Two hundred lifesaving AEDs provided free to schools and community organizations.

One hundred and seventy families given resources and support to develop hearthealthy lifestyle, eating and exercise habits.

That’s the impact 460 people will have thanks to their generosity at Providence Heart Institute’s Black & White Ball. Held under clear tents on the field at Providence Park during an evening that set records for rain, the inaugural event raised more than $726,000 for heart disease prevention and cardiac wellness programs.

The first-ever on-field event was made possible through a partnership with the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC. Barbara Palmer and Warren Rosenfeld expertly captained the event committee.

“We are just so excited about our guests’ amazing generosity,” said James Beckerman, M.D., medical director of prevention and wellness. “They will help thousands of people be more heart healthy, active and safe.”

Mrs. Patricia Peterson gave Providence Heart institute $1 million to advance treatments of heart valve diseases.

In recognition, the institute has named its heart valve center after Mrs. Peterson and her husband of 64 years, Ron.

LONGTIME DONOR SUPPORTS INNOVATION IN HEART VALVE TREATMENTS Patricia Peterson recently gave Providence Heart Institute $1 million to improve the way diseases affecting heart valves are treated.

One such disease affects the mitral valve in nearly 10 percent of Americans age 75 or older. In recognition, Providence Heart named its valve center after Mrs. Peterson and her late husband Ron, a founding member of Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation.

Since 2012, the newly named Ronald and Patricia Peterson Heart Valve Center has

emerged as one of the top five sites in the nation for replacing failing aortic valves without open heart surgery. Providence Heart cardiologists have performed more than 1,300 of the replacements, using catheters instead of surgery. Mrs. Peterson’s gift will support work that builds on this progress, beginning with research into how the heart’s mitral valve might be repaired or replaced using the same transcatheter techniques.

Mitral regurgitation, or leaking of the mitral valve, affects millions of Americans, causing the heart to work harder than it should to pump blood to the body. Serious leaking is a medical emergency, and longstanding leaking can lead to heart failure.

According to Peterson Heart Valve Center co-medical director, Ethan Korngold, M.D., “We’re committed to developing new

treatments for mitral disease, especially for patients unable to undergo the rigors of open heart surgery. Mrs. Peterson’s gift will inspire our efforts.”

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson were married more than six decades before his death in 2016.

“We had 64 great years,” said Patricia. “Ron had a valve replaced, so it’s good to help care for people like him.”

In July, Dennese Kelsay became the Peterson Heart Valve Center’s first participant in a clinical trial testing transcatheter replacement of mitral valves in patients who had previously had the valve replaced surgically.

A retired paramedic and emergency medical services instructor, Dennese is thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the trial. “The timing of this was just a miracle, the fact that they had this study starting and I was a fit for it. Everything has been very smooth.” She also appreciates the quick recovery. “I went home 27 hours after the procedure,” she said. “I’m feeling very good. I’ve been taking walks and working out at home on my elliptical.” Angela Redd is the clinical research coordinator for Dennese’s trial. “It’s really rewarding when you see your patients avoid a huge convalescence and get back to their lives quickly,” she said.

CARDIOLOGISTS TAP MOBILE TECHNOLOGY TO ADVANCE CARE Chris Kiepke has battled heart disease his entire life. The 43-year-old father of two has had four open heart surgeries and multiple hospitalizations for heart failure. “By the time I feel my symptoms, I need to go to the hospital,” he said. “It’s too late to turn it around at home.”

But thanks to Providence Heart Institute’s Center for Advanced Heart Disease, which benefits from significant donor support, Chris received a mobile early warning system. The center implanted a tiny device in one of his arteries. The device records data on his heart rate and pulmonary blood pressure, transmitting it wirelessly each day

to his Providence Heart caregivers and cardiologist, Jacob Abraham, M.D. If Dr. Abraham sees a problem developing, he calls Chris to adjust his treatment.

Dr. Abraham is medical director of the Center for Advanced Heart Disease, which cares for nearly 100 patients using the mobile devices. “We can do a lot to improve the lives of people with heart failure and heart transplants by adjusting their medications, diet, and exercise. But, as with Chris, the key is ongoing monitoring and early detection,” he said. “This technology gives us the timely information we need to help people stay healthy and out of the hospital.”

Nurse Katherine Callis monitors Chris’ heart daily and calls him if he needs to adjust his self-care. Her careful oversight allows Chris to live more fully. “It’s so great to know that Katherine is looking out for me,” he said.

Providence Heart is exploring other mobile technology to make care more responsive and accessible. Cardiologist Xiaoyan Huang, M.D., is leading a grant-funded pilot study to determine whether Twistle, a mobile app that sends daily advice and self-care reminders, can improve outcomes for other high-risk heart failure patients. “The goal is to help patients do better self-care, feel better and avoid hospitalization,” she said.

In another grant-funded pilot, Providence Heart is testing whether an app called TickerFit can encourage participation in cardiac rehabilitation, boost at-home exercise, and make rehab accessible to patients whose schedule or location doesn’t allow them to visit a cardiac rehab center regularly. “We know cardiac rehab works,” said Charlotte Douglas, manager of Providence Heart Institute’s cardiac rehab programs. “The question now is ‘How can we make it work for more people?’”

Chris has avoided hospitalization since he received his monitor. He is grateful for the care he has received from the Center for Advanced Heart Failure and is speaking out about the options emerging for people with heart issues, options frequently made possible by generous donors. “People should know that, even if you have pretty bad heart failure, there are choices coming that can really improve your living.”

Mobile heart care technology is helping lifelong heart patient Chris Kiepke to avoid hospitalization and allowing him to take his son fishing. “I feel better than I have in 15 years,” he said.
