a message from our Head of School...

Dear Friends of Providence High School,

T

It was most satisfying to hear the executive leaders of PH&S speak about their commitment to our Core Values and Mission even in times of great growth for the system. Our high school shares the Core Values with PH&S, which were established long ago and nurtured for many years by the Sisters of Providence.

Our Core Values– Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence, and Stewardship – are prominent here at the high school and at all PH&S facilities. We also share the same Mission Statement – “As People of Providence we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and the vulnerable, through our compassionate service.” We also focused on a Promise made by the Sisters of Providence – “Together, we answer the call of every person we serve: Know me, care for me, ease my way.” It was so easy to connect what we do here at the high school with the system-wide focus and initiatives.

We truly are creating People of Providence here at PHS. Please enjoy this issue of Pioneer Connections!

It’s motivating to see so many people who support Providence High School in so many generous ways. A culture of engagement and giving is natural for us. We teach our current Pioneers to give back through our powerful Christian Service Program. We also challenge our students to follow in Emilie Gamelin’s, the founder of the Sisters of Providence, footsteps. Mother Gamelin preached, “Humility, simplicity, charity, above all charity.” Thank you to all of our donors who are leading by example through their support of Providence High School!

Our Principal, Mrs. Allison Castro ‘02, and two of our Providence High School Board of Regents members, Board Chair Mr. Gary Arakelian ’88, and Mrs. Erica Menke, joined me at the annual Providence Health & Services (PH&S) Governance Conference in Bellevue, Washington from March 10th – 12th. As you probably know, Providence Health & Services is a large (soon to be 50 hospitals and other facilities, including the University of Great Falls, MT, in seven states with 110,000 employees) healthcare organization, of which Providence High School (PHS) is a valued ministry. In fact, Providence High School is the only high school in the entire United States which is governed by a healthcare organization! We are blessed to be an educational ministry of this wonderful organization. The conference gathers more than 400 executives and Board leaders from across the system. Providence High School is always highlighted proudly at this event.

PHS Raises Money to Establish End-of-Life Ministry

I

t is a long held tradition at Providence to commemorate the season of Lent by raising money to support a worthy charity or cause. This year, the Providence community chose to dedicate this year’s “People of Providence Lenten Charity Drive” to raising funds to aid in the establishment of a unique ministry which will serve the Burbank and Tarzana communities: No One Dies Alone (NODA). NODA is a palliative care/end of life ministry found in many Providence hospitals in the Pacific Northwest. The mission of this ministry is simple: to ensure that dying patients, who have no living or present family or friends, are not forced to spend their final days or hours alone. NODA volunteers spend time talking with patients, praying with them, and tending to their comfort needs.

Throughout the season of Lent, students collected spare change in their religion classes. Many students also chose to donate the money they saved from giving something up for Lent. The PHS Associated Student Body also generously donated the proceeds from ticket sales for this year’s Theme Day to support the cause.

PHS collected $3,250, which will be donated and used for the training of volunteers and the purchasing of supplies for a new NODA program at both Providence Saint Joseph and Providence Tarzana Medical Centers.

“Many people often seem surprised when I share that our school is involved in supporting an end-of-life ministry,” admits PHS Campus Minister Mr. Nicolas Estrada ‘07. “But we feel that this is an ideal opportunity for Providence to live out its mission of revealing God’s love for the poor and the vulnerable in a very real

Students Attend USC Symposium on Global Health By: Dr. Arjan Harjani, Medical Focus Program Director

Justine is a graduate of this program)- her boss did not hesitate to agree to the invitation so there we were, on a Saturday morning in early February, twenty of us, part of a large gathering of doctors, med students, and research scientists. This was clearly a group of stewards of healthcare with a heart and mind full of giving to the sick, the poor, and the vulnerable with compassion, justice, respect, and a strong sense of moral obligation.

“What I enjoyed most was the professional environment I was in.

High school students do not always get opportunities like this one, so I found it refreshing and memorable to be surrounded by many like-minded medical school students,” said Nate Vicente ‘16. “Being in those lecture halls and listening to each presentation gave me a glimpse into what my future will consist of.”

The students were split among the various workshops that were offered over the four block sessions ranging from an hour to an hour and one-half duration. Topics were diverse and based on the overarching theme of United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals with a 2030 agenda featuring 17 major actions.

Women and children are segments of the global population that have often been ignored which leads us to ponder over this frightful scenario- failure to take action to better the lives of women and children will result in a sick and shrinking population and a huge economic burden on all governments, cultures, and societies. However, all this is not just spelling doom. It’s also about hope and actions that are taking place around the world to make every individual’s life and health better. The UN has established seventeen health resolutions and sustainable goals aimed for 2030- they include ending poverty, providing education for everyone, ensuring clean water for all, and many more!

Positive and encouraging measures are being taken as a number of organizations are joining hands to eradicate poverty, illness, and illiteracy and bring confidence, power, and hope to all women and children around the world.

M

any people love to travel and explore other cities, countries, and continents to experience the rich cultural diversity, exotic foods, breathtaking views of nature, and architecture reflective of the generations that came before us. But have we looked at the world through the lens of global health? At times, we forget the poor and the vulnerable- people affected by poverty, destitution, illness, isolation, or lack of proper healthcare services, which all add up to a sense of hopelessness. How do we bring these realities into the classroom?

Quite simply- you draw the attention of a teenager to these issues as well as concerns close to home- like that of Porter Ranch in our very own San Fernando Valley- then expand the circle to Flint in Michigan, Bogota in Columbia, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in Africa, Syria in Middle east/Asia, China and many other cities and countries- the circle gets bigger until we have included the whole planet. I encourage them to hear about the issues, research them, talk about them, discuss them, and reflect on them. This year we added another dimension to this lens and that was an opportunity of attending a symposium to listen to all the experts about global health and present and future projects and plans.

That helped the students get a better grasp on these issues by understanding the social and economic factors and the political turmoil resulting in forced migration, starvation, illness, and a downward spiral of degradation of human dignity. Many of the effects of these events could have been mitigated by agreements, unification, solidarity, and a better understanding of the fact that “we’re all in this together” and living on this one planet that is our only home!

“The symposium exposed me to a multitude of different career opportunities within the medical field,” recalled Abigail Urbina ‘17. “All the passionate medical students and physicians I was able to meet provided me with a great amount of insight on what paved their journeys towards success. Not only was the symposium a fun event filled with many seminars and workshops, but it was also a great opportunity for us young adults to explore what work inspires us most.”

“The symposium taught me a lot about what’s really going on in the world. It made me realize that there are situations out there that can be fixed over time, and ultimately, our generation will be the one to do just that,” added Kaelin Ayap ‘17.

Providence was fortunate to have been the only high school invited to the 2016 USC’s Symposium on Global Health which featured women’s and children’s health. Justine Ko ‘10 is a current student at Keck School of Medicine of USC and on path to becoming a doctor. She is the Co-President of the OBGYN interest group that co-sponsored this year’s event along with students in pediatrics.

Family Pledge Program Donors Celebrated at Reception

O

n Sunday, January 31st, donors to Providence High School’s Family Pledge Program braved the cold, wind, and rain, to attend a reception in their honor. Nearly 90 parents, faculty, and staff members attended the "Winter Wonderland" themed reception in the Providence High School Multi-Purpose Room, which was beautifully adorned in winter white and accented with small white lights and glittering snowflakes hanging overhead. Wine that was generously provided by the Kurkjian family and freshly prepared scrumptious appetizers warmed up the attendees.

PHS is grateful to the many families that support and believe in the mission of the Sisters of Providence and trust in the abilities of our faculty and staff to help instill the core values of respect, compassion, stewardship, excellence, and justice in their children.

Head of School Joe Sciuto provided some statistics on the Family Pledge Program, which again exceeded $100,000, and shared the many programs and school opportunities that were made possible

by Family Pledge Program participants. More than 94% of our new families and 60% of all families currently participate in the growing program.

The Counter-Cultural Value of Catholic Education: Knowledge, Faith, and Service By: Kerry Martin, PHS Dean of Studies

I

n a recent issue of Pioneer Press, a newsletter sent to current PHS families, Mr. Joe Sciuto, our Head of School here at Providence, shared the discussions he and several other Presidents and Heads of Catholic Schools had regarding the value of a Catholic Education. Mr. Sciuto pointed out the tangible sense of community here at Providence as a major draw, in addition to our strong academic and co-curricular programs. January 31st – February 6th marked this year’s Catholic Schools’ Week and I too found myself reflecting on what makes a Catholic Education special, unique, and superior. The theme of Catholic Schools’ Week this year focused on three facets of Catholic education that are at the core of who we are: knowledge, faith, and service.

to share it. In his article, “College Admission 2.0: Service Over Self,” Weissbourd discussed the consensus among the consortium of college admissions deans and guidance counselors he hosted.

The consensus of these deans from the Ivy Leagues, published in their report, “Turning the Tide,” is that the absurdly competitive college admissions process has turned high school students into stressed-out, brag-sheet obsessed mercenaries fighting for the highest GPA possible, regardless of the cost to their own personal well-being.

Weissbourd summarized their conclusion in this way: “Yes, academic engagement matters…[but] so does meaningful ethical engagement.” The article and the report referenced go on to list the major recommendations that came from the meeting, including the importance of students “immers[ing] themselves in an experience that is meaningful to them over a sustained period of time and whether they learn about themselves; the perspectives of others…and their responsibilities toward their communities.”

As you might imagine, I cracked a rather smug grin at this point in the article, thinking of our Christian Service program and Senior

It struck me that the unique strength of the Catholic education we offer here at PHS resides in the fact that knowledge is not an end in and of itself. We are called by our faith to use our knowledge in service of others. As providence would have it, I came across an article by Richard Weissbourd, senior lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which confirmed the value of that combination and I felt immediately compelled Pioneer Connections

Project initiative. What this consortium of Ivy League admissions deans and other stakeholders had come to realize is that what our world needs most right now is educated young people who are motivated not just to achieve, but also to serve.

to the core of who we are and what we do here at Providence. It was heartening to read that key players in prestigious Ivy League colleges and universities are urging that schools and parents “join together to elevate and embody a healthier set of values” that will “powerfully hold up, expect, and honor in young people a more ethical and meaningful way of life.” As I read this clarion call I found myself thinking, ‘where have they been’? It seems the rest of the educational world is finally catching up to us Pioneers!

Among the other recommendations was an appeal to high schools to enable their students to choose “opportunities based on their individual interests and passions.” When I read that line, my buttons almost burst with pride. While we here at Providence are always looking to grow and improve and innovate, we are also already doing so many things right. We mean what we say on our banners that we want our students to Find Out What Inspires You! We are already ahead of the curve when it comes to challenging students to reflect on who they are and who they want to be, to seek authentic connections outside of themselves, and to serve the poor and vulnerable. Richard Weissman’s article affirms that the tide of education is, I am so relieved to say, shifting away from “listing high numbers of extracurricular activities [and] loading up on Advanced Placement courses” to “emphasizing that quality matters over quantity.” We here at Providence stress the importance of the fit of a college and university, not the brand name or reputation. Just as we want our students to feel that yes, “You Belong Here”, we want them to have that same feeling when they walk on the college and university campuses they move on to.

I’m sure many of you have seen similar articles popping up in your newsfeed and newsstands. One I highly recommend is “Why Elite-College Admissions Need an Overhaul” from The Atlantic.

What these articles portend is a transformation of the college admissions system that would align much more with what we already say and do here at Providence. I, for one, welcome the change and am proud that we have remained faithful to our mission and steadfast in our core values despite society’s obsession with AP scores and soaring GPAs. We strive for excellence, surely, but on our own terms and in step with our individual students’ needs and potential.

We have always stood firm in our philosophy that we work in partnership with parents in the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth of their children. We are more than a school; we are a community. We are in this together, bound by our commitment to knowledge, faith, and service.

Richard Weissbourd imparts sage advice to parents who are approaching the college admissions process as well. He writes that parents should approach the process as a chance “to understand their children more deeply, to uncover with them what makes them thrive, and to support them,” rather than “trying to shoehorn their kids into high-status colleges.” These words of wisdom speak 11

PHS Teacher Recognized as a Digital Innovator

HS faculty member, Annie Matthews ‘93, recently applied and was selected for the PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators program, which recognizes educators nationwide who are incorporating digital media in classrooms and serving as leaders in educational technology.

Aloha! Providence Singers Travel to Hawaii for Competition

Over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators will be part of a robust professional learning community that will foster new ways of thinking, while leading the way in using technology to drive student achievement.

rovidence Singers traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii from March 17th - 21st to compete in the National Heritage Music Festival.

The ensemble competed against large public schools from around the country and brought home a Gold Rating, 2nd Place in the Chamber Choir Division. A total of 42 student musicians enjoyed visiting the beautiful and historic sites of Oahu. In addition, two students were honored with individual achievement awards. Christy Hoffman ’17 received the “Maestro Award” for her outstanding vocal solo and Margaret Staedler ’16 received the prestigious “Ovation Award,” an award that is given to only one festival participant upon nomination from her instructor.

The Ovation Award recipient displays “a spirit of determination, inspiration and service to others.”

The PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators program is a yearlong, free professional development program designed to foster and reward a community of highly engaged, tech-savvy K-12 educators who are using digital media and technology in classrooms. Ms. Matthews was selected to join the program as a Local Digital Innovator. She will have exclusive access to all affiliated virtual events and trainings and the potential to partner with PBS inperson at specific education events in the community.

Girls’ Basketball Team Secures Championship Title

T

he Lady Pioneers were named the Liberty League Champions after another successful season with a record of 18-11, 7-1 in league. This is the seventh straight Liberty League championship for the program. The girls advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division V-AA playoffs, losing to Oxford Academy, 40-31.

Rachel Camonayan ‘16 was named the Liberty League Player of the Year. She led Providence in assists, averaging 2.9 a game. In addition, she averaged 7.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.7 steals.

Teammates Fabi Jimenez ‘16, who averaged 12 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game and Jasmine Ramirez ‘16, who averaged 10 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.1 steals were also named to the all-league team.

Students Complete Los Angeles Marathon

Guided by five dedicated adult leaders, Mr. Raul Borja, Mr. Ryan Cadiz, Mr. Greg Castro ‘02, Mr. Nick Norman, and Mrs. Laura Walsh, the students trained three times a week to build up the stamina and athleticism required to complete the marathon through the city of Los Angeles.

The five PHS students honored included Maria Benedicto ‘16, Cristina Corral ‘17, Tiffany Dang ‘17, Peter Levitan ‘17, and Kaitlin Luttenberger ‘18. Each artistic piece is based on the artist’s spirituality, expressed in unique and creative ways. Maria’s piece, Free, depicts “how spiritual energy flows around us constantly like the wind.” In Cristina’s piece, Homeostasis, she states that “through quiet reflection, I try to maintain spiritual homeostasis.” Peter depicted the face of Jesus in Crown of Thorns. In his artist statement he says, “the face represents the pain He went through by seeing His emotional expression. The crown of thorns represents the image of Jesus’ suffering. You can understand the pain someone is going through by his or her facial expression.” Tiffany’s charcoal drawing is called Transcendence and she states, “for me, this piece is reminiscent of Jesus’ resurrection in the way the fabric is lifted and elevated.” Kaitlin’s 3-dimensional art piece, Tree of Life, represents a tree with one leaf. She states, “this tree with its one leaf represents hope to me; the kind of hope that guides you through winter into spring and warms your soul.”

ecently, five students from Providence High School were among 72 students invited to participate in the fourth annual Robert Graham Memorial Student Art Exhibit. The exhibit is named in honor of noted sculptor Robert Graham, who designed the Great Bronze Doors at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

n February 14th, 18 Providence students and leaders attempted to run the LA Marathon and each and every one of them finished. Back in September, the students joined the PHS Students Run LA (SRLA) club and trained for five months to prepare for this tremendous feat.

SRLA is a goal-oriented program that helps students realize that they can accomplish anything. For many of the students, this may be the first time they have ever run a long distance. Throughout the five month journey, students begin by running one mile and slowly progress to accomplishing longer distances with the goal of completing the 26.2 mile course.

PHS Academic Decathlon Team Brings Home Medals

T

his year’s Academic Decathlon competition was held at Bishop Alemany High School. Providence put forth two teams with a single alternate player. The team captain was four year veteran Michael Napa ‘16, who was assisted by three year veteran, Emily Velandia ‘16. The team took home a total of eight medals including a bronze medal for third place in Division 2.

Congratulations to the following students: Isabella Hays ‘16 and Erika Marmershteyn ‘18, both earning silver medals in literature; Michael Napa ‘16 earning a gold medal for the essay component and a silver medal in economics; Grace Newman ‘17 for earning bronze medals in literature, social science, and art; and Emily Velandia ‘16 for earning a bronze medal in economics.

faculty profile: Andrew Bencze ‘89

M

r. Andrew Bencze moved to the Los Angeles area just before entering junior high where he attended St. Dominic’s in Eagle Rock. He then went on to attend Providence High School where he played basketball for four years, graduating in 1989. He earned his B.A. in History from California State University Northridge and M.A. in European Intellectual and Cultural History at the University of London. It was during his time at CSUN that he began working at Providence High School as a coach and became heavily involved in the Kairos Retreat program. He was hired as the first of many alumni to come back and teach at his alma mater by longtime principal Sr. Lucille Dean, SP. Mr. Bencze has taught many classes at Providence across a range of subjects, including Freshman English, Physical Education and World History. In 1999 his high school coach, mentor, and friend, Athletic Director Paul Sutton, passed away after a long battle with cancer and he assumed the role of Athletic Director, a position he still holds today.

Mr. Bencze is married to Joanna Bencze, who coaches the cheer team at Providence, and has two daughters, Samantha and Madison, who are as much at home at Providence as they are in their own home.

I have been very lucky to have had great players that have made me a better coach. The number is meaningful to me because it represents the efforts of so many individuals and teams who gave so much of themselves to their team and the school. That particular win was great because it was senior night and also clinched our seventh straight Liberty League Championship.

I’ve been coaching at PHS since 1990 when I started as the boys’ junior varsity basketball coach. I was also the assistant coach for the women’s program at Occidental College in Eagle Rock in the 90’s for a four year period. The head coach at that time was Jeff Campbell who is now the head coach for Cal State Northridge’s men’s volleyball team.

The girls’ varsity basketball team was named Liberty League Champions for the seventh year in a row. You have guided the girls to 13 total championships throughout your career. How have you managed to keep the momentum going?

coaching at your alma mater?

I think it has a lot to do with the athletes and their family’s willingness to give so much of themselves to the program. We end up spending a lot of time together throughout the year and the bond the group forms is a big part of why we are able to be so successful. If there is one thing I’ve learned as a coach it is to take on the task of being a lifelong learner, so every year each team is unique and although a lot of the core things that we do stay the same, we are always adding new experiences, new strategies and techniques and finding a way to challenge the athletes and keep it fresh. The most important thing I am doing is teaching the team to work together, while teaching each individual to become the best person they can be. The success is just a product of the family unit helping each other become better and better at whatever we are doing.

It means I am home. Providence was a great place for me to grow up. I was an important part of a community that cared about me, and now I get to create that same sense of family at Providence and with the teams that I coach.

What

did you learn from working with him?

Coach Sutton taught me about the work you need to put into anything that you do. Although hard work leads to success, it does not guarantee it. You can put in all the hard work and not reach your goals, but it does not take away the value of the work you put in if you fail. Putting in the work with no guarantee of success is the most valuable part of the process.

Why

As PHS Athletic Director, how do you see the department evolving? What sports would you like to see PHS offer in the future?

boys or another sport altogether?

I think a lot has changed in the many years since I first took over for Paul Sutton. The biggest change has been the expansion of sports programs to more and more year-round competition. While it has certainly raised the level of competition, it has also made it harder to continue our history of many multi-sport athletes. Next year, we’ll be fielding an equestrian team and tennis is on the horizon for us as well.

When I first started at Providence, I assisted with boys’ junior varsity basketball and boys’ varsity volleyball. At that time girls’ sports were not yet what they are today, and I saw that I could have a great impact with the program. When the job opened up in 1995, I jumped at the chance to advance the program. I started coaching three varsity sports: girls’ volleyball, girls’ basketball, and boys’ volleyball. When I was lucky enough to marry my wife Joanna, I decided that I was going to make my marriage a full time commitment and I dropped girls’ and boys’ volleyball. Girls’ basketball was the team I loved to coach the most.

My biggest success has been maintaining the integrity of our athletic programs. This is a time where many schools are willing to skirt the rules in order to create a successful program. We’ve always done things the right way and have been successful doing it. The biggest challenge is staying successful while maintaining our integrity. It is not easy but we feel like we are providing a model for the kids we are entrusted to teach.

daughters, what message do you hope to spread to young girls who want to play sports and achieve the same success as their male counterparts?

I can still remember the very first time I met with the girls’ varsity basketball team and I said to them, you are not girls’ basketball players to me, you are athletes, and I’ll be just as challenging and have the same expectations I would of any athlete I coached.

Years later one of the players on that team told me that’s what sold her on me as a coach.

Kristin Newton ‘66 - “I can’t believe that it will soon be 50 years since I graduated from Providence. A lot has happened in the meantime. I loved the art classes at Providence with Gabrielle LeFevre. She inspired me to become a professional artist. Recently I was invited to give a talk in Korea about drawing and perception.

I’ve lived in Japan for 35 years and, unfortunately, probably won’t make it back for the reunion, but it’s so nice to keep in touch.”

Toni Dirscherl Werk ‘68 - “We have been living in Las Vegas, NV for the past 39 years. Our youngest son, Charles Patrick, and his wife, Callie, had a handsome baby boy last August 27 in Pocatello, Idaho.

This 9 pound baby is our first and only grandchild, and my husband Steve and I are beyond blessed!”

Josee Marquis ’70 retired on December 31, 2015 after a long career in the travel industry, both with the airlines and then in corporate travel planning.

This year, I will also be teaching education courses when the convention takes place in September.

He sought me out on the convention floor to say how happy and excited he was with his new career, and thanked me profusely for helping him to graduate from college with all the training needed to be a licensed Optician. He also affirmed what I learned from Mrs. Greenhill, ‘optics uses a lot of algebra!’”

Susan Hartz Brodeur ‘72 - “Since moving to Utah in September of 2015, I’ve seen more deer and more snow than I’ve ever seen in my entire life; also, moose, porcupines, and other wild creatures along with beautiful mountains, exquisite flora and fauna, and TREES, so many trees!

The first week of January, I started a new position as the graphic designer for the Woodbury Art Museum, which is part of Utah Valley University, in Orem, Utah. I get to create art while being surrounded by art, which is a dream come true for me because of my lifelong love of the arts, which was nurtured and fueled by Miss Gabrielle LeFevre and her mother, Mrs. LeFevre throughout my years at PHS. They were a wonderful inspiration to me and many other young women who were lucky enough to know and love them. And now I have a job that I know would make them proud!”

Elizabeth Flores ’79 - “I want to thank everyone for their prayers during my second bout with breast cancer. Due to advanced surgeries, City of Hope is able to keep me well and send me back to my normal teaching and jogs in the park!

2000’s

Jackie Jaskowiak, Pharm.D., BCPS ‘00 authored a case report that was published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP) in February 2016. She was the sole author on this manuscript entitled: “Treatment of hemorrhagic acute disseminated encephalomyelitis with cyclophosphamide.” AJHP is considered to be the most widely recognized and respected clinical pharmacy journal in the world.

I am working on a children’s book and finished choreographing a piece reflecting breast cancer treatment (mastectomy, chemo, radiation). Nothing like the arts to lift your spirits.

My daughter is a director in NY working on a series. I am proud of her interest in volunteer work in Africa.

Melissa Crandall ‘88 - “I went to grad school and got an MA degree in Nonprofit Management (from Antioch University LA). I also earned a credential called Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP), and I am officially transitioning into the nonprofit sector from private business where I worked before (in entertainment and organic beauty).”

Therese Menez Offer ’92 - “I just wanted to give an update/travel note. I am currently traveling around the world with my husband Elad and my daughter Maya for over three months. We began in December and are including sub-Saharan Africa where I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the country of Namibia.”

Additionally my brother, Denny Dimalanta ‘11, and I went to Japan and Taiwan together in December.

Professionally, I was recently promoted to Senior Software Engineer at AppDynamics which I’ve been part of from the time it was a small San Francisco startup with just 100 employees. AppDynamics is now considered one of San Francisco’s fastest growing pre-ipo software companies with over 900 employees worldwide and a recent valuation close to $2 billion.”

2010’s

Eric Becerra ‘11 - “After high school, I worked two jobs during my two years as a full time student at Glendale Community College (GCC), trying to save enough money to transfer. I saved thousands of dollars and won multiple scholarships to attend UCLA.

However, my life is about to change again. I have recently been accepted to the University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill’s PhD program for History.

My focus at UNC will be early America, specifically the Spanish influence on the early republic. I’m also interested in Hobbesian influence on the American frontier and how it shaped the settlers’ political philosophy.”

Chanel Samson ‘12 - “I graduated from LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) in July with a 1st, which is the highest you can get in England, and now have my Bachelor of Arts in music honors. Plus, Paul McCartney gave me my diploma which is pretty cool. I’m moving to New York to pursue my band, Chanel & the Circus, and do a one woman show. For the past year I’ve also put on a worldwide cabaret event called The Secret Circus, with a sellout show every night and am taking it to Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.”

(Photo #3) Leo Puentes ‘13 - “I am currently in my third year at the University of Redlands. This spring semester, I am studying at La Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain. It has definitely been a life-changing experience. I’m in love with the Spanish culture, it is so dynamic.

It’s funny, everything that Señora Parodi has taught me came back to me once I came here. I’m definitely enjoying it here in Madrid. I’ve had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. I’ve been to the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Portugal.

I have plans to travel to Germany and France [soon]. However, whenever I travel, I always feel that sense of relief when I step back in Madrid. Madrid will always be a second home to me from now on.”

While at UCLA, I joined a program called M.E.N.T.E. (Mentors Empowering & Nurturing Though Education) and eventually became its Financial Director. I majored in history and graduated last year with Latin and Departmental honors (and without debt!). My honors thesis even won UCLA’s Carey McWilliams Award. Upon graduation, I received a position in UCLA’s education outreach program as a college and career advisor for a school in East LA.

Funds provide financial assistance to current seniors in order to attend the KAIROS retreat.

Sister Alexis Melancon, S.P. Scholarship Fund Established by the Class of ’69 to provide tuition assistance to students who excel in a co-curricular activity and demonstrate the Core Values of PHS.

When you give to PHS, you help support the mission of the Sisters of Providence. Every donation counts, and is truly appreciated by the wonderful students who are benefiting from a collegepreparatory education. There are numerous opportunities to give back to the Providence High School community, and below are descriptions of the various funds/programs that have been established.

Sister Renate Hayum, S.P. Scholarship Fund Established by the Sisters of Providence to provide tuition assistance to a sophomore or junior student who demonstrates the Core Values of PHS and has an interest in pursuing a profession in Information Technology and/or Library Science.

The Family Pledge Program The Family Pledge Program supports every student, teacher, and program on campus. As a result of the Family Pledge Program, more than $100,000 has been raised during the 2015-2016 school year which helped fund various new classes and programs at PHS including Senior Projects, Robotics, Solar Boat, Alumni Career Day, Naviance College Counseling Program, Mandarin and Latin language programs, Instrumental Music, Zoology, Academic Decathlon, and the Golf Team.

The Gift of Giving Back

M

y experience as a student at Providence High School was a gift. Like most good gifts it came as a surprise. I had no idea, that late summer day I walked onto campus for freshman orientation, how much the four brief years I spent at PHS would impact my life. Recently, I decided to include Providence High School in my Will. Here is why…

I invite you to join me in including a gift to Providence High School through your Will or Trust. There are several ways to do this: 1. Name PHS in your Will.

2. Name PHS as a partial (or full) beneficiary of your IRA (401k, 403b, etc.).

High school is intended to prepare you for life. PHS is one of the finest institutions at preparing students to go out with good courage to impact lives and to be change makers. I know PHS prepared me for life in many ways, some of which I am still discovering.

3. Name PHS as a partial (or full) beneficiary of your life insurance.

4. Set up a Charitable Gift Annuity (or Remainder Trust) through PHS (Michelle Jackson can help you with this).

One very important lesson I learned was generosity. Just before my senior year, I learned that a fellow student wasn’t going to be able to return for his senior year for financial reasons. Without hesitation another fellow senior organized a fundraising garage sale to make sure her friend, our fellow classmate, could return to graduate from Providence. That alumnus of Providence accepted that gift and went on to work at the White House, helping bring health care to several million Americans who had none. One can say that the generosity of one student helped spread generosity to millions.

5. There are several other ways to support PHS in your Will and a Financial Professional should be able to help you with this.

Last spring I had the opportunity to re-connect with several of my PHS teachers in Seattle, as well as Michelle Jackson, Development Officer at Providence. Reflecting upon the many ways Providence has been a gift to me, I decided to give back to Providence by including it in my Will.

rovidence’s motto, “You Belong Here” is not an empty expression or slogan! After a year and a half at PHS with our sophomore daughter, Milena, that expression goes further than we’ve ever experienced for her well-being. Our daughter is fitting in with the philosophy of Providence, it’s everything a parent loves seeing at these trying times for young teenagers.

We come from the public school system and LAUSD, and there was resistance to coming here, but “Mom knew best,” and we see the results from the love, the safety, the small class sizes, the uniforms, the administration and teachers who all know her and support her, the opportunities that a small school provides, the in-depth counseling with no time limits, the ethics, morality, the spiritualism that a holy place provides all goes into the Pioneer lifestyle and experience.

The academics and athletics are both strong to produce a well-rounded, holistic person/student of the world where tolerance can grow.

Our daughter knows everyone, and everyday she feels more and more comfortable. She’s already said being a junior and senior will be so affirmative!

Guidance from the college counselors will positively take her into the affirming future. Compare college counselors in public high schools and one scarcely gets enough time and personal attention to make informed decisions - we know from our son. Not so at Providence! The care given and advanced planning ensures a good fit for college. Suffice it to say, our daughter will be able to do whatever she wants, to dream the biggest dreams because of the enrichments she’s getting at Providence.
