dear FriendS oF Providence HigH ScHool,

As I reflect upon another successful, meaningful, and fulfilling school year at Providence High School, I am constantly reminded about why I love this community so much. It is the people of Providence who make this such a special place. All of us – students, parents, alums, faculty, staff, administration, Providence St. Joseph Health system, – are following in the footsteps of and seeking what Blessed Emilie Gamelin and Mother Joseph sought and what all Sisters of Providence continue to seek. We all, “as people of Providence, reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.” Providence High School is an amazing community of people of Providence!

I think back to the generosity of time, talents, and treasures from everyone who participated in our highly successful spring Gala. I think about our loyal donors who have supported our Family Pledge Program, the Rafael Vega Endowed Scholarship, and our Providence Fund. I think about the numerous parent volunteers who work behind the scenes to make our events so successful. I value our students who all embrace and live our Core Values of Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence, and Stewardship on a daily basis, and of course, I am in awe of the love, inspiration, and support which our faculty and staff provides each and every day. This year was extra special since it ended with the retirement of our legendary teacher, Mr. Rafael Vega, who began teaching at Providence in 1968. Mr. Vega is the poster child for a “Person of Providence!” We are forever grateful for his service to our community, and we are excited that he is joining our Board of Regents. Abigail Urbina ‘17, valedictorian of the Class of 2017, who will be attending UCLA in the fall, said during her commencement speech, “Providence has fostered us all to be neighborly, open-minded, and amicable. There is so much diversity here at Providence that I’ve never felt more at home. You will never spend a day at Providence without being smiled at or greeted in the hallway. At Providence, unlike a lot of high schools, it’s nice to know that all the faculty and staff know your name, want to know how you’re doing, and are willing to help you in any single way they possibly can. Tutoring, clubs, athletics – you name it. We have all the support we can get. Everyone truly belongs here.” Abigail was part of a stellar senior class. A class of talented dreamers who will go out and make a difference in our world!

Thank you again for your support of the Providence Fund and the Family Pledge Program. Without your ongoing generosity, we would not be able to continue to build up this community that we all love and cherish.

Yours in Providence,

Joe Sciuto Head of School YOU BELONG HERE.
