Light Up The Night Rare neon sign in Bristol shines once again after 51 years In mid-May, the historic neon sign over Hotpoint Emporium (HPE) flickered to life for the first time in 51 years. It was a triumphant moment for the artist co-op, which had spent the better half of the previous three months working to restore the landmark on State Street. Member artist Kol Naylor had suggested HPE raise funds to restore the defunct sign. What followed is what founding director Ellen Blomgren describes as “the overwhelming support of the community through donations and cheerleading.” Between a GoFundMe page and generous landlord – who agreed to pay 50 percent of the total costs of the sign’s removal, restoration, and re-installation – the project quickly took off. “After calling and investigating many sign companies throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, we finally found Ray at Dion Signs,” says Kol, who spearheaded the effort. Ray and his two brothers own and operate their grandfather’s company, which specializes in everything

from designing and engineering to installing and maintaining signs. And this wasn’t just any sign. Hotpoint Appliances had made many neon signs, but State Street’s stood out with its vertical orientation and deco-style ornamentation. According to member artist Jen Charleson, who researched it extensively, only three such remain today: one in Great Barrington, Massachusetts; one in Titusville, Florida; and the one in Bristol. “The other two signs had already been restored,” says Jen, “so we are very proud to have been part of the restoration of the third, and quite possibly the last, remaining sign of this style.” But for HPE, the journey resulted in much more than the re-lighting of a decades-dark sign. Says Ellen, “The entire endeavor made us feel permanently connected to the culture and history of Bristol.” HotpointEmporium.com -Megan Schmit

Little artists collaborate on projects like this cardboard wall, covered in everything from tinfoil fish to crumpled paper waves

Mini Makers A new art studio is drawing attention downtown Warren, and its artists are hungry to show us what they’ve got – that is, after nap time. Makers LLC gives young artists (“walkers to fifth grade”) the opportunity to explore their creativity in a guided free-for-all environment without having to worry about the mess. Erin DeThomas, founder and CEO of Makers LLC, first brainstormed the idea when she was conducting art classes with her own kids in their backyard. With her masters in education and teaching background, Erin decided to bring her love of “process art” to other young, creative minds of the East Bay. “I’ve always encouraged messy play,” Erin says while explaining her theory on “process art.” The classes and camps she instructs here at Makers LLC are founded on this idea: “Not caring so much about the outcome, but the

12

creative process of how you got there.” Whether your youngster is already an artist or is just beginning at home, Makers LLC offers tons of different classes for creators of all ages: Fairy House Workshops, Dragon Painting, and over the summer, Dollhouse Camp, where students can design their own two-story wooden dollhouse (or pet-house, or superhero hideout house!). You can’t miss Makers LLC’s bright and colorful studio as you’re walking downtown Warren’s strip. Monsters, unicorns, and splatters of all shapes and sizes practically pull you in. The classes and camps at Makers LLC survey different art activities with not-so-average mediums. Sure, there’s paintbrushes, right alongside gooey squishable-balls, wooden structures, and of course, all the slime a kid could hope for. Erin introduces

children to these not-widely-used art materials and tools to encourage students to try new methods with their art-making. Whether they are working independently or together on a collaborative project, students are encouraged to travel wherever their imagination might take them. “The students learn so much by watching how someone else is painting and working together,” Erin explains about the collaborative aspects of her classes. “It’s definitely a confidence boost for the kid that’s teaching their peers, too.” With no idea too wild, too messy, or too “out-there,” Makers LLC offers inventive experiences that wouldn’t be found in the average classroom. Celebrate Summer at Passion Projects How a Riverside-based video marketing company expanded to film festivals around the continent Behind-the-scenes with Animus Studios

Fine Gifts, Décor and Women's & Children's Wear

From USA, Europe & Scandinavia

What happens when you unite a handful of out-of-the-box thinkers who share a common goal of creating, inspiring, and impacting humanity for the greater good (while making a living, of course)? You get Animus Studios. Eight years ago, co-founders Justin Andrews and Arty Goldstein were working together at other media agencies but knew they could channel their talents into something greater. “We wanted to launch something that was more true to our personalities,” says Justin. “We stepped out on a limb with no clients, but knew that our enthusiasm, passion, and focus would be a strong foundation.” Today, this merry duo has expanded to a band of content creators who work with a spectrum of clients to construct their narrative via documentary, animation, motion graphics, and scripted live action video. But the company’s passion morphed from focusing on profit to people, the majority of whom are right here in our backyard. “It boils down to telling great stories,” says Justin. Client work, he says, “pays the bills” while also being “really fun,” but the smallyet-mighty company decided they wanted to produce more original work. The Animus team supported Senior Editor Roy Power, a movie buff since childhood, when he set out to direct a short documentary entitled Memory Video, the story of an optimistic video-store owner in Philadelphia striving to keep the brick-and-mortar tradition alive amidst the rising popularity of

streaming. “It’s a ten-minute doc and it got into Hot Docs in Toronto,” says Justin. “A bunch of us flew up to see it. It’s basically THE festival for documentaries.” Officially called the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, it is the largest documentary festival in North America. Memory Video also got into the Montclair Film Festival (New Jersey), Nantucket Film Festival, Philadelphia Independent Film Festival, and the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Then, Animus editor and filmmaker Murphy McCann approached Justin one day and said she wanted to take on a project beyond her editor duties. “She wanted to do something from her perspective – a story about what it’s like to flirt if you’re a lesbian not knowing if the person you’re flirting with is a lesbian … I, personally, was really proud she did,” says Justin. The scripted short, Burning My Tongue, written and directed by Murphy, had its world premiere at the Provincetown International Film Festival in June. “It’s pretty cool, and good to get that affirmation – to get a third party to recognize your work,” says Murphy, who said it took about a year-and-a-half from when the film was conceptualized to when it was ready to hit the big screen. As Animus Studios expands their reach, so does their ability to push the envelope and tell the stories of even more compelling people and plots. Riverside, AnimusStudios.com -Andrea E. McHugh

metal bangles and other wire-weave chainmaille jewelry (or “chainmail,” jewelry made with connected metal rings, like armor). When it became clear her work was more than just a hobby, Krystal started showing and selling her work at area craft shows. “I did about 100 shows last year,” she says, “and then I found out this space was opening.” The space was one of a handful at the Mill Pond Shops, a collective of artist galleries, retail shops, and offices located in historic Tiverton Four Corners. Created Purpose officially opened its doors this past Mother’s Day weekend – an appropriate time as Krystal said her mom Kym did crafts with her and her brother throughout their childhood. When it came to stocking the shelves, Krystal knew exactly the company she wanted her own handiwork to keep. While working the craft market circuit, she founded a community of fellow-makers she dubbed “The Marketeers.” Together, they support one another at shows, cross-promote each other’s work, and collaborate. Today, Created Purpose carries the work of more than 50 artisans in a spectrum of mediums ranging from photography, stationery, cards, watercolor, pottery, glassware, and books to candles, selfcare, and pet-care products. Krystal is also dedicated to sharing craft-making with the community, so Created Purpose has a classroom where workshops include watercolor, chainmaille keychain making, container plants, reverse glass painting, canvas sign making, wine glass painting, decoupage, and even beekeeping – plus classes for children, tweens, and teens. Created Purpose is open Thursday from 12-7pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-5pm, and Sundays from 12-5pm. Since 1987, the Bristol Fourth of July Committee has presented The Hattie Brown Award to a worthy Bristolian who demonstrates the same dedication to community service as that of the late Hattie Brown. This year’s recipients Brett and Jennifer Mancieri are now not only part of history, but have made history for being the first couple chosen for the honor. If there is a need in the community, they are often first on the scene as a volunteer EMT (Jen) or volunteer firefighter (Brett), or with numerous organizations, including two of which were founded by Jen: Community Aid Fund and Fire Trailer and the

Kick Off to Christmas Community Aid Drive. Brett, who has invested hours building the Orange Crate Derby ramp and parade float, was recognized for his heroism by the American Legion and Town of Bristol when he jumped into Mt. Hope Bay in 2001 to rescue a man trapped in his car. The lifelong Bristol residents are parents to two sons, and Jen is a dental assistant at Harborside Family Dental while Brett is chief mechanic for Bristol DPW and owner/operator of BAM Powder Coating company. To learn more about helping families in need, Jen can be contacted at BristolFireRelief@gmail.com.

Jen: My grandmother [Mary Carinha passed away in December at 104] was the neighborhood go-to – she helped everyone, from making food or checking on someone if they were sick. My mom has always been involved with helping, too. I think you volunteer if you grow up with it. At 13, I started volunteering with the children’s summer library program.

Brett: It was the guys at the Hydraulion [Engine & Hose Company] who inspired me to get involved. They really took me under their wing. We have so many families in the Fire Department, which really helps get the next generation involved.

Jen: To see a family lose everything is heartbreaking, but to give them some glimmer of home is an amazing experience. In ten years, they may not remember my name or [that of] the other Ladies Auxiliary members, but they will remember someone was there for them.

Brett: July 4th will be the first time I will be attending the parade since I started working for the DPW 23 years ago. I usually drop Jen downtown, come home, watch it on TV, and then get some sleep before going to work for the night.

Jen: When we got the call [from Chair Judy Squires] we were like, ‘What?’ We have known multiple people on that list [of past recipients] and have looked up to those people. We are so humbled to have been selected.

While not every resident outfits their home with anchor motifs and dried sea stars, there’s an undeniable shoreline vibe in the air. Red Rocks

Little more than a year ago, the retro-fabulous cherry-red kitchen of longtime couple Gail Greenwood and Chil Mott appeared in The New York Times. Not in the “Home & Garden” section but “Music”, as Gail is bassist for the alternative rock band Belly. While a sunny space by the fridge may not be an ordinary backdrop for a band’s photo shoot, this is no ordinary kitchen (or band). With its 1930s wallpaper and chrome legged kitchen set, gathering around the table made much more sense then posing members against some dusky backdrop, looking sullen. Plus, the band practices regularly in the basement. Gail and Chil have made the quaint

By limiting the colorway to red and white, items from various eras play nicely together Middletown cottage their home since the 1990s. They first relocated from Providence as renters to be close to the beach for surfing (less than four miles away). Once the pair took ownership of the 1938 home, like many, a drive to make their imprint really took hold. Both artists

The Middletown home of Belly’s Gail Greenwood is authentically extraordinary

GET RHODY STYLE Gail and Chil have made Middletown their home-base for more than 20 years. They are proponents of shopping small, being resourceful, and are known around town as anti-urban sprawl activists. Here’s where the couple sources everything from home decor to guitars. and graphic designers who run Greenwood Associates from the attic, the pair found themselves drawn to authentic vintage style for the main level. What may have started as practical, accepting castoffs from family and friends, even a piece of taxidermy, developed into a penchant for heirloom quality and period design with an execution so precise it caught the eye of location scouts for Wes Anderson’s film Moonrise Kingdom. Being the third owners of the house, many original features are still in-tact and coveted by Gail and Chil. Things like mounted light fixtures, a cast iron double sink, and solid wood cupboards – which the couple simply painted and then replaced the hardware to give a re-fresh. Even what is new to the home isn’t so new, like the antique rose patterned wallpaper purchased at Secondhand Rose in New York City, or the 1940s Universal stove from Earthen Vessel in Providence.

When asked to define their decorating style, there’s a bit of an edge. After all, these two pride themselves on being “punk rock,” and rightfully so. “We call [our decor style] ‘Dead Grandmother’,” says Gail, who escorts you through the curated meticulous wonderland with chipped black nail-polished hands. Throughout the home, touches like floral prints and lace are always tempered with something unexpected, resulting in looks that are more interesting than sweet. Case in point, beyond the quintessential New England stone wall, approach the charming cottage to find a little skull affixed just below a light fixture; illuminated at night, it lets you know this is no ordinary house.

Want your home featured in The Bay magazine? Email Elyse@ProvidenceOnline.com to learn more

CURB APPEAL When asked to name her favorite local spot for home goods, Gail quickly offers, “Dumpsters. Seriously.” IN TUNE When you’re in more than one band (Belly, Benny Sizzler, and Band of Their Own, at last count), you need a good music shop and Middletown’ Mama’s Boy Music fits the bill. The store has instruments, does repairs, offers lessons, and more. SHOP MIDDLETOWN When she’s not eating candy, Gail shops at The Green Grocer. Other nearby go-tos include The Fabric Connection and Island Books.

Conveniently Located In The Heart Of Barrington

423 HOPE STREET, BRISTOL | 401.396.9849 I’m an old soul through and through, and that definitely shows in my overall style choices. It’s also a big driver in the way I approach my styling work. I lean towards the more classic, effortless pieces instead of something that might be ‘in’ at the moment. I love pieces that stand the test of time. I always come back to striped shirts, classic button-downs, and flowy dresses. Whenever I purchase a piece of clothing, I think about how it will make me feel first and foremost – both literally and figuratively. I love a great fabric and think it’s important for clothes to make you feel good on the inside, too. I find it fascinating what a great outfit can do to your confidence. You can always find me in a pair of good statement earrings. They spruce up my favorite classic pieces and make them feel brand new. And I must admit, I’m somewhat of a sunglass junky, mostly with a new little one because I hate wearing makeup and sunglasses are an instant eye lift. I grew up in Tennessee, and my parents are originally from New England, so we spent most of our summers traveling up this way to enjoy the area’s magical summers. This area always felt special to me as a child and was a home away from home. When I graduated from college, I knew I belonged in this beautiful part of the country. I spent a summer on the beaches of Rhode Island while interviewing for jobs in Boston and New York City, and ended up meeting my now-husband. I get a lot of inspiration just from looking around at our little corner of the world. But when I really need a boost, travel is always the answer. I love getting out of my comfort zone. It allows me to really be present.

That Clean Skin Life Pure Haven, a new toxin-free skincare line made in Rhode Island, has nothing to hide

I was shopping not too long ago, at that place with the big red bullseye logo, and I needed body wash. There was a line I hadn’t seen before. It was inexpensive, and smelled great. I bought it. And I liked it. But every time I used it, all I could think about was the chemicals inside. Mistrust of my beauty products is a feeling I can’t shake these days. If I’m willing to spend my Saturday morning at the farmer’s market to get the healthiest possible food, then why am I still willing to buy $2 body wash that was most certainly made with toxic compounds? The thing is, there’s a lot of fake “clean” beauty out there – a lot of it available at that big box store I mentioned – that looks like it’s natural, and is still made with pesticides and known carcinogens. The other thing that makes cleaning up your beauty routine hard is that a lot of lines that really are natural aren’t so effective. That’s why I wanted to try Pure Haven. It’s a relatively new company that makes toxin-free products available online or via home party. They make everything from laundry detergent to household cleaners, but I was most interested in their beauty and body products – so I undertook a month-long trial period to see if coming clean made any difference in how my skin looked and felt. The short answer is: yes. I used Pure Haven’s entire regimen, from a face wash made with rose, pomegranate, and cucumber, to deodorant made with peppermint, coconut, and tea tree. There were some things I didn’t love – you’re never going to convince me I need to use toner, and it was tough getting used to the toothpaste, which tasted great (a combination of cinnamon, clove, and mint) but didn’t foam the way I want toothpaste to foam. But there was an incredible combination of moisturizers for morning and night that have made me a convert. In the morning, I used Pure Haven’s game-changing Hyaluronic Acid (a serum derived from Vitamin C), followed by Refresh Eye Cream, made with aloe and essential flower oils, and Refresh Moisturizer, with green tea. At

night, I used Refresh Night Serum, a super-hydrating overnight product made with pink grapefruit and carrot oil. That was my favorite: I woke up looking like I had already cleansed and moisturized for the day. When you’re taking the time to be good to your skin, you’re going to look better regardless of what you’re putting on it. But I really did see a remarkable boost to my skin’s glow, and a significant reduction in breakouts. As often happens, making one positive choice led to other positive choices. Once I was into the groove of using clean beauty products, I started paying attention to my water intake and making sure to eat a colorful array of vegetables. My “clean beauty” glow came from the inside as well as the outside, and it feels so good that I’m definitely going to keep going with it.

HOW DOES THE SMOOTH SKIN SYSTEM WORK? A Smooth Skin System treatment involves combining several "age reversal" technologies. • Waves of energy produced by the system gently vibrate and heat the tissue, reorganizing the skin's scaffolding and stimulating new collagen production. The effect tightens and rejuvenates the skin in the targeted area. • Frequency-Specific Microcurrents are simultaneously transferred through the skin layers, improving muscle tone.

Restaurant Guide Bacon Cheddar Wurst

Over-the-Top Dog Gastros 401’s sausages and charcuterie are the bites you don’t want to miss this summer “Sometimes we go over the top, but mostly we like our products to be the focal point,” says co-owner of Gastros 401 Owen Doyle. “Over-the-top” is a near perfect descriptor for Owen and his business partner Travis Gervasio’s explosive sausage and charcuterie business. Scroll through the company’s Instagram (@gastros401) and you’ll find assembled boards that bring to mind images of Ancient Roman banquet tables: Gigantic blocks of gourmet cheese, mountains of thinly sliced cured meats, piles of plump grapes, broken nuts, and spills of different pickled vegetables for that bit of tang. Their sausages inspire the same air of gluttony: generously stuffed casings with gourmet filling combinations, carefully laid on a toasted bun and topped high with a plethora of condiments. Cue the Pavlovian salivation. Like many other culinary start-ups, both Owen and Travis began their business as a passion project on a whim. Says Owen, “We were roommates and always discussed owning our own business...It actually started out as a drunken conversation.” Soon after their discussion, they began buying equipment for a hotdog cart. The pair would make

hotdogs in their apartment kitchen, practicing recipes until they were just right. Eventually, Gastros 401 was selling their products faster than they could make them, and the tag-team expanded to become the pop-up and catering force it is today. All of Gastros 401’s products are made from Heritage Berkshire pork and 7x Wagyu beef. Owen laments that the company would love to use locally sourced meats, but unfortunately, the farms here in Rhode Island cannot keep up with production. However, they do use local farms for their produce and other products at catering events. If you’re overwhelmed by what to order at Travis and Owen’s pop-up, start with their most popular creation: The Bacon Cheddar Wurst. This is a beef and pork sausage stuffed with cheese and bacon topped with braised onions. Then go back for some Spicy Chorizo, or their Famous Dog. For information about Gastros 401’s pop-up schedule, follow them on Instagram, for catering inquiries, email them at Gastros401@gmail.com, Gastros401.com. -Lauren Vella

Food & Drink FOOD NEWS

Feelin’ Hot! (But Not Too Hot) SourceFire Sauce isn’t in the business of melting your face off

For some, hot sauce makes absolutely no sense. Who would actively subject themselves to pain during mealtime, arguably one of the most enjoyable times of day? For others, dabbing hot sauce on whatever they’re eating is almost necessary to devour the food in front of them. Hot sauce fanatics crave the hum of heat in their mouths. They relish that fiery sensation, tastefully cut with the tang of vinegar and subtle sweetness of ingredients like mango or sweet potato. The creators of SourceFire Sauce are such fanatics. They believe that hot sauces enhance the eating experience, and they’re not here to blow your head off with heat. Jon DiBiaso had been making hot sauce for about 10 years before a college friend introduced him to his soon-to-be business partner Todd Garrison. According to Jon, Todd was a willing taste tester for his small batch creations. Then one night, over what Jon refers to as “a few...dozen beers,” they decided to start a company together. Some time later, SourceFire Sauce was born. All of the hot sauce company’s recipes are concoctions inspired by Jon and Todd’s travels. The duo glean flavor profiles for their sauces from Asia, the American South,

42

the Carribean, and parts of Europe. If either one of them has an idea about a flavor that might work, they go with it and adjust accordingly. Their most successful recipes come to life with a bit of persistence and pain. “After a few tubs of ice cream and crying over a sink, we land on which peppers we want to use and start to finalize the sauce” says Jon. Perhaps what makes this company so intriguing is how unique their sauces are. The company’s JA’Mun Jamaican mustard and Master Tater sweet potato hot sauce provide big, balanced flavor that expands the inexperienced palate and surprises the seasoned hot sauce connoisseur. Part of their appeal is that they are flavorful and don’t overwhelm your mouth with heat. This, says John, is all part of their plan. “If we want to be successful our customers have to like what they’re adding to their food, so we aim to be that condiment you keep going after to add a little extra to your dishes...We aim to be a versatile option that enhances your meal, not numb your tongue.” SourceFire Sauce is available via the Hope & Main App. Warren, SourceFireSauce.com. -Lauren Vella

Same Wharf, New Tavern

The Wharf Tavern has been a Warren fixture since 1955, serving seafood in a fine dining atmosphere and an unbeatable view of the Narragansett Bay. It’s changed ownership several times over the years, but one thing remains the same: it’s the kind of local establishment that lets boaters dock, dust off their Sperrys, and grab a cocktail and fresh catch of the day. The new co-owners Melissa Ferris and Peter Cabral bought the Tavern in May 2018. In January of this year, they felt the establishment needed a bit of sprucing up and closed the restaurant for renovations. The Wharf Tavern recently reopened on May 14, unveiling a whole new decor. Melissa describes the renovations as more youthful and contemporary. She rearranged the bar so that it now faces water, brought in two new event spaces, and now hosts several events during the weekends. The atmosphere feels bright and nautical with wooden accents, a white ceiling, and navy blue seats. Melissa says that she and Peter radically changed the menu to match the modern renovations. A fusion of seafood, American cuisine, and elements of Spanish- and Asian-inspired foods such as paella and Asian fish tacos (Melissa says that they are the two most popular dishes, in addition to the stuffed lobster and fish n’ chips) are now available. One of her favorite parts of owning the restaurant is seeing the looks on customers’ faces when they walk in the door. She loves hearing stories from families who’ve been eating at the restaurant for 30 years, many of whom mention that the Tavern needed a few updates. Whether you’re a longtime customer or a potential newcomer, the Wharf Tavern offers stunning bay-side views, refreshing drinks, and hearty, inspired dishes for the whole family. 215 Water St, Warren. Food & Drink EXPERIENCE

by Alastair Cairns

Wicked Good Wasabi Portside Tavern serves up Asian cuisine with a New England accent After what seemed like weeks of rain, we used a rare sunny day to visit Bristol’s newest eatery, Portside Tavern. We got a little carried away with the summer feel. It wasn’t really that warm, but temperature be damned, we were going to eat al fresco. Portside Tavern replaces the very long-lived Redlefsen’s, but inside, it was hard to imagine. Any memory of that strange, German unicorn was exorcised, surprisingly with little work. It was auf wiedersehen to the old paint job and hello to warmer woods and brighter colors a more modern, slightly nautical look. The skeleton of the restaurant already perfectly suited the tavern concept, with the long bar room pouring beers, the letterbox kitchen sending apps, and the open main dining room roaring busily with customers. We chose to eat outside. It was warm, and we wouldn’t want to miss the sunset or the

brisk wind that followed. Beer was abundant on the drink menu (as it should be at a tavern), with wine and cocktails filling in the gaps. Most of the wine was Californian but the majority of the beers were local, with some diversions, like my tall glass of Weihenstephaner ($6). Between this hefeweissbier and my wife’s refreshing Portside Collins ($9) we had all the classic components of a summer sundowner. The menu was squarely what you’d expect from New England comfort food, if the menu had done some backpacking around Asia while wearing a Red Sox hat. Amongst the lobster rolls and surf and turf, there was banh mi, Thai veggie wraps, Korean bbq, and a sesame salad with wontons. It’s usually against my better judgment, but I decided to spin the wheel of fusion. I was pleasantly surprised. There’s no adherence to authenticity here, but there’s definitely

a sense of whimsy when it comes to finger food. We did a sesame seared tuna ($15) – very lightly seared and well cut – and I stacked it, wasabi, and pickled carrots on top of a fried wonton. The bite was like eating a mix between an American sushi roll and nachos – the perfect bar food. Similarly, between the very satisfying peanut sauce, crisp cabbage, and the act of rolling up, the Thai lettuce wraps made for an awesome crunch. The sunset over, our mains arrived. My wife had a lobster roll ($23), and I had a Portside Salad with chicken breast ($19). The chicken breast was moist and supple, perhaps even sous vide, based on the fowl’s juiciness. Bacon, crumbled cornbread, sunflower, and arugula made for a really hearty, filling salad. We settled up happy and scuffled to our coats and our car, stopping only for an ice cream. What better way to cap off a cool summer night? We’d already had salads, wheat beer, and lobster rolls, so why not top it all off with the quintessential summer dessert? Sharing ice cream with the headlights illuminating the tiny ripples of waves off the sheltered bay, all rolling on the summer with the portside.

Tips Portside is right at the start of the bike path in Bristol, but it’s probably better to end here for a well-deserved drink. There’s plenty of options, but bring a beer lover

Food & Drink IN THE KITCHEN

by Lauren Vella

All In The Family

Photography by Savannah Barkley for The Bay Magazine

Barrington Butchery’s Mike McKeever explains how this profession is “in his blood” Growing up working in his family’s market in Warwick, co-owner of Barrington Butchery Mike McKeever knew that he wanted to carry on the family business. The art of butchering is a skill that has been passed down in Mike’s family from his grandfather to his father, and from his father to him. That’s why when he opened the butchery in the East Bay in 2018, it was important to preserve the family feel – from the butchering techniques to the customer service. “The focus is on our customers, and we make sure they get what they want,” says Mike. “I want the best for my family, and your family, too.” After his parents sold the family market, Mike went to work for a retail meat-cutting chain, but he always knew that he wanted to own his own business. Over Christmas dinner a few years ago, Mike and his father-in-law Larry Russolino noticed that Persimmon Provisions had just closed in Barrington. At the time, Larry had also recently retired and was looking for a new challenge. “The timing,” says Mike, “was perfect.” In April, the two opened the family-run meat shop. “We realized that Barrington was an ideal spot, a family-oriented community with people who are passionate and knowledgeable about good food.” The brother-in-law/father-in-law team’s knowledge encompasses the range of information to run a butchery. Mike knows about the different cuts of meat and how to get the most out of each animal, and Larry is the recipes guy. The former trained chef loves talking about food, preparing food, and eating food. In fact, Mike encourages his customers to speak with Larry if they are unsure how to best prepare the meat they purchase. All of this knowledge is what the duo says bolsters impeccable customer service, separating the Barrington Butchery experience from your depersonalized, lackluster interaction at the butcher counter of your corporate chain grocer. The owners also try to meet each and every one of their customer’s requests. “We are unique in that we try to satisfy any and all requests from our customers. If you want a specific mixture of burger, pounded chicken breasts, diced meats for your kebabs, on-the-spot mar-

inated items, unusual items like venison, wild boar, rabbit, bison, calves liver, whole pigs, or quail, we can get it for you.” The meat purveyor makes sure that all of the products that he stocks are properly fed and ethically raised. The Barrington Butchery sells beef from Black Angus cattle, pork from pasture-raised pigs from a small farm in Vermont, and lamb from a free-range environment Australia.

It’s clear that Mike and Larry take pride in their work, and, Mike says, the customers can probably attest to their service. The only thing that Mike regrets is that his father isn’t here to witness his success. “My dad died unexpectedly a few years ago, so I wish he could have seen what I accomplished.”
