on what needs to be done next to keep Providence moving forward, there has been surprising agreement on one modest suggestion we think might produce a positive impact without costing the City a dime. Almost two decades ago, Providence made a decision to drop the residency requirement for all City employees. In hindsight, many now feel that decision was unfortunate.

It strikes us that there would be several obvious advantages in reinstating residency requirements for police, firemen, city workers and certainly department heads. In addition to slowing down flight to the suburbs, improving our tax base and stabilizing real estate values, it would give city workers a firsthand look at what works and, perhaps in the case of snow removal and pot hole filling, what doesn’t.

Seems to us residency requirements would go a long way towards doing all of the above.

And with the rich variety of neighborhoods that make up Providence, the wide array of cultural and historic offerings that exist here and the beauty of our architecture, parks infrastructure and recreational opportunities, there are plenty of interesting residential options such that living in the city shouldn’t be a burden to anyone.

So we would respectfully ask all our Mayoral candidates to take a hard look at reinstating the residency requirement should they be elected. It’s a great idea whose time has come. Again.

PVD Gets Artsier Creative reuse of the i-195 land

by Audrey Falk Since I-195’s big move, parcels of land formerly part of the highway have been sitting vacant and unused. The I-195 Redevelopment District Commission has been overseeing all aspects of developing this newly available – and valuable – 20 acres of land, with the goal of reconnecting the unique and historic areas of the city split

apart by the highway and establishing a vital and diverse city center. This spring, the Commission sought the help of six local artists to breathe new life into the empty lots, and the yearlong installations that have popped up all over downtown are telling stories that weave Providence’s history with the city’s new open space.

Wood-Frame Arch Wickenden Street, South Main Street, Pike Street and South Water Street Providence native Matthew Kramer used wood and cable to create a 16x16 cable-latticed, wood-framed arch, but the negative space it beholds is just as integral a part of the piece. The swooping, overlapping ribbed cables meet and frame the downtown Providence skyline, creating a picture-perfect vista of nature and industry. While the heavy-duty hooks, rings and bolts are practical, they beautifully unite the simplistic materials to evoke the Providence River Bridge, which the arch also frames.

I Walk, Therefore I Dream Clifford Street, East Franklin Street and Bassett Street

RISD grad Sophia Sobers used ornamental grass, hanging plants, solar cells and LED lights to marry nature and technology with her piece. Spread out among the grass are tall planters in white and natural wood covered with wooden, lattice-like branches. Multicolored flowers sprouted within mingle with solar cells. Though the space is along the highway, the cluster of plants creates a beautiful enclave to walk within.

Amethyst Rising Bassett Street, East Franklin Street and Hoppin Street Topher Gent, Rhode Island native and RISD graduate, used his experience in the state to call on an important area of Providence’s past – the Jewelry District.

His sculpture, Amethyst Rising, brings to mind faceted gemstones with its linear yet multidimensional structure.

Situated adjacent to the Jewelry District, the piece adds interest to its barren lot and an inspiration of beauty and potential beheld by the booming jewelry industry.

Bird House Community Alves Way, Traverse Street and George M. Cohan Boulevard

RISD alum Frank Hammond designed a community of birdhouses in the green space behind Wickenden Street. The 14 birdhouses span different sizes and colors to accommodate various local species. Built on a peaceful stretch of grass bordered with trees right in front of the highway, the pieces highlight the coexistence of the natural and urban aspects of Providence.

Point and East Franklin Street Intersection Adam Anderson, a dual Brown and RISD graduate, brought whimsy and color to his street-side space. A black triangle outlines the garden’s perimeter, which is shielded by white picket fencing. Red wood strips separate rows of soil where leafy plants are growing next to stationary lime green stalks that are propping up reflective aluminum balls. The stalks, which vary in height, playfully evoke an oversized natural garden, and capture the reflections of the cars whizzing by, the surrounding buildings and the sky.

RISD alum Aarti Kathuria has designed an exhibition space, Panoply, which will be installed at the bank of the river at South Water Street in September. Panoply will be a sequence of A-frames from which different views of the city emerge. As the piece is all about reflecting on Providence’s past as well as its present moment, there is an interactive aspect that allows visitors to read QR codes set in the frames that will connect them to stories about Providence submitted by the public. Kathuria’s piece not only seeks to create an individual experience, but a shared one as a community too.

Meet Four Candidates Who Aren’t Interested in Being Either Mayor or Governor

You can never be certain where and when WaterFire impresario Barnaby Evans might appear to proselytize his signature creation. Imagine our surprise last month to find Barnaby holding court at the lawn next to Dedee Shattuck’s stunning art gallery in Westport with his caldron’s blazing and his guest dancers dancing… and with nary a river in sight. Well fortunately this is a big month for Barnaby and his minions right here in Providence with three lightings scheduled for September on the 4th, the 19th and the 27th. Ladies. Gentlemen. Start those torches!

East Side Marketplace Sold But Not Saying Goodbye The rumors have swirled for months, maybe even years, that Scott Laurans was going to sell his popular super-

market to one of those big national chains. Well at long last he has, but the good news is, it appears the market will retain virtually all of its staff and a large degree of its independence. The new owner is Ahold, a Dutch company that operates in this country as Stop & Shop. It is expected the store will retain many, if not most, of its current product lines. It also may function as a testing ground for new initiatives before they get rolled out to the whole chain. The company has 775 stores in the U.S. and about 3,000 more in Europe. Brian Pacheco will remain as the manager of the store. East Side Marketplace has been a treasured East Side institution and we wish them well during the transition. We’ll have more details next issue about what specific changes we can all expect.

Providence, We Have a Touch Down!

Hopefully many of them! September 27 marks the first home game of the year against perennial powerhouse Harvard. The game will be at Brown Stadium (corner of Elmgrove and Sessions), begins at 6pm and marks a continuation of the night game tradition that began a few years ago and have proven quite popular with both the students and the neighbors. For one glorious evening, usually preceded by tailgating, burgers and perhaps a beverage or two, the East Side takes on the feel of a mini (and we emphasize mini) Big Ten site. The crowd has been known to get a little rowdy especially if our hometown heroes can march up and down the field against the dreaded Crimson. Go Brunonia!

Candidate Forums Three of our sitting office-holders (Rep. Edith Ajello and Councillors Seth Yurdin and Sam Zurier) spoke to a small but engaged audience at our July meeting – which had to compete with an emergency rally about the Middle East near the other end of Elmgrove Avenue – but they were not joined by any of the other candidates in this year’s elections. So, while there was a lively discussion of state and municipal issues that night, it wasn’t really a candidates’ forum.

However on Wednesday, August 27, three pairs of candidates in the Sept.

9 Democratic primary have agreed to debate each other: * City Council majority leader Seth Yurdin with Malcolm Reis * State Rep. Edith Ajello with Nathanael Hannah * State Sen. Gayle Goldin with Chris Wall The meeting begins at 7pm at Books on the Square.

Seth Yurdin’s Council seat (First Ward, south of Angell Street) will also be contested in the Nov. 4 general election by a Republican, Michael Long. Although arrangements had not been made at the time of this writing, we hope to have Mr. Long debate the winner of the Democratic primary at our Wednesday monthly meeting on either September 24 or, more likely, October 22 (both at 7pm in Books on the Square).

The West Broadway Neighborhood Association has announced a pair of mayoral debates in their headquarters at 1560 Westminster Street (a converted Texaco station near the Cranston Street Armory). On Tuesday, September 2, a week before the primaries, they will hear the Democratic candidates; and on Tuesday, October 9, four weeks before the general election, they will hear the Democratic nominee debate former Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr. (Independent) and Dr. Daniel Harrop (Republican). Summit neighborhood Association Yard Sale Planned for This Month Another Summit tradition, the community yard sale, is about to happen.

Scheduled for 10am to 2pm Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Church of the Redeemer at 655 Hope St., the event consists of people bringing their surplus property to a central location and displaying it for sale on tables provided by SNA for a fee. All of the proceeds of the exchanges will go to the sellers.

Food vendors are invited and musicians are being sought. Application forms are available on the SNA website and in its July newsletter.

Candidates in Primary Attend Forum About 150 neighborhood residents and political advocates gathered in a large, muggy room on the evening of Tuesday, July 22, to hear the candidates for Providence mayor and District 4 representative plead their cases.

Democrats Jorge Elorza, Brett Smiley, Michael Solomon and Christopher Young, all vying in the primary this month for the chance to run for mayor, joined fellow Democrats Aaron Regunberg, Miriam Ross and Heather Tow-Yick, who will face each other in the primary for the General Assembly seat vacated

by Gordon Fox. Held at 7pm in the main dining room of Summit Commons at 99 Hillside Ave., the forum was the first of two sponsored by the Summit Neighborhood Association. The second was to be Wednesday, July 30, and feature both parties’ candidates for governor in the primary.

At Tuesday’s session, SNA board member Thomas Schmeling, associate professor and chair of the political science department at Rhode Island College, was moderator and posed

a series of questions developed from topics submitted by neighborhood residents. The candidates then explained their positions.

Winners of Photo Contest Named The “Streets of Summit” photo contest sponsored by SNA drew a total of 11 submissions and a pair of judges awarded three top prizes.

The contest, the brainchild of SNA board member Joan Retsinas, asked for pictures of favorite people, places or things in the Summit and Mount Hope neighborhoods. They were judged by Lisa Newby, a picture editor and page designer at The Providence Journal and Steve Mason, a professional photographer. Cash prizes were given to the top three finishers and gift certificates to local photo stores went to the four honorable mentions.

Blackstone Parks Conservancy What’s Next?

After more than two years of preparation, of rejoicing, anticipation and what felt like near-death experiences, it seemed unreal to be finally celebrating completion of the Recreational Trails and Habitat Restoration Project in the Blackstone Park Conservation District beside the Seekonk River. But there we were, in the shade at Parkside Avenue, on a pleasant July morning, Blackstone Parks Conservancy volunteers showing state officials, a state senator and other friends of the park the newly refurbished trails and recently installed plants.

First, Rhode Island’s Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) teamed up to underwrite trail restoration with a grant of $67,320, with over $17,000 matching required, supplied by the Parks Department in the form of goods and services, and volunteer hours by the BPC. Next, the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) awarded a habitat restoration grant of $22,770. A $1,000 grant from the RI Senate by Senator Gayle Goldin and a $1,000 donation from a BPC Park Committee member rounded out the amount needed.

These last donations made it possible to fully realize the planting plan, an essential part of holding soil in place in places subject to stresses. Selected carefully for their chances of survival, native species already present in the Conservation District were chosen. Because of a late start this spring, only one-third of the plants were installed.

The rest will be planted in early fall.

Keeping soil where it belongs atop the hilly park is a challenge. To appreciate the impact of these large environmental grants, it helps to know that the amount spent on materials for the trails in the past has run between $2,000 and $3,000 annually. Conservancy and Appalachian Mountain Club volunteers over the years, and more recently the Friends of Blackstone Park, have worked to resist the downward pressure on this steeply raked site, but the waterbars they built on the trails each year were insufficient to withstand intensifying storms and mounting foot traffic. The grants arrived just as climate change was becoming more evident through unusually heavy storms.

The Park community is debted to Superintendent Bob McMahon, who not only lent credibility to the Conservancy application but also at critical junctures bolstered the volunteers’ capacity to tackle a project of unprecedented magnitude for the BPC’s small board.

Of the many compliments received on the celebratory tour, perhaps the most gratifying to Conservancy volunteers was that the project had found just the right balance between interfering and allowing the park to remain natural. That had been exactly the challenge: how to do enough to protect the woodland from erosion without destroying its semi-wildness.

Now begins the work of maintenance, replenishing wood chips on the trails in order to continue making the soil more permeable. Key this year is watering, a major – and expensive – concern during a dry summer. The Board of the Conservancy has pledged to set up a maintenance fund.

Something there is about this historic park – formerly Native American hunting and fishing grounds and then Moses Brown’s farm – that seems to inspire drama. Just as volunteer project managers were beginning to breathe deeply again after successful completion of the project by Yardworks, the

conscientious new field manager of Groundwork Providence, Giles MacDonald, frantically called the Conservancy to say he couldn’t get his watering truck into the Park. A film crew had blocked all the access streets.

Hasty conferring among the managers allowed that, given the relatively cool weather, the plants would survive till Monday, at which time it would be possible to get the water truck into the park.

And so they did.

Events September 17, the Blackstone Park Conservation District will be a stop on the annual rally of the Trust for Public Land.

Fox Point neighborhood Association Events this Month FPNA Board Meeting, 7pm, Monday, September 8 at the Vartan Gregorian Bath House Community Room, 455 Wickenden Street.

FPNA Attends CityWALK Meeting Several board members of the Fox Point Neighborhood Association, FPNA, attended a July meeting to hear Ron Henderson of L+A Landscape Architects, explain his preliminary plan for CityWALK, a concept of linking eight neighborhoods in Providence through a network of pedestrian and bicycle spaces.

Henderson, who was hired by the Jewelry District, said this route would consist of linear spaces and public parks; city views and entries to historic buildings; and activities such as shopping and eating. “We’re not pushing development away, our aim is to provide a connection,” he explained.

The upcoming development of the I-195 parcels presents a unique opportunity for Providence to achieve more connectivity between its neighborhoods

through alternate forms of transportation to the automobile, he pointed out. The eight neighborhoods that CityWALK aims to connect with a network of pedestrian and bicycle spaces are Fox Point, Jewelry District, Downtown, West End, South Providence, Elmwood, South Elmwood and Washington Park.

In Fox Point, Henderson said the walk “begins” with the Gano Street riverfront, followed by the Harbor Walk, the Hurricane Barrier and the Wickenden shopping area ”loop.” This variable line then leads to the new linear parks to be developed on the I-195 parcels along the Providence River. Henderson urged the development of a floating “wharf-walk” under the Point Street Bridge as a way to strengthen the connectivity of River Walk Park.

From Fox Point, the proposed pedestrian bridge over the river then joins the Jewelry District and Downtown through a planned west side park. Some of the West Side points of interest along CityWALK include Roger Williams Park, Trinity Square, Grace Cemetery, Knight Memorial Library and the artwork in Columbus Square.

Board Of Licences Denies Block Party Request The Board of Licenses denied a request by The Whiskey Republic, located on 515 South Water Street, to have a three-day block party in mid-August.

Testifying against the event were Lieutenant Ryan from the Providence Police, Councilman Seth Yurdin and a resident from Corliss Landing.

Opponents to the party maintained that past events held by this establishment have been loud and disruptive, not only for Corliss Landing residents, but also for nearby residents in Fox Point.

“We’re really glad that the Board of Licenses is listening to the community and making the right rulings”, Councilman Yurdin said. “When applicants aren’t meeting their obligations or respecting the neighborhood, they should not have another opportunity to disturb our community.”

I-195 Commission Meets on Proposed Parks Also in July, FPNA board members attended an I-195 Commission meeting where they heard of design plans, which are 30% complete, for the proposed parks.

Community Neighborhood News There are two linear parks on the East Side that run along the Providence River. The first is called St. James Park, which will connect to the proposed pedestrian bridge that joins a much larger park on the west side of the river. Preliminary plans call for St. James Park include a small pergola at the end of the street that will be surrounded by “musical structures,” that can be “played.” Also, proposed are chess tables and numerous benches to watch the river activity. Where possible, a natural shoreline with high meadow grasses will reflect its historical background.

The second, unnamed, park will continue southward, extending from the River Walk Park to Wickenden Street and the Point Street Bridge. Along the way there will be some granite stone inlet structures, overlooking a southern view with benches, artwork and other structures that “pop out,” of a grassy meadow.

Designers said that they will be working to find the best way to continue the CityWALK concept through Fox Point, the Jewelry District and Downtown. First, they will be finishing plans for a stone river wall to be made of modular pieces, which coordinate to present a continuous appearance of materials along both sides of the river. These structures will be completed within the coming year. On the East Side, there will be tiered walls to include the meadow and structures.

The Commission plans another update after designers make adjustments to this design. At some point, a public presentation of the future parks’ scheme will be held. Mayoral Primary Remains Too Close to Call

By Barry Fain and Steven Triedman If the Providence mayoral race were a movie, you’d be hard pressed to figure out who is going to emerge as the leading man or how the darn thing is going to turn out.

Polls are showing the race close, but with numbers changing daily. The gloves are off and the swings have begun in earnest between Jorge Elorza, Brett Smiley and Michael Solomon as charges and countercharges flow among them. The risk is that an ugly knock-out or TKO will place the winner at a significant disadvantage when the real heavyweight battle begins between the primary winner, Republican Dan Harrop and the defending former champion, Independent Buddy Cianci.

Meanwhile, Cianci has been unusually quiet watching the show and raising an impressive amount of money in his first weeks after his announcement. However, no one is taking Buddy lightly. While November seems light years away, all polls show Cianci will be solid opponent regardless of the challenger. The city has changed dramatically since Buddy was last in office, but counter balancing that is that most polls show that 57% of the people believe that the city is headed in the wrong direction.

Solomon, as a City Councilor and now City Council President, argues that he is the only candidate with the

experience and knowledge to run the city day one. Smiley and Elorza have provided positioning papers, ideas and plans that could fill a library passionately argue that the city needs outside leadership and a new vision.

Jorge Elorza Jorge Elorza has staked out the theme of “One Providence” because he believes that the “City’s future rests on the recognition that your success is my success. For Providence to succeed, we must all rise and succeed together,” he says.

One Providence involves revitalizing the economy and creating jobs.

“Our schools should be the pride of their neighborhoods and the buildings should encourage and promote learning rather than create barriers.”

Elorza wants to increase opportunity for youths by offering the support they need to achieve their potential through creating safe and vibrant neighborhoods where people come together to create and build their community. To do that we need to make the transportation system centered around people, not cars.

He wants to bring all stakeholders to the table, from, “Olneyville to the East Side, from Washington Park to the North End. It means each of these pieces coming together, but at its core, it means collaboration and community.”

“Everyone should know a police officer and new officers should be incentivized to live in the city. All of my department heads will have to live in the city. And, there will be more diversity and women,” he adds.

“Perception is reality and we have a ways to go,” he explains. “People need to feel safe in the city.”

As a success story of the importance of public education himself, Elorza is fully committed to the creating a culture of excellence in all of our schools throughout the city. In addition, he wants to put added focus on the port and reverse the “brain drain” by creating new economic engines, possibly in industrial design.

There will be a 311 number for texting, calling or emailing any city problem, a “customer service” desk in City Hall, an economic development concierge (an advocate) to streamline projects and navigate minefields and a Chief Innovation Officer to work on creating new business opportunities.

Jorge believes that with his base and given the diversity of the city, he can win the primary and is the best candidate to stop Buddy in the general election. “I’m the only candidate that’s as comfortable speaking in South Providence as I am on the East Side,” he argues.

Jorge Elorza, 37, grew up on the West Side, the son of Guatemalan immigrants. Today, he lives in Silver Lake. He is the product of public schools, CCRI, URI with a degree in accounting and is a CPA. He was an auditor before returning to Providence after a friend was murdered and then attended Harvard Law School. He was a staff attorney for RI Legal Services. He is on the faculty of Roger Williams Law School and became a Housing Court Judge in 2010, where he became nationally known for holding major national banks accountable for their mishandled loans.

Elorza has served on the board of The Rhode Island Foundation, The Miriam Hospital and the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University.

Brett Smiley Brett Smiley is a progressive democrat and a political newcomer by Rhode Island standards, having moved here in 2006. His campaign has been about plans for the future and intensive direct mailings of position papers have outlined many interesting ideas and changes.

Smiley comes across as likeable, bright and thoughtful – not usual qualities in RI politics, but he was also the first and most vocal of the candidates to tee off on former Mayor Buddy Cianci’s intent to run. The skirmish earned him added respect

in certain circles and showed that he was principled and willing to get in the ring with the big boys.

Chided for being a “policy wonk” by his opponents, he counters “policy matters. “Providence needs a good and sensible urban policy to have positive growth.”

His strong East Side base has seen a little erosion, but he has picked up ground in other parts of the city and he’s feels he is “well positioned for the final weeks.”

He feels he knows the inner working of city government better than anyone since he has worked for both Mayor David Cicilline as an advisor and a lobbyist and then for Mayor Angel Taveras who also selected him to head the Providence Water Supply Board.

“Angel did not fix the entire problem, obviously. He bought us time,” Smiley explains. “I am the most fiscally responsible of all of the candidates. We have to completely de-politicize City Hall and restructure the way that we promote economic development. Tax stabilizations play a critical role in development but they have to be restructured to phase in the taxes as the present structure is unsustainable and places an unrealistic burden on the developer.”

We need more police by district and we need to have a level of fire protection that we can afford,” he adds.

Smiley wants to see investment in “meds & eds” and an increased focus on tourism. “Look,” he explains, “we have a narrow window of time to meet the obligations ahead and we have little left to tax or cut. We need better management and leadership that doesn’t owe anything to anyone.”

Smiley is a product of public schools and has a degree and an MBA from DePaul University. He lives on George Street with his husband, Jim DeRentis a real estate broker with Residential Properties.

Smiley runs an accounting and election compliance firm and is active in a number of non-profits including Planned Parenthood, Marriage Equality RI and RI Communities for Addiction Recovery.

Running for mayor after being a city councilor is always problematic because you must defend decisions and problems that you may or may not have known about. “Look, we were all blindsided by what Cicilline did. We couldn’t get access to the real management and finance issues.

We now have a City Auditor who works with the Mayor’s Office and can present a real picture. We didn’t have that before and with no oversight we all know what happened,” he states.

Solomon was elected City Council President the same day as Mayor Angel Taveras was sworn in. As

council president, he worked with the mayor to bring the City’s unions, hospitals, universities and others to the table. With a lot of help, they led Providence through the unprecedented fiscal crisis and onto a path towards recovery.

“Providences is at a critical crossroad. The city needs to grow our middle class, develop our economy and build a brighter future for our children,” he notes. He wants to support small business owners – the backbone of the city’s economy – and create good jobs in the community. Solomon also wants to strengthen our education system by rebuilding city schools, creating first-rate classrooms and creating 2,000 jobs in the community.

“The next mayor must improve the quality of life in all of our neighborhoods. We must reduce crime, curb youth violence, create more affordable housing and invest in our parks, pools and community gardens.”

Solomon was a key player in the reopening of the Davey Lopes Pool located on the South Side of the city.

“I will do more with promoting Providence, streamlining economic development, partnering with nonprofits for programs and expanding our port,” he continues. “And, I’m the only candidate who can hit the ground running on day one!”

Solomon, 60, went to LaSalle and he and his wife Denise live in Elmhurst and recently became grandparents.

Democratic Race for Governor Tightens as Pell Moves Up

By Barry Fain and Steven Triedman Everyone running for Governor in the upcoming Democratic Primary has a Harvard connection, yet the campaign looks like they’re all fighting Yale! What started with convivial ads with candidates riding bikes with their families, posing with their families or telling tales of fighting poverty to gain success is beginning to morph into something that seems to get nastier each week.

Ironically, the candidates represent three of the most capable Democrats in the state, all wealthy (or getting there), all bright and accomplished, and all with track records of successfully putting their skill sets together to help their community. And all three have millions to spend if they choose to. And they are.

GowLocal puts the numbers being spent this year in perspective. In 2006, Democrat Charles Fogarty and Republican Don Carcieri spent $3.8 million total for the entire campaign. The three Democrats have already surpassed that number and we’re still in August.

Here’s a look at the three Providence based candidates hoping to be the first Democratic Governor since Bruce Sundlun was elected in 1990.

that need to be done if she is elected.

“I mean who is this lady who sits quietly in the car, rides mutely on a bike with her kids?” they jokingly ask.

Well according Raimondo, we should see a return to the “Gina” that performed so heroically in making the pension reform program in Rhode Island a model for the rest of the country. The problem is that the people who vote in primaries are often quite different than the ones who vote in the general election… more conservative, more committed to the status quo and Raimondo undoubtedly is trying to craft the appropriate message.

So who’s the real Gina? Someone who by her own admission likes to think big and has proven when she does, she’s also capable of getting her ideas implemented. Cue the fluttering flags raised in support of her pension reform success. She of course modestly ignores the praise and shrugs “we really didn’t have much of a choice.”

You see another example of her big thinking when we ask about the I-195 project. “I’d tackle it like the way Mayor Bloomberg did in New York with Roosevelt Island. New York wants to diversify and not be so dependent on the financial industry. So they have leveraged some land they had on the island… like we have here in Providence… and put out a global RFP to build a huge new technical campus for the city. Teknion in Israel was one partner. And Cornell outbid Stanford and became the other.

Huge private donations have been added as well. Why can’t we do something like that, on a smaller scale of course, but use RISD’s industrial design capabilities as one part of the partnership.

And why not pitch Stanford? They still want to be on the East Coast. We’ve got Brown. We’re near Harvard. I’d be one of my first phone calls if I’m elected.”

Her business acumen is apparent in some of her other ideas. “Sure I’d be willing to up contributions to cities and towns. They need it. But I might not give it them unless they attained certain incentives consistent with what the state needs in terms of efficiency, regionalization and the like. It’s the way businesses do it. So should we.”

So over the next few weeks look for

more of the Gina Raimondo that gathered so much national attention just a few years ago. Her detractors point to her cozy relations with Wall Street.

Many of her supporters suggest it’s what we need more of.

clay Pell It’d be difficult to find a more awkward entrance into the political arena than the arrival of Clay Pell. His car… make that his perceived loss of one… will remain one of those indelible “only in Rhode Island moments.” And as recently as mid-June, his numbers, despite his iconic grandfather, were at a frighteningly low 12% with both Raimondo and Taveras up closer to 30%.

How do you overcome that kind of gap? Easy. Spend a million bucks. Stay close to your movie star quality wife.

And stay on message: “New ideas. No outsider money. And prepare Rhode Island for Tomorrow.”

The specifics are a little more vague and are focused on some in-depth plans that are part of a master book he has prepared. They promise to build on our state’s advantages… the proximity of our waterfront, our oceanographic traditions, our vibrant immigrant population and, in some cases, the contacts that they have in their home countries.

One of his more ambitious initiatives is a plan to create a statewide internship program that would match high school seniors with commercial intern positions so each child would experience the reality of working in a real world environment, even if just for a short period. One of his more controversial plans, at least here on the East Side, is to seek the recall of the recently enacted estate tax deduction. The original justification was that the state needed to be competitive with its neighbors or risk losing wealthy retirees and their tax and charitable contributions to other states. Pell would redistribute the savings to address more specific working class needs.

But perhaps what has also been somewhat underestimated is the degree to which Pell has incorporated a vibrant “ground game” into his campaign. Some 25 Obama-experienced organizers have been working through-

out the state to create get-out-the-vote and meet-and-greet events to help the campaign. Since this is a primary, they are identifying party loyalists likely to vote and for whom the Pell message of new ideas and independence from lobbyist interests will find resonance.

As a result of these efforts and the massive television campaign that has been unleashed, the next round of public polling results will show that Pell is now very much in the game. Much of his success has come at the expense of Mayor Taveras which explains the negative ads he has begun to run singling out Pell. The first salvo seems a little heavy-handed, making fun of Pell’s nervousness the first time he was asked about his Rhode Island roots. You might question whether young Mr. Pell has the skill set to prevail. But should you make fun of him? In a few weeks we’ll see who gets the last laugh.

Angel taveras It’s a question of which has cost Taveras his early lead in this three-person sprint to the primary: Pell’s huge advertising surge or the recent bad press about violent crime on the Hill. But at least some good news is coming. The potholes are going. The Mayor himself bristles at the criticism that has been heaped on both him and the city for the sad situation. “We’re now into our second year of paving roads here in Providence and when we’re done, we will have done more new roads in two years than have been done in the

previous ten years combined. And the difference is we are finally repaving them, not just patching them. And this time they’ll last.

So why does the Mayor think he’s the best candidate for the Governor’s seat? “After what we went through in Providence, I like to think I’ve proved I have the experience to do the same thing on the state level. I’m hoping voters will carefully compare my record and my abilities again my opponents.”

And if elected, what would a Taveras administration plan to tackle in its first hundred days? Job training would be the Mayor’s first priority. “According to a recent article in the Journal, the state reports that there are 10,000 job openings right now and yet we have 50,000 Rhode Islanders out of work. We need to insure that we are providing the necessary job training to insure those jobs can be filled right now. What a difference that would make in our state’s economy.”

Also high in a Taveras administration would be to expand tourism into our state. Citing the natural beauty and the professionalism of our tourist industry, he feels this too would add immediately to our state’s bottom line. A third leg of his solution is to continue the restructuring of the EDC to insure that the monies we loan out be targeted for many of our own local businesses that are good at what they do and are more likely to stay here if they are successful.

But of particular interest to the Mayor is education. Ask him a question in this area and you have his attention and his commitment. “I hate to see our educational system here labeled as K to 12. What it really needs to be is ‘cradle to career’.”

Himself a case study of what education can do, the Classical graduate went on to excel in college locally and then went on to Harvard Law. He is committed to making sure Rhode Island is a state that allows others to follow the track he was able to take.

For right now, he’d borrow $10 million in Providence schools and hopefully build on that as the economy strengthened.

The election battle between current District 1 representative Edie Ajello and newcomer Nathanael Hannah echoes an age-old innocence/ experience dichotomy. Ajello is obviously experienced; she’s represented the District for the State House for over 20 years and has held key positions in numerous committees including the powerful Judiciary Committee – which she headed. Hannah however, is green.

He’s an innocent in terms of political background but he also offers a very different set of skills than his opponent.

Ajello obviously has an intimate knowledge of how the state political system operates and has introduced major bills. She is a huge proponent of women’s rights, voted to increase minimum wage, was in favor of marriage equality and works with various organizations including the R.I. Council on Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse and Volunteers in Providence Schools.

Most recently, the New Jersey native voted to eliminate the master lever from RI ballots (to go into effect in 2015) and she’s worked to update the Access to Public Records Act, making it clear which records public individuals have access to.

Most pressingly, Ajello wants to see ethics reform. She wants legislators to be governed by the ethics commission, especially when it come to speech and debate, although she “had to vote against the legislation that came to the house from the senate this year, because it was not supported by any of the groups that are so eager to see ethics reform – Common Cause, League

of Women Voters and Operation Clean Government were all opposed to that so called compromise.”

Nathanael Hannah, however, believes that Rhode Island gets a bad rap regarding ethics and corruption.

From within the bowels of the Coffee Exchange Hannah states, “I don’t think RI is any more corrupt/dishonest than any other state. Because we’re a smaller community, there’s a greater focus on this issue – everyone know each other, we’re the “brother in law” state. So word spreads faster here. Other than that I think RI operates fairly well for its size.”

Nate grew up in the East Side on Laurel Avenue, went to school in East Providence and attended college in Newport. He is the Operations Executive at a laser-manufacturing firm and while he does not have a political background, he believes his intimate business knowledge paired with a passion for Providence makes him a solid candidate.

“It gets to a point where you stop talking about change and want to make a difference. And in this particular instance the person that I’m running against has been there for 20 years.

When you look at change and see that degree of repetition, something has to be done.”

In terms of policy, it’s obvious that Hannah approaches issues from a business standpoint. “RI benefits because we have great access to water, we have Quonset, we’ve got airports and we’re on I-95, so we are in a key location shipping wise. RI has to figure out what we are. A fundamental basis of starting/owning/running a business is you have to have an identity. Once you have an identity then you can allocate resources towards marketing…

And I think RI really needs to focus on that niche if it wants to be successful. “ Hannah insists that he is very similar to Ajello in terms of progressive ideals.

Where he believes they differ is in their approach and their respective representations within the community.

“I’m not sure people actually know who she is… and if elected it would be almost a seamless transition apart from

the fact that I’m more financially and pro-business focused… I want to make Providence a destination. “ A splash of controversy taints the District 1 campaign cocktail. Before Hannah could officially be called a candidate, Ajello challenged his signature papers believing there might be a chance that Joseph Paolino Jr. was attempting to manipulate Hannah into office. Six of the signatures endorsing Hannah were from Paolino Jr. and his family, and according to Ajello, he also apparently notarized his own signature.

But Hannah is not impressed. “I think it’s bush league,” he exclaims. “The fact is I had 150 signatures of people that reside on the East Side of Providence.

Of those 150, 58 were in our district, registered owners; she challenged six, She thought I had 56, but I had 58 so the whole thing was a waste of time.

It scares me when somebody wants to avoid competition, because I think competition – at least in terms of private markets – makes things better because it forces people to put out a better product… the whole point about it was so that voters would have a choice.“ Fundamentally, Ajello undoubtedly has a better understanding of our state’s political system than her opponent.

However, Hannah offers a distinct skill set in finance and business that could be of help to our state’s struggling economy, but what else can he do as only one vote within a 75-seat system?

Maturity vs. youth, experience vs. (political) innocence… come September 9, the voters must decide which is more beneficial to the district.

Three Newcomers Vie for Vacated Fox Seat

By Elyena “Nellie” de Goguel On March 21, the FBI descended on Gordon Fox’s home like a band of mosquitos looking for blood; they arrived, sucked up whatever information they could gather, and quickly departed leaving behind a cloud of confusion and unresolved issues. Almost immediately after, Fox resigned as Speaker of the House and now for the first time in over 20 years, a freshman politician will represent the residents of District 4.

Three very different democratic East Siders are hoping to fill Fox’s empty seat: Aaron Regunberg, a 24 year old Brown graduate, dedicated community organizer and self proclaimed political science nerd; Miriam Ross, a lawyer, business owner and Roger Williams University School of Law adjunct professor who is, according to her own campaign slogan, “seasoned, experienced, trusted;” and Heather TowYick, the executive director of Rhode Island’s Teach For America program whose family has voted in the district for four generations. Three candidates ranging in age, gender and experience, yet all share similar, progressive ideals.

But, as was uttered in the film Highlander and which is just as applicable to this situation, “there can only be one.”

Aaron Regunberg came to Providence from Chicago to attend Brown. In 2011 he organized a group of students, faculty and alumni dubbed “Brown for Providence,” which, through rallies, petitioning and outside media pressure were part of a wider communal effort that helped convince the Ivy League institution to give an additional $30 million to the city.

He also started the Providence Student

Union, a nationally recognized non-profit that brings high school students together to advocate for the changes they want within their own educational institutions.

An ideal of empowerment is at the core of Regunberg’s campaign: in terms of criminal justice, he wants to see a greater investment in after school/ job programs for our state’s youth, a proactive approach he is already familiar with from his work as a member of the Board of Directors of the Billy Taylor House where these types of programs are already in effect. In education, Regunberg wants to change what he believes is a top down, compliance driven culture – something he’s witnessed first hand from his work with the Providence Student Union. “We’re not providing students with the critical thinking skills they need to succeed.” says Regunberg during a conversation at Seven Stars Bakery on Hope Street.

“In order to do that, we need to take a more prudent than profligate approach to standardized testing; we’re sacrificing learning for what students call ‘drill kill bubble fill.’ ” Regunberg is a strong advocate for bottom-up, grassroots driven legislative and policy adjustment he believes he is the only candidate who has the necessary organization and communication skills to make a distinctive difference in a house of 75 votes, a belief that is supported by numerous influential community members: Clean Water Action, the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats and District 1 State Representative Edie Ajello are just a few who are advocating for Regunberg.

Experienced.

Trusted.”

These are the traits that Miriam Ross believes differentiate her from the competition. Out of the three candidates she is the most knowledgeable when it comes to working with businesses, both as an in-house attorney at multinational corporations like GTECH where she was involved in drafting ethics policies (among others), and as an owner of her own law firm where she represents small business clients. She also teaches a number of courses at RWU School of Law specifically dealing with business, politics and ethics.

Ross knows that we need to attract new business to the state, which in turn, creates jobs, revitalizes our economy and boosts our nation-wide image. She believes that one way to achieve this goal is to establish a better regulatory system regarding the convoluted application process businesses have to navigate when applying for permits – something she is intimately familiar with as a chair on the RI Small Business Economic Summit.

In terms of education, Ross explains that we need to take a deep look at the state funding formula and reassess where our resources are actually going.

While sitting in her office on Elmgrove Ave, Ross states, “I will get Providence and District 4 its appropriate share of state aid through the formula.” She is not a proponent of the current system of standardized testing, but she does concede that assessments, when used as a constructive measure and not as a punitive one, are necessary when determining achievement and success within schools.

Ross is also the most vocal when it comes to investing in alternative means of higher education; she explains that college is not everyone’s first choice and that its imperative to our state’s economy that we invest more in curricula that foster learning in “para-professional” and industry-specific jobs.

Heather Tow-Yick has the deepest connection to District 4 – her family has voted in the area for over four generations and Tow-Yick herself attended school on the East Side. Education is obviously Tow-Yick’s forte – she heads Teach for

America in Providence, has worked in the educational field for over 15 years, and has garnered a comprehensive track record in terms of establishing achievement within classrooms.

Unlike her opponents, Tow-Yick supports standardized testing and sees it as a helpful indicator of achievement.

From a corner table at the Three Sisters café, Tow-Yick states, “we do need to know and compare how students are doing across cities, towns, states, but it should be used first and foremost as a tool for improving practice in classroom teaching. This is the primary goal – compare and contrast then take action based on problems seen.”

Tow-Yick believes we’ve already made some positive steps toward improving Providence’s economy – reducing corporate tax from 9 to 7% and the adjustment of estate taxes - but how do we create an “entrepreneurial zone” for the city? She emphasizes how we need to look to the I-195 land as a great opportunity and model for testing economic development strategies. “We should be innovative on that front – do something different, bold.”

While all three candidates share similar beliefs – all are pro-choice and pro-marriage equality, believe in ethics reform within government and advocate for investment in teachers and youth programs – they each come with a different skill sets.

The winner will face off against Indepedent Ethan Gyles who lives on Rochambeau Avenue. An environmental engineer by trade, Gyles plans to focus his campaign on ethics reform, the environment, economic growth and education.

District that encompasses virtually the entire East Side was pretty much the exclusive enclave of Rhoda Perry. Apparently she thought so too. Two years ago, after initially filing re-election papers, the longtime State Senator suddenly pulled a surprise and withdrew from the race expecting she still would control the selection of her successor.

It didn’t work. A hotly contested battle developed between her choice, Gayle Goldin, and an unexpected second candidate Maryellen Butke. The lively contest was ultimately won by Goldin who captured 57% of the vote.

With a first term under her belt, Goldin now has her own record to run on including several pieces of legislation she sponsored and which were passed, a laudable accomplishment for a first term legislator. Both she and her opponent Chris Wall have backgrounds in public policy and are quite well versed in most things legislative.

Wall was a reporter and newscaster for several years at Channel 10 before becoming a real estate broker for Residential Properties.

Both candidates consider themselves progressives though with different areas of interest. Goldin has become a leader within the Senate for championing programs to help working families. Wall meanwhile is drawn to economic issues like the need to broaden our tax base and job creation.

In terms of specific legislation, the

two candidates have similar positions on most of the issues that will be coming up in the next legislative session.

Both feel the minimum wage needs to be increased significantly, both favor the continuation of historic tax credits, both feel more needs to be done on restructuring the old EDC, both are committed to reproductive and gender rights and both are opposed to convening a Constitutional Convention. The two do have slightly different positions of legalizing marijuana. Wall feels we should move ahead so we can tax and regulate it. Goldin takes a more “wait and see” approach and questions whether the state is capable of providing the oversight and enforcement necessary. While neither is happy about it, both grudgingly feel we currently don’t have an alternative other than paying off the bond holders of the 38 Studio fiasco.

A look at the two candidates, however, does suggest some areas of difference in terms of background, life experiences and priority of issues.

Gayle Goldin For a first term legislator, Goldin is quite happy with what she was able to accomplish in her first term. Of particular significance was her successful sponsorship of a bill to provide temporary caregivers insurance. The law, which took effect in early 2014, provides working Rhode Islanders with up to four weeks of temporary disability insurance (TDI) to allow them to care for their children, parents or loved ones without fear of losing their jobs or savings. Rhode Island became only the third state in the country, along with New Jersey and California, to pass this kind of legislation. A strong advocate for paid family leave, Goldin later went to Washington as a participant in the White House Summit on Working Families where she met the president.

Goldin also introduced legislation that would have mandated a 10% tax on gun sales in the state, the proceeds of which would have gone to fund nonviolence training in public schools. This bill proved to be more controversial

and is still in committee.

She has also been quite active introducing legislation for waivers to improve the affordable health care health exchange in Rhode Island. While our program is already considered one of the best in the country, she feels her knowledge of health care issues will enhance it even more. While the waivers didn’t pass this session, she’s hopeful they will in the future and promises they are fiscally responsible as well.

In terms of why she should be reelected, Goldin says she likes to think she “has been thoughtful and collaborative” in representing the voice of the East Side for the past two years. She also feel her professional background in public policy continues to serve her well in the legislature.

Goldin arrived on the East Side in 1998. Married to attorney Jeff Levy, she has two sons, Zack and Jonah, and lives on Brown Street. After working as a consultant for several non-profit organizations assisting with grassroots advocacy, grant writing and research, Goldin is currently the strategic initiative officer for the Women’s Fund of R.I.

chris Wall Chris Wall has lived an interesting life that had taken him all over the country before he arrived as a news reporter for Channel 10 in the late ‘90s. His background includes jobs selling mutual funds, staffing for Florida Senator Bob Graham, doing development work for Choate, being a film producer for the Discovery Channel and working for local TV stations and newspapers in Wyoming. He also was the press secretary for former Secretary of State Ed Inman here in Rhode Island where he first gained some useful experience in our own State Legislature. He has been a successful real estate broker with Residential Properties for the past ten years.

He feels his varied background allows him a rather unique perspective on how things might be improved here.

One of his top priorities is to help end the infuriating corruption that seems to permeate much of what seems to go on politically in Rhode Island. In

particular, he feels there needs to be a dramatically higher level of transparency to our existing tax policies.

He also feels that there needs to be a broadening of our state’s tax base.

“This may be unpopular but I think there was some merit in Governor Chaffee’s attempts to broaden what’s taxed to widen the net while lowering the actual rate itself. It’s probably fairer and more transparent.”

Wall has also been particular vocal on improving public education.

“We need a 21st century public funding formula that recognizes the reality of the needs of urban education.”

He feels there should be a performance audit of Providence as he is convinced the money is not going to where it is needed…to the teachers rather than the bureaucracy. He cites rhetoric that speaks to the importance of parental involvement in school decisions on the one hand and then allows the closing down of pre-K classes at Vartan Gregorian and the possible addition of students from cross town schools to Nathan Bishop over local parental protests.

In terms of why he should be elected, Wall feels he is the real progressive reformer in the race and that his message of “change, reform, new ideas and new leadership” seems to be resonating with voters who are fed up with the same old, status quo insiders.

Wall lives on Irving Avenue and is a graduate of Middlebury College.

By Steven Triedman In Ward 1, Seth Yurdin, the twoterm Councilman who is currently the Majority Leader in the Council faces a political newcomer in Malcolm Reis but also someone who also has very deep roots in the neighborhood and has been an active part of the community. Ward 1 covers all of Fox Point and a good portion of downtown Providence, but it’s the portion that has very few voters. It does cover the majority of the I-195 development and has been greatly impacted by the infrastructure improvements and street/ highway reorientation.

Seth Yurdin has served two terms in the City Council and has risen to become the Majority Leader. With Council President Michael Solomon running for mayor, Yurdin is the presumptive choice to be the next council president.

“It’s been a challenging term,” explains Yurdin, “between a new mayor and all of the financial issues, but we’ve made great progress.” Among them, he cites improvements to India Point Park, the new boat ramp and upcoming bike path extension, helping with the new handicapped playground equipment at Cabral Park and working with the Parks Department so the school would be able to use it for programs.

He’s especially proud of his success at keeping the Fox Point library funded and open because people in the neighborhood “rely on it almost

every day.” In addition he continues to work through the state cuts that have affected the Senior Center and the Boy’s & Girls Club.

Since taking office in 2007, Yurdin’s legislative focus has been on education, environmental issues and neighborhood quality of life. He sponsored groundbreaking legislation to reduce diesel pollution in the city; led in establishing the position of Sustainability Director within the City, supported the rehabilitation of the historic Fox Point Bath House and successfully advocated for a statewide formula for all Rhode Island public schools.

Prior to his election to the Council, Yurdin was a boardmember of the Fox Point Neighborhood Association. He also volunteered as a shelter manager, working with the American Red Cross in Mississippi immediately after Hurricane Katrina. An avid hiker, he has logged many miles in the White Mountains and beyond.

Yurdin was born and raised in New York, attended Boston University and New York University School of Law, and is an attorney in private practice.

He is 46 and lives on Governor Street.

Malcolm Reis Malcolm Reis grew up in Fox Point and has lived there for most of his life. He decided to run because he believes the incumbent is “out of touch.” “Our current Councilman is reactive… not proactive.

All you ever hear is ‘I’m working on it’ or ‘call my office.’ Unless it’s about taking credit… and then he’s right there.”

“Just look around. The streets are a disgrace. Snowplowing continues to be terrible. Property taxes are too high causing many residents to be forced out,” Reis continues.

The Brown agreement in terms of payments to the City is a “start” but Reis feels they can and should do more. “We gave up a lot, and Ward 1 should have gotten more.”

Reis is focusing on giving voters a clear choice in this primary. He wants to see new RIPTA bus routes in Fox Point, improved schools, more activities for neighborhood kids, more

activities for seniors, graffiti removed and targeted, increased police presence and better control over National Grid, Prov. Water and Cox who seem to dig up streets without repairing them properly.

In terms of his own work, Reis is President of PROcorp, International, a Sports Representation Company that recruits and manages baseball talent from the Caribbean. It is a full service company that signs young ball players, setting up personalized fitness programs to help develop players both physically and mentally for future careers in professional baseball. If appropriate, they arrange for screening with scouts from major league baseball teams and then negotiate the players’ first professional baseball contracts.

Prior to the sports management company, Reis created a financial and development housing plan that raised over a million dollars from local banks to purchase, renovate and rent or sell multi-unit houses for investment purposes. He converted a 1929 fire station into a two story residential unit building that earned historic and community accolades.

Reis lives on John Street. He went to Moses Brown and then on to Campbell University.

The winner of the September 9 primary will be opposed by Republican Michael Long who also was born in the area. He lives at Corliss Landing and is a policeman in Cranston.

take advanced math classes? Even before Nathan Bishop Middle School – the East Side’s only public middle school – reopened in 2009, questions swirled around the neighborhood about the possibility of advanced academic offerings. Now starting its sixth year, the school community continues to grapple with the question of how to serve learners whose academic preparation and ability vary widely.

This question has become particularly acute in math. In the humanities, good teachers create differentiation within the curriculum in ways that suit many different sorts of learners. Math offers less flexibility. Following middle school core math classes, students launch into a standardized sequence: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and then Calculus, which many consider to be essential for admission to selective universities.

It’s not feasible for most high school students to take five math classes in four years, so there’s been a push nationwide to offer Algebra I in eighth grade. In various forms, Nathan Bishop students have had this option, and according to Principal Kimberly Luca, will continue to have that option moving forward.

At Nathan Bishop each year, a smaller group of students was identified as eligible to take Algebra I in seventh grade, thus allowing them to take Geometry in eighth. However, due to factors including the effect of the implementation of Common Core on the district math curriculum and the particularities of Bishop’s daily schedule, Bishop is no longer offering the Algebra I-Geometry two-year sequence. This affects a small group of students, to be sure. In 20132014, approximately 10% of Bishop’s eighth graders were geometry students (nationwide, only 5% of eighth graders take geometry). In comparison, principal Luca shared that more than 40% of Bishop’s students required intervention and support to stay on grade level in math.

The other students took either eighth grade core math or Algebra I. Though the possible lack of eighth grade geometry affects only a small segment of the students, this was an urgent issue for some parents, who advocated that their children should be able to take

advantage of two years of accelerated math in order take advantage of the full range of AP offerings at Classical High School or elsewhere. One less year of high school math restricts the possibility that a high school student can “max out” the math and science high school curriculum, thereby limiting both their pursuit of math and science in college and the extent to which they will appear to be the best possible candidates for admission to those colleges.

A year of problem-solving ensued, conducted by these parents, Providence Public School administrators, and teachers and school leaders from Nathan Bishop and Classical. In meetings, school board testimonies, emails, letters, phone calls and more, the various stakeholders made their positions and needs clear and developed a solution. Starting this school year, a small group of eighth grade students, identified through grades and standardized test scores, will take Geometry as a credit-bearing class through Apex, an online learning system that the Providence Public Schools uses among its high schools to allow students the opportunity to earn missed credits. These students, who are also enrolled in Algebra I as a regular class, will take their online class after school with support of a teacher. Thus far, Nathan Bishop’s staff members have identified four to seven students eligible to enroll in the after-school geometry class.

This is considerably fewer than the 23

eighth grade students who took Geometry last year. Why the lower numbers?

The school’s screening methods have changed, and the Geometry option is a pilot program that needs to prove its success to continue. Moreover, it escapes the notice of no one at all that students taking two concurrent math courses will need to dig deep and work hard to succeed.

Nevertheless, even though Bishop will be the only school in the district to offer any sort of geometry to its students, this feels to some like a work in progress, an incomplete, challenging solution offered to just a few students. Parents with whom I spoke want the district to continue to refine the math options open to middle schoolers so that qualified students can access the full range of the district’s offerings.

It’s clear that Nathan Bishop and other middle schools need to have flexibility to offer a sequence of math (and other) learning that suits their particular students. Superintendent Susan Lusi and other district administrators have indicated that such flexibility will be coming, which is welcome news. Parents and Principal Luca agree that Bishop’s faculty is strong and up to the task. All involved are working to expand opportunities to more students to take Algebra and Geometry while in middle school. When the school community does not have to move in lock step with the district as a whole, this work is likely to succeed.

Smart News Two New High Schools to Open in Providence In July, the Providence Public was awarded three million dollars by the Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Opportunity by Design Challenge to start two small high schools to be opened in 2015. The schools will be located in existing Providence Public School District buildings and will replace seats at existing schools. The new schools will be open to all Providence students and will serve a student population representative of the district as a whole. The schools will take an approach that is both recuperative, ensuring that students catch up to where they should be in terms of skills and credits, and accelerative, using mastery-based learning to allow students to progress and continually challenge themselves on their way to graduating ready for postsecondary opportunities. For those who support small schools, this is welcome news following the closure and consolidation of several of the city’s small high schools in recent years past.

A Spot of Britain in Providence The play’s the thing wherein Providence caught the attention of the Queen – or at least her subjects.

Shakespeare in the City, based at the East Side’s Lincoln School, received a delightful international recognition this summer when it was named as one of the top 10 British happenings in Providence by BBC America (if you’re on Facebook, no doubt you saw the full list, which was shared widely). Since 2009, Lincoln School teacher and Shakespeare in the City founder Martha Douglas-Osmundson invites middle and high schools from

around the city to participate in a collaboratively produced Shakespeare play, performed in the spring with performances from students in all participating schools. Twenty-three schools participated in 2014 at a performance at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

National Recognition for a Wheeler School Graduate For the fourth consecutive year, a graduating senior from The Wheeler School has been named by the U.S. Department of Education as a Presidential Scholar, one of the highest recognitions an American high school student can receive. Tim Clancy of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, was chosen as the male recipient from Massachusetts this year. This is quite an honor – only one boy and one girl are chosen from each state. Presidential Scholar recipients have “demonstrated leadership, scholarship, contribution to school and community, and outstanding accomplishments in the arts, sciences, humanities and other fields of interest.” Each year more than 3,000 candidates are identified for possible inclusion in the selection pool. An Eagle Scout, Clancy is also the recipient of a President’s Environmental Youth Award, a George Washington Honor Medal for community service and was a finalist for a National Merit Scholarship. He is an accomplished computer programmer, running his own gaming server.

He also created a greenhouse from recycled plastic bottles, which he donated to a local nonprofit, New Urban Farmers. Clancy is a member of the Cum Laude International Honor Society and will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall.

our street not long ago. He was in Providence filming a movie, and I guess he thought the brick and cedar house at the top of Irving would be perfect for a scene. I couldn’t be prouder. I live on Irving and to think that one of the greatest filmmakers in the world found our street attractive is truly gratifying.

I can’t wait to tell my mother.

I know, the tumult surrounding him has turned some fans into haters, but I’ll confess: I love his movies. Blue Jasmine.

Manhattan. Hannah and Her Sisters.

Annie Hall. How can anyone doubt his comic genius after watching him corral wayward lobsters with an oar in that kitchen scene with Diane Keaton?

I mosied up the street around four.

As I write, secrecy surrounds the movie. There was no title, at least for public consumption, and no details about what the movie was about. Rumors circulated that it involves academics, and we all know college professors and leafy neighborhoods, like the East Side, go together in motion pictures.

Lots of people wearing headsets and clutching iced tea from Starbucks were rushing about looking important. Big trucks were parked curbside. Cameras were perched on cherry pickers as high as swamp maples. I like watching a movie crew. They’re probably former and fledgling actors who want to stay in the biz, like the guy coiling wire on the Woody set. He

reminded me of a young Paul Newman.

“Welcome to the hood,” I said.

I plopped down on a neighbor’s stone wall – sorry for trespassing – across from the house. The number said “51.” The house next to it said “9.” This was a puzzle. I guess Woody & Friends changed the address for the movie.

God is in the details. I was admiring a lipstick-red vintage VW beetle that was not part of the set when someone muttered, “Hey, Mr. Allen!’’ I looked up, but was too late. I saw his backside briefly as he entered 51. Distracted by a bug, I had blown my chance for a frontal view.

Still, I stayed. Honestly, it was kind of neat to be on, uh, see a movie set. Really, you’d have to be a real cynic to pass up this opportunity on moral grounds.

Crew members provided plenty of dialogue: “Turn the dolly this way.” “Drinks are in the cooler.” “I’m from Barrington, not New York.”

At 4:44, Joaquin Phoenix, one of the stars, emerged on 51’s porch, taking a long draw on a cigarette.

He flicked something in the bushes – tsk-tsk – and rushed back inside.

It looked like he was wearing a five o’clock shadow. Relief swept over me.

Maybe the wait was worth it: I had seen someone of importance.

A guy wearing a Bruins T-shirt asked the gawkers to hush – “Please.” Then he shouted “Roll, rolling!” A frantic search on my part ensued for the actors. Were they hidden behind a large

truck for privacy? Clever. The guy shouted “Cut!” and we all exhaled in a deeply yoga-like way. After many rolls and cuts, I finally realized they were filming inside the house and wanted absolute quiet on Irving. A baby’s cry pierced the stillness. Bananas.

A grim reality set in, along with existential anxiety: Why am I here, hanging with techies? Just when I was about to bolt, Woody made a grand entrance.

Down the front steps he came, bedecked in the usual: a tastefully wrinkled powder-blue button-down, twopleated khakis and sensible shoes with thick soles. His trademark floppy bucket hat was stuffed in his back pocket.

I thought surely he would flee the bright lights and rush back inside 51 for solitude. Instead, he embraced his cell.

He paced Irving like an Italian prince, chatting for a solid ten minutes. I scribbled down notes: “belt too big, palecolored socks, more hair than expected, out-toes when he walks, so very thin.”

It was one of those strange moments when reality, make-believe and magic get all mixed up. “There he is!” said a friend who had come late to the party and was gleeful when she spotted the decorated artist. “Looks just like Woody Allen.” What can I say? Gawking at Woody was totally crazy, irrational and absurd, but, honestly, I needed the eggs.

August 2014 dear neighbors, i am happy that i was a part of passing good legislation in the General assembly these past two years. here are just some of the highlights: • on august 1, 2013 marriage between same gender couples became legal in rhode island. it was a thrill to sign the marriage equality bill as chair of the judiciary Committee and to stand on the state house steps and watch the governor sign the bill into law. Through may of this year 678 same gender couples were granted marriage licenses. it has been a special pleasure to take part in the marriage ceremonies of four friends. Thank you for putting me in the position to be part of the marriage equality effort.

• The infamous master lever or straight party voting option will be a thing of the past in 2015.

• The resilient rhode island act will bring state departments, local governments and green businesses together to better prepare for severe storms, to minimize damage while also working to decrease our contribution to global warming. The prediction is for thousands of new green jobs which will grow our economy making this a win/win for rhode island.

• another new law will protect our privacy on social media (facebook, linkedin etc.) by preventing employers and educational institutions from requiring access to employees’ and students’ accounts.

• food waste from the largest producers will be diverted from the waste stream and composted or fed to hogs. This is another win/win as useful products will result and the life of the landfill will be extended. over coming years this program will expand. but, there is much more to do: • a bill called Child safe Zones was overbroad in requiring all employers of facilities serving children to check all employees, contractors and sub-contractors to be certain they’ve never been convicted of a sexual offense against a child. statutory rape is the crime of intercourse between an individual over the age of eighteen and another between the ages of 14 and 16, under the age of consent. one convicted of statutory rape could not do accounting work off site, nor could one with such a conviction work at paving a parking lot in off hours for the facility. i had to speak and vote in a small minority against the Child safe Zone bill.

• The constitutional amendment regarding the ethics Commission’s authority over members of the General assembly presented to the house judiciary Committee was not supported

by Common Cause, the league of Women Voters or operation Clean Government. my vote in the minority against the proposal was one of only two. We can and must do better. i look forward to continuing my work representing you at the state house, continuing our efforts to protect civil liberties and to create more open and accountable government. i humbly ask for your vote in the democratic Primary on september 9. sincerely,

Parmesan appetizer ($12), served in a cast iron crock with peppered crostini. It was hearty enough to be satisfying but not grease-laden like some versions.

Earlier, we’d enlisted our waitress’ help to decide between the fried dough appetizer and the Eggplant Parmesan. To our surprise, the chef graciously sent out a sample of the dough. On the menu as Pizzette Fritte ($9), the large pillow of dough is topped with Pomodoro sauce, a touch of cheese, a drizzle of oil and a sprinkle of scallions. The sauce was especially good – fruity but not too acidic.

Rosalina’s chic design features huge family photos and retro globe light fixtures. So many touches evoke family and home cooking: our warm and friendly waitress, the kitchen’s fried dough gift, the bold gingham napkins.

It’s clear that owners Lauren Lynch and Tom Bovis take family seriously and want you to feel like part of theirs.

As we worked on our appetizers, we ordered some wine. Along with a bottle and glass list, Rosalina offers

two wines on tap ($6/glass). A Chenin Blanc and a Grenache, both from California, are supplied by Richer Pour in Boston. Not only do these stay fresher than recorked bottles, but they also eliminate waste. Apparently, a keg of wine saves 44 pounds of glass and 26 corks. With the enthusiastic after-work drinking taking place at Rosalina’s bar, it certainly makes a difference.

For my entrée, I ordered the Cioppino Seafood Stew ($23), a large, garlic crostini in a shallow bowl was topped with a tomato broth and plenty of swordfish, calamari, clams and shrimp.

The broth had a nice subtle spice. My husband ordered the special, a Pine Nut Encrusted Statler Chicken served with broccoli rabe and a plum and cherry relish ($19). It was creative, but I think he preferred the Grilled ThickCut Pork Chop ($23) with sautéed vinegar peppers and cherry tomatoes that we tried on an earlier visit.

Too content in our breezy spot, we ordered dessert ($6). A chocolate cake

layer round was topped with a cylinder of chocolate gelato, the plate graced with a large dollop of Nutella.

I’m hesitant to admit that I went to Rosalina on opening week and didn’t get it. The menu was homey, the décor almost sexy. A few months and visits later, it makes sense. Imagine this: you’re nine, at a friend’s house after school. His mom throws together the first Italian home cooking you’ve ever experienced. Her perfect coif and cute dress seem just as effortless as the tomato sauce. She puts a spell on you, and you never try a plate of pasta that matches up to hers. Rosalina understands that in a city full of Italian restaurants, it’s this charm that will earn repeat visits.

where Aborn Street is, but if you’ve walked through downtown Providence, you’ve probably passed it. It’s where you’ll find the new Italian restaurant Rosalina tucked behind Gracie’s, just out of view from the ornate facade of Trinity Rep. With such perfect weather, we had to sit at one of the outside tables and start with cocktails and oysters. My husband had the Tom ($9), a classic martini made with Tito’s, vermouth and a Tomolive garnish. In the mood for something lighter, I ordered the Satin Doll ($9), a refreshing combination of St. Germain, prosecco and club soda with a lemon twist. The drink’s name is a tip of the hat to the last strip club in the bounds of downtown Providence, practically across the street. Opinions vary, but I think these disparate elements add vital flavor to Providence’s signature spice blend.

We came just in time for the dollar oyster special, available weekday evenings between four and six. Our Matunuck oysters were served with a prosecco mignonette and a charred lemon. The charring was not only visually interesting, but also gave the lemon a deeper, sweeter, flavor.

A bread basket was served with a large spoonful of Narragansett Creamery ricotta and olive oil with pepper flakes. The oil comes from the owner’s family’s olive groves in Kalamata, Greece. The accompaniments were great; the bread was okay but not so good that you’d ruin your appetite over it, which is fine by me.

Though it’s on the Insalata menu, the Burrata Cheese with orange, grapefruit and honey lemon oil dressing ($12) was more tantalizing treat than health food.

Burrata is a decadent Italian cheese: fresh mozzarella wraps around a creamy, sometimes buttery, core. The citrus fruit was plentiful and a good foil to the creaminess. We also had the Eggplant

Nerve Wracking Art This month, the RISD

Museum’s Design the Night event celebrates the opening of What Nerve! Alternative Figures in American Art, 1960 to the Present, an exhibition that will run from September 19 through January. What Nerve! is actually four mini-exhibitions based on important shows, spaces and groups in places outside the artistic mecca of NYC: Chicago (The Hairy Who); San Francisco (Funk); Ann Arbor (Destroy All Monsters); and Providence (Forcefield). These movements in art are linked together by six influential artists: H.C. Westermann, Jack Kirby, William Copley, Christina Ramberg, Gary Panter and Elizabeth Murray. The aforementioned artists worked against the modernist grain – they found imagery and ideas from vernacular sources such as comics and pottery, reshaping material from their own environments to tackle topics with both satire and sincerity. Let’s face it: we love our pets, but sometimes the time constraints of the work week make it impossible to give animals the proper exercise they need.

Enter Paws N Claws, a professional dog walking and pet care service started by sisters Amber and Sarah. What began as a part time business after both of them were laid off has evolved into a thriving operation with four other dog walkers and over 150 happy clients. “We asked ourselves what we could do that involved animals,” says Amber. They grew up in a household that took care of multiple pets, from cats and dogs to chickens and bunnies.

Paws N Claws serves all of Providence and most of the surrounding area.

They operate 365 days a year and can schedule appointments from 7am to 9-10pm for final “let out.” Each dog is individually walked for a half-an-hour, or if you have an exuberant puppy that requires more attention, they can do hourly sessions. Some clients only need help once or twice a year when they go on vacation, while others use them daily. The business is completely flexible and works around your schedule.

For people going on vacation – in addition to feeding and playing with your pets – Paws N Claws can administer any needed medications, from pills to sub-cutaneous shots, like insulin (Sarah also works as a registered nurse). Recently a dog stepped on something in an owner’s yard that required medical attention. “Because it happened while we were there, our insurance paid for the $600 vet bill,” Amber says. “Our staff is first aid certified, and the sitter was able to keep the dog calm, wrapped the wound and took him to the vet.” While this is the first incident in six years as professional pet sitters, it reflects their expertise.

Steve Kidd of Moses Brown

Steve Kidd Teaches Theater and Other Life Lessons at Moses Brown Veteran actor Steve Kidd has played a wide array of characters, including that of a dragon slayer – in kindergarten!

The former Education Director at The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, Steve came in this month to Moses Brown School, where he will head the Middle School’s drama department and direct the Upper School’s two plays each year.

A Shakespeare aficionado, Steve will remain a resident actor at The Gamm.

What drew you to Moses Brown?

“I’ve been working in Pawtucket and Central Falls schools for the last ten years. When I directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Moses Brown last fall, I was impressed by the staff… and

student engagement,” says the newlymarried Steve. “The new performing arts center that will be built is exciting.”

What’s on tap for this season?

“I’m still trying to figure that out,” he says, laughing. Steve, a playwright, acknowledges that mounting productions at Moses Brown might be challenging.

“You have really big casts; it’s important to make sure that everyone’s time is worthwhile,” he says, adding that risqué plays or those with a great deal of violence, including some of Shakespeare’s works, might be unacceptable at a Quaker school. “We’ll have to navigate… what Moses Brown is about, but I think it’s important to push back a little.”

Acting and teaching acting are different – how do you teach acting?

“So many actors are good teachers because they’ve had good teachers,” explains Steve, a resident of Oak Hill. “It’s an active craft that needs human contact,” noting that it’s an amazing tapestry of tradition that we receive from our elders and hand over to younger actors who will replace us. “Acting is such a part of who I am and how I see the world,” Steve says. “It’s kind of second nature for me to share that. Acting is teaching, listening, responding.”
