Can This Superman Really Get Off the Ground?

News that the developer

of the Superman building downtown has sweetened the deal to make the public-private partnership a little more palatable to a citizenry still suffering from Studio 38 fatigue is intriguing. While some are opposed to the concept of any public funds being committed for private development, the reality is that it happens all the time and all over the country.

Sports stadiums are the most obvious examples. Downtown development projects in urban areas are certainly number two.

The new deal brings in a local downtown developer, Buff Chace, as a partner. The restructured plan to turn the iconic downtown building from commercial usage into apartments still seeks some $40 million in public financing aid. The money will be spread over four years though and would only be released when the building rehab is completed and ready for occupancy.

In addition the developers plan to take out a completion bond to guarantee

that the renovations are in fact done.

While these safeguards help create a bit more comfort that the State’s money (and by that we mean taxpayer’s money) will be protected, it is still a subsidy for what in an ideal world would be a private investment. Still the building is such an integral part of Providence history and is so critical to the visual landscape of the downtown, it is difficult to imagine our skyline without it.

We suggest that the deal could be sweetened still further. Since the State is on the hook for a large percentage of the rehab costs and the risks that there will indeed be a market for the revamped building when it is finished, perhaps we also should be allowed to participate on a percentage of the upside should it prove successful. This could be a share of the annual profits or of the profit if the building is sold or refinanced.

But the reality is we simply can’t afford for the building to remain fallow.

Our community needs jobs in the worst

way as our economy remains locked in neutral. It’s not a perfect solution, but the sweetened deal, with performance guarantees insuring completion, a current downtown residential market that remains close to fully occupied and at least the partial presence of a local partner convinces us this is a path we should continue to explore.

That said, with the State involved, there still needs to be oversight and transparency, two items sorely lacking from the Studio 38 debacle. We’d suggest there be an independent evaluation of the project by a non-Rhode Island connected real estate firm.

A year ago the developer said he had to have $75,000,000 for the project to work. Despite that number being cut in half, no bank or REIT has come forward which means the State has to be extra cautious and hire a developer’s representative to monitor the project to protect taxpayer exposure. If all this is done, there’s no reason this Superman project can’t fly.

Letters Built on Value To the Editor: I would like to address some of the questions raised by Wendy Klein’s letter, [“An Important Question for Local Education,” April 2014] in East Side Monthly magazine. Lincoln School is an independent school located here on the East Side; this means that an independent Board of Trustees runs the school and that we are not governed by any other nonprofit corporation or religious group.

The school’s Quaker heritage means that our students learn through the lens of the Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equity/equality, stewardship of the earth and service. These values inform many of the projects we undertake throughout the year.

We as educators both believe in and support strong public schools, as do our parents through their real estate taxes. Lincoln partners with other independent schools and several public schools throughout the year. The RI Festival of Children’s Books and Authors, which Lincoln

hosts every October, is always a huge community draw, attracting more than 3,000 attendees. Our school always invites local schools and even provides them with free admission vouchers for teachers and students who might not otherwise be able to attend. The Shakespeare in the City program, begun by a Lincoln teacher, brings together students and faculty from over 20 different public and private schools throughout Providence.

David Brooks introduced the concept of segregation by zip code in an article in The Atlantic, “People Like Us” in 2003; he wrote, “We all pay lip service to the melting pot but we really prefer the congealing pot.” Whether it is 02906 or our nation’s capital, Americans, he says, go to great lengths to live in proximity to those most like themselves. And so, the many independent schools of Providence, including Lincoln, provide a different experience. Lincoln School is the only all girls school, the second oldest (founded in 1884), and we offer a Quaker foundation. Although

located in 02906, Lincoln School attracts students from 75 zip codes and from many diverse backgrounds.

While the rest of America lives in political, ideological, socioeconomic, racial, religious and ethnically centered zip codes, Lincoln School students move beyond this, embracing a greater diversity of experience, values and financial security. Over 40% of the student body receives financial aid and/or scholarships. Our students can choose to study Arabic, among other languages, and next year they will have the opportunity to spend time traveling and performing community service in and around Mumbai, India, led by our 16th Head of School, Suzanne Fogarty.

Our entire student body, parents and faculty are committed to the ideal of being a part of a strong and vibrant community, both within and beyond 02906, that offers opportunities for all. Thanks to Ms. Klein for opening this dialogue.

The Case for Mary Jane To the Editor: Emily Jones’ article [“High Times,” April 2014] in East Side Monthly outlined both sides of the marijuana debate.

This is the correct approach to such a polarizing issue. Critical thinking backed up by substantial data is what is so often lacking in this critical discussion.

As a recovering addict who is now Board Certified in Addiction Medicine I see how marijuana can be devastating to patients already suffering from another drug addiction. Nonetheless, I am not for outright prohibition of the drug when it comes to adults (i.e. over 24 years of age) who might be able to use the drug occasionally and casually.

Laws will be required to check underage use and what might constitute safe levels for driving – but I am not for blanket prohibition.

Medical marijuana also should be allowed but needs to be regulated so that only specific diagnoses will be treated.

Giving marijuana because a patient requests it led to massive chaos in California years ago and threatens to do so everywhere it is not controlled.

Going even this far will cause the enormous recreational marijuana lobby to coordinate multiple spurious accusations of what a luddite I must be to oppose free and unrestricted use. The attacks are frequent and often coordinated and only serve to give face to the empty headed position that such a powerful mind altering drug should be readily available to a population used to getting what it wants if it shouts and threatens long and hard enough.

Reasoned debate should be considered by all politicians who currently are being pushed to continuously make marijuana available to all who want it.

The Dearly Departed To the editor: Mickey Rooney was my all-time favorite Hollywood actor, and I’m so sorry to lose him! I nominated him to get an honorary RISD degree for

his contribution to the movie industry and very much wanted to invite him to visit my class on the history of the MGM studio and its glorious output.

He was one of the stars who never turned on Louis B. Mayer and instead spoke fondly of him at his memorial service and thanked him for his career.

That’s class! Mayer in turn claimed the single movie he was proudest of producing was a wartime “duration” drama starring Mickey as a telegram delivery-boy working for Frank Morgan, the Wizard of Oz star, playing a telegrapher/drunkard. Mickey sobers him up with coffee from a nearby pub and in tragic irony has to take home a message that his older brother has died on the battlefield. It’s a tearjerker but also deep, eloquent and stirring.

Mickey Rooney was a versatile performer. He could play comedy or tragedy and even Shakespeare, and never overshadowed his supporting cast. I followed his entire career, from the Andy Hardy series with Judy Garland to the musical biographies such as Words and Music in which he played the lyricist Lorenz Hart. Always, one way or another, he was playing himself, at once sad and chipper. The Disney museum denies that Mickey met Walt and was the model for Mickey Mouse, but it strikes me as poetically valid even if not literally true.

And then, in the postwar 1950s decade, he evolved into dramatic roles as desperate losers who never lost their wild hopes. Even television couldn’t dampen his spirits or suppress his creativity. He once played a Down’s Syndrome-afflicted solitary figure who finds a way to live alone but as an independent soul, intrepid and cheerful. He was cute in a naughty Pucklike way when he was a kid, but he was also deep and inspired in everything he did, said and represented.

Do those who have passed on and away from us have a chance to hear, to read, to know something of the respect and affection of their community of admirers? I hope so and that is why I am writing these words, to say farewell and wave enthusiastically for every glimpse I have ever had of this most remarkable personality.

The Giving Tree A loss for the John Brown House becomes a gain for the Rhode island Historical Society

By Julie Tremaine The John Brown House is an important part of Providence’s history. It’s the city’s first real mansion, built in 1788 by John Brown, the statesman, merchant (and, unfortunately, slave trader) who was an early benefactor of Brown University. You might note the similarity in those two names. Not a coincidence.

Anyway, the house is a big deal.

There’s a room inside painted in a panoramic scene of George Washington’s inauguration, which at the time it was painted, was a recent piece of history.

John Quincy Adams went so far as to say that the house was “the most magnificent and elegant private mansion that I have ever seen on this continent.”

Now, the house belongs to the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS), and is a museum of the Brown family and early American life in Providence. But, there’s been some trouble recently - the house has steadily been losing the iconic elm trees that line the lawn. One came down last year from an unidentifiable illness, and another is slated to come down this spring.

Ok, you might say, it’s just a tree.

They get cut down all the time. What’s the big deal?

“The elms provide such an ambience,” explains Kathy Klees Clarendon of RIHS. “We hold our Concerts Under the Elms in the summer there. It’s such a magical place in the city. The frontage on Benefit Street is a city block.

It’s an oasis in the city. It’s a place to breathe, to walk, to sit quietly and watch the sunset. The trees make it what it is.”

However, RIHS is turning the loss into an opportunity. When the first tree came down last year, they put out the call to woodworkers and furniture makers all over New England, inviting them to come make art out of the more-than-century-old tree. A furniture-making professor at RISD is currently curing planks that will be ready to build with in a couple of years. Six

woodworkers from Cape Cod Woodturners came to Providence to retrieve pieces of the tree, which are now being returned to RIHS to become parts of their permanent collection. The bowl and vase photographed above were made by Michael Grady of Forestdale, Massachusetts, and more are on their way. The Society is determining the best use of the pieces now, whether that’s keeping them in their permanent collection, or auctioning off some of them at a fundraising event. Because, take her word for it, replanting that lawn isn’t going to be cheap.

“What we want to do going forward is come up with a planting plan, and a plan that is staggered so we’re not doing the whole grove at once,” she explains. “We’d like to put in three or four trees this year, and more in a few years, so we’ll have a continual,

safe grove of trees. We’d also like to diversify a bit. We’ve met with Doug Still, the city forester of Providence, and he’s made some recommendations on some different species that we should consider.”

While they’re currently fundraising through private donors to help with the associated costs, RIHS needs the public’s help, too. Both donations, and adopting an individual tree, are options. At a time when there are so many good causes to give to, it might seem easy to overlook something like an elm tree in need. Those trees, though, and the house they surround, are an important part of who we are and where we’ve been. As RIHS Executive Director C. Morgan Grefe says, “when this elm was planted, our new State House was just being occupied by our state’s leaders – and Rhode

Island was the wealthiest state in the union… This tree stood tall as Rhode Islanders gave their lives in foreign wars, and somehow still taller as we welcomed countless thousands of people from dozens of nations to our shores. In 1938 this elm weathered the legendary hurricane and 40 years later it looked majestic swaddled in the snow that stopped Lil’ Rhody cold.

This very tree sheltered the many religious and ethnically diverse children who grew up on Benefit Street before it was known as “a Mile of History.”

With this year’s June 25 filing deadline approaching, emails and press announcements continue to arrive at our office from potential East Side candidates. In case you’re keeping score, here’s what we know so far. For mayor, the field is pretty well set. On the Democratic side there is businessman Lorne Adrain, Housing Court Judge Jorge Elorza, State House lobbyist Brett Smiley, City Council President Michael Solomon, and, most likely, perennial candidate Michael Young. On the Republican side there’s East Side psychiatrist Dan Harrop. And then of course there’s Buddy. Yes, we’ve heard the stories that he is running. But who knows for sure or even which party banner he’d choose. It certainly hasn’t

taken long for candidates to emerge for Gordon Fox’s soon to be vacated House seat in District 4. Three Democrats have already announced: Community activist Aaron Regunberg, Miriam Ross, an attorney who ran four years ago for Rhoda Perry’s Senate seat and Heather Tow-Yick, who heads the local Teach for America program.

On the State Senate side, former television reporter and now real estate agent Chris Wall has announced he will challenge incumbent Gayle Goldin. We haven’t heard of anyone taking on City Council incumbents Seth Yurdin, Sam Zurier or State Rep Chris Blazejewski yet. It promises to be a busy political season. Watch for that political sign coming to a lawn near you soon.

The Reel Deal at our Local Libraries When Acme Video closed its doors a few months ago, it sent shock waves to film lovers across the East Side. So it’s good news indeed to learn that their legendary collection of films, many of them hard-to-find vintage and international classics, will remain on the East Side for us to enjoy after all. Ed Graves, regional librarian for the Providence Community Library, reports that they have purchased about half of the inventory from owner Ralph Goudreau and hopes to successfully fundraise to secure the rest. The films will be available for library patrons beginning immediately. Sorry, popcorn is not included.

Hopefully Her Skill Set and Enthusiasm are Infectious Too Dr. Lynn Taylor, an infectious disease specialist at Miriam Hospital and an assistant professor of medicine at Brown, will be honored as this year’s Rhode Island Medical Women’s Association (RIMWA) Physician of the Year at a their annual meeting and dinner on Tuesday, May 13 at the Providence Marriott. A graduate of Harvard and later Brown Medical School, Dr. Taylor developed and now directs Miriam’s HIV/Viral Hepatitis Co-infection program. She was also one of the two recipients of the Rhode Island Foundation’s Innovation Fellowship last year, a grant awarded by philanthropists Letitia and John Carter that provides up to $300,000 over three years to develop, test and implement innovative ideas that have the potential to dramatically improve any area of life in RI. Her project, RI Defeats Hep C, aims to make us the first state to eradicate Hepatitis C. The event to honor this very impressive woman is open to both the medical and non-medical communities.

There Go the Neighborhoods But in this case that’s a good thing.

We’re always excited to support our local East Side shopping areas (it’s our job after all), but especially this month since two of them are holding their once-a-year neighborhood spring festivals. The first will be held on South Main Street on Saturday, May 17. The merchants there now call themselves the SoMa District (nice touch!) and this is their big seasonal event. The day will include pilates in the park, an obstacle course, food trucks, live music, shopping and family fun for everyone. The second event will be on Hope Street, which always knows how to throw a party. Theirs will be held on May 31 (rain date June 7) and includes sidewalk sales, live music, hayrides, street painting, tons of kids activities, Beers for the Ballet (a beer tent with all the state’s own breweries where half of all proceeds go directly to Festival Ballet Providence) and even our own John Taraborelli emceeing a not to be missed Hope Street Fashion Show. Sounds like May’s going to be jumpin’ here on the East Side.

It’s Graduation Season, Again After surviving the pothole attack of 2014, May at least gives us the opportunity to remember how beautiful the East Side can be. And it never looks better than during the Brown Memorial weekend graduation ceremonies.

The magnolias and rhododendrons usually burst into color as if on cue.

The main green shimmers with exotic overhead lanterns illuminating the all classes campus dance. Students frolic amidst thoughts of graduation and moving on to the real world. Their visiting parents frolic amidst thoughts that their financial bleeding is over. It’s also an ideal time for all of us East Side residents to visit the campus, attend some great free lectures on Saturday, rub shoulders with the rich and famous and basically get blown away by arguably one of the most picturesque college graduations anywhere in the country. It’s the East Side at its best and it should not be missed.

Pictures are not limited to set categories, can be color or black and white and there is no differentiation between adult or youth photographers. There is no minimum size but the maximum is 16x20 in. and all entries must be mounted on foamcore or mountboard.

There will be prizes (the exact nature and amounts are also still being decided) and displays of the entries

Community Projects in the Works At the first meeting of the 2014 board of directors, held on March 17, progress on various projects was cited, including: – Tot Lot renovation and community gardens groundbreaking is expected in the spring, but a supervisory group that includes area residents is still to be formed – Hope Street Spring Fair, scheduled for May 31, may include a martial-arts display as an SNA contribution – Music Festival grant application has been submitted to the city, with a tentative date in August – Fall yard sale was decided to have the same format as last year, with items being brought to the churchyard on Hope Street, and in possible cooperation of the area merchants association – Fall cook-off, with themed taste treat, to be decided.

Pitman Street A new four-story residential complex, The Premier, is going up on Pitman Street between Wayland Avenue and Eastside Marketplace. It’s another large, monotonous, building in red brick and white plaster replacing the two- and three-story clapboard houses that used to fill the non-industrial upper stretch of Pitman Street. (I still remember the open brook you could see from the sidewalk of the site ten or twelve years ago, some of which may be reopened when the new building’s landscaping is finished.).

Other neighboring examples of this trend are One Wayland (which always makes me first think of a sinister French gendarmerie) and the 100-odd condominium units built by the nowbankrupt Streuver Brothers.

While various social and economic forces are driving development along this congested street, the former Rosewood Nursing Home, across the street from The Premier and newly refashioned as apartments, suggests how one could build many units more compatibly with the neighborhood.

Why there hasn’t been more scrutiny of these new buildings is unclear to me.

The area tends to fall past the cracks between the Fox Point, Wayland Square and Blackstone neighborhoods, and some of the projects have few abutting property owners likely to object.

(The Streuver Brothers project was negotiated with the former Blackstone Park Improvement Association, rather than the former Wayland Square Residents’ Association, at the beginning of this century, but our current neighborhood discussion group was frankly unaware of the plans for The Premier.)

The area below (south of) Wayland Avenue also enjoys rather more liberal zoning than other parts of our neighborhood, and the big property owners do, of course, have both rights and obligations like taxes or maintenance.

and Wayland. If the rest of upper Brook Street is upzoned as planned, I see its future in Pitman Street’s present.

Blackstone Parks Conservancy Can It Happen Here?

The catastrophic mudslide in Washington State in March brought to mind the far smaller one that slumped into the Seekonk River behind Butler Hospital a few decades ago. The fanned out sand you can see in aerial photographs fortunately killed no one. The steady trickle of topsoil and sand down from the glacial outwash bluffs onto the River Road sidewalk is disquieting. Many widening gullies and heavily leaning trees with increasingly exposed roots suggest growing instability.

Rhode Island citizens have voted to support outdoor space that people can safely enjoy. When the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and Coastal Resource Management Council (CRMC) recently awarded grants to Blackstone Parks Conservancy to work with the Providence Parks Department to upgrade the eroding trails in the BPCD, they threw meaningful support to this rare urban woodland. Perhaps not a minute too soon.

BPC has long worked with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), the Parks Department and lately with Friends of Blackstone Woods to stem the loss of stabilizing plants and soil by hauling chips onto trails and installing waterbars to keep chips in place. Considerable effort by volunteers slowed the runoff somewhat – but not enough to get ahead of the storms. Now the DEM and CRMC grants and our volunteers can enable a foothold by upgrading more trails in the center section, with partial restoration of native vegetation beside the trails keeping them viable for a time.

When people walk and run outside the log trail edges, they extend the compaction problem, destroying the plants that help keep leaf litter and topsoil in place. If people want the park to be healthy and welcoming for years go come, more protection is needed.

Visitors need to stay on trails in order to protect the woodland floor. At the same time, the trails need to become more absorbent. That’s where more woodchips, water bars and brakes can make a difference.

Fences can seem alien in a beautiful semi-wild place like the Conservation District. But according to foresters, botanists, engineers, trail specialists and park managers who care about the Blackstone Park Conservation District, some temporary fencing is necessary.

The split rail fence built by AMC and BPC volunteers with DEM-funded materials a few years ago above the vulnerable east bluff in the central section seemed raw and out of place

at first. But with weathering it came to look as if it belonged. And the space between fence and bluff that had been trampled bare soon filled with grasses and wildflowers as well as tiny saplings.

The story of the eastern bluff shows what can happen when people give nature a chance to regenerate.

The trail project will inconvenience visitors to the park for a few weeks this spring. Some trails in the center section will be temporarily closed while contractors operate heavy machinery. Please support our vision: healthy urban green space for all.

Eight local leaders weigh in on what they think we should consider in the upcoming mayoral election

here certainly seems to be no shortage of candidates ready, willing and, hopefully, able to run for Angel Taveras’s soon to be vacated seat as mayor of Providence. Four Democrats, Lorne Adrain, Judge Jorge Elorza, Brett Smiley and City Council President Michael Solomon have declared and are all actively campaigning. Dan Harrop has already announced on the Republican side. And of course there’s Buddy, clearly enjoying keeping us all guessing on his plans.

So far, each of the candidates is shoring up support, not to mention trying to raise money, within their core constituencies. But with the September 9 primary election date drawing closer, it is clear the time is fast approaching for a full-scale assault on the entire city. The first full forums have been held by the Providence Public Library and most neighborhood associations are planning open meetings or public debates for the candidates as well.

But what should we be looking for as we meet them? We’ve asked seven local leaders representing the arts, business and social action communities, representing a broad range of the city’s neighborhoods, to weigh in on what they think the new mayor

needs to consider if he or she is to take on arguably one of the most difficult jobs in the state.

Here are their thoughts:

“Every time we get into the political season, it feels crazy. This year feels even more insane.

Basically, I wish people ran for mayor as a team, because ultimately I’m not looking for an individual. We put too much pressure on the mayor being one person, when we should examine who they surround themselves with. One of the questions I ask all candidates is, ‘Who are the top three people you turn to when you’re encountering adversity or need someone’s input?’ That is very telling.

There’s no limit to where creativity can take you, but for whatever reason, innovation is a more accepted term than creativity. At its root, though, innovation is driven by creativity. I would love to see a mayor encourage artists and creative thinkers to be engaged in all levels of the City government.

And we need a comprehensive vision, even if it’s all a

Providence needs a mayor who can deal strongly with the harsh financial realities that face the city. This means we need a confident and competent leader.

Providence has real potential, but it has put itself in a financial bind and recent incremental measures actually will stunt a Providence revival. Leadership means taking the problem of pensions and OPEB head on.

The next mayor must address taxes by implementing new taxes that will most likely hit the wealthy and property holders. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a wealth tax or wealth surcharge applied to homes and properties worth $1 million or more. Also a city tax for all rental residents. This should be combined with employee wage freezes, plus significant renegotiating of municipal, police and fire benefits, in addition

to cutting services and selling assets.

I want the next mayor to pledge that he will do whatever it takes to end the $2.5 to $3 billion in debt that hides off the balance sheet. This can only happen by reducing benefits, ending defined benefit plans and increasing taxes on the citizens who by their votes have allowed this crisis to develop.”

Hopefully, the next mayor will allocate more resources to the Providence Police Department. I realize that there are many competing needs for city funding, but the crime increases of the past few years will eventually erode the city’s tax base as many people in the higher tax rate areas (such as the East Side) leave the city for safer areas.

The current state of the city’s finances has been long in the making and is probably impossible to turn around quickly. But if the severity of the problem is laid out more openly and dealt with directly, true (vs. cosmetic) change can begin.

And of course, I want the next mayor to reduce crime and make it safer.”

Frank Shea, Executive Director of Olneyville Housing Corporation “Providence needs someone who views the city as a whole and who understands how healthy neighborhoods, healthy neighborhood busi-

ness districts like Olneyville Square, Broad Street and Hope Street, and a healthy downtown are not exclusive of one another. They are all necessary if we are to have a healthy Providence.

These neighborhood centers create a walkable and livable community and are a hub for neighborhood vitality.

And with this, we need a mayor who understands small business and works to create an infrastructure that supports the small and local entrepreneurial businesses that make up these hubs.

If you own or want to start a business in Providence, the city needs to make it very easy to maneuver through regulatory or assistance programs. That is what is needed to stabilize our tax base and provide opportunities and a path forward for everyone in the city.”

Cliff Wood, Executive Director of Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy “Providence needs a mayor that understands how to build partnerships with the community, with businesses, with the state, with other cities and towns, etcetera, to create new models for providing city services. The world is changing and many of the older ways of providing services do not work anymore.

For the I-195 development, the mayor needs to know that the land won’t necessarily be developed overnight.

In order for the best developments to be attracted to Providence, we need a system that makes development predictable and easily understood.

The mayor also needs to identify the issues that will make Providence competitive with other cities, bigger and smaller, over the next several decades. What are the things that attract business? What are the things that attract and retain young people? What are the things that retain families in the city? It’s functioning schools, pub-

positive impact on our city.

Another major goal for the new mayor should be to better fund and support empowerment and development opportunities for Providence youth. By engaging our young people with positive ways to express themselves, you can mitigate against their becoming involved in less productive and potentially criminal behavior that will costs us all more in the long run.

And finally, specifically here in Mt. Hope, I’d like to see the new mayor support the grass roots community work going on in our neighborhood.

Because we’re located on the East Side, it’s assumed our community receives all the support and resources we need. And while there are wonderful things happening at the Billy Taylor House, the Camp Street Community Ministries, the Everett Theatre and the Mount Hope Learning Center, there’s also so much more to be done. Hopefully the new mayor will help us continue our progress.”

Kari Lang, Executive Director, West Broadway Neighborhood Association “Here are some values that would be nice for Providence neighborhoods to see in the next mayor. First is the prioritization of preserving and enhancing our historic urban city. This would specifically entail things like demanding best practices in historic preservation and urban planning, incorporating green initiatives where possible and no more demolition. Secondly we’d like to see better maintenance

of existing city property. Thirdly, how about if the new mayor could commit to better enforcement of city laws in all departments which, by the way, would bring in more revenue for the City. Next it’d be nice to see support of economic development to help local businesses create thriving ‘Main Streets’ in every neighborhood. And finally, most obviously, strong local schools in every community.

One initiative we’re currently advocating is for the City to allow neighborhood organizations full legal status at zoning hearings so as to express community values, which would replace current rules that limit such status to only property owners within 200 feet of a proposed zoning change.”

Final Word Please note, these answers have been cut and condensed from their original forms. (Some ran for pages.) Although each interviewee focused on a different sector of Providence, certain trends could be seen running throughout all of their answers. For example, in the original text, the following words appeared most frequently: • “Art” appeared 21 times • “Vision,” 18 times • “Bus,” 17 times • “Business,” 15 times • “Tax,” 12 times Way down at the bottom of this list were such words as “hope” and “quickly” and “celebration,” each mentioned only twice. Clearly, Providence’s leaders know what they want, but they have little expectation of achieving it quickly. But, as our state flag notes, there’s always hope in Rhode Island.

Several years ago, one of my sons went nearly an entire Little League season without a hit. He stepped up to the plate again and again, and nothing. He could draw a walk like nobody’s business, but he was incredibly reluctant to swing and miss. It became painful to watch, not only for me but also for most of the parents, coaches and other players. But as the season progressed, he dug in and started to swing. He went from the king of walks to the king of strikeouts, pop-ups and ground-outs. Somehow, through all of the mistakes and missed swings, he just kept at it. Finally, at his last at-bat during the last game of the season, he got on base, and the crowd went wild. It was just a single, but oh, what a single.

I think back on that difficult season as a gift, because it taught him the value of passionate persistence - what’s now being called grit in the education field. Our instincts and experience generally tell us that dedication and persistence really do pay off, and that notion has gained a strong basis in research and an increasingly prominent place in conversations about education.

Indeed, grit isn’t just an important quality for lifelong success – it may be among the most important. University of Pennsylvania researcher Angela Duckworth defines grit as the disposition to pursue long-term goals with passion and perseverance. Duckworth’s research shows that grit is a reliable predictor of success in and beyond school, and her work – for which she received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 2013 – focuses on the ways such perseverance can be measured and encouraged.

The key to encouraging a “gritty” approach to life’s challenges is to adopt what another researcher, Stanford University’s Carol Dweck, calls a growth mindset. A growth mindset, as Dweck writes in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, “is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way - in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests or

temperaments – everyone can change and grow through application and experience.“ The effect of adopting a growth mindset allows us to view a failure as something we cannot do yet, rather than something we cannot do at all, as it would be if we believed our abilities were fixed.

In schools, the presence of a growth mindset among students has been demonstrated to boost overall motivation and achievement, narrow racerelated achievement gaps and narrow the gender gap in math. Moreover, in schools, a growth mindset can be taught. Some schools (though none of which I am aware of in Providence) have programs developed by Dweck and others that foster understanding of how learning works and how measures of intelligence and achievement can be improved. Even pursued informally, understanding how we learn as a way to improve learning itself can have powerful effects. I encourage you to read Mindset for much more on this topic.

At home, there’s a great deal more that we can do to foster grit and a growth mindset. We can, and should,

nudge kids to take on challenging experiences, and to be present as they make mistakes and have a hard time.

As hard as it can be, try to welcome frustration, and model what it looks like to persevere through it. This may mean talking about your own failures and challenges in your life. Above all, let go of the idea that kids are supposed to be great at most of what comes their way. Mastery – whether it’s of cursive, or riding a bike, or geometry, or getting that bat on the ball - really does require varying degrees of time and effort. Mistakes and missteps are reasons to keep going, not reasons to quit.

To get started, here’s some wisdom from author Neil Gaiman: “If you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” Rather than viewing “mistakes” as not to be avoided but as meaningful measures of progress, learning and growth can have powerful results for your kids – and yourself – in school, work and life.

Smart News In a collaborative effort to design and implement curricula that integrate science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM), the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island (JCDSRI) faculty has partnered with the Brown/RISD STEAM group, a student collaborative focused on the importance of interdisciplinary studies. In a recent cross-disciplinary unit, Brown/RISD STEAM students worked with JCDSRI fifth graders on an integrative study of the moon focusing on the relationship between the moon’s gravity and mass. Students also created clay models of the moon and earth based on mass to demonstrate a mathematical understanding of scale. This complemented students’ study of the moon in English Language Arts and Social Studies with their general studies teacher and the Jewish lunar calendar with their Judaic studies teacher. The collaboration that this project represents is remarkable: three schools, five areas of study and more.

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to step out to your curb. Go on, it’s safe. No plow trucks zooming by, no cars kicking up rock salt. Chances are you’ll find a patch of crabgrass and a cement edge that probably survived our bitterly cold and offensively long winter.

Gaze upon that edge. It’s a lonely stretch of cement that needs something to place you in the universe. You could scrawl out a peace sign or the abbreviation for Finland (fi!), or you could set down your home address, in which case you need to reach out to the CEO of Clear Curbs. His name is Peder; tell him his mother says hello.

Here’s how it works: You call Peder’s – uh, my son’s – secretary and ask her to make an appointment to get your curb dolled up. He comes over with paint, a brush, stencils and his security detail. He thoroughly cleans the curb, then works his magic. The UPS truck will never get lost again.

Enough said about that. On to the particulars of a very cool idea from a kid with big dreams, and surely you can’t fault him for that.

Not long ago, Peder was sitting around our family homestead kneading bread and said he wanted

to start a business. I thought that was a swell idea. I envisioned a landscape service but he wanted a project that required some thought, maybe even a “business plan.’’

“Let’s not get too complicated,’’ I said.

“I like complicated,’’ he replied. “Complicated is good.’’

The next thing you know a flier was sitting on the kitchen table: “Clear Curbs delivers reliable and useful curb number painting to the East Side. We provide a clear address so friends, emergency personnel and delivery people can quickly and easily find your home.’’

When I was a kid, a century or so ago, life was simpler. I made money babysitting and working as a soda jerk at Velvet Freeze, the neighborhood ice cream shop. I was 13, clearly underage, but back then everyone ignored child labor laws, especially Mr. Martin, the gruff owner who barked out my last name, “Rau,’’ when he put in an order for “scoop of peppermint – now!’’ I socked my earnings away in the bank and used the cash to buy peasant shirts and burgundy clogs.

Today kids are more entrepreneurial, mimicking what they see and hear in the media and on the street. Those heady TEDx conferences come to mind with the message that you can move mountains if you come up with a good idea and some capital from your great aunt in Buffalo. And let’s not forget the value of hard work.

The lousy economy weighs heavily on kids too. Think about it. They were running around in diapers when we lived in a bubble and renovated our kitchens every five seconds and now they see headlines about a sputtering economy that might never rebound. They have to rethink the world as we know it.

Kids all over the East Side are launching start-ups. The products and services are impressive: duct tape wallets, string bracelets, tailoring, errand boy, greeting cards, cookies, homemade bread, rice crispy treats, and, of course, old reliable – the lemonade stand. (The next time you stroll past one in the hood, drop a dime for a kid and cause.)

Customer service is the key to success in any business, and such is the case with Curb Cuts. A taste of the Mediterranean in wayland Square

By Grace Lentini Owner and Executive Chef Ghassan Daou opened L’artisan Café & Bakery in August 2010 and it’s still going strong.

Born in Lebanon, raised in Worcester, MA and having gone to Assumption College, he originally had no intention of being in the food industry. As luck would have it though, after graduation he began acquiring small bistros and cafés in Montreal with his brother. Feeling the need to return south of the border, he started scoping out areas to open his own restaurant. The result, a Mediterranean-inspired café with some European flavor here in Wayland Square.

How has your Lebanese background influenced your cuisine?

We try to make everything with fresh herbs and fresh flavors. So lots of olive oil, fresh lemon, mint, basil, dill. I bring all of these things together and keep the food as simple, as basic and as natural as possible.

Most of the items on the menu are my ideas and creations. It’s all cultivated from my 20-something years in the field. Also, my wife happens to be a great cook and has a lot of influence on things. And she always has ideas.

We try to be creative and come up with new things every season.

So you do have a seasonal menu.

We have a seasonal menu for mainly the spring, summer and fall. This is to support our outdoor seating. We like to have items that we can offer for a week or two and move on to something else.

We also make a lot of things in-house: salads, prepared foods, a large variety of sandwiches (panini and wraps). We do our own baking in the morning and then there’s all the coffee.

Tell me about some menu items that are inspired from your travels.

There’s definitely food inspired from my Lebanese background. We make our

own tabouli, hummus, baba ghanoush, a few different salads like the lima bean salad, which is my mother’s recipe, falafel and wraps. In the summer we have a cold soup that is made with yogurt, cucumber and mint, which is very refreshing. Having lived in Montreal and being exposed to different foods, especially some French influence, the croissants, Danishes and breakfast items come from that exposure.

Did you say yogurt cucumber mint soup?

Yes! It’s a strained yogurt called labne.

With that we mix some diced cucumbers, extra virgin olive oil, some fresh mint and a bit of garlic. Mixing the olive oil with yogurt and bringing all these flavors together is just such a great way to cool down in the summer.

If you had to choose a favorite dish you make, what would it be?

I personally love salads and vegetables, so tabouli would be my favorite dish. And the best time for me to eat it is at breakfast. For some reason it’s refreshing and healthy. I have it by itself. To appreciate a good tabouli, it is best to have it as a salad by itself.

What’s makes up a good tabouli?

I think choosing simple, fresh ingredients like fresh parsley, fresh vine tomatoes, good extra virgin olive oil and lemon that are then well-seasoned with fresh onion and cracked bulgur wheat. We do use a bit of onion, but we keep it to a minimum to not overpower the taste. The best way to have tabouli is to mix it right before serving.

The bread on your panini looks so good. I just want to rip off a hunk and dunk it in something.

We bake the bread in-house. In fact, the bread comes all the way from a bakery in Montreal through a distributor in Boston. The bread is very special. It is baked in a wood-fired oven at a very high temperature. It has exceptional texture.

Describe your panini and wraps.

Some panini have French-influence, like the black forest ham with French brie. We also have a grilled vegetable panini with a bit of pesto, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Then there’s the fresh turkey on cranberry bread, one of our top sellers. The wraps tend to have more Mediterranean influence.

We have one called the Mediterraneo, which is essentially a Greek salad in a wrap. It has nice feta cheese, fresh tomatoes, a bit of red onion, lettuce, a couple of drops of olive oil and fresh oregano. It makes a wonderful sandwich. Very simple, very healthy.

Why did you choose to offer prepared foods?

I think because of the size of the space.

We are limited to about 30 seats inside.

Also to facilitate a lot of people who come in in the morning. They can grab something quick to have for lunch. Or, for those coming after work, they can grab something and have a healthy meal, even

though it is prepackaged. Or you can eat it here on site. It just gives more flexibility having such a set up. You eat with your eyes. That’s why everything is on display.

You can choose from what you see versus what’s on a menu. It’s another thing that is European-influenced. You’ll see this setup in many European cities.

What’s next?

We are thinking of opening another location, either here or in Massachusetts. We are looking for another prime location. We are in touch with a few people in Boston and will be having serious discussions on opening a second location.

Beer, Burgers, Bon Appetit Downtown’s new, delicious gastropub

By Elyena de Goguel Over on Orange street, in an architectural beast that used to be separate buildings - the Providence Gas Building, National Grid addition and the Narragansett Hotel Garage - lives the city’s newest luxury apartment complex known as the Providence G. The residences are already about a year old, but the building’s basement has just recently transformed into a gastropub paradise.

The GPub is one of Providence’s few – if only – gastro pubs. General Manager Brendan Moran explains how the theme is simply a way of filling a gap in Providence’s restaurant scene.

“The city was in need of a pub-style restaurant offering upscale, really good quality food,” says Brendan. “We wanted to provide Providence with something it needed… plus the large space worked perfectly for the idea.”

The interior is impressive and reminiscent of an old factory or historical subway station. As you enter the building and descend into its depths, you are greeted with a vast, open floor plan, slightly dim – but not overly dark – lighting and a range of seating options. A massive bar adorns the far wall, while communal wooden tables, smaller two tops and booths occupy the rest of the room. Subtly placed TVs make it easy to watch “the game” without being obnoxious, and pool tables and karaoke booths make it a perfect spot for group shenanigans.

And then, of course, there’s the meat. And the cheese. And the beer.

The holy trifecta of any legit gastro pub. The spacious bar offers over 50 brews – many of them craft – and Executive Chef Aaron Thorpe and his staff make almost everything on the menu in-house, from scratch: burgers, potato chips, fries, hot dogs, truffle cheese, even the ketchup is homemade.

The GPub will be one of three restaurants housed in the Providence G. In midsummer, PVD gains something it sorely needs in the form of a rooftop restaurant specializing in tapasstyle Mediterranean dishes, and later this year, an upscale seafood spot will likely be installed. 61 Orange Street, Providence. 632-4782. www.facebook. com/pages/G-Pub.

New Asian Cuisine on Benefit Street The East Side’s newest eatery features Japanese and Korean comfort food in a casual, cafe setting. DenDen Café Asiana – DenDen means “rice field, rice field” in Japanese – has taken over the space next to Geoff’s Superlative Sandwich shop on Benefit Street.

Sip on Illy coffee while feasting on creations like Yaki Udon Bento (stir fried noodles and vegetables on top of homemade bento), Kimchi Pancake (Korean pancake) or their signature dish, Hot Pot Beef Bulgogi (soy-marinated Korean thin-sliced beef with sweet potato noodles and vegetables served in a hot pot).

The story behind Venture Window starts back at URI in the late ‘70s, where college roommates Bruce Shulbaum and John W. Mills III developed a strong friendship. After graduating and heading into different career paths, they decided in 1986 to go into business together and founded Venture Window. What started out as a home remodeling businesses was streamlined in 1990 into specializing in windows. The company has continuously grown, and in 2005 moved into its current location on North Main Street. Beyond windows, Venture also does roofing, doors and vinyl siding. They have a large showroom space with the full range of models on display, from simple windows for investment properties to custom wood windows to match the style of Providence’s historic homes.

If you can’t stand the heat… you’re not Executive Chef Gary Comella

Two decades is a

lifetime for a chef to work in any single commercial kitchen. Yet Gary Comella, 61, has been the executive chef at The University Club on Benefit Street since 1994. The Providence native – a summa cum laude graduate in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales before working in upscale hotel restaurants in Boston, Dallas, Hawaii and Los Angeles – once believed he would never return home.

Why did you return to Providence?

“I was working very long hours as a chef in Los Angeles when my wife Elyse, an East Side native, became pregnant. I sensed we needed family nearby.”

Why such a long tenure with one venue?

“Initially, I thought I’d open my own restaurant, but the people who hired me compensated me pretty well,” explains Gary, now the father of two teenagers. “This was a good way to stay responsible… with a family.”

Favorite Providence restaurants?

Gary and his wife like Red Stripe, which is near their home. In venturing off the East Side, Gary loves Al Forno, Bacaro and Gracie’s, adding, “I hold these chefs in high regard. Birch is another place I want to check out.”

Do you focus on shopping local?

“I think I was among the first to shop at Four Town Farm [in Seekonk, MA]. I’ve remained true to them, although I also visit other farms,” says Gary, who chooses the best products available within his budget, regardless of where they come from. For obscure or exotic foodstuffs, he recommends Sid Wainer’s in New Bedford, MA, and Amazon.

Your preference: Savory or sweet?

“Savory, for sure. I am not a dessert eater.”

Your last meal?

Gary doesn’t hesitate: “The best burger that could ever be made. The completeness of a perfectly done burger satisfies me in so many ways. I don’t eat them anymore because they’re a

vice [for me], but if I overate, I’d overeat burgers.”

Any regrets?

Although he wonders if he would have made it on his own as a restaurateur, he has no regrets, as “the club has taken good care of me and continues to do so.”

With a “do-over,” he would have done things differently, he says, such as working for a top chef at a restaurant not affiliated with a hotel. “It’s not always about money,” Gary says, “but about learning and honing the craft.”
