PHS Welcomes Michael Westphal as New Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach

rovidence High School is excited to announce the hiring of Mr. Michael Westphal as the new boys’ varsity basketball coach. He will also be a full-time physical education teacher and assistant varsity golf coach in addition to his head boys’ varsity coaching duties.

Michael Westphal’s basketball pedigree is strong. His father, Paul Westphal, was a star at USC and was the tenth pick in the 1972 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. He was a five-time NBA All Star, the head coach at Pepperdine for five years, and he was also an NBA head coach for 10 years.

Coach Westphal earned a Bachelor of Arts, Production Communication degree from Pepperdine University. While at Pepperdine, he played Division I basketball for the Waves and averaged 25 minutes and 9.0 points per game, and he shot 45% from three point range over his Pepperdine career. Coach Westphal also earned a Master of Business Administration, Sports Business degree from Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, FL.

Rounding out the staff for the boys’ basketball program are Shayaun Saee, Dade Faison, and Kebu Stewart. Saee, who will be assisting Westphal with the varsity team, is an NBA Data Analyst and former basketball player.

Junior varsity coach Stewart, a former NBA player, was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 1997 NBA Draft.

He played 15 games during the 1997–98 NBA season, averaging 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Stewart will also be assisting with the boys’ varsity basketball team.

Coach Westphal recently finished his second year as the head coach at Moorpark High School. The program that he took over finished the 2013-2014 season with a 7-20 record and last place in league, but in his first season his Moorpark team finished 17-11 and in second place in the very competitive Marmonte League.

Faison, the freshman boys’ coach, received a full ride at the University of Maine, where he played basketball and discovered the call to become a coach.

Before coaching at Moorpark, Coach Westphal was an assistant coach at both Oaks Christian School and Calabasas High School.

Coach Westphal is known as a very positive coach and leader of youth. He is excited to join a faith-based community and his love for the game and his basketball mind will bring a winning spirit

Providence High Arts Production of Seussical the Musical Wins Jerry Herman Award

A cast of 61 students, rehearsing over the span of three months, and a crew of another half dozen put an incredible amount of time, energy and heart into this production…and it showed! The musical played to six sold-out audiences and, for the first time ever, our students had the privilege of presenting an on-campus field trip show for neighboring feeder schools! 190 chaperones and students, ranging from first to fifth grade, from St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Finbar joined us for a morning performance and cast Q&A. The theatre was abuzz with excitement and our students could not stop talking about how impactful it was to act as ambassadors for our school and Performing Arts program.

Lastly, our production of Seussical was entered into a High School Musical Theatre Awards of Los Angeles competition, known as the Jerry Herman Awards. It is a regional competition run by the renowned Nederlander group and based at the Pantages Theatre.

Adjudicators attended the performances and provided critique on a number of categories, both technical and performance-based.

In our first year participating in this event, Providence received two nominations and one win, walking away with the 2016 Jerry Herman Award for Best Scenic Design! We were up against 35 other productions from 32 different schools, most of which have much larger budgets and far more advanced facilities than our little theatre...aka the old gym! If only we had a legitimate stateof-the-art space...imagine what we could do!

Two of the cast members, Tyler Bridges ‘18 and Margaret Staedler ‘16, had the honor of competing for the Best Actor and Best Actress categories on stage at the Pantages. They took part in a weekend full of auditions and rehearsals and were fantastic as they performed in the opening and closing numbers of the entire show. Though our crew did not win the Best Technical Crew category for which they were nominated, they represented us well and still had the recognition of a job well done among a sea of other schools. It was an all-around wonderful experience for our students and a thrill to have our little corner by the freeway share some big-time spotlight in the high school arts scene. We plan to make this competition a mainstay for years to come and look forward to bringing home more trophies!

O

ver two weekends in April, Providence High Arts presented its spring musical production of Seussical the Musical to the community. Combining characters and locations from over 15 of the legendary Dr. Seuss’ stories, Seussical brings to life a young boy’s imagination and his journey to discover his voice. With the help of such beloved characters as Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird, and the Cat in the Hat, JoJo learns that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Senior Projects Program Prepares Students for Future Careers

he Senior Projects Program, now in its third year at Providence, is more than just an additional project to add stress to graduating seniors who are already overworked and experiencing a high degree of “senioritis.”

This year, the program provided more than 100 students the opportunity to be more prepared for their future through the exploration of a potential profession.

students is learning from adults who are not their teachers.

“I hope students use these products to apply to internships as freshmen in college,” said Senior Projects Coordinator Joannes Pamatmat ’03. “It’s possible.”

“The Senior Projects Program taught me proper and professional etiquette,” reflected Caitlin Caguco ‘16, who is interested in film production. “As a teenager, I’m ignorant of the propriety necessary for a work environment. It also taught me not to be terrified of talking to grown-ups because most of the time they’re just as lost as we are.”

In fact, as a result of Senior Projects, Justin Idian ’16 was offered an internship and Marie Bardelli ’16 was offered part-time work this summer.

Miguel Mendiola ’16, who is interested in the physical therapy field added, “I gained a business-oriented mindset and social skills. I learned to communicate better and take charge of the situations I’m in.”

Each student spent at least 30 hours on their projects. One student went all the way to the Philippines and took part in a medical mission for his fieldwork. Another student created a mock crime scene on campus for other Providence students to analyze. Other fields of interest included physical therapy, fashion design, marketing, game programming, film production, nursing, dentistry, epidemiology, business, and education.

Leaving the comforts and familiarity of high school can be daunting, especially as these recent graduates embark on their college lives, but the Senior Project Program is a step closer to helping them discover who they want to be.

“From the senior projects program, I learned that no dream is out of reach for me,” said Nycole Wells ‘16, who is interested in event production and management. “I was very passionate about my Senior Project which made it a fun learning experience for me and not something that just took up my time.”

Allyson Casella ‘16, who is interested in a career in the fashion industry reflected, “I gained the confidence and independence to know I’ll be okay in the real world.”

Pamatmat ’03 said one of the biggest takeaways for some of the

PHS Participates in Solar Cup

The Rocket Project Final Portfolio Assessment “How I Learned to Stop Fearing the Unknown and Embrace a Challenge”

F

or the third year in a row, on May 13-15 at Lake Skinner, Providence High School students, led by faculty member Jeff Kubasak, participated in the 14th annual Solar Cup, which is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

I

n late April all of the 11th grade students were handed a huge challenge: to re-enact the Space Race albeit in a greatly simplified form. This is the 23rd year for the project and as usual, the classes rose to the challenge. Students formed engineering cells and then drafted formal engineering proposals complete with operational designs, financial plans, and work assignments.

They then set about designing and building model rockets that would meet the proposed goals. Some chose to build multi-staged rockets such as NASA used for the moon shots, others chose to design multi-engine clusters, while others worked on boosted gliders and attempts at breaking the sound barrier. After weeks of blood, sweat, and more than a few tears, they traveled out before dawn to El Mirage Dry Lake Recreation area just north of Lake Los Angeles to flight test their designs.

Providence was among 38 teams participating in the six-county, 5,200 square-mile service area, which includes Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties. The Solar Cup is a year long program in which students build, equip and race 16-foot, single-seat boats powered only by the sun. The Solar Cup Program allows students to apply their skills in math, physics, engineering and communications, while learning about Southern California’s water resources, resource management, conservation, and alternative energy development.

Each team constructs a 16-foot boat outfitted with a solarcollection panel. The teams compete in endurance races around a 1.6 kilometer course in the morning and afternoon on the second day of the event. On the final day, the boats’ solar panels are removed. The boats compete in 200-meter sprint races powered by solar energy stored in batteries.

Amid screams of joy, wows of wonderment, and some oohs related to CATOs (catastrophic failures in rocket jargon), a whole lot of practical learning took place. Every student out there was amazed that they were able to do what they did. Making the day especially enjoyable was that we were joined by a regionally recognized team of girls from Notre Dame Academy and their teacher Dr. Kathy Griffis. The NDA girls had just returned from the national T.A.R.C. rocketry competition. For our launch, the girls built a rocket with a strap on pen camera that captured the launch from a rocket’s eye view. It was pretty amazing.

“I am just so incredibly proud of the amazing amount of work both [Jeff] and the kids put in. It was a wonderful weekend,” reflected Susan Beckenham, Providence High School’s Technology Focus Program Director.

What makes it all the more so was the fact that PHS had done the same thing back in the 90’s, only with a super 8 movie camera and film! It just goes to show you how much technology has evolved.

Spring Sports Roundup

T

he defending Liberty League championship softball team overcame injury and rain delays to have another strong showing in league. The Pioneers finished in second place and qualified for playoffs. The team traveled four hours to Big Pine High School in the first round and won in commanding fashion.

The team then played host to number one-ranked Rolling Hills Prep. The Pioneers showed their pride on the field and battled until the last out. Four members of the team, Rachel Camonayan ‘16, Fabi Jimenez ‘16, Emily Mai ‘16, and Francesca Maravilla ‘18 were named to the All Liberty League team.

Visual & Performing Arts Department Concludes Year on a High Note

T

he Visual and Performing Arts Department completed the season with a grand performance and awards night at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. This was a night of celebration featuring classical & contemporary music, dance, evocative visual art, and scenes from America’s most prolific playwrights.

The boys’ baseball team finished second in league and earned a spot in playoffs for the second straight year. The Pioneers earned an exciting extra-innings walk off win in the first round against St. Margaret’s. Thomas Keller ‘16 hit a ground ball single that scored Nicholas Knezevich ‘18 for the win! Providence then hosted defending champion Flintridge Prep. The Pioneers fought hard but were defeated 4-2. Named to the All Liberty League team were Thomas Keller ‘16, Sean Holt ‘16, and Dante Cano ‘16.

Providence Singers concluded their competition season with a performance at the Glendale A Cappella Festival on May 21st.

PHS was the only private Catholic high school represented at the event. Out of nine high schools, PHS came in third place next to John Burroughs High School and Valencia High School.

The boys’ volleyball team had another successful season, finishing third in the Liberty League. They earned a spot in playoffs and traveled to AGBU Canoga Park for a Wild-Card match. They swept AGBU and traveled to St. Genevieve for their first round match. The Pioneers earned a five game win that ended in a dominating 25-12 victory over the Valiants. Providence hosted Damien High School in the second round. The Pioneers battled for every point but came up short and lost in three games to the eventual CIF champions.

It was another successful season for the golf program. The golf team earned a third place finish in league. Three members, Joseph Brion ‘16, Eddie Hwang ‘16, and Paolo Largoza ‘17, were among the top golfers in league and qualified for League Finals. Eddie qualified for CIF and traveled to Camarillo for the first round of playoffs, where he finished three over par at Las Posas Country Club but did not qualify for the second round.

Track and Field, Providence’s largest group of athletes, competed in league meets at Birmingham High School. Jasmine Ramirez ‘16 and Jason Batungbacal ‘16 earned first place victories in shot put and the 100 yard dash and earned the opportunity to compete at CIF prelims.

Mr. Rafe Vega was shrunken down to a miniature bobble-head version of himself as part of an auction item benefiting Providence’s Gala. Aram Nadjarian ‘02 was the lucky winning bidder and returned to campus to claim his prize, which truly bears an uncanny resemblance to the real Mr. Vega!

faculty profile: Marisa Rawlins-Bradfield

M

arisa Rawlins-Bradfield is a Los Angeles native who has been teaching voice and choral directing for over fourteen years. From an early age, Marisa has had the opportunity to sing for radio, television, and feature films, along with performing with some of the most prestigious choral ensembles in the United States. Ms. Rawlins-Bradfield is currently the Department Chair of the Performing Arts Dept. and Choral Music Director at Providence High School (Providence High Arts), where she has worked for eight years. Along with her teaching, Marisa is the Artistic Director of the Los Angeles All-Diocese Queen of Angels Honor Choir and serves as the Vice President of the Southern California Vocal Association Vocal Solo Competition. Ms. Rawlins-Bradfield is the Music Director at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Granada Hills where she conducts the adult and children’s choir.

As a vocal coach, Marisa has had the pleasure of working with professional recording artists, conservatory music program students, and individuals who love to sing as a hobby. Marisa’s students have appeared on the Disney Channel, ABC, FOX, Lifetime, along with notable performances at the Hollywood Bowl, the Luckman Performing Arts Center, The Broad Stage, the Aratani Japan American Theater, the Ford Amphitheater, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the House of Blues. Marisa enjoys coaching students on audition preparation, and they have had successful acceptances to the University of Southern California, Berklee College of Music, University of California, Santa Barbara, Chapman University, Renaissance Arts Academy, Providence High School, the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, & Colburn School of Music. Marisa has toured internationally and has sung in concert halls in the United States, Canada, Wales, England, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic. Marisa received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education with a Choral Emphasis from California State University, Northridge where she studied with Paul Smith and received her Master of Arts degree in Music Education and Teaching Credential from the University of Southern California, where she was the recipient of the USC Flora L. Thornton School of Music 2009 Honors Convocation, D ’Addario Foundation Achievement Award.

As a young child, were you musically inclined? Did you participate in your high school’s choir or theatre arts program?

I’ve had the privilege of growing up in a musical family. My mother is a union session singer and my father is a pianist, arranger, and music director. I was never forced into music. I was naturally drawn to it and I knew from a young age that it was going to be a big part of my life. I began attending the Los Angeles Music and Art School when I was four years old. Both of my parents taught there and I would spend the majority of my Saturdays going to a combination of piano, voice, bass, saxophone, dance, or visual art classes until I was fifteen. Once my mother saw that I was a performer and could take direction, she would contract me to sing on national commercials and movie soundtracks. When it was time to go to high school, I auditioned for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) and was accepted into the Vocal Music Department.

The PHS choirs attend multiple festivals and competitions throughout the school year. Most of them are held in the spring semester. There are unique requirements for each competition.

Many of them ask to hear at least one song in a foreign language, and one be sung a cappella. There are now new festivals that incorporate sight-reading and ear training tests as a part of the overall scoring.

You have quite an impressive resume as a professional singer and vocal coach. Is there a particular musical genre that you are drawn to?

I love so many different genres of music. I grew up in a home that had an eclectic soundtrack. You could hear samba, mariachi, jazz, classical, contemporary “80’s” pop, etc. But if I were to choose, I would say, jazz. While attending LACHSA, I became infatuated with everything jazz. I would memorize Ella Fitzgerald scats and horn lines of Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins. I was a member of LACHSA’s prestigious vocal jazz ensemble and it was there when I got to meet my first music educator mentor, Pat Bass. With her guidance, our groups performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Reno Jazz Festival, Fullerton Jazz Festival, International Association of Jazz Educators Convention, and the Playboy Jazz Festival. When I graduated high school, I went to Amherst University to study with the great jazz vocalist, Sheila Jordan and the late Dr. Billy Taylor.

I knew that I wanted to be a music educator when I was in high school, but I didn’t know in what capacity. Once I knew that I was going to be a choral director, I immersed myself into everything choral literature and went on to attend California State University, Northridge and the University of Southern California. I’d love to have a vocal jazz group at PHS someday!

With the rise in popularity of show choirs, arguably due to the success of the tv show, Glee, and films such as Pitch Perfect, have you seen an increase in student interest in the performing arts?

Has this changed your approach to teaching and planning for choir competitions?

Coincidentally, my first year at PHS was the premiere season of Glee. I think that Glee definitely helped in recharging the interest for choirs everywhere. More than anything, the kids that were already invested in choir became even more enthusiastic and prideful in their passion. At this time, PHS does not compete as a show choir program. The choral choreography is an addition to the choral literature we compete with. I work very closely with our choreographers. We produce the annual Broadway Revue performance and the spring High Arts Finale.

The annual large trip for Providence Singers takes about a year to organize. As you could imagine, there are so many fine details to organizing an itinerary for 50+ people. The initial details begin with the approvals from administration a year before the travel dates, auditions and callbacks will take place the year prior, I have to identify my ensemble members’ proficiencies before we have our initial rehearsal at the beginning of the year, and I like to choose interesting, educational, and/or historical destinations that will influence and inspire the chosen repertoire for the year.

Of

all the competitions you prepare for, is there one that is a

favorite for you each year?

If I had to choose one, I would say that I look forward to the Glendale A Cappella Festival with Providence Singers. This is a competition that has become a tradition for PHS. It’s an event that is hosted by the Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus. They have established a relationship with the John C. Hench Foundation and award grants to the invited choirs. This year, PHS was the only private Catholic high school represented at the event. Out of nine public high schools with well-established choral programs, PHS came in third place next to Burroughs High School and Valencia High School. PHS Choral Music received a grant in the amount of $3,500!

How do you approach each school year in terms of preparing for choral competitions? Is there an overall theme that you decide on which sets the tone for what songs will be performed?

The Performing Arts Department meets at the end of each school year to establish the theme for the upcoming season. We combine our wish lists of material and create our storyline from there. I usually start thinking about repertoire six months before the performance date. My lesson plans are based around the chosen music throughout the year. I don’t repeat tunes from a previous season, so my lesson plans are never the same. I like it that way.

I teach the principle concepts and techniques through different content, which makes it fresh for my returning students and myself!

I’m always keeping my ear open for something that could work for one of my choirs. I enjoy having conversations with students about what they’re currently listening to and I try to have their tastes in mind when picking music. It’s always a collaboration between students, accompanists, and other directors.

You collaborate with Dominic Catrambone and Jeremy Jackson, the Co-Directors of the Theatre Arts Department at PHS quite a bit. How has this partnership evolved over the years?

The three of us were hired in 2009. Our relationship has grown every year. However, the past two years have been extremely collaborative and we truly have a fantastic partnership. We have our designated tasks, but we are equally involved in the process of creating our season and producing our shows. I love those guys.

The Class of 2016 Leaves Its Mark on PHS

O

n June 4, 2016, all 102 members of the Class of 2016 took their places onstage at the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. After Sister Nancy Jurecki, OP, Chief Mission Integration Officer for Providence Health & Services California Region, delivered the benediction, Head of School Joe Sciuto introduced Commander Donald Urquidez, retired from the United States Navy, who presented Ryan Chow ‘16 with an accommodation. Each year, the U.S. Naval Academy receives approximately 18,000 applications. Only about 1,400 applicants are invited to attend the Naval Academy, and Ryan has the distinct honor of being in that group. Not surprisingly, this announcement was met with resounding applause and a standing ovation.

One such student striving to be better and do good in the world, is Stephanie Figueroa ‘16, the recipient of the 2016 Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award. Stephanie completed more than 500 service hours throughout her four years at PHS, many of which were completed at Four Seasons Healthcare and Wellness Center and Kaiser Permanente.

Ada-Nicole Sanger ‘16 was presented with the Mother Joseph Award, named in recognition of Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart, who was the founder of Providence schools and health care facilities in the western U.S. The award, voted on by the faculty and staff, is the highest honor presented by Providence High School to a graduating senior.

It is a tradition at Providence for members of the senior class to nominate and select a speaker for the graduation ceremony. This year, Shea Sahm ‘16 was selected by his peers, which was an honor not lost on him. Shea challenged his classmates to “set yourself up with people who are hungry and want success as bad[ly] as you do. Remember that birds of a feather will flock together. Strive to be with people who will make you better.”

Salutatorian Grant Menke ‘16, who will attend UCLA this fall, was presented his medallion by Principal Allison DeFrancesco Castro ‘02 and Dean of Studies Kerry Martin, and his mother, Erica Menke, a member of Providence’s Board of Regents, had the honor of presenting Grant with his diploma.

To be part of the celebration was an honor for me. I hope more alumni from the Class of 1962 will be able to attend the next May Crowning and mass. I’m still teaching at Los Feliz STEMM Magnet, celebrating my 50th year there.”

Josee Marquis-Chasles ’70 – “I retired on December 31st, 2015 after 43 years in travel.

I began my career at Eastern Airlines and worked for three large corporate travel agencies over the years. So far retirement is terrific. I am the grandmother of two fabulous grandchildren: Stella, who is four years old, and James, who is two years old.

I am also the step-grandma to four other wonderful kids from seven to 14 years old.

The loves of our life! I’m planning loads of travel in the coming months.”

Maureen Murtaugh Audia ‘74 - “I’ve been married to Jim Audia since 1988. We have one son, Justin, who just turned 19. I teach crafts to first and second grades, and am a leader in a national Bible learning club for children. I am avidly involved with the Notre Dame Irish Knight Band.”

Barbara Penkal Kornylo ‘75 - “My husband and I have relocated to Fairfax Station, VA. It’s the first time I’ve ever lived outside of California. I’ve accepted a position with my current employer, Shell Oil Company as a Senior Advisor for Stakeholder Relations for the Americas located in Washington DC.” Robert Bates ‘79 – “I currently reside in Pasadena and am the Dean of Student Life and teacher at the Excelsior School. I also maintain a part-time mediation practice while pursuing my M.A. in History at Cal State LA.”

Steven Misiurak ‘81 has been the City Engineer for the City of Gig Harbour, 17

located as a suburb of Seattle for 17 years and was recently appointed by the WA State Governor as the local city’s representative to the Public Works Board, an infrastructure board that funds water, storm, sewer and roadway improvement projects via low interest loan rates. Steve has been married for 25 years to his wife, Zina, and his two children reside in nearby Vancouver, Canada.

1990’s

Colin Marchelletta ‘93 - “I will be receiving my BA in Military History from American Military University in January. I plan to pursue a Master’s in Post Secondary Education to teach at a high school or college in Carson City, Nevada. There are already schools there that are courting me to work for them. I was nominated and confirmed by Governor Brown to sit on the Selective Service System Board, which is a group of five citizen volunteers appointed by the Director of Selective Service on behalf of the President, based on recommendations made by their respective state governors or an equivalent public official. These men and women play an important community role closely connected with our nation’s defense. I’m a member of the Sabre and Scroll Society at AMU, which is a diverse group of students Summer 2016

4 that promote the study of history through academic research and online publications, topical discussions, and lectures of various historical topics.”

Katherine Siordia Deubner ‘97 – “I graduated with my AA in Liberal Arts: Social & Behavioral Sciences and an AA in General Studies: Social & Behavior Sciences from LA Mission College in June 2016. I will be attending Arizona State University for a BA in Religious Studies this Fall. My graduation comes after nearly two decades of hard work while having my family, working full time, and battling Multiple Sclerosis. I have worked at NEO Tech’s main headquarters in Chatsworth, CA as a Program Manager overseeing our single largest Aerospace and Defense customer contracts for seven years. This year I celebrated my first child, IvyAnne, graduating from Chaminade College Preparatory High School in West Hills, CA.”

Louis Farah, Jr. ‘02 recently graduated with his Masters in Public Policy from California State University, Northridge.

Louis currently works as a firefighter for the Lompoc Fire Department in Santa Barbara County. Additionally, Louis and Daniel Martin ’02 own Backhouse Media, LLC., a website development and online marketing company.

(Photo #3) Nicholas Bumacod ‘06 graduated from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Dental Medicine in Pomona, CA and earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in May 2016. He is pursuing his postdoctoral training with NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine specializing in Pediatric Dentistry at their Tampa, FL site. He is currently the happy owner of two rescue dogs: Pomona, a fluffy white bichon frise, and Drake, a cockapoo.

Laura Lewis ‘06 earned her MD in May of 2016. She celebrated this milestone by traveling to Europe, the Philippines, and the east coast. To Dr. Arjan Harjani, Laura wrote: “Just wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you and all that you’ve done for myself and the countless other students over the years. Thank you so much!”

(Photo #5) Mario Adriano ‘11 - “I recently graduated from CSUN with a BA in Cinema and Television Arts with an emphasis in Television Production.

The thesis film that I created (as Producer, Director, Editor, and Sound Editor) for my senior year at CSUN was a 10-minute documentary, shot over the course of three months, that followed Providence High School students and 18

6 the Providence High Arts program, as they conceptualized and produced their first original theatre production, Lily the Glitch (which the documentary is also named). Additionally, Charles Schaefer ‘13 (son of Chris Harty Schaefer, current Director of Providence’s Cinema Arts Focus Program) was the person I chose as my Director of Photography for the project.

My documentary won five awards at CSUN’S annual TV Showcase, including Best Documentary Editing, Best Documentary Sound Editing, Best Documentary Directing, Best Documentary Cinematography, and finally, the prestigious Best in Show Award.

Immediately after graduation, I was given the opportunity to interview at Blur Studio in Culver City, founded by director Tim Miller (Deadpool). With the foundation of skills I’ve built up, interning and working with Chris Schaefer in the Cinema Arts Department for the past four semesters, as well as serving as Discovery OnStage’s Media Coordinator for the past three years, I was fortunate to be offered a position there, and I now currently serve as the studio’s Technical Animation Coordinator.”

on pro bono legal projects. His passion for community service goes back to PHS, where he was heavily involved in different service projects around the Burbank area with organizations like the Key Club, of which he was president while at PHS.

Andrew Demirchyan ‘05 is currently interning at The White House in the Office of Presidential Personnel. He is in his last semester of law school at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Andrew sincerely enjoys his work for the executive branch of the United States government, particularly because he is able to witness the behind-the-scenes work which creates positive real world impact on many Americans. Given his background as the child of immigrants, he is humbled by this opportunity and honored to serve

his country. Prior to this, he worked in the federal district court of San Francisco, for the San Francisco Public Defender, and in the University of California’s Office of the President.

Andrew is a 2009 graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he graduated in the top 3% of his class, with dual Bachelors and Masters degrees in Political Science, and a minor in Global Studies. He is an active volunteer in the community, specifically working

After his internship at the White House, Andrew plans to go back to San Francisco, where he has lived since 2013, even though he misses spending time with his family and friends in the Burbank area. He values the time he had at PHS as it helped him understand how to use his inquisitive mind to ask tough questions and seek solutions.

He encourages all PHS students to fully leverage the excellent resources of the school in helping them craft their future education and work plans. During his free time, Andrew enjoys hiking outdoors, running, and practicing yoga.

One of his fondest memories from his time at PHS was serving as the editor-in-chief of his senior year yearbook in 2005, where he collaborated with past PHS alumni from different years to highlight the school’s 50th anniversary.

2016 Gala

O

n Saturday, April 16th, Providence High School held its annual Gala at Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank. This year’s event celebrated 25 years of the Media Focus Program, which was recently renamed the Cinema Arts Focus Program.

Guests enjoyed passed hors d'oeuvres and complimentary martinis while perusing the cocktail auction items, which were displayed in the beautiful garden overlooking the golf course.

After the auction closed, guests made their way inside for dinner, a video presentation, and a spirited live auction prior to dancing the rest of the evening away.

This year’s cocktail auction took place in the garden area overlooking the golf course with a great view of Hogwarts (at Universal Studios) in the distance!

PHS Alumni Parents Honored at Mother Gamelin Society Event

T

his is the first year that Providence High School took part in the Providence Foundation Mother Gamelin Society and Circle of Caring dinner by way of honoring donors from the PHS community. The ceremony took place on April 6, 2016 at the Universal Sheraton. PHS Head of School Joe Sciuto presented Carmen and Ray Ferrante with the 2016 Foundation Leadership Award, which is only a small token of gratitude for all that they have done, and continue to do, for the school.

The Providence High School community owes a debt of gratitude to the Ferrantes, who have been pillars of the Providence High School community for more than thirty-five years. In 1988, when under-enrollment threatened to close the high school, Ray, the Chair of the Parent Board and Carmen, the self-appointed Director of Development, helped to create and implement the Medical Focus Program, one of the first of its kind in the country, and the Cinema Arts Focus Program (formerly named the Media Arts Focus Program) to recruit competitive incoming students.

As a result, enrollment increased, the high school did not close, and the Medical Focus Program and Cinema Arts Focus Program continue to be successful recruitment tools that prepare students for careers in healthcare and cinema arts.

‘85, Doug ‘86, and Bret ‘91, Carmen was a physical education and biology teacher for eight years.

Both natives of California, Carmen and Ray were married in 1966 at St. Finbar Catholic Church where they have remained active parishioners ever since. When asked what motivates their continued commitment and support of the high school, evidenced through their philanthropy, presence, and counsel, they said, “We wish to afford others the educational, religious, ethical, and moral teachings that were given to our sons.”

As Ray continued on the Parent Board, Carmen co-chaired the high school’s successful capital campaign for the Fritz B. Burns Student Activity Center and Gymnasium, was a member of the Board of Regents, and officially served as Director of Development.

In addition to his leadership at the high school, Ray had a successful 47-year career in financial services, working for IBM, American Heritage Bankcard Services and Century Bank Card Services. Prior to becoming a full-time mom of her three sons, Rick Pioneer Connections
