t great for any of us. Learn the facts, and then turn your attention elsewhere.

For older children 1. Again, ask what they know. Just as with young kids, it’s useful to know what they already understand.

2. Share the facts of the situation, and be prepared to discuss them. While you may not share your children’s

opinions, don’t get into a debate. Talk, and also listen.

3. Be prepared for emotion. Adolescents may not want to discuss difficult subjects, at least not initially. Share the facts, assure your children that you’re there to listen and talk, and if they don’t want to talk, let it be. On the other hand, some kids may personalize and dramatically associate themselves with tragic news. Help them see that while what happened is truly terrible, it’s not personal, and they are safe.

4. Older kids will use television, the internet, the newspaper and other sources to find out more about what’s going on in the world. Expect this, and plan to spend time with them reading and watching together and discussing media coverage of difficult world events.

We all need skills and tools to talk with young people about threats such as war and violence. The ways we do that depend on our values and personal experience. What we tell our kids about risk and safety also depends on how others may choose to view us and our children or students.

Due to factors out of our control such as race and religion, the prospects of danger and violence vary widely among and within neighborhoods, including the East Side. May all of our kids have the support to understand frightening world events, and may they all stay safe themselves, here and everywhere.

Rhode Island is Rethinking High-Stakes Standardized Tests Following sustained concern from families and educators, the Rhode Island Department of Education has launched a review of state and local educational testing practices. Called the Assessment Project, this initiative will review what’s happening with high-stakes standardized tests and propose changes. For many educators and families, to whom evidence of over-testing is already abundant, this is welcome news and may help ameliorate some of the effects of our current assessment practices, which have at many schools prevented innovation, academic exploration, creativity, and long-term student growth and achievement. This follows legislation passed earlier this year in which the General Assembly imposed a moratorium on the use of standardized test scores as a requirement for high school graduation.

In response, Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist proposed a delay in the policy until at least 2020. The state has also deferred the use of highstakes standardized test scores as a factor in teacher evaluations until 2017.

Walking School Bus “Super Volunteers” Needed Family Service of Rhode Island’s Walking School Bus program is looking for “Super Volunteers,” who will receive $500 per school semester for volunteering at least four times a week. The Walking School Bus serves Bailey and Fogarty elementary schools in Providence’s South Side neighborhood, providing routes to and from school. The initiative ensures that children living within a mile of the school (and therefore, according to Providence Public School policy, not eligible for school bus transportation) can arrive on time and return home safely, even when family members are unable to walk with them.

The Super Volunteers program is dedicated to the memory of Ian Cameron, one of the first volunteers when the Walking Bus began in 2012. Julie Casmiro, director of development at Family Service of Rhode Island, said, “Ian Cameron from East Greenwich. He started volunteering his time while he was home from college for winter break. Though it was bitterly cold he volunteered with an unparalleled level of enthusiasm, passion and dedication. We are pleased to name our ‘Super Volunteer’ initiative in his honor.” Cameron was 24 years old when he died in an automobile accident, and was a student at Middlebury College in Vermont.

While sorting through dusty old photographs at my parents’ house the other day, I came across a snapshot of me as a newborn. With big saucer eyes and a full head of dark hair, I was cute as a Portuguese muffin. There was just one tiny problem: my mother had been clearly trying to kill me.

The proof was in the Polaroid.

She had plopped me down in the crib on my stomach and then covered my legs and back with a heavy tiedye blanket made of fleece. As if that wasn’t awful enough, my dear mother made sure to throw a few stuffed animals onto the mattress for good measure. Somehow I survived infancy, though neither of us is quite sure how.

“But honey,” my mother said to me, in between sheepish giggles, “that was 33 years ago! Things were so different back then. Honestly – we didn’t know any better! We just did the best we could with what we had.”

After promising that I wasn’t in fact harboring any ill will against her and her 1980 naiveté, I hopped in my Passat and headed for home. Lost in my thoughts on the interstate, I couldn’t help but to think that life must have been a whole lot simpler back then.

(You should know, dear reader,

that my belly is currently the size of planet Earth. By the time this issue goes to press, I will have already given birth to my son.)

My son.

When I say those two simple words aloud, the hairs on my forearms stand at attention. Even my follicles know that we’re about to be handed our biggest challenge yet; we’re about to be tasked with keeping a helpless, seven-pound ball of squirming, pinktinged flesh alive.

And while my mother most certainly grappled with some of the same universal fears that I grapple with now – Will I have the energy to do this? Am I financially stable enough to support a child? – modern technology has provided me with a plethora of additional worry topics that would have never plagued mothers of decades ago.

Uber-popular pregnancy sites like babycenter.com are hotbeds of anguish.

Even so, I can’t avert my eyes from the wreckage. I simply must know which foods and activities to eschew during pregnancy, I simply must! FYI, ingesting a turkey sandwich or a soft serve ice cream cone equals certain death for your unborn child; both should be avoided at all costs. And don’t you dare

even think of playing a tennis match lest you trip over your own two feet while reaching to return a lob.

These days, the list of pregnancy no-nos is long and overwhelming, rivaled only by the contemporary baby registry list of pregnancy must-haves.

After all, we have to keep up with the Joneses if our offspring are ever to have a chance at survival.

The latest hot gadget is Sproutling, a wearable baby monitor that predicts sleep patterns and optimal sleep conditions. You simply strap the $249 band around your infant’s ankle each night to receive messages sent to your smart phone telling you if your precious pink ball is sleeping soundly or if something is wrong. (You’d better pre-order yours soon, ladies; the price will jump to $299 next year.)

Technology and its consequent interconnectedness open our mascaraladen eyes to possibilities our mothers never even imagined. It’s a frightening, exhausting and over-stimulating world we live in… but I wouldn’t trade it for any other. There’s no place I’d rather be than right here, in the year 2014, purchasing crazy-expensive baby monitors and worrying myself sick over my son.

Sky-High Sipping Imbibing with a view at the ProvidenceG

Expect fast service with a smile; this Providence transplant won the 2013 Pink Pump Palooza – a 50-yard dash in high heels to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

Where did you learn to tend bar?

I’m from a bartending family. Dad owned a couple bars. My first job was bussing tables at 16. I worked in a couple of dive bars when I got home from the service.

What’s the atmosphere like?

This is a little bit of a higher end rooftop bar in a great city that really needed one. Enjoy a great happy hour crowd after work, which includes lawyers, doctors, nurses and politicians.

Around 9pm, a younger vibe sets in; we turn up the music a little more. Besides dinner tables, we have a cocktail lounge area with great couches. This is a step in the direction to give Providence that big city feel.

Are there plans to keep it open through the cooler months?

The Rooftop will be open through midNovember. It’ll be enclosed with panels that will help to create a greenhouse effect and keep the space warm.

One thing you have to eat at the Rooftop?

Wagyu top sirloin served over truffle potato puree for only $32; it’s truly amazing. This steak would cost $60 anywhere else. That or the deconstructed lobster featuring tail meat claw meat, and smoked bacon. It’s really, really good.

What would you pair with those dishes?

A nice of glass of Ergo Rioja would go well with the wagyu. The Bon Vivant is a nice citrusy, blueberry easy-to-drink cocktail to pair with the Lobster BLT.

Describe the cocktail list.

The cocktail selection is not that overwhelming or too complicated. I’d describe it as classic cocktails with a spin.

For example the Bon Vivant is a blueberry mojito using citrus vodka instead of rum. We’re doing great things up here including making our own shrubs.

What’s a shrub?

It’s made with fresh fruit, vinegar and sugar. The vinegar helps preserve the fruit. You don’t get any of the bitterness or anything. It’s a good way to have a fresh purée on hand to use as a mixer in our cocktails. Order The Belle Vue made with Belvedere Vodka, Chambord, strawberry shrub and fresh lime.

What do you want the Rooftop to be known for?

An experience. It’s the first one in Providence and it’s successful. We

have a top notch chef putting out a great different menu. All alcohol is top shelf; well vodka is Kettle One. We want to supply the best.

When you’re not getting new tattoos or making shrubs, what are you doing?

When I have free time, I spend time it with my two kids. Otherwise, I’m enjoying going out to eat and drink, learning about food and trying new things. I work in the restaurant business because I love it.

What’s a great fall cocktail to make at home?

Negroni is coming back on the scene. It’s simple to make. Three equal parts of top shelf gin, Campari and sweet vermouth with a dash of bitters and orange zest. Serve it straight up or on the rocks. It’s a complex drink which is what I feel fall is about. More harvest flavors.

Any bartending pet peeves?

When someone asks, “When are you going to get a real job?” This is my career. I’m in one of the original crafts that started in America. The Revolutionary War was planned over gentleman drinking a pint. It’s actually starting to be looked at as a trade again. My dream is to someday own my own place.

What else are you pouring?

We have a standard wine selection with an emphasis on white wines as well as a seasonal beer selection. My favorite white is the Brancott Sauvignon Blanc.

Cara’s says her aim is to bring out ingredients so that you can’t leave saying, “we could have just gone to chipotle.” Cara’s specials are a lot more engaged with seasonal produce as well. For instance, recently she made a grilled watermelon salsa on a great farmers market whim.

In addition to new food, Cara’s counterpart in bar manager Christina Cook, has a whole new drink menu with a commitment to fresh exciting ingredients like muddled watermelon and infused tequilas. They are also teaming up for a new brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm, with a $30 choice of entrée and bottomless drink selection. With a large deck and patio facing the Providence River to a sky dominated by the smoke stacks of the Manchester Power Station, Lola’s Tequila Bar and Cantina offers a lot before your food even arrives. Often, with a nice view, food becomes an afterthought.

Lola’s owners, also of Whiskey Republic next door, have made a significant statement of intent to the contrary, bringing in a new Executive Chef Cara Marie Duskin to completely overhaul their menu.

Cara is originally from Naples, Florida, but has been working in Rhode Island for the last six years, most recently at Nordstrom’s Marketplace Cafe. Since being hired on in mid-June, Cara has been hard at work developing a new menu, which will be in place this month. While the favored mainstays of a Mexican restaurant are not neglected, Cara was chosen because she represented a more inclusive new direction, with extensive experience with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food. With these dietary considerations increasingly well-represented in Providence, Cara has crafted a menu where all can find something they are excited about – both veggie and carnivore alike. More basically, Cara wants a massive departure from what she calls the “nuke everything and smother in sauce” approach to Mexican.

Though she says she has no designs on purely authentic Mexican food, Cara has been happily exploring traditional Mexican ingredients that are sadly underrepresented in many approximations of the cuisine. For instance, she uses fresh jicama in her crab salpicon, where it is mixed with lime marinated crab meat, cilantro and scallions, and served over fried plantains. Cara has also gone the extra mile by making all of her queso fresco in-house. Queso fresco is an unaged cheese that can be made in a matter of hours, but to our detriment, few bother. For dessert, Cara has been perfecting her honey-cayenne glazed sopaipillas, which are a pastry hybrid of a donut and a pillow, you know, what we’d eat in heaven while sliding down rainbows with plaque-immune angel hearts.

One Full (Over)Night of Boo at the Zoo There’s no more interesting a form of art than the intricately carved and illuminated pumpkins that make up the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular exhibition that delights children and adults alike each fall at Roger Williams Park Zoo. This year, you and your little ones can sign up for a night none of you will soon forget.

The Family Overnight! is a unique non-scary Halloween experience where you’ll sleep at the zoo. On October 30, the Avon Cinema will present two showings of Frankenstein starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch, with the two lead actors alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. The production is a stage adaption of the famed novel and first premiered at the Royal National Theatre in London in 2011. Directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (of Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire fame), the production weaves the tale of a grotesque Creature who is cast out into the world by his maker. After facing cruelty at every turn, the Creature vows to track down his creator in order to set things right. He says, “Part of our inspiration came from Briarcliffe Manor, our nursing home, where we began specializing in dementia care around 20 years ago because of an upswing in the number of people receiving rehabilitation services who also had dementia and who could not safely return home.” What is apparent upon visiting the Briarcliffe grounds is the shared purpose felt among all the employees to deliver professional and compassionate care to the residents.

Located in a pastoral section of Johnston, the campus is a quick drive from Providence. Schedule a visit and you will see that the guests are treated like family; this is not a corporatized type of facility. Akshay himself has a house on the grounds. “To the maximum extent possible, our goal is to provide our residents with a very high quality of life” he explains. Researchers at Brown University conducted a study that showed with empirical evidence that the memory care residents living at Briarcliffe experienced positive effects on their mood and quality of life due to the programming and unique design elements.

The process of the consultation involves showcasing different style and fabric choices using a storyboard presentation.

This fall there are some really exciting fabrics coming in. Vitale Barberis continues to improve their technology, where their Super 130s are now Super 140s and 150s without interrupting the integrity of the cloth. Can you offer any shopping advice?

“Look your best. Sales people are extremely judgmental… [many] won’t pay as much attention to you if you’re not put together,” she says. “American women often don’t know their proper measurements… we overcompensate [and buy too many clothes] because we don’t know ourselves.”

You’re young to own a company. Do you have business or fashion role models?

“I come from a family of entrepreneurs; my mother started her business in our basement when was I was very young.

“I’m always overly accessorized; I love big jewelry. My closets are full of very simple pieces and not ornate in color and detail,” Penney explains. “I’m less

conscious of trends and more of what looks good on me.”

Do you see any consistencies among clients?

“Many women are paralyzed with fear about wearing colors or patterns – risk it,” encourages Penney, who confesses that, she, too, needs to incorporate more color into her wardrobe to avoid the classic “all black” look so common among women in Manhattan.
