Provident God, in that time of grief and loss, we lifted up to you all who were affected by the wildfires. We sought comfort for those who lost their homes and belongings and prayed for guidance to safe shelter and supportive communities.
We asked for strength and wisdom for those who worked tirelessly in recovery efforts. May their labor have brought hope and healing, restoring homes, schools, and the connections that sustain us all.
We blessed those who felt displaced and unsettled, that they might have found peace, dignity, and security in your loving embrace. We sought to be instruments of your compassion, extending care and support wherever it was needed.
May we, as a community, have found unity in our faith and trust in your Providence. Let your light have shone in the darkness, bringing renewal and refuge to all.
We asked this in your holy name. Amen.

It is with a mix of emotions, Providence High School shares that Sr. Joeline Santiago, SSS retired at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Sr. Jo has been an integral part of Providence High School since 1992, leaving in 2000 to do fieldwork for her MFT before returning to us in 2004. Over the course of 29 years, Sr. Jo has served in numerous capacities, including as a Front Desk Receptionist, Religious Studies Department Chair and faculty member, Mission Integration Associate, Kairos adult leader, and most recently, as a substitute teacher.
Sr. Jo’s journey with us has been marked by her commitment to our students, and her passion for our heritage, values, and mission. Her contributions have significantly enriched our community over the years, and her presence has been a source of joy for both students and colleagues alike. Whether she was teaching in the classroom or supporting our mission integration efforts, Sr. Joeline’s impact has been profound and far-reaching.
A note from Sr. Jo: “ ‘Enlivened by the Holy Spirit, we advocate Peace and Justice for the Common Good, in light of the Social Mission of the Church’ —Sisters of Social Service Mission Statement
This Mission Statement of the Sisters of Social Service is what motivates me to see “teaching the young and touching their lives” as more than a profession but as a mission. For many years now I have taught about the role of the Holy Spirit and the gifts that She bestows on all. Today, and for the past six decades I have needed Her to give me Courage, and Wisdom to be the person I am meant to be. And I want this for all that I come in contact with, Faculty, Staff, Students and their Parents. Half of my professed life has been here at Providence. Every day of those years I have come to school, happy, and excited to be a part of the Mission and Vision of the Sisters of Providence. We live the same Mission and speak the same language: Love for God, Love for Others, and Hope for a just and peaceful world.” —Sr. Joeline Santiago
The legacy and spirit of those that have come before us live on and are proudly represented through different aspects of campus life. We honor our Sisters of Providence and remind us of our mission— to serve all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable— and our values of compassion, dignity, justice, excellence, and integrity.
Blessed Emilie Tavernier Gamelin embodies the spirit of service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the poor and vulnerable, which serves as the cornerstone of our school’s identity. Similarly, Mother Joseph, an adventurous sister, journeyed to the Pacific Northwest and established the region’s first schools and hospitals. Her pioneering spirit and dedication to education continue to inspire us today. Sister Rebecca Berghoff, a teacher and Principal during the 1960s and 1970s when we were still an allgirls school, was a trailblazer in her own right. She guided our school through times of change with remarkable strength and grace. Then there was Sister Lucille Dean, another legendary Principal who played a crucial role in saving our school in the late 1980s; her leadership, wisdom, and vision ensured that Providence High School would not only survive but thrive for generations to come.
Lastly, Sister Mary Hawkins served as Assistant Principal under Sister Lucille and remained a dedicated member of our Board of Regents until her passing last summer. Her unwavering commitment to our school and tireless work behind the scenes have left an indelible mark on all of us.

Celebrating our heritage, Inspiring our future.
In April, we held our 70th Anniversary Gala to celebrate a milestone in Providence High School’s history.
Remarks from our Head of School
“Seventy years ago, the Sisters of Providence had a radical vision: to form young people into leaders who would serve with humility, act with courage, and live with integrity. They didn’t just build a school—they built a legacy.
And now, that legacy calls us forward.
Today’s world is complex—fast-moving, tech-driven, and often deeply divided. Artificial intelligence and automation are transforming how we work, learn, and live. But the qualities that make great leaders—empathy, ethical decision-making, emotional intelligence, cultural competence—those can’t be outsourced to machines.
The future needs leaders who are deeply human. And that’s what Providence is about.” —Head of School, Scott McLarty
Over 300 guests gathered at the Vibiana in Los Angeles. Current parents, board members, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff, and longtime friends and supporters of Providence High School enjoyed an unforgettable night celebrating our legacy, mission, and future. We honored 17 Sisters of Providence, three of whom are Providence alums. Without our Sisters’ leadership, Providence would not have opened its doors 70 years ago. Our community would not have survived crisis. But here we are, still standing on their shoulders, stronger than ever.
As we commemorate our 70th year, we are thrilled to unveil a series of celebratory events and initiatives that honor our rich history while looking forward to the future. This anniversary is not just a reflection of our past; it’s a launchpad for empowering the next generation of leaders. Here’s a sneak preview of what we have planned:
At the 70th Anniversary Gala, we launched the Providence Leadership Fund in honor of Sr. Lucille Dean. The goal of this fund is to power real, handson leadership experiences: immersive programming, courses, faculty development, retreats, and more. Sr. Lucille believed in bold action, she always wanted results.
Throughout the year, we will shine a spotlight on remarkable leaders within our community. Their stories and contributions will inspire current students and alumni alike, reminding us all of the incredible impact that dedicated individuals can have.
We will be hosting an all-alumni Oktoberfest gathering. This event will be a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with old friends, share memories, and enjoy a night filled with food, fun, and festivities!
Mark your calendars for an exciting Homecoming at the start of 2026, featuring a thrilling family fun zone and an alumni beer garden. We encourage everyone to come together to celebrate school spirit, rekindle friendships, and welcome back former classmates. Plus, we’re excited to reignite an old rivalry with Oakwood!
Providence Party, a joyous event opening its doors to current parents and guardians, alumni, and friends of Providence. Together, we will celebrate the legacy of our school and the vibrant community that has flourished over the last 70 years. This gathering promises to be a fantastic occasion to connect, network, and reminisce.
To cap off our anniversary celebrations, we will hold a special alumni reunion in the spring. This gathering promises to be a memorable occasion filled with nostalgia, laughter, and shared experiences as we celebrate the bonds that have been formed over the decades.
As we look back on 70 years of excellence, we also look forward to a vibrant future powered by leadership, community, and connection. We can’t wait to celebrate with all of you! Stay tuned for more details on each of these exciting events!
The Heritage Library was a huge hit at the 70th Anniversary Gala. The Library showcased artifacts from our 70 year history, inlcuding uniforms, class rings, photos, and more. Guest lingered over the yearbooks and were able to read through The Chronicles. The Library reminded us of the generations of people and experiences that shaped the school we love today.
This February, we were thrilled to host our Homecoming celebration, a much-anticipated event that brought our community together in a time of gratitude and joy. Originally scheduled for earlier in the year, the event had to be rescheduled due to the California fires. Nonetheless, we were immensely grateful to still come together and celebrate the spirit of our school and the bonds that unite us.
Our Homecoming festivities kicked off in the Family Fun Zone where future, current, and past Pioneers enjoyed a variety of carnival games, bounced around in inflatables, and took their chances at the dunk tank. Inside the gymnasium, the energy was just as high as our girls’ volleyball team faced off against a group of alumni. The main event was our boys’ volleyball team who competed against Trinity Classical Academy.
Our Homecoming celebration was a beautiful reminder of the strength and connection within our community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and made this day unforgettable. Despite the challenges faced earlier in the year, we emerged stronger and even more united, showcasing the true spirit of our Pioneer family.
This year’s May Crowning Mass marked the launch of the Golden Pioneer Society, with the Class of 1975 becoming its inaugural members as they celebrated their 50th reunion. This new tradition honors alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago – Pioneers whose experiences have paved the way for generations to come. A heartfelt thank you to our alumnae guests who helped make the celebration so meaningful: Sunny Arford ‘61, Jenny K. Griffin ‘63, Virginia Leonard ‘63, Evelyn Chaidez ‘69, Karen G. Hearn-Abbott ‘72, Ann Holmquist ‘75, Rosemarie Joyner ‘75, Michelle Goffin Godfrey ‘75, and Judy Umeck ‘75.
In May, we welcomed graduates from the 1960s through the 2000s back to campus for our first-ever Alumni Reunion, and it was a night to remember! Pioneers reconnected with classmates, shared stories across generations, and caught up with beloved faculty like Sr. Jo Santiago, Mr. Dennis Bullock (‘88), and Ms. Annie Matthews (‘93), our current school principal. The evening was full of laughter, conversation, and a true celebration of what it means to be part of the Providence family.
A special highlight of the evening was a guided campus tour led by Scott McLarty, Head of School, which brought back fond memories and sparked meaningful conversations as alumni revisited familiar hallways and saw what’s new on campus. He shared exciting updates and stories that bridged the school’s proud history with its vibrant present.
Thanks to your support, our second annual Alumni Giving Challenge was a great success! Gifts came in from across the decades – and the competition came down to the wire!
The Challenge ended in a tie, so we turned to our official tiebreakers:
• The class with the most individual donors, and
• The class with the largest collective gift total.
Congratulations to the Class of 1975, winner of the firstever Alumni Cup! Your Pioneer pride and generosity led the way, and we’re so grateful.
We also want to recognize our daily challenge and raffle prize winners: Joy Anne Glassmire Pierce ‘81, Barbara Palumbo Poer ‘59, Linda McHorney Chavez ‘69, Beatrice Riley ‘88, Amanda Santos ‘11, and Apple Watch Raffle Winner, Christy Futernick ‘88.
Thank you to everyone who gave! Your generosity strengthens Providence and supports the students who walk the halls today.

In her new role, she will oversee CNN’s weekend midday coverage and lead a team of producers and writers in Atlanta, focusing on a diverse range of topics from politics and global affairs to sports and human interest stories. While she is extremely grateful for the opportunity and excited for the future, Heather acknowledges that she would not be in this position without the love and support of her family, as well as the talent of her anchor and newsroom team. It is undoubtedly a surreal and humbling moment for her. She expresses her gratitude to everyone who has supported and believed in this storytelling girl from Burbank. (And yes, she admits that she convinced her very patient husband to take this photo.)

Following his graduation, Anthony worked for a personal injury and immigration law firm for three years. During his time assisting clients in immigration law, he realized his calling was to help those without a voice and advocate for those in need. In 2022, he was accepted at the University of La Verne College of Law. While there, Anthony participated in the mock trial team, the Justice & Immigration Clinic, and served as the 1L Representative, Historian, Secretary, and Vice President of the Student Bar Association. Currently, he works for a plaintiff’s law firm representing tenants in disputes with their landlords. As of 2025, he will be graduating in May and intends to sit for the California Bar Examination in July. Although his journey has been challenging, his perseverance has never wavered. Anthony truly believes that Providence prepared him for his current position, and his pride in his alma mater will never falter.

Sister Renate Hayum, S.P. Endowed Sisters of Providence – St. Anne Local Community
Sr. Mary Hawkins, SP
We are saddened to share that beloved alumna, community figure, and one of our very own Sisters, Sr. Barbara Schamber, SP passed away in her Olympia, Washington home on March 23, 2025.
Sr. Barbara was a student at Providence High School, graduating as part of the Class of 1961. She received her undergraduate education from the College of Sister Formation at Seattle University and then went on to complete a master’s degree at Central Washington University before embarking on several ministries in teaching and administration across the states of Washington, Oregon, and California. Sr. Barbara later served as the Provincial Superior of Sacred Heart Province from 1985-1991, and Mother Joseph Province from 2000-2004 and most recently again in
2020-2024. In addition to her work with the Sisters of Providence, she served on the Providence Health System Board of Directors as well as one of the first Sponsors of Providence Ministries from 2010-2019.
Sr. Barbara’s legacy is defined by her commitment to the poor and vulnerable, providing quality health and education with justice and compassion. Just this past August 2024, Sr. Barbara published her labor of love in the form of a book, Gifts of Water and Mountain. Her book tells the challenging history of the first 150 years of the Sisters of Providence in the American West 18562006. Her book is available to purchase with proceeds from sales benefiting the Sisters of Providence.
Eternal rest granted unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Please keep the recently departed loved ones and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
