in Providence may have to absorb a second property tax increase in as many years has not made for happy campers here on the East Side.

While the increase is modest, what was particularly frustrating is how the council seems to be gaming the system to ram it through. Transparency? Open discussions? Consideration of alternatives? Apparently of no concern.

Here’s how it all began. Last year the City eliminated the homestead exemption for owner-occupied homes, replacing it with two rates: one for residents who live in their homes and a second for those who don’t. Meanwhile another decision was made a little later to freeze the City’s commercial tax rate; certainly an appropriate call given our commercial tax rate is already the highest in the country.

So when lobbyists came to the council looking for a reduction for the non-occupied homeowner group

(supposedly to help tenants), there needed to be a corresponding increase in owner-occupied residences to make the numbers revenue neutral. A new bill was drafted that would lower the non-occupied tax rate from $33.75 per thousand to $32.22 while raising the owner-occupied rate from $19.25 per thousand to $20.14.

Here’s where things got sticky.

Traditionally this measure would have gone to the Ways and Means Committee for public input. Afterwards, a committee vote would be taken and the bill would move on to the full council. Not this time. In what has been described as a “rare move,” the council chose to approve the measure on May 1, the very day it was introduced, by an 11-4 vote.

David Salvatore, council President Michael Solomon and our own two Councilmen Seth Yurdin and Sam Zurier voted against the bill. No public input would be permitted.

Fortunately at last week’s council

meeting, during which a second vote of approval would have made the measure binding, cooler heads prevailed and the bill was remanded to the Ways and Means Committee for public scrutiny.

What the 11 City Council members seem to have forgotten is that owner-occupied homes are the glue that holds the very fragile fabric of our city together whether the owners be on the East Side, South Providence or Mt. Pleasant. To have them subsidize a tax break for non-occupied homeowners threatens to pit sections of the city against each other.

And here’s the funniest part. Because of the size of apartments here, it is actually cheaper to rent on the East Side on a per square foot basis than it is in the rest of the city.

Keeping rents affordable is in everyone’s best interest. But forcing homeowners to pick up a disproportionate part of the tab without allowing any public discourse on the issue certainly isn’t the way to do it.

A Park for Everyone To the Editor: Congratulations to Providence on being one of eight cities nationwide chosen to receive $50,000 in federal funds to promote recreation and environmental education, especially among children. If we are to improve and sustain our urban parks, it is essential that children learn to know and love the out of doors.

It is hoped that part of this education will include raising awareness of a huge threat to the health of one of our conservation districts, Blackstone Park. Many people use this park daily as a place to walk dogs. It is understandable that dog owners want their pets to enjoy the freedom to run at will through the woods. However, the

effect of hundreds of dogs daily running over fragile ground is to damage and even kill the plants whose roots protect the soil against erosion. In addition, the soil is compacted so that rainwater cannot sink in and instead runs off, carrying the rich top layer of soil with it onto the sidewalks below.

Replacing the dead plants is useless unless foot traffic is banned from all but the trails. The shrubs, ferns and wildflowers – including pink lady’s slippers – that have been destroyed took many decades to become established, and protecting them for a few years will not be effective in ensuring they survive once restrictive fences are removed.

It is unfortunate for the community that the Blackstone Parks Conservancy has chosen to work with the Parks +

Recreation Department to maintain the desirable central wooded section as a park for off-leash dogs. Those visitors who are frail, are fearful of strange dogs, or have been attacked by dogs in the woods are reluctant to enter this park, which belongs to everyone.

The fate of this park should be used as a lesson for children.

loon about to burst. “I don’t want to intimidate you by looking at you,” he practically shouts to an already agitated audience, “but I can humbly say there is no better fighter for [Providence].”

Frustrated laughter ripples through the basement of the Rochambeau Library where the second of three mayoral forums is taking place. Six men, all hoping to be the future mayor of our city, sit facing a small slice of Providence’s public – older citizens from the East Side mixed with a handful of bright young things – and no one seems impressed.

We are deep into the second hour of a question and answer session covering topics ranging from crime to universal pre-k to exposed power lines, and the current issue under discussion is the 195 relocation project. It’s become blatantly clear that no matter the question, most of the candidates echo the same themes: community engagement (we can’t get development done if we don’t work together!), making the city more enticing to outside investors (how can we expect to boost the city’s economy and build a beautiful space if businesses have to pay ridiculously high property taxes?) and ending the “know-a-guy” kind of corruption that often makes Providence into a national joke. Even Dan Harrop, the sole Republican candidate, agrees that political transparency and public involvement is key to the 195 development initiative.

So if all of the candidates share the same basic ideals, how are we to differentiate between them? From this writer’s observations, it seems Lorne Adrain is a schmoozer – he can charm an audience with personal anecdotes without actually saying much substantial. Michael Solomon,

City Council President, has experience and a loyal following but who knows what he actually plans on doing?Judge Jorge Elorza is passionate about investment in the city’s future as is evident by his reliance on young campaigners. Harrop is typically Republican in an economic sense (cut spending, deal with our deficits); Brett Smiley continues to point to programs of his that are already in place and pushes the idea of longevity in the position; and finally, there is Chris Young. Young,

who screams and threatens the audience, interrupts his fellow candidates and who blames us all for the sad state of Providence. Why? Because we keep refusing to vote him into office.

Hey, after a few hours of circular conversation in a crowded space where the key words from the evening are “potholes” and “corruption,” Young is a welcome form of entertainment. Unfortunately, Providence’s future is not a laughing matter, and one of these men will one day run this town.

Music Through the Artist’s Eye

A gallery show gives an insider’s perspective on the newport Folk and Jazz Festivals

The headliners of course are the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, which will be held July 25-27 and August 1-3, respectively, in the City by the Sea. The former is already sold out, but you can still experience it right here in Providence. The good folks at Dryden Gallery (part of the Providence Picture Frame Complex) will be offering an exhibit of the photography of Providence native Richard McCaffrey. Richard has

gained a national reputation for his years of covering music festivals up and down both coasts for decades.

This particular show will focus (literally) on the last five years of both the folk and jazz festivals in Newport. We know his shots will look good. Taking a Bite out of East Side Crime?

River Road Redux Several months ago, in response to a petition from a group of nearby residents, an attempt was made to experiment with reconfiguring River Road.

The idea was to restrict vehicular traffic so as to benefit visitors on foot or bicycles. Opponents, on the other hand, saw nothing wrong with the traffic pattern that currently exists. A compromise was tried that would bar cars but for weekends only. Unfortunately the barriers that were set up to prohibit traffic that weekend were removed after the first day so the results were inconclusive. Organizers of this effort are trying to persuade Councilman Zurier to try the experiment again. A public meeting was held on June 12 to hear all points of view with an eye towards creating a final plan of action (or perhaps inaction).

One concession is that vehicular travel would now be permitted at least one way (southward) at all times. To add your thoughts to those expressed at the meeting, contact Councilman Zurier at samforcouncil@verizon.net.

The Rhode Island School of Design Museum will be celebrating the opening of some new galleries as part of the completion of a major expansion of its 1926 Eliza Radeke building. The new space will be dedicated to ancient Egyptian and Asian art as well to showcasing part of the museum’s textile and costume collections. We plan to feature more of the specifics of the new offerings in next month’s issue, but we thought we’d at least whet your artistic appetite. A great community resource just keeps getting better.

Former East Side Resident and Second Oldest Brown Alumna Passes Away In case you missed it, Brown’s second oldest alumna, Beatrice Coleman ’25, a retired local schoolteacher, passed away a few weeks ago at Tockwotton Home. The granddaughter of slaves, Ms. Coleman recalled how black students back then weren’t allowed to live in the dorms and “had to lodge with colored families in town.” A longtime church organist, she regularly used to entertain her fellow Tockwotton residents in Fox Point before the facility was moved across the river to East Providence. Ms. Coleman had no children and never married. As she explained in an interview in the Brown Alumni Magazine several years ago, “I didn’t want no man telling me what to do.

It’s bad enough having a governor or president.” She was a still spry 109 when she passed away.

Apparently there have been several including use of non-approved materials and trying to circumvent lead abatement regulations. The Providence Preservation Society is watching events as well and has expressed concern over the changes taking place in this iconic East Side building. We’ll let you know how this turns out.

Responding to what it perceives as an increase of crime on the East Side, residents gathered recently at an open meeting convened by councilman Sam Zurier to explore the pros and cons of establishing neighborhood watch programs. Police representatives were joined by Jay Tavares from the West Broadway Neighborhood Association and Monica Anderson from Summit and shared programs for crime prevention that are being tried in their neighborhoods. This included efforts to coordinate reports of suspicious activity, monthly follow-up meetings to review specific cases and arrests, and the importance of feeding “real time” tips to the police. For more information about starting a crime watch group, Councilman Zurier suggested accessing his website: www.samzurier.com. Other East Side neighborhood associations are discussing ways to help the police do battle against the bad guys but no new initiatives have been made public.

SNA Wins Some in NMS Project The SNA and its allies were only partially successful in their efforts of win concessions from the planners of a building and 300-space parking lot on North Main Street.

The Providence Plan Commission, at its May meeting, approved the proposal for an LA Fitness health club and parking lot that would replace the former Sears building. The new fitness center will be on the Pawtucket side of the city line and the parking lot on the Providence side.

After residents of Summit, who were joined by members of the UniteHere! union, raised objections to the design of the proposed building and parking lot at public meetings of the commission in April and May, Procaccianti Group, the developers for the LA Fitness chain, made some changes.

The parking lot will have more trees and plantings than the minimum called for by city zoning rules, the lighting will be turned down after business hours, there will be more windows in the building and there will be a few more racks for bicycle parking.

Other Construction in the Works Two major building efforts in Summit other than the new fitness center are moving toward completion.

One is the residential/commercial structure on what was know as Tar Hill at 1261 North Main St. It is the work of Jordan Durham, www.durhampolak. com, D+P Real Estate and Peter Gill Case of www.truthbox.com, Truth Box Inc. It has a ground floor dedicated to retail space and has three two-story townhouses above.

The building is engineered to be “super-green,” Jordan explained, with new double-studded walls that should provide R40 insulation. He said it is “probably the most energy-efficient building in the state of Rhode Island” with a CEE Tier Three rating. With solar panels on

the roof, Jordan said, the building “could probably get net zero” in energy use.

The other is the restoration of Jerry’s Citgo, a stalwart in Summit at 1101 Hope Street, for decades, that was severely damaged by fire Friday, January 31. The fire insurance has come through, according to Alan Edoward, the station manager, so they are putting it back to the way it was since Jerry Bennett, who founded the station in 1947, last updated it in 1952.

“If everything goes according to plan,” Allan said, “the station should reopen on June 26 with full fuel and automotive service.”

Blackstone Parks Conservancy Follow-up – Winter Moths Again As reported in this column in March, “To Spray or Not To Spray,” winter moths were expected to expand along the Seekonk River and in Blackstone Park this year, but no one knew how serious the infestation would be. Now we know – it’s serious.

In early May, tiny bright green caterpillars softly plopping onto the heads and shoulders of volunteers working in the Blackstone Park Conservation District signaled a major attack on Providence trees by the winter moth.

Barely a centimeter long, though they can reach an inch, and no thicker than thin string, the caterpillars appeared harmless – but they were not. Perforated spring leaves in the trees above testified to their appetites.

Community Neighborhood News then swinging from tree to tree on long silken threads to take more bites, the caterpillars made short work of many leaves before they vanished into the next phase of their cycle as pupae in the ground. In Providence, the woodlands of Blackstone Park and Neutaconkanut Hill and nearby street trees were hit hardest, probably tempting the moths with “all that food” in one place, said City Forester Doug Still.

A neighbor on Paterson Street found his oak trees stripped bare. The pest was an equal opportunity destroyer, going after the normally untouchable Norway maples, the invasive trees that cause so much harm to other flora.

With few exceptions, the Boulevard was spared this year but for a weeping cherry that was defoliated. Trees in this predicament will normally send out a second set of leaves.

Nothing can be done about the moths this season, says Doug, but next winter it will be possible for homeowners to spray individual trees though even the most harmless known sprays can kill bees.

Spraying the woodlands however, will not be possible.

The eventual hope for woodland trees, aside from birds or the arrival of another natural predator, may be the parasitic fly Cyzenis albicans, which was first introduced to Rhode Island at Goddard Park in 2011 by the University of Rhode Island (URI). More flies were released in Bristol and Jamestown in 2013, and in Cumberland, Kingstown and Jamestown in 2014.

Botanist Heather Faubert, research assistant in the Department of Plant Sciences at URI, who is managing winter moth bio-control in Rhode Island, speculates that the fly, which is present in Seekonk, may eventually spread to Providence.

The success of this method of control in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts without unwanted collateral damage is encouraging, but takes time.

The Blackstone Parks Conservancy tries to keep abreast of important environmental events that affect Providence woodlands and trees. Please check our website next fall for details on the next stage of the winter moth.

FPNA Opposes PJ’s Pub The Fox Point Neighborhood Association, FPNA, opposed the June 4 application by Paul Voight and John Krikorian, the current owners of the PJ’s Pubs of Narragansett, Cranston and Johnston, for any liquor license at 244 Wickenden Street.

In a letter to the Providence Board of Licenses, FPNA Vice President Daisy Schnepel said the establishment would be “more of a rowdy bar than a restaurant,” based on their existing style of operations, which can be reviewed at their website, www.pjspubcranston.com.

“Together, we have made much progress reducing late night rowdiness and noise from students as they leave bars (at much earlier times of the evening) to cross our residential areas and return to campus,” she explained.

“But, each fall, a new crop of students arrives and such an establishment, especially closing at 2am, would create an impossible situation to control.”

“Not only would such an establishment provide an immediate hardship for our neighborhood, but also it would set a dangerous precedent for Wickenden Street,” Daisy said.

“Currently, Fox Point has small neighborhood bars, not clubs that attract raucous crowds through live entertainment, party bookings, ladies nights

and Sunday Fundays,” she pointed out. “Approval of this application could possibly open the door to a future with loud revelers moving from bar to bar along our neighborhood’s quaint commercial street.”

In closing the letter, Daisy said that such a decision could make Fox Point, like our Downtown – a destination for out-of-towners. “I can assure you, too, that busy officers at the Providence Police Department’s District 9 substation would not welcome approval of this application.”

At deadline, the ruling of the liquor license was unknown.

WAMA Elects Board of Directors The Wickenden Area Merchants Association, WAMA, which also opposed the application of PJ’s Pub, elected a board of officers at its June 2 board meeting.

Elected to WAMA’s first board are Vincent Scorziello, co-owner of Campus Fine Wines as President; Marian L. Clark of Benefit Street Antiques, Vice President; Martha Jackson of Restored

by Design, Secretary; and Edward Hardie of Residential Properties, Treasurer.

WAMA’s membership includes merchants on Wickenden and nearby intersecting streets, according to Vincent. The organization is hoping to take on street beautification projects, plan block parties and advertise (see this issue for their first ad).

EFSB Pressures National Grid Compliance The Rhode Island Energy Facility Siting Board, EFSB, at its May 27 hearing, kept the pressure on National Grid, which had been previously ordered to complete an updated cost estimate and detailed feasibility study by September 30.

National Grid, despite missing past deadlines, pledged to meet the September 30 requirement for a report that includes the results of borings under the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. The utility company has said that these borings are necessary to determine any obstructions, such as bedrock, which would present problems for completing the project.

At the meeting, which was attended by 30 proponents for burying the power lines, National Grid also promised to reach an agreement with Providence and East Providence on a schedule for completing pre-construction work.

Included in this process would be securing required permits and acquiring two small parcels of necessary shoreline in Providence and East Providence.

“We are pleased with the continuing pressure on National Grid to complete its new estimate and feasibility studies

by September 30,” said David Riley, CoChair of Friends of India Point Park, FIPP. Riley, who has led a growing citizens group for 12 years, announced that more than 1,740 people from all 39 RI cities and towns have signed FIPP’s petition.

Our Eighth Anniversary The Neighborhood Discussion Group began eight years ago at a June 2006 meeting of the Wayland Square Residents’ Association on the patio of Starbucks. It spun off into its own identity at a meeting in July at Books on the Square to hear about the just-initiated “Providence Tomorrow” process for incorporating neighborhood consensus into a new Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance (discussed below).

Re:Zoning Providence On Tuesday, May 6, the city Planning Department presented the East Side parts of the Re:Zoning Providence project to update the Zoning Ordinance.

Part of this process started eight years ago with the “Providence Tomorrow” workshops to hear the wishes of the City’s various neighborhoods.

There are a number of general changes to reflect changes in Providence’s social and economic character, such as reduced reliance on parking and the growth of such new enterprises as farmers’ markets. There was also an effort to consolidate all the different zoning chapters and ordinances that now affect property use into single coherent sections.

The Main Changes Specific to the East Side are: • Increasing the blocks between Waterman, Lloyd, Brook and Thayer Streets from R-3 (high density residential) to

Community Neighborhood News C-2 (moderate commercial/residential).

Before the Gilbane project at 257 Thayer Street began, the blocks off Thayer itself were two- and three-storey houses (duplexes and triplexes with stucco or wooden clapboard siding) broken up into student apartments. Other properties around Thayer Street will drop from high-density Residential (R-3) to Residential-Professional to reflect their current use (e.g. legal, architectural and health practices).

• Reducing the zoning for the Sol Koffler/Providence & Worcester Railroad properties around East Side Market, the Salvation Army and the Struever Brothers condominia. Some blocks on Pitman Street will revert from W-1 (Waterfront zoning) to C-2.

The rest will change from W-1 to a new W-2 zone with a less intense commercial/industrial focus.

• A reduction of zoning on North Main Street (once part of U.S. Route 1) to reflect a greater orientation to pedestrian traffic and the new R Line rapid bus between Slater Mill in Pawtucket and Roger Williams Park.

Brown University’s Institutional Master Plan In mid-May, Brown University showed neighbors’ revisions to its own Institutional Master Plan that it would submit on June 17 to the Providence City Plan Commission (again, after this had gone to press).

The most sensitive change for East Siders was the proposal for a new Applied Mathematics lab to fit in between Applied Math’s office at 182 George Street and the engineering buildings that face Hope Street.

This would require the demolition of four existing houses, one facing Brook Street and the others facing the Prince Lab’s large, blank wall across “Manning Walk,” a rather dull pedestrian path from Brook to the Barus-Holley complex.

Mike McCormick, a Brown assistant vice-president for physical planning, said that after looking at the question in several different ways, the university had found no practical way to move and thus preserve any of the houses.

However, he did plan to meet later with the Providence Preservation Society to discuss this issue.

Candidate Forums June was also the deadline to take out nomination papers for the public offices to be elected this year, which will give community groups better guidance in planning guest lists for

mount Hope GCCC (Greater Camp Concerned Citizens) is back in action and is actively signing up members to advocate for the Mt. Hope community: longtime residents and new residents alike can join up through our website and email.

In 1990, Mount Hope resident Horace Mabray gathered his neighbors to advocate for the community they loved, and since then the GCCC won increasing safety and stability for the residents of Mount Hope.

The GCCC ran community clean-ups, Easter Egg Hunts, organized petitions for better city services and invited city leaders to meetings to address the Mt. Hope community’s concerns. GCCC worked diligently within the community to make our streets safer, cleaner and friendlier.

In 2006, the City honored Horace Mabray, a GCCC founder, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his community service. We lost Horace in 2008. The GCCC non-profit community organization went into a period of dormancy for a few years as the quality of life improved in Mt. Hope, but many residents now express a need for the group’s advocacy to re-emerge.

The GCCC is reviving advocacy for clean streets and safe neighborhoods.

Recently, neighbors have noticed an increase in thefts, vandalism and property crimes. Many Mt. Hope residents worry about drugs re-emerging in our streets, near our playgrounds, on our street corners, putting our neighborhood teens at risk. Mount Hope is a place of opportunity, and we must ensure that all our children and residents have access to that opportunity. We cannot let fear or addictions get in the way.

Now is a critical time for re-establishing the resources that the City needs to protect the gains Mt. Hope has made in the quality of life for its

residents: an independent District 8, an active substation and officers in our neighborhoods with time to walk around and get to know the neighborhood.

We believe, with just cause, that when the City combined Police Districts 8 and 9 (Mt. Hope and College Hill/Fox Point), the Mt. Hope community came out on the short end of the deal. A cursory glance at the crime statistics for the two areas will confirm that fact: if you have any doubts, drive by the two substations, Camp Street and Brook Street, any time of day, to see how many police cars are at each station: it will be an eye-opening experience.

We also have goals of inviting experts to Mt. Hope so that our residents know just how to work with city agencies and officials as partners to achieve their goals and how to plan for stable and secure financial futures through home ownership.

We are proud to stand alongside two wonderful neighborhood institutions: The Mount Hope Neighborhood Association (MHNA) and the Mount Hope Learning Center (MHLC). Safe, secure streets are essential to community and educational programming, and we see the role of the GCCC as fundamental to their success. We proudly back the MHNA in supporting the Ban the Box program. Let’s put our neighbors back to work.

Crime Awareness The community meeting organized by Ward 2 Councilman Sam Zurier held on Wednesday, May 21 offered proactive steps to attending residents on crime.

The panel was comprised of Lieutenant Ryan and Captain Stamatakos of the Providence Police Department, Katiuska Perez of the Mayor’s Office, Monica Anderson (Community Liaison at Miriam Hospital) and Jay Tavares (West Broadway Neighborhood Association Board Member and Chair of the Neighborhood

Action Crime Watch). Monica and Jay spoke on the establishment of crime watches programs and how they are maintained. An important element in crime watch is communication – neighbors establish a working relationship with police to provide real time information regarding suspicious activity and crimes being committed. Residents had the opportunity to ask questions throughout the discussion.

Residents have the means to establish a crime watch on their own street or within a block perimeter.

Out of these steps to mitigate crime comes an opportunity to get to know your neighbor, which in itself helps to strengthen our community.

At present, CHNA does not have the resources to establish a neighborhood-wide crime watch. If you are interested in this project, please contact us. We will have crime prevention tips listed on our website.

Any future workshops or meetings on crime watch will be listed in our e-news or on our website.

Safety on Thayer Street With the continued construction of 257 Thayer Street, pedestrian safety is on our mind. The CHNA Board has submitted a proposal for a temporary pedestrian crosswalk across Thayer Street between Kabob and Curry and the Avon Cinema. The Board is also seeking placement of a stop sign at the corner of Meeting and Thayer Streets to encourage the slowing of vehicles.

ickenden Street has always been blessed with an artsy quirkiness that has served it well as Fox Point has evolved over the decades. With the relocation of I-195, the pace of the pressures on the street has intensified over the past few years. The good news is the merchants and residents are developing plans to deal with the changes, many of them the result of the traffic reconfiguration that has clogged the lower part of the street. But let’s start at the beginning.

William Wickenden: The Man, the Myth The Wickenden Street area of Fox Point, now a varied collection of services, stores and restaurants, is a fitting tribute to the man whom the street is named.

William Wickenden was a cobbler by trade who became an early Anglo-American Baptist and one of Rhode Island’s foremost leaders, having served the State in various important positions. He was one of the 39 original Providence settlers who signed an agreement to form a government on July 27, 1640 in what became known as the Providence Compact.

He had a farm on the original strip of land that today is a part of Wickenden Street. According to some sources, he succeeded Roger Williams as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Providence, the oldest Baptist church in America. He later organized one of the first Portuguese-American churches in the area.

That was the good, un-rebellious Mr. Wickenden, who left a positive imprimatur on our city. According to A History of the Baptists Volume II, he later went on to Flushing, where he challenged the establishment there as he aggressively preached and baptized converts in the river until their local sheriff had other ideas and the “rebel was charged.”

Over the years, this part of Fox Point evolved into a heavily Portuguese area, populated in large part by men who took jobs working the waterfront of a bustling city. Wickenden Street became the focal point of the area. Certainly one of the main hubs of the street belonged to Manny Almeida, who grew up to be one of the top boxing promoters in the country and owned a wrestling gym and bar located where ZBar was most recently. The Cape Verdean and Portuguese influences that dominated the neighborhood

are mostly gone from the commercial areas, but still show some residential strength east of Hope Street and south of Wickenden.

The Street Today Today’s Wickenden Street is a veritable cornucopia.

There are eclectic eateries offering Ethiopian, Thai, Japanese, breakfast, crepes, frozen yogurt and cupcakes; shops selling art, picture framing, flowers, pet grooming, jewelry, glasses, fine wine; services like hair and nail salons, tattoos, custom-blended perfumes, pottery classes, attorneys, realtors and tax preparers. Wickenden is home to the city’s only independent hardware store, a smoke shop, a sex shop and a gas station. Whew. You get the idea.

Despite the havoc that road construction has had on the area, the street, its eccentricities notwithstanding, continues to hang tough. There are less than a handful of vacant storefronts and for the first time in a decade, the merchants are finally reorganizing.

Business owners have tried organizing before with little success, but today, led by younger merchants along with some of the old guard, there is a new Wickenden Area Merchants Association (WAMA) and it has big plans. “We look at what Hope Street has done through their association – generating grants and City support, advertising, fairs, festivals and concerts – and believe that we can do this too,” explains Vin Scorziello, the newly elected president of the association, who is a co-owner of Campus Fine Wines.

The exact parameters of WAMA haven’t been fully defined, but the association appears to include all of Wickenden Street and merchants on the cross streets, including Ives and Governor. “About 80% of the merchants are already on board,” explains Ed Hardie, manager of the Residential Properties flagship office in Providence, who became treasurer of the new organization because of his extensive knowledge of the area and, he says laughing, “because I was wearing a tie!”

Merchants Banding Together The Association has met six times (as of ESM press). Cristine DeMarco, a designer at Adler’s Hardware, has been championing the new Walk

Wickenden! campaign that is aimed at highlighting the walkability and the diversity of the street.

The association’s first “situation” has already risen.

An application for a sports bar/nightclub establishment with minimal food for the old Z Bar location was introduced before the Licensing Board in early June. WAMA is opposing it; Councilman Seth Yurdin is having his staff “review the application” but is reluctant to comment. He does say he is committed to “maintaining the character and uniqueness of the District. “The hearing was ‘conveniently’ scheduled at 1pm,” Vin points out with a hint of sarcasm.

One of Wickenden’s biggest challenges to overcome is that many of the businesses on the street seem to be specific destinations that shoppers go right to and then leave. “We have to get people to spend a little more time here to see how diverse and interesting Wickenden can be,” adds Vin. Part of the new plan of action is print and social media advertising. “We’re on Facebook and Twitter and we’ll have a website,” he explains. “We have to drive more foot traffic and more shoppers to the area.”

Though relatively close to a lot of Downtown and waterfront events, Wickenden Street merchants feel they don’t see much crossover. Some people remember the Waterfront Festivals at India Park 20plus years ago that drew tens of thousands of people who parked everywhere and anywhere, but had to walk in, which helped many to actually “discover” Wickenden. “Wickenden Street, except for the Shell Station, really doesn’t benefit from WaterFire or even the [Providence] Flea Market,” on South Water Street, Vin maintains. “It’s much quieter when Brown and RISD are on vacation.”

The current population of stores on the street is an interesting mix of old and new. Adler’s, established in 1919 is the oldest continually operating merchant on the street. Atomic Appliance is another longtime fixture. Joel Flescher, the owner, has operated his store at the corner of Brook and Wickenden for decades: he’s easily the hardest and strongest man on the street. On any given day, you’ll see him out in the street hoisting a refrigerator or any other kitchen or laundry appliance into his truck for delivery and installation throughout the East Side and the state.

Representing some of the newer arrivals is Willy’s Local Foods, located at the corner of Wickenden and Hope Streets, a small grocery store that also serves meals all day and offers healthy, organic, non-processed foods – much of it grown locally – like kale chips. Willy Sherry grew up on the East Side and now lives around the corner on Sheldon Street and saw this as an opportunity to provide a “local, fresh” change for the neighborhood.

Hoping for Positive Change How the major new projects will impact Wickenden Street is a real wild card.

While things remain at the early proposal stage, one of the projects calls for 25,000 square feet of retail space; another proposes 106,500 square feet of retail space. Combined, the two would bring in about four times the amount of retail that currently exists on the whole street. The potential upside, however, is that the projects also lay out plans for hundreds of new apartments and offices that would increase the walking area population quite significantly. Obviously, there is a long way to go before any projects are selected - let alone constructed - in the new space freed up by the Iway relocation.

There is a strong sentiment among merchants of “hoping for the best” mixed with the familiar Rhode Island wisdom of “if and when.” “We need to be focused on today and tomorrow and let the future happen,” says Scorziello.

The entire area west of Benefit Street has been a work zone for a while, creating a constant traffic nightmare. The work is part of the Iway/City Streets contract. This $8.1 million contract will reconnect portions of East Side streets that were in the footprint of I-195. The project is currently scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2015.

up by the highway relocation, while also making improvements that will benefit the residents and businesses in this area. The new design will create pedestrian and bike lanes. Along Wickenden Street, sidewalks will be updated and additional crossing signals will be added. South Main Street and South Water Street will be rebuilt and established as two-lane roadways with parking on both sides. All three will also have bike lanes.

What the merchants, as well as anyone driving through the congested area, want to know is what happens next.

What Happens Next The 195 Commission, known as “The LINK” has five parcels that are up for development that will have a direct effect on Wickenden Street. Two of the parcels are located on the north side of Wickenden (NoWic) bordered by South Main and South Water Streets; the other three parcels are located on the south side of Wickenden (SoWic) to the left of South Main Street. Construction has made a complete mess of the area, but is finally showing signs of progress. Transit Street has been extended and will cross South Main and terminate at South Water and a new street, called Dollar Street, will be between South Main and South Water. Plantings are starting to show up, along with some temporary sculptures, which neighbors are saying is a very good sign.

The 195 Commission declines comment on pretty much anything about the developers who have submitted proposals for future development, but that hasn’t stopped the same developers from leaking their plans to the public. That being said, it is probable that others have submitted proposals for these same sites as well.

Group and Churchill & Banks, both of whom have a history of many successful projects, as well as some grandiose proposed projects that have not come to fruition.

By far the largest proposal is the one by the Carpionato Group, “The Connection at College Hill,” for a $250,000,000 mixed-use development on the north side of Wickenden Street bordered by South Main and South Water Streets. This massive development will have 170,445 square feet of office and laboratory space; 174,105 square feet of residential property; an 85,000 square-foot hotel and 108,593 square feet of retail and restaurant space. To put this project into perspective, it will be almost 100,000 square feet larger than the vacant Superman building Downtown.

The Carpionato Group is best known for its successful Chapel View mixeduse development in Cranston and the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, but has many other commercial projects throughout Rhode Island. They are describing this as a “signature project with vision.”

Churchill & Banks, Richard Baccari’s company, could be the first out of the ground as they already own a parcel abutting the 195 land. The property is on the east side of South Main Street right across from Al Forno. The original plan proposes to build an apartment complex around the old Fuller Iron Works on Pike Street. Known as the The Esplanade at India Point, the project will increase the existing commercial space to 40,000 square feet and add 52 apartments, mostly oneand two-bedrooms plus two penthouse units. There will also be a twolevel parking garage with up to 170 spaces and a roof garden.

On the 195 Parcel, Richard Baccari II, an executive vice president of Churchill & Banks, submitted a proposal independent of Churchill & Banks. He is a principal of Royal Oaks Realty that

would build residential and commercial structures on “more than one parcel” on the East Side but details are sketchy. He is working with a yet unnamed partner. While it’s all talk and speculation, it has been rumored that they had been negotiating with a supermarket.

Additionally, the fate of the old Shooters location remains unclear. The site was transferred from DOT to DEM which will allow a more public use for the space. The most recent proposal called for an amphitheatre, which was well supported by the neighborhood but was not accepted. The DEM was unable to provide details about why it took the Shooters property back and what they now plan to do with it.

National Grid is still keeping the conversation going on the burying of the electrical lines that pass through India Point Park. This “conversation” predates Shooters and is likely to continue for as long as National Grid can avoid actually burying the lines. A generation of Fox Point children has grown up hearing the story of how the lines will be buried.

There are some glimmers of hope however. A petition signed by 1,700 residents and the Energy Facility Siting Board, which is now under the Public Utilities Commission headed by Meg Curran, are both calling for a more proactive response. National Grid is now having its cost estimate for burying the lines updated which is due by September 30. They are also working on an updated feasibility study that will include test borings under both rivers.

Traffic congestion and construction will be a part of the area for years to come and, while it will present challenges, there will also be opportunities. The Wickenden Area Merchants Association is hoping to be positioned to take advantage of them. Given its long and colorful history of resilience, the safe bet is the street will continue to persevere whatever happens.

it’s hard to think of Thayer Street as anything other than an extension of Brown University, but when the students leave and the dust settles, Thayer remains. While the bond between Thayer and Brown is undeniable, that image is only a part of Thayer’s identity.

“It’s a juggling act,” says Donna Personeus, executive director of the Thayer Street District Management Authority (TSDMA). “Some of the pulse is because of the Brown students [and] the energy they bring. But there are families that live a block off of Thayer Street and we want to engage with them.”

What Donna brings to the table is over two decades of experience with marketing and communications, but most importantly, an appreciation and understanding of what Thayer Street is all about. Born and raised in Barrington, Donna made her way back to the Ocean State after studying advertising and fine arts at Syracuse University and spending several years in marketing in Manhattan. For 14 years she owned and operated red door productions, an award-winning video production firm in Warwick, as well as worked as a director of marketing, advertising and communications for many local businesses. In addition she serves as the marketing committee chair for Art Night in Bristol and Warren, a position that bridges her love of the arts with her marketing expertise.

Since joining the TSDMA in January, Donna has been working tirelessly with members of the Thayer Street community to revamp the district’s image. That outreach is key. What she wants is for this new Thayer Street to be a reflection of its citizens and the only way to make that happen is with their input. Along with Kartabar manager Susan Mardo, she has revived the long-dormant Thayer Street’s

Merchant’s Association. She attends the College Hill board meetings, which keeps her fingers firmly on the pulse of the attitudes and opinions of the district. She’s even reached out directly to the community for help in redesigning the TSDMA’s logo, receiving so many submissions that she had to extend the original deadline.

“It’s reaching out to this wonderful, eclectic community and saying ‘be a part of it.’ Be a part of the image that’s going to be here for the next who knows how long,” Donna says. “We want your voice.”

In addition to working as a unifying force within the Thayer Street community, the TSDMA also plays many key roles in the execution of the Thayer Street Planning Study, a comprehensive document that outlines a multiyear strategy of logistical and aesthetic changes required to broaden Thayer Street’s appeal. When Brown President Christina Paxson said in May that Thayer needs “a facelift,” this was what she was talking about. Congested pedestrian ways and a less than welcoming environment for cyclists are among the issues being addressed, as are a lack of green spaces along the street.

One of the first of those new green spaces will be a parklet located in front of the Brown Bookstore. Expected to be installed after Thayer’s scheduled repaving this summer, the parklet will turn one-and-a-half parking spaces into a micro-park, complete with trees and seating to accommodate visitors, which will be in place all year outside of the winter months. Down the road, visitors can expect to see several alleys and even the RIPTA terminal at Fones Alley converted into pedestrian friendly green areas, as well as curb extending “bump outs” at strategic locations, all intending to alleviate Thayer’s notoriously crowded sidewalks.

There are some serious wheels in motion, all of them turning to improve Thayer’s aesthetic while maintaining its trademark eccentricity. This momentum has also spurred a movement to bring regularly scheduled community events back to the neighborhood.

“It’s been a number of years since they’ve had activities and events on Thayer,” Donna points out. “But the focus has changed. The focus is ‘Let’s get excited. Let’s make things happen here.’

Let’s make it a true destination, not just a destination for Brown students.”

The first of what she’s hoping will be many events will be the Thayer Street Fall Festival in September. Organized in conjunction with Festival Fete, the festival will celebrate the changes happening on Thayer Street, but more importantly the people working to realize them.

“Its a diverse group of people that came together,” she says. “Instead of operating in little pods we are working in partnership, which I think is fantastic.”

If the TSDMA is the face of Thayer Street, then Donna, with her years of experience in advertising and social media, is its collective voice, and that voice is calling for a revitalized balance between the Thayer Street as an extension of Brown and the Thayer Street as a part of Providence. As she talks about the Planning Study, Fall Festival and all of the community members actively involved in Thayer’s future, there’s an excited spark in her eyes. For her, and for many in the Thayer community, the potential for something great to be born out of all of these changes is within reach.

“It makes me excited to get up everyday and to work as hard as I can to make this place vibrant, and exciting, and fun,” she says. “I’m pretty much in love with Thayer Street.”

How I miss summer reading. Not the school-assigned sort, but the long, lazy, indulgent days of a great book read for hour upon uninterrupted hour.

When I was a kid – before I had kids – I organized my life around getting to the beach (or lake, river or pool) with a fabulous big book and reading to my heart’s content. When I couldn’t make it to the beach, any sunny spot would do. Books are better in the great outdoors, and the great outdoors are better in the summertime. I still crave my al fresco reading binges, though now that my own kids are on the scene, interruptions abound, and at the beach or poolside, I just can’t quite focus on a book with necessary ferocity because my mama instinct forces me to look up every minute or so to make sure that the kids are staying put and, by not drowning, staying alive.

I’ll grudgingly acknowledge that summer time isn’t reading time for everyone, because not everyone is a passionate reader. My own kids are a mixed bag, ranging from obsessive reader to occasional reader, and I’ve made my peace with the sporadic habits of the occasional reader in our midst. However, for the occasional or even reluctant reader – perhaps especially for that sort – summer is a wonderful time to read. Summer allows time for kids to find and connect to books with which they can establish their own relationships with books of (nearly) whatever topic of (pretty much) their own choosing. For reluctant readers, it’s about quality, not quantity. I’m not a fan of reading contests in which whoever sprints through the most books wins. I’d much rather see a kid read one or two books with care and attention.

Whether the young people in your lives read reluctantly, voraciously or otherwise, we can help by connecting them to great books. Locally, the Rhode Island Children’s Book Award (RICBA) is a great resource. RICBA is a joint project of the Rhode Island State Council of the International Reading Association, the Rhode Island Library Association and the Rhode Island Educational Media Association. The RICBA blog, located at ricbablog.blogspot.com, lists all of the

current nominees, offering a short synopsis and information about the upcoming opportunity for kids to vote at school or a public library for their favorite book (2014’s RICBA winner was Wonder, by R.J. Palacio).

Speaking of public libraries: both the books on the shelves and the helpful human librarians who look after them are wonderful sources for good books. The Providence Community Libraries’ Summer Reading Kickoff is on June 26, 2pm at Rochambeau Library and 4pm at Fox Point Library.

And, of course, you can go back to the internet to find more books that your kids may love. Various online booksellers and recommendations engines are useful resources that help you find titles that your kids may like. However, please try to avoid the temptation to click and buy print copies online. If your kid uses an e-reader, then you’re off the hook. But if not, please consider our local sources for buying or borrowing. We are fortunate to have several independent bookstores and public libraries in our neighborhood, and we don’t want to lose them. As a former Amazon addict, I’ve had to fight my own battle, but out of allegiance to preserving the

experience of perusing the shelves to find just the right book for the next generation, I now buy nearly all of my print books in the 02906 zip code. You can – and should – too.

For some of us, books aren’t always reading’s sine qua non. I have a kid who is passionate about sports journalism, both online and print. Sports Illustrated gets a weekly workout, as do the Providence Journal’s sports section and ESPN’s website. While most reading experts maintain that there’s a place in all of our lives for long-form fiction, the critical thing is that our kids read something, sometimes anything.

Of course, for those of us for whom books are akin to oxygen, that sometimes means everything. If so, you and your kids probably have too many books on your shelves. Share the wealth! Donate well-loved, lightly-used books. Local nonprofit Books Are Wings partners with various local companies and social service agencies to collect such books for distribution to kids in need. And look for me at the beach! I’ll be the one with the book.

Both Hope High School honorees are students of Valerie Kline, who has been a Providence Visual Art teacher for 23 years.

Moses Brown Announces Two New Performing Arts Faculty Members Moses Brown School’s upper school

will welcome two new performing arts faculty in the fall. Steve Kidd, a resident equity actor and the education director at The Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket, will teach performance studies and direct the upper school theater productions. He is a graduate of Colby College and received his Masters in theater from Brown University. Steve has taught acting at Brown, URI, Colby and Bowdoin College, worked with The ArtsLiteracy Project and is currently a visiting lecturer in the Education Department at Brown. Steve initiated the Transitions through Arts Literacy Learning project in Central Falls and created the Pawtucket Literacy and Arts for Youth Program, teaching literacy through the arts to Pawtucket and Providence students. Steve has spent 16 consecutive summers as Program Director for Camp AmeriKids, a camp for children from New York City living with AIDS/HIV. Shura Baryshnikov will head Moses Brown’s dance program, supporting performance as well as the school’s community service activity. Shura is a Rhode Island-based performing artist, educator, improviser and movement designer. Shura choreographs and consults for theatrical productions at Trinity Repertory Company and elsewhere. She has has performed with American Dance Legacy Initiative, Aerplaye Dance, Festival Ballet Providence, Lostwax Multimedia Dance, Elemental Theatre Collective, Pequeno Teatro De Danza and Workhorse Theatre. She is a Theatre Associate in the Brown/Trinity MFA Programs and a faculty member at Festival Ballet Providence School.

A mother’s triumph over her son’s untimely death

This is a story about a wayward son and the mother who loved him. His name was Nathan Davis-Gilliard. Seven years ago, he was gunned down off Camp Street in the Mount Hope neighborhood on the East Side’s north end.

Police say the shooting was related to a longtime feud between two rival gangs. Nathan’s mother, Nancy Davis Wilson, says the murder was a senseless killing that nearly knocked her out for good, as in, “I thought about going to his grave and shooting myself and letting the blood trickle down to the earth below.’’

But she didn’t. She decided to live and then some. A few months ago, the 65-year-old grandmother of 18 and great-grandmother of six graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in human development and family studies. Her minor is even more impressive: thanatology, or the study of death and grief. Yes, there are stages, and, no, there is never any closure.

Most people her age are thinking about retiring. Nancy is thinking about spending long hours with troubled kids who shoot someone because he dissed you at a party. She wants to be a social worker and therapist. Gang violence is turning our city streets into very dangerous strips of asphalt, she says. Shootings are becoming as frequent in the capital city as potholes.

She called him Nathan. “Everyone else called him Nate, except me,’’ she says. The middle of seven children, he was a quiet kid with a sweet crooked smile who would carry groceries across the street for elderly neighbors. The troubles started in his teenager years, as they often do. He got mixed up with a bad crowd, young men who sold drugs and stole cars. He had stints at a residential facility for at-risk boys and prison. Still, Nancy never gave up hope that he would turn his life around. Mothers do that.

The 25-year-old was walking with a friend on Knowles Street, in front of the house where he grew up and played basketball and rode his tricycle. A carload of young men drove up. Shots were fired. His brother heard the poppop-pop and rushed outside. “He lost it,’’ says Nancy. Nathan was lying on his back in the driveway.

After the funeral, the tears and the sorting of possessions, Nancy was alone with her sadness. A calmness swept over her when she thought about killing herself. At the urging of her family, she sought psychiatric help and pulled herself together. In 2009, she got an associate’s degree in criminal justice from the Community College of Rhode Island and then transferred to URI. The professors were kind and wise. They encouraged her to talk to other students about the loneliness and confusion of grief.

She was trembling the first time. The pain spilled out like a bloody wound. She knew she had a story to tell, a powerful one that could reach far. She spoke to inmates at the state’s juvenile detention

facility, school groups and nursing students. At church, she talked to other parents about how to make Providence streets safer – connect kids up with mentors, build recreational centers, toughen gun laws. “These kids need to know that life has meaning,’’ she says.

Some people tell her to move on, to put Nathan’s death behind her. But she never will. A troubled child deserves no less love than the shining star. Losing Nathan was the worst thing that has ever happened to her. Her love for him is as strong as ever. The mother and son are working together now to help the children before they’re lost.

“I’ve always been searching for my purpose in life,’’ she says. “Now I’ve found it.’’

She’s on the mend, but still experiences what she calls “triggers.’’ Not long ago, she read a local story about unsolved murders. Nathan was on the list. “The tears came and came,’’ she says. “They were flowing on the words, and between them.’’ Nancy has left half of Nathan’s headstone blank.

Her name will go there someday, and she will rest beside him.

From El Paso to the East Side Chef Jake Rojas launches gourmet Mexican street food

By Grace Lentini Jake Rojas is originally from El Paso, TX and grew up surrounded by Mexican cuisine. As a teenager, he was in and out of school until he enrolled in the Academy of Science and Technology. There, he joined the Culinary Arts program and the instructors pushed him to compete in SkillsUSA VICA through which he earned a scholarship to the Art Institute of Dallas Culinary Program. Without that experience, cooking never would have been an option for him. Now, after working in kitchens across the country he’s the head chef of Tallulah on Thames in Newport and has just opened Tallulah’s Taqueria on Ives Street.

Why open in Providence?

The opportunity to open in Providence was always something my wife and I had been thinking to do. So when we found the amazing space in Fox Point, it just felt right.

What was your inspiration for opening a taqueria?

Tacos are the food I’m most comfortable with being that I’m from Mexican descent.

How is the taqueria menu different from what you serve at Tallulah’s on Thames?

The taqueria’s menu is much more streamlined but has the same attention to detail with respect for the growers, farmers, fisherman and ranchers that supply us.

What ingredients do you find yourself using again and again?

Onions, chiles and tomatillos are my “Mexican mirepoix.” We use them in everything we do.

Have you spent any time in other parts of the country that has inspired the way you cook?

I think I got my best training in Mexican cuisine by watching my mother and aunts

cook dinner for my family daily. I’ve lived in many cities in this country and constantly searched out the best Mexican cuisine in those areas. I would have to say right behind El Paso, [the best Mexican cuisine] has got to be east Los Angeles.

Tell me about the different drinks you make.

We offer various Aguas Frescas. The agua de melón is made with fresh cantaloupe juice and is one of our staples.

How do you choose whether you use corn or flour tortillas?

All of our tacos are served on double corn tortillas. That’s the only way it

should be. The corn adds texture and flavor. Flour tortillas are for burritos and burritos only.

Do you have any favorite items you love to use?

Limes or any type of acid/vinegar are the most amazing [ingredients] to brighten the flavors of any dish.

I see you have some killer tattoos. Are they food-related?

Some of them are food related for sure. The words vivir para cocinar and cocinar para vivir are my way of showing my commitment to my craft: Live to cook, cook to live.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large roasting pan over high heat, add enough oil to coat the base of the pan. Season the pork with salt and begin to sear until all sides are browned. Remove pork. Add onion and chiles and cook over medium heat until caramelized. Add garlic and continue to sauté. Deglaze the pan with water and bring to a boil. Season the pork with the dry spice mix and reintroduce the pork to the roasting pan. Cover with foil and roast in oven for 4-5 hours.

If we’re playing Taboo and I say sports bar, nightclub and cigar lounge, responsibility might not be your first guess.

Hanley’s Ale House located downtown wears all those hats. But since April, the chef’s hat at Hanley’s sits atop someone pretty big on responsibility, Executive Chef Michael Oozoonian.

Determined to defy the connotations of a sports bar in terms of food, Michael’s sense of responsibility goes beyond just his job description. Instead, he feels a responsibility to the community through food. Michael’s overhaul of the Hanley’s menu and introduction of more local sourcing aren’t so much a rebrand as a prerequisite of him taking the job.

“Farm to fork is a responsibility, not a hook or gimmick,” he says. This responsibility is not just about food quality, but the whole health of the local food community and economy. Michael uses local producers like Schartner Farms, Great Hill Farms, Rhody Fresh and the Rhode Island Mushroom Company not just because they are the best available, but because the whole of the food scene is healthier when your local farmer is in a job. The same goes for seafood, like Rhode Island mussels and calamari. Like his ingredients, the team he has put in place is local, composed of Johnson & Wales graduates.

Do not worry that Hanley’s has gone and got all precious on you. While Michael is emphatic that this is “not the old McFadden’s,” which used to occupy the site, and that he “must do something he can stand by,” he is happy to stand by a sports bar. Just because you are there to watch a game, just because the food isn’t fine dining, “doesn’t mean it should just be slung at you.” The menu is the mix of comfort and pub foods you’d expect, but made with the care perhaps you are conditioned not to. A signature example is the Duo of Pork Belly braised with local honey mustard and mac and cheese.

Everything is made from scratch, from their own ricotta, to salami to sausage, even the condiments.

Michael knows the Providence food scene and his admiration for his former employer, Gracie’s, is obvious, but the lion’s share of his experience was in Boston, at Z-Bar and Boston Chops. He sees opportunity in Providence not only because it’s a chance “to stand out and put his footprint in the city,” but because

Dance Of the Desert The next great film

by legendary Chilean-born director Alejandro Jodorowsky marks the end of his 23-year hiatus: His Dance of Reality, opens Friday, July 11 at the Cable Car Cinema. Starring Brontis Jodorowsky, Pamela Flores and Jeremias Herskovits, the dark semi-autobiographical drama weaves a tale that reflects the director’s own unhappy and chaotic childhood. In fact, the production was shot in the Chilean desert close to where he grew up. In it, a young Jodorowsky is confronted by a collection of oddball characters that contributed to his flourishing surreal consciousness. Blending his own personal history with metaphor, mythology and poetry, The Dance of Reality sets out to prove that reality is not objective but rather a “dance” that’s created by our own imaginations. This year the Dwares JCC has changed their summer camp programming, where campers are now in age appropriate groups as part of one base camp while also having the flexibility to take a variety of specialty electives.

There is the camaraderie of a larger base camp, where the kids assemble each morning in the outdoor group huddle before breaking off into smaller units. The benefit of this design is the exposure kids get to a large variety of activities. So, if they discover that they like something in particular – like gymnastics – they can elect to then do that specialty activity additional times, much like at a traditional camp.

Michelle Cicchitelli, Director of Jewish Life at the Jewish Alliance, explains their ethos, “The whole camp is going to be based on correlating secular and Judaic weekly themes. An example would be Heroes and tikkun olam, which means repairing the world.” The Dwares JCC offers an enriching summer for children of all ages, faiths and backgrounds, centered on core themes emphasizing basic human values. Every day campers get swim lessons in their beautiful pool, plus they can elect a time for free swim. This year more emphasis is also placed on outdoor activities.

And did I mention free lunch? Parents who know the pleasure of having to plan, purchase and pack a lunch everyday will be relieved to know that all lunches and snacks are included as part of the summer camp program.

All you need to do is get your children to the morning huddle on time and everything else is taken care of.

What really makes this summer camp program stand out are the variety of activities, the well-thought out themes and the specialty activities allowing campers the opportunity to pursue something they might not have experienced otherwise. Maor Mintz, a young emissary from Israel , will be on hand again this year to impart the best of Israeli culture and lead nature excursions. You once said that all the wonderful, troubling, outrageous, sad and hopeful things in Rhode Island influence your writing. What’s influencing you now?

The story that was on the (Providence Journal’s) front page a few weeks ago about some friends of Buddy Cianci trying to raise money to commission a portrait of him to hang in City Hall, Kaplan recalls. “That was so perfectly Rhode Island.”

“Every family has them. I think every member of the family suspects what the secrets are and no two family members take on the secrets in the same way. The lifelong relationships with the people in your family are built around these secrets,” says Kaplan, who then revealed some of her own family surprises. “Secrets… force the writer to fill in the blanks and explain the character’s motivation,” she adds.

You’ve said reading inspires you.

Are you also inspired by dinner party or grocery store conversations?

Do you eavesdrop?

“Absolutely, I do (eavesdrop), everywhere. I think you could substitute the word ‘listen’ for ‘eavesdrop.’ I think

fiction is based on a lot of what it is about gossip that also compels us,” Kaplan notes. “Some people say, ‘I don’t like gossip and gossip is harmful,’ but if you simply change the word ‘gossip’ to ‘telling someone’s story,’ it takes a slightly different cast. I (tell) my students to listen for these stories; you can’t make these things up out of whole cloth.”

Given your “listening,” do people assume you’ve depicted them in a story?

“My mother thinks she’s the mother in every story; I have to tell her otherwise…

Dag (a character in one story) is Buddy (Cianci). I consider Buddy fair game; he’s a public figure. To reveal things about other people that they wouldn’t want revealed is dicey, but… you have

to be very brave when you’re writing.

You have to do a better disguise.”

What books are on your bedside table?

“Today, Joan Didion’s Play It as It Lays, (Saul Bellow’s) Humboldt’s Gift and a new collection of short stories by Elizabeth McCracken. I am also reading a memoir called The World’s Strongest Librarian about a huge, huge librarian who has Tourette’s.”
