T

he warmth and slower pace of the summer months provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect on this last year and to plan for the year ahead. I hope you read this issue of Vista and appreciate the wonder of such accomplishment during a global pandemic and see the future of our beloved school as exciting and bright. It is!

Summer can also be a blessed distraction from the frenzy and pressures of the rest of the year, and I hope you all are taking time to rejuvenate and reconnect. Simply being together is such a gift after so many months apart. We cannot wait to be together as a whole school community on campus again this Fall.

But this summer is more than an opportunity for reflection, planning, and distraction. It is a time for gratitude. I am grateful for the 500 Pioneers who will be on campus this year, learning, growing, serving, and leading, and for their families who say "yes" to a Providence education and extend to us such profound trust and support every day. I am grateful for our dedicated and courageous faculty and staff who thrived in the most difficult year to be an educator in more than a century. I am grateful for our Board who never wavers in their commitment to support our mission and ensure the continued vitality of the school. I am grateful for the countless alumni, community partners, and benefactors who contribute their time, talent, and treasure to keep the mission and charism of the Sisters of Providence alive and well here on Buena Vista Street.

REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD! The 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who opted-in for in-person learning returned to campus after Easter Break. For the Class of 2024, this was their first time attending classes on campus and this milestone was not lost on anyone. Freshman students received tours of the Providence High School campus and fun activities were planned for all of the returning students. Additionally, hanging out in the new "Play Zone" space on campus has been a big hit for everyone—students and faculty/staff members, too!

ATHLETIC SEASON RECAP

Under the leadership of new COACH KRISTINEH ZADOURIAN, GIRLS BASKETBALL finished second in the Prep League and made a deep run in the playoffs, losing in the CIFSS Semifinals. The team also qualified for the state regionals and finished the season with an overall record of 15-6. Individual accolades include All-CIF and 1st Team All-Prep League for AUDREY SAYOC ‘22, 2nd Team All-Prep League for NATALIE HAROUTOUNIAN ‘22, AVA TIBBS ‘22 and LIA KRUMIAN ‘24.

SOFTBALL led by COACH MANNY TRAVIESO ranked second in Division 7, also finished second in the Prep League and advanced to the semifinals. The team finished the season with a 11-5 record. The team was paced by All-CIF selections, BREANNA PELAEZ ‘24 and OLYVIA RUTTER ‘24. Both were also 1st Team All-Prep League. LUCIA MOSQUERA ‘22 and BELEN BENITO ‘24 we’re also selected to the 1st Team, while MALIA RODE ‘24 and KAITLYN DELA ROSA ‘21 were named to the All-Prep League 2nd Team.

HUNTER CAMPEN ’22, member of BOYS GOLF led by COACH ERNEST SIY, competed in the Prep League Golf Finals at Brookside Golf Course. With his fourth place overall league finish, Hunter was named to the All-Prep League 1st Team qualifying him for the CIF-SS Northern Regional Individual Tournament where he ended his season.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS Providence High School added a new Welcome Center to the front entrance of campus. Visitors will check-in at this location prior to being welcomed into campus and deliveries will now be sent there instead of the main office.

Additionally, a special "Play Zone" was created as an extra space for students to hang out.

PIONEERS IN TRAINING P.I.T. Crew, otherwise known as Pioneers in Training, is a two week experience in which students build relationships with their peers while getting familiar with the ins and outs of Providence High School. While most of P.I.T. Crew was held online, the Class of 2025 and transfer students joined us for two days of inperson on-campus activities.

CINEMA ARTS SHOWCASE Cinema Arts Focus Program students were celebrated at the annual Cinema Arts Showcase and Awards event for their creativity and artistry in film. The live-streamed broadcast featured more than 50 original student-produced works.

COVID-19 MEMORIAL Campus Ministry created a memorial around our Mother Mary statue to honor the lives of those lost during this past year, especially those lost to COVID-19. Students wrote the names of their deceased loved ones on rocks and placed the rocks around the statue as they thought of and prayed for those no longer with us. This represents the Paschal mystery and the stone that was rolled away, revealing to the disciples that Jesus has risen.

PHS ATHLETES COMMIT TO COLLEGIATE SPORTS Congratulations to two seniors who have committed to continuing their athletic careers at the college level! A Re-envisioned Admissions Year Interview with Providence Admissions Office, Mr. Scott Turner & Mr. Greg Castro

T

he 2020-2021 admissions cycle ended just as COVID-19 entered everyone’s radar. Acceptance letters were sent out and days before PHS made the decision to move to online distance learning, the annual welcome dinner for new students and their families occurred on a rainy evening in the Student Activity Center with approximately 370 people in attendance. We shook hands, greeted people in person, mingled with and ate among strangers, and had no idea that this would be the last in-person event on campus for a year!

Fast forward, and the admissions process for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year was an entirely different process! Nearly everything about it had to be reenvisioned. Yet, the efforts were rewarded as enrollment of incoming students is exceptionally high.

of Admissions share their experiences about what this atypical admissions cycle was like.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE HAVING AN ENTIRE ADMISSIONS CYCLE BE ENTIRELY ONLINE?

Mr. Turner: Things shut down about a week after our Welcome Party for newly admitted students. As we finished up enrollment for this school year and began to plan for the upcoming admissions cycle, it became clear pretty quickly that this pandemic was going to last a while.

Fortunately, our team really entered into this planning with a sense of optimism. We are always trying to evolve and improve, and what seemed at first like limitations, we genuinely saw as opportunities. Meeting families is the best part of our jobs, so the idea of not having people physically visit our campus certainly wasn’t ideal, but we knew that we wanted to re-imagine our process but still be able to create relationships with prospective families.

Mr. Castro: This admission season started out with us

honoring MRS. JUDY UMECK as she moved into the role of Director of Mission Integration and Adult Formation after leading the Admissions Department for almost 25 years. Mr. Turner was new in the role and was faced with the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. An online admissions process is not something I ever thought we would do at Providence. I mean, we are not an online school and we do best when we are meeting students and families, shaking their hands and physically showing them what Providence High School has to offer them. Mr. Turner and I met early and often last spring to plan and create online experiences that would allow families to get to know us, to hear from our students, our parents, our faculty and staff, and to get close without having to be on campus.

Going remote meant that we had to recreate all of those personal encounters through our computer screens and we had never done that before. The best thing about this year is that from the outset, our department viewed this as an opportunity rather than a setback. We threw traditional ideas out the window and set no limits to the creative process. Although this year has been challenging, it has opened new doors for our department and has proven that we can overcome any challenge thrown our way. This experience has improved the way we work, our creative process, and has made lasting changes to our admissions process.

YOU BOTH SEEM TO GENUINELY ENJOY THE ADMISSIONS EVENTS AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET PEOPLE. HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO CONNECT WITH INTERESTED STUDENTS AND FAMILIES? Mr. Turner: That was certainly our most significant concern. We traditionally spend much of our time having face-to-face conversations with students and parents, so moving that online was a challenge. It has always been my philosophy that it is part of our job to give prospective families access to the real Providence. Even though they were not on campus observing our students in classrooms and meeting people in person, we wanted to make sure that we still had meaningful conversations with them. Of course, this is different online, but we like to think that we created events that were not reliant on elaborate PowerPoint presentations. We still wanted to have meaningful conversations with people. We tried to engage with families and have them participate. This is

what we do in person, and I like to think that we were able to accomplish some of that in a virtual space.

Mr. Castro: Connecting with students and families is what we do best in our department. We work tirelessly to build genuine relationships with our prospective students and families. I can remember my initial thoughts of real concern over the thought of a completely distanced process. Let’s be real, no one planned or prepared for this pandemic and the need to build distance into our daily lives. I found that this pandemic and situation brought about great conversation with families. All the time spent at home allowed for parents and students to really think and converse about their decisions, especially on the topic of school and what to expect from school.

I found that I was more accessible through the online world and it provided many opportunities to have honest conversations and truly build those relationships.

WHAT WERE THE ADVANTAGES OF AND CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY EVERYTHING BEING VIRTUAL? Mr. Turner: There is a certain advantage to having virtual events in that we can fit them into a schedule that works better for some families, and they do not have to worry about traffic and budgeting that extra time getting to and from an event. Before this past year, we rarely used video chat as a means of communication. We quickly came to love the opportunity to see people during our conversations, and many families liked that as well and preferred video chat over the standard phone call. Not having guests visit campus physically and really getting a feel for it, was a challenge for sure. Students and parents can learn so much about how they feel about Providence by being here and experiencing it firsthand. Therefore, we wanted our campus tours to be live and interactive, so that offered technical challenges, but in the end, we think that we were able to offer a pretty good experience.

Mr. Castro: One major benefit to being online was that there was no limit to the size of our audience. When we are physically on campus for events and tours, we are limited by the physical space of our campus or the spaces we utilize. This digital world allowed us to expand our events and engage with more families at a time. Through our planning process, we were able to create events that would bring in larger groups and then connect with them through intentional smaller groups

through breakout rooms and other areas that interested them. The convenience of the digital experience took some getting used to, but was definitely a positive for prospective Pioneers. There was no need to show up early, because you didn’t have to plan for traffic or look for a parking spot. Everyone was able to attend our events from the comfort of their own couch, office, or kitchen while cooking for the family. It was evident through their responses and comments that families appreciated the ways in which we were able to creatively involve their students' participation in our online events.

Going forward, I would love to keep a virtual component to our admission process.

WERE YOU SURPRISED BY THE NUMBER OF APPLICANTS?

Mr. Turner: One of my concerns was that the pandemic would result in many families deciding that they couldn’t take the risk of enrolling their child in a tuition-based school with so much economic uncertainty. I did anticipate a drop. Fortunately, that didn’t happen, and the number of applications was strong.

It’s hard to say, but I think we were able to articulate to families what Providence is really about, and this seems to resonate with people. I’m so proud to be a part of this community and am consistently impressed with our students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumni. I’m grateful that families were so willing to really engage with us throughout the admissions process and take the time to get to know us.

Mr. Castro: Having graduated from PHS in 2002, I was fortunate to experience Providence High School and our school community. Since our opening in 1955, Providence High School has definitely evolved and changed much in “responding to the signs of the times,” but our community has stayed the same. Our welcoming students, faculty, and staff are truly what make Providence special and our department has been working hard to bring more people in to see and hear what makes Providence unique. At the heart of our school, we put people first, our students first, and I think that resonates with students and families looking for a high school.

ENROLLMENT FOR THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR IS HEALTHY, IF NOT A BIT HIGHER THAN USUAL. WHAT DO HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY “SELL THE YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS TO? SCHOOL” TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS AND PARENTS Mr. Turner: Our goal in admissions is to help families WITHOUT THEM VISITING THE CAMPUS? understand who we are as a community and as a learning institution. We understand that it is all about fit. Families are looking for the best possible fit for their child, and

Mr. Turner: Again, I think we found ways to help families get to know us, and we tried to interact with people like we would in person. We try not to approach the process

as a sale but as relationship building. We understand that families will sometimes choose another school. Whether they come to Providence or not, we want them to feel like our process was a positive experience. The thing is, we really do want to get to know them. I like to think we were able to convey that in an online setting.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE TO NOT HAVING THE HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST (HSPT)? WHAT WAS THE REACTION FROM PARTNER SCHOOLS AND/OR APPLYING FAMILIES?

Mr. Turner: While there were some parents who were initially unsure about the new policy, we received so much positive feedback about the decision. The why behind the change was really to benefit the students.

ARE THERE ANY TRENDS THAT YOU ARE NOTICING, SUCH AS AN INCREASE OR DECREASE IN APPLICATIONS FROM CATHOLIC/PUBLIC/INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS? Mr. Turner: Applications from our Catholic partners schools has always been pretty strong. In recent years, the number of students coming to us from other independent or public schools has increased. There are good public schools in our area, so many families move here when their children are very young so they can take advantage of that. However, there are more and more families who may never have considered independent school who see what we offer and are willing to take a closer look. Families want strong academics, a close knit community, and a place where their children can grow into young adults who live their lives with compassion and use their skills to better the world around them. I really believe that Providence does that, and this is resonating with families.

MOVING FORWARD, IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THIS YEAR’S ADMISSIONS PROCESS THAT YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE? Mr. Turner: The convenience of virtual Admissions events does better meet the needs of some families.

We look forward to being on campus in-person with guests, but we also want to offer some virtual Admissions experiences as well. We are very comfortable running Admissions events online, and for those families who want that, we are happy to offer it.

Financial Assistance During a Pandemic with Mrs. Vickie Bagwell, Financial Assistance Coordinator

M

rs. Vickie Bagwell, Financial Assistance Coordinator, has been on staff at Providence since 1999 working in the Development Office for the vast majority of her tenure. During the summer of 2019, Mrs. Bagwell retired from her role as Providence's Director of Development in order to focus on financial assistance. The financial assistance process for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year was also different than in years past, as Mrs. Bagwell explained.

"In prior years, financial assistance awards were communicated by letter, and families had to return a signed letter indicating whether or not they were accepting the award. This year we had to notify everyone electronically. All applicants needed to be notified at 5:00 pm on March 5th, which necessitated having to set up over 600 individual personalized emails. While it was a challenge to make sure everything was correct, we were able to set up an immediate response form which turned out to be very efficient. The Financial Assistance Committee met virtually, which was actually more convenient.

This year, in addition to more applications, there was an increase in need, and also many families who had never needed assistance in the past found themselves with financial need. We worked individually with each family that had financial hardship due to COVID-19, and granted many COVID-19 relief grants.

I really enjoy working with the families, getting to know their circumstances, and I find it rewarding to work with them to make a Providence education possible. The ability to honor the mission of the Sisters of Providence by assisting families in need is incredibly motivating."

Called to Serve: From Near or Afar

By Ms. Janet Fontaine, Christian Service Coordinator

O

ur Christian Service Program is modeled after the work of our foundress, Blessed Emilie Gamelin and the Sisters of Provide nce. Emilie Gamelin was known as the friend of the poor, the friend to orphans, the friend to seniors, the friend to the sick and the unhoused. Emilie spent her whole life dedicated to providing care and hope for the needy and vulnerable around her. She had tremendous tragedy in her life, and she turned to Our Mother of Sorrows for guidance and inspiration. Our school community is here because of her efforts, outreach, and service. She and Mother Joseph continue to be a source of inspiration for us and they set the bar very high for our Christian Service program.

During the past year, we continued our Christian Service program and did not adjust the hours. We just re-imagined the program. We felt that in a global pandemic, the need was even greater to reach out to those who are suffering, and it also benefited our students' mental health. Finding

the joy in giving, and the benefits of taking the focus off of ourselves, was a saving grace for our whole community.

Students stepped up to collaborate with me on their own personal projects, such as making masks, making care packages for first responders, making hygiene kits for the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC), and making paracord bracelets, scarves, and hats for our soldiers.

Together in our We Care Wednesday/Thankful Thursday program, we sent gratitude collages to local hospitals and fire stations, sent pen pal letters to the elderly in isolated homes, and continued to mentor and tutor younger children online through Microsoft Teams.

We had to pivot and think outside the box to still meet the needs of our community. We looked within our own expanded safe bubbles and neighborhoods to see how we could serve, uplift, encourage, and lend a hand.

Through our Kindness Walks, Gratitude Trains, and Giving Runs, we encouraged, uplifted, and supported those in

our community. I brought a group of students on board my Christian Service Task Force, and we met over the summer of 2020 to try and find any service opportunities that were still out there to bring into our fall semester.

We didn't find very much, and we went through and researched so many sites, week after week. I realized I had to create my own program of service, keeping the safety of our students as my highest priority.

One of the most unexpected blessings that I have found is the level of commitment on our students' part. They truly are looking at their world with new eyes. I like to say they are looking at their world with "BOLDer" eyes. One of my weekly We Care Wednesday/Thankful Thursday outreach activities was to look around us and really see our family, friends, and neighbors. I told our students, if they really look, they can see who needs them. Instead of New Year's resolutions we had New Year's revelations.

In our virtual walks, runs, gallops, and trots, our students created maps of random acts of kindness to do in their families, expanded bubbles, and neighborhoods. It was all about kindness and easing the way of others who needed that extra help. I set a sample/example and then they looked in their world and saw where the need was, and created a plan of action.

All of the outreach we used to do in-person was modified.

For example, for the first week of school, we used to put uplifting messages on sticky notes and peppered them all throughout the school. Well, in our remote learning environment, we wrote uplifting messages and peppered them all throughout our houses—kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, hallways, mirrors etc. October is always the month when we do most of our charity walks. This past year, we designed charity posters for all the charities we are passionate about as a school community. When we returned to campus all handmade posters were put up. The poster project illustrated that even in a global pandemic, these causes were not forgotten, and also, it gave voice to the causes and charities that our students are passionate about.

During the month of December, we usually get to shop for our Adopt-a-Families, wrap the gifts up, and meet at the Cathedral and get to deliver the packages to the families.

This year, we were only able to buy gift cards, and we couldn't deliver, but we made sure to make handmade cards so each family could feel that special connection

from our family to theirs. On campus, we usually make Trick or Treat Bags for those living in temporary housing, but this year our students decorated amazing bags, dropped them off at school, and I picked up the bags, filled my trunk with candy and delivered them to NoHo Home Alliance. We did the same for Easter. As soon as we returned to campus, we decorated birthday bags for Project Angel Food.

One observation that I have made is there is a heightened mindfulness about the service we have been doing that has been the result of looking in every nook and cranny for innovative and new ways to serve. We have been enlightened in our vision of service. I am going to take everything we have learned together and provide an even richer and more robust Christian Service program this coming school year.

Necessity is truly the mother of invention, and I am so grateful we kept our Christian Service requirements intact when we left campus in March of 2020. It was challenging at first, but I looked to Emilie Gamelin and the Sisters of Providence for their guidance, to figure out a virtual outreach program, and they did not let me down.

Introducing our ESJ Coordinator Ms. Shanica Dale, Equity & Social Justice Coordinator and Personal Counselor

M

s. Shanica Dale was named as the first Equity & Social Justice Coordinator at Providence High School. Additionally, Ms. Dale will continue as the personal counselor in the Counseling Department as she takes on this additional responsibility serving the entire PHS community as ESJ Coordinator.

Providence High School is rooted in the heritage of the Sisters of Providence, their commitment to Catholic social teaching, and service to those who are poor and vulnerable. During fall 2019, PHS established three task forces reflective of that heritage: Wellness, Environmental Sustainability, and the Equity & Social Justice Task Force.

Dale in this leadership role. Providence High School plans to add further support for the equity and social justice initiatives by adding a Director of ESJ in 2022. Until then, Ms. Dale, as the ESJ Coordinator, will act as the primary liaison to both the PHS Leadership Team and Board of Regents. Ms. Dale will champion our ESJ initiatives and oversee the expansion of our Equity and Social Justice programming. Together as a community, we will continue to create an equitable and inclusive culture at Providence High School.

"PHS has responded to the call of action for equity and social justice. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to dedicate myself to that call within this new role as the ESJ Coordinator," said Ms. Shanica Dale.

"I look forward to building on my personal experience with equity and social justice and growing through leadership and collaboration with the ESJ Task Force. Daniel Hale Williams was born January 18, 1856 He’s known as the first black heart surgeon, although he was mixed His mother Sarah was African, his father black and white They both worked very hard, to ensure they raised him right When Daniel was 9, his father died tragically His mother couldn’t handle it, so the family changed drastically The kids moved in with relatives, mom moved to Illinois Then Williams ran away to Baltimore, to a life he’d soon enjoy He was raised in Hollidaysburg P.A. He was a shoemaker and a barber But because he was so ambitious He took his education farther In 1880 he attended Chicago Medical College He struggled a bit with his studies, but still gained a wealth of knowledge Daniel met a local doctor, which he greatly admired A great teacher he was, Daniel was truly inspired Dr. Henry Palmer taught Williams, everything he knew Cardiovascular medicine, was the career he decided to pursue After interning for a year, he opened a private practice His goal was equal rights, some would call him an activist There were racial barriers, because he was black It didn’t deter him from his goals, although he was under attack Williams founded a hospital, with an interracial staff This was only the start, he continued to perfect his craft Appointed Chief of Surgery, at Freedman’s Hospital in D.C. He established a school, for black nurse trainees Daniel was the only black Charter member of the A.C.O.S in 1913 Howard and Wilber Force awarded him honorary degrees He had a variety of achievements and accomplishments Being on the top 100 list of African Americans, was a historic event Daniel is the first black doctor, to perform a successful open-heart surgery Although he died on August 4, 1931, we still honor his contribution to society.

College Admissions Interview with Mrs. Clara Bird, Director of College Counseling

T

he college admissions process has evolved throughout the last few years, most recently as a response to admissions scandals that were made known publicly, and the effects of the pandemic.

Providence High School's Director of College Counseling, Mrs. Clara Bird, reflected on her experience with the college admissions process, especially during a most unusual year.

SINCE THE PANDEMIC BEGAN LAST SPRING, WAS THERE AN UPTICK IN STUDENTS OPTING FOR A “GAP YEAR” OR NOT CHOOSING THEIR PREFERRED SCHOOL DUE TO ONLINE LEARNING AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL? Yes. We saw this across the nation and at PHS. In the Class of 2020, we had some students decide to take a gap year because there was so much uncertainty with the pandemic in May of 2020. As we know, colleges went virtual for the 2020-2021 school year, so the freshman year experience wasn’t traditional and for some students,

that was enough to encourage a gap year. We also had students decide to stay closer to home. We had a few students that were accepted into great schools on the east coast yet chose to attend a four year in California because of the pandemic. As it turned out, almost all students were learning from home, regardless of where they attended.

WHAT DID YOU SEE THIS YEAR, AS FAR AS WHAT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES SENIORS APPLIED TO? In the Class of 2021, we saw applications to all types of schools across the nation. The pandemic didn’t slow down the application process, in fact, the number of applications per students increased from seven to 10 at PHS. With standardized testing being optional at most schools, more students decided to throw their hat in the ring, so to speak, which is why we saw more applications to the UC system and private schools. We also saw acceptance rates decrease at a good number of schools because so many more students applied to more colleges

- more applications, same number of spots, automatically leads to a decrease in the application rate, it is basic math.

IN WHAT WAYS HAVE COLLEGES AMENDED THEIR ACCEPTANCE POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS? With the pandemic, students were not able to take the SAT and ACT. Several of our seniors managed to register for an exam but were never able to actually sit for the test.

I had one student that registered for four different exam dates and each one was canceled. Which is why in March 2020, about 1,000 of the 2,300 colleges and universities offered students the option to apply to their institutions without submitting SAT or ACT scores, and several dozen operated as “test blind,” wherein all applicants were reviewed without testing results. This year, over 1,400 have gone test optional for the Class of 2022 and some, plan to stay test optional.

Last spring, with campuses closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of colleges pushed Decision Day back a month or more. Decision day is usually May 1st and it is usually the day high school seniors commit to a college. This year, most colleges resumed the traditional May 1st date.

stressful this year as the Class of 2021 did not have the ability to visit campuses. Yes, virtual tours existed, but they will never replace visiting a campus in person.

Getting a feel for the school, sitting in the library, checking out the dorms, all are extremely important in making a final decision.

WITH THE ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL VIRTUALLY, WERE STUDENTS MORE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING DIFFERENT COLLEGE OPTIONS THAN USUAL? I have to admit that going virtual did help expose more students to colleges across the nation. We had more college representative visits, more college fairs and more information than ever before and it was because it was just one click away. That part was amazing! I had representatives that had never reached out before schedule visits, there were more webinars, more opportunities to get information, and almost always, it was recorded so if it conflicted with the student’s schedule, it could be viewed at a later time.

ASIDE FROM THE OBVIOUS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO MEET IN PERSON, WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE IN ASSISTING STUDENTS WITH THE COLLEGE APPLICATION COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE WAS A HOT TOPIC AFTER THE AND DECISION PROCESS? We had already known that the SAT and ACT scores strongly correlated with wealth. That fact, plus COVID testing difficulties, have led more colleges to go test optional, in hopes of making admissions more fair for all students.

DID STUDENTS APPEAR MORE OR LESS STRESSED THAN USUAL ABOUT MAKING COLLEGE DECISIONS? Seniors are always saying that the college application process is stressful, I don’t think that changed. I would say that making the final decision for students was more

they needed. For example, I got an overwhelming number of seniors say “yes” to a virtual drop-in day. Each week, I hosted a drop in for seniors to come and get their essays reviewed, questions answered, etc. I would stay online until the last student left, regardless of the time. The drop in was once a week for an entire semester.

To meet the needs, the Counseling Department stepped up and created more opportunities for parents and students to get help, from Coffee with Counselors for parents to video resources and drop-in hours for students. We just wanted to make sure students and parents knew we were there to help in any way we could.

Class of 2021 Graduation

F

or the first time in Providence history, the Class of 2021 took part in the first traditional graduation ceremony on campus! In years past, graduation was held at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank, at the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, and most recently in 2020, graduation took the form of a Graduation Parade due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Baccalaureate Mass, typically held at neighboring St. Finbar Church, also took place at PHS in the Student Activity Center. Having these milestone events on campus was especially meaningful considering the majority of the school year was held online and provided the seniors with the opportunity to properly say goodbye to Providence High School.

This year's valedictorian was KATELYN ALVARADO '21, who will attend UCLA, and the salutatorian was ELISE SANCHEZ

'21, who will also attend UCLA. Additionally, ELISE was the recipient of the Mother Joseph Award. This year's Spirit Award recipient was BEN CALOZA '21, who will attend CSUN and KAYLA ARAKELIAN '21, who will attend the University of Washington, was awarded the 2021 Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award.

Additionally, the Davis family (ROBERT '18, ANNA '21, and CLAIRE '21) and the Fadly family (ANTHONY '18, MARY '21, and MICHAEL '21) were recipients of the Pioneering Family Award, which recognizes families with three or more Providence High School graduates.

Congratulations, Class of 2021! The Providence High School community is proud of all of your achievements, especially during a most unusual year.

A significant advantage and unique opportunity of having a virtual Career Day was that the fifth-grade students at St. Patrick Catholic School could attend Timothy Ford's session, a Lead Software Engineer at Blizzard. This special opportunity coordinated by PHS faculty member MS. MICHELLE LAFORCE. Additionally, a few potential incoming freshman students also received an invitation to participate in Career Day.

Overall, Career Day as a virtual event was a success.

There was no need for speakers to commute to us and a few speaker were able to fit this into their busy schedules more easily, such as neurosurgeon SEAN KALOOSTIAN '03 who was able to speak to students during his lunch break. This was one of the events that benefited from Providence High School being remote, even if we had to pivot our initial approach.

BARBARA LEWANDOWSKI MURRIETA '62—"I've been married 54 years, have four children, and 10 grandchildren. Took advantage of our time in isolation, bittersweet 2020 (lemons), and wrote my autobiography (lemonade)! It was a monumental, but rewarding accomplishment. I thank my PHS education for instilling in me essential skills to be a productive member of society: compassion, creativity, determination, curiosity, perseverance, kindness, integrity, ambition, etc.

I credit my PHS teachers for my career decision to be a teacher of 40+ years. It was especially gratifying to be able to return to PHS as a teacher for a brief semester in 1966-67. I will always be grateful for my formative years at Providence. They are essential to who I am today.

LORRAINE BELLIS-MARK '76 would like to report that her son Kevin Mark '12 designed and built a portion of the Perseverance rover that recently landed successfully on Mars. Kevin is a NASA employee at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. He previously worked on the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory which was successfully launched in 2019. Proof positive that the old adage, "The sky's the limit" does not apply to Providence alumni, for they reach beyond the sky!

We started dating toward the end of our sophomore year, and now more than 19 years later, we are happily married, with our three year old son, Jameson, and dog Chili. We remember fondly Providence and the special place it has in our story.”

Josh also received the USC Student Recognition Award for his academic excellence, outstanding leadership, and significant contributions to the university community.

JESSICA DICOLA ‘10—"Singing my heart out in choir and being the first class to experience the drama department [were sacred encounters]."

The teachers, staff, Mr. Godinez, Mr. LeBreton, my schoolmates and their families, coaches—everything.

Providence was such a positive and memorable time of my life because of the beautiful people in it! I still have my former teachers message or call me to check-in.

Most of my friends in my class are still in my life. I can't thank my high school enough for being and continuing to be a blessing in my life! Side note, I still run the LA Marathon every year since my sophomore year. My school counselor at the time, Ms. Collins, suggested that I join the SRLA club to overcome my anxiety and stress.

Running has been a major therapeutic of my life since and I have not skipped a year running the LA Marathon (13 years in a row!)"

a message from our DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

T

he end of a year is always a bit challenging. You try to make sure you have closed out all the work of the year that is about to finish while simultaneously focusing on the work that is vital to the success of the coming year. With that bifurcated mindset being admitted to, I would like to update you on a few things past and future.

This year’s Gala, chaired by Board of Regents member and current parent, Kevin Wehrenberg, was a great success, bringing our community together in celebration despite the fact we could not be in person. From the incredible opening number created in collaboration by the Performing Arts and Cinema Arts Departments to the senior class tribute created by CHARLIE WEHRENBERG ‘23 and the 65th Anniversary tribute video created by current parent Kevin Sizemore and his son, GUNNAR SIZEMORE ‘23, it was an evening filled with moments that connected us to the power of this mission. We thank all of you who donated, gave your time, your talents, and actively participated to make this a wonderful evening. And, to carry on the joke started by our Chair Kevin, we will be able to have a more comfortable seating experience in the MPR and portions of the Auditorium thanks to all who participated in the paddle raise!

This past year also marked the first time we have reached out to alumni who were involved in sports to ask them to support the current needs of our Athletic Department.

Former Pioneer athletes from a myriad of class years have answered the call. As I write I can see the new cages being installed for our baseball, softball, and golf teams.

If you would like to see your custom pennant displayed in the lobby of our Student Activities Center and be a part of improving the experience for current athletes, be sure to check out the “donate” page under the Athletics tab on the school website.

We will embrace the success of providing alumni the opportunity to support current Pioneers who reflect what their interests were when they attended by reaching out to our chorus and choir alumni to help us send our Providence Singers to Carnegie Hall in the coming year, and to our Medical Focus Program alumni to help DR. HARJANI acquire an incredible piece of technology that will allow current Medical Focus Program students to explore real human bodies in digitally rendered 3-D. We will focus on ensuring that all our work in the coming year is focused on strengthening our community and the emotional bond that we have to this mission, this school, and the humans that make up every part.

Finally, looking at our present for a brief moment: It is with great excitement for her, but a deep sense of loss for us, that I announce MRS. ELIZABETH PARK is moving further south and has accepted a wonderful position at a school closer to her new home. Elizabeth has been an extraordinary support to this team and the entire school, most particularly of recent note, being the lead staff member for this year’s Gala. Please join me in wishing her much success, health, and happiness in her new adventures.
