Dear Friends of Providence High School,

T

his edition of Pioneer Connections once again focuses on the many successes and celebrations of our past school year. In my graduation welcome and address to the class of 2018, I spoke about how our most successful and revered teachers and students over the years at Providence High School have been the most adaptable. They have also most likely been innovative and creative, and of course, they are loving and caring, but most importantly, they have adapted to the changes in education and the world. Ms. Linda Wyatt, who we begin to celebrate in this issue, is a perfect example of a woman who expertly adapted to change over her 44 years here at Providence High School. Ms. Wyatt is a true Pioneer!

I am so proud of all of our graduates!

Sister Mary Hawkins, SP, Board of Regents member and former school administrator, says, “To belong to the Sisters of Providence is to become aware of the needs of our societies, to gain a sense of the many works of Providence and to feel a participation in all of these works in many areas of the world. To be charged with the mission of proclaiming Providence is a sacred trust. God loves each one of us, and for that blessing, I am most grateful. Providence of God, I thank you for all.” The lay leadership of Providence High School carries on this central mission today.

Secondly, we are a college prep school. I am very proud of the college matriculation of our seniors. The Class of 2018 is very impressive. The 118 graduates had an average GPA of 3.53. 92% of them were accepted into four-year universities, and 98% of them will be attending college in the fall (two will be joining the workforce). More than 20% of our seniors will be attending out of state colleges, and 26% of them are the first in their family to

Annual Gala Reaches All-Time High

P

rovidence’s annual Gala was held on Saturday, April 21st at Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank. This year’s event was attended by approximately 258 people - 44% of which were current and incoming PHS parents. Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and complimentary martinis while perusing the cocktail auction items, which were displayed in the beautiful garden overlooking the golf course, and actively participated in the first ever “Wine Grab.” After the auction closed, guests made their way inside for dinner and were treated to a performance by the cast members of the PHS musical, All Shook Up. A lively and generous paddle raise for tuition assistance and the live auction preceded dancing the rest of the evening away.

Digital Detox Quality, Leisure, and the Right to Act

F

ahrenheit 451 is a prescient science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury depicting a future in which books are illegal and the average citizen spends her days staring at wall-sized screens and wearing “seashell” earpieces as a passive consumer of a constant flow of vapid entertainment. One character describes how all information and entertainment has been diluted and shortened to soundbites and blurbs. A teenager in the book describes peers who only speak of their cars and their swimming pools, but don’t really say anything. When we studied this novel

in my 9th grade English class this year, many of the students were quick to pick up on the reflections of our current society, and recognize themselves, in Bradbury’s 1950s depiction of the nottoo-distant future. “Ms. Matthews,” they said, “That character Mildred, she’s like us and our earbuds.”

“Yes,” I agreed. “YES. But she’s not a very happy character, is she?”

I presented them an article from KQED Science, Teen Happiness

Plummeted After 2012. Here’s One Possible Reason Why…. The article discusses a study which analyzed the sharp decrease in psychological well-being (self-esteem, life satisfaction, and happiness) among teenagers after 2012, during the rise of the smartphone. The researchers discovered that teenagers who spent more time “on screens” than they did on other activities were generally unhappier, while those who indulged in just a little screen-time were happiest. To quote the article: “In other words, every activity that didn’t involve a screen was linked to more happiness, and every activity that involved a screen was linked to less happiness. The differences were considerable: Teens who spent more than five hours a day online were twice as likely to be unhappy as those who spent less than an hour a day.”

and put all electronic devices aside for the night at 8pm. For reflection and accountability, participants also had keep a regular journal and daily prompts were provided. I sent an email home to families, informing them about the Detox and encouraging them to support their child and maybe even participate. About 50 students initially expressed interest, and 34 brave souls actually accepted the challenge. They expressed real concern about the withdrawal, a few were doubtful they could succeed. To show his commitment, one kid deleted Snapchat from his phone in front of me, wincing as he did it.

So, what did they say?

• Nearly everyone said they spent more time talking to family and friends face-to-face (especially at the lunch tables and dinner tables), and most mentioned spending more time on activities like reading, drawing, playing sports, going outdoors, and cooking.

• Many mentioned feeling free of “the drama” that exists on social media, and of feeling “more like themselves,” “less anxious” and “being able to breathe.”

• Most of them said their sleep improved – they fell asleep faster and easier - and they felt more energized.

• Many realized that they feel a very real pressure to keep up “streaks” and monitor “likes” on social media, a pressure that they put on themselves.

• Nearly all of them realized they have more time than they think they do – they recognized that their devices cause them to procrastinate.

• While a couple of them admit they did the detox purely for the extra credit, the majority said they chose to do it because they really believe device addiction is a problem affecting their lives.

• At the end, most of them wrote that they hope to change some of their technology habits permanently – specifically using social media less, and generally spending less time on their devices.

Now, I am certainly not anti-technology. In fact, the other part of my job at PHS is Technology Integration Specialist, and I work with fellow teachers to help enhance our curriculum with digital tools. I require my students to use technology regularly. I am as addicted to my phone as my students are. So, in discussing the implications of Fahrenheit 451 and the findings of the article, the kids were a bit surprised. “Ms. Matthews,” one kid said, “You’re into technology, you like all this stuff. Don’t you think Ray Bradbury just sounds like a cranky old man who doesn’t understand technology and wants to blame it for everything?”

“No,” I disagreed. “Not quite. You’ll see what I mean, keep reading.

We haven’t gotten to Faber yet.”

In the second part of the novel, Faber is sought out by the main character, Montag, during an existential crisis about the emptiness of life and society. Montag begs Faber, a retired English professor, to help him understand what’s missing from his life and if perhaps the illegal books may give him the answers he’s seeking.

Faber tells Montag, “It’s not the books themselves. It’s what’s IN them.” He goes on to say that there are three things missing from society, three things inherent in books, and too often hindered by technology: quality, leisure, and the right to act. By quality, he means information and entertainment that “have texture,” show “the pores of life,” and require real active thought. Leisure is the time to process information, to think critically, to be discerning.

Finally, Faber says we need the freedom to be able to act on what we learn from the first two.

Faber was right. Too often what our kids are consuming through their devices is not quality – it’s artificial social media that damages their self-esteem. Too much of their leisure time is spent passively absorbing information and stimuli in the form of mindless blurbs without critical processing time to consider what they are taking in. Perhaps this experiment at least showed them they do have the right to act: that they have power over their devices, that they can choose quality over nonsense, that they can put their phone down every once in a while and think about what they’re being fed.

About this time, we had a major technological issue on campus that made basically all our technology unavailable for about two weeks.

As you can imagine, it was a significant practical inconvenience, but it was also weirdly good timing for the discussions taking place in my classroom. A couple of colleagues commented about how the students seemed somehow “mellower” when they couldn’t check their online gradebooks, when computers and wifi were taken out of the picture. This was also about halfway through Lent, a time of sacrifice, reflection and reconnection. I had an idea…

If even a few kids gained some insight to the link between mental health and technology use, I consider this experiment a success.

If they saw relevant connections between literature, the issues in the world around them, and their own personal experience, I consider it a bonus.

I presented my students with a challenge: a Digital Detox for the remainder of Lent. With a small amount of extra credit as an incentive, the challenge required students to completely abstain from social media, decrease TV and games to two hours per day,

PHS Choral Music Experiences Busy and Successful Year

horal Music had a very successful year at PHS. The students were more involved than ever with competitions, honor choirs, concerts, and community civic events.

These performance opportunities are extremely important in contributing to the overall experience in music making and are foundational components for well-rounded young people that will mature to be advocates for the arts. From the Broadway Revue in the fall to the High Arts Finale at the end of the school year, the performers learn so much about the process of creating and the essentials of teamwork.

Pioneer Connections

In the fall, all of Providence’s choral ensembles prepared for the Broadway Revue and the Annual Christmas Concert. The Men’s Ensemble received a special invitation to perform at the San Fernando Valley Barbershop Harmony Society Concert as well. In February, six students were selected to participate at the annual CAIS Southern Section Honors Music Festival, which took place at Viewpoint School. This year, Talia Patterson ‘18, Kimika Martinez ‘20, Anton Reyes ‘20, Sophie Collins ‘18, Stella Murphy ‘19, and Zack Pikhart ‘18 had the pleasure of singing under Rodger Guerrero, Director of Choral Studies at Pasadena City College, and

the students had the chance to meet other singers from Harvard Westlake, Buckley School, Viewpoint, and other CAIS affiliated schools.

Providence Singers received an invitation to perform at the National Festival of Gold at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois.

Our students were able to hear ensembles from around the world and take in the sights of this beautiful city! They performed tremendously well and will remember this tour for decades to come. Several weeks later, Providence Singers concluded their competition season with a performance at the Verdugo Hills Glendale a Cappella Festival. PHS was the only private Catholic high school represented at the event. Out of fourteen public high schools, PHS came in third place next to John Burroughs High School and Valencia High School.

The PHS choral ensembles performed in numerous music festivals and competitions throughout the year. Les Dames began their festival season with a performance at the Southern California Vocal Association (SCVA) Festival where they received a rating of Superior. Pioneer Chorus, Women’s Ensemble, and Men’s Ensemble competed in their specified divisions at the Music in the Parks Competition at the Disneyland Resort. Pioneer Chorus came in 1st Place - Excellent, Men’s Ensemble came in 1st Place Superior, and our Women’s Choir took 1st Place - Superior. In SCVA news, Stephanie Ko ‘18, Sam Avila ‘19, Talia Patterson ‘18, and Samantha Weitekamp ‘18 competed in the annual SCVA Vocal Solo Competition in the spring, and they represented PHS Choral Music very well. Sam Avila ‘19 went on to the state finals competition with the California Music Education Association (CMEA) and received a silver rating!

PHS Choral Music received a grant from the John C. Hench Foundation for $6,000.00! Our choral music students have worked vigorously throughout the year, representing Providence High School in numerous events and venues. Congratulations to all on a fantastic year of music making!

Providence High Arts Presents All Shook Up

ver the course of two weekends in April, Providence High Arts presented its spring musical production of All Shook Up to PHS and its neighboring community. Set in a square little town in a square little state in 1955, and featuring a vibrant score comprised of the songs of Elvis Presley, a guitar-playing young man rides into town and changes everything and everyone he meets in this hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy about the magic of romance and the power of rock and roll.

Featuring a cast of forty students that rehearsed over the span of three months, and another twenty dedicated to crew, this rockin’ musical enjoyed a nearly sold-out run, energizing the house and bringing audiences to their feet. The show included several double-cast roles, two student musicians, and our first ever Dance Captain, as well as introduced the most freshmen to date cast in the spring musical, two of which (Juliette Dube ‘21 & Amila Kapetanovic ‘21) shared the lead role of Natalie/Ed. Our students also had the privilege of presenting the spirited full company number, “Come On Everybody”, at this year’s Gala fundraising event. What an honor it was to showcase our amazing performing arts students in this capacity and to bring awareness to the impact that the arts has on our young people.

Lastly, we were honored to enter our production of All Shook Up into the High School Musical Theatre Awards of Los Angeles competition, known as the Jerry Herman Awards. It is a regional competition run by the renowned Nederlander group and based at the Pantages Theatre. Adjudicators attended several performances and provide critique on a number of categories, both technical- and performance-based. Last year, Providence received four nominations and one win for our production of The Addams Family, walking away with the 2017 Jerry Herman Award for Best Technical Crew! This year, our backstage excellence was recognized once again with another nomination for Best Technical Crew of 2018! Also, two of our cast members, Juliette Dube ‘21 and Sean Hulne ‘20, had the privilege of competing for the Best Actress and Best Actor categories on stage at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre, hoping to advance to the national Jimmy Awards competition in New York later this summer! It’s certainly no small feat to be recognized in this event, as more than 40 productions from over 30 different schools across Los Angeles County take part.

major Teaching & Learning Goal in our Strategic Plan is to “seize upon meaningful interdisciplinary connections…to enhance student engagement.” Student engagement can be a difficult quality to define, measure, and deliberately build.

Based on recent educational research and data, the criteria that has the most positive impact on student engagement are student choice, personal relevance, the student-teacher relationship, and connections to the real world outside the classroom walls.

One initiative we started this school year to build on those criteria was a new approach to Summer Reading. Students often dread summer work, in part because they do not have a voice or choice in what they read, so we decided to involve them in the selection process for our summer reading. ONE SCHOOL, ONE STORY is a program whereby community members submit suggestions for books or podcasts for the entire school to read together over the summer. We then reviewed and reduced that initial list, which became the ‘Sweet 16 Summer Reading Bracket.’

As an educational community and part of the Providence St. Joseph Health organization, we are keenly aware of the need to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health issues and build resilience, especially for the adolescents we serve. We are fortunate that as part of PSJH, we were able to connect with the Well Being Trust and Project 375’s “Mind Over Matter” program to bring in guest speakers Brandon and Michi Marshall earlier this year.

Students, faculty, and staff voted during the open windows for each round starting in January of 2018. By April, we had a winner!

The entire faculty and staff received copies of the winning novel, John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down during Faculty/Staff Appreciation Week and teachers held brainstorming sessions to develop innovative approaches to interdisciplinary discussions, activities, and community outreach involving the major themes of the novel.

We are excited about the additional opportunities to connect with community organizations and engage in school-wide discussions about Turtles All The Way Down by John Green in the fall of 2018. Then, it will be time to start submitting suggestions for our 2019 “One School, One Story” Summer Reading (or podcast or blog series). As always, as Pioneers following in the legacy of the Sisters of Providence, we will continue charting our own unique path as we strive to respond to the signs of the times for our students here at Providence High School. GO PIONEERS!

A particularly interesting element of the student-selected summer reading is that the protagonist of Turtles All the Way Down lives with mental health issues, a topic on which students have actively sought more information and requested more discussions. The

W

e had the best experience of our lives! We recently took a trip to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) to watch a brain surgery. Here is how the journey began. Freshman year our Medical Focus Program instructor told us about a student who was able to observe a real life surgical operation. Since that day, we knew that was something we had to see before we graduated. This year we both asked our teacher if it was possible for us to fulfill our wish. He kindly said he would see what he could do. Shortly after, he came to us and said he contacted someone at CHLA and it would be possible! We were ecstatic.

When we walked into the operating room, we were the first people inside. Ms. Kim told us that she wanted to bring us in early so we wouldn’t get in the way of the medical professionals when it was time to operate. At 7:30 am they brought in the patient and they prepped him for surgery and the anesthesiologists put him to sleep and intubated him. At around 8am, the neurosurgery fellow came into the room and made sure everything was in order. Then he shaved the patient’s head and put on the trepanation clamp. As soon as everyone was in place and the patient was fully prepped, we got to go into the room and stand behind the surgeons as they did their job. As soon as they were inside and it was time to remove the tumor, we went back to the sub-sterile room and watched the operation on the screen.

The process of signing up to be an observer was a long one. We had to fill out two applications, provide immunization records, get a Tuberculosis test, send a copy of an identification card, and they even asked for our social security number. Then we had to wait for approval from the Board of Surgery. Shortly after they gave us a schedule of days and asked us for our availability.

It was so surreal to watch and understand what was happening.

It was like an entirely different world. These professionals were literally saving someone’s life. We both agreed that when they brought the patient in, it was difficult to put our emotions aside and just focus on the surgery. However, when they prepped him, no part of him showed and he was fully covered. Five minutes into the operation, it was no longer a personal case, but it was a job. It was amazing to see what we have learned about the brain in our classroom come to life! It was one of the best experiences of our high school career and we are so thankful to have had the opportunity to observe the miraculous work of these amazing doctors.

After all the pre-approval processes were sorted out, it was finally time to watch the surgery. It was a very early morning for us. We woke up at 5:00 am and traveled from Burbank to CHLA. We met with [PHS alumna] Janet Han Kim ‘05 who gave us a quick tour of the facility and explained the case of the patient who was to be operated on. We then prepared ourselves for the surgery by wearing a bunny suit, tying our hair back, wearing a hair net, putting on shoe covers, and leaving all of our personal belongings in the locker room.

Boys’ Volleyball Team Named Liberty League Champions Four-year varsity player Zack Pikhart ‘18 led the Pioneers to their first Liberty League crown since 2014. It was a remarkable turnaround for the Pioneers, who finished 19-6, 7-1 in league under second-year coach Nicole Brouillard. The previous season, Providence went 7-14 and 1-6 in league.

For his efforts, Pikhart was named the Liberty League Player of the Year. Earning spots on the singular All-Liberty League team were Pioneers senior libero Weston Tengan ‘18, sophomore setter Gerald Martin ‘20 and freshman middle blocker Nick Tidik ‘21.

Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer Teams Named Independence League Champions

Providence High School had the opportunity to participate and engage in the critically important conversation about mental health. PROJECT 375 is an extraordinary leader in the mental health space. Founded in 2012 by NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall and his wife Michi, PROJECT 375 is a national non -profit dedicated to unlocking human potential through conversation, education, and inspiration.

The girls’ soccer team achieved back-to-back Independence League championship titles. Orla Dempsey '21 was recognized as Independence League's Player of the Year and Kelly Fitzgerald '18, Shannon Walsh '19, Cecile Habash '21, and Kylee Obermeyer '21 were named to the singular all-league team.

The boys’ soccer team also achieved an Independence League Championship. Weston Tengan ‘18 was named the Independence League Player of the Year and was joined on the all-league team by fellow teammates Paul Swaine ‘18, Elias Ferguson ‘18, Montgomery Greene ‘18, and Bryan Ortiz ‘21.

On Friday, February 16, Brandon and Michi spoke to the PHS community in an effort to break down the stigma and open up conversations about mental health education, advocacy, and awareness.

Girls’ and Boys’ Track Teams Experience Successful Season

With offices in New York City and Chicago, PROJECT 375 responds to the needs of adolescents by providing parents, teachers and staff members with Youth Mental Health First Aid Training. The foundation has appeared on nationally syndicated television shows such as The View and Inside The NFL on Showtime, as well as local news outlets throughout New York and Chicago.

In 2017, PROJECT 375 along with Brandon and Michi Marshall, were honored by the Mental Health Association for their tireless advocacy for the mental health community.

The boys’ track team set out to win a Liberty League title this season, something that has not been accomplished since 1978, and did just that - dominating league finals and outscoring second place Trinity Classical Academy by 31 points!

Providence Artists Receive Accolades Congratulations to all 33 artists from PHS featured at the Burbank Youth Art Expo. Works created by Ruby Egloff ‘21 and Kristen Ayap ‘19 received special awards.

Over the Easter break, the Southern California Regional awards for the CAEA Young Artist Month competition and exhibit were held.

Five counties were represented and Angelo Vitug ‘20 won first place in the digital media category and Katie Luttenberger ‘18 won first place in the 3D category. Katie Also won the Ruth Jenson scholarship which is awarded to one senior in the Southern California region.

profile: LINDA WYATT Ms. Wyatt moved to Los Angeles after high school to attend UCLA from 1968-1972. She completed an additional year in order to gain a California teaching credential. In 1974, she found her second “family” at Providence High School, which became a co-educational school in the same year. When she came to the Providence community, she had a sense of being at home in the Catholic Church and in 1978 she became a Catholic. The Sisters of Providence have had a great influence on her personal and professional growth during her more than four decades at Providence and she became a Sisters of Providence Associate in 2012.

Ms. Wyatt is committed to the school’s mission and values, and her years of teaching have been richly rewarding. In 1994, Ms. Wyatt received the Los Angeles Times Teacher of the Year Award, and in 1999 she was honored for 25 years of teaching at a special celebration. Current and former students attended this mass and reception which are among her treasured memories of Providence.

In addition to teaching French, she served as the World Languages Department Chair, the ASB Advisor, and a Kairos Adult Team Member. Ms. Wyatt has held many positions during her tenure at Providence including Sophomore Class Moderator, Senior Class Moderator, CSF Advisor, Spanish teacher, and English teacher.

Ms. Wyatt's interests include travel, movies, classical concerts, reading and her two cats. A highlight of her career at Providence has been the summer Europe trips where she has led PHS students on tours throughout the Western European countries for more than 20 years.

fter 44 years, Ms. Linda Wyatt is retiring from Providence.

Known for her cheerful disposition, Ms. Wyatt always greeted her students and colleagues with a smile and a friendly “hello.” She was honored during this year’s Baccalaureate Mass and a special luncheon is being held in her honor this August (see page 39 for more information).

You received your BA in French and minored in Spanish.

What inspired you to study different languages, and ultimately, teach them?

Born and raised in Albany, New York, Wyatt is the oldest of four children. During her childhood, reading and education were a priority in her home. She was introduced at an early age to the arts by her mother who was a freelance art critic for the local newspaper. Consequently, she discovered her vocation of teaching as a little girl and created her own “school” with her friends on the block as her students.

I knew teaching was my vocation from the time I was a little girl.

I set up a play school with the kids from my block and enjoyed teaching them. In high school I was inspired by my high school French teacher and went on to major in French and minor in Spanish at UCLA. I love languages and learning about other cultures.

You were inspired by the Sisters of Providence to become a Catholic. What was it about them that compelled you to make the leap of faith, so to speak?

The Sisters of Providence are my role-models; I love their commitment to Christ and service to others, especially the poor.

I am not only inspired by their faith, but also by the fact that they are truly happy women. It has been a pleasure to work with them and to continue my friendship with them by becoming a Providence Associate and celebrating their Jubilees with them.

Sr. Mary Hawkins and Sr. Susanne Hartung were my godmothers when I became a Catholic in 1978 and my friendship with them continues to this day.

You’re an avid traveler, and have chaperoned numerous PHS Europe trips. Do you have a favorite destination?

I love to travel and have especially enjoyed my trips with my students and colleagues to Europe. I began leading students abroad in 1980 and continued regularly until 2001, with a hiatus and then a couple more trips in 2012 and 2013. Besides visiting sites and enriching their understanding of being global citizens, the students learned important life skills. It was also wonderful to see them use their language skills in France and Spain. My favorite destination of course is Paris - it is such a beautiful and romantic city, rich in art and culture. I feel that the travel experience is truly the “global classroom.” Some of my favorite memories include: • •

them has been my passion. I will also miss my colleagues, many of whom have been my friends through the years. I have been proud to teach with them. I’ll miss being ASB Advisor - it was a privilege to work with the student leadership and I have great memories of our leadership camps and planning activities together, especially Theme Night.

What do you look forward to in your retirement?

What will you miss the most about PHS?

I look forward to more travel, reading, visiting museums, attending concerts, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying my home.

I will definitely miss the PHS community the most - it has been my second family. It has always been a caring community with a deep commitment to our core values. My students have kept me young and I will miss their energy and enthusiasm - teaching

Class of 2018 Says Farewell

T

he Class of 2018 officially joined the ranks of Providence alumni as they graduated on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills.

Michelle Vardapetyan ‘18, who will attend UCLA, was named the valedictorian. She was a member of the Medical Focus Program, president of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and National Honor Society (NHS), and member of the Spanish Honor Society, and ASB Religious Commissioner. Michelle was also named recipient of the Mother Joseph Award.*

Angela Romano ‘18 was named the recipient of the 2018 Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award** and will attend Willamette University. Angela was President of High Arts Leadership, captain of the cheer team, and involved with Mock Trial. Truman Picazo ‘18 was named the recipient of the Spirit Award.*** Truman was involved in the drama department, golf team, and member of NHS and CSF. He will attend the University of California, Santa Cruz.

In keeping with a fairly new tradition, “Pioneering Families” were recognized during the graduation ceremony. To be eligible, families must have at least three graduating members of Providence High School. This year, four families were recognized: the Buenaventura-Hurst family (Luke ‘14, Michael ‘16, Noah ‘17, and Zachary ‘18), the Gregorio family (Carina ‘18, Lauren ‘18, and Patrick ‘18), the Markey family (Caitlin ‘13, Sarah ‘16, and Brian ‘18), and the Roxas family (Adrian ‘07, Andrew ‘12, and Albert John ‘18).

Ionne Arakelyan ‘18, who will also attend UCLA, was named the co-salutatorian, along with Ryan Donnelly ‘18, who will attend Kansas State University. Ionne was a member of the Medical Focus Program, co-founder of the STEM Projects Club, Solar Boat Captain, and ASB Spirit Commissioner. Ryan was Captain of the track and field team, member of the cross country team, and President of the Urban Ecology Club.

Michelle concluded her speech by imparting words of wisdom to her fellow graduates.

In her valedictorian address, Michelle echoed Mrs. Castro’s sentiment.

“Each and every one of you has so many great talents that helped us achieve anything we put our minds to. Now, the time has come to put these talents to use in the real world. The path we will soon undertake is going to be a new journey, a journey with endless possibilities and a fresh start to something great.”

“Wherever you choose to go and whatever you choose to do, use the talents you have learned and matured at Providence High School to impact this world and make a difference. Remember, make this world a place of color for all and whenever you are in doubt, just remember: ‘Behind you are all your memories, before you are all your dreams, around you are all those who love you, and within you is all you need.’”

Michelle urged her fellow graduates to forge their own paths, staying true to themselves while also embracing challenges and not being disappointed with failure.

Class of 1960 Submitted by Liz Mitchell ‘60: “Here's a photo of seven "girls" from the Class of 1960. It was taken when we went to Huntington Gardens in San Marino on June 20, 2018. FYI, all of us are part of the group of ten who put together our class' 50th reunion back in 2010. We had so much fun planning it that we've been getting together several times a year ever since. We've had gatherings everywhere from the race track in Del Mar, the Mission Inn in Riverside and Balboa Island to slumber parties at the beach in Capistrano and Oxnard, to annual shopping days at the Grove every December. Karen Green Drown ‘62 - “I survived the Montecito mudslide. My neighbor pulled me from my mud filled truck and took me back uphill to my house. Later that day a fireman brought me two muddy dogs and asked if I wanted them. That afternoon, I waded through waist high mud and ash to the frontage road dragging two big dogs.

Sometimes God gives us extra strength. I was blessed to spend several weeks with my son Bill and his family. This experience really puts things in perspective. I felt like a Pioneer.”

Bobbie Smith Polizzi ‘63 - “I retired from a career in advertising design and product development a few years ago and I am now a full time artist. I live in Flat Rock, western North Carolina and am very involved with area galleries and the art community. I also teach my assemblage art techniques.”

Bakunas ‘67 - “In April 2018, we bought a house on 3.5 acres in Shooting Star Ranch, Teton Valley, Victor, Idaho on Fox Creek. We are approximately two hours from Yellowstone with the back of our property being a 10 minute walk into Wyoming and half hour drive to Targhee Ski lifts, where they have Teton Valley’s best Nordic Skiing.

The weather is so much better than the 115 degrees we would be having in Santa Clarita. Most days here have been in the 70’s, however, we have had snow, rain, and sun all in one week.

My grandson, Jackson, is currently at Football camp at Boise State, on the

Claire Dumer Holdaway ‘69 - “I have a couple of updates. In May 2017, I retired from my forty-year career in the computer industry as a computer programmer and analyst. Thanks to Providence for all of the math and science that helped me forge my way as a woman in this technical field, which is so frequently dominated by men. I’m enjoying my retired life by maintaining my organic permaculture vegetable garden and singing in two choruses. I sing in the Forever Young Chorus of Grass Valley and the Sierra Master Chorale. Thanks to Providence and Sr. Priscilla for the great experience in chorus that helped me continue my passion for music!
