a message from our
HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Providence Community, In this time of constant flux and change, I am filled with gratitude for the generosity and constancy of our Providence High School community. A Providence education, rooted in the mission and charism of the Sisters and calling each of us to be “expressions of God’s healing love,” is more valuable and relevant than ever. Whether you graduated in the Pioneer class of 1959 or are a recent graduate, I hope you still feel and appreciate your Providence experience. With over 6,000 living alumni, I know that Providence is having a positive impact on our world through your lives. The recent passing of Sr. Lucille Dean, SP (Sr. Assunta Marie) provides an opportunity to reflect on that impact. We still feel hers here on campus and hope you will consider donating in her memory to support the new Sister Lucille SP Memorial Fund. More information will be shared about this fund in the months ahead, but it is being developed to ensure that Sr. Lucille’s legacy remains alive and well in the coming decades. I hope you enjoy this edition of Vista and that it reinforces your pride in being a Pioneer. Yours in Providence,
Scott McLarty

CINEMA ARTS
The Cinema Arts Focus Program students have been busy this year. Adriano Roy ‘22 and Gunnar Sizemore ‘23 wrote and directed a short film, “BLAKE,” which was awarded as the winner of the LA Channel 35 & Secret Movie Club Short Film Festival. The film was shot from script to screen in four days and was scored by Marc Mangabat ‘22. Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut and his wife Lydia Hurlbut, who also run an online film-making platform called Filmmakers Academy, donated $75,000 worth of film equipment to the program. In addition to the film equipment, the Cinema Arts lab has been equipped with brand new EVGA RTX FTW3 Ultra Graphic Cards. To wrap up the academic year, the program held a Cinema Arts Showcase on May 22 at AMC Burbank 16. It was a celebration of our Cinema Arts Focus Program student films as they were shared on the big screen.
TECHNOLOGY
The Technology Focus Program welcomed new TFP Director, Dr. Fatima Nicdao, this academic year. Dr. Nicdao has revamped the program by incorporating social justice and problem solving into the understanding of technology. The 9th grade Game Programming students learned about the fundamentals of JavaScript and coding. The 10th grade Robotics students were very active with the 3D Printers, Boss Laser, and X Carve. The 11th grade AP Computer Science Principles students prepared for their AP Exam and also worked on their Create Performance Task project. The 12th grade Marketing Foundations students earned their Google certificate for Digital Marketing. On April 25, Dr. Nicdao held a Learning Symposium where students from each grade level were able to showcase what they have learned throughout the year. Schuyler Henry ‘23 and Christofer Sanrow ‘23 designed a game called “Arden’s Signal”. This game was created on UNITY using C++ code. It is a “choose your adventure” decision based puzzle game that puts the player in control.

MEDICAL
Even though the Medical Focus Program students have not been able to visit Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, they have been very active in the classroom and community. Dr. Arjan Harjani incorporated Institute for Systems Biology teaching modules into his 12th grade level genetics curriculum. At the beginning of the year, the Medical Focus students represented Providence Health at the Mass for Healthcare Professionals at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. In November, Madeline Fernandez ‘24, helped connect our Providence community to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation where she and 62 other Pioneers participated in a walk to raise awareness for JDRF. Sofia Estrada ‘25, became the first freshman to acquire a position at the Providence Tarzana Medical Center. Next year, Dr. Harjani hopes to connect the Medical Focus Program to the Nursing Program at St. Joseph’s. This will give students in the program direct experience in a hospital setting.

The Providence Performing Arts Department welcomed two new members to their team; Mr. Sebastian Johnson, Choreographer, and Ms. Annie Terry, Theatre Operations Specialist. In addition, Ms. Julianne Kusmierczyk was brought on as a fulltime performing arts faculty member. Mr. Johnson has helped choreograph multiple student performances in this year’s Broadway Revue and Choir Arts Finale. Ms. Terry took lead in forming the Blackout Brigade, a brand new club that is responsible for all of the technical aspects of productions, as well as setups for masses and other big events, such as Theme Night. Ms. Kusmierczyk has played an integral role in this year’s production season, directing As You Like, co-directing 1Take, and choreographing the sold-out production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Performing Arts Department Chair & Choral Director, Ms. Marisa Bradfield, and Collaborative Pianist, Mr. Tracy Stroh, have led the Providence Singers, Providence’s advanced ensemble, to new heights. The Providence Singers competed in the Advanced Ensemble Classification at the Southern California Vocal Choral Association Festival where they received a perfect score. This past March, the Providence Singers were invited to perform at the Choirs of America, Top Nationals Convergence Concert held at Carnegie Hall. Not only did they perform with prestigious choral ensembles from around the country, but they also had the opportunity to have a spotlight performance on this worldfamous stage.

At Providence, we continuously strive to integrate our core mission and values into our Christian Service Program, led by Ms. Janet Fontaine. In the Fall, our Pioneers participated in five charity walks; Shane’s Inspiration - Run, Walk, and Roll, ABDR Walk of Life for the Armenian Bone Marrow Registry, Club 21 - Together is Better Walk, Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and the JDRF One Walk to End Type 1 Diabetes. Each event was heavily attended by our Pioneer students, faculty, and staff members. Shane’s Inspiration - Run, Walk, and Roll event was the first event of the year. We had two Pioneers place in the running competition. Henry Virtue ‘25 placed first and Aubrey Eaton ‘25 placed second. Our Pioneers raised $1,305 for Shane’s Inspiration. For the JDRF One Walk, Maddie Fernandez ‘24 and Charlie Wehrenberg ‘23 both led teams who raised an estimated $125,000 for JDRF. When interviewed about the walk, Maddie commented, “It’s less about the attention and more about helping find a cure and bringing more awareness towards a disease that gets very little recognition, yet it affects so many lives.”

equity and social justice task force
VISION & INITIATIVES The Equity and Social Justice Task Force seeks to foster a supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students in exploring their racial identity and identifying personal roles in implementing a more equitable and inclusive school community and society. This year, ESJ has been extremely active in our community. The task force started hosting listening sessions and student town halls, where our student population could gather and their voices could be heard. This is an initiative that ESJ plans on building on in the upcoming school year. Next school year, all students will be reading This Book is Anti-Racist by Tiffany Jewell, which will allow our school community to explore their racial identity and help identify personal roles in society to influence change. The goal is to influence change within our campus in hopes of it trickling down to the greater community. This book will support Providence High School’s mission of being a more inclusive and antiracist school. Not only will students be reading the book, our faculty and staff members, along with our parents and guardians will be invited to read along during ESJ’s Summer Book Club.
equity and social justice task force
SUBCOMMITTEES DID YOU KNOW?
There are four committees that operate within the ESJ Task Force. This was implemented during the 2021-2022 school year so that the ESJ Task Force as a whole can operate more effectively. The Diversity of Curriculum committee, led by Ms. Marisa Bradfield, fosters an academic and collaborative environment, which assists in the planning and mapping of curriculum. The Student Led Organizations committee, led by Ms. Allyssa Moscotte, provides resources, tools, and mentorship for Student Led Organization moderators and leaders. The Policy, Procedures, & Training committee, led by Mrs. Maribel Kuklish, reviews all policies, procedures, and protocols through an equity lens. In addition, the sub task force provides ongoing training for all faculty and staff, as well as a more in-depth interview process for new hires. The Programming & Events committee, led by Mr. Joshua Freeman, collaborates with ASB and Marketing & Communications on interfaith holidays. 12 | Vista 2022
wellness task force

VISION & INITIATIVES
STUDENT LED ORGANIZATIONS
The Wellness Task Force was created to understand the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of our students, faculty, and staff members at a deeper level. This year, our Student Led Organization, Well-Aware has been at the forefront of not only understanding those needs, but also taking action to support the wellness of our Providence community. Well-Aware is led by Dominic Brown ‘22 and moderated by Ms. Shanica Dale and Mrs. Allison Castro ‘02. The SLO has been very active in promoting mental health on campus as they have facilitated “WellAware” sessions that consisted of activities and mini-lessons that our faculty advisors can do to help promote wellness. The SLO has also hosted various listening sessions, called Courageous Conversations, where students, faculty, and staff members are welcomed to join together in conversation about certain topics, such as mental health of LGBTQIA+ youth. We believe that creating a safe space and having conversations like these are necessary to fostering an environment of acceptance and inclusion.
Student Led Organizations are groups within Providence High School that advocate for, protect, and/or represent members of our student community. These organizations differ from a typical club because they are reflections of social identities and personal autonomy. Providence currently has eight SLOs; Asian American and Pacific Islander Club, Association of Latin American Studies, Black Student Union, Kehillah, Prism, Providence HYE, Red Whistle Club, and Well Aware. These SLOs are called to be proactive by educating our community, whether it is through sharing and celebrating culture, addressing an issue, or by advocating for a cause.
environmental sustainability task force
VISION & INITIATIVES The Environmental Sustainability Task Force, led by Ms. Rebecca Poliner, has been called to discern the most effective ways of supporting environmentally sustainable practices. This year, the task force, in collaboration with Ms. Poliner’s Nutrition Science students, piloted a composting program in an effort to minimize organic waste on campus. Recently, Ms. Poliner took the Juniors in her Nutrition Science class to Griffith Park to work with LA Compost. The trip allowed the students to understand the impact of composting on a larger scale. Next year, the task force plans on expanding on the efforts made this year by partnering with the Burbank Recycling Center to sort our waste into trash, recycling, and organics. Another goal for the upcoming year is to have a Sharing Table. A Sharing Table will allow students to give up untouched food items so that other students are able to take. This initiative will help limit the amount of food thrown away and will also foster awareness and community building. Vista 2022 | 13

The plan’s guiding principles - impact, health, TEF Design is an architecture and interior design and play - reflect the priorities of the Sisters of firm located in San Francisco. TEF Design prides Providence (impact through service), our unique themselves on achieving extraordinary results relationship with the Providence health system through authentic collaboration. They seek (health as the foundation for life) and the needs modern, economic, and responsible solutions of young people today (play as a source of that are optimistic, open, and warm. THE MASTER PLAN
After a thorough vetting process led by the Master Plan Committee of the Board of Regents, Providence High School partnered with TEF Design in Spring 2021. The Master Plan represents the culmination of a lengthy collaborative process that involved Providence students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, the Board of Regents, and the Sisters of Providence. It articulates a twenty

conducive to the success of our school community, we will be strengthening our commitment to faith, excellence, and service,” said Alumni Coordinator, Mrs. Sheridan Vititoe ‘12.
TEF has been very active in the Providence community as they assessed current and future needs and gathered feedback regarding campus spaces from alumni, alumni parents and guardians, current parents and guardians, faculty and staff members, students, and current and former regents. Representatives from those groups were invited to participate in workshops and walkshops where they shared their thoughts about our Providence campus. The feedback from our community members, as well as the needs of future Pioneers, drove the Master Plan forward as TEF identified possible courses of action and vetted them through the Master Plan Committee. “All of this work is rooted in the mission of the school and the call of the Sisters to respond to the needs in front of us, especially the needs of our students,” said Head of School, Mr. Scott McLarty. In March 2022, TEF hosted multiple sessions to showcase the progress made with the Master Plan. The community meetings were open to all and the feedback will be used by the Master Plan Committee of the Board of Regents to help determine how the Master Plan will be phased in the years ahead.
Safety and security are top priorities of all school communities and significant improvements have been made to secure our campus since 2020. One remaining concern is that our current campus is divided into three areas, all separated by a public access road. The Master Plan proposes a solution that will flip the orientation of the campus so that the entrance on Buena Vista Street is closed off and the new entrance will be facing Johnny Carson Park. By allowing our campus to be unified with a single perimeter, this plan will increase safety, security, and efficiency while making better use of campus space. Our current campus, beautiful and well-kept, no longer has enough space (indoor and outdoor) to meet the needs of students. The proposed Master Plan expands our square footage from 76,000 to 109,000, with a total of five labs, 23 general classrooms, additions to ensure universal access to all of campus, more soft-scape and flexible furniture in the quad, more green space across campus, a redesigned chapel moved to the proposed new front of campus, a Student Impact Center inside a new Commons building, an indoor-outdoor amphitheater with updated lighting and equipment, a new arts building and theater, and a full perimeter wall that will block outside sound.

ACCREDITATION Every six years Providence High School goes through an accreditation process. The accreditation process is a self-reflective study to see where we have been, how far we have come, and to see if we are taking the right steps to get to where we want to go. Providence High School does this process through the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). This year, Ms. Kerry Martin, Dean of Curriculum, has been taking lead on the study. It is a year-long process that will conclude in December of 2022. Our faculty and staff members are divided into into the following committees: 1) Mission, 2) Educational Program, 3) Student Learning Experience, 4) Faculty and Pedagogy, 5) Climate and Community, 6) Admission and Enrollment, 7) Finance, 8) Advancement, 9) Human Resources, 10) Facilities, 11) Health, Safety and Wellness, 12) Governance, 13) Administration, and 14) Self-Assessment, Decision Making and Change. Breaking into committees allows our faculty and staff members to have philosophical conversations in smaller groups so that they can decide what is important to bring to the community as a whole. When commenting on the accreditation process, Ms. Martin mentioned how “we have always been a school that will have conversations and always look for ways to improve.” With this year’s accreditation, our goal is to set the tone for the future of Providence. At the end of 2022, CAIS will be sending over representatives to go over the report and will look into every aspect of the school’s programs and operations to assess its effectiveness in fulfilling the school’s stated purposes. Even though the study is completed internally, Ms. Martin said, “There are always ways for our outside community to get involved, whether it is participating in surveys or sharing your voice at a town hall.”

BRANDING INITIATIVE What is DISTINC_? Distinc_ is more than a branding firm. Everything DISTINC_ does focuses on the needs and dreams of real people. DISTINC_ engages their clients in an immersive journey that pulls out leadership qualities from everyone — everyone plays a role. They empower people within their organizations to leverage their collective intelligence and develop more participatory, potent, and compelling brands. In March of 2021, Providence High School partnered with DISTINC_ to clarify our vision for the future and find new ways of expressing who we are as a learning community to the wider world. The goal was to align our internal values and external perceptions because our brand is not only what we say it is, but what they say it is. Providence High School has a prolific history of evolution from the founding year of 1955 to now. Our Providence green has consistenly changed throughout the years to what it is today, but our values and tradtitions stayed true. Our new brand initiative is an invitation designed to help us start and sustain more authentic conversations with prospective families about who we are as people of Providence. “We want to honor the history and tradition of Providence High School, but not be bound by it. We want to seek ‘today’ in words and imagery what the Sisters of Providence have been seeking for almost 180 years,” said Mr. Scott McLarty.

WE ARE PIONEERS
Meet Grant Ishkhanian ‘23. He is a rising senior at Providence High School and will be the ASB President for the 2022-2023 academic year. Grant is a member of the Golf team and Mock Trial team. He loves attending sporting events and loves giving his time to others in need. He runs a small business selling sports memorabilia. He showed our Providence community that he is truly a man of action. As part of his campaign promises, Grant had pledged to shave his head if he won. Once that came to fruition, he approached the Development Department for advice about how he could leverage his promise so that it benefited a cancer charity. “Grant is the personification of our commitment to being of service and having a positive impact in the world,” says Mrs. Anja Kloch, Director of Development. “We worked with Grant and decided to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research in the world. Not only did Grant shave his head, but he inspired others around him to join the cause and in the end, we were able to donate $2,000 to help end childhood cancers. Grant is a natural leader with an incredibly generous

heart. I look forward to working with him to bring more of his vision to life during the 2022-23 school year.” Q: What is your favorite thing about Providence so far? Grant: I love the community at Providence. The staff and my fellow classmates are so good to me. I couldn’t have asked for a better environment. Everyone is so kind. Q: What made you want to run for ASB President? Grant: From the time I got to Providence, I knew I wanted to become the president of the school. My time on ASB working under Benjamin Caloza ‘21 and Zachary Ching ‘22 have shown me how a good leader operates. My goal as ASB President is to inspire change amongst our school. I also want to provide perspective amongst us all. I believe that I have much room to grow as a leader and as a follower. One thing I know for sure is the environment of Providence High School is going to make this experience a whole lot easier. Q: What are some of your goals for the next year? after Providence? Grant: One goal I have for next year, as cliche as it sounds, is to make the 20222023 school year very memorable. I have so many ideas to spread to my class and am always open to new ideas as well. In my final year at Providence and the years following that, I would love to give back even more to my community. I just completed a service project at the kids community Dental Clinic in Burbank, in which I led a team of volunteers in creating a beautiful mural in the X-Ray room. I would love to do more projects similar to that. Q: What/Who inspires you? Grant: My mother inspires me. She has taught me so many valuable life skills and I credit any success I have to her. She has led me with the best intentions my whole life and I am so thankful for that.
WE ARE PIONEERS Ivanna Shakh, ‘10 A Letter to My Alma Mater “I graduated Providence High in 2010. At the time of my graduation, I was uncertain of my future career path and of what profession I wanted to pursue. However, there was one thing that I was very much certain of, my love of history. At the time, I did not know that studying history would inspire me to do the work that I am doing today – practicing law. While still an undergraduate student at Loyola Marymount University, I was pondering my next steps and what type of profession I should pursue. The answer became evident when I was able to participate in a class called History of Medieval Law. Besides learning the nuances of medieval conflict resolutions, I also learned the importance of law in a society. Consequently, I decided to study law, and today, after graduating Loyola Law School, I am a practicing attorney representing victims of childhood sexual abuse. Looking back, every step of the way I see the guidance of a divine providence that led me to where I am today. Providence High School was a significant part of that journey for me. This is where I met individuals that inspired me to dream, to work hard, to be dedicated – individuals that believed in me when I doubted myself. To this day, I cherish memories of being a high school student. At Providence we got to build rockets and imagine ourselves as NASA engineers; we got to go back in time and learn about the complexities and beauty of the past; we were able to learn about the major religions of the world; we were able to dive into the vibrant world of literature. Furthermore, as Providence students, we were reminded always to be caring and respectful of others, to be of service to others, to have courage, to overcome adversities, and to always strive to exercise our full potential. Looking back now, I understand that being part of the Providence community has been an important part of my journey. How the education, support, mentorship provided at Providence High enriched me as an individual and allowed me to continue my journey pursuing further education, overcoming challenges and achieving accomplishments. Whenever I am asked what high school I attended, it is always with fondness and pride that I respond – Providence.”

a message from our
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT “As I heard the cheers, shrieks, screams, and gasps from the Student Activity Center during the last day of Spirit Week, I thought – wow! – like for real WOW! I get to be a small part of creating this space for these amazing humans. A space where we go above and beyond to KNOW them, to help them realize their unique gifts and potential and to empower them to be active creators of who they will be as adults.” As we close out this school year (and this chapter in history but I am not going to speak the C-word), I remain in awe that all of us in the Development Department get the opportunity to be part of this community and mission. When a student comes over to the Advancement Office to share a success or breakthrough, we all celebrate. We are not their teachers or counselors, but we are all their champions and advocates, and we will continue to do all that we can to provide for the overall health of this community. To that end we have done a lot in 2021-22! From our monthly Providence Pub Nights to our farewell (until 2026) Gala, we hosted or supported over 20 events with a determination to rebuild the sense of camaraderie and community that had stalled in the last few years. We supported our two parent volunteer groups, the Mothers’ Guild and the Parent Board, as they also worked to redefine and augment their support of the school and students. We continued to expand our alumni relations program by adding a closed social network called Graduway that I can best describe as a mash up between Facebook and LinkedIn. This new platform will allow us to share content that is relevant to alumni based on where they are in life while offering access to mentors and other professional opportunities – generations of Pioneers coming together to support each other! 22 | Vista 2022
We saw growth in our fundraising efforts through more parents giving to the Providence Fund, to the largest amount raised at a Gala in recent years, to being invited to apply to a local foundation for the largest non-capital grant ever (fingers crossed!), to being awarded enhancement funding from the State and more. At the core of our fundraising work is the commitment to “ease the way” of all our Pioneers, whether that means providing financial assistance for tuition, support to cover uniform costs, new lunch tables in the quad or enhanced equipment and materials – we are here to remove any obstacles that get in their way as they explore who they are, how they want to be of service to the world and what’s after Providence. My profound thanks to all our parent volunteers, our donors, my colleagues and to our students who give me energy every day. A special thanks to the members of the development team – Susan Yee, Assistant Director, Erin Griffith, Assistant Director, Sheridan Vititoe, Alumni Coordinator and Lisa Mallory, Development Coordinator. You four are nothing short of incredible and the commitment you bring to each other, and the mission is amazing. I am so grateful to work alongside each one of you. As I concluded last year’s letter, please remember I am here to chat anytime about ideas, concerns, or celebrations. Enjoy your summer!

Our art teacher, Sister Felma taught me to focus and put meaning behind everything, and to pay attention to the small details, because it makes a difference in the bigger picture; something which I still apply to my work. There was also a Career Day my Junior year at PHS. I did not have a clear vision of what I wanted to do, but that Career Day, my classmate’s mom came to talk about her role at Warner Bros. She told us she was a Graphic Designer. I had no idea what that was, but I was always interested in art. She spoke about all the things she does as a designer, which I loved! Because of that one Career Day at PHS, I was able to convince my parents what I wanted to do and pursue this career and life. PHS definitely shaped my trajectory and who I am now.”

NEWS & UPDATES Aram Namavar ‘09 - “I am currently in my final year of residency training in Internal Medicine at UC San Diego. In July 2022, I will be joining the team at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as an attending physician in Hospital Medicine. In this role, I provide acute medical care exclusively to hospitalized patients while coordinating care amongst an interdisciplinary team. PHS shaped my trajectory by cultivating my critical thinking skills early on and helping to equip me with the work ethic necessary to navigate this rigorous path in medicine. I am thankful to Dr. Harjani, Ms. Kuklish, and Mr. Bullock for their support of my time at PHS and to this day as they helped instill in me the intangible skills to become a physician.”

PROVIDENCE HIGH CONNECT
SHERIDAN VITITOE ‘12
In February 2022, we unveiled our newest alumni engagement tool, Graduway: Providence High Connect. Providence High Connect is an exclusive portal for alums to reunite with classmates, leverage their professional network, and stay involved with the PHS community!
Sheridan Vititoe is overjoyed to serve the Providence High School community as Alumni Coordinator! As a Providence alum, Class of ‘12, she understands the pride of being a PHS graduate and strives to bring that enthusiasm to this role. Following her high school tenure at Providence, Sheridan obtained her B.A. in Communications with a Nonprofit emphasis from CSU: Channel Islands located in Camarillo, CA. After her collegiate career, she joined the esteemed Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as Membership Services Coordinator.
On the site, members are invited to customize their profiles, create posts, join class groups, share photos, and more. Additionally, Providence High Connect provides alums with the opportunity to act as a mentor to younger alumni as they navigate college life and career exploration. Whether you’re searching for networking opportunities or just looking to socialize with fellow Pioneers, we hope you will use this platform to your benefit. We look forward to seeing you all on Providence High Connect!
While Walk of Fame star ceremonies and glitzy events were wonderful perks of the job, her fulfillment derived from the relationships forged with those she served. In 2019, Sheridan joined a start-up specializing in shared workplace solutions. She continued to hone her skills for membership, retention, and community relations. In 2021, she heeded the call to return to her PHS home. In 2021, she heeded the call to return to her PHS home. A decade later and Sheridan continues to find that Providence always provides.

PROVIDENCE GALA
and experiences - ranging from a handmade guitar and amp (courtesy of StewMac) to a trip to Mexico! The highlight of the silent auction was a premier parking spot in front of the school that went for $4,250 to our own beloved employee, Lisa Mallory! And she would like you to all know that it is useless to fight her for it. For our PHS COVID relief financial assistance, our paddle raise profited $41,400! This to date is the most we have ever raised in a single paddle raise effort at PHS! Special thanks and appreciation to Dominic Mongelli ‘22 for sharing his compelling story with the guests. Dominic reminded us all that Providence is truly a place where everyone belongs. If you didn’t get a chance to participate or attend the Gala, you can still make a gift to support our PHS Covid relief fund at www.providencehigh.org/development/giving
This year’s Gala was themed, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”, and we sure did! Providence’s annual Gala was held on Saturday, April 9th at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake, California. Over 200 guests attended this year’s event, including the Sisters of Providence, faculty and new incoming parents for the 2022-2023 school year. This was the first “in person” Gala since 2019 so there was more laughing, hugging and all-around joyous celebration than previous years! So much so that there was only time to dance to 2 songs! To highlight our 66th year a signature drink was made, “The Pioneer Chrome Fender”. Drinks were paired with a lovely jazz ensemble including our spectacular Ms. Marisa Bradfield. She was accompanied by the talented Sasha Camacho ‘23 and Kylie Arteaga ‘23 who entertained us with over an hour of jazz favorites.
A special Thank you to this year’s sponsors: Platinum sponsor - Providence Health System; Gold sponsors - Sisters of Providence and Worthe Real Estate; Silver sponsors - Angelique Campen and The Walt Disney Company. Table sponsors - GAIN Federal Credit Union, the Goetzman family (aluma ’76), the Reif-Kasper Family (alumna ’76), and Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. Individual sponsors included Dr. Christina Ashjian, Master Cooling, Mayfield Junior School, the Lustig and O’Connor Family and the Najarian Family. We literally could not have had this event happen without the generosity of our sponsors. Special thanks to our parent volunteers, Cecelia Loschin, Candace Thornton, Christina Sanchez ‘95, who worked into the late hours to decorate our location, set up and decorate auction baskets and haul enormous amounts of supplies for a flawless GALA! The wonderful and talented Karen Shoemaker who designed our invitations, table numbers and marketing pamphlets. There should be a parade for you wonderful parents!
Providence’s own players performed an energetic scene from this year’s production of Beauty and The Beast. Thank you to Ms. Julianne Kusmierczyk for the never-ending dedication to our performing arts department and student corralling. Let’s never take it for granted how hard Although we will not be having another Gala these teachers and students work all year! until 2026, the Development Department will be busy putting together a new year full of events Parents, alumni, and community businesses that will build our Providence High School and donated 60 baskets for our silent auction. Our all departments that make us great! Here’s to an live auction was a wild ride of 8 unique items amazing and challenging 2021-22, cheers! 30 | Vista 2022

in memory of
SR LUCILLE DEAN, SP Sister Lucille Marie Dean (Sister Assunta Marie), age 86, a Sister of Providence for 67 years, died February 18, 2022, at St. Joseph Residence, Seattle, Wash. Sister Lucille, second child of Walter and Agnes (Welsh) Dean, was born in Seattle, Wash. on March 19, 1935. Her family included five siblings and numerous foster children who were part of the bustling household. Sister Lucille first met the Sisters of Providence when she began second grade at St. Catherine School, Seattle, Wash. She felt privileged to have elementary schooling by the Sisters of Providence – the “happy Sisters.” Sister Lucille once said, “… the Sisters had a strong influence on me.” In 1954, shortly after high school, Sister Lucille entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Providence at Mount St. Vincent, Seattle, Wash., received first vows in 1955 and final vows in 1958. Her educational achievements included: a BA in Education and History from College of Great Falls (now University of Providence) in 1963; and an MA in Education/Curriculum and Instruction in 1971 from University of Oregon, Eugene, Ore. Sister Lucille was a woman of deep spirituality, vision, humility, patience, wisdom, collaboration and grace; anticipating what lies ahead and approaching it with courage and determination in ministries as a classroom teacher, a school administrator and in leadership roles. Her ministries as a classroom teacher and school administrator took her to Yakima (1957-58); Burbank (195557, 1959-60, 1964-67); Moxee (1960-62); and Anchorage (1962-64). She served as principal of St. Catherine Elementary School in Seattle (196772), which she attended as a child and then taught children of her former classmates, and Providence High School in Burbank (1986-2005). In her many leadership roles, Sister Lucille was Provincial Councilor (1975-78) and later Provincial Superior of Sacred Heart Providence (1979-85) of the Sisters of Providence; a member (2017-20) of the Board of Providence Health & Services and then served as Chair (2010-12); Interim President of University of Great Falls (2015-16); and as a member of numerous boards.

Sister Lucille was much loved and touched many lives. She was the recipient of numerous awards, such as Distinguished Alumnus from the University of Oregon (2001); “Burbank Woman of the Year” (2004); and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA-USA) (2018). Under her leadership and with the active collaboration of parents, Providence High School in Burbank began their Medical and Media (now Cinema) Focus Programs, the former in collaboration with Providence St. Joseph Medical Center (Burbank). Later, the school also added a Technology Focus Program as well. During her tenure, Providence High School in Burbank was also designated as a national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education (1998). Sister Lucille was rarely idle and leaves an enriching legacy. Throughout her life, and as a woman of faith, Sister Lucille always gave thanks for where Providence led her. Sister Lucille is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Tony. She is survived by her sisters Loretta (Rollin) Radwick; Pati (Ruben, deceased) Hoard; Mary Jo (Jerry) Sweeney; Diane Dean, and her brother Christopher (Nancy), many nieces and nephews, and by the Sisters in her community.
