Beyond 911: A Campaign to Expand Emergency Care
The emergency department at Providence Seaside Hospital gave Seaside resident Bob Olson lifesaving care.
Care you can count on Lying in his hotel room, Pete felt no chest pain, and his arm didn’t tingle. But his pulse was so weak his friend couldn’t find it. “Far as I can tell, you’re dead,” his friend said. A call to 911 brought an ambulance, which rushed Pete to the emergency department at Providence Seaside Hospital. Pete wasn’t dead, but he’d suffered a massive heart attack – a near total blockage of one of his heart’s main arteries. Pete would eventually receive a stent to keep his artery open, but the Providence Seaside emergency department saved his life. “They gave me a clot-busting drug to re-open that artery,” he says. “Without that, I never would have made it.” Pete’s wife and teenage sons were at home in Montana. Without the emergency care he received at Providence Seaside Hospital, they might never have seen him again.
A call to 911 brought Pete to the Providence Seaside Hospital emergency department, where physicians gave him medication to dissolve a killer blood clot in a coronary artery. Pete’s wife and sons were nine hours away in Montana.
Emergency facilities for years to come Like Pete, thousands of people each year depend on the emergency department at Providence Seaside Hospital. After calling 911, they trust its outstanding personnel for lifesaving care. The current emergency facilities were constructed nearly 50 years ago and last updated in the early 1990s. They are small, outdated and poorly configured to provide patients and families with security and privacy. With your support, Beyond 911 will raise $1.5 million toward a $5.7 million plan to create facilities that support emergency care our patients can count on for years to come.
Faster, more secure and more private A new emergency department will meet our area’s rapidly growing and changing needs. Twice as large as the current facility, the new emergency department will reduce stressful waiting time and ensure each patient gets care quickly.
Lisa Huddleston, M.D., leads the emergency department at Providence Seaside Hospital. “When someone comes into the emergency department, they’re honoring us with their trust,” she says. “We want to continue to earn that trust by creating a state-ofthe-art facility that is a model of calm care and healing.”
The number of treatment areas will grow from seven to 10. Larger and up-to-date, these areas will give physicians and families more room and improve the use of technology. Two large bays will accommodate care for patients with severe trauma. Two other areas will provide space for patients needing an extra-secure and quiet environment. In-room monitors will allow staff to oversee each patient and quickly identify life-threatening problems.
The current cramped facility means patients often must go without the comfort of having family and friends close by. Lack of private areas means they may not share information critical to their care. In the new facility, private treatment rooms will accommodate several visitors, protect confidentiality and encourage patients to communicate openly with doctors and nurses.

Bob Olson was at home when chemotherapy and a heart condition caused him to collapse. His wife, Cara, called 911 to take him to Providence Seaside Hospital. Once there, Bob suffered cardiac arrest. “I guess I coded,” he says. “But, they got me stable so I could get to specialized care.” Bob’s daughter, Julie Jesse, was in a charity bike ride when she got the news: “The minute I knew he was at Seaside, I was confident they would make the right decisions.”

When Aubree was 5 months old her mother rushed her to the emergency department. Aubree could hardly breathe. Lisa Huddleston, M.D., knew right away that she had serious pneumonia and needed special care available at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. “I am so thankful for Providence Seaside Hospital. It’s important to have a place close to home,” says Aubree’s mother Maria.
